upaviṣṭaṃ tataḥ skandaṃ hiraṇyakavacasrajam। hiraṇyacūḍamukuṭaṃ hiraṇyākṣaṃ mahāprabham ॥03-218-1॥
[उपविष्टं (upaviṣṭam) - sitting; seated; ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; स्कन्दं (skandam) - Skanda; (proper noun, the deity Karttikeya); हिरण्यकवचस्रजम् (hiraṇya-kavaca-srajam) - wearing golden armor and garland; हिरण्यचूडमुकुटं (hiraṇya-cūḍa-mukuṭam) - having golden crowned diadem; हिरण्याक्षं (hiraṇyākṣam) - with golden eyes; महाप्रभम् (mahāprabham) - greatly effulgent;]
(Seated then Skanda, adorned with golden armor and garland, having a golden crowned diadem, with golden eyes, greatly radiant.)
Then Skanda was seen seated, adorned with golden armor and garland, crowned with a golden diadem, possessing golden eyes, and having great brilliance. (03-218-1)
लोहिताम्बरसंवीतं तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रं मनोरमम्। सर्वलक्षणसम्पन्नं त्रैलोक्यस्यापि सुप्रियम् ॥०३-२१८-२॥
lohitāmbara-saṁvītaṁ tīkṣṇa-daṁṣṭraṁ manoramam। sarva-lakṣaṇa-sampannaṁ trailokyasya api supriyam॥03-218-2॥
[लोहिताम्बरसंवीतं (lohitāmbara-saṁvītam) - clothed in red garments; तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रं (tīkṣṇa-daṁṣṭram) - having sharp fangs; मनोरमम् (manoramam) - beautiful; सर्वलक्षणसम्पन्नं (sarva-lakṣaṇa-sampannam) - endowed with all marks (of excellence); त्रैलोक्यस्यापि (trailokyasya api) - even to the three worlds; सुप्रियम् (su-priyam) - very dear;]
(Clothed in red garments, having sharp fangs, beautiful, endowed with all marks (of excellence), even to the three worlds very dear.)
Clothed in red garments, possessing sharp fangs and beauty, endowed with every mark of excellence, he is dearly beloved even to the three worlds. (03-218-2)
ततस्तं वरदं शूरं युवानं मृष्टकुण्डलम्। अभजत्पद्मरूपा श्रीः स्वयमेव शरीरिणी ॥०३-२१८-३॥
tatastaṃ varadaṃ śūraṃ yuvānaṃ mṛṣṭakuṇḍalam | abhajat padmarūpā śrīḥ svayam eva śarīriṇī ॥03-218-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम् (tam) - him; वरदम् (varadam) - bestower of boons; शूरम् (śūram) - heroic; युवानम् (yuvānam) - young man; मृष्टकुण्डलम् (mṛṣṭakuṇḍalam) - with polished earrings; अभजत् (abhajat) - embraced; पद्मरूपा (padmarūpā) - in the form of a lotus; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - Śrī (goddess of fortune); स्वयम् (svayam) - herself; एव (eva) - indeed; शरीरिणी (śarīriṇī) - embodied;]
(Then him, the bestower of boons, heroic, young, with polished earrings, Śrī in lotus form herself indeed embodied embraced.)
Then, Śrī herself, embodied and in the form of a lotus, embraced that heroic young bestower of boons with polished earrings. (03-218-3)
श्रिया जुष्टः पृथुयशाः स कुमारवरस्तदा। निषण्णो दृश्यते भूतैः पौर्णमास्यां यथा शशी ॥०३-२१८-४॥
śriyā juṣṭaḥ pṛthuyashāḥ sa kumāravaras tadā। niṣaṇṇo dṛśyate bhūtaiḥ paurṇamāsyāṃ yathā śaśī ॥03-218-4॥
[श्रिया (śriyā) - with splendour; जुष्टः (juṣṭaḥ) - endowed; पृथुयशाः (pṛthuyashāḥ) - of great fame; स (sa) - he; कुमारवरः (kumāravaraḥ) - excellent prince; तदा (tadā) - then; निषण्णः (niṣaṇṇaḥ) - seated; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; भूतैः (bhūtaiḥ) - by beings; पौर्णमास्यां (paurṇamāsyām) - on the full-moon night; यथा (yathā) - as; शशी (śaśī) - the moon;]
(With splendour endowed, of great fame, he, the excellent prince, then, seated, is seen by beings, on the full-moon night, as the moon.)
At that time, the excellent prince, endowed with splendour and great fame, seated there, was seen by all beings like the moon on a full-moon night. (03-218-4)
अपूजयन्महात्मानो ब्राह्मणास्तं महाबलम्। इदमाहुस्तदा चैव स्कन्दं तत्र महर्षयः ॥०३-२१८-५॥
apūjayanmahātmāno brāhmaṇāstaṃ mahābalam। idamāhustadā caiva skandaṃ tatra maharṣayaḥ ॥03-218-5॥
[अपूजयन् (apūjayan) - did not honor; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; तं (taṃ) - him; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - the greatly powerful one; इदम् (idam) - this; आहुः (āhuḥ) - said; तदा (tadā) - then; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; स्कन्दम् (skandam) - Skanda; तत्र (tatra) - there; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages;]
(Did not honor the great-souled brāhmaṇas that greatly powerful one. This the great sages then and indeed said about Skanda there.)
The great-souled brāhmaṇas did not honor that greatly powerful one. Then, the great sages there spoke this about Skanda. (03-218-5)
हिरण्यवर्ण भद्रं ते लोकानां शङ्करो भव। त्वया षड्रात्रजातेन सर्वे लोका वशीकृताः ॥०३-२१८-६॥
hiraṇyavarṇa bhadraṃ te lokānāṃ śaṅkaro bhava। tvayā ṣaḍrātrajātena sarve lokā vaśīkṛtāḥ ॥03-218-6॥
[हिरण्यवर्ण (hiraṇyavarṇa) - golden-colored; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspiciousness; ते (te) - to you; लोकानां (lokānāṃ) - of the worlds; शङ्करो (śaṅkaro) - auspicious one; भव (bhava) - be; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; षड्रात्रजातेन (ṣaḍrātrajātena) - born after six nights; सर्वे (sarve) - all; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; वशीकृताः (vaśīkṛtāḥ) - subdued;]
(O golden-colored, may auspiciousness be to you, of the worlds, become the auspicious one. By you, born after six nights, all worlds have been subdued.)
O golden-hued one, may auspiciousness be yours; be the auspicious one of the worlds. By you, born after six nights, all the worlds have been subdued. (03-218-6)
अभयं च पुनर्दत्तं त्वयैवैषां सुरोत्तम। तस्मादिन्द्रो भवानस्तु त्रैलोक्यस्याभयङ्करः ॥०३-२१८-७॥
abhayaṃ ca punardattaṃ tvayaiva eṣāṃ surottama। tasmād indro bhavān astu trailokyasya abhayaṅkaraḥ ॥03-218-7॥
[अभयं (abhayam) (abhayam) - fearlessness; च (ca) (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) (punaḥ) - again; दत्तं (dattaṃ) (dattaṃ) - given; त्वयैव (tvayaiva) (tvayaiva) - by you alone; एषां (eṣāṃ) (eṣāṃ) - to these; सुरोत्तम (surottama) (surottama) - best of the gods; तस्मात् (tasmāt) (tasmāt) - therefore; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) (indraḥ) - Indra; भवान् (bhavān) (bhavān) - you; अस्तु (astu) (astu) - may it be; त्रैलोक्यस्य (trailokyasya) (trailokyasya) - of the three worlds; अभयङ्करः (abhayaṅkaraḥ) (abhayaṅkaraḥ) - giver of fearlessness;]
(Fearlessness and again has been given by you alone to these, best of the gods; therefore, may you, Indra, be the giver of fearlessness to the three worlds.)
Fearlessness has again been granted to these by you alone, O best of the gods; therefore, may you, Indra, be the giver of fearlessness to the three worlds. (03-218-7)

kim indraḥ sarvalokānāṃ karotīha tapodhanāḥ| kathaṃ devagaṇāṃś caiva pāti nityaṃ sureśvaraḥ ॥03-218-8॥
[किम् (kim) - what; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; सर्वलोकानाम् (sarvalokānām) - of all worlds; करोति (karoti) - does; इह (iha) - here; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - O wealth-of-austerity (addressing ascetics); कथम् (katham) - how; देवगणान् (devagaṇān) - divine hosts; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पाति (pāti) - protects; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; सुरेश्वरः (sureśvaraḥ) - lord of the gods (Surendra);]
(What does Indra of all worlds do here, O ascetics? How indeed does the lord of the gods always protect the divine hosts?)
O ascetics, what does Indra do for all the worlds here? And how does the lord of the gods always protect the hosts of the gods? (03-218-8)
ऋषय ऊचुः॥

इन्द्रो दिशति भूतानां बलं तेजः प्रजाः सुखम्। तुष्टः प्रयच्छति तथा सर्वान्दायान्सुरेश्वरः ॥०३-२१८-९॥
indro diśati bhūtānāṁ balaṁ tejaḥ prajāḥ sukham। tuṣṭaḥ prayacchati tathā sarvān dāyān sureśvaraḥ॥03-218-9॥
[इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; (the god Indra); दिशति (diśati) - bestows; grants; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; of creatures; बलम् (balam) - strength; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; energy; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - offspring; subjects; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - being pleased; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - offers; gives; तथा (tathā) - thus; in this way; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; दायान् (dāyān) - gifts; shares; सुरेश्वरः (sureśvaraḥ) - the lord of the gods;]
(Indra bestows to beings strength, splendor, offspring, happiness. Being pleased, the lord of the gods thus offers all gifts.)
Indra bestows strength, splendor, offspring, and happiness upon beings; when pleased, the lord of the gods grants all gifts in this way. (03-218-9)
दुर्वृत्तानां संहरति वृत्तस्थानां प्रयच्छति। अनुशास्ति च भूतानि कार्येषु बलसूदनः ॥०३-२१८-१०॥
durvṛttānāṃ saṃharati vṛttasthānāṃ prayacchati| anuśāsti ca bhūtāni kāryeṣu balasūdanaḥ ॥03-218-10॥
[दुर्वृत्तानां (durvṛttānāṃ) - of the wicked; of evil-doers; संहरति (saṃharati) - removes; takes away; वृत्तस्थानां (vṛttasthānāṃ) - of the righteous; of those who are established in right conduct; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - grants; bestows; अनुशास्ति (anuśāsti) - instructs; disciplines; च (ca) - and; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - creatures; beings; कार्येषु (kāryeṣu) - in actions; in duties; बलसूदनः (balasūdanaḥ) - Bala-sūdana; slayer of Bala (epithet of Kṛṣṇa or a hero);]
(Of the wicked he removes, of the righteous he grants, instructs and beings in actions Bala-sūdana.)
Bala-sūdana removes the wicked, bestows upon the righteous, and instructs all beings in their duties. (03-218-10)
असूर्ये च भवेत्सूर्यस्तथाचन्द्रे च चन्द्रमाः। भवत्यग्निश्च वायुश्च पृथिव्यापश्च कारणैः ॥०३-२१८-११॥
asūrye ca bhavet sūryas tathā candre ca candramāḥ। bhavati agniḥ ca vāyuḥ ca pṛthivī āpaḥ ca kāraṇaiḥ॥03-218-11॥
[असूर्ये (asūrye) - in the absence of the sun; च (ca) - and; भवेत् (bhavet) - let there be; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - sun; तथा (tathā) - so also; चन्द्रे (candre) - in the absence of the moon; च (ca) - and; चन्द्रमाः (candramāḥ) - moon; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; च (ca) - and; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; च (ca) - and; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; च (ca) - and; कारणैः (kāraṇaiḥ) - by the causes;]
(In the absence of the sun, and let there be sun; so also, in the absence of the moon, and the moon; fire becomes and wind and earth, waters and by the causes.)
When there is no sun, the sun may appear; similarly, in the absence of the moon, the moon arises. Fire, wind, earth, and waters manifest due to their respective causes. (03-218-11)
एतदिन्द्रेण कर्तव्यमिन्द्रे हि विपुलं बलम्। त्वं च वीर बलश्रेष्ठस्तस्मादिन्द्रो भवस्व नः ॥०३-२१८-१२॥
etad indreṇa kartavyam indre hi vipulaṃ balam. tvaṃ ca vīra balaśreṣṭhas tasmād indro bhavasva naḥ ॥03-218-12॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; इन्द्रेण (indreṇa) - by Indra; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - must be done; इन्द्रे (indre) - by Indra; हि (hi) - indeed; विपुलम् (vipulam) - abundant; बलम् (balam) - strength; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; वीर (vīra) - hero; बलश्रेष्ठः (balaśreṣṭhaḥ) - most excellent in strength; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; भवस्व (bhavasva) - be; नः (naḥ) - for us;]
(This must be done by Indra; indeed, Indra is of abundant strength. You also, hero, most excellent in strength; therefore, be Indra for us. (03-218-12))
This task must be done by Indra, for Indra indeed possesses great strength. You too, O hero, are the greatest in strength; therefore, become Indra for us. (03-218-12)
शक्र उवाच॥

भवस्वेन्द्रो महाबाहो सर्वेषां नः सुखावहः। अभिषिच्यस्व चैवाद्य प्राप्तरूपोऽसि सत्तम ॥०३-२१८-१३॥
bhavasvendro mahābāho sarveṣāṃ naḥ sukhāvahaḥ। abhiṣicyasva caivādya prāptarūpo'si sattama ॥03-218-13॥
[भव (bhava) - be; become; स्वेन्द्रः (sva-indraḥ) - our Indra; master; महाबाहो (mahā-bāho) - O mighty-armed; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; नः (naḥ) - of us; सुखावहः (sukha-avahaḥ) - bringer of happiness; अभिषिच्यस्व (abhiṣicyasva) - be anointed; consecrate yourself; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; आद्य (ādya) - today; प्राप्तरूपः (prāpta-rūpaḥ) - one who has attained the form; असि (asi) - you are; सत्तम (sattama) - O best one;]
(Be our Indra, O mighty-armed, of all of us the bringer of happiness. Consecrate yourself indeed today, you who have attained the form, O best one. (03-218-13))
O mighty-armed one, become our Indra, the bringer of happiness to us all. Today, consecrate yourself, for you have attained the position, O best one. (03-218-13)

शाधि त्वमेव त्रैलोक्यमव्यग्रो विजये रतः। अहं ते किङ्करः शक्र न ममेन्द्रत्वमीप्सितम् ॥०३-२१८-१४॥
śādhi tvam eva trailokyam avyagraḥ vijaye rataḥ। ahaṃ te kiṅkaraḥ śakra na mama indratvam īpsitam ॥03-218-14॥
[शाधि (śādhi) - govern; rule; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; only; त्रैलोक्यम् (trailokyam) - the three worlds; अव्यग्ऱः (avyagraḥ) - undisturbed; unperturbed; विजये (vijaye) - in victory; in conquest; रतः (rataḥ) - delighted; engaged; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; ते (te) - your; to you; किङ्करः (kiṅkaraḥ) - servant; शक्र (śakra) - O Indra; न (na) - not; मम (mama) - to me; for me; इन्द्रत्वम् (indratvam) - Indra-hood; status of Indra; ईप्सितम् (īpsitam) - desired;]
(Govern you indeed the three worlds, undisturbed, engaged in victory. I your servant, O Indra, not to me Indra-hood desired.)
You alone should rule the three worlds, undisturbed and intent on victory. I am your servant, O Indra; the status of Indra is not desired by me. (03-218-14)
शक्र उवाच॥

बलं तवाद्भुतं वीर त्वं देवानामरीञ्जहि। अवज्ञास्यन्ति मां लोका वीर्येण तव विस्मिताः ॥०३-२१८-१५॥
balaṃ tavādbhutaṃ vīra tvaṃ devānāmarīñjahi। avajñāsyanti māṃ lokā vīryeṇa tava vismitāḥ॥03-218-15॥
[बलं (balaṃ) - strength; power; तव (tava) - your; अद्भुतं (adbhutaṃ) - wonderful; marvelous; वीर (vīra) - hero; brave one; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; अरिन् (arin) - enemy; जहि (jahi) - destroy; conquer; अवज्ञास्यन्ति (avajñāsyanti) - will disregard; माम् (mām) - me; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; people; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by (your) prowess; त्व (tava) - your; विस्मिताः (vismitāḥ) - astonished; amazed;]
(Strength your wonderful, hero, you of the gods’ enemy destroy. Will disregard me worlds by your prowess amazed.)
Your strength is wonderful, hero; you, destroyer of the gods’ enemies, conquer them. The worlds, astonished by your prowess, will disregard me. (03-218-15)
इन्द्रत्वेऽपि स्थितं वीर बलहीनं पराजितम्। आवयोश्च मिथो भेदे प्रयतिष्यन्त्यतन्द्रिताः ॥०३-२१८-१६॥
indratve'pi sthitaṃ vīra balahīnaṃ parājitam। āvayoś ca mitho bhede prayatiṣyanty atandritāḥ॥03-218-16॥
[इन्द्रत्वेऽपि (indratve'pi) - even in the state of Indra; also; स्थितं (sthitaṃ) - situated; established; वीर (vīra) - hero; warrior; बलहीनं (balahīnaṃ) - devoid of strength; powerless; पराजितम् (parājitam) - defeated; overcome; आवयोः (āvayoḥ) - of us two; च (ca) - and; मिथः (mithaḥ) - mutually; of each other; भेदे (bhede) - in division; in causing separation; प्रयतिष्यन्ति (prayatiṣyanti) - will strive; will endeavor; अतन्द्रिताः (atandritāḥ) - untiring; indefatigable;]
(Even a hero established in the state of Indra, powerless, defeated. Of us two and, in mutual division, untiring (ones) will strive.)
Even a hero, though possessing the status of Indra, if deprived of strength and defeated, will be overcome. In causing division between the two of us, the tireless (ones) will strive. (03-218-16)
भेदिते च त्वयि विभो लोको द्वैधमुपेष्यति। द्विधाभूतेषु लोकेषु निश्चितेष्वावयोस्तथा ॥०३-२१८-१७॥
bhedite ca tvayi vibho loko dvaidham upeṣyati। dvidhābhūteṣu lokeṣu niściteṣv āvayos tathā ॥03-218-17॥
[भेदिते (bhedite) - when (you) are divided; (having been) split; च (ca) - and; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; विभो (vibho) - O lord; O all-pervading one; लोकः (lokaḥ) - the world; द्वैधम् (dvaidham) - duality; twofold state; उपेष्यति (upeṣyati) - will enter; will reach; द्विधा-भूतेषु (dvidhā-bhūteṣu) - having become two; being in a divided state; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; निश्चितेषु (niściteṣu) - being decided; determined; आवयोः (āvayoḥ) - between us two; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way;]
(And when you are divided, O lord, the world will enter into duality. In the worlds which have become divided, being determined thus between both of us.)
And when you are divided, O Lord, the world will become dual. Thus, in those worlds that have split, this division will be set between us. (03-218-17)
विग्रहः सम्प्रवर्तेत भूतभेदान्महाबल ॥०३-२१८-१७॥
vigrahaḥ sampravarteta bhūtabhedān mahābala ॥03-218-17॥
[विग्रहः (vigrahaḥ) - conflict; सम्प्रवर्तेत (sampravarteta) - may arise; भूतभेदान् (bhūtabhedān) - among beings (differences); महाबल (mahābala) - O mighty one;]
(Conflict may arise among beings, O mighty one.)
O mighty one, conflict may arise due to differences among beings. (03-218-17)
तत्र त्वं मां रणे तात यथाश्रद्धं विजेष्यसि। तस्मादिन्द्रो भवानद्य भविता मा विचारय ॥०३-२१८-१८॥
tatra tvaṃ māṃ raṇe tāta yathāśraddhaṃ vijeṣyasi। tasmād indro bhavān adya bhavitā mā vicāraya॥03-218-18॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मां (māṃ) - me; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; तात (tāta) - dear one; यथा (yathā) - according to; श्रद्धं (śraddham) - faith; विजेष्यसि (vijeṣyasi) - you shall conquer; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); अद्य (adya) - today; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; मा (mā) - do not; विचारय (vicāraya) - doubt;]
(There you, me, in battle, dear one, according to faith, you shall conquer. Therefore Indra you today will be. Do not doubt.)
There, dear one, you will conquer me in battle as your faith allows. Therefore, today you will be Indra—do not doubt. (03-218-18)

त्वमेव राजा भद्रं ते त्रैलोक्यस्य ममैव च। करोमि किं च ते शक्र शासनं तद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥०३-२१८-१९॥

abhiṣicyasva devānāṁ senāpatye mahābala। aham indro bhaviṣyāmi tava vākyāt mahābala ॥03-218-21॥

so'bhiṣikto maghavatā sarvair devagaṇaiḥ saha। atīva śuśubhe tatra pūjyamāno maharṣibhiḥ ॥03-218-23॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अभिषिक्तः (abhiṣiktaḥ) - consecrated; मघवता (maghavatā) - by Maghavan (Indra); सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; देवगणैः (devagaṇaiḥ) - by the groups of gods; सह (saha) - together with; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - he shone; तत्र (tatra) - there; पूज्यमानः (pūjyamānaḥ) - being worshipped; महर्षिभिः (maharṣibhiḥ) - by great sages;]
(He, consecrated by Maghavan together with all the hosts of gods, exceedingly shone there, being worshipped by great sages.)
Consecrated by Indra along with all the assemblies of gods, he shone greatly there, honored by the great sages. (03-218-23)
तस्य तत्काञ्चनं छत्रं ध्रियमाणं व्यरोचत। यथैव सुसमिद्धस्य पावकस्यात्ममण्डलम् ॥०३-२१८-२४॥
tasya tat kāñcanaṃ chatraṃ dhriyamāṇaṃ vyarocata। yathaiva susamiddhasya pāvakasya ātma-maṇḍalam ॥03-218-24॥

(Of him, that golden parasol being held shone, just as the own orb of well-kindled fire.)
That golden parasol of his, held above, shone brilliantly, just like the radiant disk of a well-kindled fire. (03-218-24)
विश्वकर्मकृता चास्य दिव्या माला हिरण्मयी। आबद्धा त्रिपुरघ्नेन स्वयमेव यशस्विना ॥०३-२१८-२५॥
viśvakarmakṛtā cāsya divyā mālā hiraṇmayī। ābaddhā tripuraghnena svayameva yaśasvinā ॥03-218-25॥

A divine garland of gold, made by Viśvakarman, was bound upon him by the glorious Tripuraghna himself. (03-218-25)
आगम्य मनुजव्याघ्र सह देव्या परन्तप। अर्चयामास सुप्रीतो भगवान्गोवृषध्वजः ॥०३-२१८-२६॥
āgamya manujavyāghra saha devyā parantapa। arcayāmāsa suprīto bhagavāngo-vṛṣadhvajaḥ ॥03-218-26॥

रुद्रमग्निं द्विजाः प्राहू रुद्रसूनुस्ततस्तु सः। रुद्रेण शुक्रमुत्सृष्टं तच्छ्वेतः पर्वतोऽभवत् ॥ पावकस्येन्द्रियं श्वेते कृत्तिकाभिः कृतं नगे ॥०३-२१८-२७॥
rudram agniṁ dvijāḥ prāhū rudrasūnus tatastu saḥ। rudreṇa śukram utsṛṣṭaṁ tac chvetaḥ parvato 'bhavat॥ pāvakasya indriyaṁ śvete kṛttikābhiḥ kṛtaṁ nage॥03-218-27॥

(Rudra (O Rudra), Agni the twice-born invoked; the son of Rudra then but he, by Rudra, the seed released, that white mountain became. Of Pāvaka's essence on the Śveta (white) [mountain] by the Kṛttikās made on the mountain.)
The twice-born invoked Agni as Rudra; then, the son of Rudra, by Rudra's released seed, became the white mountain. The essence of Pāvaka was established on the Śveta mountain by the Kṛttikās. (03-218-27)
पूज्यमानं तु रुद्रेण दृष्ट्वा सर्वे दिवौकसः। रुद्रसूनुं ततः प्राहुर्गुहं गुणवतां वरम् ॥०३-२१८-२८॥
pūjyamānaṁ tu rudreṇa dṛṣṭvā sarve divaukasaḥ। rudrasūnuṁ tataḥ prāhurguhaṁ guṇavatāṁ varam ॥03-218-28॥
[पूज्यमानं (pūjyamānam) - being honored; तु (tu) - but; रुद्रेण (rudreṇa) - by Rudra; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सर्वे (sarve) - all; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the gods; रुद्रसूनुं (rudrasūnum) - the son of Rudra; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they said; गुहम् (guham) - Guha; गुणवतां (guṇavatām) - of the virtuous; वरम् (varam) - the best;]
(But having seen (him) being honored by Rudra, all the gods then said (these words) to Guha, the son of Rudra, the best of the virtuous.)
But when they saw Guha, the son of Rudra, being honored by Rudra, all the gods then addressed Guha, the best among the virtuous. (03-218-28)
अनुप्रविश्य रुद्रेण वह्निं जातो ह्ययं शिशुः। तत्र जातस्ततः स्कन्दो रुद्रसूनुस्ततोऽभवत् ॥०३-२१८-२९॥
anupraviśya rudreṇa vahniṃ jāto hy ayaṃ śiśuḥ. tatra jātas tataḥ skando rudrasūnus tato 'bhavat ॥03-218-29॥
[अनुप्रविश्य (anupraviśya) - having entered; रुद्रेण (rudreṇa) - by Rudra; वह्निं (vahniṃ) - Fire; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; हि (hi) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; शिशुः (śiśuḥ) - child; तत्र (tatra) - there; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; स्कन्दः (skandaḥ) - Skanda; रुद्रसूनुः (rudrasūnuḥ) - son of Rudra; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Having entered by Rudra the Fire, born indeed this child. There born, from there Skanda, the son of Rudra, from there became.)
Having entered the Fire by Rudra, this child was indeed born there. There, from that birth, Skanda, the son of Rudra, was thus born. (03-218-29)
रुद्रस्य वह्नेः स्वाहायाः षण्णां स्त्रीणां च तेजसा। जातः स्कन्दः सुरश्रेष्ठो रुद्रसूनुस्ततोऽभवत् ॥०३-२१८-३०॥
rudrasya vahneḥ svāhāyāḥ ṣaṇṇāṃ strīṇāṃ ca tejasā। jātaḥ skandaḥ suraśreṣṭho rudrasūnustato'bhavat ॥03-218-30॥

(Of Rudra, of Agni, of Svāhā, of six women and by the energy, was born Skanda, the best among gods; the son of Rudra thereafter became.)
Skanda, the best among gods, was born by the energy of Rudra, Agni, Svāhā, and six women; thus, he became the son of Rudra. (03-218-30)
अरजे वाससी रक्ते वसानः पावकात्मजः। भाति दीप्तवपुः श्रीमान्रक्ताभ्राभ्यामिवांशुमान् ॥०३-२१८-३१॥
araje vāsasī rakte vasānaḥ pāvakātmajaḥ। bhāti dīptavapuḥ śrīmān raktābhrābhyām ivāṁśumān॥03-218-31॥
[अरजे (araje) - unsoiled; clean; वाससी (vāsasī) - clothes (dual); रक्ते (rakte) - red (dual); वसानः (vasānaḥ) - wearing; पावकात्मजः (pāvakātmajaḥ) - son of Pāvaka (Agni, i.e., Hanuman); भाति (bhāti) - shines; दीप्तवपुः (dīptavapuḥ) - of resplendent form; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - radiant; endowed with śrī (splendour); रक्ताभ्राभ्याम् (raktābhrābhyām) - with two red clouds (dual); इव (iva) - like; as if; अंशुमान् (aṁśumān) - the sun;]
(Unsoiled, in two red garments, wearing (them), the son of Pāvaka; shines with resplendent form, radiant, like the sun with two red clouds.)
Hanuman, son of Pāvaka, clad in clean red garments, shines forth with brilliant splendour, radiant like the sun between two red clouds. (03-218-31)
कुक्कुटश्चाग्निना दत्तस्तस्य केतुरलङ्कृतः। रथे समुच्छ्रितो भाति कालाग्निरिव लोहितः ॥०३-२१८-३२॥
kukkuṭaś cāgninā dattaḥ tasya ketur alaṅkṛtaḥ। rathe samucc h rito bhāti kālāgnir iva lohitaḥ॥03-218-32॥
[कुक्कुटः (kukkuṭaḥ) - cock; rooster; च (ca) - and; अग्निना (agninā) - with fire; दत्तः (dattaḥ) - placed; given; तस्य (tasya) - his; its; केतुः (ketuḥ) - banner; flag; अलङ्कृतः (alaṅkṛtaḥ) - adorned; decorated; रथे (rathe) - on the chariot; समुच्छ्रितः (samucc hritaḥ) - raised up; elevated; भाति (bhāti) - shines; appears; कालाग्निः (kālāgniḥ) - fire of time (death); इव (iva) - like; as if; लोहितः (lohitaḥ) - red; glowing red;]
(The cock, placed with fire, his banner adorned, on the chariot raised up shines like the fire of destruction, red.)
The rooster, placed together with fire as his adorned banner, shines elevated on the chariot, red like the fire of time (destruction). (03-218-32)
विवेश कवचं चास्य शरीरं सहजं ततः। युध्यमानस्य देवस्य प्रादुर्भवति तत्सदा ॥०३-२१८-३३॥
viveśa kavacaṃ cāsya śarīraṃ sahajaṃ tataḥ | yudhyamānasya devasya prādurbhavati tat sadā ॥03-218-33॥

शक्तिर्वर्म बलं तेजः कान्तत्वं सत्यमक्षतिः। ब्रह्मण्यत्वमसंमोहो भक्तानां परिरक्षणम् ॥०३-२१८-३४॥

निकृन्तनं च शत्रूणां लोकानां चाभिरक्षणम्। स्कन्देन सह जातानि सर्वाण्येव जनाधिप ॥०३-२१८-३५॥
nikṛntanaṁ ca śatrūṇāṁ lokānāṁ cābhirakṣaṇam। skandena saha jātāni sarvāṇyeva janādhipa ॥03-218-35॥

(Cutting of enemies and protection of worlds, with Skanda, all these indeed have arisen, O lord of people (O king).)
O king, both the destruction of enemies and the protection of the worlds—all of these indeed have come into being together with Skanda. (03-218-35)
एवं देवगणैः सर्वैः सोऽभिषिक्तः स्वलङ्कृतः। बभौ प्रतीतः सुमनाः परिपूर्णेन्दुदर्शनः ॥०३-२१८-३६॥
evaṃ devagaṇaiḥ sarvaiḥ so'bhiṣiktaḥ swalaṅkṛtaḥ। babhau pratītaḥ sumanāḥ paripūrṇendudarśanaḥ॥03-218-36॥

(Thus, by all the groups of gods, he, anointed, well adorned, he shone, appearing, with cheerful mind, with the appearance of the full moon.)

इष्टैः स्वाध्यायघोषैश्च देवतूर्यरवैरपि। देवगन्धर्वगीतैश्च सर्वैरप्सरसां गणैः ॥०३-२१८-३७॥
iṣṭaiḥ svādhyāyaghoṣaiś ca devatūryaravair api। devagandharvagītaiś ca sarvair apsarasāṁ gaṇaiḥ ॥03-218-37॥

[एतैः (etaiḥ) - by these; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; हृष्टतुष्टैः (hṛṣṭatuṣṭaiḥ) - joyful and contented; अलङ्कृतैः (alaṅkṛtaiḥ) - adorned; क्रीडन् (krīḍan) - sporting; इव (iva) - as if; तदा (tadā) - then; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अभिषिक्तः (abhiṣiktaḥ) - anointed; स (sa) - he; पावकिः (pāvakiḥ) - pāvaki (son of fire);]
(By these and by others, various, joyful and contented, adorned (beings), as if sporting then by the gods anointed, he, Pāvaki.)
He, Pāvaki, then as if sporting, was anointed by the gods and adorned by these and other various joyful and contented (beings). (03-218-38)
अभिषिक्तं महासेनमपश्यन्त दिवौकसः। विनिहत्य तमः सूर्यं यथेहाभ्युदितं तथा ॥०३-२१८-३९॥
abhiṣiktaṃ mahāsenam apaśyanta divaukasāḥ। vinihatya tamaḥ sūryaṃ yathehābhyuditaṃ tathā ॥03-218-39॥
[अभिषिक्तं (abhiṣiktam) - anointed; महासेनम् (mahāsenam) - Mahāsena (proper name); अपश्यन्त (apaśyanta) - they saw; दिवौकसः (divaukasāḥ) - the dwellers of heaven; विनिहत्य (vinihatya) - having destroyed; तमः (tamaḥ) - darkness; सूर्यम् (sūryam) - the sun; यथा (yathā) - just as; इह (iha) - here; अभ्युदितम् (abhyuditam) - risen; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(Anointed Mahāsena the dwellers of heaven saw; having destroyed darkness the sun just as here risen so.)
The dwellers of heaven saw the anointed Mahāsena, just as here (we see) the sun risen after having destroyed darkness. (03-218-39)
अथैनमभ्ययुः सर्वा देवसेनाः सहस्रशः। अस्माकं त्वं पतिरिति ब्रुवाणाः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥०३-२१८-४०॥
athainam abhyayuḥ sarvā deva-senāḥ sahasraśaḥ। asmākaṃ tvaṃ patir iti bruvāṇāḥ sarvato diśam॥03-218-40॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; अभ्ययुः (abhyayuḥ) - approached; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; देवसेनाः (deva-senāḥ) - divine armies; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवाणाः (bruvāṇāḥ) - saying; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; दिशम् (diśam) - directions;]
(Then him approached all the divine armies by thousands, saying thus: “You are our lord,” from all sides in the directions.)
Then, all the divine armies, by the thousands, approached him from every direction, saying, “You are our lord.” (03-218-40)
ताः समासाद्य भगवान्सर्वभूतगणैर्वृतः। अर्चितश्च स्तुतश्चैव सान्त्वयामास ता अपि ॥०३-२१८-४१॥
tāḥ samāsādya bhagavān sarvabhūtagaṇair vṛtaḥ। arcitaś ca stutaś caiva sāntvayāmāsa tā api ॥03-218-41॥
[ताः (tāḥ) - those (women); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed one; सर्वभूतगणैः (sarvabhūtagaṇaiḥ) - by all beings' groups; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; अर्चितः (arcitaḥ) - worshipped; च (ca) - and; स्तुतः (stutaḥ) - praised; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सान्त्वयामास (sāntvayāmāsa) - consoled; ता (tā) - those (women); अपि (api) - also;]
(Having approached those (women), the blessed one, surrounded by all beings' groups, being worshipped and indeed praised, consoled those (women) also.)
The blessed one, surrounded by hosts of all beings, having approached those women, and being worshipped and praised, also consoled them. (03-218-41)
शतक्रतुश्चाभिषिच्य स्कन्दं सेनापतिं तदा। सस्मार तां देवसेनां या सा तेन विमोक्षिता ॥०३-२१८-४२॥
śatakratuś cābhiṣicya skandaṃ senāpatiṃ tadā। sasmāra tāṃ devasenāṃ yā sā tena vimokṣitā ॥03-218-42॥
[शतक्रतु: (śatakratuḥ) - the hundred-sacrificed one (epithet of Indra); च (ca) - and; अभिषिच्य (abhiṣicya) - having anointed; स्कन्दम् (skandam) - Skanda; सेनापतिम् (senāpatim) - commander of the army; तदा (tadā) - then; सस्मार (sasmāra) - he remembered; ताम् (tām) - her; देवसेनाम् (devasenām) - Devasena; या (yā) - who; सा (sā) - she; तेन (tena) - by him; विमोक्षिता (vimokṣitā) - was set free;]
(The hundred-sacrificed one and, having anointed Skanda commander of the army then, remembered her Devasena who she by him was set free.)
Indra, having then anointed Skanda as commander of the army, remembered Devasena—she who was released by him. (03-218-42)
अयं तस्याः पतिर्नूनं विहितो ब्रह्मणा स्वयम्। इति चिन्त्यानयामास देवसेनां स्वलङ्कृताम् ॥०३-२१८-४३॥
ayaṁ tasyāḥ patir nūnaṁ vihito brahmaṇā svayam| iti cintyānayāmāsa devasenāṁ svalaṅkṛtām ॥03-218-43॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; पतिः (patir) - husband; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - appointed; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahmā; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; इति (iti) - thus; चिन्त्य (cintya) - having thought; अनयामास (anayāmāsa) - he led; देवसेनाम् (devasenām) - Devasenā; स्वलङ्कृताम् (svalaṅkṛtām) - well-adorned;]
(This of her husband certainly appointed by Brahmā himself—thus having thought, he led Devasenā, well-adorned.)
Thinking, 'This is certainly the husband appointed for her by Brahmā himself,' he led the well-adorned Devasenā. (03-218-43)
स्कन्दं चोवाच बलभिदियं कन्या सुरोत्तम। अजाते त्वयि निर्दिष्टा तव पत्नी स्वयम्भुवा ॥०३-२१८-४४॥
skandaṃ covāca balabhid iyaṃ kanyā surottama। ajāte tvayi nirdiṣṭā tava patnī svayambhuvā ॥03-218-44॥
[स्कन्दम् (skandam) - to Skanda; च (ca) - and; उवाच (uvāca) - said; बलभित् (balabhid) - the slayer of Vala (Indra); इयं (iyaṃ) - this; कन्या (kanyā) - girl; सुरोत्तम (surottama) - O best of the gods; अजाते (ajāte) - not yet born; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; निर्दिष्टा (nirdiṣṭā) - designated; तव (tava) - your; पत्नी (patnī) - wife; स्वयम्भुवा (svayambhuvā) - by Svayambhū (the Self-born, Brahmā);]
(And Balabhit (Indra) said to Skanda: "O best of the gods, this girl has been designated as your wife by Svayambhu, when you were not yet born." (03-218-44))

तस्मात्त्वमस्या विधिवत्पाणिं मन्त्रपुरस्कृतम्। गृहाण दक्षिणं देव्याः पाणिना पद्मवर्चसम् ॥०३-२१८-४५॥
tasmāttvamasyā vidhivatpāṇiṁ mantrapuraskṛtam। gṛhāṇa dakṣiṇaṁ devyāḥ pāṇinā padmavarcasam ॥03-218-45॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; from that; on that account; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to ritual; in the prescribed manner; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; मन्त्र-पुरस्कृतम् (mantra-puraskṛtam) - preceded by mantras; with mantras as prelude; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - take; दक्षिणम् (dakṣiṇam) - right (hand); देव्याः (devyāḥ) - of the lady; of the goddess; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with (your) hand; पद्मवर्चसम् (padmavarcasam) - radiant as a lotus;]
(Therefore you, of her, according to ritual, hand, preceded by mantras, take, right (hand), of the lady, with (your) hand, radiant as a lotus.)
Therefore, you should, according to ritual and with mantras, take the hand of the lady—her right hand, radiant as a lotus—with your own hand. (03-218-45)
एवमुक्तः स जग्राह तस्याः पाणिं यथाविधि। बृहस्पतिर्मन्त्रविधिं जजाप च जुहाव च ॥०३-२१८-४६॥
evam-uktaḥ sa jagrāha tasyāḥ pāṇiṁ yathā-vidhi. bṛhaspatir mantra-vidhiṁ jajāpa ca juhāva ca ॥03-218-46॥

(Thus addressed he took her hand according to the rule. Bṛhaspati recited the mantra procedure and offered (oblations) and.)
Thus addressed, he took her hand according to the prescribed rites. Bṛhaspati performed the mantra procedure, reciting and offering oblations. (03-218-46)
एवं स्कन्दस्य महिषीं देवसेनां विदुर्बुधाः। षष्ठीं यां ब्राह्मणाः प्राहुर्लक्ष्मीमाशां सुखप्रदाम् ॥ सिनीवालीं कुहूं चैव सद्वृत्तिमपराजिताम् ॥०३-२१८-४७॥
evaṁ skandasya mahiṣīṁ devasenāṁ vidur budhāḥ। ṣaṣṭhīṁ yāṁ brāhmaṇāḥ prāhur lakṣmīm āśāṁ sukhapradām॥ sinīvālīṁ kuhūṁ caiva sadvṛttim aparājitām॥03-218-47॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; स्कन्दस्य (skandasya) - of Skanda; महिषीं (mahiṣīm) - queen; देवसेनाम् (devasenām) - Devasena; विदुः (viduḥ) - (they) know; बुधाः (budhāḥ) - the wise; षष्ठीं (ṣaṣṭhīm) - Ṣaṣṭhī (the goddess of the sixth day); याम् (yām) - whom; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - (they) call; लक्ष्मīm (lakṣmīm) - Lakṣmī; आशाम् (āśām) - Hope; सुखप्रदाम् (sukhapradām) - giver of happiness; सिनीवालीम् (sinīvālīm) - Sinīvālī; कुहूम् (kuhūm) - Kuhū; चैव (ca eva) - and also; सद्वृत्तिम् (sadvṛttim) - of good conduct; अपराजिताम् (aparājitām) - unconquered;]
(Thus, the wise know Devasena, the queen of Skanda. The Brāhmaṇas call her Ṣaṣṭhī, Lakṣmī, Hope, giver of happiness, Sinīvālī, Kuhū, and also of good conduct, unconquered.)
Thus, the wise recognize Devasena, the queen of Skanda. Brāhmaṇas call her Ṣaṣṭhī, Lakṣmī, Āśā (Hope), the bestower of happiness, Sinīvālī, Kuhū, one of good conduct, and the unconquered one. (03-218-47)
यदा स्कन्दः पतिर्लब्धः शाश्वतो देवसेनया। तदा तमाश्रयल्लक्ष्मीः स्वयं देवी शरीरिणी ॥०३-२१८-४८॥
yadā skandaḥ patir labdhaḥ śāśvato devasenayā। tadā tam āśrayal lakṣmīḥ svayaṃ devī śarīriṇī ॥03-218-48॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; स्कन्दः (skandaḥ) - Skanda; पतिः (patir) - husband; लब्धः (labdhaḥ) - obtained; शाश्वतः (śāśvataḥ) - eternal; देवसेनया (devasenayā) - by Devasena; तदा (tadā) - then; तम् (tam) - him; आश्रयत् (āśrayat) - resorted to; लक्ष्मीः (lakṣmīḥ) - Lakṣmī; स्वयम् (svayam) - herself; देवी (devī) - the goddess; शरीरिणी (śarīriṇī) - embodied;]
(When Skanda, the eternal husband, was obtained by Devasena, then Lakṣmī the goddess herself, embodied, resorted to him.)
When Skanda became the eternal husband of Devasena, then goddness Lakṣmī herself, in embodied form, resorted to him. (03-218-48)
श्रीजुष्टः पञ्चमीं स्कन्दस्तस्माच्छ्रीपञ्चमी स्मृता। षष्ठ्यां कृतार्थोऽभूद्यस्मात्तस्मात्षष्ठी महातिथिः ॥०३-२१८-४९॥
śrījuṣṭaḥ pañcamīṃ skandastasmācchrīpañcamī smṛtā। ṣaṣṭhyāṃ kṛtārtho'bhūdyasmāttasmātṣaṣṭhī mahātithiḥ॥03-218-49॥
[श्रीजुष्टः (śrījuṣṭaḥ) - honored by auspiciousness; पञ्चमीं (pañcamīm) - the fifth day; स्कन्दः (skandaḥ) - Skanda (Kārttikeya); तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; श्रीपञ्चमी (śrīpañcamī) - Śrī Pañcamī (the fifth day favored by prosperity); स्मृता (smṛtā) - is called; षष्ठ्यां (ṣaṣṭhyām) - on the sixth day; कृतार्थः (kṛtārthaḥ) - fulfilled purpose; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because of which; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; षष्ठी (ṣaṣṭhī) - the sixth day; महातिथिः (mahātithiḥ) - great sacred day;]
(Honored by auspiciousness, Skanda (Kārttikeya) the fifth day; therefore Śrī Pañcamī is called. On the sixth day fulfilled purpose became; because of which therefore, the sixth day (is) a great sacred day.)
Since Skanda was honored by auspiciousness on the fifth day, that day is called Śrī Pañcamī. Because he achieved his purpose on the sixth day, that sixth day is regarded as a great sacred day. (03-218-49)
