ततो घोरतरः शब्दो वने समभवत्तदा। भीमसेनार्जुनौ दृष्ट्वा क्षत्रियाणाममर्षिणाम् ॥०३-२५४-१॥
tato ghorataraḥ śabdo vane samabhavattadā। bhīmasenārjunau dṛṣṭvā kṣatriyāṇām amarṣiṇām ॥03-254-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; घोरतरः (ghorataraḥ) - more terrible; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; वने (vane) - in the forest; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; तदा (tadā) - at that time; भीमसेनार्जुनौ (bhīmasenārjunau) - Bhīmasena and Arjuna; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the kṣatriyas; अमर्षिणाम् (amarṣiṇām) - of the wrathful;]
(Then more terrible sound in the forest arose at that time, Bhīmasena and Arjuna having seen, of the wrathful kṣatriyas.)
Then, at that moment, a more terrible sound arose in the forest after Bhīmasena and Arjuna were seen by the wrathful kṣatriyas. (03-254-1)
तेषां ध्वजाग्राण्यभिवीक्ष्य राजा; स्वयं दुरात्मा कुरुपुङ्गवानाम्। जयद्रथो याज्ञसेनीमुवाच; रथे स्थितां भानुमतीं हतौजाः ॥०३-२५४-२॥

(Of them, having looked upon the standards' tops, the king himself, wicked-souled among the foremost of Kurus, Jayadratha, said to Yājñasenī, standing in the chariot, the radiant one, whose energy was destroyed.)
Jayadratha, the wicked-souled king and foremost among the Kurus, having looked upon their standard-tops, spoke to Yājñasenī (Draupadī), who stood radiant yet exhausted in the chariot. (03-254-2)
आयान्तीमे पञ्च रथा महान्तो; मन्ये च कृष्णे पतयस्तवैते। सा जानती ख्यापय नः सुकेशि; परं परं पाण्डवानां रथस्थम् ॥०३-२५४-३॥
āyāntīme pañca rathā mahānto; manye ca kṛṣṇe patayastavaite. sā jānatī khyāpaya naḥ sukeśi; paraṃ paraṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ rathastham ॥03-254-3॥
[आयान्ति (āyānti) - are coming; इमे (ime) - these; पञ्च (pañca) - five; रथाः (rathāḥ) - chariots; महान्तः (mahāntaḥ) - great; मन्न्ये (manye) - I think; च (ca) - and; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - O Krishna; पतयः (patayaḥ) - lords; तव (tava) - your; एते (ete) - these; सा (sā) - she; जानती (jānatī) - knowing; ख्यापय (khyāpaya) - tell; नः (naḥ) - to us; सुकेशि (sukeśi) - O Sukeśi; परम् (param) - each; परम् (param) - each; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; रथस्थम् (rathastham) - seated in the chariot;]
(Are coming these five great chariots; I think, and O Krishna, these are your lords. She knowing, tell us, O Sukeśi, each, each of the Pāṇḍavas seated in the chariot.)
These five great chariots are approaching; I think, O Krishna, these are your lords. O Sukeśi, you who know, tell us, each of the Pāṇḍavas seated in the chariot. (03-254-3)

किं ते ज्ञातैर्मूढ महाधनुर्धरै; रनायुष्यं कर्म कृत्वातिघोरम्। एते वीराः पतयो मे समेता; न वः शेषः कश्चिदिहास्ति युद्धे ॥०३-२५४-४॥
kiṁ te jñātair mūḍha mahādhanurdharaiḥ; raṇa-āyuṣyaṁ karma kṛtvāti-ghoram. ete vīrāḥ patayo me sametā; na vaḥ śeṣaḥ kaścid iha asti yuddhe ॥03-254-4॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; ते (te) - to you; ज्ञातैः (jñātaiḥ) - with kinsmen; मूढ (mūḍha) - confused; महाधनुर्धरैः (mahādhanurdharaiḥ) - great bow-bearers; रणायुष्यं (raṇa-āyuṣyam) - battle-life; कर्म (karma) - deed; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; अति-घोरम् (ati-ghoram) - very terrible; एते (ete) - these; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; पतयः (patayaḥ) - lords; मे (me) - my; समेता (sametā) - assembled; न (na) - not; वः (vaḥ) - of you; शेषः (śeṣaḥ) - remaining; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; इह (iha) - here; अस्ति (asti) - exists; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in the battle;]
(What to you with kinsmen, confused great bow-bearers, having done battle-life deed very terrible? These heroes, my lords, assembled; not of you remaining anyone here exists in battle.)
What is the use to you of your kinsmen, confused great bow-bearers, having performed a most terrible deed in battle? These heroes, my lords, have assembled; none of you remain here in battle. (03-254-4)
आख्यातव्यं त्वेव सर्वं मुमूर्षो; र्मया तुभ्यं पृष्टया धर्म एषः। न मे व्यथा विद्यते त्वद्भयं वा; सम्पश्यन्त्याः सानुजं धर्मराजम् ॥०३-२५४-५॥
ākhyātavyaṁ tveva sarvaṁ mumūrṣo; rmayā tubhyaṁ pṛṣṭayā dharma eṣaḥ. na me vyathā vidyate tvadbhayaṁ vā; sampaśyantyāḥ sānujaṁ dharmarājam ॥03-254-5॥
[आख्यातव्यं (ākhyātavyam) - to be spoken; to be declared; तु (tu) - but; however; एव (eva) - certainly; surely; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; everything; मुमूर्षोः (mumūrṣoḥ) - of one wishing to die; (genitive singular of mumūrṣu); मया (mayā) - by me; तुभ्यम् (tubhyam) - to you; पृष्टया (pṛṣṭayā) - having been asked; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; duty; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; for me; व्यथा (vyathā) - pain; distress; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; is found; त्वद्भयं (tvadbhayam) - fear of you; वा (vā) - or; सम्पश्यन्त्याः (sampaśyantyāḥ) - of one seeing (of myself, as I see); सानुजम् (sānujam) - with brothers; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharma king; (Yama);]
(To be declared, but indeed, all, of the dying (of one wishing to die), by me, to you, having been asked—this is righteousness. Not to me, pain exists or fear of you, for one seeing the King of Dharma with his brothers.)
Everything that is to be declared must indeed be told to you by me, one who is about to die, when you have asked; this is righteousness. There is no pain or fear of you for me, as I behold Dharmarāja with his brothers. (03-254-5)
यस्य ध्वजाग्रे नदतो मृदङ्गौ; नन्दोपनन्दौ मधुरौ युक्तरूपौ। एतं स्वधर्मार्थविनिश्चयज्ञं; सदा जनाः कृत्यवन्तोऽनुयान्ति ॥०३-२५४-६॥
yasya dhvajāgre nadato mṛdaṅgau; nandopanandau madhurau yuktarūpau। etaṃ svadharmārthaviniścayajñaṃ; sadā janāḥ kṛtyavanto'nuyānti ॥03-254-6॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; ध्वजाग्रे (dhvajāgre) - on the top of the banner; नदतो (nadato) - roaring; मृदङ्गौ (mṛdaṅgau) - two drums; नन्दोपनन्दौ (nandopanandau) - Nanda and Upananda (names, or joy and increase); मधुरौ (madhurau) - sweet; pleasant; युक्तरूपौ (yuktarūpau) - having a fitting form; एतं (etaṃ) - this (person); स्वधर्मार्थविनिश्चयज्ञं (svadharmārthaviniścayajñaṃ) - knowing the determination of right conduct and purpose; सदा (sadā) - always; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; कृत्यवन्तः (kṛtyavantaḥ) - those who have duties; अनुयान्ति (anuyānti) - follow;]
(Of whom, on the top of the banner, roaring, two drums, Nanda and Upananda, sweet, having a fitting form; this knower of the determination of right conduct and purpose, always people with duties follow.)
People who have duties always follow him—whose banner's top has two drums, Nanda and Upananda, sounding sweetly and fittingly arranged, who knows the determination of right conduct and purpose. (03-254-6)
य एष जाम्बूनदशुद्धगौरः; प्रचण्डघोणस्तनुरायताक्षः। एतं कुरुश्रेष्ठतमं वदन्ति; युधिष्ठिरं धर्मसुतं पतिं मे ॥०३-२५४-७॥
ya eṣa jāmbūnadaśuddhagauraḥ; pracaṇḍaghoṇastanurāyatākṣaḥ. etaṃ kuruśreṣṭhatamaṃ vadanti; yudhiṣṭhiraṃ dharmasutaṃ patiṃ me ॥03-254-7॥
[य (ya) - who; एष (eṣa) - this (man); जाम्बूनदशुद्धगौरः (jāmbūnadaśuddhagauraḥ) - pure-golden-complexioned; प्रचण्डघोणः (pracaṇḍaghoṇaḥ) - having a prominent nose; तनुः (tanuḥ) - slender; आयताक्षः (āyatākṣaḥ) - broad-eyed; एतं (etaṃ) - him; कुरुश्रेष्ठतमम् (kuruśreṣṭhatamam) - the foremost of the Kurus; वदन्ति (vadanti) - they call; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; धर्मसुतम् (dharmasutam) - son of Dharma; पतिम् (patim) - lord; मे (me) - my;]
(Who this (person), pure-golden-complexioned, having a prominent nose, slender, broad-eyed— him, the foremost of the Kurus, they call (as) Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, my lord.)
This man who is of pure golden complexion, with a prominent nose, slender and broad-eyed— they call him Yudhishthira, the foremost Kuru, the son of Dharma, my lord. (03-254-7)
अप्येष शत्रोः शरणागतस्य; दद्यात्प्राणान्धर्मचारी नृवीरः। परैह्येनं मूढ जवेन भूतये; त्वमात्मनः प्राञ्जलिर्न्यस्तशस्त्रः ॥०३-२५४-८॥
apyeṣa śatroḥ śaraṇāgatasya; dadyāt prāṇān dharmacārī nṛvīraḥ. paraiḥ hi enaṃ mūḍha javena bhūtaye; tvam ātmanaḥ prāñjalir nyastaśastraḥ ॥03-254-8॥
[अपि (api) - even; एष (eṣa) - this one; शत्रोः (śatroḥ) - of the enemy; शरणागतस्य (śaraṇāgatasya) - having taken refuge; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life; धर्मचारी (dharmacārī) - the one who abides by dharma; नृवीरः (nṛvīraḥ) - hero among men; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; हि (hi) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - him; मूढ (mūḍha) - deluded one; जवेन (javena) - quickly; भूतये (bhūtaye) - for the welfare; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - yourself; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; न्यस्तशस्त्रः (nyastaśastraḥ) - one who has laid down arms;]
(Even this one, though an enemy, having taken refuge, should receive life from the dharma-abiding hero among men. Quickly, indeed, by others, this deluded one, for welfare; you yourself, with joined palms, having laid down weapons.)
Even this one, although an enemy, having sought refuge, should receive his life from a righteous and heroic man. This deluded person would quickly be destroyed by others; therefore, you, with joined palms and having laid down your weapons, act for your own welfare. (03-254-8)
अथाप्येनं पश्यसि यं रथस्थं; महाभुजं शालमिव प्रवृद्धम्। संदष्टोष्ठं भ्रुकुटीसंहतभ्रुवं; वृकोदरो नाम पतिर्ममैषः ॥०३-२५४-९॥
athāpyenaṃ paśyasi yaṃ rathasthaṃ; mahābhujaṃ śālamiva pravṛddham। saṃdaṣṭoṣṭhaṃ bhrukuṭīsaṃhatabhruvaṃ; vṛkodaro nāma patirmamaiṣaḥ ॥03-254-9॥
[अथापि (athāpi) - now also; even so; एनं (enaṃ) - this one; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - you see; यं (yaṃ) - whom; रथस्थं (rathasthaṃ) - standing on the chariot; महाभुजं (mahābhujaṃ) - mighty-armed; शालम् (śālam) - śāla tree; इव (iva) - like; प्रवृद्धम् (pravṛddham) - grown tall; संदष्टोष्ठं (saṃdaṣṭoṣṭhaṃ) - with teeth-clenched lips; भ्रुकुटीसंहतभ्रुवं (bhrukuṭīsaṃhatabhruvaṃ) - with eyebrows knit together; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); नाम (nāma) - named; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord; मम (mama) - my; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this one is;]
(Now also you see this one, whom (while) standing on the chariot, mighty-armed, like a śāla tree grown tall, with teeth-clenched lips, with eyebrows knit together; Vṛkodara by name, lord, my this one is.)
Even now, you see the one on the chariot, with mighty arms, tall as a śāla tree, his lips clenched in anger, his brows knit together; this is Vṛkodara by name, my lord. (3-254-9)
आजानेया बलिनः साधु दान्ता; महाबलाः शूरमुदावहन्ति। एतस्य कर्माण्यतिमानुषाणि; भीमेति शब्दोऽस्य गतः पृथिव्याम् ॥०३-२५४-१०॥
ājāneyā balinaḥ sādhu dāntā; mahābalāḥ śūramudāvahanti. etasya karmāṇyatimānuṣāṇi; bhīmeti śabdo'sya gataḥ pṛthivyām ॥03-254-10॥
[आजानेया (ājāneyāḥ) (ājāneyāḥ) - born of horses; (metaphorically: horses;) बलिनः (balinaḥ) (balinaḥ) - strong ones; साधु (sādhu) (sādhu) - gentle; दान्ता (dāntāḥ) (dāntāḥ) - tamed; (controlled;) महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) (mahābalāḥ) - very strong; शूरम् (śūram) (śūram) - hero; उद्-आवहन्ति (ud-āvahanti) (ud-āvahanti) - bring forth; (produce;) एतस्य (etasya) (etasya) - of this; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) (karmāṇi) - deeds; अति-मानुषाणि (ati-mānuṣāṇi) (ati-mānuṣāṇi) - beyond human; (superhuman;) भीम (bhīma) (bhīma) - Bhima; (terrifying;) इति (iti) (iti) - thus; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) (śabdaḥ) - name; (word;) अस्य (asya) (asya) - of him; गतः (gataḥ) (gataḥ) - has gone; (become;) पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) (pṛthivyām) - on earth;]
(The horses, strong, gentle, tamed; very strong, bring forth a hero. His deeds are beyond human; the name "Bhima" has become (well-known) on earth (for him).)
The horses are strong, well-trained, and gentle; they draw forth a mighty hero. His deeds are superhuman; on earth, the name "Bhima" has spread as his (reputation). (03-254-10)
नास्यापराद्धाः शेषमिहाप्नुवन्ति; नाप्यस्य वैरं विस्मरते कदाचित्। वैरस्यान्तं संविधायोपयाति; पश्चाच्छान्तिं न च गच्छत्यतीव ॥०३-२५४-११॥
nāsyāparāddhāḥ śeṣam ihāpnuvanti; nāpy asya vairaṃ vismarate kadācit. vairasyāntaṃ saṃvidhāyopayāti; paścāc chāntiṃ na ca gacchaty atīva ॥03-254-11॥
[न (na) - not; अस्य (asya) - his; अपराद्धाः (aparāddhāḥ) - offenders; शेषम् (śeṣam) - rest; remainder; इह (iha) - here; आप्नुवन्ति (āpnuvanti) - attain; reach; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - also; अस्य (asya) - his; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; विस्मरते (vismarate) - forgets; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at any time; वैरस्य (vairasya) - of enmity; अन्तम् (antam) - end; संविधाय (saṃvidhāya) - having determined; making; उपयाति (upayāti) - approaches; attains; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; शान्तिम् (śāntim) - peace; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; attains; अतीव (atīva) - at all; exceedingly;]
(Not his offenders here attain the rest; nor indeed does he ever forget his enmity. Determining the end of enmity, he approaches; afterwards, he does not go to peace at all.)
His offenders here do not obtain the remainder; nor does he ever forget enmity. Even after determining the end of enmity, he pursues it, and afterwards he does not attain peace at all. (03-254-11)
मृदुर्वदान्यो धृतिमान्यशस्वी; जितेन्द्रियो वृद्धसेवी नृवीरः। भ्राता च शिष्यश्च युधिष्ठिरस्य; धनञ्जयो नाम पतिर्ममैषः ॥०३-२५४-१२॥
mṛdurvadānyo dhṛtimānyaśasvī; jitendriyo vṛddhasevī nṛvīraḥ. bhrātā ca śiṣyaśca yudhiṣṭhirasya; dhanañjayo nāma patirmamaiṣaḥ ॥03-254-12॥
[मृदु (mṛdu) - gentle; वदानीयः (vadānīyaḥ) - generous in speech (charitable); धृतिमान् (dhṛtimān) - firm; यशस्वी (yaśasvī) - illustrious; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - self-controlled; वृद्धसेवी (vṛddhasevī) - one who serves the elders; नृवीरः (nṛvīraḥ) - best among men; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; च (ca) - and; शिष्यः (śiṣyaḥ) - disciple; च (ca) - and; युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhishthira; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya; नाम (nāma) - by name; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; मम (mama) - my; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (is);]
(Gentle, charitable, firm, illustrious; self-controlled, serving the elders, hero among men. Brother and disciple of Yudhishthira; Dhananjaya by name, husband my this (is). (03-254-12))
He who is gentle, generous, resolute, illustrious, self-controlled, a servant of elders, and a hero among men—he, who is both the brother and disciple of Yudhishthira, is named Dhananjaya, and he is my husband. (03-254-12)
यो वै न कामान्न भयान्न लोभा; त्त्यजेद्धर्मं न नृशंसं च कुर्यात्। स एष वैश्वानरतुल्यतेजाः; कुन्तीसुतः शत्रुसहः प्रमाथी ॥०३-२५४-१३॥
yo vai na kāmān na bhayān na lobhāt; tyajed dharmaṃ na nṛśaṃsaṃ ca kuryāt. sa eṣa vaiśvānaratulyatejāḥ; kuntīsutaḥ śatrusahaḥ pramāthī ॥03-254-13॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; कामात् (kāmāt) - from desire; न (na) - not; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; न (na) - not; लोभात् (lobhāt) - from greed; त्यजेत् (tyajet) - would abandon; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; न (na) - not; नृशंसं (nṛśaṃsaṃ) - cruel; च (ca) - and; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would do; सः (saḥ) - he; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; वैश्वानरतुल्यतेजाः (vaiśvānaratulyatejāḥ) - having brilliance equal to Vaiśvānara (Agni); कुन्तीसुतः (kuntīsutaḥ) - Kuntī's son; शत्रुसहः (śatrusahaḥ) - endurer of enemies; प्रमाथी (pramāthī) - overwhelmer;]
(Who indeed not from desire, not from fear, not from greed would abandon dharma, nor would do cruelty; he, this having brilliance equal to Vaiśvānara, Kuntī's son, endurer of enemies, overwhelmer (he is).)
He who does not abandon dharma from desire, fear, or greed, nor acts cruelly—he, the son of Kuntī, with brilliance equal to Vaiśvānara, who endures and overwhelms enemies, is described here. (03-254-13)
यः सर्वधर्मार्थविनिश्चयज्ञो; भयार्तानां भयहर्ता मनीषी। यस्योत्तमं रूपमाहुः पृथिव्यां; यं पाण्डवाः परिरक्षन्ति सर्वे ॥०३-२५४-१४॥
yaḥ sarva-dharmārtha-viniścaya-jñaḥ; bhayārtānāṃ bhaya-hartā manīṣī. yasya uttamaṃ rūpam āhuḥ pṛthivyām; yaṃ pāṇḍavāḥ parirakṣanti sarve ॥03-254-14॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; सर्वधर्मार्थविनिश्चयज्ञः (sarva-dharmārtha-viniścaya-jñaḥ) - knower of the determination of all (सर्व) righteous duties and purposes (धर्म-अर्थ); भयार्तानाम् (bhayārtānām) - of those afflicted by fear; भयहर्ता (bhaya-hartā) - remover of fear; मनीषी (manīṣī) - wise; यस्यम् (yasya) - whose; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on earth; यम् (yam) - whom; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; परिरक्षन्ति (parirakṣanti) - protect; सर्वे (sarve) - all;]
(Who is the knower of the determination of all righteous duties and purposes; the remover of fear for those afflicted by fear, a wise one; whose supreme form they say is on earth; whom all the Pāṇḍavas protect.)
He who knows the resolution of all righteous duties and goals, who removes fear for the fearful, who is wise; whose supreme form is said to exist on earth, and whom all the Pāṇḍavas protect. (03-254-14)
प्राणैर्गरीयांसमनुव्रतं वै; स एष वीरो नकुलः पतिर्मे। यः खड्गयोधी लघुचित्रहस्तो; महांश्च धीमान्सहदेवोऽद्वितीयः ॥०३-२५४-१५॥
prāṇair garīyāṁs amanuvrataṁ vai; sa eṣa vīro nakulaḥ patir me. yaḥ khaḍgayodhī laghucitrahasto; mahāṁś ca dhīmān sahadevo'dvitīyaḥ ॥03-254-15॥
[प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - by life-breaths; by the vital forces; गरीयांस् (garīyāṁs) - greater; more weighty; अनुव्रतं (anuvratam) - devoted; one who follows faithfully; वै (vai) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; एष (eṣa) - this; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; strong one; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; master; मे (me) - my; यः (yaḥ) - who; खड्गयोधी (khaḍgayodhī) - sword-fighter; wielder of sword; लघुचित्रहस्तः (laghucitrahastaḥ) - of light and skillful hand; महान् (mahān) - great; च (ca) - and; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; intelligent; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; अद्वितीयः (advitīyaḥ) - without a second; unrivaled;]
(By life-breaths greater is devoted indeed; he this hero Nakula is my husband. Who sword-fighter of light skillful hand; and great wise Sahadeva, unrivaled.)
Nakula, this heroic man, who is more devoted than life itself, is my husband. And Sahadeva, who is a sword-fighter with a light and skillful hand, is great, wise, and without equal. (03-254-15)
यस्याद्य कर्म द्रक्ष्यसे मूढसत्त्व; शतक्रतोर्वा दैत्यसेनासु सङ्ख्ये। शूरः कृतास्त्रो मतिमान्मनीषी; प्रियङ्करो धर्मसुतस्य राज्ञः ॥०३-२५४-१६॥
yasyādya karma drakṣyase mūḍhasattva; śatakratorvā daityasenāsu saṅkhye। śūraḥ kṛtāstro matimānmanīṣī; priyaṅkaro dharmasutasya rājñaḥ ॥03-254-16॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; आद्य (ādya) - today; कर्म (karma) - deed; द्रक्ष्यसे (drakṣyase) - you will see; मूढसत्त्व (mūḍhasattva) - deluded-minded one; शतक्रतोः (śatakratoḥ) - of Śatakratu (Indra); वा (vā) - or; दैत्यसेनासु (daityasenāsu) - among the armies of the Daityas; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; शूरः (śūraḥ) - hero; कृतास्त्रः (kṛtāstraḥ) - master of weapons; मतिमान् (matimān) - possessing intellect; मनीषी (manīṣī) - wise; प्रियङ्करो (priyaṅkaraḥ) - giving pleasure; धर्मसुतस्य (dharmasutasya) - of the son of Dharma; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - king;]
(Of whom today you will see the deed, O deluded-minded one; of Śatakratu or among the Daitya armies in battle—the hero, master of weapons, intelligent, wise, the pleasure-giver of King Dharmasuta.)
O deluded-minded one, today you will witness the deed—whether of Śatakratu (Indra) or among the armies of the Daityas in battle—of the hero who is master of weapons, intelligent, wise, and a delight to King Yudhishthira. (03-254-16)
य एष चन्द्रार्कसमानतेजा; जघन्यजः पाण्डवानां प्रियश्च। बुद्ध्या समो यस्य नरो न विद्यते; वक्ता तथा सत्सु विनिश्चयज्ञः ॥०३-२५४-१७॥
ya eṣa candrārkasamānatējā; jaghanyajaḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ priyaś ca. buddhyā samo yasya naro na vidyate; vaktā tathā satsu viniścayajñaḥ ॥03-254-17॥
[य (ya) - who; एष (eṣa) - this; चन्द्रार्कसमानतेजा (candrārkasamānatējā) - whose brilliance equals the moon and sun; जघन्यजः (jaghanyajaḥ) - youngest born; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṃ) - of the Pāṇḍavas; प्रियश्च (priyaś ca) - and dear; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - in intellect; समः (samaḥ) - equal; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; नरः (naraḥ) - man; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; वक्ता (vaktā) - speaker; तथा (tathā) - also; सत्सु (satsu) - among the good; विनिश्चयज्ञः (viniścayajñaḥ) - knower of decision;]
(Who this (person is) whose brilliance equals the moon and sun; youngest born of the Pāṇḍavas and dear; in intellect equal, of whom a man does not exist; a speaker also among the good, knower of decision.)
He who is this one, whose radiance is like that of the moon and sun, the youngest of the Pāṇḍavas and beloved by them, for whose intellect there is no equal among men, who is also an expert speaker among the virtuous and skilled in discernment. (03-254-17)
स एष शूरो नित्यममर्षणश्च; धीमान्प्राज्ञः सहदेवः पतिर्मे। त्यजेत्प्राणान्प्रविशेद्धव्यवाहं; न त्वेवैष व्याहरेद्धर्मबाह्यम् ॥०३-२५४-१८॥
sa eṣa śūro nityam amarṣaṇaś ca; dhīmān prājñaḥ sahadevaḥ patir me. tyajet prāṇān praviśet dhavyavāham; na tu eva eṣa vyāharet dharma-bāhyam ॥03-254-18॥
[स (sa) - he; एष (eṣa) - this; शूरः (śūraḥ) - heroic; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अमर्षणः (amarṣaṇaḥ) - patient; च (ca) - and; धीमान् (dhīmān) - intelligent; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - wise; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; मे (me) - my; त्यजेत् (tyajet) - might abandon; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; प्रविशेत् (praviśet) - might enter; हव्यवाहम् (dhavyavāham) - fire; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; एव (eva) - certainly; एष (eṣa) - this; व्याहरेत् (vyāharet) - might say; धर्मबाह्यम् (dharma-bāhyam) - against dharma;]
(He, this heroic (one), always patient and; intelligent, wise, Sahadeva, husband my. Might abandon life-breaths, might enter fire; but not certainly this (one) might say (anything) against dharma.)
He—this heroic, ever-patient, intelligent and wise Sahadeva, my husband—might give up his very life, or enter the fire; but he would certainly never say anything that is contrary to dharma. (03-254-18)
सदा मनस्वी क्षत्रधर्मे निविष्टः; कुन्त्याः प्राणैरिष्टतमो नृवीरः ॥०३-२५४-१८॥
sadā manasvī kṣatradharme niviṣṭaḥ; kuntyāḥ prāṇair iṣṭatamo nṛvīraḥ ॥03-254-18॥
[सदा (sadā) - always; मनस्वी (manasvī) - high-minded; क्षत्रधर्मे (kṣatradharme) - in the duty of a kṣatriya; निविष्टः (niviṣṭaḥ) - engaged; कुन्त्याः (kuntyāḥ) - of Kuntī; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - by (her) life-energies; इष्टतमः (iṣṭatamaḥ) - most beloved; नृवीरः (nṛvīraḥ) - hero among men;]
(Always high-minded, engaged in the duty of a kṣatriya; of Kuntī, by (her) life-energies, the most beloved, hero among men.)
He was always thoughtful and steadfast in the kṣatriya’s duty; the hero among men, most dear to Kuntī, even dearer than her own life. (03-254-18)
विशीर्यन्तीं नावमिवार्णवान्ते; रत्नाभिपूर्णां मकरस्य पृष्ठे। सेनां तवेमां हतसर्वयोधां; विक्षोभितां द्रक्ष्यसि पाण्डुपुत्रैः ॥०३-२५४-१९॥
viśīryantīṃ nāvam ivārṇavānte; ratnābhipūrṇāṃ makarasya pṛṣṭhe. senāṃ tavemāṃ hata-sarva-yodhāṃ; vikṣobhitāṃ drakṣyasi pāṇḍu-putraiḥ ॥03-254-19॥
[विशीर्यन्तीं (viśīryantīṃ) - falling apart; नावम् (nāvam) - boat; इव (iva) - like; अर्णव-अन्ते (arṇava-ante) - at the end of the ocean; रत्न-अभिपूर्णाम् (ratna-abhipūrṇām) - filled with gems; मकरस्य (makarasya) - of the makara (sea-animal); पृष्ठे (pṛṣṭhe) - on the back; सेनाम् (senām) - army; तव (tava) - your; इमाम् (imām) - this; हत-सर्व-योधाम् (hata-sarva-yodhām) - with all warriors slain; विक्षोभिताम् (vikṣobhitām) - agitated; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see; पाण्डुपुत्रैः (pāṇḍu-putraiḥ) - by the sons of Pandu;]
(Falling apart, like a boat at the end of the ocean, filled with gems, on the back of the makara; this army of yours, with all warriors slain, agitated, you will see by the sons of Pandu.)
You will see this army of yours, agitated and with all its warriors slain by the sons of Pandu, falling apart like a gem-filled boat on the back of a makara at the end of the ocean. (03-254-19)
इत्येते वै कथिताः पाण्डुपुत्रा; यांस्त्वं मोहादवमन्य प्रवृत्तः। यद्येतैस्त्वं मुच्यसेऽरिष्टदेहः; पुनर्जन्म प्राप्स्यसे जीव एव ॥०३-२५४-२०॥
ityete vai kathitāḥ pāṇḍuputrā; yāṃstvaṃ mohād avamanya pravṛttaḥ. yadyetais tvaṃ mucyase'riṣṭadehaḥ; punarjanma prāpsyase jīva eva ॥03-254-20॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एते (ete) - these; वै (vai) - indeed; कथिताः (kathitāḥ) - have been told; पाण्डुपुत्राः (pāṇḍuputrāḥ) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; यांश् (yāṃs) - whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मोहात् (mohāt) - out of delusion; अवमन्य (avamanya) - disregarding; प्रवृत्तः (pravṛttaḥ) - engaged; यदि (yadi) - if; एतैः (etaiḥ) - by these; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मुच्यसे (mucyase) - are released; अरिष्टदेहः (ariṣṭadehaḥ) - having the unsubdued body; पुनर्जन्म (punarjanma) - rebirth; प्राप्स्यसे (prāpsyase) - you will attain; जीव (jīva) - as an individual self; एव (eva) - indeed;]
(Thus these, indeed, have been told, the sons of Pāṇḍu; whom you, out of delusion, disregarding, have engaged against. If by these you are released, with unsubdued body, rebirth you will attain, as an individual self indeed.)
Thus, these sons of Pāṇḍu have been described, whom you, out of delusion, have disregarded and confronted. If you are released by them while still in your unsubdued body, you will indeed experience rebirth as an individual soul. (03-254-20)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥

ततः पार्थाः पञ्च पञ्चेन्द्रकल्पा; स्त्यक्त्वा त्रस्तान्प्राञ्जलींस्तान्पदातीन्। रथानीकं शरवर्षान्धकारं; चक्रुः क्रुद्धाः सर्वतः संनिगृह्य ॥०३-२५४-२१॥
tataḥ pārthāḥ pañca pañcendrakalpā; styaktvā trastān prāñjalīṁs tān padātīn. rathānīkaṁ śaravarṣāndhakāraṁ; cakruḥ kruddhāḥ sarvataḥ saṁnigṛhya ॥03-254-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā; पञ्च (pañca) - five; पञ्चेन्द्रकल्पाः (pañcendrakalpāḥ) - like five Indras; स्त्यक्त्वा (styaktvā) - having abandoned; त्रस्तान् (trastān) - the frightened; प्राञ्जलीन् (prāñjalīn) - with folded hands; तान् (tān) - those; पदातीन् (padātīn) - foot-soldiers; रथानीकम् (rathānīkam) - the chariot-division; शरवर्षान्धकारम् (śaravarṣāndhakāram) - darkened by showers of arrows; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; क्रुद्धाः (kruddhāḥ) - angry; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; संनिगृह्य (saṁnigṛhya) - having surrounded;]
(Then the sons of Pṛthā, five, like five Indras, having abandoned those frightened foot-soldiers with folded hands, made the chariot-division, darkened by showers of arrows, angry, having surrounded on all sides.)
Then the five sons of Pṛthā, like five Indras, having left behind those frightened foot-soldiers with folded hands, fiercely surrounded the whole chariot division and made it dark with showers of arrows. (03-254-21)
