पुलस्त्यस्य तु यः क्रोधादर्धदेहोऽभवन्मुनिः। विश्रवा नाम सक्रोधः स वैश्रवणमैक्षत ॥०३-२५९-१॥
pulastyasya tu yaḥ krodhād ardha-dehaḥ abhavat muniḥ। viśravā nāma sakrodhaḥ sa vaiśravaṇam aikṣata ॥03-259-1॥
[पुलस्त्यस्य (pulastyasya) - of Pulastya; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - from anger; अर्धदेहः (ardha-dehaḥ) - half-bodied; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; विश्रवा (viśravā) - Viśravā; नाम (nāma) - named; स (sa) - he; सक्रोधः (sakrodhaḥ) - with anger; वैश्रवणम् (vaiśravaṇam) - Vaiśravaṇa; ऐक्षत् (aikṣata) - looked at;]
(But the sage, who from anger became half-bodied, of Pulastya, Viśravā by name, he with anger looked at Vaiśravaṇa.)
But Viśravā, the sage, who was born as Pulastya's half-bodied son out of anger, looked with anger at Vaiśravaṇa. (03-259-1)
बुबुधे तं तु सक्रोधं पितरं राक्षसेश्वरः। कुबेरस्तत्प्रसादार्थं यतते स्म सदा नृप ॥०३-२५९-२॥
bubudhe taṁ tu sakrodhaṁ pitaraṁ rākṣaseśvaraḥ। kuberas tat-prasādārthaṁ yatate sma sadā nṛpa ॥03-259-2॥
[बुबुधे (bubudhe) - (he) became aware; तं (taṁ) - him; तु (tu) - but; सक्रोधं (sakrodhaṁ) - with anger; पितरं (pitaraṁ) - the father; राक्षसेश्वरः (rākṣaseśvaraḥ) - the lord of the rākṣasas; कुबेरः (kuberaḥ) - Kubera; तत्-प्रसादार्थं (tat-prasādārthaṁ) - for the sake of his favor; यतते (yatate) - strives; स्म (sma) - indeed; सदा (sadā) - always; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(The lord of the rākṣasas became aware of his father, but with anger. Kubera always indeed strives, O king, for the sake of his favor.)
O king, Kubera always indeed strove to win the favor of his father, but the lord of the rākṣasas became aware of him with anger. (03-259-2)
स राजराजो लङ्कायां निवसन्नरवाहनः। राक्षसीः प्रददौ तिस्रः पितुर्वै परिचारिकाः ॥०३-२५९-३॥
sa rājarājo laṅkāyāṃ nivasannaravāhanaḥ। rākṣasīḥ pradadau tisraḥ piturvai paricārikāḥ॥03-259-3॥
[स (sa) - he; राजराजः (rājarājaḥ) - king of kings; लङ्कायाम् (laṅkāyām) - in Laṅkā; निवसन् (nivasan) - dwelling; अरवाहनः (aravāhanaḥ) - Naravāhana; राक्षसीः (rākṣasīḥ) - rākṣasī-s; प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; तिस्रः (tisraḥ) - three; पितुः (pituḥ) - of (his) father; वै (vai) - indeed; परिचारिकाः (paricārikāḥ) - attendants;]
(He, the king of kings, Naravāhana, dwelling in Laṅkā, gave three rākṣasī attendants of (his) father indeed.)
Naravāhana, the king of kings residing in Laṅkā, gave three rākṣasī attendants who had belonged to his father. (03-259-3)
तास्तदा तं महात्मानं सन्तोषयितुमुद्यताः। ऋषिं भरतशार्दूल नृत्तगीतविशारदाः ॥०३-२५९-४॥
tās tadā taṁ mahātmānaṁ santoṣayitumudyatāḥ। ṛṣiṁ bharataśārdūla nṛttagītaviśāradāḥ॥03-259-4॥
[ताः (tāḥ) - they (feminine plural); तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; तं (taṁ) - him; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - great-souled; सन्तोषयितुम् (santoṣayitum) - to please; उद्यताः (udyatāḥ) - endeavored; prepared; ऋषिं (ṛṣim) - sage; भरतशार्दूल (bharataśārdūla) - O tiger of the Bharatas; (address to Rāma or Bharata) नृत्तगीतविशारदाः (nṛttagītaviśāradāḥ) - skilled in dance and song;]
(They then him, the great-souled, to please, endeavored; the sage, O tiger of the Bharatas, skilled in dance and song.)
Then they, skilled in dance and song, endeavored to please that great-souled sage, O tiger of the Bharatas. (3-259-4)
पुष्पोत्कटा च राका च मालिनी च विशां पते। अन्योन्यस्पर्धया राजञ्श्रेयस्कामाः सुमध्यमाः ॥०३-२५९-५॥
puṣpotkaṭā ca rākā ca mālinī ca viśāṃ pate। anyonya-spardhayā rājañ-śreyas-kāmāḥ su-madhyamāḥ ॥03-259-5॥
[पुष्पोत्कटा (puṣpotkaṭā) - puṣpa-utkaṭā—one resplendent with flowers; च (ca) - and; राका (rākā) - Rākā (full moon); च (ca) - and; मालिनी (mālinī) - Mālinī—one with a garland; च (ca) - and; विशां (viśāṃ) - of the peoples; पते (pate) - O lord; अन्योन्यस्पर्धया (anyonya-spardhayā) - with mutual rivalry; राजन् (rājan) - O king; श्रेयस्कामाः (śreyas-kāmāḥ) - desirous of excellence; सुमध्यमाः (su-madhyamāḥ) - having beautiful waists;]
(puṣpotkaṭā and rākā and mālinī and, O lord of the peoples, with mutual rivalry, O king, desirous of excellence, having beautiful waists.)
O king, Puṣpotkaṭā, Rākā, and Mālinī—all women of beautiful waists—each desirous of supremacy, vied with one another, O lord of the people. (03-259-5)
तासां स भगवांस्तुष्टो महात्मा प्रददौ वरान्। लोकपालोपमान्पुत्रानेकैकस्या यथेप्सितान् ॥०३-२५९-६॥
tāsāṃ sa bhagavāṃstuṣṭo mahātmā pradadau varān। lokapālopamānputrānekaikasyā yathepsitān॥03-259-6॥
[तासां (tāsāṃ) - of them (the women/goddesses); स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - being pleased; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled; प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; वरान् (varān) - boons; लोकपालोपमान् (lokapālopamān) - equal to guardians of the worlds; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; एकैकस्याः (ekaikasyāḥ) - to each one; यथ (yath) - as; इप्सितान् (ipsitān) - desired (by them);]
(Of them, he, the Lord, being pleased, great-souled, gave boons: sons equal to the guardians of the worlds to each one, as desired.)
The Lord, being pleased with them, the great-souled one gave boons—sons equal to the guardians of the worlds—to each one as she desired. (03-259-6)
पुष्पोत्कटायां जज्ञाते द्वौ पुत्रौ राक्षसेश्वरौ। कुम्भकर्णदशग्रीवौ बलेनाप्रतिमौ भुवि ॥०३-२५९-७॥
puṣpotkaṭāyāṃ jajñāte dvau putrau rākṣaseśvarau। kumbhakarṇadaśagrīvau balenāpratimau bhuvi ॥03-259-7॥
[पुष्पोत्कटायां (puṣpotkaṭāyām) - in Puṣpotkaṭā; जज्ञाते (jajñāte) - were born; द्वौ (dvau) - two; पुत्रौ (putrau) - sons; राक्षसेश्वरौ (rākṣaseśvarau) - lords of the rākṣasas; कुम्भकर्णदशग्रीवौ (kumbhakarṇadaśagrīvau) - Kumbhakarṇa and Daśagrīva; बलेन (balena) - in strength; अप्रतिमौ (apratimau) - without equal; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth;]
(In Puṣpotkaṭā were born two sons, lords of the rākṣasas, Kumbhakarṇa and Daśagrīva, in strength without equal on the earth.)
In Puṣpotkaṭā two sons were born—lords of the rākṣasas, Kumbhakarṇa and Daśagrīva—who were unmatched in strength on earth. (03-259-7)
मालिनी जनयामास पुत्रमेकं विभीषणम्। राकायां मिथुनं जज्ञे खरः शूर्पणखा तथा ॥०३-२५९-८॥
mālinī janayāmāsa putram ekaṃ vibhīṣaṇam। rākāyāṃ mithunaṃ jajñe kharaḥ śūrpaṇakhā tathā॥03-259-8॥
[मालिनी (mālinī) - (she named) Mālinī; जनयामास (janayāmāsa) - gave birth; पुत्रम् (putram) - a son; एकम् (ekaṃ) - one; विभीषणम् (vibhīṣaṇam) - Vibhīṣaṇa; राकायां (rākāyāṃ) - in (the wife) Rākā; मिथुनम् (mithunam) - a pair; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; खरः (kharaḥ) - Khara; शूर्पणखा (śūrpaṇakhā) - Śūrpaṇakhā; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Mālinī gave birth to one son, Vibhīṣaṇa. In (the wife) Rākā, a pair was born: Khara, Śūrpaṇakhā also.)
Mālinī gave birth to a single son, Vibhīṣaṇa. From Rākā were born twins: Khara and Śūrpaṇakhā. (03-259-8)
विभीषणस्तु रूपेण सर्वेभ्योऽभ्यधिकोऽभवत्। स बभूव महाभागो धर्मगोप्ता क्रियारतिः ॥०३-२५९-९॥
vibhīṣaṇas tu rūpeṇa sarvebhyo 'bhyadhiko 'bhavat। sa babhūva mahābhāgo dharmagoptā kriyāratiḥ॥03-259-9॥
[विभीषणः (vibhīṣaṇaḥ) - Vibhishana; (a proper name, Rama’s brother); तुः (tu) - but; however; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by form; in appearance; सर्वेभ्यः (sarvebhyaḥ) - from all; than all; अभ्यधिकः ('abhyadhikaḥ) - exceeding; superior; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; सः (saḥ) - he; बभूव (babhūva) - became; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - very fortunate; highly blessed; धर्मगोप्ता (dharmagoptā) - protector of dharma; one who upholds righteousness; क्रियारतिः (kriyāratiḥ) - delighted in action; devoted to performing (ritual) acts;]
(Vibhishana but by form from all exceeding became. He became very fortunate protector of dharma, delighted in action.)
But Vibhishana surpassed everyone in appearance. He became a greatly fortunate one, a protector of righteousness, and a devotee of right action. (03-259-9)
दशग्रीवस्तु सर्वेषां ज्येष्ठो राक्षसपुङ्गवः। महोत्साहो महावीर्यो महासत्त्वपराक्रमः ॥०३-२५९-१०॥
daśagrīvastu sarveṣāṃ jyeṣṭho rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ। mahotsāho mahāvīryo mahāsattvaparākramaḥ॥03-259-10॥
[दशग्रीवः (daśagrīvaḥ) - the ten-necked (one); तु (tu) - but; indeed; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; राक्षसपुङ्गवः (rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ) - the chief among Rākṣasas; महत्-उत्साहः (mahat-utsāhaḥ) - greatly energetic; महा-वीर्यः (mahā-vīryaḥ) - having great strength; महा-सत्त्व-पराक्रमः (mahā-sattva-parākramaḥ) - possessing immense courage and valor;]
(But the ten-necked (one), eldest of all, chief among Rākṣasas, with great energy, with great strength, possessing immense courage and valor.)
But Daśagrīva, the eldest and foremost among all Rākṣasas, was full of great energy, mighty strength, and immense valor. (03-259-10)
कुम्भकर्णो बलेनासीत्सर्वेभ्योऽभ्यधिकस्तदा। मायावी रणशौण्डश्च रौद्रश्च रजनीचरः ॥०३-२५९-११॥
kumbhakarṇo balenāsītsarvebhyo'bhyadhikastadā। māyāvī raṇaśauṇḍaś ca raudraś ca rajanīcaraḥ ॥03-259-11॥
[कुम्भकर्णः (kumbhakarṇaḥ) - Kumbhakarṇa; (proper noun); बलेन (balena) - by strength; by might; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सर्वेभ्यः (sarvebhyaḥ) - than all; than everyone; अभ्यधिकः (abhyadhikaḥ) - superior; exceeding; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; मायावी (māyāvī) - possessing illusion; a magician; रणशौण्डः (raṇaśauṇḍaḥ) - skilled in battle; च (ca) - and; रौद्रः (raudraḥ) - fierce; च (ca) - and; रजनीचरः (rajanīcaraḥ) - night-wanderer; (a demon);]
(Kumbhakarṇa by strength was then than all exceeding; possessing illusion, skilled in battle and fierce and night-wanderer.)
At that time, Kumbhakarṇa, by his might, surpassed all others; he was a master of illusions, skilled in battle, fierce, and a night-wandering demon. (03-259-11)
खरो धनुषि विक्रान्तो ब्रह्मद्विट्पिशिताशनः। सिद्धविघ्नकरी चापि रौद्रा शूर्पणखा तथा ॥०३-२५९-१२॥
kharaḥ dhanuṣi vikrāntaḥ brahma-dviṭ-piśita-aśanaḥ। siddha-vighna-karī ca api raudrā śūrpaṇakhā tathā ॥03-259-12॥
[खरः (kharaḥ) - Khara (proper noun; name of the rākṣasa); धनुषि (dhanuṣi) - on the bow; [locative singular of dhanuṣ]; विक्रान्तः (vikrāntaḥ) - powerful; courageous; ब्रह्मद्विट् (brahma-dviṭ) - hater of Brahmins; पिशिताशनः (piśita-aśanaḥ) - eater of flesh; सिद्धविघ्नकरी (siddha-vighna-karī) - obstructer of siddhas; one who harms perfected beings; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; रौद्रा (raudrā) - fierce; terrible; शूर्पणखा (śūrpaṇakhā) - Śūrpaṇakhā (proper noun; name of the rākṣasī); तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Khara, on the bow, powerful, hater of Brahmins, eater of flesh; obstructer of siddhas, and also fierce Śūrpaṇakhā likewise.)
Khara, who was powerful with his bow, a hater of Brahmins and an eater of flesh; and likewise fierce Śūrpaṇakhā, who obstructed the siddhas, also were there. (03-259-12)
सर्वे वेदविदः शूराः सर्वे सुचरितव्रताः। ऊषुः पित्रा सह रता गन्धमादनपर्वते ॥०३-२५९-१३॥
sarve vedavidaḥ śūrāḥ sarve sucaritavratāḥ। ūṣuḥ pitrā saha ratā gandhamādanaparvate॥03-259-13॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; वेदविदः (vedavidaḥ) - knowers of the Veda; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; brave ones; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सुचरितव्रताः (sucarita-vratāḥ) - those who have good conduct and vows; ऊषुः (ūṣuḥ) - they dwelt; पित्रा (pitrā) - with their father; सह (saha) - together with; रता (ratā) - delighted; devoted; गन्धमादनपर्वते (gandhamādana-parvate) - on Gandhamādana mountain;]
(All knowers of the Veda, heroes, all those with good conduct and vows, dwelt together with their father, delighted, on Gandhamādana mountain.)
All those who knew the Vedas, who were heroic, and of excellent conduct and vows, lived together joyfully with their father on the Gandhamādana mountain. (03-259-13)
ततो वैश्रवणं तत्र ददृशुर्नरवाहनम्। पित्रा सार्धं समासीनमृद्ध्या परमया युतम् ॥०३-२५९-१४॥
tato vaiśravaṇaṃ tatra dadṛśur naravāhanam। pitrā sārdhaṃ samāsīnam ṛddhyā paramayā yutam॥03-259-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वैश्रवणम् (vaiśravaṇam) - Vaiśravaṇa; तत्र (tatra) - there; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; नरवाहनम् (naravāhanam) - Naravāhana; पित्रा (pitrā) - with (his) father; सार्धम् (sārddham) - together; समासीनम् (samāsīnam) - sitting; ऋद्ध्या (ṛddhyā) - with prosperity; परमया (paramayā) - supreme; युतम् (yutam) - endowed (with);]
(Then Vaiśravaṇa there they saw Naravāhana with his father together sitting with prosperity supreme endowed (with).)
Then, there, they saw Vaiśravaṇa—Naravāhana—sitting together with his father, endowed with supreme prosperity. (03-259-14)
जातस्पर्धास्ततस्ते तु तपसे धृतनिश्चयाः। ब्रह्माणं तोषयामासुर्घोरेण तपसा तदा ॥०३-२५९-१५॥
jātaspardhās tataḥ te tu tapase dhṛtaniscayāḥ। brahmāṇaṃ toṣayām āsuḥ ghoreṇa tapasā tadā॥03-259-15॥
[जातस्पर्धाः (jātaspardhāḥ) - born rivalry; (those with) rivalry arisen; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; तपसे (tapase) - for austerity; for penance; धृतनिश्चयाः (dhṛtaniscayāḥ) - having firm resolve; steadfast in determination; ब्रह्माणं (brahmāṇam) - Brahmā; (the deity Brahman); तोषयाम् (toṣayām) - caused to be pleased; tried to satisfy; आसुः (āsuḥ) - they became; they performed; घोरेण (ghoreṇa) - with terrible; intense; तपसा (tapasā) - with penance; with austerity; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(Born of rivalry, then they but for penance, with firm resolve, Brahmā they caused to be pleased with terrible penance at that time.)
Then, being filled with rivalry and steadfast in their resolve for penance, they pleased Brahmā at that time through intense austerity. (03-259-15)
अतिष्ठदेकपादेन सहस्रं परिवत्सरान्। वायुभक्षो दशग्रीवः पञ्चाग्निः सुसमाहितः ॥०३-२५९-१६॥
atiṣṭhad-ekapādena sahasraṁ parivatsarān। vāyubhakṣo daśagrīvaḥ pañcāgniḥ susamāhitaḥ ॥03-259-16॥
[अतिष्ठत् (atiṣṭhat) - he stood;, एकपादेन (ekapādena) - on one foot;, सहस्रं (sahasraṁ) - a thousand;, परिवत्सरान् (parivatsarān) - years;, वायुभक्षः (vāyubhakṣaḥ) - subsisting on air;, दशग्रीवः (daśagrīvaḥ) - Daśagrīva;, पञ्चाग्निः (pañcāgniḥ) - with the five fires;, सुसमाहितः (susamāhitaḥ) - well concentrated;]
(He stood on one foot for a thousand years; subsisting on air, Daśagrīva, with the five fires, (was) well concentrated.)
Daśagrīva stood on one foot for a thousand years, sustaining himself on air, amidst the five fires, deeply concentrated. (03-259-16)
अधःशायी कुम्भकर्णो यताहारो यतव्रतः। विभीषणः शीर्णपर्णमेकमभ्यवहारयत् ॥०३-२५९-१७॥
adhaḥśāyī kumbhakarṇo yata-āhāro yata-vrataḥ। vibhīṣaṇaḥ śīrṇa-parṇam ekam abhyavahārayat ॥03-259-17॥
[अधःशायी (adhaḥśāyī) - lying below; कुम्भकर्णः (kumbhakarṇaḥ) - Kumbhakarna; यत (yata) - self-controlled; आहारः (āhāraḥ) - food; यत (yata) - self-controlled; व्रतः (vrataḥ) - in vow; विभीषणः (vibhīṣaṇaḥ) - Vibhishana; शीर्णपर्णम् (śīrṇa-parṇam) - withered leaf; एकम् (ekam) - one; अभ्यवहारयत् (abhyavahārayat) - he ate;]
(Lying below, Kumbhakarna, self-controlled in food, self-controlled in vow; Vibhishana ate one withered leaf.)
Kumbhakarna, lying below, was self-restrained in food and vow; Vibhishana ate only a single withered leaf. (03-259-17)
उपवासरतिर्धीमान्सदा जप्यपरायणः। तमेव कालमातिष्ठत्तीव्रं तप उदारधीः ॥०३-२५९-१८॥
upavāsaratirdhīmānsadā japyaparāyaṇaḥ। tameva kālamātiṣṭhattīvraṃ tapa udāradhīḥ ॥03-259-18॥
[उपवासरतिः (upavāsaratiḥ) - one whose delight is in fasting; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; सदा (sadā) - always; जप्यपरायणः (japyaparāyaṇaḥ) - devoted to recitation; तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - indeed; कालम् (kālam) - time; आतिष्ठत् (ātiṣṭhat) - he observed; तीव्रं (tīvram) - intense; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; उदारधीः (udāradhīḥ) - one of noble mind;]
(One whose delight is in fasting, wise, always devoted to recitation, him indeed, the time he observed; intense austerity, one of noble mind.)
The wise man, always devoted to fasting and the recitation of prayers, of noble mind, observed that very time practicing intense austerities. (03-259-18)
खरः शूर्पणखा चैव तेषां वै तप्यतां तपः। परिचर्यां च रक्षां च चक्रतुर्हृष्टमानसौ ॥०३-२५९-१९॥
kharaḥ śūrpaṇakhā caiva teṣāṃ vai tapyatāṃ tapaḥ। paricaryāṃ ca rakṣāṃ ca cakratur hṛṣṭamānasau ॥03-259-19॥
[खरः (kharaḥ) - Khara; (proper noun); शूर्पणखा (śūrpaṇakhā) - Śūrpaṇakhā; (proper noun); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; वै (vai) - truly; तप्यतां (tapyatām) - (of those) engaged in austerities; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; परिचर्यां (paricaryāṃ) - service; च (ca) - and; रक्षां (rakṣāṃ) - protection; च (ca) - and; चक्रतुः (cakratuḥ) - (the two) did; हृष्टमानसौ (hṛṣṭamānasau) - with delighted minds;]
(Khara and Śūrpaṇakhā indeed of them truly (of those) engaged in austerities, austerity, service and protection and (the two) did with delighted minds.)
Khara and Śūrpaṇakhā, with delighted minds, indeed rendered service and protection to those practicing austerities. (03-259-19)
पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु शिरश्छित्त्वा दशाननः। जुहोत्यग्नौ दुराधर्षस्तेनातुष्यज्जगत्प्रभुः ॥०३-२५९-२०॥
pūrṇe varṣa-sahasre tu śiraś-chittvā daśānanaḥ। juhoty-agnau durādharṣas tenātuṣyaj-jagat-prabhuḥ॥03-259-20॥
[पूर्णे (pūrṇe) - when completed; (having been) fulfilled; वर्षसहस्रे (varṣa-sahasre) - a thousand years; तु (tu) - but; शिरश्छित्त्वा (śiraḥ-chittvā) - having cut off his own head; दशाननः (daśānanaḥ) - the ten-headed (one); जुहोति (juhoti) - offers (as oblation); अग्नौ (agnau) - into the fire; दुराधर्षः (durādharṣaḥ) - hard to assault; unassailable; तेन (tena) - by that; अतुष्यत् (atuṣyat) - became pleased; जगत्प्रभुः (jagat-prabhuḥ) - the lord of the worlds;]
(When the thousand years were completed, but, having cut off his own head, the ten-headed (one), unassailable, offers (it) into the fire; by that, the lord of the worlds became pleased.)

ततो ब्रह्मा स्वयं गत्वा तपसस्तान्न्यवारयत्। प्रलोभ्य वरदानेन सर्वानेव पृथक्पृथक् ॥०३-२५९-२१॥
tato brahmā svayaṃ gatvā tapasas tān nyavārayat। pralobhya varadānena sarvān eva pṛthak pṛthak ॥03-259-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; तपसः (tapasas) - from penance; तान् (tān) - them; न्यवारयत् (nyavārayat) - he prevented; प्रलोभ्य (pralobhya) - having enticed; वरदानेन (varadānena) - with the granting of boons; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; पृथक्पृथक् (pṛthak pṛthak) - separately;]
(Then Brahmā himself, having gone, from penance them prevented, having enticed with the granting of boons, all indeed separately.)
Then Brahmā himself went and prevented them from penance, enticing all of them separately by offering boons. (03-259-21)

prīto'smi vo nivartadhvaṃ varān vṛṇuta putrakāḥ. yadyad iṣṭam ṛte tv ekam amaratvaṃ tathāstu tat ॥03-259-22॥
[प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; वः (vaḥ) - with you; निवर्तध्वम् (nivartadhvam) - (you all) return; वरान् (varān) - boons; वृणुत (vṛṇuta) - choose; पुत्रकाः (putrakāḥ) - O sons; यत्-यत् (yat-yat) - whatever; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired; ऋते (ṛte) - except; त्व (tv) - you; एकम् (ekam) - one; अमरत्वम् (amaratvam) - immortality; तथा (tathā) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Pleased I am with you, return (you all), O sons, choose boons; whatever is desired except for the one—immortality—for you, thus let that be.)
I am pleased with you; return, O sons, choose boons. Whatever is desired, except for the one—immortality—for you, let that be so. (03-259-22)
यद्यदग्नौ हुतं सर्वं शिरस्ते महदीप्सया। तथैव तानि ते देहे भविष्यन्ति यथेप्सितम् ॥०३-२५९-२३॥
yadyad agnau hutaṃ sarvaṃ śiras te mahad īpsayā। tathaiva tāni te dehe bhaviṣyanti yath-epsitam ॥03-259-23॥
[यद्यद् (yadyad) (yadyad) - whatsoever; whatever; अग्नौ (agnau) (agnau) - in the fire; हुतम् (hutam) (hutam) - offered (as oblation); सर्वम् (sarvam) (sarvam) - all; शिरस् (śiras) (śiras) - with the head; ते (te) (te) - your; महदीप्सया (mahad īpsayā) (mahad īpsayā) - with great desire; तथैव (tathaiva) (tathaiva) - in the same way; तानि (tāni) (tāni) - those things; ते (te) (te) - your; देहे (dehe) (dehe) - in (your) body; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; will be; यथेप्सितम् (yath-epsitam) (yath-epsitam) - as desired;]
(Whatever with great desire all was offered by your head into the fire, in the same way, those things in your body will become as desired.)
Whatever you have offered entirely into the fire with your head and great desire, in the same way, those very things will manifest in your body as you desire. (03-259-23)
वैरूप्यं च न ते देहे कामरूपधरस्तथा। भविष्यसि रणेऽरीणां विजेतासि न संशयः ॥०३-२५९-२४॥
vairūpyaṃ ca na te dehe kāmarūpadharas tathā। bhaviṣyasi raṇe’rīṇāṃ vijetā asi na saṃśayaḥ॥03-259-24॥
[वैरूप्यं (vairūpyam) - ugliness; disfigurement; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; देहे (dehe) - in (your) body; कामरूपधरः (kāmarūpadharaḥ) - assuming any form at will; तथा (tathā) - thus; in this way; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; अरीणां (arīṇāṃ) - of enemies; विजेता (vijetā) - conqueror; असि (asi) - you are; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Ugliness and not in your body, assuming form at will, thus you will become; in battle of enemies, conqueror you are, not doubt.)
Ugliness will not be present in your body, and you will have the ability to assume any form at will. Thus, you will become the conqueror of enemies in battle; there is no doubt. (03-259-24)
रावण उवाच॥

[गन्धर्वदेवासुरतः (gandharvadevāsurataḥ) - from gandharvas, devas, asuras; यक्षराक्षसतः (yakṣarākṣasataḥ) - from yakṣas, rākṣasas; तथा (tathā) - also; सर्पकिंनरभूतेभ्यः (sarpakiṃnarabhūtebhyaḥ) - from serpents, kinnaras, beings (bhūtas); न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; भूयात् (bhūyāt) - let there be; पराभवः (parābhavaḥ) - defeat;]
(From gandharvas, devas, asuras; from yakṣas, rākṣasas also; from serpents, kinnaras, beings; not to me let there be defeat.)
May there not be defeat for me from gandharvas, devas, asuras, yakṣas, rākṣasas, serpents, kinnaras, or beings. (03-259-25)

ya ete kīrtitāḥ sarve na tebhyo'sti bhayaṃ tava। ṛte manuṣyād bhadraṃ te tathā tadvihitaṃ mayā॥03-259-26॥
[य (ya) - who; एते (ete) - these; कीर्तिताः (kīrtitāḥ) - mentioned; सर्वे (sarve) - all; न (na) - not; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from them; अस्ति (asti) - is; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; तव (tava) - for you; ऋते (ṛte) - except; मनुष्यāt् (manuṣyāt) - from human; भद्रम् (bhadram) - welfare; ते (te) - to you; तथा (tathā) - so; तद्विहितम् (tadvihitam) - that which is ordained; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Who these mentioned all, not from them is fear for you; except from human, welfare to you so; that ordained by me.)
Of all those who have been mentioned, there is no fear for you from them; except from humans. Welfare to you; so it was ordained by me. (03-259-26)

evam-ukto daśagrīvas tuṣṭaḥ samabhavat tadā। avamene hi durbuddhir manuṣyān puruṣādakaḥ॥03-259-27॥
[एवमुक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; दशग्रीवः (daśagrīvaḥ) - Daśagrīva; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - pleased; समभवत् (samabhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then; अवमेने (avamene) - he disregarded; हि (hi) - indeed; दुर्बुद्धिः (durbuddhiḥ) - the ill-minded one; मनुष्यान् (manuṣyān) - men; पुरुषादकः (puruṣādakaḥ) - man-eater;]
(Thus addressed, Daśagrīva was pleased then. The ill-minded man-eater indeed disregarded men.)
When thus addressed, Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa) was pleased. That ill-minded man-eater indeed held men in contempt. (03-259-27)
कुम्भकर्णमथोवाच तथैव प्रपितामहः। स वव्रे महतीं निद्रां तमसा ग्रस्तचेतनः ॥०३-२५९-२८॥
kumbhakarṇam atho vāca tathaiva prapitāmahaḥ। sa vavre mahatīṃ nidrāṃ tamasā grastacetanaḥ॥03-259-28॥
[कुम्भकर्णम् (kumbhakarṇam) - Kumbhakarṇa; (proper noun); अथ (atha) - then; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; प्रपितामहः (prapitāmahaḥ) - the great grandsire; (Brahmā); सः (saḥ) - he; (Kumbhakarṇa); वव्रे (vavre) - chose (as a boon); महतीम् (mahatīm) - great; निद्राम् (nidrām) - sleep; तमसा (tamasā) - by darkness; ग्रस्तचेतनः (grastacetanaḥ) - one whose consciousness is seized;]
(Kumbhakarṇa then spoke in the same way to the great grandsire. He chose great sleep, his consciousness seized by darkness.)
Then Kumbhakarṇa spoke in the same way to the great grandsire. In that state, he requested great sleep, with his mind overpowered by darkness. (03-259-28)
तथा भविष्यतीत्युक्त्वा विभीषणमुवाच ह। वरं वृणीष्व पुत्र त्वं प्रीतोऽस्मीति पुनः पुनः ॥०३-२५९-२९॥
tathā bhaviṣyatīty-uktvā vibhīṣaṇam uvāca ha. varaṁ vṛṇīṣva putra tvaṁ prīto'smīti punaḥ punaḥ ॥03-259-29॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - it will be; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; विभीषणम् (vibhīṣaṇam) - Vibhīṣaṇa (proper noun, accusative singular); उवाच (uvāca) - he said; ह (ha) - indeed; वरम् (varam) - boon; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; पुत्र (putra) - son; त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Thus it will be—having said thus, he spoke to Vibhīṣaṇa indeed: Choose a boon, son, you—I am pleased—thus again and again.)
Having said, "Thus it shall be", he then spoke to Vibhīṣaṇa: "Choose a boon, my son; I am pleased"—thus again and again. (03-259-29)
विभीषण उवाच॥

paramāpad-gatasya-api nā-dharme me matir bhavet। aśikṣitaṃ ca bhagavan brahmāstraṃ pratibhātu me॥03-259-30॥
[परमापद्गतस्यापि (paramāpad-gatasya-api) - even of one who has attained the highest state; न (na) - not; अधर्मे (adharme) - in unrighteousness; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; अशिक्षितं (aśikṣitam) - unlearned; च (ca) - and; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; ब्रह्मास्त्रं (brahmāstram) - the Brahma weapon; प्रतिभातु (pratibhātu) - may it appear; मे (me) - to me;]
(Even for one who has attained the highest state, my mind should not be in unrighteousness. And, O Lord, may the unlearned Brahma weapon appear to me.)
May my mind not incline toward unrighteousness, even if I reach the highest achievement. And, O Lord, may the knowledge of the Brahma weapon, though unlearned, occur to me. (03-259-30)

yasmād rākṣasa-yonau te jātasya amitrakarśana। na adharme ramate buddhiḥ amaratvaṃ dadāmi te ॥03-259-31॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because of which; राक्षसयोनौ (rākṣasa-yonau) - in the lineage of Rākṣasas; ते (te) - your; जातस्य (jātasya) - having been born; अमित्रकर्शन (amitrakarśana) - O tormentor of enemies; न (na) - not; अधर्मे (adharme) - in unrighteousness; रमते (ramate) - delights; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - the intellect; अमरत्वं (amaratvam) - immortality; ददामि (dadāmi) - I grant; ते (te) - to you;]
(Because of which, in the lineage of Rākṣasas, to you having been born, O tormentor of enemies, the intellect does not delight in unrighteousness. Immortality I grant to you.)
Because you were born in the lineage of Rākṣasas, O tormentor of enemies, your mind does not delight in unrighteousness. I grant you immortality. (03-259-31)

rākṣasastu varaṃ labdhvā daśagrīvo viśāṃ pate। laṅkāyāścyāvayāmāsa yudhi jitvā dhaneśvaram॥03-259-32॥
[राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the demon; तु (tu) - but; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; दशग्रीवः (daśagrīvaḥ) - the ten-headed one; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; लङ्कायाः (laṅkāyāḥ) - of Laṅkā; च्यावयामास (cyāvayāmāsa) - he drove out; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; धनेश्वरम् (dhaneśvaram) - the lord of wealth;]
(But the demon, having obtained the boon, the ten-headed one, O lord of men, of Laṅkā drove out, in battle having conquered the lord of wealth.)
But the demon, the ten-headed one (Rāvaṇa), O lord of men, after obtaining the boon, conquered the lord of wealth in battle and drove him out of Laṅkā. (03-259-32)
हित्वा स भगवाँल्लङ्कामाविशद्गन्धमादनम्। गन्धर्वयक्षानुगतो रक्षःकिम्पुरुषैः सह ॥०३-२५९-३३॥
hitvā sa bhagavān laṅkām āviśad gandhamādanam। gandharva-yakṣa-anugataḥ rakṣaḥ-kimpuruṣaiḥ saha ॥03-259-33॥
[हित्वा (hitvā) (hitvā) - having abandoned; स (sa) (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) (bhagavān) - the venerable; लङ्काम् (laṅkām) (laṅkām) - Laṅkā (the city); आविशत् (āviśat) (āviśat) - entered; गन्धमादनम् (gandhamādanam) (gandhamādanam) - Gandhamādana (mountain); गन्धर्वयक्षानुगतः (gandharva-yakṣa-anugataḥ) (gandharva-yakṣa-anugataḥ) - accompanied by Gandharvas and Yakṣas; रक्षःकिम्पुरुषैः (rakṣaḥ-kimpuruṣaiḥ) (rakṣaḥ-kimpuruṣaiḥ) - with Rākṣasas and Kimpuruṣas; सह (saha) (saha) - along with;]
(Having abandoned Laṅkā, he, the venerable, entered Gandhamādana, accompanied by Gandharvas and Yakṣas, with Rākṣasas and Kimpuruṣas along with (them).)
Leaving Laṅkā, the venerable one entered Gandhamādana mountain, accompanied by Gandharvas, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, and Kimpuruṣas. (03-259-33)
विमानं पुष्पकं तस्य जहाराक्रम्य रावणः। शशाप तं वैश्रवणो न त्वामेतद्वहिष्यति ॥०३-२५९-३४॥
vimānaṃ puṣpakaṃ tasya jahārākramya rāvaṇaḥ। śaśāpa taṃ vaiśravaṇo na tvāmetadvahiṣyati ॥03-259-34॥
[विमानं (vimānam) - vehicle; पुष्पकं (puṣpakam) - Puṣpaka (name of the vehicle); तस्य (tasya) - his; जहार (jahāra) - he took away; he seized; आक्रम्य (ākramya) - having ascended; having mounted; रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; शशाप (śaśāpa) - he cursed; तं (taṃ) - him; वैश्रवणो (vaiśravaṇaḥ) - Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera); न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - thee; you; एतत् (etat) - this; वहिष्यति (vahiṣyati) - will bear; will carry;]
(Vehicle Puṣpaka his he took away having mounted Rāvaṇa. He cursed him Vaiśravaṇa—not thee this will carry.)
Rāvaṇa, having mounted his Puṣpaka vehicle, took it away. Vaiśravaṇa cursed him, saying, "This will not bear thee." (03-259-34)
यस्तु त्वां समरे हन्ता तमेवैतद्वहिष्यति। अवमन्य गुरुं मां च क्षिप्रं त्वं न भविष्यसि ॥०३-२५९-३५॥
yastu tvāṁ samare hantā tamevaitadvahiṣyati। avamany guruṁ māṁ ca kṣipraṁ tvaṁ na bhaviṣyasi॥03-259-35॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; समरे (samare) - in battle; हन्ता (hantā) - slayer; तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - only; एतत् (etat) - this; वहिष्यति (vahiṣyati) - will bear; अवमन्य (avamanya) - disregarding; गुरुम् (gurum) - the guru; माम् (mām) - me; च (ca) - and; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; त्वम् (tvam) - you; न (na) - not; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - will become;]
(But he who, in battle, is the slayer of you—he alone will bear this. Disregarding the guru and me, you will not become (anything) quickly.)
But the one who kills you in battle—he alone will bear this. If you disregard your teacher and me, you will quickly cease to exist. (03-259-35)
विभीषणस्तु धर्मात्मा सतां धर्ममनुस्मरन्। अन्वगच्छन्महाराज श्रिया परमया युतः ॥०३-२५९-३६॥
vibhīṣaṇas tu dharmātmā satāṃ dharmam anusmaran। anvagacchan mahārāja śriyā paramayā yutaḥ ॥03-259-36॥
[विभीषणः (vibhīṣaṇaḥ) - Vibhīṣaṇa; तु (tu) - but; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - of righteous soul; सताम् (satām) - of the virtuous; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; righteousness; अनुस्मरन् (anusmaran) - remembering; अन्वगच्छन् (anvagacchan) - following; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; श्रिया (śriyā) - with glory; परमया (paramayā) - supreme; युतः (yutaḥ) - endowed;]
(Vibhīṣaṇa but, of righteous soul, of the virtuous, dharma remembering, following, O great king, with glory, supreme, endowed.)
But Vibhīṣaṇa, who was righteous and mindful of the dharma of the virtuous, O great king, followed, endowed with supreme glory. (03-259-36)
तस्मै स भगवांस्तुष्टो भ्राता भ्रात्रे धनेश्वरः। सेनापत्यं ददौ धीमान्यक्षराक्षससेनयोः ॥०३-२५९-३७॥
tasmai sa bhagavāṃstuṣṭo bhrātā bhrātre dhaneśvaraḥ। senāpatyaṃ dadau dhīmānyakṣarākṣasasenayoḥ॥03-259-37॥

(To him, he, the venerable one, being pleased, the brother, to his brother, Dhaneśvara, command of the army, gave, the wise one, of the armies of the Yakṣas and Rākṣasas.)
To him, the venerable and wise Dhaneśvara, who is the brother, being pleased, gave to his brother the command of the armies of the Yakṣas and Rākṣasas. (03-259-37)
राक्षसाः पुरुषादाश्च पिशाचाश्च महाबलाः। सर्वे समेत्य राजानमभ्यषिञ्चद्दशाननम् ॥०३-२५९-३८॥
rākṣasāḥ puruṣādāś ca piśācāś ca mahābalāḥ। sarve sametya rājānam abhyaṣiñcad daśānanam ॥03-259-38॥
[राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; (demons;) पुरुषादाः (puruṣādāḥ) - cannibals; (man-eaters;) च (ca) - and; पिशाचाः (piśācāḥ) - piśācas; (ghouls;) च (ca) - and; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - very powerful; (of great strength;) सर्वे (sarve) - all; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; (the king;) अभ्यषिञ्चत् (abhyaṣiñcat) - anointed; दशाननम् (daśānanam) - Daśānana; (the ten-headed one; Rāvaṇa;);]
(rākṣasas, cannibals and piśācas, very powerful; all having assembled, the king anointed Daśānana.)
The rākṣasas, cannibals, and the very powerful piśācas all gathered together and anointed Daśānana (the ten-headed one, Rāvaṇa) as king. (03-259-38)
दशग्रीवस्तु दैत्यानां देवानां च बलोत्कटः। आक्रम्य रत्नान्यहरत्कामरूपी विहङ्गमः ॥०३-२५९-३९॥
daśagrīvastu daityānāṁ devānāṁ ca balotkaṭaḥ। ākramya ratnānyaharatkāmarūpī vihaṅgamaḥ॥03-259-39॥
[दशग्रीवः (daśagrīvaḥ) - ten-necked (Rāvaṇa); तु (tu) - but; दैत्यानाम् (daityānām) - of the demons; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; च (ca) - and; बलोत्कटः (balotkaṭaḥ) - of exceeding strength; आक्रम्य (ākramya) - having assaulted; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; अहरत् (aharat) - seized; कामरूपी (kāmarūpī) - assuming any form at will; विहङ्गमः (vihaṅgamaḥ) - bird; ॥०३-२५९-३९॥ (॥03-259-39॥) - ;]
(The ten-necked one but, of the demons, of the gods and, of exceeding strength, having assaulted, gems seized; assuming any form at will, (like a) bird.)
But the ten-necked one, powerful among the demons and gods, having assaulted them, seized their gems; being able to assume any form at will, like a bird. (03-259-39)
रावयामास लोकान्यत्तस्माद्रावण उच्यते। दशग्रीवः कामबलो देवानां भयमादधत् ॥०३-२५९-४०॥
rāvayāmāsa lokānyattasmādrāvaṇa ucyate। daśagrīvaḥ kāmabalo devānāṁ bhayamādadhat॥03-259-40॥
[रावयामास (rāvayāmāsa) - made cry out; made wail; लोकान् (lokān) - the worlds; यत्तस्मात् (yat tasmāt) - because of this; रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa (the one who makes others cry); उच्यते (ucyate) - is called; दशग्रीवः (daśagrīvaḥ) - the ten-necked (one); कामबलः (kāmabalaḥ) - mighty with desire; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; आदधत् (ādadhat) - produced; created;]
(He made the worlds cry out; because of this, he is called 'Rāvaṇa'. The ten-necked one, mighty with desire, produced fear of the gods.)
