अजानतस्ते राधेय नाभ्यसूयाम्यहं वचः। जानासि त्वं जिताञ्शत्रून्गन्धर्वांस्तेजसा मया ॥०३-२३७-१॥
ajānataste rādheya nābhyasūyāmyahaṃ vacaḥ। jānāsi tvaṃ jitāñśatrūn gandharvāṃs tejasā mayā ॥03-237-1॥
[अजानतः (ajānataḥ) - not knowing; ते (te) - to you; राधेय (rādheya) - O son of Radha; न (na) - not; अभ्यसूयामि (abhyasūyāmi) - I find fault; अहम् (aham) - I; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; जानासि (jānāsi) - you know; त्वम् (tvam) - you; जितान् (jitān) - conquered; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - gandharvas; तेजसा (tejasā) - by power; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Not knowing, O son of Radha, I do not find fault with your words; you know, you have conquered the enemies, the gandharvas, by the power of me.)
O son of Radha, not knowing, I do not blame your words; you know that you have conquered enemies, the Gandharvas, by my power. (03-237-1)
आयोधितास्तु गन्धर्वाः सुचिरं सोदरैर्मम। मया सह महाबाहो कृतश्चोभयतः क्षयः ॥०३-२३७-२॥
āyodhitāstu gandharvāḥ suciraṃ sodaraiḥ mama। mayā saha mahābāho kṛtaścobhayataḥ kṣayaḥ॥03-237-2॥
[आयोधिताः (āyodhitāḥ) - fought against; तु (tu) - but; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the Gandharvas; सुचिरम् (suciram) - for a long time; सोदरैः (sodaraiḥ) - with brothers; मम (mama) - my; मया (mayā) - by me; सह (saha) - with; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; च (ca) - and; उभयतः (ubhayataḥ) - on both sides; क्षयः (kṣayaḥ) - destruction;]
(Fought against but the Gandharvas, for a long time, with my brothers. By me, together, O mighty-armed, and on both sides destruction was made.)
But the Gandharvas fought for a long time with my brothers; together with me, O mighty-armed one, destruction was wrought on both sides. (03-237-2)
मायाधिकास्त्वयुध्यन्त यदा शूरा वियद्गताः। तदा नो नसमं युद्धमभवत्सह खेचरैः ॥०३-२३७-३॥
māyādhikās tvayudhyanta yadā śūrā viyadgatāḥ। tadā no nasamaṃ yuddham abhavat saha khecaraiḥ॥03-237-3॥
[मायाधिकाः (māyādhikāḥ) - those with abundant magical powers; त्वयुध्यन्त (tvayudhyanta) - were fighting with you; यदा (yadā) - when; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; वियद्गताः (viyadgatāḥ) - gone to the sky; तदा (tadā) - then; नः (naḥ) - our; नसमम् (nasamam) - not equal; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; सह (saha) - with; खेचरैः (khecaraiḥ) - with the sky-dwellers; ॥०३-२३७-३॥ (॥03-237-3॥) -;]
(Those with abundant magical powers were fighting with you, when the heroes, gone to the sky. Then our battle with the sky-dwellers did not become equal.)
When those mighty magicians fought with you and the heroes went to the sky, at that time, our battle with the sky-dwellers was not equal. (03-237-3)
पराजयं च प्राप्ताः स्म रणे बन्धनमेव च। सभृत्यामात्यपुत्राश्च सदारधनवाहनाः ॥ उच्चैराकाशमार्गेण ह्रियामस्तैः सुदुःखिताः ॥०३-२३७-४॥
parājayaṃ ca prāptāḥ sma raṇe bandhanam eva ca। sabhṛtyāmātyaputrāś ca sadāradhanavāhanāḥ ॥ uccair ākāśamārgeṇa hriyāmas taiḥ suduḥkhitāḥ ॥03-237-4॥
[पराजयं (parājayam) - defeat; च (ca) - and; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - obtained; स्म (sma) - indeed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; बन्धनम् (bandhanam) - captivity; एव (eva) - just; च (ca) - and; सभृत्यामात्यपुत्राः (sabhṛtyāmātyaputrāḥ) - together with attendants, ministers, and sons; च (ca) - and; सदारधनवाहनाः (sadāradhanavāhanāḥ) - with wives, wealth, and vehicles; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - high; आकाशमार्गेण (ākāśamārgeṇa) - by the path of the sky; ह्रियामः (hriyāmaḥ) - we were carried away; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; सुदुःखिताः (suduḥkhitāḥ) - very afflicted;]
(Defeat and captivity indeed obtained in battle, together with attendants, ministers, and sons, and with wives, wealth, and vehicles, high by the sky-path we were carried away by them, very afflicted.)
We suffered defeat and captivity in battle, and, along with our attendants, ministers, sons, wives, wealth, and vehicles, we were carried high through the sky by them, greatly distressed. (03-237-4)
अथ नः सैनिकाः केचिदमात्याश्च महारथान्। उपगम्याब्रुवन्दीनाः पाण्डवाञ्शरणप्रदान् ॥०३-२३७-५॥
atha naḥ sainikāḥ kecid amātyāś ca mahārathān। upagamya ābruvan dīnāḥ pāṇḍavān śaraṇa-pradān॥03-237-5॥
[अथ (atha) - then; नः (naḥ) - our; सैनिकाः (sainikāḥ) - soldiers; केचित् (kecit) - some; अमात्याश्च (amātyāś ca) - and ministers; महारथान् (mahārathān) - great chariot-warriors; उपगम्य (upagamya) - approaching; आब्रुवन् (ābruvan) - they spoke; दीनाः (dīnāḥ) - distressed; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - to the Pāṇḍavas; शरणप्रदान् (śaraṇa-pradān) - granting refuge;]
(Then our soldiers, some and ministers, great chariot-warriors, approaching, they spoke, distressed, to the Pāṇḍavas, granting refuge.)
Then some of our soldiers and ministers, along with great chariot-warriors, approached the Pāṇḍavas in distress and requested them to grant refuge. (03-237-5)
एष दुर्योधनो राजा धार्तराष्ट्रः सहानुजः। सामात्यदारो ह्रियते गन्धर्वैर्दिवमास्थितैः ॥०३-२३७-६॥
eṣa duryodhanaḥ rājā dhārtarāṣṭraḥ sahānujaḥ। sāmātyadāro hriyate gandharvair divam āsthitaiḥ॥03-237-6॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; राजा (rājā) - king; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - son of Dhritarashtra; सहा-अनुजः (sahānujaḥ) - together with his younger brother; स-अमात्य-दारः (sāmātyadāraḥ) - together with ministers and wives; ह्रियते (hriyate) - is being taken; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by the Gandharvas; दिवम्-आस्थितैः (divam āsthitaiḥ) - who have taken their place in heaven;]
(This Duryodhana, the king, son of Dhritarashtra, together with his younger brother, together with ministers and wives, is being taken away by the Gandharvas who have occupied heaven.)
Here, Duryodhana the king, son of Dhritarashtra, along with his younger brother, ministers, and wives, is being carried off by the Gandharvas who dwell in heaven. (03-237-6)
तं मोक्षयत भद्रं वः सहदारं नराधिपम्। परामर्शो मा भविष्यत्कुरुदारेषु सर्वशः ॥०३-२३७-७॥
taṃ mokṣayata bhadraṃ vaḥ sahadāraṃ narādhipam। parāmarśo mā bhaviṣyat kurudāreṣu sarvaśaḥ ॥03-237-7॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; मोक्षयत (mokṣayata) - release; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - blessing; good; वः (vaḥ) - for you; सहदारं (sahadāraṃ) - with his wife; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - king; परामर्शः (parāmarśaḥ) - discussion; consultation; मा (mā) - do not; भविष्यत् (bhaviṣyat) - there should be; कुरुदारेषु (kurudāreṣu) - in the wives of the Kuru (family); सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way;]
(Him release, blessing for you, with his wife, the king. Discussion do not there should be, in the Kuru wives, in every way.)
Release him, the king, together with his wife, as a blessing for you. Let there be absolutely no discussion regarding the Kuru women. (03-237-7)
एवमुक्ते तु धर्मात्मा ज्येष्ठः पाण्डुसुतस्तदा। प्रसाद्य सोदरान्सर्वानाज्ञापयत मोक्षणे ॥०३-२३७-८॥
evam-ukte tu dharmātmā jyeṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍusutastadā। prasādya sodarān sarvān ājñāpayata mokṣaṇe ॥03-237-8॥
[एवमुक्ते (evam-ukte) - thus having been spoken; तु (tu) - but; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; पाण्डुसुतः (pāṇḍusutah) - son of Pāṇḍu; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having conciliated; सодарान् (sodaran) - his brothers; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; आज्ञापयत (ājñāpayata) - did instruct; मोक्षणे (mokṣaṇe) - for release;]
(Thus having been spoken, but the righteous-souled eldest son of Pāṇḍu then, having conciliated all his brothers, did instruct for release.)
After these words were spoken, the eldest son of Pāṇḍu, righteous of soul, then conciliated all his brothers and instructed them regarding release. (03-237-8)
अथागम्य तमुद्देशं पाण्डवाः पुरुषर्षभाः। सान्त्वपूर्वमयाचन्त शक्ताः सन्तो महारथाः ॥०३-२३७-९॥
athāgamya tamuddeśaṃ pāṇḍavāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ। sāntvapūrvamayācanta śaktāḥ santo mahārathāḥ॥03-237-9॥
[अथ (atha) - then; आगम्य (āgamya) - having arrived; तम् (tam) - that; उद्देशम् (uddeśam) - place; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; सान्त्वपूर्वम् (sāntvapūrvam) - with prior conciliation; अयाचन्त (ayācanta) - requested; शक्ताः (śaktāḥ) - capable; सन्तः (santaḥ) - virtuous; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great warriors;]
(Then, having arrived at that place, the Pāṇḍavas, bulls among men, with prior conciliation, requested, capable, virtuous, great warriors.)
Then the Pāṇḍavas, foremost among men and mighty warriors, having arrived at that place, made their request with prior conciliation as virtuous and capable heroes. (03-237-9)
यदा चास्मान्न मुमुचुर्गन्धर्वाः सान्त्विता अपि। ततोऽर्जुनश्च भीमश्च यमजौ च बलोत्कटौ ॥ मुमुचुः शरवर्षाणि गन्धर्वान्प्रत्यनेकशः ॥०३-२३७-१०॥
yadā cāsmānna mumucur gandharvāḥ sāntvitā api। tato'rjunaś ca bhīmaś ca yamajau ca balotkaṭau॥ mumucuḥ śaravarṣāṇi gandharvānpraty anekaśaḥ॥03-237-10॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; च (ca) - and; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from us; न (na) - not; मुमुचुः (mumucuḥ) - released; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the Gandharvas; सान्त्विताः (sāntvitāḥ) - appeased; अपि (api) - even; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; च (ca) - and; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; च (ca) - and; यमजौ (yamajau) - the sons of Yama; च (ca) - and; बलोत्कटौ (balotkaṭau) - mighty ones; मुमुचुः (mumucuḥ) - released; शरवर्षाणि (śaravarṣāṇi) - showers of arrows; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - on the Gandharvas; प्रति (prati) - towards; अनेकशः (anekaśaḥ) - manifoldly;]
(When indeed the Gandharvas, though appeased, did not release us, then Arjuna and Bhīma and the two mighty sons of Yama released showers of arrows manifoldly towards the Gandharvas.)
When the Gandharvas, even though they had been appeased, did not set us free, then Arjuna, Bhīma, and the two powerful sons of Yama showered arrows again and again upon the Gandharvas. (03-237-10)
अथ सर्वे रणं मुक्त्वा प्रयाताः खचरा दिवम्। अस्मानेवाभिकर्षन्तो दीनान्मुदितमानसाः ॥०३-२३७-११॥
atha sarve raṇaṃ muktvā prayātāḥ khacarā divam। asmān evābhikarṣanto dīnān muditamānasāḥ ॥03-237-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; रणम् (raṇam) - battle; मुक्त्वा (muktvā) - having left; प्रयाताः (prayātāḥ) - departed; खचराः (khacarāḥ) - sky-goers; दिवम् (divam) - to the heaven; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; एव (eva) - just; अभिकर्षन्तः (abhikarṣantaḥ) - drawing towards; दीनान् (dīnān) - distressed; मुदितमानसाः (muditamānasāḥ) - having joyous minds;]
(Then all (the) sky-goers, having left the battle, departed to heaven, drawing just us distressed, having joyous minds.)
Then all the celestial beings, after leaving the battle, departed to heaven, joyfully drawing us, who were distressed, towards them. (03-237-11)
ततः समन्तात्पश्यामि शरजालेन वेष्टितम्। अमानुषाणि चास्त्राणि प्रयुञ्जानं धनञ्जयम् ॥०३-२३७-१२॥
tataḥ samantāt paśyāmi śarajālena veṣṭitam। amānuṣāṇi ca astrāṇi prayuñjānaṃ dhanañjayam॥03-237-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; समन्तात् (samantāt) - on all sides; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; शरजालेन (śarajālena) - by a net of arrows; वेष्टितम् (veṣṭitam) - enveloped; अमानुषाणि (amānuṣāṇi) - non-human; च (ca) - and; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; प्रयुञ्जानम् (prayuñjānam) - using; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhananjaya;]
(Then, on all sides, I see Dhananjaya enveloped by a net of arrows, using non-human weapons.)
Then I see Dhananjaya, surrounded on all sides by a net of arrows, deploying non-human weapons. (03-237-12)
समावृता दिशो दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवेन शितैः शरैः। धनञ्जयसखात्मानं दर्शयामास वै तदा ॥०३-२३७-१३॥
samāvṛtā diśo dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavena śitaiḥ śaraiḥ। dhanañjaya-sakhā ātmānam darśayām āsa vai tadā॥03-237-13॥
[समावृता (samāvṛtā) - enveloped; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पाण्डवेन (pāṇḍavena) - by the Pāṇḍava; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - sharp; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - by arrows; धनञ्जयसखा (dhanañjaya-sakhā) - the friend of Dhanañjaya; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; दर्शयामास (darśayām āsa) - caused to be shown; वै (vai) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having seen the directions enveloped by sharp arrows by the Pāṇḍava, the friend of Dhanañjaya indeed then caused himself to be shown.)
When he saw the directions enveloped by the sharp arrows of the Pāṇḍava, the friend of Dhanañjaya then indeed revealed himself. (03-237-13)
चित्रसेनः पाण्डवेन समाश्लिष्य परन्तपः। कुशलं परिपप्रच्छ तैः पृष्टश्चाप्यनामयम् ॥०३-२३७-१४॥
citraseṇaḥ pāṇḍavena samāśliṣya parantapaḥ। kuśalaṁ paripapraccha taiḥ pṛṣṭaś cāpy anāmayam॥03-237-14॥
[चित्रसेनः (citraseṇaḥ) - Citraseṇa; (proper noun); पाण्डवेन (pāṇḍavena) - by the Pāṇḍava; (instrumental singular); समाश्लिष्य (samāśliṣya) - having embraced; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes; (epithet); कुशलं (kuśalam) - welfare; परिपप्रच्छ (paripapraccha) - enquired thoroughly; (he asked); तैः (taiḥ) - by them; (instrumental plural); पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - being asked; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - well-being; (absence of ailment);]
(Citraseṇa, having embraced by the Pāṇḍava, the scorcher of foes, welfare thoroughly enquired; by them being asked also well-being.)
Citraseṇa, embraced by the Pāṇḍava, the tormentor of foes, thoroughly enquired about his welfare, and having been asked by them, also enquired after their well-being. (03-237-14)
ते समेत्य तथान्योन्यं संनाहान्विप्रमुच्य च। एकीभूतास्ततो वीरा गन्धर्वाः सह पाण्डवैः ॥ अपूजयेतामन्योन्यं चित्रसेनधनञ्जयौ ॥०३-२३७-१५॥
te sametya tathānyonyaṃ saṃnāhān vipramucya ca. ekībhūtās tato vīrā gandharvāḥ saha pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥ apūjayetām anyonyaṃ citrasena-dhanañjayau ॥03-237-15॥
[ते (te) - they; समेत्य (sametya) - having met; तथा (tathā) - thus; अन्योन्यं (anyonyam) - one another; सन्नाहान् (saṃnāhān) - armor; विप्रमुच्य (vipramucya) - having removed; च (ca) - and; एकीभूताः (ekībhūtāḥ) - becoming united; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; सह (saha) - with; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; अपूजयेताम् (apūjayetām) - both honored; अन्योन्यं (anyonyam) - each other; चित्रसेनधनञ्जयौ (citrasena-dhanañjayau) - Citraseṇa and Dhanañjaya;]
(They, having met thus, having also removed their armor from each other, then the heroes became united, the Gandharvas with the Pāṇḍavas. Citraseṇa and Dhanañjaya both honored each other.)
Having met, they removed their armor and, united, the heroes—the Gandharvas and the Pāṇḍavas—stood together. Citraseṇa and Dhanañjaya paid mutual honor to each other. (03-237-15)
