śriyā juṣṭaṃ mahāsenaṃ deva-senāpatiṃ kṛtam। saptaṛṣipatnyaḥ ṣaḍdevyaḥ tat-sakāśam athāgamann ॥03-219-1॥
[श्रिया (śriyā) - by beauty; by fortune; जुष्टं (juṣṭam) - adorned; endowed; महासेनं (mahāsenaṃ) - Mahasena; (name: 'great army' — Karttikeya); देवसेनापतिं (deva-senāpatiṃ) - commander of the army of the gods; कृतम् (kṛtam) - made; appointed; सप्तर्षिपत्न्यः (saptaṛṣipatnyaḥ) - wives of the seven Ṛṣis; षट् देव्यः (ṣaḍdevyaḥ) - six goddesses; तत्सकाशम् (tat-sakāśam) - to his presence; अथ (atha) - then; आगमन् (āgaman) - came;]
(Adorned by beauty, Mahasena, the commander of the army of the gods, having been appointed. The wives of the seven Ṛṣis, the six goddesses, then came to his presence.)
Adorned with beauty, Mahasena, made the commander of the gods' army, was approached then by the wives of the seven Ṛṣis, the six goddesses. (03-219-1)
ऋषिभिः सम्परित्यक्ता धर्मयुक्ता महाव्रताः। द्रुतमागम्य चोचुस्ता देवसेनापतिं प्रभुम् ॥०३-२१९-२॥
ṛṣibhiḥ samparityaktā dharmayuktā mahāvratāḥ। drutam āgamya cocusta deva-senāpatiṃ prabhum ॥03-219-2॥
[ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; सम्परित्यक्ता (samparityaktā) - completely abandoned; धर्मयुक्ता (dharmayuktā) - endowed with righteousness; महाव्रताः (mahāvratāḥ) - great observers of vows; द्रुतम् (drutam) - quickly; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; च (ca) - and; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they said; ता (tā) - they (those); देवसेनापतिं (deva-senāpatiṃ) - to the commander of the divine army; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - lord;]
(By the sages completely abandoned, endowed with righteousness, great observers of vows, quickly having come and they said those to the commander of the divine army, the lord.)
Having been completely abandoned by the sages, those great observers of vows endowed with righteousness quickly came and spoke to the lord, the commander of the divine army. (03-219-2)
वयं पुत्र परित्यक्ता भर्तृभिर्देवसंमितैः। अकारणाद्रुषा तात पुण्यस्थानात्परिच्युताः ॥०३-२१९-३॥
vayaṃ putra parityaktā bhartṛbhir deva-saṃmitaiḥ। akāraṇād ruṣā tāta puṇya-sthānāt paricyutāḥ॥03-219-3॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; पुत्र (putra) - son; परित्यक्ता (parityaktāḥ) - abandoned; भर्तृभिः (bhartṛbhiḥ) - by husbands; देवसंमितैः (deva-saṃmitaiḥ) - equal to gods; अकारणात् (akāraṇāt) - without cause; रुषा (ruṣā) - with anger; तात (tāta) - O dear one; पुण्यस्थानात् (puṇya-sthānāt) - from the virtuous place; परिच्युताः (paricyutāḥ) - fallen from;]
(We, son, abandoned by husbands equal to gods, without cause with anger, O dear one, from virtuous place fallen.)
We, dear son, have been abandoned by our husbands, who were as gods, and, without any reason, have fallen from the virtuous place due to their anger. (03-219-3)
अस्माभिः किल जातस्त्वमिति केनाप्युदाहृतम्। असत्यमेतत्संश्रुत्य तस्मान्नस्त्रातुमर्हसि ॥०३-२१९-४॥
asmābhiḥ kila jātastvamiti kenāpyudāhṛtam। asatyametatsaṃśrutya tasmān nas trātumarhasi॥03-219-4॥
[अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; किल (kila) - indeed; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इति (iti) - thus; केनापि (kenāpi) - by someone; उदाहृतम् (udāhṛtam) - spoken; असत्यं (asatyaṃ) - untrue; एतत् (etat) - this; संश्रुत्य (saṃśrutya) - having heard; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; नः (naḥ) - us; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to protect; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(By us indeed 'you are born' thus by someone spoken; untrue this having heard therefore us to protect you ought.)
Someone has indeed said 'you are born of us.' This is untrue; therefore, having heard it, you ought to protect us. (03-219-4)
अक्षयश्च भवेत्स्वर्गस्त्वत्प्रसादाद्धि नः प्रभो। त्वां पुत्रं चाप्यभीप्सामः कृत्वैतदनृणो भव ॥०३-२१९-५॥
akṣayaś ca bhavet svargas tvat-prasādād dhi naḥ prabho। tvāṃ putraṃ cāpy abhīpsāmaḥ kṛtvaitad anṛṇo bhava ॥03-219-5॥
[अक्षयः (akṣayaḥ) - imperishable; eternal; च (ca) - and; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; may become; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; त्वत्प्रसादात् (tvat-prasādāt) - from your grace; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; पुत्रम् (putram) - as a son; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अभीप्सामः (abhīpsāmaḥ) - we desire; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; एतत् (etat) - this; अनृणः (anṛṇaḥ) - free from debt; भव (bhava) - be; ॥०३-२१९-५॥ (॥03-219-5॥) - ;]
(Imperishable and may heaven be, from your grace indeed for us, O lord. You as son also we desire, having made this, free from debt be.)
O lord, may heaven be eternal for us, indeed by your grace. We also desire you as a son; having done this, be free from (any) debt. (03-219-5)

mātaro hi bhavatyo me suto vo'ham aninditāḥ। yac cābhīpsatha tat sarvaṃ sambhaviṣyati vas tathā॥03-219-6॥
[मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; हि (hi) - indeed; भवत्यः (bhavatyaḥ) - you (plural, respectful address); मे (me) - my; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; वः (vaḥ) - your; अहम् (aham) - I; अनिन्दिताः (aninditāḥ) - blameless ones; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अभीप्सथ (abhīpsatha) - you desire; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; सम्भविष्यति (sambhaviṣyati) - will come to pass; वः (vaḥ) - for you; तथा (tathā) - in that way;]
(Mothers indeed you are to me; son I am of yours, O blameless ones. And which you desire, that all will come to pass for you in that way (03-219-6).)
Indeed, you are mothers to me, O blameless ones, and I am your son. Whatever you desire, all of that will come to pass for you just so. (03-219-6)

एवमुक्ते ततः शक्रं किं कार्यमिति सोऽब्रवीत्। उक्तः स्कन्देन ब्रूहीति सोऽब्रवीद्वासवस्ततः ॥०३-२१९-७॥
evam-ukte tataḥ śakraṃ kiṃ kāryam iti saḥ abravīt। uktaḥ skandena brūhi iti saḥ abravīt vāsavaḥ tataḥ॥03-219-7॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - when (it was) said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शक्रं (śakram) - Śakra (Indra); किं (kiṃ) - what; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done (action); इति (iti) - thus; सः (saḥ) - he; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; स्कन्देन (skandena) - by Skanda; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak (imperative); इति (iti) - thus; सः (saḥ) - he; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Vāsava (Indra); ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(Thus, when (it was) said, then Śakra (Indra) "what is to be done" thus he said. Addressed by Skanda, "speak" thus he, Vāsava (Indra), then said.)
Thus, when those words were spoken, then Śakra (Indra) said, "What should be done?" Addressed by Skanda, "Speak," so then Vāsava (Indra) replied. (03-219-7)
अभिजित्स्पर्धमाना तु रोहिण्या कन्यसी स्वसा। इच्छन्ती ज्येष्ठतां देवी तपस्तप्तुं वनं गता ॥०३-२१९-८॥
abhijit-spar̥dhamānā tu rohiṇyā kanyasī svasā। icchantī jyeṣṭhatāṁ devī tapas-taptuṁ vanaṁ gatā ॥03-219-8॥
[अभिजित् (abhijit) - Abhijit (proper noun); स्पर्धमाना (spar̥dhamānā) - competing; striving; तु (tu) - but; however; रोहिण्या (rohiṇyā) - with Rohiṇī; कन्यसी (kanyasī) - younger (sister); स्वसा (svasā) - sister; इच्छन्ती (icchantī) - desiring; wishing; ज्येष्ठताम् (jyeṣṭhatām) - seniority; the state of being eldest; देवी (devī) - the goddess; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; penance; तप्तुम् (taptum) - to perform; to undergo; वनम् (vanam) - forest; गता (gatā) - having gone;]
(Abhijit, competing but with Rohiṇī, the younger sister, desiring seniority, the goddess, to perform austerity, went to the forest.)
But Abhijit, the younger sister of Rohiṇī, in competition and wishing to become eldest, the goddess went to the forest to perform penance. (03-219-8)
तत्र मूढोऽस्मि भद्रं ते नक्षत्रं गगनाच्च्युतम्। कालं त्विमं परं स्कन्द ब्रह्मणा सह चिन्तय ॥०३-२१९-९॥
tatra mūḍho'smi bhadraṃ te nakṣatraṃ gaganāccyutam। kālaṃ tvimaṃ paraṃ skanda brahmaṇā saha cintaya ॥03-219-9॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - bewildered; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - well-being; ते (te) - to you; नक्षत्रम् (nakṣatram) - star; गगनात् (gaganāt) - from the sky; च्युतम् (cyutam) - fallen; कालम् (kālam) - time; त्व् (tv) - you; इमम् (imam) - this; परम् (param) - supreme; स्कन्द (skanda) - Skanda; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - with Brahmā; सह (saha) - together with; चिन्तय (cintaya) - consider;]
(There bewildered I am, well-being to you, the star from the sky fallen. Time, you this supreme, Skanda, with Brahmā together, consider.)
I am bewildered there—may well-being be to you; the star has fallen from the sky. Skanda, together with Brahmā, consider this supreme time. (03-219-9)
धनिष्ठादिस्तदा कालो ब्रह्मणा परिनिर्मितः। रोहिण्याद्योऽभवत्पूर्वमेवं सङ्ख्या समाभवत् ॥०३-२१९-१०॥
dhaniṣṭhādistadā kālo brahmaṇā parinirmitaḥ। rohiṇyādyo'bhavatpūrvamevaṃ saṅkhyā samābhavat ॥03-219-10॥
[धनिष्ठादिः (dhaniṣṭhādiḥ) - beginning with Dhaniṣṭhā; तदा (tadā) - then; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahmā; परिनिर्मितः (parinirmitaḥ) - completely created; रोहिण्याद्यः (rohiṇyādyaḥ) - beginning with Rohiṇī; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सङ्ख्या (saṅkhyā) - enumeration; समाभवत् (samābhavat) - became equal;]
(Then the time beginning with Dhaniṣṭhā was completely created by Brahmā. Previously, starting with Rohiṇī, thus, enumeration was equal.)
At that time, Brahmā completely established the period beginning with Dhaniṣṭhā. Before that, enumeration began with Rohiṇī in the same way. (03-219-10)
एवमुक्ते तु शक्रेण त्रिदिवं कृत्तिका गताः। नक्षत्रं शकटाकारं भाति तद्वह्निदैवतम् ॥०३-२१९-११॥
evam-ukte tu śakreṇa tridivaṃ kṛttikā gatāḥ। nakṣatraṃ śakaṭākāraṃ bhāti tad-vahnidaivatam ॥03-219-11॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been spoken; तु (tu) - but; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra (Indra); त्रिदिवम् (tridivam) - to heaven; कृत्तिका (kṛttikā) - the Kṛttikā stars; गताः (gatāḥ) - went; नक्षत्रम् (nakṣatram) - constellation; शकटाकारम् (śakaṭākāram) - cart-shaped; भाति (bhāti) - shines; तत् (tat) - that; वह्नि-दैवतम् (vahni-daivatam) - having Agni as deity;]
(Thus, having been spoken by Śakra, to heaven the Kṛttikā went. The constellation cart-shaped shines; that (is) having Agni as deity.)
After Śakra had thus spoken, the Kṛttikās went to heaven. That cart-shaped constellation shines and its deity is Agni. (03-219-11)
विनता चाब्रवीत्स्कन्दं मम त्वं पिण्डदः सुतः। इच्छामि नित्यमेवाहं त्वया पुत्र सहासितुम् ॥०३-२१९-१२॥
vinatā cābravītskandaṃ mama tvaṃ piṇḍadaḥ sutaḥ। icchāmi nityamevāhaṃ tvayā putra sahāsitum ॥03-219-12॥

(Vinata and said Skanda, my you piṇḍa-giver son; I desire always indeed I with you, son, with to sit.)
And Vinata said to Skanda, "You are my son, the giver of piṇḍa (offerings). I always wish to sit with you, O son." (03-219-12)

एवमस्तु नमस्तेऽस्तु पुत्रस्नेहात्प्रशाधि माम्। स्नुषया पूज्यमाना वै देवि वत्स्यसि नित्यदा ॥०३-२१९-१३॥
evam astu namas te'stu putrasnehāt praśādhi mām। snuṣayā pūjyamānā vai devi vatsyasi nityadā ॥03-219-13॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; नमः (namas) - salutation; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; पुत्रस्नेहात् (putrasnehāt) - from affection for (your) son; प्रशाधि (praśādhi) - instruct (me); माम् (mām) - me; स्नुषया (snuṣayā) - by your daughter-in-law; पूज्यमाना (pūjyamānā) - being worshipped; वै (vai) - indeed; देवि (devi) - O lady; वत्स्यसि (vatsyasi) - you will dwell; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always;]
(Thus let it be. Salutation to you, let there be. From affection for (your) son, instruct me. Being worshipped by your daughter-in-law indeed, O lady, you will dwell always.)
Let it be so. My salutations to you; because of affection for your son, direct me. O lady, being continually worshipped by your daughter-in-law, you will always reside here. (03-219-13)

अथ मातृगणः सर्वः स्कन्दं वचनमब्रवीत्। वयं सर्वस्य लोकस्य मातरः कविभिः स्तुताः ॥ इच्छामो मातरस्तुभ्यं भवितुं पूजयस्व नः ॥०३-२१९-१४॥
atha mātṛgaṇaḥ sarvaḥ skandaṃ vacanam abravīt। vayaṃ sarvasya lokasya mātaraḥ kavibhiḥ stutāḥ ॥ icchāmo mātaraḥ tubhyaṃ bhavituṃ pūjayasva naḥ ॥03-219-14॥
[अथ (atha) - then; मातृगणः (mātṛgaṇaḥ) - the host of mothers; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; स्कन्दं (skandaṃ) - to Skanda; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; वयम् (vayam) - we; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; कविभिः (kavibhiḥ) - by poets; स्तुताः (stutāḥ) - praised; इच्छामः (icchāmaḥ) - we desire; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; तुभ्यम् (tubhyam) - for you; भवितुम् (bhavitum) - to become; पूजयस्व (pūjayasva) - do honor; नः (naḥ) - us;]
(Then the host of all mothers spoke speech to Skanda. We, mothers of all the world, praised by poets, we desire, O mother, to become for you; do honor us. (03-219-14))
Then the entire host of mothers spoke to Skanda, saying: "We, the mothers of all the world, praised by poets, desire to become your mothers; honor us." (03-219-14)

mātaras tu bhavatyo me bhavatīnām ahaṃ sutaḥ। ucyatāṃ yan mayā kāryaṃ bhavatīnām athep + sitam ॥03-219-15॥
[मातरः (mātaras) - mothers; तु (tu) - but; भवत्यः (bhavatyo) - you (respected ladies); मे (me) - my; भवत्ीनाम् (bhavatīnām) - of you (respected ladies); अहम् (aham) - I; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; उच्यताम् (ucyatām) - let it be said; यत् (yat) - what; मया (mayā) - by me; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; भवत्ीनाम् (bhavatīnām) - of you (respected ladies); अथ (atha) - then; इप्सितम् (ipsitam) - desired;]
(Mothers but you my, of you (respected ladies), I (am) son; let it be said what by me to be done, of you (respected ladies), then desired.)
But mothers, you are mine, and I am your son; let it be stated, what should be done by me which is then desired by you. (03-219-15)

The mothers said;
यास्तु ता मातरः पूर्वं लोकस्यास्य प्रकल्पिताः। अस्माकं तद्भवेत्स्थानं तासां चैव न तद्भवेत् ॥०३-२१९-१६॥
yās tu tā mātaraḥ pūrvaṃ lokasyāsya prakalpitāḥ। asmākaṃ tad bhavet sthānaṃ tāsāṃ caiva na tad bhavet ॥03-219-16॥
[याः (yāḥ) - who; (feminine plural nominative); तु (tu) - but; ता (tā) - those; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; (feminine plural nominative); पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; (genitive singular); अस्य (asya) - of this; (genitive singular); प्रकल्पिताः (prakalpitāḥ) - assigned; established; अस्माकं (asmākaṃ) - our; (genitive plural); तत् (tat) - that; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; should be; (optative); स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; position; तासाम् (tāsām) - of those (women); (genitive plural); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; should be; (optative);]
(Who but those mothers formerly of this world assigned, our that place should become, of those and indeed not that should become.)
But the place which was formerly assigned in this world to those mothers—that should become ours, and not theirs. (03-219-16)
भवेम पूज्या लोकस्य न ताः पूज्याः सुरर्षभ। प्रजास्माकं हृतास्ताभिस्त्वत्कृते ताः प्रयच्छ नः ॥०३-२१९-१७॥
bhavema pūjyā lokasya na tāḥ pūjyāḥ surarṣabha। prajāsmākaṃ hṛtāstābhistvatkṛte tāḥ prayaccha naḥ ॥03-219-17॥
[भवेम (bhavema) - may we become; पूज्या (pūjyāḥ) - worthy of honor; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the people; न (na) - not; ताः (tāḥ) - they; पूज्याः (pūjyāḥ) - worthy of honor; सुरर्षभ (surarṣabha) - O best of gods; प्रजास्माकं (prajāsmākaṃ) - our offspring; हृताः (hṛtāḥ) - taken away; ताभिः (tābhiḥ) - by them; त्वत्कृते (tvatkṛte) - for your sake; ताः (tāḥ) - them; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give back; नः (naḥ) - to us;]
(May we become worthy of honor of the people, not they, O best of gods. Our offspring were taken away by them for your sake; give them back to us.)
O best of gods, let us become honored among people, not they. Our children were taken away by them for your sake; return them to us. (03-219-17)

The offspring already given cannot be enjoyed by you. I shall give you another offspring, whichever you desire in your mind. (03-219-18)

apatats tadā bhūmau visañjño'tha kṣudhānvitaḥ। skandena so'bhyanujñāto raudrarūpo'bhavadgrahaḥ ॥ skandāpasmāramityāhurgrahaṁ taṁ dvijasattamāḥ ॥03-219-25॥

(But Vinatā, the very dreadful, is described as the affliction by birds. The demoness Pūtanā — they call that Pūtanā-possession, one should know.)

दैत्यानां या दितिर्माता तामाहुर्मुखमण्डिकाम्। अत्यर्थं शिशुमांसेन सम्प्रहृष्टा दुरासदा ॥०३-२१९-२९॥
daityānāṃ yā ditir mātā tām āhur mukhamaṇḍikām। atyarthaṃ śiśumāṃsena samprahṛṣṭā durāsadā ॥03-219-29॥

तासामेव कुमारीणां पतयस्ते प्रकीर्तिताः। अज्ञायमाना गृह्णन्ति बालकान्रौद्रकर्मिणः ॥०३-२१९-३१॥
tāsāmeva kumāriṇāṃ patayaste prakīrtitāḥ। ajñāyamānā gṛhṇanti bālakānraudra-karmiṇaḥ॥03-219-31॥

When Kadru had become of subtle form and entered the pregnant woman, she ate the embryo there; then she gave birth to a nāga. (03-219-36)
गन्धर्वाणां तु या माता सा गर्भं गृह्य गच्छति। ततो विलीनगर्भा सा मानुषी भुवि दृश्यते ॥०३-२१९-३७॥
gandharvāṇāṃ tu yā mātā sā garbhaṃ gṛhya gacchati। tato vilīnagarbha sā mānuṣī bhuvi dṛśyate ॥03-219-37॥
[गन्धर्वाणां (gandharvāṇāṃ) - of the Gandharvas; तु (tu) - but; या (yā) - who; माता (mātā) - mother; सा (sā) - she; गर्भं (garbhaṃ) - embryo; गृह्य (gṛhya) - having taken; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; ततः (tataḥ) - then; विलीनगर्भा (vilīnagarbha) - having lost the embryo; सा (sā) - she; मानुषी (mānuṣī) - human woman; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen;]
(But the mother of the Gandharvas, who, having taken the embryo, goes; then, having lost the embryo, she is seen as a human woman on earth.)
But the mother of the Gandharvas, having conceived the embryo and then lost it, thereafter appears as a human woman on earth. (03-219-37)
या जनित्री त्वप्सरसां गर्भमास्ते प्रगृह्य सा। उपविष्टं ततो गर्भं कथयन्ति मनीषिणः ॥०३-२१९-३८॥
yā janitrī tvapsarasāṃ garbham āste pragṛhya sā। upaviṣṭaṃ tato garbhaṃ kathayanti manīṣiṇaḥ॥03-219-38॥

(Who mother of the Apsarases embryo remains having taken, she; having sat near then embryo the wise say.)
The one who, having received the embryo of the Apsarases, remains—her, when seated, the wise then call (the) embryo. (03-219-38)
लोहितस्योदधेः कन्या धात्री स्कन्दस्य सा स्मृता। लोहितायनिरित्येवं कदम्बे सा हि पूज्यते ॥०३-२१९-३९॥
lohitasyodadheḥ kanyā dhātrī skandasya sā smṛtā। lohitāyanirityevaṁ kadambe sā hi pūjyate॥03-219-39॥

(Of Lohita the ocean's daughter, the nurse of Skanda she is regarded. Lohitāyani thus in Kadamba she indeed is worshipped. (03-219-39))
The daughter of Lohita, the ocean, who is considered the nurse of Skanda, is known as Lohitāyani; thus, she is indeed worshipped at Kadamba. (03-219-39)
पुरुषेषु यथा रुद्रस्तथार्या प्रमदास्वपि। आर्या माता कुमारस्य पृथक्कामार्थमिज्यते ॥०३-२१९-४०॥
puruṣeṣu yathā rudras tathāryā pramadāsv api। āryā mātā kumārasya pṛthak kāmārtham ijyate ॥03-219-40॥
[पुरुषेषु (puruṣeṣu) - among men; यथा (yathā) - just as; रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; तथा (tathā) - so; आर्या (āryā) - noble woman; प्रमदासु (pramadāsu) - among women; अपि (api) - also; आर्या (āryā) - noble woman; माता (mātā) - mother; कुमारस्य (kumārasya) - of the boy; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; काम अर्थम् (kāma-artham) - for the purpose of desire; इज्यते (ijyate) - is sought after;]
(Among men, just as Rudra (is distinguished), so (is) the noble woman among women also. The noble mother of the boy is sought separately for the purpose of desire.)
Just as Rudra stands among men, so also among women does the noble lady. The noble mother of the boy is sought apart for the sake of desire. (03-219-40)
एवमेते कुमाराणां मया प्रोक्ता महाग्रहाः। यावत्षोडश वर्षाणि अशिवास्ते शिवास्ततः ॥०३-२१९-४१॥
evam ete kumārāṇām mayā proktā mahāgrahāḥ। yāvat ṣoḍaśa varṣāṇi aśivāḥ te śivāḥ tataḥ॥03-219-41॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एते (ete) - these; कुमाराणां (kumārāṇām) - of the boys; मया (mayā) - by me; प्रोक्ता (proktā) - declared; महाग्रहाः (mahāgrahāḥ) - great afflictions; यावत् (yāvat) - so long as; षोडश (ṣoḍaśa) - sixteen; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; अशिवाः (aśivāḥ) - inauspicious; ते (te) - they; शिवाः (śivāḥ) - auspicious; ततः (tataḥ) - after that;]
(Thus, these great afflictions of the boys have been declared by me. So long as sixteen years, they are inauspicious; they (become) auspicious after that.)
In this way, I have described to you the great afflictions affecting boys. For sixteen years, they are inauspicious; after that, they become auspicious. (03-219-41)
ये च मातृगणाः प्रोक्ताः पुरुषाश्चैव ये ग्रहाः। सर्वे स्कन्दग्रहा नाम ज्ञेया नित्यं शरीरिभिः ॥०३-२१९-४२॥
ye ca mātṛ-gaṇāḥ proktāḥ puruṣāś caiva ye grahāḥ। sarve skanda-grahā nāma jñeyā nityaṃ śarīribhih ॥03-219-42॥
[ये (ye) - who; (those who); च (ca) - and; मातृगणाः (mātṛ-gaṇāḥ) - groups of mother goddesses; प्रोक्ताः (proktāḥ) - have been spoken (of); पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; (male beings); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; just; ये (ye) - who; (those who); ग्रहाः (grahāḥ) - grahas (spirit-entities, possessors); सर्वे (sarve) - all; स्कन्दग्रहाः (skanda-grahāḥ) - Skanda-grahas (a class of grahas); नाम (nāma) - by name; (so called); ज्ञेया (jñeyā) - should be known; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; शरीरिभिः (śarīribhih) - by embodied beings;]
(Who and mother groups have been spoken (of), and male beings also who are grahas; all Skanda-grahas by name should be known always by embodied beings.)
Those who are called mother-goddess groups and those male grahas mentioned— all these are known by the name Skanda-grahas and should always be recognized as such by embodied beings. (03-219-42)
तेषां प्रशमनं कार्यं स्नानं धूपमथाञ्जनम्। बलिकर्मोपहारश्च स्कन्दस्येज्या विशेषतः ॥०३-२१९-४३॥
teṣāṃ praśamanaṃ kāryaṃ snānaṃ dhūpam athāñjanam। balikarmopahāraś ca skandasy ejyā viśeṣataḥ ॥03-219-43॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; प्रशमनं (praśamanam) - pacification; कार्यं (kāryam) - should be done; स्नानं (snānam) - bathing; धूपम् (dhūpam) - incense; अथ (atha) - and then; आञ्जनम् (āñjanam) - anointing; बलिकर्म (balikarma) - offering (of oblation); उपहारः (upahāraḥ) - presentation (of gifts); च (ca) - and; स्कन्दस्य (skandasya) - of Skanda; इज्या (ijyā) - worship; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(Of them, pacification should be done: bathing, incense, and then anointing, and offering of oblation and presentation of gifts; worship of Skanda especially.)
Their pacification should be accomplished by bathing, incense, anointing, offering of oblations and gifts, and especially the worship of Skanda. (03-219-43)
एवमेतेऽर्चिताः सर्वे प्रयच्छन्ति शुभं नृणाम्। आयुर्वीर्यं च राजेन्द्र सम्यक्पूजानमस्कृताः ॥०३-२१९-४४॥
evam ete 'arcitāḥ sarve prayacchanti śubhaṁ nṛṇām। āyur vīryaṁ ca rājendra samyak-pūjānamaskṛtāḥ ॥03-219-44॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एते (ete) - these; अर्चिताः (arcitāḥ) - worshipped; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - bestow; शुभम् (śubham) - good; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - to men; आयुः (āyuḥ) - life; वीर्यं (vīryam) - energy; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; पूजा (pūjā) - worship; अनमस्कृताः (anamaskṛtāḥ) - those revered;]
(Thus these, all worshipped, bestow good to men. Life and energy also, O king, properly worshipped and revered.)
Thus, O king, all these, when properly worshipped and revered, bestow good fortune, life, and energy upon people. (03-219-44)
ऊर्ध्वं तु षोडशाद्वर्षाद्ये भवन्ति ग्रहा नृणाम्। तानहं सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि नमस्कृत्य महेश्वरम् ॥०३-२१९-४५॥
ūrdhvaṃ tu ṣoḍaśādvarṣād ye bhavanti grahā nṛṇām। tān ahaṃ sampravakṣyāmi namaskṛtya maheśvaram ॥03-219-45॥
[ऊर्ध्वं (ūrdhvam) - after; above; तु (tu) - but; indeed; षोडशात् (ṣoḍaśāt) - from sixteen; वर्षात् (varṣāt) - from year; ये (ye) - which; who; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; arise; ग्रहाः (grahāḥ) - influences (planets); नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men; तान् (tān) - them; अहम् (aham) - I; सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि (sampravakṣyāmi) - will completely explain; नमस्कृत्य (namaskṛtya) - having bowed; महेश्वरम् (maheśvaram) - to Maheśvara (the great lord);]
(After but from sixteen from year which are influences (planets) of men, them I will completely explain, having bowed to Maheśvara.)
But after the sixteenth year, the planetary influences that affect men—those I will now fully explain, having bowed to Maheśvara (the Great Lord). (03-219-45)
यः पश्यति नरो देवाञ्जाग्रद्वा शयितोऽपि वा। उन्माद्यति स तु क्षिप्रं तं तु देवग्रहं विदुः ॥०३-२१९-४६॥
yaḥ paśyati naro devāñ jāgrad vā śayito'pi vā। unmādyati sa tu kṣipraṃ taṃ tu devagrahaṃ viduḥ ॥03-219-46॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees; नरः (naraḥ) - man; देवान् (devān) - the gods; जाग्रत् (jāgrat) - awake; वा (vā) - or; शयितः (śayitaḥ) - lying down; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; उन्माद्यति (unmādyati) - becomes deranged; सः (saḥ) - he; तु (tu) - indeed; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; तम् (tam) - him; तु (tu) - indeed; देवग्रहम् (devagraham) - deva-graha (grasp of a god); विदुः (viduḥ) - know;]
(Who sees the gods, whether awake or even lying down, quickly becomes deranged—him, indeed, they know as possessed by a deva-graha (grasp of a god).)
Whoever sees the gods, whether awake or even lying down, quickly becomes deranged—such a person is known as being possessed by a deva-graha (divine possession). (03-219-46)
आसीनश्च शयनश्च यः पश्यति नरः पितॄन्। उन्माद्यति स तु क्षिप्रं स ज्ञेयस्तु पितृग्रहः ॥०३-२१९-४७॥
āsīnaś ca śayanaś ca yaḥ paśyati naraḥ pitṝn। unmādyati sa tu kṣipraṃ sa jñeyas tu pitṛgrahaḥ ॥03-219-47॥
[आसीनः (āsīnaḥ) - sitting; च (ca) - and; शयानः (śayanaḥ) - lying (down); च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees; नरः (naraḥ) - man; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; उन्माद्यति (unmādyati) - becomes mad; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - indeed; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; स (sa) - he; ज्ञेयः (jñeyaḥ) - should be known; तु (tu) - indeed; पितृग्रहः (pitṛgrahaḥ) - possessed by ancestor spirit;]
(Sitting and lying, who sees man ancestors, becomes mad he indeed quickly, he should be known indeed as possessed by ancestor spirit.)
If a man, whether sitting or lying down, sees the ancestors and quickly becomes mad, he should indeed be recognized as possessed by an ancestral spirit. (03-219-47)
अवमन्यति यः सिद्धान्क्रुद्धाश्चापि शपन्ति यम्। उन्माद्यति स तु क्षिप्रं ज्ञेयः सिद्धग्रहस्तु सः ॥०३-२१९-४८॥
avamanyati yaḥ siddhān kruddhāś cāpi śapanti yam। unmādyati sa tu kṣipraṃ jñeyaḥ siddhagrahastu saḥ ॥03-219-48॥
[अवमन्यति (avamanyati) - despises; यः (yaḥ) - who; सिद्धान् (siddhān) - the perfected beings; क्रुद्धाः (kruddhāḥ) - angered ones; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शपन्ति (śapanti) - curse; यम् (yam) - whom; उन्माद्यति (unmādyati) - becomes insane; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - however; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; ज्ञेयः (jñeyaḥ) - should be known; सिद्धग्रहः (siddhagrihaḥ) - afflicted by a siddha spirit; तु (tu) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Who despises the perfected beings, and whom the angered ones also curse, he quickly becomes insane; he should be known as one afflicted by a siddha spirit.)
Whoever despises the siddhas and is cursed by the angered, quickly becomes mad; he should be recognized as possessed by a siddha spirit. (03-219-48)
उपाघ्राति च यो गन्धान्रसांश्चापि पृथग्विधान्। उन्माद्यति स तु क्षिप्रं स ज्ञेयो राक्षसो ग्रहः ॥०३-२१९-४९॥
upāghrāti ca yo gandhān rasāṃś cāpi pṛthag-vidhān। unmādyati sa tu kṣipraṃ sa jñeyo rākṣaso grahaḥ॥03-219-49॥
[उपाघ्राति (upāghrāti) - sniffs; smells; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; गन्धान् (gandhān) - scents; odors; रसान् (rasān) - tastes; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पृथग्विधान् (pṛthag-vidhān) - of various kinds; various; उन्माद्यति (unmādyati) - becomes mad; loses reason; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; स (sa) - he; ज्ञेयः (jñeyaḥ) - should be known; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - rākṣasa; demon; ग्रहः (grahaḥ) - afflicting spirit; possessing being;]
(He who sniffs scents and also tastes of various kinds and quickly becomes mad, he should be known as a Rākṣasa spirit.)
He who smells odors and also tastes things of various kinds, and quickly becomes mad, is to be recognized as possessed by a Rākṣasa spirit. (03-219-49)
गन्धर्वाश्चापि यं दिव्याः संस्पृशन्ति नरं भुवि। उन्माद्यति स तु क्षिप्रं ग्रहो गान्धर्व एव सः ॥०३-२१९-५०॥
gandharvāś cāpi yaṃ divyāḥ saṃspṛśanti naraṃ bhuvi। unmādyati sa tu kṣipraṃ graho gāndharva eva saḥ ॥03-219-50॥
[गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; (celestial beings); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; यं (yaṃ) - whom; दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine; संस्पृशन्ति (saṃspṛśanti) - touch; नरं (naraṃ) - man; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth; उन्माद्यति (unmādyati) - becomes mad; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; ग्रहः (grahaḥ) - afflicting spirit; गान्धर्व (gāndharva) - of the Gandharvas; एव (eva) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Gandharvas and also whom divine (beings) touch a man on the earth, becomes mad he but quickly, an afflicting spirit of the Gandharvas indeed he.)
If the divine Gandharvas also touch a man on earth, he quickly becomes mad; that is indeed an afflicting spirit of the Gandharvas. (03-219-50)
आविशन्ति च यं यक्षाः पुरुषं कालपर्यये। उन्माद्यति स तु क्षिप्रं ज्ञेयो यक्षग्रहस्तु सः ॥०३-२१९-५१॥
āviśanti ca yaṃ yakṣāḥ puruṣaṃ kālaparyaye. unmādyati sa tu kṣipraṃ jñeyo yakṣagrahastu saḥ ॥03-219-51॥
[आविशन्ति (āviśanti) - enter into; च (ca) - and; यं (yaṃ) - whom; यक्षाः (yakṣāḥ) - yakṣas (supernatural beings); पुरुषं (puruṣaṃ) - man; कालपर्यये (kālaparyaye) - at a change of time; उन्माद्यति (unmādyati) - becomes mad; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; ज्ञेयः (jñeyaḥ) - should be known; यक्षग्रहः (yakṣagrahaḥ) - seized by yakṣa; तु (tu) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(And whom yakṣas enter into at a change of time, he quickly becomes mad; he should be known indeed as one seized by a yakṣa.)
When yakṣas enter a man at a particular time, and he quickly becomes insane, he should be recognized as one possessed by a yakṣa. (03-219-51)
अधिरोहन्ति यं नित्यं पिशाचाः पुरुषं क्वचित्। उन्माद्यति स तु क्षिप्रं पैशाचं तं ग्रहं विदुः ॥०३-२१९-५२॥
adhirohanti yaṃ nityaṃ piśācāḥ puruṣaṃ kvacit. unmādyati sa tu kṣipraṃ paiśācaṃ taṃ grahaṃ viduḥ ॥03-219-52॥
[अधिरोहन्ति (adhirohanti) - ascend upon; यं (yaṃ) - whom; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; पिशाचाः (piśācāḥ) - piśācas (evil spirits); पुरुषं (puruṣam) - man; क्वचित् (kvacit) - sometimes; उन्माद्यति (unmādyati) - becomes mad; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; पैशाचं (paiśācam) - of piśāca (evil spirit); तं (taṃ) - that; ग्रहं (graham) - seizure; विदुः (viduḥ) - (they) know;]
(Piśācas always ascend upon whom, sometimes man; he becomes mad but quickly. That seizure of piśāca they know.)
They know as the seizure of a piśāca that condition in which piśācas always, at times, ascend upon a man, and he quickly becomes mad. (03-219-52)
यस्य दोषैः प्रकुपितं चित्तं मुह्यति देहिनः। उन्माद्यति स तु क्षिप्रं साधनं तस्य शास्त्रतः ॥०३-२१९-५३॥
yasya doṣaiḥ prakupitaṁ cittaṁ muhyati dehinaḥ. unmādyati sa tu kṣipraṁ sādhanaṁ tasya śāstrataḥ ॥03-219-53॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; दोषैः (doṣaiḥ) - by faults; प्रकुपितं (prakupitam) - agitated; चित्तं (cittam) - mind; मुह्यति (muhyati) - becomes deluded; देहिनः (dehinaḥ) - of the embodied; उन्माद्यति (unmādyati) - becomes insane; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; साधनं (sādhanam) - means (remedy); तस्य (tasya) - for him; शास्त्रतः (śāstrataḥ) - according to śāstra;]
(Of whom by faults agitated mind becomes deluded of the embodied, becomes insane he but quickly remedy for him according to śāstra.)
When the mind of a person is agitated by faults and becomes deluded, he becomes insane; but his remedy, according to the śāstra, should be applied quickly. (03-219-53)
वैक्लव्याच्च भयाच्चैव घोराणां चापि दर्शनात्। उन्माद्यति स तु क्षिप्रं सत्त्वं तस्य तु साधनम् ॥०३-२१९-५४॥
vaiklavyāc ca bhayāc caiva ghorāṇāṃ cāpi darśanāt। unmādyati sa tu kṣipraṃ sattvaṃ tasya tu sādhanam ॥03-219-54॥
[वैक्लव्यāt् (vaiklavyāt) - from despondency; च (ca) - and; भयāt् (bhayāt) - from fear; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; घोराणां (ghorāṇām) - of terrible (beings or things); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दर्शनात् (darśanāt) - from seeing; उन्माद्यति (unmādyati) - becomes mad; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; सत्त्वं (sattvaṃ) - strength of mind; तस्य (tasya) - his; तु (tu) - but; साधनम् (sādhanam) - means (of support);]
(From despondency and from fear indeed, and also from seeing terrible (things), he becomes mad quickly; strength of mind is but his means (of support).)
He quickly becomes mad from despondency and fear, and even from seeing terrifying things; but strength of mind is his means of support. (03-219-54)
कश्चित्क्रीडितुकामो वै भोक्तुकामस्तथापरः। अभिकामस्तथैवान्य इत्येष त्रिविधो ग्रहः ॥०३-२१९-५५॥
kaścit krīḍitukāmo vai bhoktukāmas tathāparaḥ। abhikāmas tathaivānya ity eṣa trividhō grahaḥ ॥03-219-55॥
[कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; क्रीडितुकामः (krīḍitukāmaḥ) - desirous of playing; वै (vai) - indeed; भोक्तुकामः (bhoktukāmaḥ) - desirous of enjoying; तथा (tathā) - likewise; परः (paraḥ) - another; अभिकामः (abhikāmaḥ) - desirous of approaching; तथा एव (tathā eva) - just so; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; इति (iti) - thus; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; त्रिविधः (trividhaḥ) - threefold; ग्रहः (grahaḥ) - grasping (nature);]
(Someone desirous of playing indeed, another desirous of enjoying likewise, one desirous of approaching just so another—thus this is the threefold grasping (nature).)
There is one who desires to play, another who desires to enjoy, and yet another who desires to approach—thus, this is the threefold nature of grasping. (03-219-55)
यावत्सप्ततिवर्षाणि भवन्त्येते ग्रहा नृणाम्। अतः परं देहिनां तु ग्रहतुल्यो भवेज्ज्वरः ॥०३-२१९-५६॥
yāvatsaptativarṣāṇi bhavantyete grahā nṛṇām। ataḥ paraṃ dehināṃ tu grahatulyo bhavej jvaraḥ॥03-219-56॥
