वसमानेषु पार्थेषु वने तस्मिन्महात्मसु। धार्तराष्ट्रा महेष्वासाः किमकुर्वन्त सत्तम ॥०३-२४१-१॥
vasamāneṣu pārtheṣu vane tasmin mahātmasu। dhārtarāṣṭrā maheṣvāsāḥ kim akurvanta sattama ॥03-241-1॥
[वसमानेषु (vasamāneṣu) - while dwelling; (loc. pl. pres. act. part. from vas-); पार्थेषु (pārtheṣu) - among the sons of Pr̥thā (Arjuna and his brothers); वने (vane) - in the forest; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - among those great-souled ones; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; महेष्वासाः (maheṣvāsāḥ) - great bowmen; किम् (kim) - what; अकुर्वन्त (akurvanta) - did (they) do; सत्तम (sattama) - best of men;]
(While the sons of Pr̥thā were dwelling in that forest, among those great-souled ones, what did the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the great bowmen, do, O best of men?)
O best of men, while the sons of Pr̥thā, those great-souled ones, were dwelling in that forest, what did the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the mighty bowmen, do? (03-241-1)
कर्णो वैकर्तनश्चापि शकुनिश्च महाबलः। भीष्मद्रोणकृपाश्चैव तन्मे शंसितुमर्हसि ॥०३-२४१-२॥
karṇo vaikartanaś cāpi śakuniś ca mahābalaḥ। bhīṣmadroṇakṛpāś caiva tan me śaṁsitum arhasi॥03-241-2॥
[कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; वैकर्तनः (vaikartanaḥ) - son of Vikartana (epithet of Karṇa); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Śakuni; च (ca) - and; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; भीष्मद्रोणकृपाः (bhīṣmadroṇakṛpāḥ) - Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; शंसितुम् (śaṁsitum) - to declare; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are worthy;]

Karṇa, the son of Vikartana, as well as the mighty Śakuni, Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and Kṛpa—please tell me about them.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवं गतेषु पार्थेषु विसृष्टे च सुयोधने। आगते हास्तिनपुरं मोक्षिते पाण्डुनन्दनैः ॥ भीष्मोऽब्रवीन्महाराज धार्तराष्ट्रमिदं वचः ॥०३-२४१-३॥
evaṃ gateṣu pārtheṣu visṛṣṭe ca suyodhane। āgate hāstinapuraṃ mokṣite pāṇḍunandanaiḥ ॥ bhīṣmo'bravīn mahārāja dhārtarāṣṭram idaṃ vacaḥ ॥03-241-3॥

(Thus, when the sons of Pṛthā had departed, and Suyodhana (Duryodhana) had been released, and when they had arrived at Hastinapura, liberated by the sons of Pāṇḍu, Bhīṣma spoke these words to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra.)
Thus, when the sons of Pṛthā had left, and Suyodhana had also been released, and when they had come to Hastinapura, having been freed by the sons of Pāṇḍu, Bhīṣma spoke these words to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (03-241-3)
उक्तं तात मया पूर्वं गच्छतस्ते तपोवनम्। गमनं मे न रुचितं तव तन्न कृतं च ते ॥०३-२४१-४॥
uktaṃ tāta mayā pūrvaṃ gacchatas te tapovanaṃ। gamanaṃ me na rucitaṃ tava tan na kṛtaṃ ca te॥03-241-4॥
[उक्तं (uktaṃ) - said; तात (tāta) - father; मया (mayā) - by me; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - before; गच्छतः (gacchataḥ) - while going; ते (te) - your; तपोवनम् (tapovanam) - hermitage; गमनं (gamanaṃ) - going; मे (me) - to me; न (na) - not; रुचितं (rucitaṃ) - pleasing; तव (tava) - to you; तत् (tat) - that; न (na) - not; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - by you;]
(Said, father, by me, before, while going, your, hermitage; going, to me, not, pleasing, to you, that, not, done, and, by you.)
O father, what I had said before, as you were leaving for the hermitage, the act of going was not pleasing to me, and that was not done by you as well. (03-241-4)
ततः प्राप्तं त्वया वीर ग्रहणं शत्रुभिर्बलात्। मोक्षितश्चासि धर्मज्ञैः पाण्डवैर्न च लज्जसे ॥०३-२४१-५॥
tataḥ prāptaṃ tvayā vīra grahaṇaṃ śatrubhirbalāt| mokṣitaścāsi dharmajñaiḥ pāṇḍavairna ca lajjase ॥03-241-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्राप्तं (prāptam) - obtained; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वीर (vīra) - hero; ग्रहणं (grahaṇam) - capturing; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - by enemies; बलात् (balāt) - by force; मोक्षितः (mokṣitaḥ) - released; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; धर्मज्ञैः (dharmajñaiḥ) - by those who know dharma; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; लज्जसे (lajjase) - you are ashamed;]
(Then, capturing by enemies by force was obtained by you, O hero; and you are released by those who know dharma, by the Pāṇḍavas, and you are not ashamed.)
Then you, O hero, were forcibly captured by your enemies; released by the righteous Pāṇḍavas, and yet you are not ashamed. (03-241-5)
प्रत्यक्षं तव गान्धारे ससैन्यस्य विशां पते। सूतपुत्रोऽपयाद्भीतो गन्धर्वाणां तदा रणात् ॥ क्रोशतस्तव राजेन्द्र ससैन्यस्य नृपात्मज ॥०३-२४१-६॥
pratyakṣaṃ tava gāndhāre sasainyasya viśāṃ pate| sūtaputro'payādbhīto gandharvāṇāṃ tadā raṇāt||krośatastava rājendra sasainyasya nṛpātmaja||03-241-6||
[प्रत्यक्षं (pratyakṣam) - directly; in front; before one’s eyes; तव (tava) - your; गान्धारे (gāndhāre) - O Gandhāra; ससैन्यस्य (sasainyasya) - with army; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of men; सूतपुत्रः (sūtaputraḥ) - the son of a charioteer; अपयात् (apayāt) - departed; fled; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - afraid; गन्धर्वाणां (gandharvāṇām) - of the Gandharvas; तदा (tadā) - then; रणात् (raṇāt) - from battle; क्रोशतः (krośataḥ) - shouting; crying aloud; तव (tava) - your; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; ससैन्यस्य (sasainyasya) - with army; नृपात्मज (nṛpātmaja) - O son of a king; prince;]
(Directly before your eyes, O Gandhāra, with army, O lord of men, the son of the charioteer departed afraid from the Gandharvas then from battle, shouting your, O king, with army, O prince.)
O Gandhāra, in the very presence of you and your army, O lord of men, the son of a charioteer fled in fear from the battle with the Gandharvas, while you and your entire force, O king, O prince, were crying out. (03-241-6)
दृष्टस्ते विक्रमश्चैव पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम्। कर्णस्य च महाबाहो सूतपुत्रस्य दुर्मतेः ॥०३-२४१-७॥
dṛṣṭas te vikramaś caiva pāṇḍavānāṃ mahātmanām। karṇasya ca mahābāho sūtaputrasya durmateḥ ॥03-241-7॥
[दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; ते (te) - by you; विक्रमः (vikramaḥ) - valor; चैव (ca eva) - and also; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the high-souled; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karṇa; च (ca) - and; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; सूतपुत्रस्य (sūtaputrasya) - of the charioteer’s son; दुर्मतेः (durmateḥ) - of the wicked-minded;]
(Seen by you also is the valor of the Pāṇḍavas, the high-souled; and of Karṇa, O mighty-armed, the son of the charioteer, the wicked-minded.)
You have also seen the valor of the high-souled Pāṇḍavas and of Karṇa, O mighty-armed one, the son of the charioteer, of wicked mind. (03-241-7)
न चापि पादभाक्कर्णः पाण्डवानां नृपोत्तम। धनुर्वेदे च शौर्ये च धर्मे वा धर्मवत्सल ॥०३-२४१-८॥
na cāpi pādabhāk karṇaḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ nṛpottama. dhanurvede ca śaurye ca dharme vā dharmavatsala ॥03-241-8॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; पादभाक् (pādabhāk) - recipient of a share; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; नृपोत्तम (nṛpottama) - O best of kings; धनुर्वेदे (dhanurvede) - in the science of archery; च (ca) - and; शौर्ये (śaurye) - in heroism; च (ca) - and; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; वा (vā) - or; धर्मवत्सल (dharmavatsala) - O lover of righteousness;]
(Not even as a recipient of a share, Karna of the Pāṇḍavas, O best of kings, in the science of archery and in heroism and in righteousness or, O lover of righteousness.)
O best of kings, O lover of righteousness, Karna was not even as a recipient of a share among the Pāṇḍavas, whether in the science of archery, in heroism, or in righteousness. (03-241-8)
तस्य तेऽहं क्षमं मन्ये पाण्डवैस्तैर्महात्मभिः। सन्धिं सन्धिविदां श्रेष्ठ कुलस्यास्य विवृद्धये ॥०३-२४१-९॥
tasya te'haṁ kṣamaṁ manye pāṇḍavaistairmahātmabhiḥ। sandhiṁ sandhividāṁ śreṣṭha kulasyāsya vivṛddhaye ॥03-241-9॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; ते (te) - by you; अहम् (aham) - I; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - proper; मन्ये (manye) - think; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by the great-souled; सन्धिम् (sandhim) - alliance; सन्धिविदाम् (sandhividām) - of those knowing alliances; श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha) - O best; कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the lineage; अस्य (asya) - of this; विवृद्धये (vivṛddhaye) - for prosperity;]
(Of him by you I proper think by the Pāṇḍavas, by those great-souled, alliance, O best of those knowing alliances, of the lineage of this for prosperity.)
O best of those who know alliances, I think making an alliance with those great-souled Pāṇḍavas, by you for him, is proper for the prosperity of this lineage. (03-241-9)
एवमुक्तस्तु भीष्मेण धार्तराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः। प्रहस्य सहसा राजन्विप्रतस्थे ससौबलः ॥०३-२४१-१०॥
evam-uktas tu bhīṣmeṇa dhārtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ। prahasya sahasā rājan vipratasthe sasaubalaḥ॥03-241-10॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; तु (tu) - but; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhīṣma; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; जनेश्वरः (janeśvaraḥ) - lord of people; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having laughed; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विप्रतस्थे (vipratasthe) - departed; स (sa) - he; सौबलः (saubalaḥ) - (with) Saubala (the son of Subala, Śakuni);]
(Thus having been spoken to by Bhīṣma, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, lord of people, but having laughed suddenly, O king, he departed with Saubala.)
Thus, O king, when Bhīṣma had said this, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, lord of the people, laughed suddenly and departed with Saubala (Śakuni). (03-241-10)
तं तु प्रस्थितमाज्ञाय कर्णदुःशासनादयः। अनुजग्मुर्महेष्वासा धार्तराष्ट्रं महाबलम् ॥०३-२४१-११॥
taṁ tu prasthitam ājñāya karṇa-duḥśāsanādayaḥ। anujagmur maheṣvāsā dhārtarāṣṭraṁ mahābalam॥03-241-11॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; तु (tu) - but; प्रस्थितम् (prasthitam) - departed; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having perceived; कर्णदुःशासनादयः (karṇa-duḥśāsanādayaḥ) - Karna, Duḥśāsana and others; अनुजग्मुः (anujagmuḥ) - followed; महेष्वासाः (maheṣvāsāḥ) - great archers; धार्तराष्ट्रम् (dhārtarāṣṭram) - the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - of great might;]
(Him but departed having perceived Karna, Duḥśāsana and others followed, great archers, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, of great might.)
But having perceived that he had departed, Karna, Duḥśāsana and the other great archers followed the mighty son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (03-241-11)
तांस्तु सम्प्रस्थितान्दृष्ट्वा भीष्मः कुरुपितामहः। लज्जया व्रीडितो राजञ्जगाम स्वं निवेशनम् ॥०३-२४१-१२॥
tāṃs tu samprasthitān dṛṣṭvā bhīṣmaḥ kuru-pitāmahaḥ। lajjayā vrīḍito rājan jagāma svaṃ niveśanam॥03-241-12॥
[ताम् (tām) - them; (accusative plural masculine pronoun); तु (tu) - but; सम्प्रस्थितान् (samprasthitān) - departed; having set forth; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; (proper noun, subject); कुरु-पितामहः (kuru-pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire of the Kuru(s); लज्जया (lajjayā) - with shame; व्रीडितः (vrīḍitaḥ) - ashamed; embarrassed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; (vocative); जगाम (jagāma) - went; स्वम् (svam) - his own; निवेशनम् (niveśanam) - residence; home;]
(But having seen them departed, Bhīṣma, the grandsire of the Kuru(s), with shame, being ashamed, O king, went to his own residence.)
But, O king, when Bhīṣma, the grandsire of the Kuru(s), saw them departing, he, feeling ashamed, went to his own residence. (03-241-12)
गते भीष्मे महाराज धार्तराष्ट्रो जनाधिपः। पुनरागम्य तं देशममन्त्रयत मन्त्रिभिः ॥०३-२४१-१३॥
gate bhīṣme mahārāja dhārtarāṣṭro janādhipaḥ। punarāgamya taṃ deśam amantrayata mantribhiḥ॥03-241-13॥
[गते (gate) - having gone; भीष्मे (bhīṣme) - Bhiṣma; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; (vocative) धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; जनाधिपः (janādhipaḥ) - lord of men; king; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आगम्य (āgamya) - having arrived; having come; तम् (tam) - that; देशम् (deśam) - place; region; अमन्त्रयत् (amantrayata) - consulted; deliberated; मन्त्रिभिः (mantribhiḥ) - with ministers;]
(Having gone Bhiṣma, O great king, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, lord of men, again having come to that region, consulted with ministers.)
O great king, when Bhiṣma had departed, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of men, having returned again to that place, consulted with his ministers. (03-241-13)
किमस्माकं भवेच्छ्रेयः किं कार्यमवशिष्यते। कथं नु सुकृतं च स्यान्मन्त्रयामास भारत ॥०३-२४१-१४॥
kim asmākaṁ bhavet śreyaḥ kiṁ kāryam avaśiṣyate. kathaṁ nu sukṛtaṁ ca syān mantrayāmāsa bhārata ॥03-241-14॥
[किम् (kim) (kim) - what; अस्माकं (asmākaṁ) (asmākaṁ) - of us; भवेत् (bhavet) (bhavet) - would be; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) (śreyaḥ) - highest good; किम् (kim) (kim) - what; कार्यम् (kāryam) (kāryam) - duty; अवशिष्यते (avaśiṣyate) (avaśiṣyate) - remains; कथम् (katham) (katham) - how; नु (nu) (nu) - indeed; सुकृतम् (sukṛtam) (sukṛtam) - good deed; च (ca) (ca) - and; स्यात् (syāt) (syāt) - might be; मन्त्रयाम् आस (mantrayām āsa) (mantrayām āsa) - deliberated; भारत (bhārata) (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(What for us would be the highest good, what duty remains, how indeed good might be, deliberated, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, he deliberated as to what would be the highest good for us, what duty still remains, and how indeed good might be accomplished. (03-241-14)

दुर्योधन निबोधेदं यत्त्वा वक्ष्यामि कौरव। श्रुत्वा च तत्तथा सर्वं कर्तुमर्हस्यरिंदम ॥०३-२४१-१५॥
duryodhana nibodhedaṃ yat-tvā vakṣyāmi kaurava। śrutvā ca tat-tathā sarvaṃ kartum arhasi ariṃdama ॥03-241-15॥
[दुर्योधन (duryodhana) - Duryodhana; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; इदं (idaṃ) - this; यत् (yat) - which; त्वा (tvā) - to you; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall say; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - in that manner; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
(Duryodhana, understand this which I shall say to you, O Kaurava. Having heard that, and in that manner, all to do you ought, O subduer of enemies.)
O Duryodhana, understand this which I am about to tell you, O Kaurava. Having heard it, you should do all that in the way I say, O subduer of enemies. (03-241-15)
तवाद्य पृथिवी वीर निःसपत्ना नृपोत्तम। तां पालय यथा शक्रो हतशत्रुर्महामनाः ॥०३-२४१-१६॥
tavādya pṛthivī vīra niḥsapatnā nṛpottama। tāṃ pālaya yathā śakro hataśatrur mahāmanāḥ ॥03-241-16॥
[तव (tava) - of you; अद्य (adya) - now; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; वीर (vīra) - O hero; निःसपत्ना (niḥsapatnā) - without rivals; नृपोत्तम (nṛpottama) - O best of kings; ताम् (tām) - her (the earth); पालय (pālaya) - govern; यथा (yathā) - as; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); हतशत्रुः (hataśatruḥ) - destroyer of enemies; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded;]
(Of you now the earth, O hero, without rivals, O best of kings. Her govern as Śakra, destroyer of enemies, great-minded.)
Now the earth is yours, O hero, without rivals, O best of kings. Rule her as Śakra (Indra), the destroyer of enemies and great-minded one, does. (03-241-16)

evam-uktas tu karṇena karṇaṃ rājā abravīt punaḥ। na kiñcid durlabhaṃ tasya yasya tvaṃ puruṣarṣabha ॥03-241-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; तु (tu) - but; कर्णेन (karṇena) - by Karṇa; कर्णम् (karṇam) - to Karṇa; राजा (rājā) - king; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; दुर्लभं (durlabhaṃ) - difficult to obtain; तस्य (tasya) - for him; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O bull among men;]
(Thus, having been spoken to by Karṇa, the king said again to Karṇa: "Nothing is difficult to obtain for him of whom you are, O bull among men." (03-241-17))
After Karṇa had spoken thus, the king said again to Karṇa: "Nothing is difficult to attain for him who has you, O best of men." (03-241-17)
सहायश्चानुरक्तश्च मदर्थं च समुद्यतः। अभिप्रायस्तु मे कश्चित्तं वै शृणु यथातथम् ॥०३-२४१-१८॥
sahāyaś cānuraktaś ca mad-arthaṃ ca samudyataḥ। abhiprāyas tu me kaścit taṃ vai śṛṇu yathā-tatham ॥03-241-18॥
[सहायः (sahāyaḥ) - helper; च (ca) - and; अनुरक्तः (anuraktaḥ) - affectionate; च (ca) - and; मदर्थं (mad-artham) - for my sake; च (ca) - and; समुद्यतः (samudyataḥ) - ready; अभिप्रायः (abhiprāyaḥ) - intention; तु (tu) - but; मे (me) - my; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; तं (tam) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; यथातथम् (yathā-tatham) - as it is;]
(Helper and affectionate and for my sake and ready; intention but my some; that indeed hear as it is.)
A helper, affectionate, prepared for my sake—there is some intention of mine; now hear it just as it is. (03-241-18)
राजसूयं पाण्डवस्य दृष्ट्वा क्रतुवरं तदा। मम स्पृहा समुत्पन्ना तां सम्पादय सूतज ॥०३-२४१-१९॥
rājasūyaṁ pāṇḍavasya dṛṣṭvā kratuvaraṁ tadā। mama spṛhā samutpannā tāṁ sampādaya sūtaja ॥03-241-19॥
[राजसूयं (rājasūyam) - royal consecration sacrifice; पाण्डवस्य (pāṇḍavasya) - of the son of Pāṇḍu; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; क्रतुवरं (kratu-varam) - the foremost (vara) of sacrifices (kratu); तदा (tadā) - then; मम (mama) - my; स्पृहा (spṛhā) - desire; समुत्पन्ना (samutpannā) - has arisen; तां (tām) - that; सम्पादय (sampādaya) - accomplish; सूतज (sūtaja) - O son of the charioteer;]
(Having seen the royal consecration sacrifice, the foremost of sacrifices, of the son of Pāṇḍu, then, my desire has arisen—accomplish that, O son of the charioteer.)
Seeing the great Rājasūya sacrifice performed by the son of Pāṇḍu, my desire was born; fulfill that desire for me, O son of the charioteer. (03-241-19)
एवमुक्तस्ततः कर्णो राजानमिदमब्रवीत्। तवाद्य पृथिवीपाला वश्याः सर्वे नृपोत्तम ॥०३-२४१-२०॥
evam-uktas tataḥ karṇo rājānam idam abravīt। tavādya pṛthivī-pālā vaśyāḥ sarve nṛpot-tama ॥03-241-20॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तव (tava) - your; आद्य (ādya) - today; पृथिवीपाला (pṛthivī-pālā) - the rulers of the earth; वश्याः (vaśyāḥ) - under control; सर्वे (sarve) - all; नृप उत्तम (nṛpo-ttama) - O best of kings;]
(Thus addressed, then Karna said this to the king: "Today, O best of kings, all rulers of the earth are under your control." (03-241-20))
Thus, when addressed so, Karna then said to the king: "Today, O best of kings, all the rulers of the earth are under your command." (03-241-20)
आहूयन्तां द्विजवराः सम्भाराश्च यथाविधि। सम्भ्रियन्तां कुरुश्रेष्ठ यज्ञोपकरणानि च ॥०३-२४१-२१॥
āhūyantāṃ dvijavarāḥ sambhārāś ca yathāvidhi. sambhriyantāṃ kuruśreṣṭha yajñopakaraṇāni ca ॥03-241-21॥
[आहूयन्तां (āhūyantāṃ) - let be invited; द्विजवराः (dvijavarāḥ) - excellent Brāhmaṇas; सम्भाराः (sambhārāḥ) - materials; च (ca) - and; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to rule; सम्भ्रियन्तां (sambhriyantāṃ) - let be assembled; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; यज्ञोपकरणानि (yajñopakaraṇāni) - sacrificial implements; च (ca) - and;]
(Let the excellent Brāhmaṇas be invited, and the materials according to rule; let the sacrificial implements also be assembled, O best of the Kurus.)
Invite the excellent Brāhmaṇas and gather all the materials as prescribed; assemble the sacrificial implements as well, O best of the Kurus. (03-241-21)
ऋत्विजश्च समाहूता यथोक्तं वेदपारगाः। क्रियां कुर्वन्तु ते राजन्यथाशास्त्रमरिंदम ॥०३-२४१-२२॥
ṛtvi-jaś ca samāhūtā yathoktaṃ vedapāragāḥ। kriyāṃ kurvantu te rājan yathāśāstram ariṃ-dama ॥03-241-22॥
[ऋत्विजः (ṛtvijaḥ) - the officiating priests; च (ca) - and; समाहूताः (samāhūtāḥ) - having been summoned; यथोक्तं (yathoktam) - as stated; वेदपारगाः (vedapāragāḥ) - those proficient in the Vedas; क्रियां (kriyām) - ritual act; कुर्वन्तु (kurvantu) - let them perform; ते (te) - they; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यथा (yathā) - according to; शास्त्रम् (śāstram) - scripture; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
(The officiating priests and those proficient in the Vedas, having been summoned as stated, let them perform the ritual act, O king, according to scripture, O subduer of enemies.)
O king, let the summoned officiating priests and those proficient in the Vedas perform the ritual according to the scriptures, O subduer of enemies. (03-241-22)
बह्वन्नपानसंयुक्तः सुसमृद्धगुणान्वितः। प्रवर्ततां महायज्ञस्तवापि भरतर्षभ ॥०३-२४१-२३॥
bahv-annapāna-saṁyuktaḥ susamṛddha-guṇānvitaḥ। pravartatāṁ mahā-yajñas tavāpi bharatarṣabha ॥03-241-23॥
[बहु-अन्न-पान-संयुक्तः (bahv-anna-pāna-saṁyuktaḥ) - endowed with much food and drink; सु-समृद्ध-गुण-अन्वितः (su-samṛddha-guṇānvitaḥ) - possessed of excellent prosperity and virtues; प्रवर्तताम् (pravartatām) - may commence; महायज्ञः (mahā-yajñaḥ) - great sacrifice; तव अपि (tava api) - of yours too; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among Bharatas;]
(Endowed with much food and drink, possessed of excellent prosperity and virtues, may the great sacrifice of yours too commence, O bull among Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, may your great sacrifice, endowed with plentiful food and drink and possessed of excellent prosperity and virtues, also begin. (03-241-23)
एवमुक्तस्तु कर्णेन धार्तराष्ट्रो विशां पते। पुरोहितं समानाय्य इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२४१-२४॥
evam-uktas tu karṇena dhārtarāṣṭro viśāṃ pate। purohitaṃ samānāyya idaṃ vacanam abravīt॥03-241-24॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; तु (tu) - but; कर्णेन (karṇena) - by Karṇa; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; विशाम् (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; पुरोहितम् (purohitam) - priest; समानाय्य (samānāyya) - having brought near; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Thus spoken by Karṇa but, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, O lord of men, having brought the priest near, this speech spoke.)
O lord of men, when Karṇa had thus spoken, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra brought the priest near and spoke these words. (03-241-24)
राजसूयं क्रतुश्रेष्ठं समाप्तवरदक्षिणम्। आहर त्वं मम कृते यथान्यायं यथाक्रमम् ॥०३-२४१-२५॥
rājasūyaṃ kratuśreṣṭhaṃ samāptavaradakṣiṇam। āhara tvaṃ mama kṛte yathānyāyaṃ yathākramam॥03-241-25॥
[राजसूयं (rājasūyaṃ) - the rājasūya (royal consecration sacrifice); क्रतुश्रेष्ठं (kratuśreṣṭham) - best among sacrifices; समाप्तवरदक्षिणम् (samāpta-varadakṣiṇam) - having completed, with excellent gifts (to priests); आहर (āhara) - bring; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मम (mama) - for me; कृते (kṛte) - for the sake (of), for; यथान्यायं (yathā-nyāyam) - according to justice; यथाक्रमम् (yathā-kramam) - according to proper order;]
(The rājasūya, best among sacrifices, having been completed with excellent gifts, bring (it), you, for me, according to justice, according to proper order.)
You perform the rājasūya, the best of sacrifices, having completed it with excellent gifts, for me, according to justice and proper order. (03-241-25)
स एवमुक्तो नृपतिमुवाच द्विजपुङ्गवः। न स शक्यः क्रतुश्रेष्ठो जीवमाने युधिष्ठिरे ॥ आहर्तुं कौरवश्रेष्ठ कुले तव नृपोत्तम ॥०३-२४१-२६॥
sa evam-ukto nṛpatim-uvāca dvija-puṅgavaḥ। na sa śakyaḥ kratu-śreṣṭhaḥ jīvamāne yudhiṣṭhire ॥ āhartuṃ kaurava-śreṣṭha kule tava nṛpa-uttama ॥03-241-26॥
[स (sa) - he; एवम् उक्तः (evam uktaḥ) - thus addressed; नृपतिम् उवाच (nṛpatim uvāca) - to the king spoke; द्विज पुङ्गवः (dvija puṅgavaḥ) - the foremost among twice-born; न स (na sa) - not that; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; क्रतु श्रेष्ठः (kratu śreṣṭhaḥ) - the greatest sacrifice; जीवमाने (jīvamāne) - while living; युधिष्ठिरे (yudhiṣṭhire) - Yudhiṣṭhira; आहर्तुं (āhartuṃ) - to perform; कौरव श्रेष्ठ (kaurava śreṣṭha) - O best of the Kauravas; कुले (kule) - in the family; तव (tava) - your; नृप उत्तम (nṛpa uttama) - O best among kings;]
(He, thus addressed, spoke to the king, the foremost among twice-born: Not that greatest sacrifice is possible, while Yudhiṣṭhira lives, to be performed, O best of the Kauravas, in your family, O best among kings.)
Thus addressed, the foremost among twice-born spoke to the king: "O best of the Kauravas, O best of kings, that greatest sacrifice cannot be performed in your family while Yudhiṣṭhira lives." (03-241-26)
दीर्घायुर्जीवति च वै धृतराष्ट्रः पिता तव। अतश्चापि विरुद्धस्ते क्रतुरेष नृपोत्तम ॥०३-२४१-२७॥
dīrghāyurjīvati ca vai dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ pitā tava। ataś cāpi viruddhas te kratureṣa nṛpottama ॥03-241-27॥
[दीर्घायुः (dīrghāyuḥ) - long-lived; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; च (ca) - and; वै (vai) - indeed; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; पिता (pitā) - father; तव (tava) - your; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; च अपि (ca api) - and also; विरुद्धः (viruddhaḥ) - hostile; ते (te) - to you; क्रतुः (kratuḥ) - sacrifice; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; नृप उत्तम (nṛpa-uttama) - O best of kings;]
(Long-lived lives and indeed Dhritarashtra your father; therefore and also hostile to you this sacrifice O best of kings.)
Dhritarashtra, your father, who is long-lived, is indeed still alive; therefore this sacrifice is also hostile to you, O best of kings. (03-241-27)
अस्ति त्वन्यन्महत्सत्रं राजसूयसमं प्रभो। तेन त्वं यज राजेन्द्र शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥०३-२४१-२८॥
asti tvan-yan-mahat-satram rājasūya-samaṃ prabho। tena tvaṃ yaja rājendra śṛṇu cedaṃ vaco mama ॥03-241-28॥
[अस्ति (asti) - there is; त्व (tva) - your; अन्यन् (anyan) - other; महत् (mahat) - great; सत्रं (satram) - sacrifice; राजसूयसमं (rājasūya-samam) - equal to the Rājasūya (royal consecration) sacrifice; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; तेन (tena) - by that; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; यज (yaja) - perform (the sacrifice); राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; मम (mama) - of mine;]
(There is for you another great sacrifice equal to the Rājasūya, O lord; by that you perform, O king, hear also this speech of mine.)
O king, there is for you another great sacrifice equal to the Rājasūya, O lord; perform that, and also listen to this my speech. (03-241-28)
य इमे पृथिवीपालाः करदास्तव पार्थिव। ते करान्सम्प्रयच्छन्तु सुवर्णं च कृताकृतम् ॥०३-२४१-२९॥
ya ime pṛthivī-pālāḥ karadās tava pārthiva। te karān samprayaĉchantu suvarṇaṃ ca kṛtākṛtam ॥03-241-29॥
[य (ya) - who; इमे (ime) - these; पृथिवीपालाः (pṛthivī-pālāḥ) - earth-guardians; kings; करदाः (karadāḥ) - tribute-payers; तव (tava) - your; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; ते (te) - they; करान् (karān) - tributes; सम्प्रयच्छन्तु (samprayaĉchantu) - let them present; सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; च (ca) - and; कृताकृतम् (kṛtākṛtam) - done and not done; accomplished and unaccomplished;]
(Who these earth-guardians, tribute-payers, your O king; they tributes let them present, gold and done and not done.)
O king, these kings who are your tribute-payers—let them present tributes and gold, both what is accomplished and unaccomplished. (03-241-29)
तेन ते क्रियतामद्य लाङ्गलं नृपसत्तम। यज्ञवाटस्य ते भूमिः कृष्यतां तेन भारत ॥०३-२४१-३०॥
tena te kriyatām adya lāṅgalaṁ nṛpasattama। yajñavāṭasya te bhūmiḥ kṛṣyatāṁ tena bhārata ॥03-241-30॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; ते (te) - your; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be made; अद्य (adya) - today; लाङ्गलं (lāṅgalaṁ) - plough; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - O best of kings; यज्ञवाटस्य (yajñavāṭasya) - of the sacrificial ground; ते (te) - your; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - land; कृष्यताम् (kṛṣyatām) - let it be cultivated; तेन (tena) - by that; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata);]
(By that, your plough let it be made today, O best of kings. Of the sacrificial ground, your land, let it be cultivated by that, O Bhārata.)
O best of kings, let your plough be made by that today. Let your land for the sacrificial ground be cultivated by that, O Bhārata. (03-241-30)
तत्र यज्ञो नृपश्रेष्ठ प्रभूतान्नः सुसंस्कृतः। प्रवर्ततां यथान्यायं सर्वतो ह्यनिवारितः ॥०३-२४१-३१॥
tatra yajño nṛpaśreṣṭha prabhūtānnaḥ susaṃskṛtaḥ। pravartatāṃ yathānyāyaṃ sarvato hyanivāritaḥ ॥03-241-31॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; नृपश्रेष्ठ (nṛpaśreṣṭha) - O best of kings; प्रभूतान्नः (prabhūtānnaḥ) - abundant with food; सुसंस्कृतः (susaṃskṛtaḥ) - well-prepared; प्रवर्तताम् (pravartatām) - let it be performed; यथान्यायम् (yathānyāyam) - according to rule; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - in every way; हि (hi) - indeed; अनिवारितः (anivāritaḥ) - unobstructed;]
(There sacrifice O best of kings abundant with food well-prepared let it be performed according to rule in every way indeed unobstructed.)
O best of kings, there let a sacrifice be performed, abundant with food and well-prepared, in every way according to rule, indeed unobstructed. (03-241-31)
एष ते वैष्णवो नाम यज्ञः सत्पुरुषोचितः। एतेन नेष्टवान्कश्चिदृते विष्णुं पुरातनम् ॥०३-२४१-३२॥
eṣa te vaiṣṇavo nāma yajñaḥ satpuruṣocitaḥ। etena neṣṭavān kaśc id ṛte viṣṇuṃ purātanam ॥03-241-32॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; ते (te) - to you; वैष्णवः (vaiṣṇavaḥ) - of Viṣṇu; relating to Viṣṇu; नाम (nāma) - named; by name; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; सत्पुरुषोचितः (satpuruṣocitaḥ) - fit for noble persons; एतेन (etena) - by this; नेष्टवान् (neṣṭavān) - has worshipped; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; ऋते (ṛte) - except; विष्णुं (viṣṇum) - Viṣṇu; पुरातनम् (purātanam) - the ancient;]
(This to you Viṣṇu-named sacrifice fit for noble persons; by this has worshipped anyone except Viṣṇu the ancient.)
This sacrifice named Viṣṇava, appropriate for noble persons, is for you. By this, no one has worshipped anyone except the ancient Viṣṇu. (03-241-32)
राजसूयं क्रतुश्रेष्ठं स्पर्धत्येष महाक्रतुः। अस्माकं रोचते चैव श्रेयश्च तव भारत ॥ अविघ्नश्च भवेदेष सफला स्यात्स्पृहा तव ॥०३-२४१-३३॥
rājasūyaṃ kratuśreṣṭhaṃ spardhatyeṣa mahākratuḥ। asmākaṃ rocate caiva śreyaśca tava bhārata॥ avighnaśca bhavedeṣa saphalā syātspr̥hā tava॥03-241-33॥
[राजसूयम् (rājasūyam) - royal consecration sacrifice; क्रतु-श्रेष्ठम् (kratu-śreṣṭham) - the greatest of sacrifices; स्पर्धति (spardhati) - rivals; contends; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; महाक्रतुः (mahākratuḥ) - great sacrifice; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - to us; रोचते (rocate) - is pleasing; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - welfare; highest good; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - to you; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अविघ्नः (avighnaḥ) - without obstacle; च (ca) - and; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; सफलः (saphalaḥ) - fruitful; successful; स्यात् (syāt) - may become; स्पृहा (spṛhā) - desire; aspiration; तव (tava) - your; ॥०३-२४१-३३॥ (॥03-241-33॥) - ;]
(This great sacrifice rivals the Rājasūya, the best of sacrifices; to us it is pleasing indeed, and also welfare to you, O Bhārata. May this be without obstacle, and may your aspiration become successful.)
This great sacrifice contends with the Rājasūya, the foremost of rituals. For us, it is indeed pleasing, and for you, O Bhārata, it is the highest good. May this proceed without obstacle, and may your wish be fulfilled. (03-241-33)
एवमुक्तस्तु तैर्विप्रैर्धार्तराष्ट्रो महीपतिः। कर्णं च सौबलं चैव भ्रातॄंश्चैवेदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२४१-३४॥
evam-uktas tu tair viprair dhārtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ। karṇaṃ ca saubalaṃ caiva bhrātṝṃś caiva idam abravīt ॥03-241-34॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; तु (tu) - but; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - by the Brāhmaṇas; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; च (ca) - and; सौबलम् (saubalam) - Saubala (son of Subala, i.e., Śakuni); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Thus having been addressed by those Brāhmaṇas, the king, son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, spoke this to Karṇa, Saubala, and also to his brothers.)
Having thus been addressed by the Brāhmaṇas, the king, son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, spoke as follows to Karṇa, Saubala, and his brothers. (03-241-34)
रोचते मे वचः कृत्स्नं ब्राह्मणानां न संशयः। रोचते यदि युष्माकं तन्मा प्रब्रूत माचिरम् ॥०३-२४१-३५॥
rocate me vacaḥ kṛtsnaṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ na saṃśayaḥ। rocate yadi yuṣmākaṃ tanmā prabrūta māciram ॥03-241-35॥
[रोचते (rocate) - pleases; मे (me) - to me; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnam) - entire; ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; रोचते (rocate) - pleases; यदि (yadi) - if; युष्माकं (yuṣmākaṃ) - to you; तत् (tat) - that; मा (mā) - not; प्रब्रूत (prabrūta) - tell; माचिरम् (māciram) - without delay;]
(Pleases to me speech entire of the Brāhmaṇas, not (is) doubt. Pleases if to you, that not, tell without delay.)
My entire speech pleases the Brāhmaṇas, there is no doubt. If it pleases you (also), then please tell me that without delay. (03-241-35)
एवमुक्तास्तु ते सर्वे तथेत्यूचुर्नराधिपम्। संदिदेश ततो राजा व्यापारस्थान्यथाक्रमम् ॥०३-२४१-३६॥
evam-uktās tu te sarve tathety ūcur narādhipam। saṁdideśa tato rājā vyāpārasthāny athākramaṁ ॥03-241-36॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तथेत् (tathet) - so (it is); ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they said; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - to the king; संदिदेश (saṁdideśa) - he instructed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - the king; व्यापारस्थानि (vyāpārasthāni) - places of activity; अथ (atha) - then; आक्रमम् (ākramaṁ) - in order;]
(Thus addressed, but all they said 'so (it is)' to the king. Then the king instructed the places of activity in order.)
When thus addressed, all of them said 'so it is' to the king; then the king gave instructions for the places of activity in due order. (03-241-36)
हलस्य करणे चापि व्यादिष्टाः सर्वशिल्पिनः। यथोक्तं च नृपश्रेष्ठ कृतं सर्वं यथाक्रमम् ॥०३-२४१-३७॥
halasya karaṇe cāpi vyādiṣṭāḥ sarvaśilpinaḥ। yathoktaṃ ca nṛpaśreṣṭha kṛtaṃ sarvaṃ yathākramam॥03-241-37॥
[हलस्य (halasya) - of the plough; करणे (karaṇe) - in the making; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; व्यादिष्टाः (vyādiṣṭāḥ) - were instructed; सर्वशिल्पिनः (sarvaśilpinaḥ) - all craftsmen; यथोक्तं (yathoktam) - as was said; च (ca) - and; नृपश्रेष्ठ (nṛpaśreṣṭha) - O best of kings; कृतं (kṛtam) - was done; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramam) - in due order;]
(Of the plough in the making and also all craftsmen were instructed; as was said and O best of kings, all was done in due order.)
All the craftsmen were instructed in the making of the plough, and, O best of kings, all was accomplished as previously directed and in proper order. (03-241-37)
