vrīhidroṇaḥ parityaktaḥ kathaṃ tena mahātmanā। kasmai dattaś ca bhagavan vidhinā kena cāttha me ॥03-246-1॥

O venerable one, how did that great-souled one abandon the bucket of rice? To whom was it given, by what procedure, by whom, and what does it mean for me? (03-246-1)
प्रत्यक्षधर्मा भगवान्यस्य तुष्टो हि कर्मभिः। सफलं तस्य जन्माहं मन्ये सद्धर्मचारिणः ॥०३-२४६-२॥
pratyakṣadharmā bhagavān yasya tuṣṭo hi karmabhiḥ। saphalaṁ tasya janmāhaṁ manye saddharmacāriṇaḥ ॥03-246-2॥
[प्रत्यक्षधर्मा (pratyakṣadharmā) - whose nature is manifest righteousness; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Divine; यस्यम् (yasya) - of whom; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - is pleased; हि (hi) - indeed; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; सफलम् (saphalam) - fruitful; तस्य (tasya) - his; जन्म (janma) - birth; अहम् (aham) - I; मन्ये (manye) - think; सद्धर्मचारिणः (saddharmacāriṇaḥ) - of one who follows true dharma;]
(Whose nature is manifest righteousness, the Divine, of whom is pleased indeed by actions; fruitful his birth I think, of one who follows true dharma.)
I think the birth of one who follows true dharma, whose nature is manifest righteousness and whose actions indeed please the Divine, is fruitful. (03-246-2)

(One who lives by gathering grains fallen in the fields, virtuous-souled Mudgala of firm vow was, O king, in Kurukṣetra, truth-speaking, not envious.)
Mudgala, who lived by gathering fallen grains and was virtuous, firm in his vow, truth-speaking, and free from envy, resided in Kurukṣetra, O king. (3-246-3)
अतिथिव्रती क्रियावांश्च कापोतीं वृत्तिमास्थितः। सत्रमिष्टीकृतं नाम समुपास्ते महातपाः ॥०३-२४६-४॥
atithivratī kriyāvāṃś ca kāpotīṃ vṛttim āsthitaḥ। satram iṣṭīkṛtaṃ nāma samupāste mahātapāḥ॥03-246-4॥
[अतिथिव्रती (atithivratī) - one who observes the vow concerning guests; क्रियावान् (kriyāvān) - engaged in rituals; च (ca) - and; कापोतीं (kāpotīṃ) - like a pigeon; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - mode of life; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having adopted; सत्रम् (satram) - a session of sacrificial rites; इष्टीकृतम् (iṣṭīkṛtam) - offered as an iṣṭi (ritual act); नाम (nāma) - called; समुपास्ते (samupāste) - worships; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic;]
(One who observes the vow concerning guests, engaged in rituals, having adopted the mode of life like a pigeon, the great ascetic worships the sacrificial session called iṣṭīkṛta.)
The great ascetic, who observes the vow of receiving guests, performs rituals and lives like a pigeon, worships the sacrificial session known as iṣṭīkṛta. (03-246-4)
सपुत्रदारो हि मुनिः पक्षाहारो बभूव सः। कपोतवृत्त्या पक्षेण व्रीहिद्रोणमुपार्जयत् ॥०३-२४६-५॥
saputradāro hi muniḥ pakṣāhāro babhūva saḥ। kapotavṛttyā pakṣeṇa vrīhidrōṇam upārjayat ॥03-246-5॥
[सपुत्रदारः (saputradāraḥ) - with son and wife; हि (hi) - indeed; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; पक्षाहारः (pakṣāhāraḥ) - eating (only) on (certain) days; बभूव (babhūva) - became; सः (saḥ) - he; कपोतवृत्त्या (kapotavṛttyā) - with the way of a pigeon; पक्षेण (pakṣeṇa) - by (every) fortnight; व्रीहिद्रोणम् (vrīhidrōṇam) - a measure of rice; उपार्जयत् (upārjayat) - he earned;]
(With son and wife indeed, the sage became one who ate at intervals; with the way of a pigeon, by a fortnight he earned a measure of rice.)
The sage, along with his wife and son, lived eating only at intervals; like a pigeon, he would earn a measure of rice every fortnight. (03-246-5)
दर्शं च पौर्णमासं च कुर्वन्विगतमत्सरः। देवतातिथिशेषेण कुरुते देहयापनम् ॥०३-२४६-६॥
darśaṃ ca paurṇamāsaṃ ca kurvan vigatamatsaraḥ। devatātithiśeṣeṇa kurute dehayāpanam ॥03-246-6॥
[दर्शं (darśam) - new moon sacrifice; च (ca) - and; पौर्णमासं (paurṇamāsam) - full moon sacrifice; च (ca) - and; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - performing; विगतमत्सरः (vigatamatsaraḥ) - one from whom envy has departed; देवतातिथिशेषेण (devatātithiśeṣeṇa) - with what is left after offerings to gods and guests; कुरुते (kurute) - does; देहयापनम् (dehayāpanam) - maintenance of the body;]
(He performing the new moon and the full moon sacrifices, being free from envy, with what is left after offering to gods and guests, does maintenance of the body.)
Performing the new and full moon sacrifices, being free from envy, and sustaining his body with what remains after offering to the gods and guests, he maintains himself. (03-246-6)
तस्येन्द्रः सहितो देवैः साक्षात्त्रिभुवनेश्वरः। प्रत्यगृह्णान्महाराज भागं पर्वणि पर्वणि ॥०३-२४६-७॥
tasyendraḥ sahito devaiḥ sākṣāt tribhuvaneśvaraḥ। pratyagṛhṇān mahārāja bhāgaṃ parvaṇi parvaṇi ॥03-246-7॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; देवैः (devaiḥ) - with the gods; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; त्रिभुवनेश्वरः (tribhuvaneśvaraḥ) - the lord of the three worlds; प्रत्यगृह्णात् (pratyagṛhṇāt) - he accepted; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; भागम् (bhāgam) - the share; पर्वणि (parvaṇi) - at the festival; पर्वणि (parvaṇi) - at the festival;]
(Of him Indra, together with the gods, directly the lord of the three worlds, he accepted, O great king, the share at the festival at the festival.)
O great king, Indra—the lord of the three worlds—together with the gods directly accepted his share at every festival. (03-246-7)
स पर्वकालं कृत्वा तु मुनिवृत्त्या समन्वितः। अतिथिभ्यो ददावन्नं प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ॥०३-२४६-८॥
sa parvakālaṁ kṛtvā tu munivṛttyā samanvitaḥ। atithibhyo dadāv annaṁ prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā॥03-246-8॥
[स (sa) - he; पर्वकालं (parvakālam) - proper festive time; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; तु (tu) - but; मुनिवृत्त्या (munivṛttyā) - with the conduct of a sage; समन्वितः (samanvitaḥ) - endowed; अतिथिभ्यः (atithibhyaḥ) - to the guests; ददौ (dadau) - gave; अन्नं (annaṁ) - food; प्रहृष्टेन (prahṛṣṭena) - with gladdened; अन्तरात्मना (antarātmanā) - with inner self;]
(He, having performed at the festive time, but endowed with the conduct of a sage, gave food to the guests with gladdened inner self.)
He, following the conduct of a sage, observed the proper festive time and gladly offered food to the guests with a joyful heart. (03-246-8)
व्रीहिद्रोणस्य तदहो ददतोऽन्नं महात्मनः। शिष्टं मात्सर्यहीनस्य वर्धत्यतिथिदर्शनात् ॥०३-२४६-९॥
vrīhidroṇasya tad aho dadato'nnaṃ mahātmanaḥ। śiṣṭaṃ mātsaryahīnasya vardhaty-atithidarśanāt॥03-246-9॥
[व्रीहिद्रोणस्य (vrīhidroṇasya) - of a measure (droṇa) of rice; तत् (tat) - that; अहो (aho) - indeed; ददतः (dadataḥ) - of (one who) gives; अन्नं (annaṃ) - food; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; शिष्टं (śiṣṭam) - (that which is) left over; मात्सर्यहीनस्य (mātsaryahīnasya) - of the one free from jealousy; वर्धति (vardhati) - increases; अतिथिदर्शनात् (atithidarśanāt) - on account of the sight of a guest;]
(Of a droṇa of rice, that—indeed—food of the one who gives, of the great-souled one, (that which is) left over, of one free from jealousy, increases on account of the sight of a guest.)
Indeed, the food left from a droṇa of rice, given by a great-souled person who is free from jealousy, increases upon the arrival of a guest. (03-246-9)
तच्छतान्यपि भुञ्जन्ति ब्राह्मणानां मनीषिणाम्। मुनेस्त्यागविशुद्ध्या तु तदन्नं वृद्धिमृच्छति ॥०३-२४६-१०॥
tacchatāny api bhuñjanti brāhmaṇānāṃ manīṣiṇām। munes tyāgaviśuddhyā tu tad annaṃ vṛddhim ṛcchati॥03-246-10॥
[तच्छतानि (tacchatāni) - those hundreds (of gifts); अपि (api) - also; even; भुञ्जन्ति (bhuñjanti) - they enjoy; they consume; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brahmanas; मनीषिणाम् (manīṣiṇām) - of the wise; of the learned; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage; त्यागविशुद्ध्या (tyāgaviśuddhyā) - by the purity of renunciation; तु (tu) - but; however; तत् (tat) - that; अन्नम् (annam) - food; वृद्धिम् (vṛddhim) - growth; increase; ऋच्छति (ṛcchati) - attains; reaches;]
(Those hundreds, too, are enjoyed by the Brahmanas, the wise; but by the purity of the sage’s renunciation, that food attains increase.)
Those hundreds (of gifts) are indeed consumed by learned Brahmanas, but through the purity of the sage's renunciation, that food increases in merit. (03-246-10)
तं तु शुश्राव धर्मिष्ठं मुद्गलं संशितव्रतम्। दुर्वासा नृप दिग्वासास्तमथाभ्याजगाम ह ॥०३-२४६-११॥
taṁ tu śuśrāva dharmiṣṭhaṁ mudgalaṁ saṁśitavratam। durvāsā nṛpa digvāsās tam athābhyājagāma ha ॥03-246-11॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; तु (tu) - but; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - he heard; धर्मिष्ठं (dharmiṣṭham) - most righteous; मुद्गलं (mudgalam) - Mudgala; संशितव्रतम् (saṁśitavratam) - firm in vows; दुर्वासा (durvāsā) - Durvāsas; नृप (nṛpa) - king; दिग्वासाः (digvāsāḥ) - clad in space; तम् (tam) - him; अथ (atha) - then; अभ्याजगाम (abhyājagāma) - approached; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Him but he heard, the most righteous Mudgala, firm in vows; Durvāsas, O king, clad in space, then approached him indeed.)
But Durvāsas, O king, clad only in the directions, having heard of the most righteous and firmly-vowed Mudgala, then approached him. (03-246-11)
बिभ्रच्चानियतं वेषमुन्मत्त इव पाण्डव। विकचः परुषा वाचो व्याहरन्विविधा मुनिः ॥०३-२४६-१२॥
bibhraccāniyataṁ veṣamunmatta iva pāṇḍava। vikacaḥ paruṣā vāco vyāharan vividhā muniḥ ॥03-246-12॥
[बिभ्रत् (bibhrat) - bearing; च (ca) - and; अनियतं (aniyataṁ) - disordered; वेषम् (veṣam) - attire; उन्मत्त (unmatta) - mad; इव (iva) - like; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; विकचः (vikacaḥ) - shameless; परुषा (paruṣā) - harsh; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; व्याहरन् (vyāharan) - uttering; विविधा (vividhā) - various; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage;]
(Bearing disordered attire and like a madman, O Pāṇḍava, shameless, harsh words uttering various, the sage.)
O Pāṇḍava, the sage, clad in disordered garments and looking like a madman, shamelessly uttered various harsh words. (03-246-12)
अभिगम्याथ तं विप्रमुवाच मुनिसत्तमः। अन्नार्थिनमनुप्राप्तं विद्धि मां मुनिसत्तम ॥०३-२४६-१३॥
abhigamyātha taṃ vipramuvāca munisattamaḥ। annārthinamanuprāptaṃ viddhi māṃ munisattama ॥03-246-13॥
[अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; अथ (atha) - then; तं (taṃ) - him; विप्रम् (vipram) - the brāhmaṇa; उवाच (uvāca) - said; मुनिसत्तमः (munisattamaḥ) - the best among sages; अन्नार्थिनम् (annārthinam) - one who is desiring food; अनुप्राप्तं (anuprāptam) - who has come; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; माम् (mām) - me; मुनिसत्तम (munisattama) - O best among sages;]
(Having approached then, him, the brāhmaṇa, said the best among sages: The one desiring food, who has come, know me, O best among sages.)
Then, approaching him, the best of sages said to the brāhmaṇa: Know me to be the one who has come desiring food, O best among sages. (03-246-13)
स्वागतं तेऽस्त्विति मुनिं मुद्गलः प्रत्यभाषत। पाद्यमाचमनीयं च प्रतिवेद्यान्नमुत्तमम् ॥०३-२४६-१४॥
svāgataṃ te'stviti muniṃ mudgalaḥ pratyabhāṣata. pādyam ācamanīyaṃ ca pratica vedya annam uttamam ॥03-246-14॥
[स्वागतं (svāgatam) - welcome; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - thus; मुनिं (munim) - the sage (accusative); मुद्गलः (mudgalaḥ) - Mudgala (proper noun, subject); प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed; पाद्यम् (pādyam) - water for washing feet; आचमनीयं (ācamanīyam) - water for sipping; च (ca) - and; प्रतिवेद्य (prativaidya) - having informed (having mentioned); अन्नम् (annam) - food; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; ॥०३-२४६-१४॥ (॥03-246-14॥) -;]
("Welcome to you, let it be"—thus Mudgala addressed the sage. Water for washing feet and for sipping, and having informed about, excellent food.)
Mudgala addressed the sage, saying, "Welcome to you." He offered water for washing feet and sipping, and then informed him about the excellent food. (03-246-14)
प्रादात्स तपसोपात्तं क्षुधितायातिथिव्रती। उन्मत्ताय परां श्रद्धामास्थाय स धृतव्रतः ॥०३-२४६-१५॥
prādāts tapasopāttaṃ kṣudhittāyātithivratī। un-mattāya parāṃ śraddhām āsthāya sa dhṛtavvrataḥ॥03-246-15॥
[प्रादात् (prādāt) - he gave; तपसोपात्तं (tapasopāttam) - acquired by austerity; क्षुधिताय (kṣudhittāya) - to the hungry; अतिथि-व्रती (atithi-vratī) - who maintained the vow concerning guests; उन्मत्ताय (unmattāya) - to a mad person; परां (parām) - supreme; श्रद्धाम् (śraddhām) - faith; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; स (sa) - he; धृतव्रतः (dhṛtavrataḥ) - resolute in vows;]
(He gave what was acquired by austerity to the hungry, being observant of the guest-vow, to a mad person, having resorted to supreme faith, he, resolute in vows.)
He, resolute in his vows, observing the guest vow, gave what had been gained by austerity to a hungry madman, acting with supreme faith. (03-246-15)
ततस्तदन्नं रसवत्स एव क्षुधयान्वितः। बुभुजे कृत्स्नमुन्मत्तः प्रादात्तस्मै च मुद्गलः ॥०३-२४६-१६॥
tatas tad annaṃ rasavat sa eva kṣudhā-anvitaḥ। bubhuje kṛtsnam unmattaḥ prādāt tasmai ca mudgalaḥ ॥03-246-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् (tat) - that; अन्नम् (annam) - food; रसवत् (rasavat) - with taste; सः (saḥ) - he; एव (eva) - only; क्षुधा (kṣudhā) - with hunger; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - endowed; बुभुजे (bubhuje) - ate; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - all; उन्मत्तः (unmattaḥ) - excited; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; च (ca) - and; मुद्गलः (mudgalaḥ) - Mudgala;]
(Then that food with taste he, only endowed with hunger, ate all, excited; Mudgala also gave to him.)
Then, being hungry, he ate all that tasty food in his excitement; and Mudgala gave it to him as well. (03-246-16)
भुक्त्वा चान्नं ततः सर्वमुच्छिष्टेनात्मनस्ततः। अथानुलिलिपेऽङ्गानि जगाम च यथागतम् ॥०३-२४६-१७॥
bhuktvā cānnaṁ tataḥ sarvam ucchiṣṭenātmanas tataḥ। athānulilipe'ṅgāni jagāma ca yathāgatam ॥03-246-17॥
[भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; च (ca) - and; अन्नम् (annam) - food; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; उच्छिष्टेन (ucchiṣṭena) - with the remnants; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अथ (atha) - thereafter; अनुलिलिपे (anulilipe) - smeared; अङ्गानि (aṅgāni) - limbs; जगाम (jagāma) - went; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; आगतम् (āgatam) - (he had) come;]
(Having eaten food and then all with the remnants of himself then, thereafter he smeared the limbs and went as (he had) come.)
Having eaten the food, and then with his own leftovers, thereafter he smeared his limbs and went back just as he had come. (03-246-17)
एवं द्वितीये सम्प्राप्ते पर्वकाले मनीषिणः। आगम्य बुभुजे सर्वमन्नमुञ्छोपजीविनः ॥०३-२४६-१८॥
evaṃ dvitīye samprāpte parvakāle manīṣiṇaḥ। āgamya bubhuje sarvam annam uñchopajīvinaḥ॥03-246-18॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; द्वितीये (dvitīye) - in the second; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; पर्वकाले (parvakāle) - at the time of the festival; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; बुभुजे (bubhuje) - ate; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अन्नम् (annam) - food; उञ्छोपजीविनः (uñchopajīvinaḥ) - gleaner, one who lives by gleaning;]
(Thus, when the second (day) had arrived at the festival time, the wise, having come, ate all food, the gleaner;)
Thus, when the second day of the festival arrived, the wise gleaner came and ate all the food. (03-246-18)
निराहारस्तु स मुनिरुञ्छमार्जयते पुनः। न चैनं विक्रियां नेतुमशकन्मुद्गलं क्षुधा ॥०३-२४६-१९॥
nirāhāras tu sa munir uñcham ārjayate punaḥ। na ca enaṃ vikriyaṃ netum aśakan mudgalaṃ kṣudhā॥03-246-19॥
[निराहारः (nirāhāraḥ) - without food; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; उञ्छम् (uñcham) - gleanings; आर्जयते (ārjayate) - procures; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; विक्रियाम् (vikriyām) - disturbance; नेतुम् (netum) - to bring; अशकन् (aśakan) - was able; मुद्गलम् (mudgalam) - Mudgala (proper name); क्षुधा (kṣudhā) - by hunger;]
(Without food, but he, the sage, the gleanings procures again. Not and him disturbance to bring was able Mudgala by hunger.)
But he, the sage, having no food, again procured gleanings. Even then, hunger was not able to cause any disturbance to Mudgala. (03-246-19)
न क्रोधो न च मात्सर्यं नावमानो न सम्भ्रमः। सपुत्रदारमुञ्छन्तमाविवेश द्विजोत्तमम् ॥०३-२४६-२०॥
na krodho na ca mātsaryaṃ nāvamāno na sambhramaḥ. saputradhāramuñchantam āviveśa dvijottamam ॥03-246-20॥
[न (na) - not; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मात्सर्यम् (mātsaryam) - envy; न (na) - not; अवमानेः (avamānaḥ) - humiliation; न (na) - not; सम्भ्रमः (sambhramaḥ) - confusion; सपुत्रदारम् (saputradhāram) - with son and wife; उञ्छन्तम् (uñchantam) - practicing gleaning; आविवेश (āviveśa) - entered; द्विजोत्तमम् (dvijottamam) - the foremost Brahmin;]
(Not anger, nor envy, nor humiliation, nor confusion, with his son and wife, practicing gleaning, entered the foremost Brahmin.)
Anger did not enter the mind of the foremost Brahmin, nor envy, nor humiliation, nor confusion, as he lived a gleaner's life with his wife and son. (03-246-20)
तथा तमुञ्छधर्माणं दुर्वासा मुनिसत्तमम्। उपतस्थे यथाकालं षट्कृत्वः कृतनिश्चयः ॥०३-२४६-२१॥
tathā tam uñcha-dharmāṇaṃ durvāsā muni-sattamam। upatasthe yathā-kālaṃ ṣaṭ-kṛtvaḥ kṛta-niścayaḥ॥03-246-21॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तम् (tam) - him; उञ्छधर्माणं (uñcha-dharmāṇam) - one following uncha-dharma (the vow of gleaning); दुर्वासा (durvāsā) - Durvasa; मुनिसत्तमम् (muni-sattamam) - the foremost among sages; उपतस्थे (upatasthe) - approached; यथाकालं (yathā-kālam) - at the proper time; षट्कृत्वः (ṣaṭ-kṛtvaḥ) - six times; कृतनिश्चयः (kṛta-niścayaḥ) - having made up his mind;]
(Thus him, the one following uncha-dharma, Durvasa, the foremost among sages, approached at the proper time, six times, having made up his mind.)
Thus Durvasa, the foremost of sages who observed the vow of gleaning (uncha-dharma), approached him at the proper time, having resolved, six times. (03-246-21)
न चास्य मानसं किञ्चिद्विकारं ददृशे मुनिः। शुद्धसत्त्वस्य शुद्धं स ददृशे निर्मलं मनः ॥०३-२४६-२२॥
na cāsya mānasaṃ kiñcid vikāraṃ dadṛśe muniḥ। śuddhasattvasya śuddhaṃ sa dadṛśe nirmalaṃ manaḥ ॥03-246-22॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; मानसं (mānasaṃ) - mind; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - even a little; विकारं (vikāraṃ) - change; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - he saw; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; शुद्धसत्त्वस्य (śuddhasattvasya) - of pure-souled; शुद्धं (śuddhaṃ) - pure; स (sa) - he; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - saw; निर्मलं (nirmalaṃ) - spotless; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(Not and his mind even a little change saw the sage. Of the pure-souled, pure he saw spotless mind.)
The sage saw no change at all in his mind. He observed that the mind of the pure-souled one was pure and spotless. (03-246-22)
तमुवाच ततः प्रीतः स मुनिर्मुद्गलं तदा। त्वत्समो नास्ति लोकेऽस्मिन्दाता मात्सर्यवर्जितः ॥०३-२४६-२३॥
tam uvāca tataḥ prītaḥ sa munir mudgalaṃ tadā। tvat-samo nāsti loke 'smin dātā mātsarya-varjitaḥ ॥03-246-23॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - he said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; स (sa) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; मुद्गलं (mudgalaṃ) - Mudgala (proper noun); तदा (tadā) - at that time; त्वत्समः (tvat-samaḥ) - equal to you; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; लोकेऽस्मिन (loke 'smin) - in this world; दाता (dātā) - giver; मात्सर्यवर्जितः (mātsarya-varjitaḥ) - free from envy;]
(Him he said then, pleased, he, the sage, to Mudgala at that time: equal to you does not exist in this world, giver free from envy.)
Then, being pleased, that sage said to Mudgala, "There is no giver free from envy equal to you in this world." (03-246-23)
क्षुद्धर्मसञ्ज्ञां प्रणुदत्यादत्ते धैर्यमेव च। विषयानुसारिणी जिह्वा कर्षत्येव रसान्प्रति ॥०३-२४६-२४॥
kṣuddharmasañjñāṃ praṇudatyādatte dhairyameva ca। viṣayānusāriṇī jihvā karṣatyeva rasānprati ॥03-246-24॥
[क्षुद्धर्मसञ्ज्ञां (kṣuddharma-sañjñām) - the designation of hunger's nature; प्रणुदति (praṇudati) - pushes away; आदत्ते (ādatte) - takes up; धैर्यम् (dhairyam) - fortitude; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; विषयानुसारिणी (viṣayānusāriṇī) - following objects; जिह्वा (jihvā) - the tongue; कर्षति (karṣati) - drags; एव (eva) - indeed; रसान् (rasān) - flavors; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(The designation of hunger's nature pushes away, indeed takes up fortitude and. Following objects, the tongue indeed drags towards the flavors.)
By pushing away the awareness of hunger's nature, one takes up only fortitude; but the tongue, ever following its objects, constantly draws toward flavors. (03-246-24)
आहारप्रभवाः प्राणा मनो दुर्निग्रहं चलम्। मनसश्चेन्द्रियाणां चाप्यैकाग्र्यं निश्चितं तपः ॥०३-२४६-२५॥
āhāra-prabhavāḥ prāṇā mano durnigrahaṁ calam। manasaś cendriyāṇāṁ cāpy aikāgryaṁ niścitaṁ tapaḥ॥03-246-25॥
[आहारप्रभवाः (āhāra-prabhavāḥ) - arisen from food;, प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - life forces;, मनः (manaḥ) - the mind;, दुर्निग्रहम् (durnigraham) - difficult to control;, चलम् (calam) - unsteady;, मनसः (manasaḥ) - of the mind;, च (ca) - and;, इन्द्रियाणाम् (indriyāṇām) - of the senses;, च (ca) - and;, अपि (api) - also;, एकाग्र्यम् (aikāgryam) - one-pointedness;, निश्चितम् (niścitam) - determined;, तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity;]
(Arisen from food are the life forces, the mind (is) difficult to control, unsteady; of the mind and of the senses also, one-pointedness is determined to be austerity.)
The life forces arise from food; the mind is difficult to control and unsteady; and one-pointedness of the mind and senses is declared to be austerity. (03-246-25)
श्रमेणोपार्जितं त्यक्तुं दुःखं शुद्धेन चेतसा। तत्सर्वं भवता साधो यथावदुपपादितम् ॥०३-२४६-२६॥
śrameṇopārjitaṃ tyaktuṃ duḥkhaṃ śuddhena cetasā। tatsarvaṃ bhavatā sādho yathāvadupapāditam ॥03-246-26॥
[श्रमेण (śrameṇa) - by exertion; by effort; उपार्जितं (upārjitam) - acquired; obtained; त्यक्तुं (tyaktum) - to give up; to abandon; दुःखं (duḥkham) - painful; difficult; शुद्धेन (śuddhena) - by pure; by purified; चेतसा (cetasā) - mind; with mind; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; भवतா (bhavatā) - by you; साधो (sādho) - O virtuous one; O good man; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; appropriately; उपपादितम् (upapāditam) - performed; effected;]
(By effort acquired to give up is difficult with pure mind; that all by you, O good man, has been properly effected.)
It is difficult to give up what has been acquired by effort with a pure mind; yet, O good man, all this has been properly accomplished by you. (03-246-26)
प्रीताः स्मोऽनुगृहीताश्च समेत्य भवता सह। इन्द्रियाभिजयो धैर्यं संविभागो दमः शमः ॥०३-२४६-२७॥
prītāḥ smo'nugṛhītāś ca sametya bhavatā saha। indriyābhijayo dhairyaṃ saṃvibhāgo damaḥ śamaḥ ॥03-246-27॥
[प्रीताः (prītāḥ) - pleased; स्मः (smaḥ) - we are; अनुगृहीताः (anugṛhītāḥ) - favored; च (ca) - and; समेत्य (sametya) - having approached; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; सह (saha) - with; इन्द्रियाभिजयः (indriyābhijayaḥ) - victory over the senses; धैर्यं (dhairyaṃ) - steadfastness; संविभागः (saṃvibhāgaḥ) - sharing; दमः (damaḥ) - self-restraint; शमः (śamaḥ) - tranquility;]
(Pleased we are, favored and, having approached with you. Victory over the senses, steadfastness, sharing, self-restraint, tranquility.)
We are pleased and favored, having come together with you. Victory over the senses, steadfastness, sharing, self-restraint, and tranquility are present. (03-246-27)
दया सत्यं च धर्मश्च त्वयि सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम्। जितास्ते कर्मभिर्लोकाः प्राप्तोऽसि परमां गतिम् ॥०३-२४६-२८॥
dayā satyaṃ ca dharmaś ca tvayi sarvaṃ pratiṣṭhitam। jitās te karmabhir lokāḥ prāpto’si paramāṃ gatim ॥03-246-28॥
[दया (dayā) - compassion; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; च (ca) - and; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; च (ca) - and; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - is established; जिताः (jitāḥ) - conquered; ते (te) - your; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; असि (asi) - you are; परमां (paramāṃ) - the highest; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(Compassion, truth and righteousness and in you all is established. Conquered by your actions, worlds; attained you are the highest state.)
Compassion, truth, and righteousness are all established in you. By your actions, you have conquered the worlds and attained the highest state. (03-246-28)
अहो दानं विघुष्टं ते सुमहत्स्वर्गवासिभिः। सशरीरो भवान्गन्ता स्वर्गं सुचरितव्रत ॥०३-२४६-२९॥
aho dānaṃ vighuṣṭaṃ te sumahat svargavāsibhiḥ। saśarīro bhavān gantā svargaṃ sucaritavrata ॥03-246-29॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; दानं (dānam) - gift; विघुष्टं (vighuṣṭam) - proclaimed; ते (te) - by you; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; स्वर्गवासिभिः (svargavāsibhiḥ) - by the dwellers of heaven; सशरीरः (saśarīraḥ) - with the body; भवान् (bhavān) - you; गन्ता (gantā) - will go; स्वर्गं (svargam) - to heaven; सुचरितव्रत (sucarita-vrata) - one of virtuous conduct;]
(Indeed, the gift proclaimed by you, very great, by the dwellers of heaven. With the body you will go to heaven, one of virtuous conduct.)
Indeed, the great gift given by you has been proclaimed by the dwellers of heaven. You, of virtuous conduct, will go bodily to heaven. (03-246-29)
इत्येवं वदतस्तस्य तदा दुर्वाससो मुनेः। देवदूतो विमानेन मुद्गलं प्रत्युपस्थितः ॥०३-२४६-३०॥
ityevaṁ vadatas tasya tadā durvāsaso muneḥ। devadūto vimānena mudgalaṁ pratyupasthitaḥ ॥03-246-30॥
[इति एवम् (iti evam) - thus; in this manner; वदतः (vadatas) - speaking; of (him) speaking; तस्य (tasya) - of him; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; दुर्वाससः (durvāsasaḥ) - of Durvāsas; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage; देवदूतः (devadūtaḥ) - divine messenger; विमानेन (vimānena) - with a celestial chariot; मुद्गलम् (mudgalam) - Mudgala (name of person); प्रत्युपस्थितः (pratyupasthitaḥ) - approached; came to (presence of);]
(Thus, while he was speaking, then the divine messenger of Durvāsas the sage, with a celestial chariot, approached Mudgala.)
Thus, as he was speaking, at that time, the divine messenger of the sage Durvāsas arrived before Mudgala in a celestial chariot. (03-246-30)
हंससारसयुक्तेन किङ्किणीजालमालिना। कामगेन विचित्रेण दिव्यगन्धवता तथा ॥०३-२४६-३१॥
haṃsa-sārasayuktena kiṅkiṇī-jāla-mālinā। kāmagenavicitreṇa divya-gandhavatā tathā ॥03-246-31॥
[हंससारसयुक्तेन (haṃsa-sārasayuktena) - with joined swans and cranes; किङ्किणीजालमालिना (kiṅkiṇī-jāla-mālinā) - with a garland of rows of small bells; कामगेन (kāmagena) - that moves as desired; विचित्रेण (vicitreṇa) - wondrous; दिव्यगन्धवता (divya-gandhavatā) - having divine fragrance; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(With the one joined with swans and cranes, with a garland of rows of small bells, that moves as desired, wondrous, having divine fragrance, also.)
Also with the one adorned with rows of small bells, joined by swans and cranes, wondrous, moving as desired, and having divine fragrance. (03-246-31)
उवाच चैनं विप्रर्षिं विमानं कर्मभिर्जितम्। समुपारोह संसिद्धिं प्राप्तोऽसि परमां मुने ॥०३-२४६-३२॥
uvāca cainaṃ viprarṣiṃ vimānaṃ karmabhirjitam। samuparoha saṃsiddhiṃ prāpto'si paramāṃ mune ॥03-246-32॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - said; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - to him; विप्रर्षिं (viprarṣiṃ) - the sage among Brahmins; विमानं (vimānam) - celestial car; कर्मभि: (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; जितम् (jitam) - conquered; समुपारोह (samuparoha) - ascend; संसिद्धिं (saṃsiddhiṃ) - accomplishment; प्राप्त: (prāptaḥ) - (you have) attained; असि (asi) - are; परमां (paramām) - supreme; मुने (mune) - O sage;]
(He said and to him, the sage among Brahmins, "Ascend the celestial car conquered by actions; the supreme accomplishment you have attained, O sage.")
He said to him, the Brāhmana sage, "Ascend the celestial car earned by your deeds; you have achieved the highest accomplishment, O sage." (03-246-32)
तमेवंवादिनमृषिर्देवदूतमुवाच ह। इच्छामि भवता प्रोक्तान्गुणान्स्वर्गनिवासिनाम् ॥०३-२४६-३३॥
tam evaṃvādinam ṛṣir devadūtam uvāca ha। icchāmi bhavatā proktān guṇān svarganivāsinām॥03-246-33॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एवं-वादिनम् (evaṃ-vādinam) - thus-speaking; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - the seer; देव-दूतम् (deva-dūtam) - the divine messenger; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; प्रोक्तान् (proktān) - spoken; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; स्वर्ग-निवासिनाम् (svarga-nivāsinām) - of the dwellers of heaven;]
(Him thus-speaking the seer said to the divine messenger indeed. I desire the qualities of the dwellers of heaven spoken by you.)
The seer then said to the divine messenger, "I wish to hear from you the qualities of the dwellers of heaven." (03-246-33)
के गुणास्तत्र वसतां किं तपः कश्च निश्चयः। स्वर्गे स्वर्गसुखं किं च दोषो वा देवदूतक ॥०३-२४६-३४॥
ke guṇās tatra vasatāṃ kiṃ tapaḥ kaś ca niścayaḥ। svarge svargasukhaṃ kiṃ ca doṣo vā devadūtaka ॥03-246-34॥
[के (ke) - what; (plural); गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; तत्र (tatra) - there; वसताम् (vasatām) - of those dwelling; किं (kiṃ) - what; तपः (tapaḥ) - asceticism; कः (kaḥ) - what; च (ca) - and; निश्चयः (niścayaḥ) - resolve; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; स्वर्गसुखं (svargasukham) - heavenly happiness; किं (kiṃ) - what; च (ca) - and; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; वा (vā) - or; देवदूतक (devadūtaka) - O divine messenger;]
(What qualities there of those dwelling, what asceticism, what resolve and, in heaven heavenly happiness what and fault or O divine messenger.)
O divine messenger, what are the qualities of those dwelling there, what is their asceticism, what is their resolve, what is the heavenly happiness in heaven, and is there any fault? (03-246-34)
सतां सप्तपदं मित्रमाहुः सन्तः कुलोचिताः। मित्रतां च पुरस्कृत्य पृच्छामि त्वामहं विभो ॥०३-२४६-३५॥
satāṃ saptapadaṃ mitram āhuḥ santaḥ kulocitāḥ। mitratāṃ ca puraskṛtya pṛcchāmi tvām ahaṃ vibho॥03-246-35॥
[सतां (satām) - of the good; of virtuous people; सप्तपदं (saptapadam) - seven steps; मित्रम् (mitram) - friend; आहुः (āhuḥ) - (they) say; सन्तः (santaḥ) - good people; virtuous persons; कुलोचिताः (kulocitāḥ) - worthy of the family; appropriate to the family; मित्रतां (mitratām) - friendship; च (ca) - and; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - having placed in front; taking as primary; पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]
(Of the good, seven steps (taken together) (make) a friend, (they) say; good people worthy of the family. Friendship also having placed in front, I ask you, O lord.)
It is said that for virtuous people, even sharing seven steps makes one a friend; righteous persons who are worthy of their family believe so. Therefore, considering our friendship foremost, O lord, I ask you this question. (03-246-35)
यदत्र तथ्यं पथ्यं च तद्ब्रवीह्यविचारयन्। श्रुत्वा तथा करिष्यामि व्यवसायं गिरा तव ॥०३-२४६-३६॥
yad atra tathyaṃ pathyaṃ ca tad bravīhi avicārayan। śrutvā tathā kariṣyāmi vyavāsaṃ girā tava ॥03-246-36॥
[यद् (yad) - which; अत्र (atra) - here; तथ्यम् (tathyaṃ) - true; पथ्यम् (pathyaṃ) - wholesome; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - speak; अविचारयन् (avicārayan) - without hesitation; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तथा (tathā) - so; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; व्यवसायम् (vyavāsaṃ) - resolve; गिरा (girā) - by the word; तव (tava) - your;]
(Which here is true and wholesome, that speak without hesitation; having heard so, I will do the resolve by your word.)
Whatever here is true and beneficial, say that without hesitation; having heard it, I will act decisively according to your word. (03-246-36)
