tasmin bahu-mṛge 'raṇye ramamāṇā mahārathāḥ। kāmyake bharataśreṣṭhā vijahrus te yathāmarāḥ॥03-248-1॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; बहुमृगे (bahu-mṛge) - with many deer; अरण्ये ('raṇye) - in the forest; रममाणा (ramamāṇāḥ) - enjoying themselves; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; काम्यके (kāmyake) - in the Kāmyaka (forest); भरतश्रेष्ठाः (bharataśreṣṭhāḥ) - the best of the Bhāratas; विजह्रुः (vijahrus) - they sported; ते (te) - they; यथा (yathā) - like; अमराः (amarāḥ) - the immortals (gods);]

प्रेक्षमाणा बहुविधान्वनोद्देशान्समन्ततः। यथर्तुकालरम्याश्च वनराजीः सुपुष्पिताः ॥०३-२४८-२॥
prekṣamāṇā bahuvidhān vanoddeśān samantataḥ। yathārtu-kāla-ramyāś ca vana-rājīḥ supuṣpitāḥ॥03-248-2॥
[प्रेक्षमाणा (prekṣamāṇā) - seeing; बहुविधान् (bahuvidhān) - of many kinds; वनोद्देशान् (vanoddeśān) - forest tracts; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; यथ (yatha) - just as; ऋतु-काल-रम्याः (ṛtu-kāla-ramyāḥ) - made beautiful by season and time; च (ca) - and; वन-राजीः (vana-rājīḥ) - rows of forests; सुपुष्पिताः (supuṣpitāḥ) - well-blossomed;]
(Seeing forest tracts of many kinds on all sides, and rows of forests made beautiful by season and time, well-blossomed.)
She looked about at many kinds of forest regions on every side, and at the rows of forests beautifully blossoming in their proper season. (03-248-2)
पाण्डवा मृगयाशीलाश्चरन्तस्तन्महावनम्। विजह्रुरिन्द्रप्रतिमाः कञ्चित्कालमरिंदमाः ॥०३-२४८-३॥
pāṇḍavā mṛgayāśīlāś carantas tanmahāvanam। vijahrur indrapratimāḥ kañcit kālam ariṃdamāḥ॥03-248-3॥

The Pandavas, who were fond of hunting, roamed that great forest and, being as powerful as Indra, spent some time there enjoying themselves, those subduers of enemies. (03-248-3)
ततस्ते यौगपद्येन ययुः सर्वे चतुर्दिशम्। मृगयां पुरुषव्याघ्रा ब्राह्मणार्थे परन्तपाः ॥०३-२४८-४॥
tatas te yaugapadyena yayuḥ sarve caturdiśam। mṛgayāṃ puruṣavyāghrā brāhmaṇārthe parantapāḥ ॥03-248-4॥

द्रौपदीमाश्रमे न्यस्य तृणबिन्दोरनुज्ञया। महर्षेर्दीप्ततपसो धौम्यस्य च पुरोधसः ॥०३-२४८-५॥

महता परिबर्हेण राजयोग्येन संवृतः। राजभिर्बहुभिः सार्धमुपायात्काम्यकं च सः ॥०३-२४८-७॥
mahatā paribarheṇa rājayogyena saṁvṛtaḥ। rājabhirbahubhiḥ sārdhamupāyātkāmyakaṁ ca saḥ॥03-248-7॥

(He, attended by great equipment suitable for royalty, together with many kings, arrived at Kāmyaka also.)
He, accompanied by a great retinue suitable for a king and surrounded by many kings, came to Kāmyaka as well. (03-248-7)
तत्रापश्यत्प्रियां भार्यां पाण्डवानां यशस्विनीम्। तिष्ठन्तीमाश्रमद्वारि द्रौपदीं निर्जने वने ॥०३-२४८-८॥
tatrāpaśyat priyāṃ bhāryāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ yaśasvinīm| tiṣṭhantīm āśramadvāri draupadīṃ nirjane vane ॥03-248-8॥

विभ्राजमानां वपुषा बिभ्रतीं रूपमुत्तमम्। भ्राजयन्तीं वनोद्देशं नीलाभ्रमिव विद्युतम् ॥०३-२४८-९॥
vibhrājamānāṃ vapuṣā bibhratīṃ rūpam uttamam। bhrājayantīṃ vanoddeśaṃ nīlābhram iva vidyutam ॥03-248-9॥

अप्सरा देवकन्या वा माया वा देवनिर्मिता। इति कृत्वाञ्जलिं सर्वे ददृशुस्तामनिन्दिताम् ॥०३-२४८-१०॥
apsarā devakanyā vā māyā vā devanirmitā। iti kṛtvāñjaliṃ sarve dadṛśustāmaninditām ॥03-248-10॥
[अप्सरा (apsarā) - celestial nymph; देवकन्या (devakanyā) - divine maiden; वा (vā) - or; माया (māyā) - illusion; वा (vā) - or; देवनिर्मिता (devanirmitā) - created by the gods; इति (iti) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; अञ्जलिं (añjaliṃ) - joined palms; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; ताम् (tām) - her; अनिन्दिताम् (aninditām) - blameless;]
(Celestial nymph, divine maiden, or illusion, or created by the gods—thus, having made joined palms, all saw her blameless.)
Considering her as a celestial nymph, a divine maiden, an illusion, or one created by the gods, all with joined palms gazed upon that blameless lady. (03-248-10)
ततः स राजा सिन्धूनां वार्द्धक्षत्रिर्जयद्रथः। विस्मितस्तामनिन्द्याङ्गीं दृष्ट्वासीद्धृष्टमानसः ॥०३-२४८-११॥
tataḥ sa rājā sindhūnāṃ vārdhākṣatirjayadrathaḥ। vismitastāmanindyāṅgīṃ dṛṣṭvā āsīddhṛṣṭamānasaḥ॥03-248-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; सिन्धूनाम् (sindhūnām) - of the Sindhus; वार्द्धक्षत्रिः (vārdhākṣatriḥ) - son of Vṛddhakṣatra; जयद्रथः (jayadrathaḥ) - Jayadratha; विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; ताम् (tām) - her; अनिन्द्याङ्गीम् (anindyāṅgīm) - faultless-limbed; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; आसीत् (āsīt) - became; धृष्टमानसः (dhṛṣṭamānasaḥ) - bold-minded;]
(Then he king of the Sindhus, the son of Vṛddhakṣatra, Jayadratha, astonished, having seen her faultless-limbed, became bold-minded.)
Then Jayadratha, the king of the Sindhus and son of Vṛddhakṣatra, was astonished on seeing her with faultless limbs and became confident. (03-248-11)
स कोटिकाश्यं राजानमब्रवीत्काममोहितः। कस्य त्वेषानवद्याङ्गी यदि वापि न मानुषी ॥०३-२४८-१२॥
sa koṭikāśyaṃ rājānam abravīt kāmamohitaḥ। kasya tveṣānavadyāṅgī yadi vāpi na mānuṣī॥03-248-12॥
[स (sa) - he; कोटिकाश्यं (koṭikāśyam) - Koṭikāśya (proper noun, name of a king); राजानम् (rājānam) - king (accusative singular); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; काममोहितः (kāmamohitaḥ) - deluded by desire; कस्य (kasya) - whose; तु (tu) - but; एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); अनवद्याङ्गी (anavadyāṅgī) - faultless-limbed (female of impeccable form); यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; मानुषी (mānuṣī) - human (feminine);]
(He, deluded by desire, said to King Koṭikāśya: “Whose is this faultless-limbed one, or is she not human?”)
Deluded by desire, he said to King Koṭikāśya, “Whose is this woman with faultless limbs, or is she even not human?” (03-248-12)
विवाहार्थो न मे कश्चिदिमां दृष्ट्वातिसुन्दरीम्। एतामेवाहमादाय गमिष्यामि स्वमालयम् ॥०३-२४८-१३॥
vivāhārtho na me kaścid imāṃ dṛṣṭvā ati-sundarīm. etām eva aham ādāya gamiṣyāmi sva-mālayam ॥03-248-13॥
[विवाहार्थः (vivāhārthaḥ) - for the purpose of marriage; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; इमाम् (imām) - this (girl); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अतिसुन्दरीम् (ati-sundarīm) - very beautiful; एताम् (etām) - this one; एव (eva) - only; अहम् (aham) - I; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; स्वम् (svam) - own; आलयम् (ālayam) - abode;]
(For the purpose of marriage, not to me anyone, having seen this very beautiful (girl). This one only, having taken, I shall go to my own abode.)
No one has come to me with marriage in mind after seeing this very beautiful girl. I will take only her and go to my own abode. (03-248-13)
गच्छ जानीहि सौम्यैनां कस्य का च कुतोऽपि वा। किमर्थमागता सुभ्रूरिदं कण्टकितं वनम् ॥०३-२४८-१४॥
gaccha jānīhi saumyainām kasya kā ca kuto'pi vā. kimarthamāgatā subhrūridaṃ kaṇṭakitaṃ vanam ॥03-248-14॥
[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; जानीहि (jānīhi) - ascertain; सौम्य (saumya) - gentle one; एनां (enām) - her; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; का (kā) - who (she); च (ca) - and; कुतः अपि वा (kutaḥ api vā) - from where possibly; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what purpose; आगता (āgatā) - come; सुभ्रूः (subhrūḥ) - beautiful-browed (one); इदं (idaṃ) - this; कण्टकितम् (kaṇṭakitam) - filled with thorns; वनम् (vanam) - forest;]
(Go, ascertain, gentle one, her, of whom, who (she) and, from where possibly. For what purpose come, beautiful-browed (one), this filled with thorns forest.)
Go, gentle one, find out whose, who she is and from where she may have come. For what purpose has this beautiful-browed lady come to this thorn-filled forest? (3-248-14)
अपि नाम वरारोहा मामेषा लोकसुन्दरी। भजेदद्यायतापाङ्गी सुदती तनुमध्यमा ॥०३-२४८-१५॥
api nāma varārohā mām eṣā lokasundarī। bhajed adya āyatāpāṅgī sudatī tanumadhyamā ॥03-248-15॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; perhaps; नाम (nāma) - by chance; indeed; वरारोहा (varārohā) - having beautiful hips; one of excellent form; माम् (mām) - me; एषा (eṣā) - this (woman); लोकसुन्दरी (lokasundarī) - the beauty of the world; world-beautiful woman; भजेत् (bhajet) - might choose; might accept; अद्य (adya) - today; आयतापाङ्गी (āyatāpāṅgī) - having long eyes; सुदती (sudatī) - having beautiful teeth; तनुमध्यमा (tanumadhyamā) - slender-waisted (woman);]
(Indeed, by chance, the one of beautiful form, this world-beautiful woman, might choose me today, the long-eyed, beautiful-toothed, slender-waisted (woman).)
Oh, if only, by chance, this beautiful-hipped, world-renowned beauty with long eyes, lovely teeth, and a slender waist, might choose me today. (03-248-15)
अप्यहं कृतकामः स्यामिमां प्राप्य वरस्त्रियम्। गच्छ जानीहि को न्वस्या नाथ इत्येव कोटिक ॥०३-२४८-१६॥
apyahaṃ kṛtakāmaḥ syām imāṃ prāpya varastriyam। gaccha jānīhi ko nvasyā nātha ity eva koṭika ॥03-248-16॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; also; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; कृतकामः (kṛtakāmaḥ) - having desires fulfilled; स्याम् (syām) - I may be; इमां (imām) - this (accusative feminine); प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; वरस्त्रियम् (varastriyam) - excellent woman; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; जानीहि (jānīhi) - find out; know; कः (kaḥ) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; नाथः (nāthaḥ) - lord; husband; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - only; just; कोटिक (koṭika) - Koṭika (proper name);]
(Indeed, I may become one whose desires are fulfilled, having obtained this excellent woman. Go, find out: who indeed is her lord, thus only, Koṭika.)
Indeed, having won this excellent woman, I may become one whose desires are fulfilled. Go and find out, Koṭika, who her lord is. (03-248-16)
स कोटिकाश्यस्तच्छ्रुत्वा रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य कुण्डली। उपेत्य पप्रच्छ तदा क्रोष्टा व्याघ्रवधूमिव ॥०३-२४८-१७॥
sa koṭikāśyastacchrutvā rathāt praskandya kuṇḍalī| upetya papraccha tadā kroṣṭā vyāghravadūm iva ॥03-248-17॥
[स (sa) - he; कोटिकाश्यः (koṭikāśyaḥ) - Koṭikāśya (a proper name, 'the Koṭikāśyan'); तत्-श्रुत्वा (tat-śrutvā) - having heard that; रथात्-प्रस्कन्द्य (rathāt praskandya) - leaping down from the chariot; कुण्डली (kuṇḍalī) - Kuṇḍalī (proper name); उपेत्य (upetya) - having approached; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; तदा (tadā) - then; क्रोष्टा (kroṣṭā) - the jackal; व्याघ्रवधूम्-इव (vyāghravadūm iva) - like the tiger's wife;]
