santiṣṭhata praharata tūrṇaṁ viparidhāvata। iti sma saindhavo rājā codayāmāsa tān nṛpān ॥03-255-1॥
[सन्तिष्ठत (santiṣṭhata) - stand firm; प्रहरत (praharata) - strike; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; विपरिधावत (viparidhāvata) - run around (run back and forth, encircle); इति (iti) - thus; स्म (sma) - indeed; सैन्धवः (saindhavaḥ) - the king of Sindhu; राजा (rājā) - king; चोदयामास (codayāmāsa) - urged; तान् (tān) - those (them); नृपान् (nṛpān) - kings;]
(Stand firm, strike, quickly run around. Thus indeed the king of Sindhu, the king, urged those kings.)
“Stand firm! Strike! Quickly, run around!” Thus indeed the king of Sindhu urged those kings. (03-255-1)
ततो घोरतरः शब्दो रणे समभवत्तदा। भीमार्जुनयमान्दृष्ट्वा सैन्यानां सयुधिष्ठिरान् ॥०३-२५५-२॥
tato ghorataraḥ śabdo raṇe samabhavattadā। bhīmārjunayamāndṛṣṭvā sainyānāṃ sayudhiṣṭhirān ॥03-255-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; घोरतरः (ghorataraḥ) - more terrible; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; तदा (tadā) - at that time; भीमार्जुनयमान् (bhīmārjunayamān) - Bhīma, Arjuna, Yama; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सैन्यानाम् (sainyānām) - of the armies; सयुधिष्ठिरान् (sayudhiṣṭhirān) - (those) with Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Then a more terrible sound in battle arose at that time, having seen Bhīma, Arjuna, Yama, and those with Yudhiṣṭhira of the armies.)
Then an even more terrible sound arose in the battle at that time when the armies saw Bhīma, Arjuna, Yama, and those accompanying Yudhiṣṭhira. (03-255-2)
शिबिसिन्धुत्रिगर्तानां विषादश्चाप्यजायत। तान्दृष्ट्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रान्व्याघ्रानिव बलोत्कटान् ॥०३-२५५-३॥
śibisindhutrigartānāṃ viṣādaś cāpy ajāyata। tān dṛṣṭvā puruṣavyāghrān vyāghrān iva balotkaṭān ॥03-255-3॥
[शिबिसिन्धुत्रिगर्तानाम् (śibisindhutrigartānām) - of the Śibis, Sindhus, and Trigartas; विषादः (viṣādaḥ) - distress; sadness; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अजायत (ajāyata) - arose; तान् (tān) - them; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पुरुषव्याघ्रान् (puruṣavyāghrān) - tiger-men; men like tigers; व्याघ्रानिव (vyāghrān iva) - like tigers; बलोत्कटान् (balotkaṭān) - of formidable strength;]
(Of the Śibis, Sindhus, and Trigartas, distress and also arose. Having seen them—men like tigers, of formidable strength, like tigers.)
Distress also arose among the Śibis, Sindhus, and Trigartas, when they saw those men who were like tigers in might, as if they were tigers themselves. (03-255-3)
हेमचित्रसमुत्सेधां सर्वशैक्यायसीं गदाम्। प्रगृह्याभ्यद्रवद्भीमः सैन्धवं कालचोदितम् ॥०३-२५५-४॥
hemacitra-samutsedhāṁ sarvaśaikyāyasīṁ gadām। pragṛhyābhyadravad bhīmaḥ saindhavaṁ kālacoditam॥03-255-4॥
[हेमचित्रसमुत्सेधाम् (hemacitra-samutsedhām) - having golden-ornamented prominence; सर्वशैक्यायसीम् (sarvaśaikyāyasīm) - entirely of iron; गदाम् (gadām) - mace; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken up; अभ्यद्रवत्त् (abhyadravat) - rushed towards; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; सैन्धवम् (saindhavam) - the Sindhu prince; कालचोदितम् (kālacoditam) - impelled by Time;]
(Having taken up the mace, entirely of iron, having golden-ornamented prominence, Bhīma, impelled by Time, rushed towards the Sindhu prince.)
Bhīma, taking up his mace entirely made of iron with golden-ornamented prominence, rushed at the Sindhu prince, impelled by Time. (03-255-4)
तदन्तरमथावृत्य कोटिकाश्योऽभ्यहारयत्। महता रथवंशेन परिवार्य वृकोदरम् ॥०३-२५५-५॥
tad-antaram-athā-vṛtya koṭikāśyaḥ abhyāharayat. mahatā ratha-vaṁśena parivārya vṛkodaram ॥03-255-5॥
[तदन्तरम् (tad-antaram) - then; afterwards; अथ (atha) - now; then; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having turned; having encircled; कोटिकाश्यः (koṭikāśyaḥ) - Koṭikāśya (proper name); अभ्यहारयत् (abhyāharayat) - brought near; caused to approach; महता (mahatā) - with great; with large; रथवंशेन (ratha-vaṁśena) - by chariot troop; by chariot division; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; वृकोदरम् (vṛkodaram) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma, proper name);]
(Then, having turned, Koṭikāśya brought (him) near. Having surrounded Vṛkodara with a great chariot division.)
Then, Koṭikāśya turned and, having surrounded Vṛkodara with a great chariot division, brought him close. (03-255-5)
शक्तितोमरनाराचैर्वीरबाहुप्रचोदितैः। कीर्यमाणोऽपि बहुभिर्न स्म भीमोऽभ्यकम्पत ॥०३-२५५-६॥
śakti-tomara-nārācair vīra-bāhu-pracoditaiḥ। kīryamāṇaḥ api bahubhiḥ na sma bhīmaḥ abhyakampata॥03-255-6॥
[शक्ति (śakti) - lance; तोमर (tomara) - iron javelin; नाराचैः (nārācaiḥ) - by arrows; वीरबाहु (vīra-bāhu) - by heroes' arms; प्रचोदितैः (pracoditaiḥ) - impelled; कीर्यमाणः (kīryamāṇaḥ) - being showered; अपि (api) - even; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - indeed; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; अभ्यकम्पत् (abhyakampat) - trembled;]
(Even being showered by many (weapons) such as lances, iron javelins, and arrows, impelled by heroes' arms, Bhīma indeed did not tremble.)
Though Bhīma was showered by many lances, iron javelins and arrows, hurled by the arms of heroes, he did not tremble. (03-255-6)
गजं तु सगजारोहं पदातींश्च चतुर्दश। जघान गदया भीमः सैन्धवध्वजिनीमुखे ॥०३-२५५-७॥
gajaṃ tu sagajārohaṃ padātīṃś ca caturdaśa। jaghāna gadayā bhīmaḥ saindhava-dhvajinī-mukhe ॥03-255-7॥
[गजम् (gajam) - elephant; तु (tu) - but; सगजारोहम् (sa-gajāroham) - with elephant-driver; पदातीन् (padātīn) - foot-soldiers; च (ca) - and; चतुर्दश (caturdaśa) - fourteen; जघान (jaghāna) - (he) struck down; गदया (gadayā) - with mace; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; सैन्धवध्वजिनीमुखे (saindhava-dhvajinī-mukhe) - at the fore of the Sindhu army;]
(The elephant but with elephant-driver, and fourteen foot-soldiers, struck down with mace Bhīma at the fore of the Sindhu army.)
Bhīma struck down the elephant with its rider and fourteen foot-soldiers with his mace at the forefront of the Sindhu army. (03-255-7)
पार्थः पञ्चशताञ्शूरान्पार्वतीयान्महारथान्। परीप्समानः सौवीरं जघान ध्वजिनीमुखे ॥०३-२५५-८॥
pārthaḥ pañcaśatāñ śūrān pārvatīyān mahārathān। parīpsamānaḥ sauvīraṃ jaghāna dhvajinīmukhe ॥03-255-8॥
[पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; पञ्चशतान् (pañcaśatān) - five hundred; शूरान् (śūrān) - heroes; पार्वतीयान् (pārvatīyān) - of the mountain region; महारथान् (mahārathān) - great chariot-warriors; परीप्समानः (parīpsamānaḥ) - desiring to seize; सौवीरं (sauvīraṃ) - the Sauvīra (king or warrior); जघान (jaghāna) - slew; ध्वजिनीमुखे (dhvajinīmukhe) - at the head of the army;]
(Arjuna, five hundred heroes of the mountain region, great chariot-warriors, desiring to seize, the Sauvīra, slew at the head of the army.)
Arjuna, desiring to capture, slew the Sauvīra who was at the head of the army, along with five hundred heroic great chariot-warriors from the mountain region. (03-255-8)
राजा स्वयं सुवीराणां प्रवराणां प्रहारिणाम्। निमेषमात्रेण शतं जघान समरे तदा ॥०३-२५५-९॥
rājā svayaṃ suvīrāṇāṃ pravarāṇāṃ prahāriṇām। nimeṣamātreṇa śataṃ jaghāna samare tadā॥03-255-9॥
[राजा (rājā) - king; स्वयं (svayaṃ) - himself; सुवीराणां (suvīrāṇām) - of excellent heroes; प्रवराणां (pravarāṇām) - of the best; प्रहारिणाम् (prahāriṇām) - of the attackers; निमेषमात्रेण (nimeṣamātreṇa) - in the space of a wink; शतं (śatam) - a hundred; जघान (jaghāna) - he slew; समरे (samare) - in battle; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(The king himself, of excellent heroes, of the best, of the attackers, in the space of a wink, a hundred, he slew, in battle, then.)
Then, the king himself slew a hundred of the best and most valiant attackers in battle in the space of a single wink. (03-255-9)
ददृशे नकुलस्तत्र रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य खड्गधृक्। शिरांसि पादरक्षाणां बीजवत्प्रवपन्मुहुः ॥०३-२५५-१०॥
dadṛśe nakulas tatra rathāt praskandya khaḍgadhṛk | śirāṃsi pādarakṣāṇāṃ bījavat pravapan muhuḥ ॥03-255-10॥
[ददृशे (dadṛśe) - was seen; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; तत्र (tatra) - there; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; प्रस्कन्द्य (praskandya) - having leapt down; खड्गधृक् (khaḍgadhṛk) - holding a sword; शिरांसि (śirāṃsi) - heads; पादरक्षाणां (pādarakṣāṇām) - of foot-soldiers; बीजवत् (bījavat) - like seeds; प्रवपन् (pravapan) - scattering; मुः (muhuḥ) - again and again;]
(Nakula was seen there having leapt down from the chariot, holding a sword, scattering the heads of the foot-soldiers like seeds again and again.)
There, Nakula was seen leaping down from his chariot, sword in hand, scattering the heads of the foot-soldiers again and again like seeds. (03-255-10)
सहदेवस्तु संयाय रथेन गजयोधिनः। पातयामास नाराचैर्द्रुमेभ्य इव बर्हिणः ॥०३-२५५-११॥
sahadevastu saṃyāya rathena gajayodhinaḥ। pātayāmāsa nārācairdṛumebhya iva barhiṇaḥ ॥03-255-11॥
[सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; तु (tu) - but; संयाय (saṃyāya) - having approached; रथेन (rathena) - with (his) chariot; गजयोधिनः (gajayodhinaḥ) - the elephant-warriors; पातयामास (pātayāmāsa) - he made fall; नाराचैः (nārācaiḥ) - with iron arrows; द्रुमेभ्यः (drumebhyaḥ) - from the trees; इव (iva) - like; बर्हिणः (barhiṇaḥ) - peacocks;]
(Sahadeva but having approached with (his) chariot the elephant-warriors he made fall with iron arrows from the trees like peacocks.)
But Sahadeva, having approached with his chariot, struck down the elephant-warriors with iron arrows, like peacocks falling from trees. (03-255-11)
ततस्त्रिगर्तः सधनुरवतीर्य महारथात्। गदया चतुरो वाहान्राज्ञस्तस्य तदावधीत् ॥०३-२५५-१२॥
tatas trigartaḥ sadhanur avatīrya mahārathāt। gadayā caturo vāhān rājñas tasya tadā vadhīt॥03-255-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्रिगर्तः (trigartaḥ) - Trigarta (the king named Trigarta); सधनुः (sadhanuḥ) - with bow; अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having descended; महारथात् (mahārathāt) - from the great chariot; गदया (gadayā) - with a mace; चतुरः (caturo) - four; वाहान् (vāhān) - horses; राज्ञः (rājñas) - of the king; तस्य (tasya) - his; तदा (tadā) - then; अवधीत् (avadhīt) - he slew;]
(Then Trigarta, with bow, having descended from the great chariot, with a mace (he) slew four horses of that king then.)
Then Trigarta, armed with a bow, descended from his great chariot and with his mace slew four horses of that king at that moment. (03-255-12)
तमभ्याशगतं राजा पदातिं कुन्तिनन्दनः। अर्धचन्द्रेण बाणेन विव्याधोरसि धर्मराट् ॥०३-२५५-१३॥
tam abhyāśagataṃ rājā padātiṃ kuntinandanaḥ। ardhacandreṇa bāṇena vivyādhorasi dharmarāṭ॥03-255-13॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अभ्याशगतं (abhyāśagatam) - approached; राजा (rājā) - the king; पदातिं (padātiṃ) - the foot-soldier; कुन्तिनन्दनः (kuntinandanaḥ) - Kunti's son; अर्धचन्द्रेण (ardhacandreṇa) - with (an) ardhachandra (crescent-shaped arrow); बाणेन (bāṇena) - with an arrow; विव्याध (vivyādha) - pierced; उरसि (urasi) - in the chest; धर्मराट् (dharmarāṭ) - the king of dharma;]
(Kunti's son, the king, pierced that approached foot-soldier in the chest with an ardhachandra arrow, the king of dharma.)
Kuntinandana, the king of dharma, pierced the approaching foot-soldier in the chest with an ardhachandra arrow. (03-255-13)
स भिन्नहृदयो वीरो वक्त्राच्छोणितमुद्वमन्। पपाताभिमुखः पार्थं छिन्नमूल इव द्रुमः ॥०३-२५५-१४॥
sa bhinnahṛdayo vīro vaktrācchoṇitamudvaman। papātābhimukhaḥ pārthaṃ chinnamūla iva drumaḥ ॥03-255-14॥
[स (sa) - he; भिन्नहृदयः (bhinna-hṛdayaḥ) - having a pierced heart; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; वक्त्रात् (vaktrāt) - from (his) mouth; छोणितम् (choṇitam) - blood; उद्वमन् (udvaman) - vomiting forth; पपात (papāta) - fell; अभिमुखः (abhimukhaḥ) - facing towards; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); छिन्नमूलः (chinna-mūlaḥ) - having the root cut; इव (iva) - like; द्रुमः (drumaḥ) - tree;]
(He, with pierced heart, the hero, from (his) mouth blood vomiting forth, fell facing Pārtha, like a tree with its root cut.)
With his heart pierced, the valiant hero vomited blood from his mouth and fell facing Arjuna, like a tree whose root has been severed. (03-255-14)
इन्द्रसेनद्वितीयस्तु रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य धर्मराट्। हताश्वः सहदेवस्य प्रतिपेदे महारथम् ॥०३-२५५-१५॥
indrasenadvitīyas tu rathāt praskandya dharmarāṭ। hatāśvaḥ sahadevasya pratipede mahāratham ॥03-255-15॥
[इन्द्रसेनद्वितीयस् (indrasenadvitīyas) - having Indrasena as second (charioteer); तु (tu) - but; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; प्रस्कन्द्य (praskandya) - having leapt down; धर्मराट् (dharmarāṭ) - the king of righteousness; हताश्वः (hatāśvaḥ) - whose horses were slain; सहदेवस्य (sahadevasya) - of Sahadeva; प्रतिपेदे (pratipede) - obtained; महारथम् (mahāratham) - the great chariot;]
(Having Indrasena as second but, from the chariot having leapt down, the king of righteousness, whose horses were slain, of Sahadeva, obtained the great chariot.)
But the king of righteousness, whose horses had been slain and whose charioteer was Indrasena, leapt down from his own chariot and mounted the great chariot of Sahadeva. (03-255-15)
नकुलं त्वभिसन्धाय क्षेमङ्करमहामुखौ। उभावुभयतस्तीक्ष्णैः शरवर्षैरवर्षताम् ॥०३-२५५-१६॥
nakulaṃ tv abhisandhāya kṣemaṅkaramahāmukhau। ubhāv ubhayatas tīkṣṇaiḥ śaravarṣair avarṣatām ॥03-255-16॥
[नकुलम् (nakulam) - Nakulam (Nakul, accusative singular); तु (tu) - but; however; अभिसन्धाय (abhisandhāya) - having aimed at; targeting; क्षेमङ्कर (kṣemaṅkara) - Kṣemaṅkara (a proper name); महामुखौ (mahāmukhau) - Mahāmukha (a proper name; dual); उभौ (ubhau) - both; उभयतस् (ubhayatas) - on both sides; तीक्ष्णैः (tīkṣṇaiḥ) - sharp; शरवर्षैः (śaravarṣaiḥ) - with showers of arrows; अवर्षताम् (avarṣatām) - rained (dual, aorist);]
(But having aimed at Nakula, Kṣemaṅkara and Mahāmukha, both, on both sides, with sharp showers of arrows, rained.)
However, after targeting Nakula, both Kṣemaṅkara and Mahāmukha attacked simultaneously from both sides, raining down sharp showers of arrows upon him. (03-255-16)
तौ शरैरभिवर्षन्तौ जीमूताविव वार्षिकौ। एकैकेन विपाठेन जघ्ने माद्रवतीसुतः ॥०३-२५५-१७॥
tau śarair abhivarṣantau jīmūtāv iva vārṣikau। ekaikena vipāṭhena jaghne mādravatī-sutaḥ ॥03-255-17॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; अभिवर्षन्तौ (abhivarṣantau) - showering upon (raining down); जीमूतौ (jīmūtau) - clouds; इव (iva) - like; वार्षिकौ (vārṣikau) - of the rainy season; एकैकेन (ekaikena) - with each one; विपाठेन (vipāṭhena) - with a shot (piercing blow); जघ्ने (jaghne) - struck (killed, hit); माद्रवतीसुतः (mādravatī-sutaḥ) - the son of Mādravatī;]
(Those two, with arrows raining down, like clouds of the rainy season; with each (arrow) by a shot, struck the son of Mādravatī.)
Those two, showering arrows like clouds in the rainy season, each struck the son of Mādravatī with a shot. (03-255-17)
त्रिगर्तराजः सुरथस्तस्याथ रथधूर्गतः। रथमाक्षेपयामास गजेन गजयानवित् ॥०३-२५५-१८॥
trigartarājaḥ surathas tasyātha rathadhūr gataḥ। ratham ākṣepayām āsa gajena gajayānavit ॥03-255-18॥
[त्रिगर्तराजः (trigartarājaḥ) - the king of Trigarta; सुरथः (surathaḥ) - Suratha; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अथ (atha) - then; रथधूर्गतः (rathadhūr-gataḥ) - having gone to the yoke of the chariot; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आक्षेपयाम् (ākṣepayām) - to toss; आस (āsa) - he caused; गजेन (gajena) - with (his) elephant; गजयानवित् (gajayānavit) - accompanied by the elephant-vehicle;]
(The king of Trigarta, Suratha, then, having reached the chariot-yoke of him, caused the chariot to be tossed with (his) elephant, accompanied by the elephant-vehicle.)
Suratha, the king of Trigarta, then approached his chariot-yoke and, with his elephant and accompanied by the elephant-vehicle, caused the chariot to be tossed. (03-255-18)
नकुलस्त्वपभीस्तस्माद्रथाच्चर्मासिपाणिमान्। उद्भ्रान्तं स्थानमास्थाय तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥०३-२५५-१९॥
nakulas tv abhītas asmād rathāc carmāsi-pāṇimān। udbhrāntaṃ sthānam āsthāya tasthau girir ivācalah ॥03-255-19॥

(Nakula, but fearless, from that (place), from the chariot, and (with) shield (and) sword in hand, having assumed a disturbed place, stood like a mountain unmoving.)
But Nakula, fearless, descended from the chariot with sword and shield in hand, and stood firm in an agitated spot, like an immovable mountain. (03-255-19)
सुरथस्तं गजवरं वधाय नकुलस्य तु। प्रेषयामास सक्रोधमभ्युच्छ्रितकरं ततः ॥०३-२५५-२०॥
surathas taṁ gajavaraṁ vadhāya nakulasya tu। preṣayāmāsa sakrodham abhyucchritakaraṁ tataḥ॥03-255-20॥

नकुलस्तस्य नागस्य समीपपरिवर्तिनः। सविषाणं भुजं मूले खड्गेन निरकृन्तत ॥०३-२५५-२१॥

यमाभ्यां सह राजेन्द्र धौम्येन च महात्मना। प्राप्याश्रमपदं राजन्द्रौपदीं परिसान्त्वय ॥०३-२५५-४१॥

(With the two Yamas, together with Dhaumya, O king, the high-souled, having reached the hermitage, O king, comfort Draupadī.)
O king, accompanied by the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva) and the great-souled Dhaumya, having arrived at the hermitage, comfort Draupadī. (03-255-41)
न हि मे मोक्ष्यते जीवन्मूढः सैन्धवको नृपः। पातालतलसंस्थोऽपि यदि शक्रोऽस्य सारथिः ॥०३-२५५-४२॥
na hi me mokṣyate jīvanmūḍhaḥ saindhavako nṛpaḥ। pātālatalasaṃstho'pi yadi śakro'sya sārathiḥ॥03-255-42॥

(Not indeed by me is released the living deluded Sindhu king; even if dwelling in the depths of Pātāla, if Śakra is his charioteer.)
Indeed, the living deluded Sindhu king will not be released by me, even if he dwells in the depths of Pātāla and if Śakra himself is his charioteer. (03-255-42)

Having heard that, Draupadī, her senses agitated, angry, modest, and wise, spoke to both her husbands, Bhīma and Arjuna. (03-255-44)
कर्तव्यं चेत्प्रियं मह्यं वध्यः स पुरुषाधमः। सैन्धवापसदः पापो दुर्मतिः कुलपांसनः ॥०३-२५५-४५॥
kartavyaṁ cet priyaṁ mahyaṁ vadhyaḥ sa puruṣādhamaḥ। saindhavāpasadaḥ pāpo durmatiḥ kulapāṁsanaḥ॥03-255-45॥
[कर्तव्यं (kartavyam) - that which ought to be done; चेत् (cet) - if; प्रियं (priyam) - dear; loved; मम (mahyaṁ) - to me; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - worthy of being slain; सः (saḥ) - he; पुरुषाधमः (puruṣādhamaḥ) - the lowest of men; सैन्धवापसदः (saindhavāpasadaḥ) - outcast among the inhabitants of Sindhu; पापः (pāpaḥ) - wicked; sinful; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - evil-minded; कुलपांसनः (kulapāṁsanaḥ) - defiler of the family;]
(If that which ought to be done is dear to me, he is worthy of being slain, he, the lowest of men, the outcast among the Sindhus, wicked, evil-minded, defiler of the family.)
If a man considers duty to be something pleasing to me, then he is fit to be killed—he is the lowest of men, an outcast among the Sindhus, wicked, of evil mind, and a disgrace to his family. (03-255-45)
भार्याभिहर्ता निर्वैरो यश्च राज्यहरो रिपुः। याचमानोऽपि सङ्ग्रामे न स जीवितुमर्हति ॥०३-२५५-४६॥
bhāryābhihartā nirvairo yaś ca rājyaharo ripuḥ. yācamāno 'pi saṅgrāme na sa jīvitum arhati ॥03-255-46॥
[भार्या-अभिहर्ता (bhāryā-abhihartā) - wife-violator; (one who violates another's wife); निर्वैरः (nirvairaḥ) - without hostility; यः च (yaḥ ca) - and he who; राज्य-हरः (rājya-haraḥ) - kingdom-thief; (one who steals a kingdom); रिपुः (ripuḥ) - enemy; याचमानः अपि (yācamānaḥ api) - even if requesting; (even if begging for mercy); सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; जीवितुम् अर्हति (jīvitum arhati) - deserves to live;]
(Wife-violator, without hostility, and he who is kingdom-thief enemy—even if requesting in battle—not he deserves to live.)
A man who violates another's wife, or an enemy who seizes the kingdom even with no personal hostility—even if he begs for mercy in battle—he does not deserve to live. (03-255-46)
इत्युक्तौ तौ नरव्याघ्रौ ययतुर्यत्र सैन्धवः। राजा निववृते कृष्णामादाय सपुरोहितः ॥०३-२५५-४७॥
ity-uktau tau naravyāghrau yayatur yatra saindhavaḥ। rājā nivavṛte kṛṣṇām ādāya sa-purohitaḥ॥03-255-47॥
[इति-उक्तौ (iti-uktau) - thus having been spoken; तौ (tau) - those two; नरव्याघ्रौ (naravyāghrau) - tiger among men (two men distinguished as tigers among men); ययतु: (yayatuḥ) - went; यत्र (yatra) - where; सैन्धवः (saindhavaḥ) - Saindhava (the Sindhu prince); राजा (rājā) - the king; निववृते (nivavṛte) - returned; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; स-पुरोहितः (sa-purohitaḥ) - with the priest;]
(Thus having been spoken, those two tigers among men went where the Sindhu prince (was). The king, having taken Kṛṣṇā, returned with the priest.)
After these words, the two heroes went to the place where the Prince of Sindhu was. The king, along with the priest, returned with Kṛṣṇā. (03-255-47)
स प्रविश्याश्रमपदं व्यपविद्धबृसीघटम्। मार्कण्डेयादिभिर्विप्रैरनुकीर्णं ददर्श ह ॥०३-२५५-४८॥
sa praviśyāśramapadaṃ vyapaviddhabṛsīghaṭam। mārkaṇḍeyādibhirviprair anukīrṇaṃ dadarśa ha ॥03-255-48॥

(He, having entered the hermitage ground, where mat and waterpot were thrown away, filled (with) Markandeya and other brahmins, indeed he saw.)
He entered the hermitage, where mats and waterpots were scattered about, and saw it teeming with brahmins such as Markandeya. (03-255-48)
द्रौपदीमनुशोचद्भिर्ब्राह्मणैस्तैः समागतैः। समियाय महाप्राज्ञः सभार्यो भ्रातृमध्यगः ॥०३-२५५-४९॥
draupadīmanuśocadbhir brāhmaṇais taiḥ samāgataiḥ। samiyāya mahāprājñaḥ sabhāryo bhrātṛmadhyagaḥ॥03-255-49॥
[द्रौपदीम् (draupadīm) - Draupadī (accusative singular); अनुशोचद्भिः (anuśocadbhiḥ) - lamenting for; grieving; (instrumental plural); ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by brāhmaṇas; (instrumental plural); तैः (taiḥ) - by those; (instrumental plural); समागतैः (samāgataiḥ) - assembled; gathered; (instrumental plural); समियाय (samiyāya) - approached; came; (perfect 3rd person singular); महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - the great wise one; very wise; (nominative singular); सभार्यः (sabhāryaḥ) - with his wife; (nominative singular); भ्रातृमध्यगः (bhrātṛmadhyagaḥ) - among brothers; situated among brothers; (nominative singular);]
(Draupadī, by those brāhmaṇas who were lamenting and had assembled, was approached by the great wise one, with his wife, situated among (his) brothers.)
The great wise one, along with his wife and surrounded by his brothers, approached Draupadī where the lamenting brāhmaṇas had assembled. (03-255-49)
ते स्म तं मुदिता दृष्ट्वा पुनरभ्यागतं नृपम्। जित्वा तान्सिन्धुसौवीरान्द्रौपदीं चाहृतां पुनः ॥०३-२५५-५०॥
te sma taṃ muditā dṛṣṭvā punar abhyāgataṃ nṛpam। jitvā tān sindhusauvīrān draupadīṃ ca āhṛtāṃ punaḥ ॥03-255-50॥
[ते (te) - they; स्म (sma) - indeed; तं (taṃ) - him; मुदिता (muditā) - gladdened; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पुनर् (punar) - again; अभ्यागतं (abhyāgatam) - arrived; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; तान् (tān) - those; सिन्धुसौवीरान् (sindhusauvīrān) - Sindhu and Sauvīra peoples; द्रौपदीं (draupadīṃ) - Draupadī; च (ca) - and; आहृतां (āhṛtāṃ) - brought back; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(They indeed, having seen him, gladdened, the king again arrived; having conquered those Sindhu and Sauvīra peoples, Draupadī also brought back again.)
They, seeing him—having returned again, gladdened—after conquering the Sindhu and Sauvīra peoples and bringing back Draupadī, rejoiced. (03-255-50)
स तैः परिवृतो राजा तत्रैवोपविवेश ह। प्रविवेशाश्रमं कृष्णा यमाभ्यां सह भामिनी ॥०३-२५५-५१॥
sa taiḥ parivṛto rājā tatraiva upaviveśa ha। praviveśāśramam kṛṣṇā yamābhyāṃ saha bhāminī ॥03-255-51॥

(He, surrounded by them, the king, right there sat down indeed. The radiant lady Kṛṣṇā, together with the two sons of Yama, entered the hermitage.)

भीमार्जुनावपि श्रुत्वा क्रोशमात्रगतं रिपुम्। स्वयमश्वांस्तुदन्तौ तौ जवेनैवाभ्यधावताम् ॥०३-२५५-५२॥
bhīmārjunāv api śrutvā krośamātragataṃ ripum। svayam aśvāṃs tudantau tau javenaivābhyadhāvatām ॥03-255-52॥
[भीमार्जुनौ (bhīmārjunau) - Bhīma and Arjuna; अपि (api) - also; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; क्रोशमात्रगतं (krośamātragatam) - arrived at the distance of a shout; रिपुम् (ripum) - the enemy; स्वयम् (svayam) - themselves; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; स्तुदन्तौ (studantau) - urging; तौ (tau) - those two; जवेन् (javena) - with speed; एव (eva) - indeed; अभ्यधावताम् (abhyadhāvatām) - rushed toward;]
(Bhīma and Arjuna also, having heard the enemy arrived at the distance of a shout, those two, themselves urging (their) horses, indeed with speed, rushed toward (him).)
Bhīma and Arjuna, too, when they heard that the enemy was only a shout's distance away, quickly urged their horses forward themselves and rushed toward him. (03-255-52)
इदमत्यद्भुतं चात्र चकार पुरुषोऽर्जुनः। क्रोशमात्रगतानश्वान्सैन्धवस्य जघान यत् ॥०३-२५५-५३॥
idam aty-adbhutaṃ cātra cakāra puruṣo 'rjunaḥ। krośa-mātra-gatān aśvān saindhavasya jaghāna yat॥03-255-53॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; अत्यद्भुतम् (aty-adbhutam) - very wonderful; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; चकार (cakāra) - he did; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; क्रोशमात्रगतान् (krośa-mātra-gatān) - who had gone a krośa distance; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; सैन्धवस्य (saindhavasya) - of Saindhava; जघान (jaghāna) - killed; यत् (yat) - which;]
(This very wonderful (thing) and here did the man Arjuna: horses of Saindhava who had gone a krośa distance he killed, which.)
Here, Arjuna did this most wonderful thing: he killed Saindhava's horses even though they had gone a krośa away. (03-255-53)
स हि दिव्यास्त्रसम्पन्नः कृच्छ्रकालेऽप्यसम्भ्रमः। अकरोद्दुष्करं कर्म शरैरस्त्रानुमन्त्रितैः ॥०३-२५५-५४॥
sa hi divyāstra-sampannaḥ kṛcchra-kāle'pyasambhramaḥ। akarod duṣkaraṃ karma śaraiḥ astrānumantritaiḥ ॥03-255-54॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; दिव्यास्त्रसम्पन्नः (divyāstra-sampannaḥ) - possessed of divine weapons; कृच्छ्रकाले (kṛcchra-kāle) - in a difficult time; अपि (api) - even; असम्भ्रमः (asambhramaḥ) - unagitated; अकरोत् (akarot) - performed; दुष्करं (duṣkaraṃ) - difficult to accomplish; कर्म (karma) - deed; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; अस्त्रानुमन्त्रितैः (astrānumantritaiḥ) - consacrated by mantras of missiles;]
(He indeed possessed of divine weapons, even in difficult time, being unagitated, performed deed difficult to accomplish with arrows consecrated with weapon-mantras.)
He, truly possessed of divine weapons, remained unagitated even in difficult times and performed the difficult deed with arrows consecrated by weapon-mantras. (03-255-54)
ततोऽभ्यधावतां वीरावुभौ भीमधनञ्जयौ। हताश्वं सैन्धवं भीतमेकं व्याकुलचेतसम् ॥०३-२५५-५५॥
tato'bhyadhāvatāṃ vīrāvubhau bhīma-dhanaṅjayau. hatāśvaṃ sindhavaṃ bhītam ekaṃ vyākulacetasaṃ ॥03-255-55॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभ्यधावताम् (abhyadhāvatām) - rushed towards; वीरौ (vīrau) - the two heroes; उभौ (ubhau) - both; भीमधनञ्जयौ (bhīma-dhanaṅjayau) - Bhīma and Dhanaṅjaya; हताश्वम् (hatāśvam) - whose horses were slain; सैन्धवम् (saindhavam) - the Sindhu prince; भीतम् (bhītam) - afraid; एकम् (ekam) - alone; व्याकुलचेतसम् (vyākulacetasam) - with distressed mind;]
(Then both the heroes, Bhīma and Dhanaṅjaya, rushed towards the Sindhu prince whose horses were slain, who was afraid, alone, and with a distressed mind.)
Then both Bhīma and Dhananjaya, the heroes, rushed toward the Sindhu prince, who was left alone, afraid, distressed in mind, and whose horses had been killed. (03-255-55)
सैन्धवस्तु हतान्दृष्ट्वा तथाश्वान्स्वान्सुदुःखितः। दृष्ट्वा विक्रमकर्माणि कुर्वाणं च धनञ्जयम् ॥ पलायनकृतोत्साहः प्राद्रवद्येन वै वनम् ॥०३-२५५-५६॥
saindhavaḥ tu hatān dṛṣṭvā tathā aśvān svān su-duḥkhitaḥ। dṛṣṭvā vikrama-karmaṇi kurvāṇam ca dhanañjayam॥ palāyana-kṛta-utsāhaḥ prādravat yena vai vanam॥03-255-56॥
[सैन्धवः (saindhavaḥ) - the Sindhu (Jayadratha); तु (tu) - but; हतान् (hatān) - (those who were) slain; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तथा (tathā) - in that way; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; स्वान् (svān) - his own; सुदुःखितः (su-duḥkhitaḥ) - extremely troubled; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; विक्रमकर्माणि (vikrama-karmaṇi) - deeds of valor; कुर्वाणम् (kurvāṇam) - doing; च (ca) - and; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); पलायनकृतोत्साहः (palāyana-kṛta-utsāhaḥ) - incited to flee; प्राद्रवत् (prādravat) - he fled; येन (yena) - by which (path); वै (vai) - indeed; वनम् (vanam) - forest;]
(But the Sindhu, having seen his own slain horses in that way, extremely troubled, and seeing Dhananjaya performing deeds of valor, incited to flee, indeed fled by that (path) to the forest.)
But Jayadratha, on seeing his own slain horses and deeply distressed, observing Arjuna performing acts of valor, was seized by the urge to flee and indeed escaped by that path to the forest. (03-255-56)
सैन्धवं त्वभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य पराक्रान्तं पलायने। अनुयाय महाबाहुः फल्गुनो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२५५-५७॥
saindhavaṁ tv abhisamprekṣya parākrāntaṁ palāyane। anuyāya mahābāhuḥ phalguno vākyam abravīt॥03-255-57॥
[सैन्धवं (saindhavam) - Sindhu prince; (Jayadratha); त्व (tv) - indeed; (emphatic particle); अभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य (abhisamprekṣya) - having noticed; having observed; पराक्रान्तं (parākrāntam) - having advanced; having set forth; पलायने (palāyane) - in fleeing; in flight; अनुयाय (anuyāya) - followed; went after; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; फल्गुनः (phalgunaḥ) - Phalguna; (Arjuna); वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke;]
(Indeed, having noticed the Sindhu prince advanced in flight, the mighty-armed Phalguna followed (him) and spoke words.)
Phalguna (Arjuna), the mighty-armed, noticing that the Sindhu prince had advanced in flight, followed him and spoke.
अनेन वीर्येण कथं स्त्रियं प्रार्थयसे बलात्। राजपुत्र निवर्तस्व न ते युक्तं पलायनम् ॥ कथं चानुचरान्हित्वा शत्रुमध्ये पलायसे ॥०३-२५५-५८॥
anena vīryeṇa kathaṁ striyaṁ prārthayase balāt। rājaputra nivartasva na te yuktaṁ palāyanam॥ kathaṁ cānucarān hitvā śatrumadhye palāyase॥03-255-58॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - strength; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; स्त्रियं (striyam) - woman; प्रार्थयसे (prārthayase) - do you request; बलात् (balāt) - by force; राजपुत्र (rājaputra) - O prince; निवर्तस्व (nivartasva) - turn back; न (na) - not; ते (te) - for you; युक्तं (yuktaṁ) - proper; पलायनम् (palāyanam) - flight; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; च (ca) - and; अनुचरान् (anucarān) - companions; हित्वा (hitvā) - abandoning; शत्रुमध्ये (śatrumadhye) - in midst of enemies; पलायसे (palāyase) - do you flee;]
(By this strength, how do you request a woman by force? O prince, turn back; not for you proper is flight. How and abandoning your companions, in midst of enemies, do you flee? (03-255-58))
With such strength, how can you seek a woman by force? O prince, turn back; flight is not proper for you. And how do you flee in the midst of enemies, abandoning your companions? (03-255-58)
इत्युच्यमानः पार्थेन सैन्धवो न न्यवर्तत। तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति तं भीमः सहसाभ्यद्रवद्बली ॥ मा वधीरिति पार्थस्तं दयावानभ्यभाषत ॥०३-२५५-५९॥
ity ucyamānaḥ pārthena saindhavo na nyavartata। tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti taṃ bhīmaḥ sahasābhyadravad balī॥ mā vadhīr iti pārthas taṃ dayāvān abhyabhāṣata॥03-255-59॥

(Thus being spoken to by Pārtha, Saindhava did not turn back. "Stop, stop!"—to him Bhīma, the strong, suddenly ran towards. "Do not kill (him)," thus Pārtha, compassionate, addressed him.)
Thus, even as Pārtha called to him, Saindhava did not turn back. Bhīma, the strong, suddenly rushed at him, crying, "Stop! Stop!" But Pārtha, moved by compassion, said to him, "Do not kill (him)." (03-255-59)
