Janamejaya said.
एवं हृतायां कृष्णायां प्राप्य क्लेशमनुत्तमम्। अत ऊर्ध्वं नरव्याघ्राः किमकुर्वत पाण्डवाः ॥०३-२५७-१॥
evaṃ hṛtāyāṃ kṛṣṇāyāṃ prāpya kleśam anuttamam। ata ūrdhvaṃ naravyāghrāḥ kim akurvata pāṇḍavāḥ ॥03-257-1॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; हृतायाम् (hṛtāyām) - having been abducted; कृष्णायाम् (kṛṣṇāyām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; क्लेशम् (kleśam) - distress; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; अतः (ataḥ) - thereafter; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - afterward; नरव्याघ्राः (naravyāghrāḥ) - tiger-like men (heroes); किम् (kim) - what; अकुर्वत (akurvata) - did [they] do; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Thus, with Kṛṣṇā having been abducted, having obtained unsurpassed distress, thereafter, afterward, tiger-like men, what did the Pāṇḍavas do?)
Thus, when Kṛṣṇā had been abducted and had undergone unsurpassed distress, what did the tiger-like Pāṇḍavas do afterward? (03-257-1)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवं कृष्णां मोक्षयित्वा विनिर्जित्य जयद्रथम्। आसां चक्रे मुनिगणैर्धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-२५७-२॥
evaṃ kṛṣṇāṃ mokṣayitvā vinirjitya jayadratham। āsāṃ cakre munigaṇair dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥03-257-2॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कृष्णां (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī, the dark-complexioned one); मोक्षयित्वा (mokṣayitvā) - having liberated; विनिर्जित्य (vinirjitya) - having thoroughly conquered; जयद्रथम् (jayadratham) - Jayadratha; आसां (āsām) - of these (women); चक्रे (cakre) - he made; मुनिगणैः (munigaṇaiḥ) - by groups of sages; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Thus, having liberated Kṛṣṇā and having thoroughly conquered Jayadratha, for these (women) Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira made (an arrangement) by groups of sages.)
Thus, after freeing Kṛṣṇā and defeating Jayadratha, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira, with the help of groups of sages, made arrangements for these women. (03-257-2)
तेषां मध्ये महर्षीणां शृण्वतामनुशोचताम्। मार्कण्डेयमिदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्पाण्डुनन्दनः ॥०३-२५७-३॥
teṣāṃ madhye maharṣīṇāṃ śṛṇvatām anuśocatām। mārkaṇḍeyam idaṃ vākyam abravīt pāṇḍunandanaḥ॥ 03-257-3॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; मध्ये (madhye) - among; महर्षीणां (maharṣīṇām) - of the great sages; शृण्वताम् (śṛṇvatām) - (while) listening; अनुशोचताम् (anuśocatām) - (while) lamenting; मार्कण्डेयम् (mārkaṇḍeyam) - to Markandeya; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पाण्डुनन्दनः (pāṇḍunandanaḥ) - the son of Pandu;]
(Of them, among the great sages, while listening and lamenting, to Markandeya, this speech the son of Pandu said.)
Among those great sages, while they were listening and lamenting, the son of Pandu spoke this speech to Markandeya. (03-257-3)
मन्ये कालश्च बलवान्दैवं च विधिनिर्मितम्। भवितव्यं च भूतानां यस्य नास्ति व्यतिक्रमः ॥०३-२५७-४॥
manye kālaś ca balavān daivaṃ ca vidhinirmitam। bhavitavyaṃ ca bhūtānāṃ yasya nāsti vyatikramaḥ॥03-257-4॥
[मन्ये (manye) - I think; कालः (kālaḥ) - Time; च (ca) - and; बलवान् (balavān) - powerful; दैवम् (daivam) - destiny; च (ca) - and; विधि-निर्मितम् (vidhi-nirmitam) - created by fate; भवितव्यम् (bhavitavyam) - what is destined to happen; च (ca) - and; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; यस्य (yasya) - whose; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; व्यतिक्रमः (vyatikramaḥ) - transgression;]
(I think Time and destiny, powerful and created by fate, and what is destined to happen for beings, whose transgression does not exist.)
I believe that Time and destiny are powerful, being creations of fate, and whatever is destined for living beings cannot be transgressed. (03-257-4)
कथं हि पत्नीमस्माकं धर्मज्ञां धर्मचारिणीम्। संस्पृशेदीदृशो भावः शुचिं स्तैन्यमिवानृतम् ॥०३-२५७-५॥
kathaṁ hi patnīmasmākaṁ dharmajñāṁ dharmacāriṇīm। saṁspṛśed īdṛśo bhāvaḥ śuciṁ stainyam ivānṛtam ॥03-257-5॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; पत्नीम् (patnīm) - wife (accusative singular); अस्माकं (asmākam) - our; धर्मज्ञां (dharmajñām) - knowing righteousness; धर्मचारिणीम् (dharmacāriṇīm) - practicing righteousness; संस्पृशेत् (saṁspṛśet) - could touch (or befall); ईदृशः (īdṛśaḥ) - such; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - feeling; शुचिम् (śucim) - pure; स्तैन्यम् (stainyam) - theft; इव (iva) - like; अनृतम् (anṛtam) - falsehood;]
(How indeed could such a feeling touch our wife, who knows righteousness, who practices righteousness, who is pure, like theft touches falsehood?)
How could such a feeling possibly touch our wife, who is pure, who knows and practices righteousness—just as theft cannot touch falsehood? (03-257-5)
न हि पापं कृतं किञ्चित्कर्म वा निन्दितं क्वचित्। द्रौपद्या ब्राह्मणेष्वेव धर्मः सुचरितो महान् ॥०३-२५७-६॥
na hi pāpaṃ kṛtaṃ kiñcit karma vā ninditaṃ kvacit। draupadyā brāhmaṇeṣv eva dharmaḥ sucarito mahān॥03-257-6॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; पापं (pāpaṃ) - sin; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; कर्म (karma) - action; वा (vā) - or; निन्दितं (ninditaṃ) - blamable; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - by Draupadī; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - towards Brāhmaṇas; एव (eva) - only; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; righteousness; सुचरितः (sucaritaḥ) - well-practiced; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(Not indeed sin done, anything, or action blamable anywhere. By Draupadī towards Brāhmaṇas only, dharma well-practiced great.)
Indeed, there was no sin committed, nor any blameworthy act anywhere. The great dharma was well-practiced by Draupadī only towards the Brāhmaṇas. (03-257-6)
तां जहार बलाद्राजा मूढबुद्धिर्जयद्रथः। तस्याः संहरणात्प्राप्तः शिरसः केशवापनम् ॥ पराजयं च सङ्ग्रामे ससहायः समाप्तवान् ॥०३-२५७-७॥
tāṁ jahāra balādrājā mūḍhabuddhirjayadrathaḥ। tasyāḥ saṁharaṇātprāptaḥ śirasaḥ keśavāpanam ॥ parājayaṁ ca saṅgrāme sasahāyaḥ samāptavān ॥03-257-7॥
[तां (ताम्) (tām) - her; जहार (jahāra) - seized; बलात् (balāt) - by force; राजा (rājā) - king; मूढबुद्धिः (mūḍhabuddhiḥ) - of deluded intellect; जयद्रथः (jayadrathaḥ) - Jayadratha; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; संहरणात् (saṁharaṇāt) - on account of the abduction; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - obtained; शिरसः (śirasaḥ) - of the head; केशवापनम् (keśavāpanam) - shaving of hair; पराजयं (parājayam) - defeat; च (ca) - and; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; ससहायः (sasahāyaḥ) - with his allies; समाप्तवान् (samāptavān) - met with;]
(Her seized by force king of deluded intellect Jayadratha. On account of her abduction obtained of the head shaving of hair. Defeat and in battle with his allies met with.)
Jayadratha, the king of deluded mind, seized her by force. Because of her abduction, he received the shaving of his head. He, along with his allies, met defeat in battle. (03-257-7)
प्रत्याहृता तथास्माभिर्हत्वा तत्सैन्धवं बलम्। तद्दारहरणं प्राप्तमस्माभिरवितर्कितम् ॥०३-२५७-८॥
pratyāhṛtā tathāsmābhirhatvā tatsaindhavaṁ balam। taddāraharaṇaṁ prāptamasmābhiravitarkitam ॥03-257-8॥
[प्रत्याहृता (pratyāhṛtā) - brought back; sustained; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that manner; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; तत् (tat) - that; सैन्धवम् (saindhavam) - pertaining to Sindhu; of the Sindhu people; बलम् (balam) - army; force; तत् (tat) - that; दारहरणम् (dāra-haraṇam) - abduction of the wives; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - attained; reached; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; अवितर्कितम् (avitarkitam) - unexpected; not considered before;]
(Brought back thus by us, having slain that Sindhu army; that abduction of the wives by us has unexpectedly occurred.)
Thus, having destroyed the Sindhu army, we have brought them back; and this abduction of the wives by us has happened unexpectedly. (03-257-8)
दुःखश्चायं वने वासो मृगयायां च जीविका। हिंसा च मृगजातीनां वनौकोभिर्वनौकसाम् ॥ ज्ञातिभिर्विप्रवासश्च मिथ्या व्यवसितैरयम् ॥०३-२५७-९॥
duḥkhaś cāyaṃ vane vāso mṛgayāyāṃ ca jīvikā | hiṃsā ca mṛgajātīnāṃ vanaukobhir vanaukasām || jñātibhir vipravāsaś ca mithyā vyavasitair ayam ||03-257-9||
[दुःखः (duḥkhaḥ) - suffering; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; वने (vane) - in the forest; वासः (vāsaḥ) - dwelling; मृगयायाम् (mṛgayāyām) - in hunting; च (ca) - and; जीविका (jīvikā) - livelihood; हिंसा (hiṃsā) - killing; च (ca) - and; मृगजातीनाम् (mṛgajātīnām) - of animal species; वनौकोभिः (vanaukobhiḥ) - by forest-dwellers; वनौकसाम् (vanaukasām) - of the forest-dwellers; ज्ञातिभिः (jñātibhiḥ) - by relations; विप्रवासः (vipravāsaḥ) - exile; च (ca) - and; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsely; व्यवसितैः (vyavasitaiḥ) - by wrong decisions; अयम् (ayam) - this;]
(Suffering and this dwelling in the forest, and livelihood by hunting; and the killing of animal species by forest-dwellers, of the forest-dwellers; exile by relations and this (due to) false decisions.)
This suffering, living in the forest, subsisting by hunting; the slaughter of animals by forest-dwellers, exile caused by relatives and by mistaken decisions—such is this situation. (03-257-9)
अस्ति नूनं मया कश्चिदल्पभाग्यतरो नरः। भवता दृष्टपूर्वो वा श्रुतपूर्वोऽपि वा भवेत् ॥०३-२५७-१०॥
asti nūnaṃ mayā kaścid-alpa-bhāgyataro naraḥ। bhavatā dṛṣṭapūrvo vā śrutapūrvo'pi vā bhavet ॥03-257-10॥
[अस्ति (asti) - there is; नूनं (nūnam) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; अल्पभाग्यतरः (alpa-bhāgyataraḥ) - of lesser fortune; नरः (naraḥ) - man; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; दृष्टपूर्वः (dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ) - seen before; वा (vā) - or; श्रुतपूर्वः (śrutapūrvaḥ) - heard before; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be;]
(There is indeed by me someone of lesser fortune man; by you seen before or heard before even or may be.)
Indeed, there must be some man of lesser fortune than I, whom you have seen before or perhaps even heard of. (03-257-10)
