वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
ततस्तु शिल्पिनः सर्वे अमात्यप्रवराश्च ह। विदुरश्च महाप्राज्ञो धार्तराष्ट्रे न्यवेदयत् ॥०३-२४२-१॥
Then, however, all the artisans and chief ministers, together with Vidura, the most wise, informed the son of Dhritarashtra. (03-242-1)
सज्जं क्रतुवरं राजन्कालप्राप्तं च भारत। सौवर्णं च कृतं दिव्यं लाङ्गलं सुमहाधनम् ॥०३-२४२-२॥
O king, the best of sacrifices is prepared and has arrived at the proper time, O Bhārata. And a divine plough made of gold, endowed with great wealth, (was present). (03-242-2)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा नृपश्रेष्ठो धार्तराष्ट्रो विशां पते। आज्ञापयामास नृपः क्रतुराजप्रवर्तनम् ॥०३-२४२-३॥
O lord of people, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the foremost among kings, having heard this, ordered the performance of the great sacrifice. (03-242-3)
ततः प्रववृते यज्ञः प्रभूतान्नः सुसंस्कृतः। दीक्षितश्चापि गान्धारिर्यथाशास्त्रं यथाक्रमम् ॥०३-२४२-४॥
Then the sacrifice, with abundant food and well performed, was commenced. Gandhari also was consecrated in accordance with the scriptures, and in due order. (03-242-4)
प्रहृष्टो धृतराष्ट्रोऽभूद्विदुरश्च महायशाः। भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपः कर्णो गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥०३-२४२-५॥
Dhṛtarāṣṭra became gladdened; Vidura, the illustrious, and Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, and Gāndhārī, the renowned, also rejoiced. (03-242-5)
निमन्त्रणार्थं दूतांश्च प्रेषयामास शीघ्रगान्। पार्थिवानां च राजेन्द्र ब्राह्मणानां तथैव च ॥ ते प्रयाता यथोद्दिष्टं दूतास्त्वरितवाहनाः ॥०३-२४२-६॥
For the purpose of invitation, quick messengers were sent to the kings and brāhmaṇas, O king of kings. Those messengers, with swift vehicles, set out as directed. (03-242-6)
तत्र कञ्चित्प्रयातं तु दूतं दुःशासनोऽब्रवीत्। गच्छ द्वैतवनं शीघ्रं पाण्डवान्पापपूरुषान् ॥ निमन्त्रय यथान्यायं विप्रांस्तस्मिन्महावने ॥०३-२४२-७॥
There, Duḥśāsana said to a certain departed messenger, "Go quickly to the Dvaītavana forest to the Pāṇḍavas, the wicked men. Invite them as is proper, along with the Brāhmaṇas, in that great forest." (03-242-7)
स गत्वा पाण्डवावासमुवाचाभिप्रणम्य तान्। दुर्योधनो महाराज यजते नृपसत्तमः ॥०३-२४२-८॥
Having gone to the abode of the Pāṇḍavas and having bowed to them, he said: "Duryodhana, the great king and best among kings, is performing a sacrifice." (03-242-8)
स्ववीर्यार्जितमर्थौघमवाप्य कुरुनन्दनः। तत्र गच्छन्ति राजानो ब्राह्मणाश्च ततस्ततः ॥०३-२४२-९॥
O Kurunandana, when the mass of wealth acquired by one's own strength is attained, kings and brāhmaṇas gather there, coming from all directions. (03-242-9)
अहं तु प्रेषितो राजन्कौरवेण महात्मना। आमन्त्रयति वो राजा धार्तराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः ॥ मनोऽभिलषितं राज्ञस्तं क्रतुं द्रष्टुमर्हथ ॥०३-२४२-१०॥
But I, O king, have been sent by the great-souled Kaurava. King Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, the lord of people, invites you. You ought to come and see that sacrifice, which is the king's heartfelt desire. (03-242-10)
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा तच्छ्रुत्वा दूतभाषितम्। अब्रवीन्नृपशार्दूलो दिष्ट्या राजा सुयोधनः ॥ यजते क्रतुमुख्येन पूर्वेषां कीर्तिवर्धनः ॥०३-२४२-११॥
Then king Yudhiṣṭhira, having heard the messenger's words, the tiger among kings said: "It is by fortune that king Suyodhana, increasing the fame of his ancestors, performs the foremost of sacrifices." (03-242-11)
वयमप्युपयास्यामो न त्विदानीं कथञ्चन। समयः परिपाल्यो नो यावद्वर्षं त्रयोदशम् ॥०३-२४२-१२॥
We too will approach, but not at this time in any way. The agreement must be kept by us until the thirteenth year. (03-242-12)
श्रुत्वैतद्धर्मराजस्य भीमो वचनमब्रवीत्। तदा तु नृपतिर्गन्ता धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-२४२-१३॥
Bhīma, having heard this from Dharmarāja, spoke these words: "Now the king, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira, will go." (03-242-13)
अस्त्रशस्त्रप्रदीप्तेऽग्नौ यदा तं पातयिष्यति। वर्षात्त्रयोदशादूर्ध्वं रणसत्रे नराधिपः ॥०३-२४२-१४॥
When, after the thirteenth year, in the battle-sacrifice, the king will cause him to fall in the fire inflamed by weapons and missiles. (03-242-14)
यदा क्रोधहविर्मोक्ता धार्तराष्ट्रेषु पाण्डवः। आगन्तारस्तदा स्मेति वाच्यस्ते स सुयोधनः ॥०३-२४२-१५॥
When the Pāṇḍava releases the oblation of his anger among the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, then, O Suyodhana, let it be said to you, 'he is surely coming.' (03-242-15)
शेषास्तु पाण्डवा राजन्नैवोचुः किञ्चिदप्रियम्। दूतश्चापि यथावृत्तं धार्तराष्ट्रे न्यवेदयत् ॥०३-२४२-१६॥
But the remaining Pāṇḍavas, O king, did not say anything unpleasant. The messenger, too, told Dhārtarāṣṭra exactly what had occurred. (03-242-16)
अथाजग्मुर्नरश्रेष्ठा नानाजनपदेश्वराः। ब्राह्मणाश्च महाभागा धार्तराष्ट्रपुरं प्रति ॥०३-२४२-१७॥
Then the best of men, various lords of regions, and the highly fortunate brāhmaṇas went towards the city of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (03-242-17)
ते त्वर्चिता यथाशास्त्रं यथावर्णं यथाक्रमम्। मुदा परमया युक्ताः प्रीत्या चापि नरेश्वर ॥०३-२४२-१८॥
O king, they indeed honored (the guests) according to the scriptures, according to caste, and according to the proper order, with supreme joy and affection. (03-242-18)
धृतराष्ट्रोऽपि राजेन्द्र संवृतः सर्वकौरवैः। हर्षेण महता युक्तो विदुरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥०३-२४२-१९॥
Dhṛtarāṣṭra too, O king, being surrounded by all the Kauravas and filled with immense joy, addressed Vidura. (03-242-19)
यथा सुखी जनः सर्वः क्षत्तः स्यादन्नसंयुतः। तुष्येच्च यज्ञसदने तथा क्षिप्रं विधीयताम् ॥०३-२४२-२०॥
Just as every servant, when provided with food, is happy and satisfied, let it be quickly arranged so in the sacrificial hall. (03-242-20)
विदुरस्त्वेवमाज्ञप्तः सर्ववर्णानरिंदम। यथाप्रमाणतो विद्वान्पूजयामास धर्मवित् ॥०३-२४२-२१॥
But Vidura, thus having been ordered, O subduer of foes, honored people of all castes—being wise and a knower of dharma—in accordance with proper authority. (03-242-21)
भक्ष्यभोज्यान्नपानेन माल्यैश्चापि सुगन्धिभिः। वासोभिर्विविधैश्चैव योजयामास हृष्टवत् ॥०३-२४२-२२॥
He offered (them) various foods, drinks, garlands, perfumes, and garments with delight. (03-242-22)
कृत्वा ह्यवभृथं वीरो यथाशास्त्रं यथाक्रमम्। सान्त्वयित्वा च राजेन्द्रो दत्त्वा च विविधं वसु ॥ विसर्जयामास नृपान्ब्राह्मणांश्च सहस्रशः ॥०३-२४२-२३॥
Having duly completed the avabhṛtha bathing rite as prescribed by the śāstras and in due order, the heroic king, after conciliating and distributing various kinds of wealth, dismissed the kings and thousands of Brāhmaṇas. (03-242-23)
विसर्जयित्वा स नृपान्भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः। विवेश हास्तिनपुरं सहितः कर्णसौबलैः ॥०३-२४२-२४॥
After dismissing the kings, he, accompanied by his brothers and together with Karṇa and Saubala, entered Hastinapura. (03-242-24)
