jayadrathas tu samprekṣya bhrātarāv udyatāyudhau। prādravat tūrṇam avyagraḥ jīvitepsuḥ suduḥkhitaḥ॥03-256-1॥

(But Jayadratha, having seen (his) brothers with weapons raised, swiftly fled, not confused, desiring life, greatly distressed.)
But Jayadratha, upon seeing his brothers with their weapons raised, fled swiftly, calm but greatly distressed and desiring to save his life. (03-256-1)
तं भीमसेनो धावन्तमवतीर्य रथाद्बली। अभिद्रुत्य निजग्राह केशपक्षेऽत्यमर्षणः ॥०३-२५६-२॥
taṁ bhīmaseno dhāvantam avatīrya rathād balī। abhidrutya nijagrāha keśapakṣe’tyamarṣaṇaḥ ॥03-256-2॥

(Him Bhīmasena running, having descended from the chariot, the strong one, having rushed forward, seized by the tuft of hair, extremely enraged.)
Bhīmasena, the strong one, extremely enraged, descended from his chariot, rushed forward at the running foe, and seized him by the hair. (03-256-2)
समुद्यम्य च तं रोषान्निष्पिपेष महीतले। गले गृहीत्वा राजानं ताडयामास चैव ह ॥०३-२५६-३॥
samudyamya ca taṃ roṣān niṣpipeṣa mahītale| gale gṛhītvā rājānaṃ tāḍayām āsa caiva ha ॥03-256-3॥

(Having raised him in anger, (he) crushed (him) on the earth; having seized the king by the neck, (he) indeed began to strike (him) also certainly.)
And having seized him in anger, he crushed him on the ground; grabbing the king by the neck, he indeed began to beat him as well. (03-256-3)
पुनः सञ्जीवमानस्य तस्योत्पतितुमिच्छतः। पदा मूर्ध्नि महाबाहुः प्राहरद्विलपिष्यतः ॥०३-२५६-४॥
punaḥ sañjīvamānasya tasyotpatitumicchataḥ। padā mūrdhni mahābāhuḥ prāharad vilapiṣyataḥ॥03-256-4॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सञ्जीवमानस्य (sañjīvamānasya) - reviving; becoming alive again; तस्य (tasya) - of him; उत्पतितुम् (utpatitum) - to arise; to get up; इच्छतः (icchataḥ) - desiring; पदा (padā) - with (his) foot; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on (his) head; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the strong-armed (person); प्राहरत् (prāharat) - struck; विलपिष्यतः (vilapiṣyataḥ) - while lamenting;]
(Again, of the reviving one, as he desired to arise, with (his) foot on (his) head, the strong-armed (man) struck (him) while (he was) lamenting.)
As the one being revived again, desiring to rise, was lamenting, the strong-armed man struck him on the head with his foot. (03-256-4)
तस्य जानुं ददौ भीमो जघ्ने चैनमरत्निना। स मोहमगमद्राजा प्रहारवरपीडितः ॥०३-२५६-५॥
tasya jānuṃ dadau bhīmo jaghne ca enam aratninā। sa moham agamat rājā prahāra-vara-pīḍitaḥ॥03-256-5॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; जानुं (jānuṃ) - knee; ददौ (dadau) - gave; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; जघ्ने (jaghne) - struck; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; अरत्निना (aratninā) - with the mace; सः (saḥ) - he; मोहम् (moham) - unconsciousness; अगमत् (agamat) - reached; राजा (rājā) - the king; प्रहारवरपीडितः (prahāra-vara-pīḍitaḥ) - afflicted by a great blow;]
(Of him knee gave Bhima struck and him with the mace. He unconsciousness reached king afflicted by a great blow (03-256-5))
Bhima struck his knee with the mace; the king, afflicted by the mighty blow, fell unconscious. (03-256-5)
विरोषं भीमसेनं तु वारयामास फल्गुनः। दुःशलायाः कृते राजा यत्तदाहेति कौरव ॥०३-२५६-६॥
viroṣaṁ bhīmasenaṁ tu vārayāmāsa phalgunaḥ। duḥśalāyāḥ kṛte rājā yaccadāha iti kaurava ॥03-256-6॥

नायं पापसमाचारो मत्तो जीवितुमर्हति। द्रौपद्यास्तदनर्हायाः परिक्लेष्टा नराधमः ॥०३-२५६-७॥
nāyaṃ pāpasamācāro matto jīvitumarhati। draupadyāstadanarhāyāḥ parikleṣṭā narādhamaḥ ॥03-256-7॥
[न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; पापसमाचारः (pāpa-samācāraḥ) - wicked-doer; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; द्रौपद्याः (draupadyāḥ) - of Draupadī; तत् (tat) - that; अनर्हायाः (anarhāyāḥ) - of the unworthy; परिक्लेष्टा (parikleṣṭā) - tormentor; नराधमः (narādhamaḥ) - vilest among men;]
(Not this wicked-doer from me to live deserves. Of Draupadī that unworthy's tormentor vilest among men.)
This wicked-doer, who is the tormentor of Draupadī and the vilest among men, does not deserve to live because of me. (03-256-7)
किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यद्राजा सततं घृणी। त्वं च बालिशया बुद्ध्या सदैवास्मान्प्रबाधसे ॥०३-२५६-८॥
kiṁ nu śakyaṁ mayā kartuṁ yadrājā satataṁ ghṛṇī। tvaṁ ca bāliśayā buddhyā sadaivāsmānpra bādha se ॥03-256-8॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - possible; मया (mayā) - by me; कर्तुं (kartuṁ) - to do; यत् (yat) - which; राजा (rājā) - king; सततं (satataṁ) - always; घृणी (ghṛṇī) - compassionate; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; च (ca) - and; बालिशया (bāliśayā) - with childish; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - intellect; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; प्रबाधसे (prabādhase) - you trouble;]
(What indeed possible by me to do, which king always compassionate? You and with childish intellect always us you trouble.)
What could I possibly do, since the king is always compassionate? Yet you, with your childish mind, are always troubling us. (03-256-8)
एवमुक्त्वा सटास्तस्य पञ्च चक्रे वृकोदरः। अर्धचन्द्रेण बाणेन किञ्चिदब्रुवतस्तदा ॥०३-२५६-९॥
evam uktvā saṭāḥ tasya pañca cakre vṛkodaraḥ। ardha-candreṇa bāṇena kiñcid abruvataḥ tadā ॥03-256-9॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सटाः (saṭāḥ) - the maned one; तस्य (tasya) - his; पञ्च (pañca) - five; चक्रे (cakre) - made; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara; अर्धचन्द्रेण (ardha-candreṇa) - with the crescent-shaped (arrow); बाणेन (bāṇena) - with an arrow; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; अब्रुवत् (abruvat) - (he) did not speak; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus having spoken, the maned one of him five made Vṛkodara, with a crescent-shaped arrow a little did not speak then.)
Thus, having spoken thus, Vṛkodara made five (wounds) on his maned foe with a crescent-shaped arrow; for a moment, he did not speak then. (03-256-9)
विकल्पयित्वा राजानं ततः प्राह वृकोदरः। जीवितुं चेच्छसे मूढ हेतुं मे गदतः शृणु ॥०३-२५६-१०॥
vikalpayitvā rājānaṁ tataḥ prāha vṛkodaraḥ। jīvitum cecchase mūḍha hetuṁ me gadataḥ śṛṇu॥03-256-10॥
[विकल्पयित्वा (vikalpayitvā) - having considered; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्राह (prāha) - said; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; चेत् (cet) - if; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; मूढ (mūḍha) - deluded one; हेतुम् (hetum) - the reason; मे (me) - from me; गदतः (gadataḥ) - speaking; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear;]
(Having considered the king, then Vṛkodara said: "If you wish to live, O deluded one, hear from me the reason as I speak." (03-256-10))
After reflecting on the king, Vṛkodara (Bhīma) spoke: "If you desire to live, fool, listen to the reason as I declare it to you." (03-256-10)
दासोऽस्मीति त्वया वाच्यं संसत्सु च सभासु च। एवं ते जीवितं दद्यामेष युद्धजितो विधिः ॥०३-२५६-११॥
dāso'smīti tvayā vācyaṁ saṁsatsu ca sabhāsu ca। evaṁ te jīvitaṁ dadyāmeṣa yuddhajito vidhiḥ ॥03-256-11॥
[दासः (dāsaḥ) - servant; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वाच्यम् (vācyam) - should be spoken; संसत्सु (saṁsatsu) - in assemblies; च (ca) - and; सभासु (sabhāsu) - in councils; च (ca) - and; एवम् (evam) - thus; ते (te) - to you; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; दद्याम् (dadyām) - I would give; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; युद्धजितः (yuddhajitaḥ) - conquered in battle; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - rule;]
("I am a servant"—thus by you it should be spoken in assemblies and in councils; thus, to you life I would give—this is the rule for one conquered in battle.)
You must say, "I am a servant," in both assemblies and councils; only thus would I spare your life—this is the rule for one defeated in battle. (03-256-11)
एवमस्त्विति तं राजा कृच्छ्रप्राणो जयद्रथः। प्रोवाच पुरुषव्याघ्रं भीममाहवशोभिनम् ॥०३-२५६-१२॥
evam-astv-iti taṁ rājā kṛcchra-prāṇo jayadrathaḥ। provāca puruṣa-vyāghram bhīmam āhava-śobhinam॥03-256-12॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - so; तं (taṁ) - him; राजा (rājā) - the king; कृच्छ्रप्राणः (kṛcchra-prāṇaḥ) - life in difficulty; जयद्रथः (jayadrathaḥ) - Jayadratha; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; पुरुषव्याघ्रं (puruṣa-vyāghram) - tiger among men; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhīma; आहवशोभिनम् (āhava-śobhinam) - shining in battle;]
(Thus, let it be—so to him, the king whose life was in difficulty, Jayadratha, said to the tiger among men, Bhīma, shining in battle.)
“So be it,” said King Jayadratha, whose life was in great danger, to Bhīma, the tiger among men, who shone in battle. (03-256-12)
तत एनं विचेष्टन्तं बद्ध्वा पार्थो वृकोदरः। रथमारोपयामास विसञ्ज्ञं पांसुगुण्ठितम् ॥०३-२५६-१३॥
tat enaṃ viceṣṭantaṃ baddhvā pārtho vṛkodaraḥ। ratham āropyamāsa visañjñaṃ pāṃsuguṇṭhitam ॥03-256-13॥
[तत् (tat) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; विचेष्टन्तम् (viceṣṭantam) - moving/restless; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having bound; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आरोपयामास (āropyamāsa) - caused to place; विसञ्ज्ञम् (visañjñam) - unconscious; पांसुगुण्ठितम् (pāṃsuguṇṭhitam) - covered with dust;]
(Then Pārtha and Vṛkodara, having bound him moving, caused to place (him) unconscious, covered with dust, on the chariot.)
Then Pārtha and Vṛkodara, after binding him who was still moving, placed the unconscious and dust-covered man on the chariot. (03-256-13)
ततस्तं रथमास्थाय भीमः पार्थानुगस्तदा। अभ्येत्याश्रममध्यस्थमभ्यगच्छद्युधिष्ठिरम् ॥०३-२५६-१४॥
tatas taṃ ratham āsthāya bhīmaḥ pārthānug as tadā। abhyetya āśrama-madhyastham abhyagacchat yudhiṣṭhiram ॥03-256-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तं (taṃ) - him; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having mounted; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; पार्थानुगः (pārthānugaḥ) - the follower of Partha; तदा (tadā) - at that time; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; आश्रममध्यस्थम् (āśrama-madhyastham) - situated in the midst of the hermitage; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - went toward; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira;]
(Then, having mounted that chariot, Bhima, the follower of Partha, at that time, having approached, went toward Yudhishthira who was situated in the midst of the hermitage.)

दर्शयामास भीमस्तु तदवस्थं जयद्रथम्। तं राजा प्राहसद्दृष्ट्वा मुच्यतामिति चाब्रवीत् ॥०३-२५६-१५॥
darśayāmāsa bhīmas tu tadavasthaṃ jayadratham. taṃ rājā prāhasad dṛṣṭvā mucyatām iti cābravīt ॥03-256-15॥
[दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - caused to be shown; revealed; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; तु (tu) - but; तदवस्थं (tadavastham) - in that condition; that state; जयद्रथम् (jayadratham) - Jayadratha; तं (taṃ) - him; राजा (rājā) - the king; प्राहसत् (prāhasat) - smiled; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मुच्यताम् (mucyatām) - let him be released; इति (iti) - so; thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Bhima but caused to be shown Jayadratha in that condition. The king, having seen him, smiled, and said, "Let him be released.")

राजानं चाब्रवीद्भीमो द्रौपद्यै कथयेति वै। दासभावं गतो ह्येष पाण्डूनां पापचेतनः ॥०३-२५६-१६॥
rājānaṃ cābravīdbhīmo draupadyai kathayeti vai। dāsabhāvaṃ gato hyeṣa pāṇḍūnāṃ pāpacetanaḥ॥03-256-16॥

(To the king, and said Bhīma: "to Draupadī, tell thus indeed. The state of servitude has entered indeed, this wicked-minded one of the Pāṇḍavas." (03-256-16))
Bhīma said to the king: "Tell Draupadī this: this wicked-minded one among the Pāṇḍavas has indeed entered the state of servitude." (03-256-16)
तमुवाच ततो ज्येष्ठो भ्राता सप्रणयं वचः। मुञ्चैनमधमाचारं प्रमाणं यदि ते वयम् ॥०३-२५६-१७॥
tam uvāca tato jyeṣṭhaḥ bhrātā sapraṇayaṃ vacaḥ। muñca enam adhama-ācāram pramāṇam yadi te vayam॥03-256-17॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - the eldest; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; सप्रणयम् (sapraṇayam) - with affection; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; मुञ्च (muñca) - release; एनम् (enam) - him; अधमाचारम् (adhama-ācāram) - of base conduct; प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - the authority; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - to you; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(To him, then, the eldest brother spoke affectionate words: "Release this one of base conduct; if we are the authority to you.")
Then the eldest brother affectionately spoke these words to him: "Release this person of wicked conduct, if we are your authority." (03-256-17)
द्रौपदी चाब्रवीद्भीममभिप्रेक्ष्य युधिष्ठिरम्। दासोऽयं मुच्यतां राज्ञस्त्वया पञ्चसटः कृतः ॥०३-२५६-१८॥
draupadī cābravīdbhīmamabhiprekṣya yudhiṣṭhiram। dāso'yaṃ mucyatāṃ rājñastvayā pañcasaṭaḥ kṛtaḥ ॥03-256-18॥
[द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; भीमम् (bhīmam) - to Bhīma; अभिप्रेक्ष्य (abhiprekṣya) - having looked at; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - to Yudhiṣṭhira; दासः (dāsaḥ) - slave; अयम् (ayam) - this; मुच्यताम् (mucyatām) - let him be released; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पञ्चसटः (pañcasaṭaḥ) - having (his) hair in five locks; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made;]
(Draupadī and said to Bhīma, having looked at Yudhiṣṭhira: This slave, made with five locks of hair by you, of the king, let him be released.)
Draupadī, after looking at Yudhiṣṭhira, said to Bhīma: "Let this slave, whom you have made to wear five locks of hair, be released by the king." (03-256-18)
स मुक्तोऽभ्येत्य राजानमभिवाद्य युधिष्ठिरम्। ववन्दे विह्वलो राजा तांश्च सर्वान्मुनींस्तदा ॥०३-२५६-१९॥
sa mukto'bhyetya rājānam abhivādya yudhiṣṭhiram। vavande vihvalo rājā tāṁś ca sarvān munīṁs tadā ॥03-256-19॥

(He freed, having approached the king, having saluted Yudhishthira, the king, overcome, bowed to them and all the sages at that time.)

The compassionate king Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, said to him, upon seeing Jayadratha thus seized by Savyasācin (Arjuna). (03-256-20)
अदासो गच्छ मुक्तोऽसि मैवं कार्षीः पुनः क्वचित्। स्त्रीकामुक धिगस्तु त्वां क्षुद्रः क्षुद्रसहायवान् ॥ एवंविधं हि कः कुर्यात्त्वदन्यः पुरुषाधमः ॥०३-२५६-२१॥
adāso gaccha mukto'si maivaṃ kārṣīḥ punaḥ kvacit। strīkāmuka dhigastu tvāṃ kṣudraḥ kṣudrasahāyavān॥ evaṃ-vidhaṃ hi kaḥ kuryāt tvadanyaḥ puruṣādhamah॥03-256-21॥
[अदासः (adāsaḥ) - unbound; without chains; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - freed; असि (asi) - you are; मा (mā) - do not; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कार्षीः (kārṣīḥ) - act; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; स्त्रीकामुक (strīkāmuka) - lustful for women; धिक् (dhik) - shame; अस्तु (astu) - let be; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; क्षुद्रः (kṣudraḥ) - mean; क्षुद्रसहायवान् (kṣudrasahāyavān) - having mean helpers; एवंविधम् (evaṃvidham) - such as this; हि (hi) - indeed; कः (kaḥ) - who; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - could do; त्वदन्यः (tvadanyaḥ) - other than you; पुरुषाधमः (puruṣādhamah) - basest of men;]
(Unbound, go, you are freed; do not thus act again anywhere. Lustful for women, shame let be you, mean, having mean helpers. Such as this indeed, who could do, other than you, basest of men? (03-256-21))
Go unbound, you are freed; do not act like this again anywhere. Shame upon you, lustful for women, mean one with mean accomplices! Indeed, who else but you, base among men, could act in such a way? (03-256-21)
गतसत्त्वमिव ज्ञात्वा कर्तारमशुभस्य तम्। सम्प्रेक्ष्य भरतश्रेष्ठः कृपां चक्रे नराधिपः ॥०३-२५६-२२॥
gatasattvam iva jñātvā kartāram aśubhasya tam। samprekṣya bharataśreṣṭhaḥ kṛpāṃ cakre narādhipaḥ॥03-256-22॥
[गतसत्त्वम् (gatasattvam) - life-gone; इव (iva) - as if; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; कर्तारम् (kartāram) - the doer; अशुभस्य (aśubhasya) - of the evil; तम् (tam) - him; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; भरतश्रेष्ठः (bharataśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best among the Bharatas; कृपां (kṛpāṃ) - compassion; चक्रे (cakre) - performed; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the king;]
(Having known him, the doer of evil, to be as if life-gone, having seen (that), the best among the Bharatas, the king, performed compassion.)
Seeing him—the doer of evil—as if his life had departed, the best of the Bharatas, the king, felt compassion. (03-256-22)
धर्मे ते वर्धतां बुद्धिर्मा चाधर्मे मनः कृथाः। साश्वः सरथपादातः स्वस्ति गच्छ जयद्रथ ॥०३-२५६-२३॥
dharme te vardhatāṃ buddhir mā cādharmē manaḥ kṛthāḥ. sāśvaḥ sarathapādātaḥ svasti gaccha jayadratha ॥03-256-23॥
[धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; ते (te) - your; वर्धतां (vardhatāṃ) - may increase; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; मा (mā) - do not; च (ca) - and; अधर्मे (adharme) - in unrighteousness; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - make; साश्वः (sāśvaḥ) - with horses; सरथपादातः (sarathapādātaḥ) - with chariots and infantry; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; जयद्रथ (jayadratha) - Jayadratha;]
(In righteousness your intellect may increase, do not and in unrighteousness your mind make. With horses, with chariots and infantry, well-being go, Jayadratha.)
May your intellect increase in righteousness; do not let your mind engage in unrighteousness. Go with horses, chariots, and infantry in well-being, Jayadratha. (03-256-23)
एवमुक्तस्तु सव्रीडं तूष्णीं किञ्चिदवाङ्मुखः। जगाम राजा दुःखार्तो गङ्गाद्वाराय भारत ॥०३-२५६-२४॥
evam-uktas tu savrīḍaṃ tūṣṇīṃ kiñcid avāṅmukhaḥ। jagāma rājā duḥkhārto gaṅgādvārāya bhārata ॥03-256-24॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; तु (tu) - but; सव्रीडम् (savrīḍam) - with shame; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - silent; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; अवाङ्मुखः (avāṅmukhaḥ) - with face downcast; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; राजा (rājā) - king; दुःखार्तः (duḥkhārtaḥ) - distressed by sorrow; गङ्गाद्वाराय (gaṅgādvārāya) - to Gaṅgādvāra; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Thus having been addressed but, with shame, silent, a little with face downcast, went the king, distressed by sorrow, to Gaṅgādvāra, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, thus addressed, the king—somewhat ashamed, silent, and his face downcast, troubled by sorrow—went to Gaṅgādvāra. (03-256-24)
स देवं शरणं गत्वा विरूपाक्षमुमापतिम्। तपश्चचार विपुलं तस्य प्रीतो वृषध्वजः ॥०३-२५६-२५॥
sa devaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatvā virūpākṣam umāpatim। tapaś cacāra vipulaṃ tasya prīto vṛṣadhvajaḥ॥03-256-25॥
[स (sa) - he; देवं (devaṃ) - the god; शरणं (śaraṇam) - refuge; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; विरूपाक्षम् (virūpākṣam) - Virūpākṣa (the one with diverse eyes); उमापतिम् (umāpatiṃ) - the husband of Umā; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; च (ca) - and; अचार (acāra) - he performed; विपुलं (vipulaṃ) - great; तस्य (tasya) - of him; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; वृषध्वजः (vṛṣadhvajaḥ) - Vṛṣadhvaja (the bull-bannered one, Śiva);]
(He, having gone to the god as refuge, Virūpākṣa, the husband of Umā, performed great austerity; of him, pleased was Vṛṣadhvaja.)
He went for refuge to the god Virūpākṣa, the husband of Umā, and performed great austerity; Vṛṣadhvaja (Śiva) was pleased with him. (03-256-25)
बलिं स्वयं प्रत्यगृह्णात्प्रीयमाणस्त्रिलोचनः। वरं चास्मै ददौ देवः स च जग्राह तच्छृणु ॥०३-२५६-२६॥
baliṁ svayaṁ pratyagṛhṇāt prīyamāṇas trilocanaḥ। varaṁ cāsmai dadau devaḥ sa ca jagrāha tac chṛṇu॥03-256-26॥
[बलिं (baliṁ) - offering; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; प्रत्यगृह्णात् (pratyagṛhṇāt) - accepted; प्रीयमाणः (prīyamāṇaḥ) - being pleased; त्रिलोचनः (trilocanaḥ) - the three-eyed one; वरं (varaṁ) - boon; च (ca) - and; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; ददौ (dadau) - gave; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; जग्राह (jagrāha) - accepted; तत् (tat) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen;]
(Offering himself accepted being pleased the three-eyed one; boon and to him gave the god; he and accepted that; listen.)
The three-eyed one, being pleased, himself accepted the offering; and the god gave a boon to him, and he accepted that. Listen. (03-256-26)
समस्तान्सरथान्पञ्च जयेयं युधि पाण्डवान्। इति राजाब्रवीद्देवं नेति देवस्तमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२५६-२७॥
samastānsarathānpañca jayeyaṁ yudhi pāṇḍavān। iti rājābravīddevaṃ neti devastamabravīt ॥03-256-27॥
[समस्तान् (samastān) - all; सरथान् (sarathān) - with chariots; पञ्च (pañca) - five; जयेयम् (jayeyam) - I may conquer; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; इति (iti) - thus; राजा (rājā) - king; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; देवम् (devam) - to the god; नेति (neti) - not so; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; तम् (tam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(All with chariots five I may conquer in battle the Pāṇḍavas, thus the king said to the god. "Not so," the god said to him.)
I could defeat all five of the Pāṇḍavas with their chariots in battle, said the king to the god. But the god replied to him, "Not so." (03-256-27)
अजय्यांश्चाप्यवध्यांश्च वारयिष्यसि तान्युधि। ऋतेऽर्जुनं महाबाहुं देवैरपि दुरासदम् ॥०३-२५६-२८॥
ajayyāṁś cāpy avadhyāṁś ca vārayiṣyasi tān yudhi। ṛte 'arjunaṁ mahābāhuṁ devair api durāsadam ॥03-256-28॥
[अजय्याञ् (ajayyān) - unconquerable ones; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अवध्याञ् (avadhyān) - invulnerable ones; च (ca) - and; वारयिष्यसि (vārayiṣyasi) - you will restrain; तान् (tān) - them; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; ऋते (ṛte) - except; अर्जुनं (arjunam) - Arjuna; महाबाहुं (mahābāhum) - mighty-armed; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; दुरासदम् (durāsadam) - difficult to assail;]
(Unconquerable ones and also invulnerable ones you will restrain them in battle, except Arjuna, the mighty-armed, even by the gods difficult to assail.)
You will restrain in battle those who are unconquerable and invulnerable, except for Arjuna, the mighty-armed, who is difficult to assail even for the gods. (03-256-28)
यमाहुरजितं देवं शङ्खचक्रगदाधरम्। प्रधानः सोऽस्त्रविदुषां तेन कृष्णेन रक्ष्यते ॥०३-२५६-२९॥
yam āhur ajitaṃ devaṃ śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-dharam। pradhānaḥ so'stra-viduṣāṃ tena kṛṣṇena rakṣyate ॥03-256-29॥
[यम् (yam) - whom; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; अजितम् (ajitam) - unconquered; देवम् (devam) - god; शङ्खचक्रगदाधरम् (śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-dharam) - the holder of conch, discus, and mace; प्रधानः (pradhānaḥ) - the chief; सः (saḥ) - he; अस्त्रविदुषाम् (astra-viduṣām) - of those skilled in weapons; तेन (tena) - by him; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; रक्ष्यते (rakṣyate) - is protected;]
(Whom they say unconquered god, the holder of conch, discus, and mace, the chief—he of those skilled in weapons, by that Kṛṣṇa is protected.)
He whom they call the unconquered god, holder of the conch, discus, and mace—that chief of those skilled in weapons, is protected by that Kṛṣṇa. (03-256-29)
एवमुक्तस्तु नृपतिः स्वमेव भवनं ययौ। पाण्डवाश्च वने तस्मिन्न्यवसन्काम्यके तदा ॥०३-२५६-३०॥

(Thus addressed, but the king indeed went to his own palace. The Pāṇḍavas also in that forest Kāmyaka then remained.)
