tataḥ śayānaṃ kaunteyaṃ rātrau dvaitavane mṛgāḥ। svapnānte darśayāmāsurbāṣpakaṇṭhā yudhiṣṭhiram ॥03-244-2॥

Then, as Kunti's son Yudhishthira slept in the Dvaita forest at night, the deer—throats choked with tears—appeared to him at the end of his dream. (03-244-2)
तानब्रवीत्स राजेन्द्रो वेपमानान्कृताञ्जलीन्। ब्रूत यद्वक्तुकामाः स्थ के भवन्तः किमिष्यते ॥०३-२४४-३॥
tān abravīt sa rājendraḥ vepamānān kṛtāñjalīn। brūta yad vaktukāmāḥ stha ke bhavantaḥ kim iṣyate॥03-244-3॥
[तान् (tān) - them; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; स (sa) - he; राजेन्द्रः (rājendraḥ) - O king of kings; वेपमानान् (vepamānān) - trembling; कृताञ्जलीन् (kṛtāñjalīn) - with joined palms; ब्रूत (brūta) - say; यत् (yat) - what; वक्तुकामाः (vaktukāmāḥ) - desiring to say; स्थ (stha) - you are; के (ke) - who; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you all; किम् (kim) - what; इष्यते (iṣyate) - is desired;]
(He, O king of kings, spoke to them, trembling, with joined palms. Say what, desiring to speak, you are. Who are you all, what is desired?)
The king of kings addressed them, who were trembling with joined palms, saying: "Say whatever it is you wish to say. Who are you, and what is desired?" (03-244-3)
एवमुक्ताः पाण्डवेन कौन्तेयेन यशस्विना। प्रत्यब्रुवन्मृगास्तत्र हतशेषा युधिष्ठिरम् ॥०३-२४४-४॥
evam uktāḥ pāṇḍavena kaunteyena yaśasvinā। pratyabruvan mṛgās tatra hataśeṣā yudhiṣṭhiram॥03-244-4॥

वयं मृगा द्वैतवने हतशिष्टाः स्म भारत। नोत्सीदेम महाराज क्रियतां वासपर्ययः ॥०३-२४४-५॥
vayaṃ mṛgā dvaitavane hataśiṣṭāḥ sma bhārata। notsīdēma mahārāja kriyatāṃ vāsaparyayaḥ ॥03-244-5॥

भवन्तो भ्रातरः शूराः सर्व एवास्त्रकोविदाः। कुलान्यल्पावशिष्टानि कृतवन्तो वनौकसाम् ॥०३-२४४-६॥
bhavanto bhrātaraḥ śūrāḥ sarva evāstrakovidāḥ। kulānyalpāvaśiṣṭāni kṛtavanto vanaukasām॥03-244-6॥

बीजभूता वयं केचिदवशिष्टा महामते। विवर्धेमहि राजेन्द्र प्रसादात्ते युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-२४४-७॥
bījabhūtā vayaṃ kecid avaśiṣṭā mahāmate। vivardhemahi rājendra prasādāt te yudhiṣṭhira ॥03-244-7॥

तान्वेपमानान्वित्रस्तान्बीजमात्रावशेषितान्। मृगान्दृष्ट्वा सुदुःखार्तो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-२४४-८॥
tān veparamānān vitrastān bīja-mātra-avaśeṣitān | mṛgān dṛṣṭvā suduḥkhārto dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥03-244-8॥

(Having seen those deer, trembling, frightened, subsisting only on seeds, King Yudhiṣṭhira, the King of Dharma, afflicted by great sorrow.)
Seeing those deer, who were trembling, frightened, and reduced to subsisting only on seeds, Yudhiṣṭhira, the King of Dharma, was overwhelmed with great sorrow. (03-244-8)
तांस्तथेत्यब्रवीद्राजा सर्वभूतहिते रतः। तथ्यं भवन्तो ब्रुवते करिष्यामि च तत्तथा ॥०३-२४४-९॥
tāṃs tathety abravīd rājā sarva-bhūta-hite rataḥ। tathyaṃ bhavanto bruvate kariṣyāmi ca tat tathā ॥03-244-9॥
[तांस् (tāṃs) - them; तथेत्य् (tathety) - 'so be it', thus (having said); अब्रवीद् (abravīd) - said; राजा (rājā) - the king; सर्वभूतहिते (sarva-bhūta-hite) - towards the welfare of all beings; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; तथ्यम् (tathyaṃ) - truth; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you (respectfully); बृुवते (bruvate) - speak; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - in that way;]
(Them 'so be it' having said, the king, engaged in the welfare of all beings, said: 'Truth you speak; I shall do that in that way.')
The king, engaged in the welfare of all beings, replied to them, 'So be it. You speak the truth; I shall do that as you have said.' (03-244-9)
इत्येवं प्रतिबुद्धः स रात्र्यन्ते राजसत्तमः। अब्रवीत्सहितान्भ्रातॄन्दयापन्नो मृगान्प्रति ॥०३-२४४-१०॥
ityevaṃ pratibuddhaḥ sa rātryante rājasattamaḥ। abravītsahitānbhrātṝndayāpanno mṛgānprati ॥03-244-10॥
[इति एवम् (iti evam) - thus; in this way; प्रतिबुद्धः (pratibuddhaḥ) - having awakened; स (sa) - he; रात्र्यन्ते (rātryante) - at night’s end; राजसत्तमः (rājasattamaḥ) - the excellent king; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; सहितान् (sahitān) - along with; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; दयापन्नः (dayāpannaḥ) - filled with compassion; मृगान् प्रति (mṛgān prati) - regarding the deer;]
(Thus, having awakened, he at night’s end, the excellent king, spoke along with his brothers, filled with compassion, regarding the deer.)
Thus, at the end of the night, the excellent king, having awakened, spoke together with his brothers, being filled with compassion towards the deer. (03-244-10)
उक्तो रात्रौ मृगैरस्मि स्वप्नान्ते हतशेषितैः। तनुभूताः स्म भद्रं ते दया नः क्रियतामिति ॥०३-२४४-११॥
ukto rātrau mṛgair asmi svapnānte hataśeṣitaiḥ. tanubhūtāḥ sma bhadraṃ te dayā naḥ kriyatām iti ॥03-244-11॥
[उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken (to); रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; मृगैः (mṛgaiḥ) - by the deer; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; स्वप्नान्ते (svapnānte) - at the end of a dream; हतशेषितैः (hataśeṣitaiḥ) - by those left after being killed; तनुभूताः (tanubhūtāḥ) - having become thin (emaciated); स्म (sma) - indeed; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - good fortune; ते (te) - to you; दया (dayā) - compassion; नः (naḥ) - towards us; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Spoken (to) at night by the deer, I am, at the end of a dream, by those left after being killed, having become thin indeed. Good fortune to you. Compassion towards us let it be done, thus.)
At night, I was addressed by the deer that survived after being killed, at the end of a dream, having become emaciated: 'Good fortune to you—may compassion be shown to us.' (03-244-11)
ते सत्यमाहुः कर्तव्या दयास्माभिर्वनौकसाम्। साष्टमासं हि नो वर्षं यदेनानुपयुञ्ज्महे ॥०३-२४४-१२॥
te satyam āhuḥ kartavyā dayā asmābhir vanaukasām। sa-aṣṭamāsaṃ hi naḥ varṣaṃ yad ena anupayuñjmahe॥03-244-12॥
[ते (te) - they; सत्यं (satyam) - truly; आहुः (āhuḥ) - have said; कर्तव्या (kartavyā) - to be done; दया (dayā) - compassion; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; वनौकसाम् (vanaukasām) - of the forest-dwellers; साष्टमासं (sa-aṣṭa-māsaṃ) - with eight months; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us; वर्षं (varṣam) - one year; यत् (yat) - that; एनम् (enam) - this; अनुपयुञ्ज्महे (anupayuñjmahe) - we undertake;]
(They truly have said, to be done is compassion by us for the forest-dwellers. With eight months indeed, for us the year that this we undertake.)
They have truly said that we must show compassion to the forest-dwellers. We are now undertaking this eighth month of our year here. (03-244-12)
पुनर्बहुमृगं रम्यं काम्यकं काननोत्तमम्। मरुभूमेः शिरः ख्यातं तृणबिन्दुसरः प्रति ॥ तत्रेमा वसतीः शिष्टा विहरन्तो रमेमहि ॥०३-२४४-१३॥
punar bahu-mṛgaṃ ramyaṃ kāmyakaṃ kānana-uttamam। marubhūmeḥ śiraḥ khyātaṃ tṛṇa-bindu-saraḥ prati॥ tatra imā vasatīḥ śiṣṭā viharantaḥ ramemahi॥03-244-13॥
[पुनः (punar) - again; बहुमृगं (bahu-mṛgam) - abounding in many animals; रम्यं (ramyam) - beautiful; काम्यकं (kāmyakam) - Kāmyaka (name of forest); काननोत्तमम् (kānana-uttamam) - excellent among forests; मरुभूमेः (marubhūmeḥ) - of the desert; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; ख्यातम् (khyātam) - renowned; तृणबिन्दुसरः (tṛṇa-bindu-saraḥ) - Tṛṇabindu lake; प्रति (prati) - towards; तत्र (tatra) - there; इमा (imā) - these; वसतीः (vasatīḥ) - dwelling-places; शिष्टाः (śiṣṭāḥ) - remaining; विहरन्तः (viharantaḥ) - moving about; रमेमहि (ramemahi) - let us enjoy;]
(Again, abounding in many animals, beautiful Kāmyaka, the foremost of forests, of the desert, the head, renowned, towards Tṛṇabindu lake. There, these remaining dwelling-places, moving about, let us enjoy.)
Let us again go to the beautiful Kāmyaka forest, rich in many animals, the foremost of forests, lying at the head of the desert and famous for the Tṛṇabindu lake; there, let us enjoy ourselves moving among these remaining dwellings. (03-244-13)
ततस्ते पाण्डवाः शीघ्रं प्रययुर्धर्मकोविदाः। ब्राह्मणैः सहिता राजन्ये च तत्र सहोषिताः ॥ इन्द्रसेनादिभिश्चैव प्रेष्यैरनुगतास्तदा ॥०३-२४४-१४॥
tataste pāṇḍavāḥ śīghraṃ prayayurdharmakovidāḥ। brāhmaṇaiḥ sahitā rājanye ca tatra sahoṣitāḥ॥ indrasenādhibhiścaiva preṣyairanugatāstadā॥03-244-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - those; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; शीघ्रं (śīghram) - quickly; प्रययुः (prayayuḥ) - departed; धर्मकोविदाः (dharmakovidāḥ) - versed in dharma; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - with the Brāhmaṇas; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - joined; राजन्ये (rājanye) - among the princes; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; सहोषिताः (sahoṣitāḥ) - having dwelled together; इन्द्रसेनादिभिः (indrasenādibhiḥ) - with Indrasena and others; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रेष्यैः (preṣyaiḥ) - by the servants; अनुगताः (anugatāḥ) - followed; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then those Pāṇḍavas, versed in dharma, quickly departed, joined with the Brāhmaṇas, and having dwelled there among the princes together; indeed, then, they were followed by Indrasena and the other servants.)
Then the Pāṇḍavas, learned in dharma, quickly departed, accompanied by Brāhmaṇas, and having stayed there with the princes; at that time, they were followed by Indrasena and the other servants. (03-244-14)
ते यात्वानुसृतैर्मार्गैः स्वन्नैः शुचिजलान्वितैः। ददृशुः काम्यकं पुण्यमाश्रमं तापसायुतम् ॥०३-२४४-१५॥
te yātvānusṛtairmārgaiḥ svannaiḥ śucijalānvitaiḥ। dadṛśuḥ kāmyakaṃ puṇyamāśramaṃ tāpasāyutam॥03-244-15॥
[ते (te) - they; यात्वानुसृतैः (yātv-ānusṛtaiḥ) - by having gone-followed; मार्गैः (mārgaiḥ) - by paths; स्वन्नैः (svannaiḥ) - by their own; शुचिजलान्वितैः (śuci-jala-anvitaiḥ) - endowed with pure water; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; काम्यकं (kāmyakam) - Kāmyaka (name of forest); पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - holy; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; तापसायुतम् (tāpasāyutam) - accompanied by ascetics;]
(They, having gone by their own followed paths endowed with pure water, saw Kāmyaka, the holy hermitage accompanied by ascetics.)
After proceeding by their own well-trodden paths supplied with pure water, they saw the sacred Kāmyaka hermitage inhabited by ascetics. (03-244-15)
विविशुस्ते स्म कौरव्या वृता विप्रर्षभैस्तदा। तद्वनं भरतश्रेष्ठाः स्वर्गं सुकृतिनो यथा ॥०३-२४४-१६॥
viviśus te sma kauravyā vṛtā vipraṛṣabhaiḥ tadā। tad vanaṃ bharataśreṣṭhāḥ svargaṃ sukṛtino yathā॥03-244-16॥
[विविशुः (viviśus) - entered; ते (te) - they; स्म (sma) - indeed; कौरव्यास् (kauravyāḥ) - descendants of Kuru; वृता (vṛtāḥ) - accompanied; विप्रर्षभैः (vipraṛṣabhaiḥ) - by foremost Brāhmaṇas; तदा (tadā) - then; तत् (tat) - that; वनम् (vanaṃ) - forest; भरतश्रेष्ठाः (bharataśreṣṭhāḥ) - O best of Bharatas; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; सुकृतिनः (sukṛtinaḥ) - the virtuous; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(They indeed entered, O best of Bharatas, that forest then, the descendants of Kuru, accompanied by foremost Brāhmaṇas, as the virtuous (enter) heaven.)
O best of Bharatas, at that time, the Kauravas, accompanied by eminent Brāhmaṇas, entered that forest, just as the virtuous enter heaven. (03-244-16)
