ततो दिशः सम्प्रविहृत्य पार्था; मृगान्वराहान्महिषांश्च हत्वा। धनुर्धराः श्रेष्ठतमाः पृथिव्यां; पृथक्चरन्तः सहिता बभूवुः ॥०३-२५३-१॥
tato diśaḥ sampravihṛtya pārthāḥ; mṛgān varāhān mahiṣāṁś ca hatvā. dhanur-dharāḥ śreṣṭhatamāḥ pṛthivyām; pṛthak-carantaḥ sahitā babhūvuḥ ॥03-253-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सम्प्रविहृत्य (sampravihṛtya) - spreading out; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā; मृगान् (mṛgān) - deer; वराहान् (varāhān) - boars; महिषान् (mahiṣān) - buffaloes; च (ca) - and; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; धनुर्धराः (dhanur-dharāḥ) - bow-bearers; श्रेष्ठतमाः (śreṣṭhatamāḥ) - utterly best; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyām) - on earth; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; चरन्तः (carantaḥ) - moving; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became;]
(Then, spreading out in the directions, the sons of Pṛthā, having slain deer, boars, and buffaloes, the bow-bearers, the very best, on earth, moving separately, together, became.)
Then, the sons of Pṛthā, the best of bowmen, having spread out in all directions and slain deer, boars, and buffaloes, moved about the earth separately, yet together. (03-253-1)
ततो मृगव्यालगणानुकीर्णं; महावनं तद्विहगोपघुष्टम्। भ्रातॄंश्च तानभ्यवदद्युधिष्ठिरः; श्रुत्वा गिरो व्याहरतां मृगाणाम् ॥०३-२५३-२॥
tato mṛgavyālaganānukīrṇaṃ; mahāvanaṃ tadvihagopaghuṣṭam. bhrātṝṃś ca tān abhyavadad yudhiṣṭhiraḥ; śrutvā giro vyāharatāṃ mṛgāṇām ॥03-253-2॥

(Then, the great forest filled with flocks of deer and wild beasts, that resounded with birds, Yudhishthira addressed those brothers, having heard the voices of the deer uttering.)

आदित्यदीप्तां दिशमभ्युपेत्य; मृगद्विजाः क्रूरमिमे वदन्ति। आयासमुग्रं प्रतिवेदयन्तो; महाहवं शत्रुभिर्वावमानम् ॥०३-२५३-३॥

(Having approached the sun-lit direction, these animals and birds speak cruel; reporting intense hardship, (and) the great battle humiliated by enemies.)
Having reached the direction brightened by the sun, these animals and birds utter cruel sounds, reporting severe hardship and the distressful state of the great battle, humiliated by the enemies. (03-253-3)
क्षिप्रं निवर्तध्वमलं मृगैर्नो; मनो हि मे दूयति दह्यते च। बुद्धिं समाच्छाद्य च मे समन्यु; रुद्धूयते प्राणपतिः शरीरे ॥०३-२५३-४॥
kṣipraṃ nivartadhvam alaṃ mṛgair no; mano hi me dūyati dahyate ca. buddhiṃ samācchādya ca me samanyu; ruddhūyate prāṇapatiḥ śarīre ॥03-253-4॥
[क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; निवर्तध्वम् (nivartadhvam) - turn back (you all); अलम् (alam) - enough; मृगैः (mṛgaiḥ) - with the deer; नः (naḥ) - for us; मन्: (manas) - mind; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; दूयति (dūyati) - is tormented; दह्यते (dahyate) - is burned; च (ca) - and; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - understanding; समाच्छाद्य (samācchādya) - having covered; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; समन्यु (samanyu) - anger; रुद्धूयते (ruddhūyate) - is obstructed; प्राणपतिः (prāṇapatiḥ) - the lord of life-breath (soul); शरीरे (śarīre) - in the body;]
(Quickly turn back, enough with the deer for us; for indeed my mind is tormented and is burned. Covering my understanding and anger, and my lord of life-breath is obstructed in the body.)
Quickly turn back, enough of following the deer for us; my mind is truly tormented and burning. My anger covers my understanding, and the lord of my life-breath feels obstructed in my body. (03-253-4)
सरः सुपर्णेन हृतोरगं यथा; राष्ट्रं यथाराजकमात्तलक्ष्मि। एवंविधं मे प्रतिभाति काम्यकं; शौण्डैर्यथा पीतरसश्च कुम्भः ॥०३-२५३-५॥
saraḥ suparṇena hṛtoragaṃ yathā; rāṣṭraṃ yathā-rājakam-ātta-lakṣmi. evaṃ-vidhaṃ me pratibhāti kāmyakaṃ; śauṇḍaiḥ yathā pīta-rasaś ca kumbhaḥ ॥03-253-5॥
[सरः (saraḥ) - lake; सुपर्णेन (suparṇena) - by Suparṇa (Garuḍa, the divine eagle); हृत (hṛta) - taken; carried away; उरगं (uragam) - snake; यथा (yathā) - just as; राष्ट्रं (rāṣṭram) - kingdom; यथाराजकम् (yathā-rājakam) - without a king; आत्त (ātta) - taken; deprived; लक्ष्मि (lakṣmi) - fortune; prosperity; एवंविधं (evaṃ-vidham) - of such a kind; मे (me) - to me; प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - appears; seems; काम्यकं (kāmyakam) - Kamyaka (name of the forest); शौण्डैः (śauṇḍaiḥ) - by drunkards; यथा (yathā) - just as; पीतरसः (pīta-rasaḥ) - the sap having been drunk; च (ca) - and; कुम्भः (kumbhaḥ) - pot; pitcher;]
(Just as a lake from which a snake has been taken away by Suparṇa (Garuḍa); as a kingdom deprived of its fortune without a king; of such a kind to me appears Kamyaka, just as a pot, its sap having been drunk by drunkards.)
Kamyaka seems to me just like a lake after Garuḍa has carried away its snake, or a kingdom deprived of fortune without a king, or like a pitcher from which drunkards have drained the sap. (03-253-5)
ते सैन्धवैरत्यनिलौघवेगै; र्महाजवैर्वाजिभिरुह्यमानाः। युक्तैर्बृहद्भिः सुरथैर्नृवीरा; स्तदाश्रमायाभिमुखा बभूवुः ॥०३-२५३-६॥
te saindhavair aty-anila-augha-vegair mahā-javair vājibhir uhyamānāḥ। yuktair bṛhadbhiḥ surathair nṛvīrāḥ; tat āśramāya abhimukhā babhūvuḥ॥03-253-6॥
[ते (te) - they; सैन्धवैः (saindhavaiḥ) - with Sindhu-born (horses); अत्यनिलौघवेगैः (aty-anila-augha-vegaiḥ) - with exceeding wind-stream speed; महाजवैः (mahā-javaiḥ) - very swift; वाजिभिः (vājibhiḥ) - with horses; उह्यमानाः (uhyamānāḥ) - being drawn (carried along); युक्तैः (yuktaiḥ) - yoked (with); बृहद्भिः (bṛhadbhiḥ) - with great (large); सुरथैः (surathaiḥ) - with noble chariots; नृवीराः (nṛ-vīrāḥ) - heroic men; तत् (tat) - that; आश्रमाय (āśramāya) - toward the hermitage; अभिमुखाः (abhimukhāḥ) - facing (towards, heading for); बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became (were, proceeded);]
(They, with Sindhu-born horses of surpassing wind-stream speed, very swift, being drawn by yoked great noble chariots, heroic men, that (way) toward the hermitage, headed, became.)

तेषां तु गोमायुरनल्पघोषो; निवर्ततां वाममुपेत्य पार्श्वम्। प्रव्याहरत्तं प्रविमृश्य राजा; प्रोवाच भीमं च धनञ्जयं च ॥०३-२५३-७॥
teṣāṃ tu gomāyur analpa-ghoṣaḥ; nivartatāṃ vāmam upetya pārśvam। pravyāharat taṃ pravimṛśya rājā; provāca bhīmaṃ ca dhanañjayaṃ ca ॥03-253-7॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; तु (tu) - but; गोमायुः (gomāyuḥ) - jackal; अनल्पघोषः (analpa-ghoṣaḥ) - of great sound; निवर्तताम् (nivartatām) - while returning; वामम् (vāmam) - left; उपेत्य (upetya) - approaching; पार्श्वम् (pārśvam) - side; प्रव्याहरत् (pravyāharat) - cried out; तं (taṃ) - that; प्रविमृश्य (pravimṛśya) - considering; राजा (rājā) - the king; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; भीमं (bhīmam) - to Bhīma; च (ca) - and; धनञ्जयं (dhanañjayaṃ) - to Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); च (ca) - and;]
(Of them, but the jackal of great sound, while returning, approaching the left side, cried out; that, considering, the king said to Bhīma and to Dhanañjaya and.)
But as they were returning, a loud-voiced jackal approached their left side and cried out. Considering this, the king spoke to Bhīma and to Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). (03-253-7)
यथा वदत्येष विहीनयोनिः; शालावृको वाममुपेत्य पार्श्वम्। सुव्यक्तमस्मानवमन्य पापैः; कृतोऽभिमर्दः कुरुभिः प्रसह्य ॥०३-२५३-८॥
yathā vadatyeṣa vihīnayoniḥ; śālāvṛko vāmamupetya pārśvam. suvyaktamasmānavamanya pāpaiḥ; kṛto'bhimardaḥ kurubhiḥ prasahya ॥03-253-8॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; वदति (vadati) - he speaks; एष (eṣa) - this one; विहीनयोनिः (vihīnayoniḥ) - deprived of (noble) origin; शालावृकः (śālāvṛkaḥ) - jackal; वामम् (vāmam) - to the left; उपेत्य (upetya) - approaching; पार्श्वम् (pārśvam) - side; सुव्यक्तम् (suvyaktam) - clearly; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; अवमन्य (avamanya) - disregarding; पापैः (pāpaiḥ) - by wicked ones; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been done; अभिमर्दः (abhimardaḥ) - overpowering; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - by the Kauravas; प्रसह्य (prasahya) - by force;]
(As this one of base birth speaks; the jackal approaching the left side. Clearly us, disregarding, by the wicked ones; has been overpowered by the Kauravas by force.)
Just as this base-born one speaks, the jackal approaching from the left—clearly, we have been contemptuously overpowered by the wicked Kauravas by force. (03-253-8)
इत्येव ते तद्वनमाविशन्तो; महत्यरण्ये मृगयां चरित्वा। बालामपश्यन्त तदा रुदन्तीं; धात्रेयिकां प्रेष्यवधूं प्रियायाः ॥०३-२५३-९॥
ityeva te tadvanam āviśanto; mahaty araṇye mṛgayāṃ caritvā. bālām apaśyanta tadā rudantīṃ; dhātreyikāṃ preṣyavadhūṃ priyāyāḥ ॥03-253-9॥
[इति एव (iti eva) - thus indeed; ते (te) - they; तत् वनम् (tat vanam) - that forest; आविशन्तः (āviśantaḥ) - entering; महति अरण्ये (mahaty araṇye) - in the great forest; मृगयाम् (mṛgayām) - hunt; चरित्वा (caritvā) - having roamed; बालाम् (bālām) - the young girl; अपश्यन्त (apaśyanta) - they saw; तदा (tadā) - then; रुदन्तीम् (rudantīm) - weeping; धात्रेयिकाम् (dhātreyikām) - nurse's daughter; प्रेष्यवधूम् (preṣyavadhūm) - servant's wife; प्रियायाः (priyāyāḥ) - of (their) beloved;]
(Thus indeed they, entering that forest, having roamed in the great wilderness for hunting, then saw the young girl, the weeping nurse's daughter's servant's wife of their beloved.)

तामिन्द्रसेनस्त्वरितोऽभिसृत्य; रथादवप्लुत्य ततोऽभ्यधावत्। प्रोवाच चैनां वचनं नरेन्द्र; धात्रेयिकामार्ततरस्तदानीम् ॥०३-२५३-१०॥
tām indrasenas tvarito'bhisṛtya; rathād avalplutya tato'bhyadhāvat। provāca caināṃ vacanaṃ narendra; dhātreyikām ārtataras tadānīm ॥03-253-10॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; इन्द्रसेनः (indrasenaḥ) - Indrasena; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - swift; अभिसृत्य (abhisṛtya) - having approached; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; अवप्लुत्य (avalplutya) - having leaped down; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभ्यधावत् (abhyadhāvat) - rushed towards; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - to her; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; नरेन्द्रः (narendraḥ) - the king; धात्रेयिकाम् (dhātreyikām) - Dhātreyikā (the daughter of Dhātri); आर्ततरः (ārtataraḥ) - most distressed; तदानीम् (tadānīm) - at that time;]
(Her Indrasena, swift, having approached, from the chariot having leaped down, then rushed towards. Said and to her word the king, Dhātreyikā, most distressed at that time.)
Indrasena swiftly approached her, leapt down from the chariot and then rushed towards her. The king, being most distressed at that time, spoke a word to Dhātreyikā. (03-253-10)
किं रोदिषि त्वं पतिता धरण्यां; किं ते मुखं शुष्यति दीनवर्णम्। कच्चिन्न पापैः सुनृशंसकृद्भिः; प्रमाथिता द्रौपदी राजपुत्री ॥ अनिन्द्यरूपा सुविशालनेत्रा; शरीरतुल्या कुरुपुङ्गवानाम् ॥०३-२५३-११॥
kiṁ rodiṣi tvaṁ patitā dharaṇyāṁ; kiṁ te mukhaṁ śuṣyati dīnavarṇam. kaccinna pāpaiḥ sunṛśaṁsakṛdbhiḥ; pramāthitā draupadī rājaputrī ॥ anindyarūpā suviśālanetrā; śarīratulyā kurupuṅgavānām ॥03-253-11॥
[किं (kiṁ) - why; रोदिषि (rodiṣi) - are you weeping; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; पतिता (patitā) - fallen; धरण्यां (dharaṇyāṁ) - on the earth; किं (kiṁ) - why; ते (te) - your; मुखं (mukhaṁ) - face; शुष्यति (śuṣyati) - is drying up; दीनवर्णम् (dīnavarṇam) - with depressed color; कच्चिन्न (kaccinna) - surely not; पापैः (pāpaiḥ) - by the wicked; सुनृशंसकृद्भिः (sunṛśaṁsakṛdbhiḥ) - by the doers of great cruelty; प्रमाथिता (pramāthitā) - afflicted; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; अनिन्द्यरूपा (anindyārūpā) - of irreproachable form; सुविशालनेत्रा (suviśālanetrā) - with very large eyes; शरीरतुल्या (śarīratulyā) - equal in body; कुरुपुङ्गवानाम् (kurupuṅgavānām) - of the foremost among the Kurus;]
(Why are you weeping, you fallen on the earth? Why your face is drying up with a depressed color? Surely not by the wicked, doers of great cruelty, has been afflicted Draupadī the princess? Of irreproachable form, with very large eyes, equal in body to the foremost among the Kurus. (03-253-11))
Why are you crying, you who have fallen to the ground? Why is your face so dried and discolored? Surely, Draupadī, princess of irreproachable beauty and large eyes, equal in form to the best of the Kurus, has not been assaulted by wicked men of cruel deeds? (03-253-11)
यद्येव देवी पृथिवीं प्रविष्टा; दिवं प्रपन्नाप्यथ वा समुद्रम्। तस्या गमिष्यन्ति पदं हि पार्था; स्तथा हि सन्तप्यति धर्मराजः ॥०३-२५३-१२॥
yadyeva devī pṛthivīṃ praviṣṭā; divaṃ prapannāpyatha vā samudram। tasyā gamiṣyanti padaṃ hi pārthā; tathā hi santapyati dharmarājaḥ ॥03-253-12॥
[यद्येव (yadyeva) - if indeed; देवी (devī) - the goddess; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - earth (accusative singular); प्रविष्टा (praviṣṭā) - entered; दिवं (divaṃ) - heaven; प्रपन्ना (prapannā) - attained; अपि (api) - also; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; समुद्रम् (samudram) - the ocean; तस्या (tasyā) - her; गमिष्यन्ति (gamiṣyanti) - will go; पदं (padaṃ) - step, place; हि (hi) - indeed; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and his brothers); तथा (tathā) - so; हि (hi) - indeed; सन्तप्यति (santapyati) - grieves; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the king of dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira);]
(If indeed the goddess has entered the earth; or also attained heaven or the ocean, to her place the Pārthas will indeed go; so indeed Dharmarāja grieves.)
If the goddess has entered the earth, or gone to heaven, or to the ocean, then the Pārthas will surely go to her; thus indeed the king of dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira) is grieving. (03-253-12)
को हीदृशानामरिमर्दनानां; क्लेशक्षमाणामपराजितानाम्। प्राणैः समामिष्टतमां जिहीर्षे; दनुत्तमं रत्नमिव प्रमूढः ॥ न बुध्यते नाथवतीमिहाद्य; बहिश्चरं हृदयं पाण्डवानाम् ॥०३-२५३-१३॥
ko hīdṛśānām arimardanānām; kleśakṣamāṇām aparājitānām। prāṇaiḥ samāmiṣṭatamāṃ jihīrṣe; danuttamaṃ ratnam iva pramūḍhaḥ ॥ na budhyate nāthavatīm ihādya; bahiścaraṃ hṛdayaṃ pāṇḍavānām ॥03-253-13॥
[को (ko) (ko) - who; हि (hi) (hi) - indeed; ईदृशानाम् (īdṛśānām) (īdṛśānām) - of such; अरिमर्दनानाम् (arimardanānām) (arimardanānām) - of slayers of enemies; क्लेशक्षमाणाम् (kleśakṣamāṇām) (kleśakṣamāṇām) - of those who are able to endure hardship; अपराजितानाम् (aparājitānām) (aparājitānām) - of the unconquered; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) (prāṇaiḥ) - with lives; समामिष्टतमाम् (samāmiṣṭatamām) (samāmiṣṭatamām) - most equal and dear (as one's own life); जिहीर्षे (jihīrṣe) (jihīrṣe) - desires to take away; दनुत्तमम् (danuttamam) (danuttamam) - the highest wealth; रत्नम् (ratnam) (ratnam) - jewel; इव (iva) (iva) - like; प्रमूढः (pramūḍhaḥ) (pramūḍhaḥ) - deluded; न (na) (na) - not; बुध्यते (budhyate) (budhyate) - understands; नाथवतीम् (nāthavatīm) (nāthavatīm) - possessed of protectors; इह (iha) (iha) - here; अद्य (adya) (adya) - today; बहिःचरम् (bahiścaram) (bahiścaram) - outward-moving; हृदयम् (hṛdayam) (hṛdayam) - heart; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Who indeed, of such slayers of enemies, of those able to endure hardship and unconquered, desires to take away one most dear as life itself, the highest wealth, just as a deluded one (seeks) a jewel? (He) does not understand (that she is) possessed of protectors here today, the outward-moving heart of the Pāṇḍavas.)
Who, indeed, among such unconquered slayers of enemies, endurers of hardship, would desire to take away, as if deluded, the greatest treasure—one as dear as life itself—just as one seeks a jewel? He does not realize that, here today, she who possesses protectors is, in truth, the outward-going heart of the Pāṇḍavas. (03-253-13)
कस्याद्य कायं प्रतिभिद्य घोरा; महीं प्रवेक्ष्यन्ति शिताः शराग्र्याः। मा त्वं शुचस्तां प्रति भीरु विद्धि; यथाद्य कृष्णा पुनरेष्यतीति ॥ निहत्य सर्वान्द्विषतः समग्रा; न्पार्थाः समेष्यन्त्यथ याज्ञसेन्या ॥०३-२५३-१४॥

Today, whose body will be pierced by terrible, sharp arrow-tips and will enter the earth? Do not grieve for her, fearful one; know that today Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) will return again. When all enemies are slain, the Pāṇḍavas will be wholly reunited with Yājñasenī (Draupadī). (03-253-14)
