भोः सुयोधन राजेन्द्र भरतानां कुलोद्वह। शूरैः परिवृतो नित्यं तथैव च महात्मभिः ॥०३-२४०-१॥
bhoḥ suyodhana rājendra bharatānāṃ kulodvaha। śūraiḥ parivṛto nityaṃ tathaiva ca mahātmabhiḥ ॥03-240-1॥
[भोः (bhoḥ) - O; (vocative particle); सुयोधन (suyodhana) - Suyodhana; (proper noun); राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O chief of kings; (vocative); भरतानां (bharatānāṃ) - of the Bharatas; (genitive plural); कुलोद्वह (kulodvaha) - excellent one of the lineage; (vocative); शूरैः (śūraiḥ) - by heroes; (instrumental plural); परिवृतः (parivṛtaḥ) - surrounded; (past participle); नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; (adverb); तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; (adverb); च (ca) - and; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by great-souled ones; (instrumental plural);]
(O Suyodhana, O chief of kings, excellent one of the Bharatas’ lineage, always surrounded by heroes and likewise by great-souled ones.)
O Suyodhana, O king among kings, champion of the Bharata race, you are always surrounded by heroes as well as great-souled men. (03-240-1)
अकार्षीः साहसमिदं कस्मात्प्रायोपवेशनम्। आत्मत्यागी ह्यवाग्याति वाच्यतां चायशस्करीम् ॥०३-२४०-२॥
akārṣīḥ sāhasam idaṃ kasmāt prāyopaveśanam। ātmatyāgī hi avāg yāti vācyatāṃ ca ayaśaskariṃ॥03-240-2॥
[अकार्षीः (akārṣīḥ) - you have done; you performed; साहसम् (sāhasam) - rash deed; daring act; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - for what reason; why; प्रायोपवेशनम् (prāyopaveśanam) - fasting unto death; आत्मत्यागी (ātmatyāgī) - one who abandons the self (life); हि (hi) - indeed; truly; अवाक् (avāk) - downwards; to a lower state; याति (yāti) - goes; attains; वाच्यताम् (vācyatām) - blame; censure; च (ca) - and; अयशस्करीम् (ayaśaskarīm) - bringing infamy; producing disgrace;]
(You have done this rash act—why fasting unto death? Indeed, one who gives up the self goes down and attains blame and brings infamy.)
Why have you committed this rash act of fasting unto death? For truly, one who gives up his life descends to a lower state and receives blame and infamy. (03-240-2)
न हि कार्यविरुद्धेषु बह्वपायेषु कर्मसु। मूलघातिषु सज्जन्ते बुद्धिमन्तो भवद्विधाः ॥०३-२४०-३॥
na hi kāryaviruddheṣu bahvapāyeṣu karmasu. mūlaghātiṣu sajjante buddhimanto bhavadvidhāḥ ॥03-240-3॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; कार्यविरुद्धेषु (kāryaviruddheṣu) - opposed to the purpose; बह्वपायेषु (bahvapāyeṣu) - full of much danger; कर्मसु (karmasu) - in actions; मूलघातिषु (mūlaghātiṣu) - destructive at the root; सज्जन्ते (sajjante) - become attached; बुद्धिमन्तः (buddhimantaḥ) - the wise; भवद्विधाः (bhavadvidhāḥ) - of your kind;]
(Not indeed in actions opposed to the purpose, full of much danger, root-destructive, do the wise of your kind become attached.)
Indeed, people as wise as you do not become attached to actions that are opposed to the goal, filled with many dangers, and destructive at the root. (03-240-3)
नियच्छैतां मतिं राजन्धर्मार्थसुखनाशिनीम्। यशःप्रतापधैर्यघ्नीं शत्रूणां हर्षवर्धनीम् ॥०३-२४०-४॥
niyacchaitāṁ matiṁ rājan dharmārthasukhanaśinīm. yaśaḥ-pratāpa-dhairya-ghnīṁ śatrūṇāṁ harṣavardhanīm ॥03-240-4॥
[नियच्छ (niyaccha) - restrain; एताम् (etām) - this; मतिम् (matim) - mind; राजन् (rājan) - O king; धर्मार्थसुखनाशिनीम् (dharmārthasukhanaśinīm) - destroyer of righteousness, wealth, and happiness; यशःप्रतापधैर्यघ्नीम् (yaśaḥ-pratāpa-dhairya-ghnīm) - destroyer of fame, splendor, and courage; शत्रूणाम् (śatrūṇām) - of enemies; हर्षवर्धनीम् (harṣavardhanīm) - increaser of joy;]
(Restrain this mind, O king, destroyer of righteousness, wealth, and happiness, destroyer of fame, splendor, and courage, increaser of the enemies’ joy.)
O king, restrain this mind, which destroys righteousness, wealth, and happiness, destroys fame, splendor, and courage, and increases the joy of your enemies. (03-240-4)
श्रूयतां च प्रभो तत्त्वं दिव्यतां चात्मनो नृप। निर्माणं च शरीरस्य ततो धैर्यमवाप्नुहि ॥०३-२४०-५॥
śrūyatāṃ ca prabho tattvaṃ divyatāṃ cātmano nṛpa। nirmāṇaṃ ca śarīrasya tato dhairyam avāpnuhu॥03-240-5॥
[श्रूयतां (śrūyatām) - listen (imperative); च (ca) - and; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; तत्त्वं (tattvam) - the truth; दिव्यतां (divyatām) - divinity; च (ca) - and; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of the self; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; निर्माणं (nirmāṇam) - the creation; च (ca) - and; शरीरस्य (śarīrasya) - of the body; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; धैर्यम् (dhairyam) - steadfastness; अवाप्नुहि (avāpnuhu) - acquire (imperative);]
(Listen and, O lord, to the truth, divinity and also of the self, O king; the creation and also of the body; thereafter, steadfastness acquire.)
O king, O lord, listen to the truth, the divinity of the self, and the creation of the body; thereafter, acquire steadfastness. (03-240-5)
पुरा त्वं तपसास्माभिर्लब्धो देवान्महेश्वरात्। पूर्वकायश्च सर्वस्ते निर्मितो वज्रसञ्चयैः ॥०३-२४०-६॥
purā tvaṁ tapasāsmābhirlabdhaḥ devānmaheśvarāt। pūrvakāyaśca sarvaste nirmito vajrasañcayaiḥ ॥03-240-6॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; लब्धः (labdhaḥ) - obtained; देवान् (devān) - from the gods; महेश्वरात् (maheśvarāt) - from Maheśvara (the great lord, Śiva); पूर्वकायः (pūrvakāyaḥ) - former body; च (ca) - and; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - entire; ते (te) - of you; निर्मितः (nirmitaḥ) - formed; वज्रसञ्चयैः (vajrasañcayaiḥ) - by heaps of vajra (diamond or thunderbolt);]
(Formerly you were obtained by us by austerity from the gods and from Maheśvara; your former body, the entire one, was formed by heaps of vajra.)
Long ago, through our austerities, we obtained you from the gods and from the great lord Maheśvara; your previous entire body was fashioned from masses of vajra. (03-240-6)
अस्त्रैरभेद्यः शस्त्रैश्चाप्यधःकायश्च तेऽनघ। कृतः पुष्पमयो देव्या रूपतः स्त्रीमनोहरः ॥०३-२४०-७॥
astrair abhedyaḥ śastraiś cāpyadhaḥ-kāyaś ca te 'nagha| kṛtaḥ puṣpa-mayo devyā rūpataḥ strī-mano-haraḥ ॥03-240-7॥
[अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - by missiles; अभेद्यः (abhedyaḥ) - impenetrable; शस्त्रैः (śastraiḥ) - by weapons; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अधःकायः (adhaḥ-kāyaḥ) - with lower part of the body; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been made; पुष्पमयः (puṣpa-mayaḥ) - consisting of flowers; देव्याः (devyāḥ) - by the goddess; रूपतः (rūpataḥ) - in form; स्त्री (strī) - woman; मनोहरः (mano-haraḥ) - charming;]
(By missiles impenetrable, by weapons also, and with a lower part of the body; and your, O sinless, has been made consisting of flowers by the goddess, in form, woman, charming.)
O sinless one, impenetrable by missiles and weapons, your lower body has also been made by the goddess of flowers, taking the charming form of a woman. (03-240-7)
एवमीश्वरसंयुक्तस्तव देहो नृपोत्तम। देव्या च राजशार्दूल दिव्यस्त्वं हि न मानुषः ॥०३-२४०-८॥
evam-īśvara-saṃyuktaḥ tava dehaḥ nṛpa-uttama। devyā ca rāja-śārdūla divyaḥ tvaṃ hi na mānuṣaḥ ॥03-240-8॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; ईश्वरसंयुक्तः (īśvara-saṃyuktaḥ) - united with the Lord; तव (tava) - your; देहः (dehaḥ) - body; नृपोत्तम (nṛpa-uttama) - O best of kings; देव्याः (devyā) - by the goddess; च (ca) - and; राजशार्दूल (rāja-śārdūla) - O tiger among kings; दिव्यः (divyaḥ) - divine; त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; मानुषः (mānuṣaḥ) - (are) human;]
(Thus, united with the Lord, your body, O best of kings, by the goddess and O tiger among kings, (is) divine; you indeed (are) not human.)
Thus, united with the Lord, your body, O best of kings, is made divine by the goddess, O tiger among kings. You indeed are not human. (03-240-8)
क्षत्रियाश्च महावीर्या भगदत्तपुरोगमाः। दिव्यास्त्रविदुषः शूराः क्षपयिष्यन्ति ते रिपून् ॥०३-२४०-९॥
kṣatriyāś ca mahāvīryā bhagadattapurogamāḥ। divyāstra-viduṣaḥ śūrāḥ kṣapayiṣyanti te ripūn ॥03-240-9॥
[क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - warrior-nobles; च (ca) - and; महावीर्याः (mahāvīryāḥ) - of great strength; भगदत्तपुरोगमाः (bhagadattapurogamāḥ) - led by Bhagadatta; दिव्यास्त्रविदुषः (divyāstra-viduṣaḥ) - knowing divine weapons; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; क्षपयिष्यन्ति (kṣapayiṣyanti) - will destroy; ते (te) - your; रिपून् (ripūn) - enemies;]
(The warrior-nobles, and of great strength, led by Bhagadatta, knowing divine weapons, heroes, will destroy your enemies.)
The warrior-nobles of great strength, led by Bhagadatta and skilled in divine weapons, these heroes will destroy your enemies. (03-240-9)
तदलं ते विषादेन भयं तव न विद्यते। साह्यार्थं च हि ते वीराः सम्भूता भुवि दानवाः ॥०३-२४०-१०॥
tad alaṃ te viṣādena bhayaṃ tava na vidyate। sāhyārthaṃ ca hi te vīrāḥ sambhūtā bhuvi dānavāḥ॥03-240-10॥
[तत् (tat) - therefore; अलम् (alam) - enough; ते (te) - for you; विषादेन (viṣādena) - with despondency; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; तव (tava) - your; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; साह्यार्थम् (sāhyārtham) - for the purpose of help; च (ca) - and; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; सम्भूताः (sambhūtāḥ) - have arisen; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - Danavas (demons);]
(Therefore, enough for you with despondency; fear for you does not exist. For the purpose of help, indeed, your heroes, Danavas, have arisen on earth.)
Therefore, let there be no more despondency for you; you need not fear. Indeed, for helping you, your heroic Danavas have arisen on earth. (03-240-10)
भीष्मद्रोणकृपादींश्च प्रवेक्ष्यन्त्यपरेऽसुराः। यैराविष्टा घृणां त्यक्त्वा योत्स्यन्ते तव वैरिभिः ॥०३-२४०-११॥
bhīṣmadroṇakṛpādīṁś ca pravekṣyanty apare 'surāḥ। yair āviṣṭā ghṛṇāṁ tyaktvā yotsyante tava vairibhiḥ॥03-240-11॥
[भीष्मद्रोणकृपादीन् (bhīṣmadroṇakṛpādīn) - Bhiṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa and others; च (ca) - and; प्रवेक्ष्यन्ति (pravekṣyanti) - will enter; अपरे (apare) - others; असुराः (asurāḥ) - heroes; यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; आविष्टाः (āviṣṭāḥ) - possessed; घृणाम् (ghṛṇām) - compassion; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; योत्स्यन्ते (yotsyante) - they will fight; तव (tava) - with your; वैरिभिः (vairibhiḥ) - enemies;]
(Bhiṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa and others and will enter others, heroes, by whom possessed compassion having abandoned, they will fight with your enemies.)
Bhiṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa and others, and other warriors, will join battle. Influenced by them, abandoning compassion, they will fight against your enemies. (03-240-11)
नैव पुत्रान्न च भ्रातॄन्न पितॄन्न च बान्धवान्। नैव शिष्यान्न च ज्ञातीन्न बालान्स्थविरान्न च ॥०३-२४०-१२॥
naiva putrān na ca bhrātṝn na pitṝn na ca bāndhavān। naiva śiṣyān na ca jñātīn na bālān sthavirān na ca॥03-240-12॥
[न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; न (na) - not; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - fathers; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; बान्धवान् (bāndhavān) - relatives; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; शिष्यान् (śiṣyān) - disciples; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ज्ञातीन् (jñātīn) - kinsmen; न (na) - not; बालान् (bālān) - children; स्थविरान् (sthavirān) - elders; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and;]
(Not indeed (his) sons, not and brothers, not fathers, not and relatives; not indeed (his) disciples, not and kinsmen, not children, elders, not and.)
He (regards) not his sons or brothers, nor fathers or relatives; not even his disciples or kinsmen, nor children or elders. (03-240-12)
युधि सम्प्रहरिष्यन्तो मोक्ष्यन्ति कुरुसत्तम। निःस्नेहा दानवाविष्टाः समाक्रान्तेऽन्तरात्मनि ॥०३-२४०-१३॥
yudhi samprahariṣyanto mokṣyanti kurusattama। niḥsnehā dānavāviṣṭāḥ samākrānte'ntarātmani ॥03-240-13॥
[युधि (yudhi) - in battle; सम्प्रहरिष्यन्तः (samprahariṣyantaḥ) - about to fight; मोक्ष्यन्ति (mokṣyanti) - will be released; कुरुसत्तम (kurusattama) - O best of the Kurus; निःस्नेहाः (niḥsnehāḥ) - void of affection; दानवाविष्टाः (dānavāviṣṭāḥ) - possessed by demons; समाक्रान्ते (samākrānte) - when seized; अन्तरात्मनि (antarātmani) - in (their) inner self;]
(In battle, those about to fight will be released, O best of the Kurus; void of affection, possessed by demons, when (their) inner self is seized.)
O best of the Kurus, in battle, those about to fight will meet their end; being devoid of affection and possessed by demons, when their inner selves are overpowered. (03-240-13)
प्रहरिष्यन्ति बन्धुभ्यः स्नेहमुत्सृज्य दूरतः। हृष्टाः पुरुषशार्दूलाः कलुषीकृतमानसाः ॥ अविज्ञानविमूढाश्च दैवाच्च विधिनिर्मितात् ॥०३-२४०-१४॥
prahariṣyanti bandhubhyaḥ sneham utsṛjya dūrataḥ। hṛṣṭāḥ puruṣaśārdūlāḥ kaluṣīkṛtamānasāḥ॥ avijñānavimūḍhāś ca daivāc ca vidhinirmitāt॥03-240-14॥
[प्रहरिष्यन्ति (prahariṣyanti) (prahariṣyanti) - they will strike; बन्धुभ्यः (bandhubhyaḥ) (bandhubhyaḥ) - from kinsmen; स्नेहम् (sneham) (sneham) - affection; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; दूरतः (dūrataḥ) (dūrataḥ) - from afar; हृष्टाः (hṛṣṭāḥ) (hṛṣṭāḥ) - delighted; पुरुषशार्दूलाः (puruṣaśārdūlāḥ) (puruṣaśārdūlāḥ) - tiger-men; कलुषीकृतमानसाः (kaluṣīkṛtamānasāḥ) (kaluṣīkṛtamānasāḥ) - their minds made impure; अविज्ञानविमूढाः (avijñānavimūḍhāḥ) (avijñānavimūḍhāḥ) - deluded by lack of understanding; च (ca) (ca) - and; दैवात् (daivāt) (daivāt) - from fate; च (ca) (ca) - and; विधिनिर्मितात् (vidhinirmitāt) (vidhinirmitāt) - created by destiny;]
(They will strike, from kinsmen having abandoned affection from afar, delighted, tiger-men with minds made impure, deluded by lack of understanding and from fate and from destiny-created.)
Having abandoned affection for their kinsmen from afar, delighted, the valiant men, their minds rendered impure, will attack—deluded by lack of understanding, and by fate as determined by destiny. (3-240-14)
व्याभाषमाणाश्चान्योन्यं न मे जीवन्विमोक्ष्यसे। सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रमोक्षेण पौरुषे समवस्थिताः ॥ श्लाघमानाः कुरुश्रेष्ठ करिष्यन्ति जनक्षयम् ॥०३-२४०-१५॥
vyābhāṣamāṇāś cānyonyaṃ na me jīvan vimokṣyase। sarvaśastrāstramokṣeṇa pauruṣe samavasthitāḥ ॥ ślāghamānāḥ kuruśreṣṭha kariṣyanti janakṣayam ॥03-240-15॥
[व्याभाषमाणाः (vyābhāṣamāṇāḥ) - engaged in mutual conversation; च (ca) - and; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - with each other; न (na) - not; मे (me) - from me; जीवन् (jīvan) - alive; विमोक्ष्यसे (vimokṣyase) - you will escape; सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रमोक्षेण (sarvaśastrāstramokṣeṇa) - by the discharge of all weapons and missiles; पौरुषे (pauruṣe) - in manliness; समवस्थिताः (samavasthitāḥ) - being stationed; श्लाघमानाः (ślāghamānāḥ) - boasting; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - they will cause; जनक्षयम् (janakṣayam) - the destruction of people;]
(Engaged in mutual conversation and with each other, not from me alive you will escape. By the discharge of all weapons and missiles, in manliness being stationed, boasting, O best of Kurus, they will cause the destruction of people.)
While conversing with each other, none will escape alive from me. By the use of all sorts of weapons and missiles, as they take their stand in valor, boasting, O chief of Kurus, they will bring about the destruction of people. (03-240-15)
तेऽपि शक्त्या महात्मानः प्रतियोत्स्यन्ति पाण्डवाः। वधं चैषां करिष्यन्ति दैवयुक्ता महाबलाः ॥०३-२४०-१६॥
te'pi śaktyā mahātmānaḥ pratiyotsyanti pāṇḍavāḥ। vadhaṃ caiṣāṃ kariṣyanti daivayuktā mahābalāḥ॥03-240-16॥
[तेऽपि (te api) - they also; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - with power; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; प्रतियोत्स्यन्ति (pratiyotsyanti) - will fight against; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; वधं (vadham) - slaughter; च (ca) - and; एषां (eṣām) - of these; करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - they will do; दैवयुक्ता (daivayuktāḥ) - endowed by fate; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - mighty ones;]
(They also, with power, the great-souled ones, will fight against the Pāṇḍavas; and the mighty ones, endowed by fate, will accomplish the slaughter of these.)
They too, empowered and great-souled, will oppose the Pāṇḍavas; and the mighty ones favored by destiny will bring about the destruction of these. (03-240-16)
दैत्यरक्षोगणाश्चापि सम्भूताः क्षत्रयोनिषु। योत्स्यन्ति युधि विक्रम्य शत्रुभिस्तव पार्थिव ॥ गदाभिर्मुसलैः खड्गैः शस्त्रैरुच्चावचैस्तथा ॥०३-२४०-१७॥
daityarakṣogaṇāś cāpi sambhūtāḥ kṣatrayoniṣu। yotsyanti yudhi vikramya śatrubhis tava pārthiva॥ gadābhir musalaiḥ khaḍgaiḥ śastrair uccāvacais tathā॥03-240-17॥
[दैत्यरक्षोगणाः (daityarakṣogaṇāḥ) - companies of Daityas and Rākṣasas; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सम्भूताः (sambhūtāḥ) - arisen; क्षत्रयोनिषु (kṣatrayoniṣu) - among kṣatriya lineages; योत्स्यन्ति (yotsyanti) - will fight; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; विक्रम्य (vikramya) - having attacked; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - with enemies; तव (tava) - your; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; गदाभिः (gadābhiḥ) - with maces; मुसलैः (musalaiḥ) - with clubs; खड्गैः (khaḍgaiḥ) - with swords; शस्त्रैः (śastraiḥ) - with weapons; उच्चावचैः (uccāvacaiḥ) - various (high and low); तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Companies of Daityas and Rākṣasas also arisen among kṣatriya lineages will fight in battle having attacked with your enemies, O king, with maces, with clubs, with swords, and with weapons, various, also.)
O king, companies of Daityas and Rākṣasas that have also arisen among kṣatriya lineages will fight in battle, attacking with your enemies, using maces, clubs, swords, and various other weapons. (03-240-17)
यच्च तेऽन्तर्गतं वीर भयमर्जुनसम्भवम्। तत्रापि विहितोऽस्माभिर्वधोपायोऽर्जुनस्य वै ॥०३-२४०-१८॥
yacca te'ntargataṃ vīra bhayam arjuna-sambhavam। tatrāpi vihito'smābhir vadho'pāyo'rjunasya vai॥03-240-18॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; अन्तर्गतं (antargataṃ) - inward; वीर (vīra) - hero; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; अर्जुनसम्भवम् (arjuna-sambhavam) - arising from Arjuna; तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; वहितः (vihitaḥ) - devised; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; वधोपायः (vadha-upāyaḥ) - means of slaying; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Which and your inward, hero, fear arising from Arjuna; there also, by us, means of slaying Arjuna indeed has been devised.)
And, O hero, that inward fear of yours arising from Arjuna—there too, we have indeed devised a means for Arjuna's destruction. (03-240-18)
हतस्य नरकस्यात्मा कर्णमूर्तिमुपाश्रितः। तद्वैरं संस्मरन्वीर योत्स्यते केशवार्जुनौ ॥०३-२४०-१९॥
hatasya narakasyātmā karṇamūrtim upāśritaḥ। tad-vairaṃ saṃsmaran vīra yotsyate keśavārjunau॥03-240-19॥

(The spirit of the slain Naraka, having entered the form of Karṇa, remembering that enmity, O hero, will fight Keśava and Arjuna.)
The soul of the slain Naraka, having entered Karṇa's body and recalling that enmity, O hero, will fight against Keśava and Arjuna. (03-240-19)
स ते विक्रमशौण्डीरो रणे पार्थं विजेष्यति। कर्णः प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठः सर्वांश्चारीन्महारथः ॥०३-२४०-२०॥
sa te vikramaśauṇḍīro raṇe pārthaṃ vijeṣyati। karṇaḥ praharatāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ sarvāṃścārīnmahārathaḥ ॥03-240-20॥
[स (sa) - he; ते (te) - your; विक्रमशौण्डीरः (vikramaśauṇḍīraḥ) - valiant hero; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; पार्थं (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); विजेष्यति (vijeṣyati) - will conquer; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; प्रहरतां (praharatām) - among strikers; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; च (ca) - and; आरिन् (ārin) - enemies; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior;]
(He, your valiant hero, in battle will conquer Pārtha. Karṇa, the best among strikers, the great chariot-warrior, (will conquer) all enemies also.)
He, your valiant hero, will conquer Pārtha in battle. Karṇa, the best among warriors, and the great chariot fighter, will overcome all enemies. (03-240-20)
ज्ञात्वैतच्छद्मना वज्री रक्षार्थं सव्यसाचिनः। कुण्डले कवचं चैव कर्णस्यापहरिष्यति ॥०३-२४०-२१॥
jñātvaitacchadmanā vajrī rakṣārthaṃ savyasācinaḥ। kuṇḍale kavacaṃ caiva karṇasyāpahariṣyati॥03-240-21॥
[ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; एतच्छद्मना (etac-chadmanā) - by this device; वज्री (vajrī) - Vajra-wielder (Indra); रक्षा-अर्थं (rakṣā-artham) - for the purpose of protection; सव्यसाचिनः (savyasācinaḥ) - of Savyasācin (Arjuna); कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - ear-rings; कवचं (kavacam) - armor; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karṇa; अपहरिष्यति (apahariṣyati) - will take away;]
(Having known this, by this device, Vajrī for the protection of Savyasācin, the ear-rings and the armor indeed of Karṇa will take away.)
Having understood this scheme, Indra, for the sake of Arjuna’s protection, will indeed take away the ear-rings and armor from Karṇa. (03-240-21)
तस्मादस्माभिरप्यत्र दैत्याः शतसहस्रशः। नियुक्ता राक्षसाश्चैव ये ते संशप्तका इति ॥ प्रख्यातास्तेऽर्जुनं वीरं निहनिष्यन्ति मा शुचः ॥०३-२४०-२२॥
tasmād asmābhir apy atra daityāḥ śata-sahasraśaḥ। niyuktā rākṣasāś caiva ye te saṃśaptakā iti ॥ prakhyātās te 'rjunaṃ vīraṃ nihaniṣyanti mā śucḥ ॥03-240-22॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; अपि (api) - also; अत्र (atra) - here; दैत्याः (daityāḥ) - daityas; demons born of Diti; शतसहस्रशः (śata-sahasraśaḥ) - in hundreds of thousands; नियुक्ताः (niyuktāḥ) - appointed; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; demons; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ये (ye) - who; ते (te) - those; संशप्तकाः (saṃśaptakāḥ) - the pledged-to-death warriors; इति (iti) - thus; प्रख्याताः (prakhyātāḥ) - famous; ते (te) - they; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; निहनिष्यन्ति (nihaniṣyanti) - will kill; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucḥ) - grieve;]
(Therefore by us also here daityas in hundreds of thousands, appointed rākṣasas indeed, who those (called) saṃśaptakas thus, (are) famous. They Arjuna the hero will kill. Do not grieve.)
Therefore, also by us here, hundreds of thousands of Daityas and Rākṣasas have been appointed — those known as the 'Saṃśaptaka' warriors. They are famous; they will kill Arjuna, the hero. Do not grieve. (03-240-22)
असपत्ना त्वया हीयं भोक्तव्या वसुधा नृप। मा विषादं नयस्वास्मान्नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते ॥ विनष्टे त्वयि चास्माकं पक्षो हीयेत कौरव ॥०३-२४०-२३॥
asapatnā tvayā hīyaṃ bhoktavyā vasudhā nṛpa। mā viṣādaṃ nayasvāsmān naitat tvayy upapadyate॥ vinaṣṭe tvayi cāsmākaṃ pakṣo hīyeta kaurava॥03-240-23॥

(The earth undisputed by rivals is to be enjoyed by you, O king, not to be abandoned; do not lead us into despondency—this is not fitting for you. If you are destroyed, our side would also be diminished, O Kaurava. (03-240-23))
O king, the earth free of rivals is to be ruled and not abandoned by you. Do not make us despair—such conduct does not befit you. If you are lost, our cause would also be weakened, O Kaurava. (03-240-23)
गच्छ वीर न ते बुद्धिरन्या कार्या कथञ्चन। त्वमस्माकं गतिर्नित्यं देवतानां च पाण्डवाः ॥०३-२४०-२४॥
gaccha vīra na te buddhir anyā kāryā kathañcana. tvam asmākaṃ gatir nityaṃ devatānāṃ ca pāṇḍavāḥ ॥03-240-24॥
[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; वीर (vīra) - hero; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; अन्या (anyā) - other; कार्या (kāryā) - to be made; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्माकं (asmākaṃ) - our; गतिः (gatiḥ) - refuge; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; देवतานां (devatānāṃ) - of the gods; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - O Pāṇḍava;]
(Go, O hero, not your intellect, other should be made in any way. You (are) our refuge always and of the gods, O Pāṇḍava.)
Go, O hero. Let your mind not be otherwise in any way. You are always our refuge, as well as that of the gods, O Pāṇḍava. (03-240-24)

evam-uktvā pariṣvajya daityās taṃ rāja-kuñjaram। samāśvāsya ca durdharṣam putra-vad dānava-rṣabhāḥ ॥03-240-25॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; दैत्याः (daityāḥ) - the Daityas; तम् (tam) - him; राजकुञ्जरम् (rāja-kuñjaram) - royal elephant (epithet for a king or great person); समाश्वास्य (samāśvāsya) - having consoled; च (ca) - and; दुर्धर्षम् (durdharṣam) - unassailable; पुत्रवत् (putra-vat) - like a son; दानवर्षभाः (dānava-rṣabhāḥ) - bulls among the Dānavas (eminent Dānavas);]
(Thus having spoken, having embraced him, the Daityas, that royal elephant, having consoled and unassailable, like a son, the bulls among the Dānavas.)
Having spoken thus, the Daityas, eminent among the Dānavas, embraced that royal elephant-like one, consoled him—unassailable as he was—like a son. (03-240-25)
स्थिरां कृत्वा बुद्धिमस्य प्रियाण्युक्त्वा च भारत। गम्यतामित्यनुज्ञाय जयमाप्नुहि चेत्यथ ॥०३-२४०-२६॥
sthirāṃ kṛtvā buddhimasya priyāṇyuktvā ca bhārata। gamyatāmityanujñāya jayamāpnuhī cetyatha ॥03-240-26॥
[स्थिरां (स्थिराम्) (sthirāṃ (sthirām)) - firm; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - mind; अस्य (asya) - of him; प्रियाणि (priyāṇi) - dear (things); उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let him go; इति (iti) - thus; अनुज्ञाय (anujñāya) - having permitted; जयं (jayam) - victory; आप्नुहि (āpnuhī) - may you attain; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; अथ (atha) - then;]
(Having made firm his mind, having spoken his dear things, and having permitted thus "let him go", O Bhārata, and then, thus, "may you attain victory".)
After making his mind firm and having said his dear things, and having given permission, saying "let him go," O Bhārata, (it was also said) "may you attain victory". (03-240-26)
तैर्विसृष्टं महाबाहुं कृत्या सैवानयत्पुनः। तमेव देशं यत्रासौ तदा प्रायमुपाविशत् ॥०३-२४०-२७॥
tair-visṛṣṭaṃ mahābāhuṃ kṛtyā saivānayat-punaḥ। tam-eva deśaṃ yatrāsau tadā prāyam-upāviśat॥03-240-27॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; विसृष्टं (visṛṣṭam) - released; महाबाहुं (mahābāhuṃ) - the strong-armed; कृत्या (kṛtyā) - by the magical being; सा (sā) - she; एव (eva) - indeed; अनयत् (anayat) - brought; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - indeed; देशं (deśaṃ) - place; यत्र (yatra) - where; असौ (asau) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रायम् (prāyam) - fasting; उपाविशत् (upāviśat) - sat down;]
(By them released, the strong-armed (one), by the magical being, she indeed again brought; him indeed (to the) place where he then, fasting, sat down.)
She, the magical being, having been released by them, brought the strong-armed one again to the very place where he had earlier sat in fasting. (03-240-27)
प्रतिनिक्षिप्य तं वीरं कृत्या समभिपूज्य च। अनुज्ञाता च राज्ञा सा तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥०३-२४०-२८॥
pratinikṣipya taṁ vīraṁ kṛtyā samabhipūjya ca। anujñātā ca rājñā sā tatraivāntaradhīyata ॥03-240-28॥
[प्रतिनिक्षिप्य (pratinikṣipya) - having placed down; तं (taṁ) - him; वीरं (vīraṁ) - hero; कृत्या (kṛtyā) - by the (supernatural) female being; समभिपूज्य (samabhipūjya) - having duly honored; च (ca) - and; अनुज्ञाता (anujñātā) - being permitted; च (ca) - and; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; सा (sā) - she; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - just there; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(Having placed down him the hero, by the kṛtyā having duly honored, and being permitted by the king, she just there disappeared.)
After placing that hero down and duly honoring him, the kṛtyā, having received permission from the king, disappeared right there. (03-240-28)
गतायामथ तस्यां तु राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा। स्वप्नभूतमिदं सर्वमचिन्तयत भारत ॥ विजेष्यामि रणे पाण्डूनिति तस्याभवन्मतिः ॥०३-२४०-२९॥
gatāyām atha tasyāṃ tu rājā duryodhanas tadā। svapnabhūtam idaṃ sarvam acintayata bhārata ॥ vijeṣyāmi raṇe pāṇḍūn iti tasyābhavan matiḥ ॥03-240-29॥
[गतायाम् (gatāyām) - having gone; (when it had passed); अथ (atha) - then; तस्याम् (tasyām) - her (night's); तु (tu) - but; राजा (rājā) - king; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तदा (tadā) - at that time; स्वप्नभूतम् (svapnabhūtam) - as if a dream; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अचिन्तयत् (acintayat) - he thought; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; विजेष्यामि (vijeṣyāmi) - I shall conquer; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; पाण्डून् (pāṇḍūn) - the Pāṇḍavas; इति (iti) - thus; तस्य (tasya) - his; अभवन् (abhavan) - there was; (arose;) मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; (resolve;);]
(Having gone then, as she (the night) but, king Duryodhana at that time, as if a dream, this all, he thought, O Bhārata. "I shall conquer in battle the Pāṇḍavas"—thus, his thought arose.)
Then, when the night had passed, King Duryodhana at that time thought all this to have been as if a dream, O Bhārata. "I shall conquer the Pāṇḍavas in battle"—this thought arose in him. (03-240-29)
कर्णं संशप्तकांश्चैव पार्थस्यामित्रघातिनः। अमन्यत वधे युक्तान्समर्थांश्च सुयोधनः ॥०३-२४०-३०॥
karṇaṃ saṃśaptakāṃścaiva pārthasyāmitraghātinaḥ। amanyata vadhe yuktānsamarthāṃśca suyodhanaḥ ॥03-240-30॥
[कर्णं (karṇaṃ) - Karna (accusative); संशप्तकान् (saṃśaptakān) - the Saṃśaptakas (accusative); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha (Arjuna); अमित्रघातिनः (amitraghātinaḥ) - foe-slayers; अमন্যत (amanyata) - considered; वधे (vadhe) - for slaying; युक्तान् (yuktān) - engaged (accusative); समर्थान् (samarthān) - capable (accusative); च (ca) - and; सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana (nom.; another name for Duryodhana);]

Suyodhana considered Karna and the Saṃśaptakas, who were the foe-slayers of Pārtha (Arjuna), as being capable and ready for the act of slaying. (03-240-30)
एवमाशा दृढा तस्य धार्तराष्ट्रस्य दुर्मतेः। विनिर्जये पाण्डवानामभवद्भरतर्षभ ॥०३-२४०-३१॥
evam āśā dṛḍhā tasya dhārtarāṣṭrasya durmateḥ. vinirjaye pāṇḍavānām abhavad bharatarṣabha ॥03-240-31॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आशा (āśā) - hope; दृढा (dṛḍhā) - firm; तस्य (tasya) - of him; धार्तराष्ट्रस्य (dhārtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra's son; दुर्मतेः (durmateḥ) - of the evil-minded; विनिर्जये (vinirjaye) - in the defeat; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; अभवत् (abhavat) - there was; भरतरर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bhāratas;]
(Thus firm hope of his, of Dhritarashtra's evil-minded son, in the defeat of the Pāṇḍavas, was, O bull among the Bhāratas.)
Thus, O bull among the Bhāratas, firm hope arose in Dhritarashtra's evil-minded son regarding the defeat of the Pāṇḍavas. (03-240-31)
कर्णोऽप्याविष्टचित्तात्मा नरकस्यान्तरात्मना। अर्जुनस्य वधे क्रूरामकरोत्स मतिं तदा ॥०३-२४०-३२॥
karṇo'py āviṣṭacittātmā narakasyāntarātmanā. arjunasya vadhe krūrām akaroch matim tadā ॥03-240-32॥
[कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; अपि (api) - also; आविष्टचित्तात्मा (āviṣṭacittātmā) - having mind possessed; नरकस्य (narakasya) - of Naraka (hell) (here: demon Naraka); अन्तरात्मना (antarātmanā) - with (his) inner being; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; वधे (vadhe) - for the killing; क्रूराम् (krūrām) - cruel; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; मतिम् (matim) - intention; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Karṇa also, with his mind possessed and with the inner being of Naraka, then made a cruel intention for the killing of Arjuna.)

संशप्तकाश्च ते वीरा राक्षसाविष्टचेतसः। रजस्तमोभ्यामाक्रान्ताः फल्गुनस्य वधैषिणः ॥०३-२४०-३३॥
saṁśaptakāś ca te vīrā rākṣasāviṣṭacetasāḥ। rajastamobhyām ākrāntāḥ phalgunasya vadhaiṣiṇaḥ॥03-240-33॥
[संशप्तकाः (saṁśaptakāḥ) - oath-bound warriors; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - those; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; राक्षसाविष्टचेतसः (rākṣasāviṣṭacetasāḥ) - with minds possessed by demons; रजस्तमोभ्याम् (rajastamobhyām) - by passion and darkness; आक्रान्ताः (ākrāntāḥ) - overpowered; फल्गुनस्य (phalgunasya) - of Phalguna; वधैषिणः (vadhaiṣiṇaḥ) - wishing for the death;]
(Oath-bound warriors and those heroes, with minds possessed by demons, overpowered by passion and darkness, wishing for the death of Phalguna.)
Those oath-bound warriors, those heroes whose minds were possessed by demons, dominated by passion and darkness, were intent on killing Phalguna. (03-240-33)
भीष्मद्रोणकृपाद्याश्च दानवाक्रान्तचेतसः। न तथा पाण्डुपुत्राणां स्नेहवन्तो विशां पते ॥ न चाचचक्षे कस्मैचिदेतद्राजा सुयोधनः ॥०३-२४०-३४॥
bhīṣmadroṇakṛpādyāś ca dānavākrāntacetasaḥ। na tathā pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ snehavanto viśāṃ pate॥ na cācacakṣe kasmaicid etad rājā suyodhanaḥ॥03-240-34॥
[भीष्मद्रोणकृपाद्याश्च (bhīṣmadroṇakṛpādyāḥ ca) - Bhiṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa and others; and; दानवाक्रान्तचेतसः (dānavākrāntacetasaḥ) - whose minds were overpowered by (like) demons; न तथा (na tathā) - not so; पाण्डुपुत्राणां (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; स्नेहवन्तः (snehavantaḥ) - affectionate; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of men; न च (na ca) - and not; आचचक्षे (ācacakṣe) - did tell; कस्मैचिद् (kasmaicid) - to anyone; एतद् (etad) - this; राजा (rājā) - the king; सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana;]
(Bhiṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa and others whose minds were overpowered by demons; not so affectionate towards the sons of Pāṇḍu, O lord of men. And the king Suyodhana did not tell this to anyone.)
Bhiṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa and the rest, whose hearts were seized by a demonic influence, were not so affectionate towards the sons of Pāṇḍu, O king. And King Suyodhana did not disclose this matter to anyone. (03-240-34)
दुर्योधनं निशान्ते च कर्णो वैकर्तनोऽब्रवीत्। स्मयन्निवाञ्जलिं कृत्वा पार्थिवं हेतुमद्वचः ॥०३-२४०-३५॥
duryodhanaṁ niśānte ca karṇo vaikartano'bravīt। smayannivāñjaliṁ kṛtvā pārthivaṁ hetumadvacaḥ ॥03-240-35॥

(Duryodhana at the end of night and Karṇa, son of Vikartana, spoke as if smiling, having made folded hands to the king, meaningful words.)
At the end of night, Karṇa, the son of Vikartana, addressed Duryodhana, speaking meaningful words to the king with folded hands, as if smiling. (03-240-35)
न मृतो जयते शत्रूञ्जीवन्भद्राणि पश्यति। मृतस्य भद्राणि कुतः कौरवेय कुतो जयः ॥ न कालोऽद्य विषादस्य भयस्य मरणस्य वा ॥०३-२४०-३६॥
na mṛto jayate śatrūñjīvanbhadrāṇi paśyati। mṛtasya bhadrāṇi kutaḥ kauraveya kuto jayaḥ ॥ na kālo'dya viṣādasya bhayasya maraṇasya vā ॥03-240-36॥

परिष्वज्याब्रवीच्चैनं भुजाभ्यां स महाभुजः। उत्तिष्ठ राजन्किं शेषे कस्माच्छोचसि शत्रुहन् ॥ शत्रून्प्रताप्य वीर्येण स कथं मर्तुमिच्छसि ॥०३-२४०-३७॥
pariṣvajyābravīcchainaṃ bhujābhyāṃ sa mahābhujaḥ। uttiṣṭha rājankiṃ śeṣe kasmācchocasi śatruhan ॥ śatrūnpratāpya vīryeṇa sa kathaṃ martumicchasi ॥03-240-37॥

(Having embraced (him) with (his) two arms, he the mighty-armed, said to him: "Rise, O king, why do you lie (down), for what reason do you grieve, O destroyer of foes? Having subdued enemies with valor, how do you wish to die?" (03-240-37))

(Now or to you fear arisen having seen Arjuna's valor. Truly to you I promise I shall slay in battle Arjuna. (03-240-38))
Now, perhaps fear has arisen in you upon seeing Arjuna's valor. Truly I promise you, I shall slay Arjuna in battle. (03-240-38)
गते त्रयोदशे वर्षे सत्येनायुधमालभे। आनयिष्याम्यहं पार्थान्वशं तव जनाधिप ॥०३-२४०-३९॥
gate trayodaśe varṣe satyenāyudham ālabhe। ānayiṣyāmy ahaṃ pārthān vaśaṃ tava janādhipa॥03-240-39॥
[गते (gate) - having passed; त्रयोदशे (trayodaśe) - thirteenth; वर्षे (varṣe) - year; सत्येन (satyena) - truly; आयुधम् (āyudham) - weapon; आलभे (ālabhe) - I shall take up; आनयिष्यामि (ānayiṣyāmi) - I will bring; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; पार्थान् (pārthān) - the sons of Pṛthā (Pāṇḍavas); वशम् (vaśam) - subjection; तव (tava) - your; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O lord of men;]
(Having passed the thirteenth year, truly I shall take up weapons; I will bring the Pāṇḍavas into your subjection, O lord of men.)
When the thirteenth year has passed, I will truly take up weapons and bring the Pāṇḍavas under your control, O lord of men. (03-240-39)
एवमुक्तस्तु कर्णेन दैत्यानां वचनात्तथा। प्रणिपातेन चान्येषामुदतिष्ठत्सुयोधनः ॥ दैत्यानां तद्वचः श्रुत्वा हृदि कृत्वा स्थिरां मतिम् ॥०३-२४०-४०॥
evam uktas tu karṇena daityānāṃ vacanāt tathā। praṇipātena ca anyeṣām udatiṣṭhat suyodhanaḥ॥ daityānāṃ tad vacaḥ śrutvā hṛdi kṛtvā sthirāṃ matim॥03-240-40॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; तु (tu) - but; कर्णेन (karṇena) - by Karṇa; दैत्यानाम् (daityānām) - of the Daityas; वचनात् (vacanāt) - by (the) word (speech); तथा (tathā) - also; in that way; प्रणिपातेन (praṇipātena) - by obeisance; च (ca) - and; अन्येषाम् (anyeṣām) - of the others; उदतिष्ठत् (udatiṣṭhat) - rose (stood up); सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana (Duryodhana); दैत्यानाम् (daityānām) - of the Daityas; तत् (tat) - that; वचः (vacaḥ) - word (speech); श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having placed; स्थिरां (sthirām) - steady; मतिम् (matim) - mind (resolve);]
(Thus addressed by Karṇa and by the speech of the Daityas, having made obeisance to the others, Suyodhana stood up. Having heard that word of the Daityas, having placed it in his heart, with a steady mind.)
Thus, having been addressed by Karṇa and by the words of the Daityas, Suyodhana stood up after showing obeisance to the others. Having heard those words of the Daityas, he determined in his heart with a firm resolve. (03-240-40)
ततो मनुजशार्दूलो योजयामास वाहिनीम्। रथनागाश्वकलिलां पदातिजनसङ्कुलाम् ॥०३-२४०-४१॥
tato manujaśārdūlo yojayāmāsa vāhinīm। rathanāgāśvakalilāṃ padātijana-saṅkulām॥03-240-41॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मनुजशार्दूलः (manujaśārdūlaḥ) - tiger among men; योजयामास (yojayāmāsa) - he caused to be joined; वाहिनीम् (vāhinīm) - army; रथनागाश्वकलिलाम् (rathanāgāśvakalilām) - immersed with chariots, elephants and horses; पदातिजनसङ्कुलाम् (padātijana-saṅkulām) - crowded with foot-soldiers;]
(Then the tiger among men caused the army, immersed with chariots, elephants and horses, crowded with foot-soldiers, to be yoked.)

(By chariots, by elephants, by foot-soldiers and, appeared exceedingly crowded; when the dense clouds had departed in the time, the sky like unobscured at autumn.)
Crowded with chariots, elephants, and foot-soldiers, it appeared exceedingly dense, like the sky in autumn when the thick clouds have departed and it becomes clear. (03-240-43)
जयाशीर्भिर्द्विजेन्द्रैस्तु स्तूयमानोऽधिराजवत्। गृह्णन्नञ्जलिमालाश्च धार्तराष्ट्रो जनाधिपः ॥०३-२४०-४४॥
jayāśīrbhirdvijendraistu stūyamāno'dhirājavat। gṛhṇannañjalimālāśca dhārtarāṣṭro janādhipaḥ ॥03-240-44॥
