चित्रसेनं समागम्य प्रहसन्नर्जुनस्तदा। इदं वचनमक्लीबमब्रवीत्परवीरहा ॥०३-२३८-१॥
citrasenaṃ samāgamya prahasannarjunastadā। idaṃ vacanamaklībamabravītparavīrahā ॥03-238-1॥
[चित्रसेनं (citrasenam) - Citrasena (proper noun, accusative singular); समागम्य (samāgamya) - having approached; having met; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna (proper noun, nominative singular); तदा (tadā) - then; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अक्लीबम् (aklībam) - not unmanly; manly; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes;]
(Having approached Citrasena, smiling, Arjuna then this speech manly spoke, destroyer of enemy heroes.)
Then Arjuna, destroyer of enemy heroes, smiling, after approaching Citrasena, spoke these manly words. (03-238-1)
भ्रातॄनर्हसि नो वीर मोक्तुं गन्धर्वसत्तम। अनर्हा धर्षणं हीमे जीवमानेषु पाण्डुषु ॥०३-२३८-२॥
bhrātṝn arhasi no vīra moktuṃ gandharva-sattama। anarhā dharṣaṇaṃ hīme jīvamāneṣu pāṇḍuṣu ॥03-238-2॥
[भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers (accusative plural); अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought (second person singular, desiderative/potential); नो (no) - for us; वीर (vīra) - hero; मोक्तुं (moktuṃ) - to release; गन्धर्वसत्तम (gandharva-sattama) - O best of Gandharvas; अनर्हाः (anarhāḥ) - not worthy (feminine plural); धर्षणम् (dharṣaṇam) - violation; हि (hi) - indeed; इमे (ime) - these (feminine plural); जीवमानेषु (jīvamāneṣu) - while (they are) living; पाण्डुषु (pāṇḍuṣu) - in the Pāṇḍavas (locative plural);]
(O hero, you ought to release our brothers, O best of Gandharvas; for these (women) are not worthy of violation indeed while the Pāṇḍavas are living.)
O best of Gandharvas, you ought to release our brothers, O hero; for these women are truly not fit to be violated while the Pāṇḍavas are alive. (03-238-2)
एवमुक्तस्तु गन्धर्वः पाण्डवेन महात्मना। उवाच यत्कर्ण वयं मन्त्रयन्तो विनिर्गताः ॥ द्रष्टारः स्म सुखाद्धीनान्सदारान्पाण्डवानिति ॥०३-२३८-३॥
evam-uktas tu gandharvaḥ pāṇḍavena mahātmanā। uvāca yat karṇa vayaṃ mantrayanto vinirgatāḥ॥ draṣṭāraḥ sma sukhād dhīnān sadārān pāṇḍavān iti॥ 03-238-3॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; तु (tu) - but; गन्धर्वः (gandharvaḥ) - the Gandharva; पाण्डवेन (pāṇḍavena) - by the Pāṇḍava; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; उवाच (uvāca) - said; यत् (yat) - that; कर्ण (karṇa) - O Karṇa; वयम् (vayam) - we; मन्त्रयन्तः (mantrayantaḥ) - having consulted; विनिर्गताः (vinirgatāḥ) - departed; द्रष्टारः (draṣṭāraḥ) - seers; स्म (sma) - were; सुखात् (sukhāt) - from happiness; हीनान् (hīnān) - deprived; सदारान् (sadārān) - with their wives; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Thus addressed, the Gandharva, by the great-souled Pāṇḍava, said, "O Karṇa, that we, having consulted, departed, (was to) behold the Pāṇḍavas with their wives, deprived of happiness, thus." (03-238-3))
Thus, when addressed, the Gandharva, by the great-souled Pāṇḍava, said: "O Karṇa, it was after conferring together that we departed—to see the Pāṇḍavas, along with their wives, deprived of happiness." (03-238-3)
तस्मिन्नुच्चार्यमाणे तु गन्धर्वेण वचस्यथ। भूमेर्विवरमन्वैच्छं प्रवेष्टुं व्रीडयान्वितः ॥०३-२३८-४॥
tasminn uccāryamāṇe tu gandharveṇa vacasya tha। bhūmer vivaram anvaiṣaṁ praveṣṭuṁ vrīḍayānvitaḥ॥03-238-4॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; उच्चार्यमाणे (uccāryamāṇe) - being spoken; तु (tu) - but; गन्धर्वेण (gandharveṇa) - by the Gandharva; वचस्यथ (vacasya tha) - of the words, then; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of the earth; विवरम् (vivaram) - opening; अन्वैच्छम् (anvaiṣam) - I sought; प्रवेष्टुम् (praveṣṭum) - to enter; व्रीडया (vrīḍayā) - with shame; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - possessed;]
(In that being spoken, but, by the Gandharva, of the words, then; of the earth, an opening I sought to enter, with shame possessed.)
But while those words were being uttered by the Gandharva, I, possessed with shame, wanted to find an opening in the earth to enter. (03-238-4)
युधिष्ठिरमथागम्य गन्धर्वाः सह पाण्डवैः। अस्मद्दुर्मन्त्रितं तस्मै बद्धांश्चास्मान्न्यवेदयन् ॥०३-२३८-५॥
yudhiṣṭhiram athāgamya gandharvāḥ saha pāṇḍavaiḥ । asmaddurmantritaṃ tasmai baddhāṃś cāsmān nyavedayan ॥03-238-5॥
[युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - to Yudhishthira; अथ (atha) - then; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the Gandharvas; सह (saha) - with; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; अस्मत्-दुर्मन्त्रितम् (asmat-durmantritam) - our ill-advised act; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; बद्धान् (baddhān) - bound; च (ca) - and; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; न्यवेदयन् (nyavedayan) - they made known;]
(To Yudhishthira, then having come, the Gandharvas with the Pāṇḍavas our ill-advised act to him bound and us they made known.)
Then, having come to Yudhishthira along with the Pāṇḍavas, the Gandharvas informed him of our ill-advised deed and that we had been bound. (03-238-5)
स्त्रीसमक्षमहं दीनो बद्धः शत्रुवशं गतः। युधिष्ठिरस्योपहृतः किं नु दुःखमतः परम् ॥०३-२३८-६॥
strīsamakṣamahaṃ dīno baddhaḥ śatruvaśaṃ gataḥ। yudhiṣṭhirasyopahṛtaḥ kiṃ nu duḥkhamataḥ param ॥03-238-6॥
[स्त्रीसमक्ष (strī-samakṣa) - in the presence of a woman; अहम् (aham) - I; दीनः (dīnaḥ) - afflicted; बद्धः (baddhaḥ) - bound; शत्रुवशं (śatru-vaśam) - under the power of the enemy; गतः (gataḥ) - have gone; युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhishthira; उपहृतः (upahṛtaḥ) - taken away; किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - pain; अतः (ataḥ) - than this; परम् (param) - greater;]
(In the presence of a woman, I, afflicted, bound, have gone under the power of the enemy, of Yudhishthira taken away; what indeed pain than this greater?)
I, afflicted and bound, have been taken away in the presence of a woman and come under the power of the enemy—what pain could be greater than this for Yudhishthira? (03-238-6)
ये मे निराकृता नित्यं रिपुर्येषामहं सदा। तैर्मोक्षितोऽहं दुर्बुद्धिर्दत्तं तैर्जीवितं च मे ॥०३-२३८-७॥
ye me nirākṛtā nityaṃ ripur yeṣām ahaṃ sadā। tair mokṣito'haṃ durbuddhir dattaṃ tair jīvitaṃ ca me ॥03-238-7॥
[ये (ye) - who; मे (me) - to me; निराकृता (nirākṛtāḥ) - have removed; नित्यं (nityam) - always; रिपुः (ripuḥ) - enemy; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; अहम् (aham) - I; सदा (sadā) - always; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; मोक्षितः (mokṣitaḥ) - have been freed; अहम् (aham) - I; दुर्बुद्धिः (durbuddhiḥ) - with dull intellect; दत्तं (dattaṃ) - has been given; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; जीवितं (jīvitam) - life; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me;]
(Who to me always have removed the enemy, of whom I always, by them I, the dull-minded, have been freed; by them life has been given to me also.)
Those who have always removed my enemy, by whom I have always been freed—even I, dull-minded—by them my life too has been given. (03-238-7)
प्राप्तः स्यां यद्यहं वीर वधं तस्मिन्महारणे। श्रेयस्तद्भविता मह्यमेवम्भूतं न जीवितम् ॥०३-२३८-८॥
prāptaḥ syāṃ yadyahaṃ vīra vadhaṃ tasminmahāraṇe। śreyastadbhavitā mahyamevaṃbhūtaṃ na jīvitam ॥03-238-8॥
[प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; achieved; स्याम् (syām) - I would be; I might be; यदि (yadi) - if; अहम् (aham) - I; वीर (vīra) - hero; brave one; वधम् (vadham) - slaying; killing; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; महारणे (mahāraṇe) - great battle; श्रेयर् (śreyas) - better; superior; तत् (tat) - that; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; मम (mama) - for me; एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; भूतम् (bhūtam) - been; being (such); न (na) - not; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
(Attained I might be if I, O hero, slaying in that great battle; better that will be for me such being, not life.)
If I were to attain death, O hero, being slain in that great battle, that would be better for me than living in such a condition. (03-238-8)
भवेद्यशः पृथिव्यां मे ख्यातं गन्धर्वतो वधात्। प्राप्ताश्च लोकाः पुण्याः स्युर्महेन्द्रसदनेऽक्षयाः ॥०३-२३८-९॥
bhaved yaśaḥ pṛthivyāṃ me khyātaṃ gandharvato vadhāt। prāptāś ca lokāḥ puṇyāḥ syur mahendrasadane'kṣayāḥ॥03-238-9॥
[भवेत् (bhavet) - may there be; let it be; may become; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; renown; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyām) - on earth; मे (me) - my; to me; ख्यातं (khyātaṃ) - known; celebrated; गन्धर्वतः (gandharvataḥ) - from the gandharva; by the gandharva; वधात् (vadhāt) - from the killing; from the slaying; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - obtained; attained; च (ca) - and; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; celestial realms; पुण्याः (puṇyāḥ) - meritorious; virtuous; स्युः (syuḥ) - may be; may become; महेन्द्रसदने (mahendrasadane) - in the palace of Mahendra (Indra); अक्षयाः (akṣayāḥ) - imperishable; undecaying; eternal;]
(May there be fame on earth for me, known from the slaying of the gandharva. And the meritorious worlds attained may be imperishable in Indra's palace.)
May I gain fame on earth, celebrated for having slain the gandharva; and may the virtuous worlds I attain be eternal in the palace of Mahendra (Indra). (03-238-9)
यत्त्वद्य मे व्यवसितं तच्छृणुध्वं नरर्षभाः। इह प्रायमुपासिष्ये यूयं व्रजत वै गृहान् ॥ भ्रातरश्चैव मे सर्वे प्रयान्त्वद्य पुरं प्रति ॥०३-२३८-१०॥
yat tv adya me vyavasitaṁ tac chṛṇudhvaṁ naraṛṣabhāḥ। iha prāyam upāsiṣye yūyaṁ vrajata vai gṛhān ॥ bhrātaraś caiva me sarve prayāntv adya puraṁ prati ॥03-238-10॥
[यत् (yat) - which; त्व् (tv) - indeed; अद्य (adya) - today; मे (me) - my; व्यवसितं (vyavasitam) - resolution; तत् (tat) - that; शृणुध्वं (śṛṇudhvaṁ) - hear (you all); नरर्षभाः (naraṛṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; इह (iha) - here; प्रायम् (prāyam) - the act of fasting unto death; उपासिष्ये (upāsiṣye) - I shall observe; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (plural); व्रजत (vrajata) - go; वै (vai) - indeed; गृहान् (gṛhān) - to your homes; भ्रातरश् (bhrātaraś) - brothers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मे (me) - my; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रयान्तु (prayāntu) - let them go; अद्य (adya) - today; पुरं (puraṁ) - to the city; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Which indeed today my resolution, that hear you all, bulls among men. Here the act of fasting unto death I shall observe; you go indeed to your homes. Brothers and indeed my all, let them go today towards the city.)
Hear today what I have resolved, O bulls among men. Here I shall observe the vow of fasting unto death; you all go home. As for my brothers, let all of them also go today towards the city. (03-238-10)
कर्णप्रभृतयश्चैव सुहृदो बान्धवाश्च ये। दुःशासनं पुरस्कृत्य प्रयान्त्वद्य पुरं प्रति ॥०३-२३८-११॥
karṇaprabṛtayashcaiva suhṛdo bāndhavāśca ye। duḥśāsanaṃ puraskṛtya prayāntvadya puraṃ prati ॥03-238-11॥
[कर्णप्रभृतयः (karṇaprabṛtayaḥ) - Karna and others; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - kinsmen; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; दुःशासनम् (duḥśāsanam) - Dushasana; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - placing at the front; प्रयान्तु (prayāntu) - let them go; अद्य (adya) - today; पुरम् (puram) - to the city; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Karna and others indeed, friends, kinsmen and who, Dushasana having placed at the front, let them go today towards the city.)
Let Karna and the others, as well as the friends and kinsmen who are here, proceed towards the city today with Dushasana at the forefront. (03-238-11)
न ह्यहं प्रतियास्यामि पुरं शत्रुनिराकृतः। शत्रुमानापहो भूत्वा सुहृदां मानकृत्तथा ॥०३-२३८-१२॥
na hyahaṃ pratiyāsyāmi puraṃ śatrunirākṛtaḥ। śatrumānāpaho bhūtvā suhṛdāṃ mānakṛttathā ॥03-238-12॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रत्यास्यामि (pratiyāsyāmi) - shall return; पुरम् (puram) - to the city; शत्रु-निराकृतः (śatru-nirākṛtaḥ) - having expelled the enemy; शत्रु-मान-अपहः (śatru-māna-apahaḥ) - remover of enemy's pride; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; मान-कृत्तथा (māna-kṛt tathā) - likewise accomplisher of honor;]
(Not indeed I shall return to the city having expelled the enemy; having become the remover of the enemy's pride, likewise accomplisher of honor of friends.)
I will certainly not return to the city after driving out the enemy unless, having become one who diminishes the pride of enemies, I am also one who brings honor to friends. (03-238-12)
स सुहृच्छोकदो भूत्वा शत्रूणां हर्षवर्धनः। वारणाह्वयमासाद्य किं वक्ष्यामि जनाधिपम् ॥०३-२३८-१३॥
sa suhṛcchokado bhūtvā śatrūṇāṃ harṣavardhanaḥ। vāraṇāhvayam āsādya kiṃ vakṣyāmi janādhipam ॥03-238-13॥
[स (sa) - he; सुहृत्-शोकदः (suhṛc-chokadaḥ) - giver of grief to friends; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; शत्रूणाम् (śatrūṇām) - of enemies; हर्ष-वर्धनः (harṣa-vardhanaḥ) - increaser of joy; वारण-अह्वयम् (vāraṇa-ahvayam) - Vāraṇāhvaya (elephant-named, i.e., Hastināpura); आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; किम् (kim) - what; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - shall I say; जन-अधिपम् (jana-adhipam) - the lord of men;]
(He, having become a giver of grief to friends, increaser of joy of enemies, having approached Vāraṇāhvaya, what shall I say to the lord of men?)
He, having caused grief to his friends and increased the joy of his enemies, upon reaching Vāraṇāhvaya, what shall I say to the lord of men? (03-238-13)
भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपो द्रौणिर्विदुरः सञ्जयस्तथा। बाह्लीकः सोमदत्तश्च ये चान्ये वृद्धसंमताः ॥०३-२३८-१४॥
bhīṣmo droṇaḥ kṛpo drauṇir viduraḥ sañjayas tathā। bāhlīkaḥ somadattaś ca ye cānye vṛddhasaṁmatāḥ ॥03-238-14॥
[भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kripa; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - the son of Drona; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) - Sanjaya; तथा (tathā) - also; बाह्लीकः (bāhlīkaḥ) - Bahlika; सोमदत्तः (somadattaḥ) - Somadatta; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - those; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; वृद्धसंमताः (vṛddhasaṁmatāḥ) - honored by elders;]
(Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, the son of Drona, Vidura, Sanjaya also, Bahlika, Somadatta and, and those others honored by elders.)
Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Asvatthama (the son of Drona), Vidura, Sanjaya, Bahlika, Somadatta, and all those others respected by elders. (03-238-14)
ब्राह्मणाः श्रेणिमुख्याश्च तथोदासीनवृत्तयः। किं मां वक्ष्यन्ति किं चापि प्रतिवक्ष्यामि तानहम् ॥०३-२३८-१५॥
brāhmaṇāḥ śreṇimukhyāś ca tathodāsīnavṛttayaḥ। kiṃ māṃ vakṣyanti kiṃ cāpi prativakṣyāmi tān aham॥03-238-15॥
[ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; श्रेणिमुख्याः (śreṇimukhyāḥ) - guild-leaders; च (ca) - and; तथोदासीनवृत्तयः (tathodāsīnavṛttayaḥ) - also those who have indifferent conduct; किं (kiṃ) - what; माम् (mām) - me; वक्ष्यन्ति (vakṣyanti) - will say; किं (kiṃ) - what; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रतिवक्ष्यामि (prativakṣyāmi) - will I reply; तान् (tān) - to them; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Brāhmaṇas; guild-leaders; and also those who have indifferent conduct; what me will say; what and also will I reply to them; I.)
What will the Brāhmaṇas, guild-leaders, and those who act indifferently say to me, and what shall I reply to them? (03-238-15)
रिपूणां शिरसि स्थित्वा तथा विक्रम्य चोरसि। आत्मदोषात्परिभ्रष्टः कथं वक्ष्यामि तानहम् ॥०३-२३८-१६॥
ripūṇāṃ śirasi sthitvā tathā vikramya ca urasi. ātma-doṣāt paribhraṣṭaḥ kathaṃ vakṣyāmi tān aham ॥03-238-16॥
[रिपूणां (ripūṇām) - of enemies; शिरसि (śirasi) - on (their) head; स्थित्वा (sthitvā) - having stood; तथा (tathā) - thus; विक्रम्य (vikramya) - having advanced; च (ca) - and; उरसि (urasi) - on (their) chest; आत्मदोषात् (ātma-doṣāt) - due to my own fault; परिभ्रष्टः (paribhraṣṭaḥ) - fallen; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - shall I tell; तान् (tān) - them; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Having stood on the enemies' head, thus having advanced also on (their) chest, fallen due to my own fault, how shall I tell them I?)
Having stood triumphant upon the heads of my enemies and having advanced upon their very chests, now fallen because of my own fault, how can I face them? (03-238-16)
दुर्विनीताः श्रियं प्राप्य विद्यामैश्वर्यमेव च। तिष्ठन्ति न चिरं भद्रे यथाहं मदगर्वितः ॥०३-२३८-१७॥
durvinītāḥ śriyaṃ prāpya vidyāmaiśvaryam eva ca। tiṣṭhanti na ciraṃ bhadre yathāhaṃ madagarvitaḥ॥03-238-17॥
[दुर्विनीताः (durvinītāḥ) - ill-disciplined; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; ऐश्वर्यम् (aiśvaryam) - sovereignty; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; तिष्ठन्ति (tiṣṭhanti) - they remain; न (na) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - for long; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; यथा (yathā) - just as; अहम् (aham) - I; मदगर्वितः (madagarvitaḥ) - puffed up with pride;]
(Ill-disciplined, having obtained prosperity, knowledge, and sovereignty indeed and, they do not remain for long, O auspicious one, just as I, puffed up with pride.)
O blessed one, the ill-disciplined, having attained prosperity, knowledge, and dominion, do not long remain—just as I, puffed up with pride, did not. (03-238-17)
अहो बत यथेदं मे कष्टं दुश्चरितं कृतम्। स्वयं दुर्बुद्धिना मोहाद्येन प्राप्तोऽस्मि संशयम् ॥०३-२३८-१८॥
aho bata yathedaṃ me kaṣṭaṃ duścaritaṃ kṛtam। svayaṃ durbuddhinā mohādyena prāpto'smi saṃśayam ॥03-238-18॥
[अहो (aho) - alas; बत (bata) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - how; इदं (idaṃ) - this; मे (me) - by me; कष्टं (kaṣṭaṃ) - hard; दुश्चरितं (duścaritaṃ) - bad deed; कृतम् (kṛtam) - has been done; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; दुर्बुद्धिना (durbuddhinā) - with bad intellect; मोहात् (mohāt) - out of delusion; येन (yena) - by which; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; संशयम् (saṃśayam) - doubt;]
(Alas indeed, how this by me hard bad deed has been done; myself with bad intellect out of delusion by which I have attained doubt.)
Alas, indeed, how have I committed this difficult misdeed by my own bad understanding and delusion, by which I have come to doubt. (03-238-18)
तस्मात्प्रायमुपासिष्ये न हि शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम्। चेतयानो हि को जीवेत्कृच्छ्राच्छत्रुभिरुद्धृतः ॥०३-२३८-१९॥
tasmāt prāyam upāsiṣye na hi śakṣyāmi jīvitum। cetayānaḥ hi kaḥ jīvet kṛcchrāt śatrubhiḥ uddhṛtaḥ॥03-238-19॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; प्रायम् (prāyam) - fast unto death; उपासिष्ये (upāsiṣye) - I shall undertake; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्ष्यामि (śakṣyāmi) - I shall be able; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; चेतयाः (cetayānaḥ) - regaining consciousness; हि (hi) - indeed; कः (kaḥ) - who; जीवेत् (jīvet) - would live; कृच्छ्रात् (kṛcchrāt) - from hardship; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - by enemies; उद्धृतः (uddhṛtaḥ) - rescued;]
(Therefore, fast unto death I shall undertake, not indeed I shall be able to live. Regaining consciousness, indeed who would live, rescued from hardship by enemies?)
Therefore, I shall undertake a fast unto death, for I truly am not able to go on living. For after regaining consciousness, who would survive after being rescued from hardship by enemies? (03-238-19)
शत्रुभिश्चावहसितो मानी पौरुषवर्जितः। पाण्डवैर्विक्रमाढ्यैश्च सावमानमवेक्षितः ॥०३-२३८-२०॥
śatrubhiś cāvahasito mānī pauruṣavarjitaḥ। pāṇḍavair vikramāḍhyaiś ca sāvamānam avekṣitaḥ ॥03-238-20॥
[शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - by enemies; च (ca) - and; अवहसितः (avahasitaḥ) - laughed at; मानी (mānī) - proud; पौरुष-वर्जितः (pauruṣa-varjitaḥ) - devoid of manliness; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; विक्रम-आढ्यैः (vikrama-āḍhyaiḥ) - abounding in prowess; च (ca) - and; सावमानम् (sāvamānam) - with disrespect; अवेक्षितः (avekṣitaḥ) - regarded;]
(By enemies and laughed at, proud, devoid of manliness; by the Pāṇḍavas abounding in prowess and with disrespect regarded.)
He, being proud and devoid of manliness, was laughed at by his enemies and regarded with disrespect by the valorous Pāṇḍavas. (03-238-20)

(Thus, overcome by worry, to Duḥśāsana then spoke: Duḥśāsana, listen to this speech of mine, O Bhārata.)
Thus, overcome by anxiety, he then spoke to Duḥśāsana: "Duḥśāsana, listen to these words of mine, O Bhārata." (03-238-21)
प्रतीच्छ त्वं मया दत्तमभिषेकं नृपो भव। प्रशाधि पृथिवीं स्फीतां कर्णसौबलपालिताम् ॥०३-२३८-२२॥
pratīccha tvaṁ mayā dattam abhiṣekaṁ nṛpo bhava। praśādhi pṛthivīṁ sphītāṁ karṇasaubala-pālitām ॥03-238-22॥
[प्रतीच्छ (pratīccha) - accept; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; मया (mayā) - by me; दत्तम् (dattam) - given; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekam) - anointing; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; भव (bhava) - be; प्रशाधि (praśādhi) - govern; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīm) - earth; स्फीताम् (sphītām) - prosperous; कर्णसौबलपालिताम् (karṇasaubala-pālitām) - protected by Karṇa and Śaubala;]
(Accept you by me given anointing; be king; govern the earth, prosperous, protected by Karṇa and Śaubala.)
Accept the anointing given by me; become the king; rule the prosperous earth protected by Karṇa and Śaubala. (03-238-22)
भ्रातॄन्पालय विस्रब्धं मरुतो वृत्रहा यथा। बान्धवास्त्वोपजीवन्तु देवा इव शतक्रतुम् ॥०३-२३८-२३॥
bhrātṝn pālaya visrabdhaṃ maruto vṛtrahā yathā। bāndhavās tv upajīvantu devā iva śatakratum ॥03-238-23॥
[भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers (accusative plural); पालय (pālaya) - protect; विस्रब्धं (visrabdhaṃ) - confidently; मरुतः (marutaḥ) - the Maruts; वृत्रहा (vṛtrahā) - Vṛtrahan; (slayer of Vṛtra; epithet of Indra); यथा (yathā) - as; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relations; त्व (tv) - your; (enclitic form); उपजीवन्तु (upajīvantu) - may they live upon; may they subsist on; (optative third person plural); देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; इव (iva) - like; as; शतक्रतुम् (śatakratum) - Śatakratu; (Indra; one of a hundred acts);]
(Protect brothers confidently as the Maruts (are protected by) Vṛtrahan; as your relations may subsist on you like the gods on Śatakratu.)
Confidently protect your brothers as Vṛtrahan protects the Maruts; let your relatives live upon you as the gods do upon Śatakratu (Indra). (03-238-23)
ब्राह्मणेषु सदा वृत्तिं कुर्वीथाश्चाप्रमादतः। बन्धूनां सुहृदां चैव भवेथास्त्वं गतिः सदा ॥०३-२३८-२४॥
brāhmaṇeṣu sadā vṛttiṃ kurvīthāś cāpramādataḥ। bandhūnāṃ suhṛdāṃ caiva bhavethās tvaṃ gatiḥ sadā॥03-238-24॥
[ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - in (regard to) Brāhmaṇas; सदा (sadā) - always; वृत्तिं (vṛttiṃ) - conduct; कुर्वीथाः (kurvīthāḥ) - (you should) perform; च (ca) - and; अप्रमादतः (apramādataḥ) - without carelessness; बन्धूनाम् (bandhūnām) - of relatives; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भवेथाः (bhavethāḥ) - (you should) become; त्वम् (tvam) - you; गतिः (gatiḥ) - the refuge; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(In (regard to) Brāhmaṇas always conduct (you should) perform and without carelessness; of relatives, of friends and indeed (you should) become you the refuge always.)
You should always act properly towards Brāhmaṇas without any negligence; and you should always be the refuge of your relatives and friends. (03-238-24)
ज्ञातींश्चाप्यनुपश्येथा विष्णुर्देवगणानिव। गुरवः पालनीयास्ते गच्छ पालय मेदिनीम् ॥०३-२३८-२५॥
jñātīṁś cāpy anupaśyethā viṣṇur devagaṇān iva। guravaḥ pālanīyās te gaccha pālaya medinīm॥03-238-25॥
[ज्ञातीन् (jñātīn) - kinsmen; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनुपश्येथा (anupaśyethā) - you should look after; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; देवगणान् (devagaṇān) - groups of gods; इव (iva) - like; गुरवः (guravaḥ) - elders; पालनीयाः (pālanīyāḥ) - are to be protected; ते (te) - by you; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; पालय (pālaya) - protect; मेदिनीम् (medinīm) - the earth;]
(You should also look after the kinsmen like Viṣṇu (looks after) the hosts of gods; elders are to be protected by you; go, protect the earth.)
You should regard your kinsmen as Viṣṇu regards the hosts of gods; protect your elders; now go and take care of the earth. (03-238-25)
नन्दयन्सुहृदः सर्वाञ्शात्रवांश्चावभर्त्सयन्। कण्ठे चैनं परिष्वज्य गम्यतामित्युवाच ह ॥०३-२३८-२६॥
nandayan suhṛdaḥ sarvān śātravāṁś ca avabhartsayan. kaṇṭhe ca enaṁ pariṣvajya gamyatām iti uvāca ha ॥03-238-26॥
[नन्दयन् (nandayan) - rejoicing; making happy; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; well-wishers; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; शात्रवान् (śātravān) - enemies; च (ca) - and; अवभर्त्सयन् (avabhartsayan) - reproaching; censuring; कण्ठे (kaṇṭhe) - by the neck; on the neck; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; this one; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let (him) go; let (him) depart; इति (iti) - thus; so; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; truly;]
(Rejoicing all friends and reproaching enemies, and having embraced him by the neck, (he) indeed said thus: "Let him go." (03-238-26))
While rejoicing all his friends and reproaching his enemies, he embraced him by the neck and said, "Let him go." (03-238-26)
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दीनो दुःशासनोऽब्रवीत्। अश्रुकण्ठः सुदुःखार्तः प्राञ्जलिः प्रणिपत्य च ॥ सगद्गदमिदं वाक्यं भ्रातरं ज्येष्ठमात्मनः ॥०३-२३८-२७॥
tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā dīno duḥśāsano 'bravīt। aśru-kaṇṭhaḥ suduḥkhārtah prāñjaliḥ praṇipatya ca॥ sagadgadam idaṃ vākyaṃ bhrātaraṃ jyeṣṭham ātmanaḥ॥03-238-27॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तद्वचनं (tad vacanam) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; दीनः (dīnaḥ) - distressed; दुःशासनः (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duḥśāsana (proper noun); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; अश्रुकण्ठः (aśru-kaṇṭhaḥ) - with throat choked with tears; सुदुःखार्तः (suduḥkhārtaḥ) - afflicted by great sorrow; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined hands; प्रणिपत्य (praṇipatya) - having bowed; च (ca) - and; सगद्गदम् (sagadgadam) - with faltering (voice); इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - to brother; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - elder; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - his own;]
(Of him those words having heard, distressed Duḥśāsana spoke; with throat choked with tears, afflicted by great sorrow, with joined hands, having bowed and, with faltering this speech to his own elder brother.)
Hearing those words, the distressed Duḥśāsana, with his throat choked by tears, deeply afflicted by sorrow, joined his hands, bowed, and with a faltering voice addressed this speech to his own elder brother. (03-238-27)
प्रसीदेत्यपतद्भूमौ दूयमानेन चेतसा। दुःखितः पादयोस्तस्य नेत्रजं जलमुत्सृजन् ॥०३-२३८-२८॥
prasīdetyapatad bhūmau dūyamānena cetasā। duḥkhitaḥ pādayos tasya netra-jaṃ jalam utsṛjan ॥03-238-28॥
[प्रसीदेत्य (prasīdeti) - be pleased—thus; अपतत् (apatat) - fell; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; दूयमानेन (dūyamānena) - with agitated; चेतसा (cetasā) - mind; दुःखितः (duḥkhitaḥ) - distressed; पादयोः (pādayoḥ) - at the feet; तस्य (tasya) - of him; नेत्रजम् (netra-jam) - born from the eye; जलम् (jalam) - water; उत्सृजन् (utsṛjan) - shedding;]
(Saying 'be pleased', he fell on the ground with an agitated mind; distressed, at his feet, shedding water born from the eye.)
Saying 'be pleased', he fell on the ground with a disturbed mind, distressed, at his feet, shedding tears. (03-238-28)
उक्तवांश्च नरव्याघ्रो नैतदेवं भविष्यति। विदीर्येत्सनगा भूमिर्द्यौश्चापि शकलीभवेत् ॥ रविरात्मप्रभां जह्यात्सोमः शीतांशुतां त्यजेत् ॥०३-२३८-२९॥
uktavāṃś ca naravyāghro naitad evaṃ bhaviṣyati. vidīryet sanagā bhūmir dyaūś cāpi śakalībhavet ॥ ravir ātmaprabhāṃ jahyāt somaḥ śītāṃśutāṃ tyajet ॥03-238-29॥
[उक्तवान् (uktavān) - having spoken; च (ca) - and; नरव्याघ्रः (naravyāghraḥ) - tiger among men; न (na) - not; एतद् (etad) - this; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will happen; विदीर्येत् (vidīryet) - may be torn asunder; सनगा (sanagā) - with mountains; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - the earth; द्यौः (dyaūḥ) - the sky; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शकलीभवेत् (śakalībhavet) - may be shattered into pieces; रविः (raviḥ) - the sun; आत्मप्रभाम् (ātmaprabhām) - own radiance; जह्यात् (jahyāt) - may abandon; सोमः (somaḥ) - the moon; शीतांशुताम् (śītāṃśutām) - nature of cool rays; त्यजेत् (tyajet) - may give up;]
(Having spoken and the tiger among men—this will not happen thus. The earth with mountains may be torn asunder, and the sky also may be shattered into pieces. The sun may abandon his own radiance, the moon may give up the nature of cool rays.)
Having said this, the tiger among men declared, "This will never come to pass; the earth with its mountains could be split apart, the sky too could be shattered, the sun might abandon his radiance, and the moon might relinquish its coolness—but this will not happen." (03-238-29)
वायुः शैघ्र्यमथो जह्याद्धिमवांश्च परिव्रजेत्। शुष्येत्तोयं समुद्रेषु वह्निरप्युष्णतां त्यजेत् ॥०३-२३८-३०॥
vāyuḥ śaighryam atho jahyād himavāṃś ca parivrajet | śuṣyet toyaṃ samudreṣu vahnir apy uṣṇatāṃ tyajet ||03-238-30||
[वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; शैघ्र्यम् (śaighryam) - swiftness; अथः (atho) - and; जहिात् (jahyāt) - should abandon; हिमवान् (himavān) - the snowy mountain; च (ca) - and; परिव्रजेत् (parivrajet) - should leave (wander away); शुष्येत् (śuṣyet) - should dry up; तोयम् (toyam) - water; समुद्रेषु (samudreṣu) - in the oceans; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - fire; अपि (api) - even; उष्णताम् (uṣṇatām) - heat; त्यजेत् (tyajet) - should give up;]
(Wind swiftness and should abandon, the snowy mountain and should leave. Water should dry up in the oceans, fire even heat should give up.)
The wind might abandon its swiftness, the snowy mountain might depart, water in the oceans might dry up, and even fire might give up its heat. (03-238-30)
न चाहं त्वदृते राजन् प्राशसेयं वसुन्धराम्। पुनः पुनः प्रसीदेति वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ॥ त्वमेव नः कुले राजा भविष्यसि शतं समाः ॥०३-२३८-३१॥
na cāhaṃ tvadṛte rājan praśāseyaṃ vasundharām। punaḥ punaḥ prasīdeti vākyaṃ cedam uvāca ha ॥ tvam eva naḥ kule rājā bhaviṣyasi śataṃ samāḥ ॥03-238-31॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वदृते (tvadṛte) - without you; राजन् (rājan) - O King; प्रशासेयं (praśāseyaṃ) - would govern; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - the earth; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; प्रसीद (prasīda) - be pleased; इति (iti) - thus; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - only; नः (naḥ) - of us; for us; कुले (kule) - in the family; राजा (rājā) - king; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you shall be; शतम् (śatam) - a hundred; समाः (samāḥ) - years;]
(Not and I, without you, O King, would govern the earth. Again and again, 'be pleased'—this speech indeed he said. You only for us in the family, king, you shall be a hundred years.)
O King, I would not govern the earth without you. Again and again he said these words: 'Be pleased.' You alone shall be king in our family for a hundred years. (03-238-31)
एवमुक्त्वा स राजेन्द्र सस्वनं प्ररुरोद ह। पादौ सङ्गृह्य मानार्हौ भ्रातुर्ज्येष्ठस्य भारत ॥०३-२३८-३२॥
evam-uktvā sa rājendra sasvanaṁ praruroda ha। pādau saṅgṛhya mānārhau bhrātuḥ jyeṣṭhasya bhārata ॥03-238-32॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; स (sa) - he; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सस्वनम् (sasvanam) - aloud; प्ररुरोद (praruroda) - wept; ह (ha) - indeed; पादौ (pādau) - feet; सङ्गृह्य (saṅgṛhya) - having seized; मानार्हौ (mānārhau) - worthy of honor; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of (his) brother; ज्येष्ठस्य (jyeṣṭhasya) - elder; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;]
(Thus having spoken, he, O king, wept aloud indeed, having seized the feet worthy of honor of his elder brother, O descendant of Bharata.)
After saying this, he, O king, seized the honored feet of his elder brother and wept aloud, O descendant of Bharata. (03-238-32)
तथा तौ दुःखितौ दृष्ट्वा दुःशासनसुयोधनौ। अभिगम्य व्यथाविष्टः कर्णस्तौ प्रत्यभाषत ॥०३-२३८-३३॥
tathā tau duḥkhitau dṛṣṭvā duḥśāsanasuyodhanau। abhigamya vyathāviṣṭaḥ karṇas tau pratyabhāṣata ॥03-238-33॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तौ (tau) - those two; दुःखितौ (duḥkhitau) - sorrowful; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; दुःशासनसुयोधनौ (duḥśāsanasuyodhanau) - Duḥśāsana and Suyodhana; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; व्यथाविष्टः (vyathāviṣṭaḥ) - afflicted with pain; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; तौ (tau) - those two; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed;]
(Thus, having seen those two sorrowful—Duḥśāsana and Suyodhana—having approached, Karṇa, afflicted with pain, addressed those two.)
Then, seeing Duḥśāsana and Suyodhana in sorrow, Karṇa, overwhelmed with grief, approached them and addressed them. (03-238-33)
विषीदथः किं कौरव्यौ बालिश्यात्प्राकृताविव। न शोकः शोचमानस्य विनिवर्तेत कस्यचित् ॥०३-२३८-३४॥
viṣīdathaḥ kiṃ kauravyau bāliśyāt prākṛtāv iva। na śokaḥ śocamānasya vinivarteta kasyacit ॥03-238-34॥
[विषीदथः (viṣīdathaḥ) - you two grieve; किं (kiṃ) - why; कौरव्यौ (kauravyau) - O descendants of Kuru (dual); बालिश्यात् (bāliśyāt) - from childishness; प्राकृतौ (prākṛtau) - like natural men; इव (iva) - as if; न (na) - not; शोकः (śokaḥ) - grief; शोचमानस्य (śocamānasya) - of one who grieves; विनिवर्तेत (vinivarteta) - would depart; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of anyone; ०३-२३८-३४ (03-238-34) -;]
(You two grieve, why, O Kauravas, from childishness, as if like natural men? Not grief of one who grieves would depart of anyone.)
Why do you both grieve, O Kauravas, simply out of childishness, as if you were ordinary men? Grief does not leave anyone just because they grieve. (03-238-34)
यदा च शोचतः शोको व्यसनं नापकर्षति। सामर्थ्यं किं त्वतः शोके शोचमानौ प्रपश्यथः ॥ धृतिं गृह्णीत मा शत्रूञ्शोचन्तौ नन्दयिष्यथः ॥०३-२३८-३५॥
yadā ca śocataḥ śokaḥ vyasanaṃ nāpakarṣati। sāmarthyaṃ kiṃ tvataḥ śoke śocamānau prapaśyathaḥ ॥ dhṛtiṃ gṛhṇīta mā śatrūñ śocantau nandayiṣyathaḥ ॥03-238-35॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; च (ca) - and; शोचतः (śocataḥ) - of those grieving; शोकः (śokaḥ) - grief; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - misfortune; न (na) - not; अपकर्षति (apakarṣati) - removes; सामर्थ्यम् (sāmarthyam) - capability; किम् (kim) - what; त्वतः (tvataḥ) - from you two; शोके (śoke) - in sorrow; शोचमानौ (śocamānau) - grieving (you two); प्रपश्यथः (prapaśyathaḥ) - do you see; धृतिम् (dhṛtim) - firmness; गृह्णीत (gṛhṇīta) - take up; मा (mā) - do not; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; शोचन्तौ (śocantau) - by grieving (you two); नन्दयिष्यथः (nandayiṣyathaḥ) - you will delight; ॥०३-२३८-३५॥ (॥03-238-35॥) - ;]
(And when, of those grieving, grief does not remove misfortune, what capability do you two see in sorrow, grieving? Take up firmness; do not, by grieving, you two, delight the enemies. (03-238-35))
When grief does not remove misfortune even for those who grieve, what ability do you two see in sorrow while grieving? Seize firmness; do not delight the enemies by your grieving. (03-238-35)
कर्तव्यं हि कृतं राजन्पाण्डवैस्तव मोक्षणम्। नित्यमेव प्रियं कार्यं राज्ञो विषयवासिभिः ॥ पाल्यमानास्त्वया ते हि निवसन्ति गतज्वराः ॥०३-२३८-३६॥
kartavyaṁ hi kṛtaṁ rājan pāṇḍavais tava mokṣaṇam। nityam eva priyaṁ kāryaṁ rājño viṣayavāsibhiḥ॥ pālyamānās tvayā te hi nivasanti gatajvarāḥ॥03-238-36॥
[कर्तव्यं (kartavyam) - that which should be done; duty; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; कृतं (kṛtam) - has been done; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; तव (tava) - your; मोक्षणम् (mokṣaṇam) - liberation; release; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; just; प्रियं (priyam) - dear; pleasing; कार्यं (kāryam) - should be done; ought to be done; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; विषयवासिभिः (viṣayavāsibhiḥ) - by the inhabitants of the kingdom; पाल्यमानाः (pālyamānāḥ) - being protected; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; ते (te) - they; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; निवसन्ति (nivasanti) - live; dwell; गतज्वराः (gatajvarāḥ) - free from distress; relieved;]
(That which should be done indeed has been done, O king, by the Pāṇḍavas; your release. Always indeed dear should be done by the inhabitants of the kingdom for the king. Being protected by you, they indeed live free from distress. (03-238-36))
O king, the duty has indeed been performed by the Pāṇḍavas — your release. The subjects of a kingdom should always do what is dear to the king. Protected by you, they live free from distress. (03-238-36)
नार्हस्येवङ्गते मन्युं कर्तुं प्राकृतवद्यथा। विषण्णास्तव सोदर्यास्त्वयि प्रायं समास्थिते ॥ उत्तिष्ठ व्रज भद्रं ते समाश्वासय सोदरान् ॥०३-२३८-३७॥
nārhasyevaṅgate manyuṃ kartuṃ prākṛtavadyathā। viṣaṇṇāstava sodaryāstvayi prāyaṃ samāsthite ॥ uttiṣṭha vraja bhadraṃ te samāśvāsaya sodarān ॥03-238-37॥
[न (na) - not; अर्हस्य् (arhasya) - thou art fit (worthy); एवङ्गते (evaṅgate) - in this circumstance; मन्युं (manyum) - anger; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do (to indulge); प्राकृतवत् (prākṛtavat) - like an ordinary (person); यथा (yathā) - as; विषण्णाः (viṣaṇṇāḥ) - dejected; तव (tava) - your; सोदर्याः (sodaryāḥ) - full-brothers; त्वयि (tvayi) - upon you; प्रायं (prāyaṃ) - lying down; समास्थिते (samāsthite) - when situated (thus); उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; व्रज (vraja) - go; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - well-being; ते (te) - to you; समाश्वासय (samāśvāsaya) - console; सोदरान् (sodarān) - brothers;]
(Not art thou fit, in this circumstance, anger to indulge, like an ordinary person as. Dejected are your brothers, upon you lying down, when situated thus. Arise, go, well-being to you, console the brothers.)
You should not indulge in anger in this situation as an ordinary person would. Your brothers are dejected, with you lying down in this way. Get up, go—may well-being be yours—comfort your brothers. (03-238-37)
राजन्नद्यावगच्छामि तवेह लघुसत्त्वताम्। किमत्र चित्रं यद्वीर मोक्षितः पाण्डवैरसि ॥ सद्यो वशं समापन्नः शत्रूणां शत्रुकर्शन ॥०३-२३८-३८॥
rājann adyāvagacchāmi taveha laghusattvatām । kim atra citraṃ yad vīra mokṣitaḥ pāṇḍavair asi ॥ sadyo vaśaṃ samāpannaḥ śatrūṇāṃ śatrukarśana ॥03-238-38॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; अद्य (adya) - today; अवगच्छामि (avagacchāmi) - I understand; तव (tava) - your; इह (iha) - here; लघुसत्त्वताम् (laghu-sattvatām) - weakness (frailty) of character; किम् (kim) - what; अत्र (atra) - in this; चित्रम् (citraṃ) - wonder; यत् (yat) - that; वीर (vīra) - O hero; मोक्षितः (mokṣitaḥ) - released; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; असि (asi) - you are; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; वशम् (vaśam) - in control; समापन्नः (samāpannaḥ) - attained; शत्रूणाम् (śatrūṇām) - of enemies; शत्रुकर्शन (śatrukarśana) - O destroyer of enemies;]
(O king, today I understand here your weakness of character. What is the wonder in this, O hero, that you are released by the Pāṇḍavas? Immediately you have attained the control of the enemies, O destroyer of enemies.)
O king, today I realize here your weakness of character. O hero, what is surprising in your being released by the Pāṇḍavas? You were at once brought under the power of your enemies, O tormentor of foes. (03-238-38)
सेनाजीवैश्च कौरव्य तथा विषयवासिभिः। अज्ञातैर्यदि वा ज्ञातैः कर्तव्यं नृपतेः प्रियम् ॥०३-२३८-३९॥
senājīvaiś ca kauravya tathā viṣayavāsibhiḥ। ajñātair yadi vā jñātaiḥ kartavyaṃ nṛpateḥ priyam॥03-238-39॥
[सेनाजीवैः (senājīvaiḥ) - by army servicemen; च (ca) - and; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; तथा (tathā) - also; विषयवासिभिः (viṣayavāsibhiḥ) - by the residents of the kingdom; अज्ञातैः (ajñātaiḥ) - by unknown (persons); यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; ज्ञातैः (jñātaiḥ) - by known (persons); कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - should be done; नृपतेः (nṛpateḥ) - of the king; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasing (thing);]
(By army servicemen and, O Kauravya, also by the residents of the kingdom, by unknown (persons), if or by known (persons), the pleasing (thing) of the king should be done.)
O Kauravya, whether by soldiers, residents of the kingdom, or others, whether known or unknown, what is pleasing to the king should be done. (03-238-39)
प्रायः प्रधानाः पुरुषाः क्षोभयन्त्यरिवाहिनीम्। निगृह्यन्ते च युद्धेषु मोक्ष्यन्ते च स्वसैनिकैः ॥०३-२३८-४०॥
prāyaḥ pradhānāḥ puruṣāḥ kṣobhayanty arivāhinīm। nigṛhyante ca yuddeṣu mokṣyante ca svasainikaiḥ॥03-238-40॥
[प्रायः (prāyaḥ) - generally; प्रधानाः (pradhānāḥ) - chief; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; क्षोभयन्ति (kṣobhayanti) - agitate; अरिवाहिनीम् (arivāhinīm) - enemy host; निगृह्यन्ते (nigṛhyante) - are restrained; च (ca) - and; युद्धेषु (yuddeṣu) - in battles; मोक्ष्यन्ते (mokṣyante) - are released; च (ca) - and; स्वसैनिकैः (svasainikaiḥ) - by their own soldiers;]
(Generally, chief men agitate the enemy host. They are restrained in battles and are released by their own soldiers.)
Usually, the leading men disturb the enemy forces; in battle, they are restrained and also rescued by their own troops. (03-238-40)
सेनाजीवाश्च ये राज्ञां विषये सन्ति मानवाः। तैः सङ्गम्य नृपार्थाय यतितव्यं यथातथम् ॥०३-२३८-४१॥
senājīvāś ca ye rājñāṃ viṣaye santi mānavāḥ। taiḥ saṅgamya nṛpārthāya yatitavyaṃ yathātatham ॥03-238-41॥
[सेनाजीवाः (senājīvāḥ) - those who live by the army; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of the kings; विषये (viṣaye) - within the domain; सन्ति (santi) - are; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - men; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; सङ्गम्य (saṅgamya) - having come together; नृपार्थाय (nṛpārthāya) - for the sake of the king; यतितव्यम् (yatitavyam) - should be strived; यथातथम् (yathātatham) - by any means;]
(Those who live by the army and the men who are within the domains of kings—having come together by them, for the sake of the king, should be strived by any means.)
All those who live by the army, and all men who are within the kings’ domains, should, coming together, strive in whatever way possible for the king’s sake. (03-238-41)
यद्येवं पाण्डवै राजन्भवद्विषयवासिभिः। यदृच्छया मोक्षितोऽद्य तत्र का परिदेवना ॥०३-२३८-४२॥
yadyevaṃ pāṇḍavai rājan bhavad-viṣaya-vāsibhiḥ। yadṛcchayā mokṣito'dya tatra kā paridevanā ॥03-238-42॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भवद्विषयवासिभिः (bhavad-viṣaya-vāsibhiḥ) - by those dwelling in your territory; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; मोक्षितः (mokṣitaḥ) - freed; अद्य (adya) - today; तत्र (tatra) - there; का (kā) - what; परिदेवना (paridevanā) - lamentation;]
(If thus by the Pāṇḍavas, O king, by those dwelling in your territory, by chance freed today, there what lamentation?)
O king, if it is so that today I have been freed by chance by the Pāṇḍavas and those dwelling in your land, what cause is there for lamentation? (03-238-42)
न चैतत्साधु यद्राजन्पाण्डवास्त्वां नृपोत्तम। स्वसेनया सम्प्रयान्तं नानुयान्ति स्म पृष्ठतः ॥०३-२३८-४३॥
na caitat sādhu yad rājan pāṇḍavās tvām nṛpotama। sva-senayā samprayāntam na anuyānti sma pṛṣṭhataḥ॥03-238-43॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; साधु (sādhu) - proper; यत् (yat) - that; राजन् (rājan) - O King; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; नृपोत्तम (nṛpotama) - best of kings; स्वसेनया (sva-senayā) - with (their) own army; सम्प्रयान्तम् (samprayāntam) - departing; न (na) - not; अनुयान्ति (anuyānti) - follow; स्म (sma) - indeed; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind;]
(And this is not proper, O King, that the Pāṇḍavas, O best of kings, with their own army, do not indeed follow you departing from behind.)
And it is not proper, O King, that the Pāṇḍavas, O best of kings, did not follow you with their army as you were departing. (03-238-43)
शूराश्च बलवन्तश्च संयुगेष्वपलायिनः। भवतस्ते सभायां वै प्रेष्यतां पूर्वमागताः ॥०३-२३८-४४॥
śūrāś ca balavantaś ca saṁyugeṣv apalāyinaḥ। bhavatas te sabhāyāṁ vai preṣyatāṁ pūrvam āgatāḥ॥03-238-44॥
[शूराः (śūrāḥ) - valiant ones; च (ca) - and; बलवन्तः (balavantaḥ) - mighty ones; च (ca) - and; संयुगेषु (saṁyugeṣu) - in battles; अपलायिनः (apalāyinaḥ) - not fleeing; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; ते (te) - those; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रेष्यताम् (preṣyatām) - let (them) be sent; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; आगताः (āgatāḥ) - have arrived;]
(Valiant and mighty, not fleeing in battles, of you those in the assembly indeed let them be sent before (who) have arrived.)
Let those of your men who are valiant, mighty, and do not flee in battle, who have arrived before in the assembly, indeed be sent first. (03-238-44)
पाण्डवेयानि रत्नानि त्वमद्याप्युपभुञ्जसे। सत्त्वस्थान्पाण्डवान्पश्य न ते प्रायमुपाविशन् ॥ उत्तिष्ठ राजन्भद्रं ते न चिन्तां कर्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-२३८-४५॥
pāṇḍaveyāni ratnāni tvam adyāpy upabhuñjase। sattvasthān pāṇḍavān paśya na te prāyam upāviśan॥ uttiṣṭha rājan bhadraṃ te na cintāṃ kartum arhasi॥03-238-45॥
[पाण्डवेयानि (pāṇḍaveyāni) (pāṇḍaveyāni) - belonging to the sons of Pāṇḍu; रत्नानि (ratnāni) (ratnāni) - jewels; त्वम् (tvam) (tvam) - you; अद्यापि (adyāpi) (adyāpi) - even today; उपभुञ्जसे (upabhuñjase) (upabhuñjase) - you enjoy; सत्त्वस्थान् (sattvasthān) (sattvasthān) - steadfast in character; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; पश्य (paśya) (paśya) - see; न (na) (na) - not; ते (te) (te) - by you; प्रायम् (prāyam) (prāyam) - religious vow (fast); उपाविशन् (upāviśan) (upāviśan) - have undertaken; उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) (uttiṣṭha) - arise; राजन् (rājan) (rājan) - O king; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) (bhadraṃ) - well-being; ते (te) (te) - to you; न (na) (na) - not; चिन्तां (cintāṃ) (cintāṃ) - worry; कर्तुम् (kartum) (kartum) - to make; अर्हसि (arhasi) (arhasi) - you ought;]
(The jewels belonging to the sons of Pāṇḍu you even today enjoy; those steadfast in character, the Pāṇḍavas, see; not by you religious vow have been undertaken. Arise, O king, well-being to you, not worry to make you ought. (03-238-45))
You still enjoy the jewels belonging to the Pāṇḍavas even today. Look at the steadfast Pāṇḍavas—they have not undertaken a fast because of you. Arise, O king, welfare be with you; you should not worry. (03-238-45)
अवश्यमेव नृपते राज्ञो विषयवासिभिः। प्रियाण्याचरितव्यानि तत्र का परिदेवना ॥०३-२३८-४६॥
avaśyameva nṛpate rājño viṣayavāsibhiḥ। priyāṇyācaritavyāni tatra kā paridevanā ॥03-238-46॥
[अवश्यमेव (avaśyam-eva) - certainly indeed; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; विषयवासिभिः (viṣayavāsibhiḥ) - by the inhabitants of the kingdom; प्रियाणि (priyāṇi) - pleasing things; आचरितव्यानि (ācaritavyāni) - must be done; तत्र (tatra) - there; का (kā) - what; परिदेवना (paridevanā) - lamentation;]
(Certainly indeed, O king, of the king by the inhabitants of the kingdom, pleasing things must be done; there, what lamentation.)
Certainly, O king, the inhabitants of the kingdom must do things pleasing to the king; what cause is there for lamentation in this. (03-238-46)
मद्वाक्यमेतद्राजेन्द्र यद्येवं न करिष्यसि। स्थास्यामीह भवत्पादौ शुश्रूषन्नरिमर्दन ॥०३-२३८-४७॥
madvākyaṁ etad rājendra yadi evaṁ na kariṣyasi। sthāsyāmi iha bhavat-pādau śuśrūṣan narimardana ॥03-238-47॥
[मद्वाक्यम् (madvākyaṁ) - my command; एतत् (etad) - this; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; यदि (yadi) - if; एवम् (evaṁ) - thus; न (na) - not; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - you will do; स्थास्यामि (sthāsyāmi) - I will remain; इह (iha) - here; भवत्पादौ (bhavat-pādau) - at your feet; शुश्रूषन् (śuśrūṣan) - serving; अरिमर्दन (narimardana) - O destroyer of enemies;]
(My command this, O king, if thus not you will do, I will remain here at your feet, serving, O destroyer of enemies.)
O king, if you do not carry out this command of mine thus, I will remain here at your feet, serving you, O destroyer of enemies. (03-238-47)
नोत्सहे जीवितुमहं त्वद्विहीनो नरर्षभ। प्रायोपविष्टस्तु नृप राज्ञां हास्यो भविष्यसि ॥०३-२३८-४८॥
notsahe jīvitumahaṃ tvad-vihīno naraṛṣabha। prāyopaviṣṭastu nṛpa rājñāṃ hāsyo bhaviṣyasi॥03-238-48॥
[नोत्सहे (na utsahe) - not able; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वद्विहीनः (tvad-vihīnaḥ) - deprived of you; नरर्षभ (nara-ṛṣabha) - O best of men; प्रायोपविष्टः (prāya-upaviṣṭaḥ) - sitting for fast unto death; तु (tu) - but; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - among kings; हास्यः (hāsyaḥ) - an object of ridicule; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become;]
(Not able to live I deprived of you, O best of men; sitting for fast unto death, but O king, among kings, an object of ridicule you will become.)
O best of men, I am not able to live deprived of you; but if you, O king, resolve to fast unto death, you will become an object of ridicule among kings. (03-238-48)

एवमुक्तस्तु कर्णेन राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा। नैवोत्थातुं मनश्चक्रे स्वर्गाय कृतनिश्चयः ॥०३-२३८-४९॥
evamuktastu karṇena rājā duryodhanastadā। naivotthātuṃ manaścakre svargāya kṛtaniścayaḥ ॥03-238-49॥
[एवमुक्तः (evam uktaḥ) - thus spoken; तु (tu) - but; कर्णेन (karṇena) - by Karṇa; राजा (rājā) - king; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; उत्थातुं (utthātum) - to rise; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; चक्रे (cakre) - made (resolved); स्वर्गाय (svargāya) - for heaven; कृतनिश्चयः (kṛtaniścayaḥ) - having made up his mind;]
(Thus spoken but by Karṇa, king Duryodhana then not indeed to rise mind made, for heaven having made up his mind.)
Thus, when Karṇa had spoken in this way, king Duryodhana then did not make up his mind to rise, having firmly resolved to attain heaven. (03-238-49)
