śatrubhir jitabaddhasya pāṇḍavaiś ca mahātmabhiḥ। mokṣitasya yudhā paścān mānasthasya durātmanah ॥03-236-1॥
[शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - by enemies; जितबद्धस्य (jitabaddhasya) - having been conquered and bound; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by the great-souled; मोक्षितस्य (mokṣitasya) - of the one released; युधा (yudhā) - by battle; पश्चात् (paścāt) - after; मानस्थस्य (mānasthasya) - of the one who engaged in pride; दुरात्मनः (durātmanah) - of the wicked; ॥०३-२३६-१॥ (॥03-236-1॥) - ;]
(Of the wicked one who, having been conquered and bound by enemies and by the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, after being released in battle, (and then) engaging in pride.)

कत्थनस्यावलिप्तस्य गर्वितस्य च नित्यशः। सदा च पौरुषौदार्यैः पाण्डवानवमन्यतः ॥०३-२३६-२॥
katthanasya āvaliptasya garvitasya ca nityaśaḥ। sadā ca pauruṣaudāryaiḥ pāṇḍavān avamanyataḥ॥03-236-2॥
[कत्थनस्य (katthanasya) - of boasting; आवलिप्तस्य (āvaliptasya) - of arrogance; गर्वितस्य (garvitasya) - of pride; च (ca) - and; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always; सदा (sadā) - constantly; च (ca) - and; पौरुषौदार्यैः (pauruṣaudāryaiḥ) - by manliness and generosity; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; अवमन्यतः (avamanyataḥ) - used to despise;]
(Of boasting, of arrogance, of pride and always; constantly and by manliness and generosity, he used to despise the Pāṇḍavas.)
He, being ever boastful, arrogant, and proud, always, and through his manliness and generosity, used to despise the Pāṇḍavas. (03-236-2)
दुर्योधनस्य पापस्य नित्याहङ्कारवादिनः। प्रवेशो हास्तिनपुरे दुष्करः प्रतिभाति मे ॥०३-२३६-३॥
duryodhanasya pāpasya nityāhaṅkāravādinaḥ। praveśo hāstinapure duṣkaraḥ pratibhāti me ॥03-236-3॥

तस्य लज्जान्वितस्यैव शोकव्याकुलचेतसः। प्रवेशं विस्तरेण त्वं वैशम्पायन कीर्तय ॥०३-२३६-४॥
tasya lajjānvitasyaiva śokavyākulacetasaḥ। praveśaṃ vistareṇa tvaṃ vaiśampāyana kīrtaya ॥03-236-4॥

But Suyodhana, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, sent by Dharmarāja, approached with his face lowered in shame, deeply distressed and dejected. (03-236-5)
स्वपुरं प्रययौ राजा चतुरङ्गबलानुगः। शोकोपहतया बुद्ध्या चिन्तयानः पराभवम् ॥०३-२३६-६॥
svapuraṃ prayayau rājā caturaṅga-balānugaḥ। śoka-upahatayā buddhyā cintayānaḥ parābhavam ॥03-236-6॥

विमुच्य पथि यानानि देशे सुयवसोदके। संनिविष्टः शुभे रम्ये भूमिभागे यथेप्सितम् ॥ हस्त्यश्वरथपादातं यथास्थानं न्यवेशयत् ॥०३-२३६-७॥
vimucya pathi yānāni deśe suyavasodake। saṃniviṣṭaḥ śubhe ramye bhūmibhāge yathepsitam॥ hastyaśvarathapādātaṃ yathāsthānaṃ nyaveśayat॥03-236-7॥
[विमुच्य (vimucya) - having unyoked;, पथि (pathi) - on the road;, यानानि (yānāni) - vehicles;, देशे (deśe) - in the place;, सुयवस-उदके (suyavasa-udake) - with good pasture and water;, संनिविष्टः (saṃniviṣṭaḥ) - having settled;, शुभे (śubhe) - in auspicious;, रम्ये (ramye) - pleasant;, भूमि-भागे (bhūmi-bhāge) - piece of land;, यथा-इप्सितम् (yathā-ipsitam) - as desired;, हस्ति-अश्व-रथ-पादातम् (hasti-aśva-ratha-pādātam) - elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry;, यथा-स्थानम् (yathā-sthānam) - according to place;, न्यवेशयत् (nyaveśayat) - he stationed;]
(Having unyoked the vehicles on the road in a place with good pasture and water, having settled in an auspicious, pleasant piece of land as desired, he stationed the elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry according to (their) place.)

अथोपविष्टं राजानं पर्यङ्के ज्वलनप्रभे। उपप्लुतं यथा सोमं राहुणा रात्रिसङ्क्षये ॥ उपगम्याब्रवीत्कर्णो दुर्योधनमिदं तदा ॥०३-२३६-८॥
athopaviṣṭaṃ rājānaṃ paryaṅke jvalanaprabhe। upaplutaṃ yathā somaṃ rāhuṇā rātrisaṅkṣaye॥ upagamyābravītkarṇo duryodhanamidaṃ tadā॥03-236-8॥
[अथ (atha) - then; उपविष्टं (upaviṣṭam) - seated; राजानं (rājānam) - king (accusative singular); पर्यङ्के (paryaṅke) - on a couch; ज्वलनप्रभे (jvalanaprabhe) - radiant like fire; उपप्लुतं (upaplutaṃ) - obscured; यथा (yathā) - as; सोमं (somaṃ) - the moon; राहुणा (rāhuṇā) - by Rāhu (eclipsed); रात्रिसङ्क्षये (rātrisaṅkṣaye) - at the end of the night; उपगम्य (upagamya) - approaching; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke, said; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - to Duryodhana; इदं (idaṃ) - this; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then, having approached the king, seated on a couch radiant like fire, obscured as the moon by Rāhu at the end of the night, Karṇa spoke this to Duryodhana then.)
Then Karṇa approached king Duryodhana—who was seated on a couch glowing like fire, overshadowed like the moon by Rāhu at the end of the night—and spoke these words to him. (03-236-8)
दिष्ट्या जीवसि गान्धारे दिष्ट्या नः सङ्गमः पुनः। दिष्ट्या त्वया जिताश्चैव गन्धर्वाः कामरूपिणः ॥०३-२३६-९॥
diṣṭyā jīvasi gāndhāre diṣṭyā naḥ saṅgamaḥ punaḥ। diṣṭyā tvayā jitāś caiva gandharvāḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ॥03-236-9॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by good luck; जीवसि (jīvasi) - you are alive; गान्धारे (gāndhāre) - Gandhari (O Gandhari; vocative); दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; नः (naḥ) - our; to us; सङ्गमः (saṅgamaḥ) - meeting; union; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; जिताः (jitāḥ) - conquered; won; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; कामरूपिणः (kāmarūpiṇaḥ) - those assuming desired forms;]
(By fortune you are alive, O Gandhari; by fortune our meeting (is) again; by fortune by you (are) conquered indeed Gandharvas assuming desired forms.)
It is by fortune that you are alive, O Gandhari; by fortune we have met again; by fortune, you have indeed conquered the Gandharvas who can assume any form. (3-236-9)
दिष्ट्या समग्रान्पश्यामि भ्रातॄंस्ते कुरुनन्दन। विजिगीषून्रणान्मुक्तान्निर्जितारीन्महारथान् ॥०३-२३६-१०॥
diṣṭyā samagrān paśyāmi bhrātṝn te kurunandana. vijigīṣūn raṇāt muktān nirjitārīn mahārathān ॥03-236-10॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by good luck; समग्रान् (samagrān) - all (together); entire; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; ते (te) - your; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus; O son of the Kuru lineage; विजिगीषून् (vijigīṣūn) - desirous of victory; रणात् (raṇāt) - from battle; मुक्तान् (muktān) - released; freed; निर्जित-आरीन् (nirjita-ārīn) - having conquered enemies; महारथान् (mahārathān) - great warriors;]
(By fortune, all your brothers, O delight of the Kurus, desiring victory, released from battle, having conquered enemies, great warriors, I see.)
By good fortune, O son of the Kuru lineage, I see all your brothers—great warriors, eager for victory, freed from battle, having defeated their enemies. (03-236-10)
अहं त्वभिद्रुतः सर्वैर्गन्धर्वैः पश्यतस्तव। नाशक्नुवं स्थापयितुं दीर्यमाणां स्ववाहिनीम् ॥०३-२३६-११॥
ahaṁ tv abhidrutaḥ sarvair gandharvaiḥ paśyataḥ tava। nāśaknuvaṁ sthāpayituṁ dīryamāṇāṁ svavāhinīm॥03-236-11॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; त्व (tv) - but; अभिद्रुतः (abhidrutaḥ) - attacked; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by the Gandharvas; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while (you were) seeing; तव (tava) - your; न (na) - not; अशक्नुवम् (aśaknuvam) - was able; स्थापयितुम् (sthāpayitum) - to stop; दीर्यमाणां (dīryamāṇām) - being broken; स्ववाहिनीम् (svavāhinīm) - my own army;]
(I but attacked by all Gandharvas while you were seeing, not was able to stop being broken my own army.)
But I, attacked by all the Gandharvas while you watched, was not able to stop my own army, which was being routed. (03-236-11)
शरक्षताङ्गश्च भृशं व्यपयातोऽभिपीडितः। इदं त्वत्यद्भुतं मन्ये यद्युष्मानिह भारत ॥०३-२३६-१२॥
śarakṣatāṅgaś ca bhṛśaṃ vyapayāto'bhipīḍitaḥ। idaṃ tv atyadbhutaṃ manye yady uṣmān iha bhārata ॥03-236-12॥
[शर-क्षत-अङ्गः (śara-kṣata-aṅgaḥ) - one whose limbs are wounded by arrows; च (ca) - and; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - excessively; व्यपयातः (vyapayātaḥ) - departed; अभिपीडितः (abhipīḍitaḥ) - much afflicted; इदं (idaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; अत्यद्भुतम् (atyadbhutam) - most wonderful; मन्ये (manye) - I think; यत् (yat) - that; युष्मान् (yuṣmān) - you (plural); इह (iha) - here; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(And one whose limbs are wounded by arrows and much afflicted having departed excessively, this but most wonderful I think that you here, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, I consider it most wonderful that, although your limbs are wounded by arrows and you are much afflicted and have greatly withdrawn, you are here. (03-236-12)
अरिष्टानक्षतांश्चापि सदारधनवाहनान्। विमुक्तान्सम्प्रपश्यामि तस्माद्युद्धादमानुषात् ॥०३-२३६-१३॥
ariṣṭān akṣatān ca api sadā radhana-vāhanān. vimuktān samprapaśyāmi tasmāt yuddhāt amānuṣāt ॥03-236-13॥
[अरिष्टान् (ariṣṭān) - unharmed; अक्षतान् (akṣatān) - uninjured; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सदा (sadā) - always; अरधनवाहनान् (radhana-vāhanān) - chariots and vehicles; विमुक्तान् (vimuktān) - released; सम्प्रपश्यामि (samprapaśyāmi) - I behold; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; युद्धात् (yuddhāt) - from the battle; अमानुषात् (amānuṣāt) - non-human;]
(Unharmed, uninjured, and indeed always chariots and vehicles released I behold; therefore from the battle non-human.)
I perceive unharmed and uninjured chariots and vehicles being constantly released; therefore, this battle is beyond human (powers). (03-236-13)
नैतस्य कर्ता लोकेऽस्मिन्पुमान्विद्येत भारत। यत्कृतं ते महाराज सह भ्रातृभिराहवे ॥०३-२३६-१४॥
naitasya kartā loke'smin pumān vidyeta bhārata। yat kṛtaṃ te mahārāja saha bhrātṛbhiḥ āhave ॥03-236-14॥
[न (na) - not; एतस्य (etasya) - of this; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; पुमान् (pumān) - man; विद्येत (vidyeta) - could be found; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; यत् (yat) - which; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; ते (te) - by you; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सह (saha) - together with; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; आहवे (āhave) - in the battle;]
(Not of this the doer in this world a man could be found, O Bhārata; which has been done by you, O great king, together with your brothers in the battle.)
O Bhārata, no man in this world could be found as the doer of what you, O great king, together with your brothers, have done in the battle. (03-236-14)
एवमुक्तस्तु कर्णेन राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा। उवाचावाक्षिरा राजन्बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा ॥०३-२३६-१५॥
evam uktas tu karṇena rājā duryodhanas tadā। uvāca āvakśirā rājan bāṣpagadgadayā girā॥03-236-15॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; तु (tu) - but; कर्णेन (karṇena) - by Karṇa; राजा (rājā) - king; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तदा (tadā) - then; उवाच (uvāca) - said; आवक्षिरा (āvakśirā) - with head cast down; राजन् (rājan) - O king; बाष्पगद्गदया (bāṣpagadgadayā) - choked with tears; गिरा (girā) - with voice;]
(Thus having been addressed, but by Karṇa, king Duryodhana then said, with head cast down, O king, with a voice choked with tears.)
Thus, when addressed by Karṇa, King Duryodhana then, his head bowed and voice choked with tears, spoke, O king. (03-236-15)
