The divine messenger said.
महर्षेऽकार्यबुद्धिस्त्वं यः स्वर्गसुखमुत्तमम्। सम्प्राप्तं बहु मन्तव्यं विमृशस्यबुधो यथा ॥०३-२४७-१॥
maharṣe'kāryabuddhistvaṁ yaḥ svargasukhamuttamam। samprāptaṁ bahu mantavyaṁ vimṛśasyabudho yathā ॥03-247-1॥
[महर्षे (maharṣe) - O great sage; अकार्यबुद्धि (akāryabuddhi) - one whose intellect is not directed toward improper actions; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; यः (yaḥ) - who; स्वर्गसुखम् (svargasukham) - heavenly happiness; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; सम्प्राप्तम् (samprāptam) - acquired; बहु (bahu) - much; मन्तव्यम् (mantavyam) - to be considered; विमृशस्य (vimṛśasya) - of one who deliberates; बुधः (budhaḥ) - wise man; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(O great sage, you whose intellect is not toward improper action, who has attained the supreme heavenly happiness, much is to be considered as a wise man deliberates, as.)
O great sage, you, whose intellect avoids improper acts and who has attained the highest heavenly happiness, ought to consider much—just as a wise man deliberates. (03-247-1)
उपरिष्टादसौ लोको योऽयं स्वरिति सञ्ज्ञितः। ऊर्ध्वगः सत्पथः शश्वद्देवयानचरो मुने ॥०३-२४७-२॥
upariṣṭādasau loko yo'yaṃ svariti sañjñitaḥ। ūrdhvagaḥ satpathaḥ śaśvaddevayānacaro mune ॥03-247-2॥
[उपरिष्टात् (upariṣṭāt) - above; from above; असौ (asau) - that; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; यः (yaḥ) - which; who; अयम् (ayam) - this; स्वरिति (svariti) - as svar (heaven); सञ्ज्ञितः (sañjñitaḥ) - named; designated; ऊर्ध्वगः (ūrdhvagaḥ) - going upward; upward-moving; सत्पथः (satpathaḥ) - righteous path; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - eternal; perpetual; देवयानचरः (devayānacaraḥ) - moving on the path of the gods; मुने (mune) - O sage;]
(From above, that world which is this is designated 'svar' (heaven); the upward-going, the righteous path, eternal, moving on the path of gods, O sage.)
O sage, that world above, which is called 'Svaḥ' (heaven), moves upward—a righteous, eternal path followed by the gods. (03-247-2)
नातप्ततपसः पुंसो नामहायज्ञयाजिनः। नानृता नास्तिकाश्चैव तत्र गच्छन्ति मुद्गल ॥०३-२४७-३॥
nātaptatapasaḥ puṁso nāma-hā-yajña-yājinaḥ। nānṛtā nāstikāścaiva tatra gacchanti mudgala ॥03-247-3॥
[न (na) - not; अतप्ततपसः (ataptatapasaḥ) - who have not performed austerities; पुंसः (puṁsaḥ) - of a man; न (na) - not; अमहायज्ञयाजिनः (amahayajñayājinaḥ) - who have not performed the great sacrifice; न (na) - not; अनृता (anṛtā) - untruthful (people); नास्तिकाः (nāstikāḥ) - atheists; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तत्र (tatra) - there; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; मुद्गल (mudgala) - Mudgala;]
(Not having performed austerities, of a man, not having performed the great sacrifice, not untruthful ones, atheists and indeed, there, go, Mudgala.)
O Mudgala, those who have not performed austerities, those who have not performed the great sacrifice, the untruthful and atheists, they do not go there. (03-247-3)
धर्मात्मानो जितात्मानः शान्ता दान्ता विमत्सराः। दानधर्मरताः पुंसः शूराश्चाहतलक्षणाः ॥०३-२४७-४॥
dharmātmāno jitātmānaḥ śāntā dāntā vimatsarāḥ। dāna-dharma-ratāḥ puṁsaḥ śūrāś cāhata-lakṣaṇāḥ॥03-247-4॥
[धर्मात्मानः (dharmātmānaḥ) - those whose soul is righteous; जितात्मानः (jitātmānaḥ) - those who have conquered themselves; शान्ताः (śāntāḥ) - calm; दान्ताः (dāntāḥ) - self-controlled; विमत्सराः (vimatsarāḥ) - free from envy; दानधर्मरताः (dāna-dharma-ratāḥ) - delighted in charity and righteousness; पुंसः (puṁsaḥ) - of the man; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - valiant; च (ca) - and; अहतलक्षणाः (ahata-lakṣaṇāḥ) - those of unblemished marks;]
(Those whose soul is righteous, who have conquered themselves, calm, self-controlled, free from envy, delighted in charity and righteousness, of the man, valiant, and those of unblemished marks.)
Righteous in soul, self-conquered, calm, self-controlled, free from envy, devoted to charity and virtue, valiant, and marked by unblemished qualities are the characteristics of a man. (03-247-4)
तत्र गच्छन्ति कर्माग्र्यं कृत्वा शमदमात्मकम्। लोकान्पुण्यकृतां ब्रह्मन्सद्भिरासेवितान्नृभिः ॥०३-२४७-५॥
tatra gacchanti karmāgryaṃ kṛtvā śamadamātmakam। lokān puṇyakṛtāṃ brahman sadbhir āsevitān nṛbhiḥ ॥03-247-5॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - they go; कर्माग्र्यं (karmāgryam) - highest (excellent) action; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; शमदमात्मकम् (śamadamātmakam) - consisting of tranquility and self-control; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; पुण्यकृताम् (puṇyakṛtām) - of the doers of merit; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; सद्भिः (sadbhih) - by the good; आसेवितान् (āsevitān) - attended (resorted to); नृभिः (nṛbhiḥ) - by men;]
(There they go, having performed the highest action, consisting of tranquility and self-control; (to) worlds of the doers of merit, O Brahman, attended by the good by men.)
There, having performed the highest actions involving tranquility and self-control, they go, O Brahman, to the worlds of the virtuous, which are frequented by good men. (03-247-5)
देवाः साध्यास्तथा विश्वे मरुतश्च महर्षिभिः। यामा धामाश्च मौद्गल्य गन्धर्वाप्सरसस्तथा ॥०३-२४७-६॥
devāḥ sādhyās tathā viśve marutaś ca maharṣibhiḥ। yāmā dhāmāś ca maudgalya gandharvāpsarasas tathā ॥03-247-6॥
[देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; साध्याः (sādhyāḥ) - Sādhyas (a class of deities); तथा (tathā) - so; विश्वे (viśve) - Viśve (all); मरुतश्च (marutaś ca) - and Maruts; महर्षिभिः (maharṣibhiḥ) - with great sages; यामा (yāmā) - Yamas; धामाश्च (dhāmāś ca) - and Dhāmas (classes of celestial beings); मौद्गल्य (maudgalya) - O Maudgalya; गन्धर्वाप्सरसस्तथा (gandharvāpsarasas tathā) - so too the Gandharvas and Apsarases;]
(gods; Sādhyas; so; Viśve; and Maruts; with great sages; Yamas; and Dhāmas; O Maudgalya; so too the Gandharvas and Apsarases;)
The gods, the Sādhyas, likewise all the Viśve, the Maruts together with great sages, the Yamas, the Dhāmas, O Maudgalya, and likewise the Gandharvas and Apsarases. (03-247-6)
एषां देवनिकायानां पृथक्पृथगनेकशः। भास्वन्तः कामसम्पन्ना लोकास्तेजोमयाः शुभाः ॥०३-२४७-७॥
eṣāṃ devanīkāyānāṃ pṛthak-pṛthag anekaśaḥ। bhāsvantaḥ kāmasampannā lokās tejomayāḥ śubhāḥ॥03-247-7॥
[एषां (eṣām) - of these; देवनिकायानां (deva-nikāyānām) - of divine groups; पृथक्पृथग् (pṛthak-pṛthag) - separately; अनेकशः (anekaśaḥ) - in many ways; भास्वन्तः (bhāsvantaḥ) - radiant; कामसम्पन्नाः (kāmasampannāḥ) - endowed with enjoyment; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; तेजोमयाः (tejomayāḥ) - filled with brilliance; शुभाः (śubhāḥ) - auspicious;]
(Of these divine groups, separately, in many ways, radiant, endowed with enjoyment, the worlds (are) filled with brilliance (and) auspicious.)
The worlds of these different groups of gods, each manifold, are radiant, filled with enjoyment, splendid with brilliance, and auspicious. (03-247-7)
त्रयस्त्रिंशत्सहस्राणि योजनानां हिरण्मयः। मेरुः पर्वतराड्यत्र देवोद्यानानि मुद्गल ॥०३-२४७-८॥
trayastr̥ṃśat-sahasrāṇi yojanānāṃ hiraṇmayaḥ। meruḥ parvatarāḍ yatra devodyānāni mudgala ॥03-247-8॥
[त्रयस्त्रिंशत्सहस्राणि (trayastr̥ṃśat-sahasrāṇi) - thirty-three thousand; योजनानां (yojanānāṃ) - of yojanas (a measure of distance); हिरण्मयः (hiraṇmayaḥ) - golden; मेरुः (meruḥ) - Meru (name of the sacred mountain); पर्वतराट् (parvatarāṭ) - king of mountains; यत्र (yatra) - where; देवोद्यानानि (devodyānāni) - celestial gardens; मुद्गल (mudgala) - Mudgala (addressing Mudgala);]
(Thirty-three thousand of yojanas golden Meru king of mountains where celestial gardens Mudgala.)
O Mudgala, Meru, the king of mountains, which is thirty-three thousand yojanas in extent and golden, is where the celestial gardens are. (03-247-8)
नन्दनादीनि पुण्यानि विहाराः पुण्यकर्मणाम्। न क्षुत्पिपासे न ग्लानिर्न शीतोष्णभयं तथा ॥०३-२४७-९॥
nandanādīni puṇyāni vihārāḥ puṇyakarmaṇām। na kṣutpipāse na glānirna śītoṣṇabhayaṃ tathā॥03-247-9॥
[नन्दनादीनि (nandanādīni) - like Nandana (and others); पुण्यानि (puṇyāni) - auspicious; विहाराः (vihārāḥ) - pleasure gardens; पुण्यकर्मणाम् (puṇyakarmaṇām) - of those with meritorious deeds; न (na) - not; क्षुत्पिपासे (kṣutpipāse) - hunger and thirst; न (na) - not; ग्लानिः (glāniḥ) - fatigue; न (na) - not; शीतोष्णभयम् (śītoṣṇabhayam) - fear of cold and heat; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Pleasure gardens like Nandana and others, auspicious, for those of meritorious deeds. Not hunger and thirst, not fatigue, not fear of cold and heat likewise.)
There are auspicious pleasure gardens like Nandana for those who have performed meritorious deeds; there is no hunger or thirst, no fatigue, and likewise no fear of cold or heat. (3-247-9)
बीभत्समशुभं वापि रोगा वा तत्र केचन। मनोज्ञाः सर्वतो गन्धाः सुखस्पर्शाश्च सर्वशः ॥०३-२४७-१०॥
bībhtsamaśubhaṃ vāpi rogā vā tatra kecana। manojñāḥ sarvato gandhāḥ sukhasparśāśca sarvaśaḥ॥03-247-10॥
[बीभत्सम् (bībhtsam) - repulsive; unpleasant; अशुभम् (aśubham) - inauspicious; evil; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; रोगाः (rogāḥ) - diseases; वा (vā) - or; तत्र (tatra) - there; केचन (kecana) - some; मनोज्ञाः (manojñāḥ) - pleasing to the mind; delightful; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; गन्धाः (gandhāḥ) - fragrances; scents; सुखस्पर्शाः (sukhasparśāḥ) - pleasant to the touch; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - everywhere; in every way;]
(Repulsive, inauspicious, or even some diseases may be there; delightful fragrances from all sides, and pleasant to the touch everywhere.)
There can be repulsive, inauspicious things or even some diseases there; but there are delightful fragrances all around and everywhere a pleasant touch. (03-247-10)
शब्दाः श्रुतिमनोग्राह्याः सर्वतस्तत्र वै मुने। न शोको न जरा तत्र नायासपरिदेवने ॥०३-२४७-११॥
śabdāḥ śrutimanogrāhyāḥ sarvatas tatra vai mune। na śoko na jarā tatra nāyāsaparidevane ॥03-247-11॥
[शब्दाः (śabdāḥ) - sounds; (words; utterances;) श्रुतिमनोग्राह्याः (śrutimanogrāhyāḥ) - perceptible to ear and mind; (grasped by hearing and mind;) सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; everywhere; तत्र (tatra) - there; वै (vai) - indeed; मुने (mune) - O sage; न (na) - not; शोकः (śokaḥ) - sorrow; न (na) - not; जरा (jarā) - old age; तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; आयासपरिदेवने (āyāsaparidevane) - fatigue and lamentation;]
(Sounds perceptible to ear and mind from all sides there indeed, O sage. Not sorrow, not old age there, not fatigue and lamentation.)
O sage, there sounds are grasped by the ear and the mind from every direction; there is no sorrow, no old age, nor fatigue or lamentation there. (03-247-11)
ईदृशः स मुने लोकः स्वकर्मफलहेतुकः। सुकृतैस्तत्र पुरुषाः सम्भवन्त्यात्मकर्मभिः ॥०३-२४७-१२॥
īdṛśaḥ sa mune lokaḥ svakarma-phal-hetukaḥ। sukṛtais tatra puruṣāḥ sambhavanti ātmakarmabhiḥ॥03-247-12॥
[ईदृशः (īdṛśaḥ) - such; स (sa) - this; मुने (mune) - O sage; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; स्वकर्मफलहेतुकः (svakarma-phal-hetukaḥ) - caused by the fruit of one's own actions; सुकृतैः (sukṛtaiḥ) - by good deeds; तत्र (tatra) - there; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; सम्भवन्ति (sambhavanti) - are born; आत्मकर्मभिः (ātmakarmabhiḥ) - by their own actions;]
(Such this O sage world caused by the fruit of one's own actions. By good deeds there men are born by their own actions.)
O sage, such is this world, caused by the fruit of one's own actions. There, men are born by their own good deeds. (03-247-12)
तैजसानि शरीराणि भवन्त्यत्रोपपद्यताम्। कर्मजान्येव मौद्गल्य न मातृपितृजान्युत ॥०३-२४७-१३॥
taijasāni śarīrāṇi bhavanty atropapadyatām। karmajāny eva maudgalya na mātṛ-pitṛ-jāny uta ॥03-247-13॥
[तैजसानि (taijasāni) - consisting of or produced from tejas (luminous subtle essence); शरीराणि (śarīrāṇi) - bodies; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; exist; become; अत्र (atra) - here; उपपद्यताम् (upapadyatām) - at the arising, for those who have taken birth; कर्मजानि (karmajāni) - arising from (their own) karma; karma-caused; एव (eva) - only; indeed; मौद्गल्य (maudgalya) - O Maudgalya; न (na) - not; no; मातृपितृजानि (mātṛ-pitṛ-jāni) - born of mother and father; originating from parents; उत (uta) - furthermore; and also;]
(Bodies made of tejas are here brought forth, O Maudgalya, only from karma, not born of mother and father, indeed.)
O Maudgalya, bodies composed of tejas arise here solely from karma—they are not produced from mother and father. (03-247-13)
न च स्वेदो न दौर्गन्ध्यं पुरीषं मूत्रमेव च। तेषां न च रजो वस्त्रं बाधते तत्र वै मुने ॥०३-२४७-१४॥
na ca svedo na daurgandhyaṃ purīṣaṃ mūtrameva ca। teṣāṃ na ca rajo vastraṃ bādhate tatra vai mune॥03-247-14॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; स्वेदः (svedaḥ) - sweat; न (na) - not; दौर्गन्ध्यम् (daurgandhyam) - bad odor; पुरीषम् (purīṣam) - excrement; मूत्रम् (mūtram) - urine; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; रजः (rajaḥ) - dust; वस्त्रम् (vastram) - clothing; बाधते (bādhate) - afflicts; तत्र (tatra) - there; वै (vai) - indeed; मुने (mune) - O sage;]
(And not sweat, and not bad odor, excrement, indeed urine and; of them, not and dust, clothing afflicts, there indeed O sage.)
There is neither sweat nor bad odor, excrement nor even urine for them; O sage, dust does not soil their clothing there. (03-247-14)
न म्लायन्ति स्रजस्तेषां दिव्यगन्धा मनोरमाः। पर्युह्यन्ते विमानैश्च ब्रह्मन्नेवंविधाश्च ते ॥०३-२४७-१५॥
na mlāyanti srajasteṣāṃ divyagandhā manoramāḥ। paryuhyante vimānaiśca brahmann evaṃvidhāś ca te ॥03-247-15॥
[न (na) - not; म्लायन्ति (mlāyanti) - they fade; स्रजः (srajaḥ) - garlands; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; दिव्यगन्धाः (divyagandhāḥ) - heavenly-scented; मनोरमाः (manoramāḥ) - pleasing; पर्युह्यन्ते (paryuhyante) - are surrounded; विमानैः (vimānaiḥ) - by Vimānas (celestial vehicles); च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; एवंविधाः (evaṃvidhāḥ) - such as these; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they;]
(Not they fade, their garlands, heavenly-scented, pleasing; are surrounded by Vimānas and, O Brahman, such as these and they.)
O Brahman, their garlands, heavenly-scented and pleasing, do not fade; they are also surrounded by celestial vehicles, and such are those (beings). (03-247-15)
ईर्ष्याशोकक्लमापेता मोहमात्सर्यवर्जिताः। सुखं स्वर्गजितस्तत्र वर्तयन्ति महामुने ॥०३-२४७-१६॥
īrṣyāśoka-klamāpētā moha-mātsarya-varjitāḥ। sukhaṃ svarga-jitas tatra vartayanti mahāmune ॥03-247-16॥
[ईर्ष्या (īrṣyā) - envy; शोक (śoka) - sorrow; क्लम (klama) - weariness; अपेता (apetāḥ) - departed; मोह (moha) - delusion; मात्सर्य (mātsarya) - malice; वर्जिताः (varjitāḥ) - devoid of; सुखं (sukham) - happiness; स्वर्गजितः (svarga-jitaḥ) - those who have conquered heaven; तत्र (tatra) - there; वर्तयन्ति (vartayanti) - they dwell; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage;]
(Envy, sorrow, and weariness departed, delusion and malice devoid of, happiness those who have conquered heaven there dwell, O great sage.)
O great sage, those who have conquered heaven, devoid of delusion and malice, with envy, sorrow, and weariness gone, dwell there in happiness. (03-247-16)
तेषां तथाविधानां तु लोकानां मुनिपुङ्गव। उपर्युपरि शक्रस्य लोका दिव्यगुणान्विताः ॥०३-२४७-१७॥
teṣāṃ tathāvidhānāṃ tu lokānāṃ munipuṅgava। uparyupari śakrasya lokā divyaguṇānvitāḥ ॥03-247-17॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of those; तथाविधानां (tathāvidhānām) - such; तु (tu) - but; लोकानां (lokānām) - of worlds; मुनिपुङ्गव (munipuṅgava) - O best of sages; उपर्युपरि (uparyupari) - above upon above; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; लोका (lokāḥ) - worlds; दिव्यगुणान्विताः (divyaguṇānvitāḥ) - possessed of divine qualities;]
(Of those such worlds, but, O best of sages, above and above, the worlds of Śakra, endowed with divine qualities.)
But above all those kinds of worlds, O best of sages, there are the worlds of Śakra, endowed with divine qualities. (03-247-17)
पुरस्ताद्ब्रह्मणस्तत्र लोकास्तेजोमयाः शुभाः। यत्र यान्त्यृषयो ब्रह्मन्पूताः स्वैः कर्मभिः शुभैः ॥०३-२४७-१८॥
purastād brahmaṇas tatra lokās tejomayāḥ śubhāḥ। yatra yānty ṛṣayo brahman pūtāḥ svaiḥ karmabhiḥ śubhaiḥ॥03-247-18॥
[पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - in front (of); ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahman; तत्र (tatra) - there; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; realms; तेजोमयाः (tejomayāḥ) - made of light; शुभाः (śubhāḥ) - auspicious; यत्र (yatra) - where; यान्ति (yānti) - go; reach; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; पूताः (pūtāḥ) - purified; स्वैः (svaiḥ) - by their own; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - actions; शुभैः (śubhaiḥ) - auspicious;]
(In front (of) Brahman there worlds made of light auspicious; where go sages O Brahman purified by their own actions auspicious.)
O Brahman, in front of Brahman, there are auspicious worlds made of light, where the sages, purified by their own auspicious actions, go. (03-247-18)
ऋभवो नाम तत्रान्ये देवानामपि देवताः। तेषां लोकाः परतरे तान्यजन्तीह देवताः ॥०३-२४७-१९॥
ṛbhavo nāma tatrānye devānām api devatāḥ। teṣāṃ lokāḥ paratare tāny ajantīha devatāḥ ॥03-247-19॥
[ऋभवः (ṛbhavaḥ) - ऋभु gods; demi-gods; craftsmen; नाम (nāma) - by name; called; तत्र (tatra) - there; अन्ये (anye) - other; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; अपि (api) - even; also; देवताः (devatāḥ) - divinities; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; realms; परतरे (paratare) - higher; beyond; तानि (tāni) - those; अजन्ति (ajanti) - create; produce; इह (iha) - here; देवताः (devatāḥ) - divinities; ॥०३-२४७-१९॥ (॥03-247-19॥) -;]
(The Ṛbhus by name, there, other (distinct), are divinities even among the gods; of them, the worlds are higher; those, here, these divinities produce.)
The Ṛbhus, by name, are there as others—divinities even among the gods; for them are realms that are higher, and those worlds, here, are produced by these divinities. (03-247-19)
स्वयम्प्रभास्ते भास्वन्तो लोकाः कामदुघाः परे। न तेषां स्त्रीकृतस्तापो न लोकैश्वर्यमत्सरः ॥०३-२४७-२०॥
svayamprabhāste bhāsvanto lokāḥ kāmadughāḥ pare। na teṣāṃ strīkṛtastāpo na lokaaiśvaryamatsaraḥ॥03-247-20॥

(Self-luminous those shining worlds wish-yielding superior; not for them caused by women pain, not world prosperity envy.)
Those superior shining worlds are self-luminous and wish-yielding; for them, there is no pain caused by women, nor any envy of the world's prosperity. (03-247-20)
न वर्तयन्त्याहुतिभिस्ते नाप्यमृतभोजनाः। तथा दिव्यशरीरास्ते न च विग्रहमूर्तयः ॥०३-२४७-२१॥
na vartayantyāhutibhis te nāpy amṛtabhojanāḥ। tathā divyaśarīrās te na ca vigrahamūrtayaḥ॥03-247-21॥
[न (na) - not; वर्तयन्ति (vartayanti) - receive; आहुतिभिः (āhutibhiḥ) - by offerings; ते (te) - they; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - also; अमृतभोजनाः (amṛtabhojanāḥ) - eaters of ambrosia; तथा (tathā) - thus; दिव्यशरीराः (divyaśarīrāḥ) - having celestial bodies; ते (te) - they; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; विग्रहमूर्तयः (vigrahamūrtayaḥ) - forms with a (material) body;]
(Not receive by offerings they, nor also eaters of ambrosia; thus with celestial bodies they, not and forms with a body (they are).)
They do not receive offerings, nor are they eaters of ambrosia; thus, though they have celestial bodies, they are not embodied in a material form. (03-247-21)
न सुखे सुखकामाश्च देवदेवाः सनातनाः। न कल्पपरिवर्तेषु परिवर्तन्ति ते तथा ॥०३-२४७-२२॥
na sukhe sukhakāmāś ca devadevāḥ sanātanāḥ। na kalpaparivarteṣu parivartanti te tathā॥03-247-22॥
[न (na) - not; सुखे (sukhe) - in happiness; सुखकामाः (sukhakāmāḥ) - desiring happiness; च (ca) - and; देवदेवाः (devadevāḥ) - lords of gods; सनातनाः (sanātanāḥ) - eternal; न (na) - not; कल्पपरिवर्तेषु (kalpaparivarteṣu) - in the changes of aeons; परिवर्तन्ति (parivartanti) - undergo change; ते (te) - they; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Not in happiness, those desiring happiness and the lords of gods, the eternal ones, not in the changes of aeons do they thus undergo change.)
Those eternal lords of gods who desire happiness do not undergo change in happiness, nor are they affected by the changes of the aeons. (03-247-22)
जरा मृत्युः कुतस्तेषां हर्षः प्रीतिः सुखं न च। न दुःखं न सुखं चापि रागद्वेषौ कुतो मुने ॥०३-२४७-२३॥
jarā mṛtyuḥ kutasteṣāṃ harṣaḥ prītiḥ sukhaṃ na ca। na duḥkhaṃ na sukhaṃ cāpi rāgadveṣau kuto mune ॥03-247-23॥
[जरा (jarā) - old age; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of those; हर्षः (harṣaḥ) - joy; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happiness; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - sorrow; न (na) - not; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happiness; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; रागद्वेषौ (rāgadveṣau) - attachment and aversion; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; मुने (mune) - O sage;]
(Old age, death, from where of those, joy, affection, happiness and not; not sorrow, not happiness also, attachment and aversion from where, O sage.)
O sage, for those (who are free), from where can old age and death arise? Joy, affection, happiness do not exist for them; nor do sorrow and happiness; from where can attachment and aversion arise? (03-247-23)
देवानामपि मौद्गल्य काङ्क्षिता सा गतिः परा। दुष्प्रापा परमा सिद्धिरगम्या कामगोचरैः ॥०३-२४७-२४॥
devānām api maudgalya kāṅkṣitā sā gatiḥ parā। duṣprāpā paramā siddhir agamyā kāmago caraiḥ॥03-247-24॥
[देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; अपि (api) - even; मौद्गल्य (maudgalya) - O Maudgalya; काङ्क्षिता (kāṅkṣitā) - desired; सा (sā) - that; गतिः (gatiḥ) - state; goal; परा (parā) - supreme; दुष्प्रापा (duṣprāpā) - difficult to attain; परमा (paramā) - highest; सिद्धिः (siddhiḥ) - perfection; accomplishment; अगम्या (agamya) - inaccessible; कामगोचरैः (kāmago caraiḥ) - to those who pursue desires;]
(Of the gods even, O Maudgalya, desired that supreme state; difficult to attain, highest perfection, inaccessible to those who pursue desires.)
O Maudgalya, even the gods desire that supreme goal; it is a highest perfection, difficult to attain, and inaccessible to those who follow desires. (03-247-24)
त्रयस्त्रिंशदिमे लोकाः शेषा लोका मनीषिभिः। गम्यन्ते नियमैः श्रेष्ठैर्दानैर्वा विधिपूर्वकैः ॥०३-२४७-२५॥
trayastr̥ṃśad ime lokāḥ śeṣā lokā manīṣibhiḥ। gamyante niyamaiḥ śreṣṭhaiḥ dānair vā vidhi-pūrvakaiḥ॥03-247-25॥
[त्रयस्त्रिंशत् (trayastr̥ṃśat) - thirty-three;' इमे (ime) - these;' लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds;' शेषाः (śeṣāḥ) - the remaining;' लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds;' मनीषिभिः (manīṣibhiḥ) - by the wise;' गम्यन्ते (gamyante) - are attained;' नियमैः (niyamaiḥ) - by disciplines;' श्रेष्ठैः (śreṣṭhaiḥ) - excellent;' दानैः (dānaiḥ) - by gifts;' वा (vā) - or;' विधिपूर्वकैः (vidhi-pūrvakaiḥ) - accompanied by (proper) ritual;]
(These thirty-three worlds, the remaining worlds are attained by the wise by excellent disciplines, or by gifts accompanied by ritual.)
These thirty-three worlds are here; the other worlds are attained by the wise through excellent disciplines or by gifts performed according to proper ritual. (03-247-25)
सेयं दानकृता व्युष्टिरत्र प्राप्ता सुखावहा। तां भुङ्क्ष्व सुकृतैर्लब्धां तपसा द्योतितप्रभः ॥०३-२४७-२६॥
seyaṃ dānakṛtā vyuṣṭir atra prāptā sukhāvahā। tāṃ bhuṅkṣva sukṛtair labdhāṃ tapasā dyotitaprabhaḥ॥03-247-26॥
[सा (sā) - she; that; इयम् (iyam) - this; दानकृता (dānakṛtā) - made by giving; produced by gifts; व्युष्टिः (vyuṣṭiḥ) - brightness; dawn; अत्र (atra) - here; प्राप्ता (prāptā) - has been obtained; attained; सुखावहा (sukhāvahā) - bringing happiness; giving joy; ताम् (tām) - her; that (accusative singular feminine); भुङ्क्ष्व (bhuṅkṣva) - enjoy; partake; सुकृतैः (sukṛtaiḥ) - by meritorious deeds; by good actions; लब्धाम् (labdhām) - obtained; acquired; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; by penance; द्योतितप्रभः (dyotita-prabhaḥ) - illuminated splendour; (O one) whose radiance is brightened;]
(She, this brightness produced by giving, here attained, bringing happiness; that enjoy, obtained by meritorious deeds, whose radiance is brightened by austerity.)
This radiance, produced by gifts and now attained here as a source of happiness, enjoy it—acquired through meritorious deeds, O one whose splendour is illuminated by austerity. (03-247-26)
एतत्स्वर्गसुखं विप्र लोका नानाविधास्तथा। गुणाः स्वर्गस्य प्रोक्तास्ते दोषानपि निबोध मे ॥०३-२४७-२७॥
etatsvargasukhaṃ vipra lokā nānāvidhāstathā। guṇāḥ svargasya proktāste doṣānapi nibodha me ॥03-247-27॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; स्वर्गसुखं (svarga-sukham) - the happiness of heaven; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; नानाविधाः (nānā-vidhāḥ) - of various kinds; तथा (tathā) - also; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; स्वर्गस्य (svargasya) - of heaven; प्रोक्ताः (proktāḥ) - have been spoken; ते (te) - those; दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; अपि (api) - also; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; मे (me) - from me;]
(This happiness of heaven, O brāhmaṇa, the worlds are also of various kinds; the qualities of heaven have been spoken. Those faults also, understand from me.)
O brāhmaṇa, this is the happiness of heaven, and the worlds are of various kinds. The qualities of heaven have been described; now, also learn from me about their faults. (03-247-27)
कृतस्य कर्मणस्तत्र भुज्यते यत्फलं दिवि। न चान्यत्क्रियते कर्म मूलच्छेदेन भुज्यते ॥०३-२४७-२८॥
kṛtasya karmaṇas tatra bhujyate yat phalaṁ divi। na ca anyat kriyate karma mūlacchedena bhujyate ॥03-247-28॥
[कृतस्य (kṛtasya) - of what has been done; कर्मणः (karmaṇaḥ) - of the action; तत्र (tatra) - there; भुज्यते (bhujyate) - is experienced; यत् (yat) - which; फलं (phalaṁ) - fruit; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; क्रियते (kriyate) - is done; कर्म (karma) - action; मूलच्छेदेन (mūlacchedena) - by the cutting of the root; भुज्यते (bhujyate) - is experienced;]
(Of what has been done, of the action, there, is experienced the fruit which in heaven; and not other action is done; by the cutting of the root, is experienced.)
The fruit of actions that have been performed is experienced there in heaven; and no new actions are performed—by the cutting off of the root, (only the past karmas) are experienced. (3-247-28)
सोऽत्र दोषो मम मतस्तस्यान्ते पतनं च यत्। सुखव्याप्तमनस्कानां पतनं यच्च मुद्गल ॥०३-२४७-२९॥
so'tra doṣo mama matas tasyānte patanaṃ ca yat. sukhavyāptamanaskānāṃ patanaṃ yac ca mudgala ॥03-247-29॥
[सः (saḥ) - he;“ अत्र (atra) - here;“ दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault;“ मम (mama) - my;“ मतः (mataḥ) - opinion;“ तस्य (tasya) - his;“ अन्ते (ante) - at the end;“ पतन् (patanaṃ) - fall;“ च (ca) - and;“ यत् (yat) - which;“ सुखव्याप्त-मनस्कानाम् (sukhavyāpta-manaskānām) - of those whose mind is pervaded by happiness;“ पतन् (patanaṃ) - fall;“ यत् (yat) - which;“ च (ca) - and;“ मुद्गल (mudgala) - O Mudgala;]
(He, here, the fault, my, in (my) opinion, at his end, the fall and that which; of those whose mind is pervaded by happiness, the fall which and, O Mudgala.)
O Mudgala, in my opinion, this is the fault here: that at his end is a fall, and that those whose minds are absorbed in happiness also fall. (03-247-29)
असन्तोषः परीतापो दृष्ट्वा दीप्ततराः श्रियः। यद्भवत्यवरे स्थाने स्थितानां तच्च दुष्करम् ॥०३-२४७-३०॥
asantoṣaḥ parītāpo dṛṣṭvā dīptatarāḥ śriyaḥ। yadbhavatyavare sthāne sthitānāṃ tacca duṣkaram ॥03-247-30॥
[असन्तोषः (asantoṣaḥ) - lack of contentment; परीतापः (parītāpaḥ) - distress; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; दीप्ततराः (dīptatarāḥ) - more brilliant; श्रियः (śriyaḥ) - prosperities; यद् (yad) - what; भवति (bhavati) - arises; अवरे (avare) - in an inferior; स्थाने (sthāne) - position; स्थितानाम् (sthitānām) - for those situated; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; दुष्करम् (duṣkaram) - difficult;]
(Lack of contentment, distress, having seen more brilliant prosperities, what arises in an inferior position for those situated, that also is difficult.)
Lack of contentment and distress arise for those who are situated in an inferior position when they see greater prosperities, and that is difficult to bear. (03-247-30)
सञ्ज्ञामोहश्च पततां रजसा च प्रधर्षणम्। प्रम्लानेषु च माल्येषु ततः पिपतिषोर्भयम् ॥०३-२४७-३१॥
sañjñā-mohaś ca patatāṃ rajasā ca pradharṣaṇam। pramlāneṣu ca mālyeṣu tataḥ pipatiṣor bhayam ॥03-247-31॥
[सञ्ज्ञामोहः (sañjñā-mohaḥ) - bewilderment of consciousness; च (ca) - and; पतताम् (patatām) - of those falling; रजसा (rajasā) - by dust; च (ca) - and; प्रधर्षणम् (pradharṣaṇam) - affliction; प्रम्लानेषु (pramlāneṣu) - in withered; च (ca) - and; माल्येषु (mālyeṣu) - in garlands; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पिपतिषोः (pipatiṣoḥ) - of one about to fall; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(Bewilderment of consciousness and affliction by dust upon those falling; in withered garlands and then fear for one about to fall.)

आ ब्रह्मभवनादेते दोषा मौद्गल्य दारुणाः। नाकलोके सुकृतिनां गुणास्त्वयुतशो नृणाम् ॥०३-२४७-३२॥
ā brahmabhavanād ete doṣā maudgalya dāruṇāḥ. nākaloke sukṛtināṃ guṇās tvayutaśo nṛṇām ॥03-247-32॥
[आ (ā) - from; towards; ब्रह्मभवनात् (brahmabhavanāt) - from the abode of Brahma; एते (ete) - these; दोषाः (doṣāḥ) - faults; मौद्गल्य (maudgalya) - O Maudgalya; दारुणाः (dāruṇāḥ) - severe; formidable; नाकलोके (nākaloke) - in the celestial world; सुकृतिनाम् (sukṛtinām) - of the virtuous; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - virtues; त्व (tva) - indeed; surely; अयुतशः (ayutaśaḥ) - by tens of thousands; in great numbers; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men;]
(From the abode of Brahma, these faults, O Maudgalya, (are) severe. In the celestial world, virtues of the virtuous, indeed by tens of thousands, (are) of men.)
O Maudgalya, these severe faults come from the abode of Brahma, but in the celestial world, there are indeed tens of thousands of virtues among virtuous men. (03-247-32)
अयं त्वन्यो गुणः श्रेष्ठश्च्युतानां स्वर्गतो मुने। शुभानुशययोगेन मनुष्येषूपजायते ॥०३-२४७-३३॥
ayaṁ tvaṇyo guṇaḥ śreṣṭhaś cyutānāṁ svargato mune। śubhānuśayayogena manuṣyeṣūpajāyate ॥03-247-33॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; त् (t) - but; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; गुणः (guṇaḥ) - quality; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - excellent; च्युतानाम् (cyutānām) - of those who have fallen; स्वर्गतः (svargataḥ) - from heaven; मुने (mune) - O sage; शुभ (śubha) - auspicious; अनुशय (anuśaya) - residual impression; योगेन (yogena) - by conjunction; मनुष्येषु (manuṣyeṣu) - among men; उपजायते (upajāyate) - is born;]
(This but another quality excellent of those fallen from heaven, O sage, by auspicious residual impression's conjunction, among men is born.)
But this, O sage, is another excellent quality: when those fallen from heaven possess auspicious residual impressions, they are born among humans. (3-247-33)
तत्रापि सुमहाभागः सुखभागभिजायते। न चेत्सम्बुध्यते तत्र गच्छत्यधमतां ततः ॥०३-२४७-३४॥
tatrāpi sumahābhāgaḥ sukhabhāgabhi jāyate. na cet sambudhyate tatra gacchaty adhamatāṃ tataḥ ॥03-247-34॥
[तत्रापि (tatrāpi) - there also; सुमहाभागः (sumahābhāgaḥ) - very fortunate one; सुखभागभि (sukhabhāgabhi) - partaking in happiness; जायते (jāyate) - is born; न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; सम्बुध्यते (sambudhyate) - he awakens; तत्र (tatra) - there; गच्छति (gacchati) - he goes; अधमताम् (adhamatām) - to a lower state; ततः (tataḥ) - from that;]
(There also, a very fortunate one is born, partaking in happiness. If he does not awaken there, then from that he goes to a lower state.)
There too, a very fortunate person is born enjoying happiness, but if he does not awaken there, then from there he descends to a lower condition. (03-247-34)
इह यत्क्रियते कर्म तत्परत्रोपभुज्यते। कर्मभूमिरियं ब्रह्मन्फलभूमिरसौ मता ॥०३-२४७-३५॥
iha yat kriyate karma tat paratra upabhujyate। karma-bhūmir iyaṃ brahman phala-bhūmir asau matā ॥03-247-35॥
[इह (iha) - here; यत् (yat) - which; क्रियते (kriyate) - is done; कर्म (karma) - action; तत् (tat) - that; परत्र (paratra) - elsewhere; in the hereafter; उपभुज्यते (upabhujyate) - is enjoyed; is experienced; कर्मभूमि (karma-bhūmi) - land of action; इयम् (iyam) - this; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; फलभूमि (phala-bhūmi) - land of fruit (of action); असौ (asau) - that (there); मता (matā) - is considered; is regarded as;]
(Here which action is done, that in the hereafter is experienced. Land of action, this, O Brahman; land of fruit, that (there), is considered.)
O Brahman, whatever action is performed here is enjoyed in the hereafter. This is considered the land of action, and that (there) is the land of results. (03-247-35)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यन्मां पृच्छसि मुद्गल। तवानुकम्पया साधो साधु गच्छाम माचिरम् ॥०३-२४७-३६॥
etat te sarvam ākhyātaṃ yan māṃ pṛcchasi mudgala। tavānukampayā sādho sādhu gacchāma mā-ciram ॥03-247-36॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - to me; पृच्छसि (pṛcchasi) - you ask; मुद्गल (mudgala) - Mudgala; तव (tava) - your; अनुकम्पया (anukampayā) - out of compassion; साधो (sādho) - O good one; साधु (sādhu) - well; गच्छाम (gacchāma) - let me go; मा (mā) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - delay;]
(This to you all has been told which me you ask, Mudgala. By your compassion, O good one, well let me go, not delay.)
O Mudgala, all that which you ask me has been told to you. By your compassion, O virtuous one, let me go without delay. (03-247-36)

etat-śrutvā tu maudgalyo vākyaṃ vimamṛśe dhiyā. vimṛśya ca muni-śreṣṭho deva-dūtam uvāca ha ॥03-247-37॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; मौद्गल्यः (maudgalyaḥ) - Maudgalya (proper noun); वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; विममृशे (vimamṛśe) - considered; धिया (dhiyā) - with mind; विमृश्य (vimṛśya) - having considered; च (ca) - and; मुनिश्रेष्ठः (muni-śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best among sages; देवदूतम् (deva-dūtam) - messenger of the gods; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Having heard this, but Maudgalya considered the words with mind. And having considered, the best among sages indeed said to the messenger of the gods.)
But having heard this, Maudgalya reflected on the words with his mind, and after considering, the best among sages spoke to the messenger of the gods. (03-247-37)
देवदूत नमस्तेऽस्तु गच्छ तात यथासुखम्। महादोषेण मे कार्यं न स्वर्गेण सुखेन वा ॥०३-२४७-३८॥
devadūta namaste'stu gaccha tāta yathāsukham। mahādoṣeṇa me kāryaṃ na svargeṇa sukhena vā ॥03-247-38॥
[देवदूत (devadūta) - divine messenger; नमस्ते (namaste) - salutation to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; तात (tāta) - dear one; यथासुखम् (yathāsukham) - as is comfortable; महादोषेण (mahādoṣeṇa) - with great fault; मे (me) - to me; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - affair; न (na) - not; स्वर्गेण (svargeṇa) - by heaven; सुखेन (sukhena) - by happiness; वा (vā) - or;]
(Divine messenger, salutation to you, let it be, go, dear one, as is comfortable. With great fault, for me, it is an affair, not by heaven nor by happiness or.)
O divine messenger, salutations to you. Go, dear one, as you please. My affair is with great fault, not with heaven nor with happiness. (03-247-38)
पतनं तन्महद्दुःखं परितापः सुदारुणः। स्वर्गभाजश्च्यवन्तीह तस्मात्स्वर्गं न कामये ॥०३-२४७-३९॥
patanaṁ tanmahadduḥkhaṁ paritāpaḥ sudāruṇaḥ। svargabhājaś cyavantīha tasmāt svargaṁ na kāmaye॥03-247-39॥
[पतनम् (patanam) - fall; तत् (tat) - that; महत्त्-दुःखम् (mahat-duḥkham) - great suffering; परितापः (paritāpaḥ) - affliction; सुदारुणः (sudāruṇaḥ) - very severe; स्वर्ग-भाजः (svarga-bhājaḥ) - enjoyers of heaven; च्यवन्ति (cyavanti) - fall; इह (iha) - here; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; न (na) - not; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire;]
(The fall, that great suffering, affliction, very severe; the enjoyers of heaven fall here; therefore, heaven I do not desire.)
The fall, that great suffering, and the very severe affliction—the enjoyers of heaven also fall here; therefore, I do not desire heaven. (03-247-39)
यत्र गत्वा न शोचन्ति न व्यथन्ति चलन्ति वा। तदहं स्थानमत्यन्तं मार्गयिष्यामि केवलम् ॥०३-२४७-४०॥
yatra gatvā na śocanti na vyathanti calanti vā। tadahaṃ sthānam atyantaṃ mārgayiṣyāmi kevalam॥03-247-40॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; न (na) - not; शोचन्ति (śocanti) - they grieve; न (na) - not; व्यथन्ति (vyathanti) - they are disturbed; चलन्ति (calanti) - move; वा (vā) - or; तद् (tad) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; अत्यन्तम् (atyantam) - supreme; मार्गयिष्यामि (mārgayiṣyāmi) - I shall seek; केवलम् (kevalam) - alone;]
(Where, having gone, they do not grieve, they are not disturbed, or do not move. That place I alone shall seek, supremely.)
I alone shall seek that supreme place where, having gone, they neither grieve, nor are disturbed, nor move. (03-247-40)
इत्युक्त्वा स मुनिर्वाक्यं देवदूतं विसृज्य तम्। शिलोञ्छवृत्तिमुत्सृज्य शममातिष्ठदुत्तमम् ॥०३-२४७-४१॥
ity uktvā sa muniḥ vākyam devadūtam visṛjya tam | śiloiñcha-vṛttim utsṛjya śamam ātiṣṭhat uttamam ॥03-247-41॥
[इति उक्त्वा (iti uktvā) - having said thus; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; देवदूतम् (devadūtam) - divine messenger; विसृज्य (visṛjya) - having dismissed; तम् (tam) - him; शिलोञ्छवृत्तिम् (śiloiñcha-vṛttim) - the mode of livelihood by picking grains; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; शमम् (śamam) - tranquillity; आतिष्ठत् (ātiṣṭhat) - resorted to; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme;]
(Having said thus, he, the sage, having dismissed the divine messenger and him, having abandoned the mode of livelihood by picking grains, resorted to supreme tranquillity.)
After saying so, the sage dismissed the divine messenger, gave up the way of living by gleaning grains, and attained the highest tranquillity. (03-247-41)
तुल्यनिन्दास्तुतिर्भूत्वा समलोष्टाश्मकाञ्चनः। ज्ञानयोगेन शुद्धेन ध्याननित्यो बभूव ह ॥०३-२४७-४२॥
tulyanindāstutirbhūtvā samaloṣṭāśmakāñcanaḥ। jñānayogena śuddhena dhyānanityo babhūva ha ॥03-247-42॥
[तुल्य-निन्दा-स्तुतिः (tulya-nindā-stutiḥ) - equal in blame and praise; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; सम-लोष्ट-अश्म-काञ्चनः (sama-loṣṭa-aśma-kāñcanaḥ) - regarding clod, stone, and gold as equal; ज्ञान-योगेन (jñāna-yogena) - by the union (yoga) of knowledge; शुद्धेन (śuddhena) - by the pure; ध्यान-नित्यः (dhyāna-nityaḥ) - ever devoted to meditation; बभूव (babhūva) - became; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Having become equal in blame and praise, regarding clod, stone, and gold as equal; by the pure union of knowledge, ever devoted to meditation, he indeed became.)
He became one who was equal to blame and praise, regarded clod, stone, and gold as the same, and, through pure knowledge and constant meditation, he was indeed transformed. (03-247-42)
ध्यानयोगाद्बलं लब्ध्वा प्राप्य चर्द्धिमनुत्तमाम्। जगाम शाश्वतीं सिद्धिं परां निर्वाणलक्षणाम् ॥०३-२४७-४३॥
dhyānayogād balaṁ labdhvā prāpya ca ṛddhim anuttamām। jagāma śāśvatīṁ siddhiṁ parāṁ nirvāṇalakṣaṇām॥03-247-43॥
[ध्यानयोगात् (dhyānayogāt) - from the practice of meditation-union; बलम् (balaṁ) - strength; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; च (ca) - and; ऋद्धिम् (ṛddhim) - prosperity, supernatural power; अनुत्तमाम् (anuttamām) - unsurpassed; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; शाश्वतीम् (śāśvatīm) - eternal; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; पराम् (parām) - supreme; निर्वाणलक्षणाम् (nirvāṇalakṣaṇām) - marked by liberation;]
(From the practice of meditation-union, having obtained strength, having also attained unsurpassed prosperity, he went to the eternal, supreme perfection marked by liberation.)
By gaining strength through the practice of meditation and having attained unsurpassed prosperity, he reached the eternal and supreme perfection characterized by liberation. (03-247-43)
तस्मात्त्वमपि कौन्तेय न शोकं कर्तुमर्हसि। राज्यात्स्फीतात्परिभ्रष्टस्तपसा तदवाप्स्यसि ॥०३-२४७-४४॥
tasmāttvamapi kaunteya na śokaṃ kartumarhasi। rājyātsphītātparibhraṣṭastapasā tadavāpsyasi ॥03-247-44॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kuntī; न (na) - not; शोकं (śokaṃ) - sorrow; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; राज्यात् (rājyāt) - from the kingdom; स्फीतात् (sphītāt) - prosperous; परिभ्रष्टः (paribhraṣṭaḥ) - deprived; तपसा (tapasā) - by asceticism; तत् (tat) - that; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will attain;]
(Therefore you also, O son of Kuntī, ought not to do sorrow. From the prosperous kingdom deprived, by asceticism, that you will attain.)
Therefore, you too, O son of Kuntī, should not grieve. Though deprived of a prosperous kingdom, you will regain it through asceticism. (03-247-44)
सुखस्यानन्तरं दुःखं दुःखस्यानन्तरं सुखम्। पर्यायेणोपवर्तन्ते नरं नेमिमरा इव ॥०३-२४७-४५॥
sukhasyānantaraṃ duḥkhaṃ duḥkhasyānantaraṃ sukham। paryāyeṇopavartante naraṃ nemimarā iva ॥03-247-45॥
[सुखस्य (sukhasya) - of happiness; अनन्तरं (anantaraṃ) - after; following; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - sorrow; suffering; दुःखस्य (duḥkhasya) - of sorrow; अनन्तरं (anantaraṃ) - after; following; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; पर्यायेण (paryāyeṇa) - in alternation; in turn; उपवर्तन्ते (upavartante) - turn about; revolve; नरं (naraṃ) - man; नेमिमराः (nemimarāḥ) - rims (of a wheel); इव (iva) - like; as;]
(Of happiness following, sorrow; of sorrow following, happiness. In alternation, they revolve around man like the rims (of a wheel). (03-247-45))
After happiness comes sorrow; after sorrow comes happiness. In alternation, they revolve around man like the rims of a wheel. (03-247-45)
पितृपैतामहं राज्यं प्राप्स्यस्यमितविक्रम। वर्षात्त्रयोदशादूर्ध्वं व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥०३-२४७-४६॥
pitṛpaitāmahaṃ rājyaṃ prāpsyasy amitavikrama। varṣāt trayodaśād ūrdhvaṃ vyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ॥03-247-46॥
[पितृपैतामहं (pitṛpaitāmaham) - paternal and grandfatherly (ancestral); राज्यं (rājyam) - kingdom; प्राप्स्यसि (prāpsyasi) - you will obtain; अमितविक्रम (amitavikrama) - O infinitely valiant one; वर्षात् (varṣāt) - from years; त्रयोदशात् (trayodaśāt) - from thirteen; ऊर्ध्वं (ūrdhvam) - after; व्येतु (vyetu) - may expire; ते (te) - your; मानसः (mānasaḥ) - mental; ज्वरः (jvaraḥ) - agony;]
(Paternal and grandfatherly kingdom you will obtain, O infinitely valiant one; after thirteen years may your mental agony expire.)
O hero of unlimited valor, you will regain the ancestral kingdom; after thirteen years, may your mental anguish end. (3-247-46)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; (a proper name, the sage Vaiśampāyana); उवाच (uvāca) - said; spoke;]
(Vaiśampāyana said;)

एवमुक्त्वा स भगवान्व्यासः पाण्डवनन्दनम्। जगाम तपसे धीमान्पुनरेवाश्रमं प्रति ॥०३-२४७-४७॥
evam uktvā sa bhagavān vyāsaḥ pāṇḍavanandanam। jagāma tapase dhīmān punar eva āśramam prati ॥03-247-47॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; पाण्डवनन्दनम् (pāṇḍavanandanam) - the delight of the Pāṇḍavas; जगाम (jagāma) - went; तपसे (tapase) - for austerity; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise; पुनः (punar) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; आश्रमं (āśramam) - hermitage; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Thus having spoken, he, the revered Vyāsa, to the delight of the Pāṇḍavas, went for austerity, the wise one, again indeed towards the hermitage.)
Thus, having spoken, the revered Vyāsa, the wise sage, went again toward his hermitage for the practice of austerity, after addressing the delight of the Pāṇḍavas. (3-247-47)
