मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

ततो ब्रह्मर्षयः सिद्धा देवराजर्षयस्तथा। हव्यवाहं पुरस्कृत्य ब्रह्माणं शरणं गताः ॥०३-२६०-१॥
tato brahmarṣayaḥ siddhā devarājarṣayas tathā। havyavāhaṃ puraskṛtya brahmāṇaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatāḥ ॥03-260-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ब्रह्मर्षयः (brahmarṣayaḥ) - the Brahmarṣis; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; देवराजर्षयः (devarājarṣayaḥ) - the royal seers among the gods; तथा (tathā) - also; हव्यवाहम् (havyavāham) - Agni; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - placing in the front; ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - to Brahmā; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - for refuge; गताः (gatāḥ) - went;]
(Then the Brahmarṣis, the perfected beings, as well as the royal seers among the gods, placing Agni in the front, went to Brahmā for refuge.)
Then the Brahmarṣis, Siddhas, and divine royal seers, led by Agni, approached Brahmā for refuge. (03-260-1)
अग्निरुवाच॥

यः स विश्रवसः पुत्रो दशग्रीवो महाबलः। अवध्यो वरदानेन कृतो भगवता पुरा ॥०३-२६०-२॥
yaḥ sa viśravasaḥ putro daśagrīvo mahābalaḥ। avadhyo varadānena kṛto bhagavatā purā ॥03-260-2॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; स (sa) - he; विश्रवसः (viśravasaḥ) - Viśravas (of Viśravas, genitive singular); पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; दशग्रीवः (daśagrīvaḥ) - Daśagrīva (ten-necked); महा-बलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; अवध्यः (avadhyaḥ) - invulnerable; वर-दानेन (varadānena) - by boon-giving; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the divine one; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Who, he, Viśravas’ son, Daśagrīva, of great strength, invulnerable, by boon-giving, made, by the divine one, formerly.)
That Daśagrīva, the greatly powerful son of Viśravas, was formerly made invulnerable by the boon granted by the divine being. (03-260-2)
स बाधते प्रजाः सर्वा विप्रकारैर्महाबलः। ततो नस्त्रातु भगवन्नान्यस्त्राता हि विद्यते ॥०३-२६०-३॥
sa bādhate prajāḥ sarvā viprakārairmahābalaḥ। tato nastrātu bhagavannānyastrātā hi vidyate ॥03-260-3॥
[स (sa) (sa) - he; बाधते (bādhate) (bādhate) - harasses; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) (prajāḥ) - creatures; सर्वा (sarvā) (sarvā) - all; विप्रकारैः (viprakāraiḥ) (viprakāraiḥ) - by various means; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) (mahābalaḥ) - one of great strength; ततः (tataḥ) (tataḥ) - therefore; नः (naḥ) (naḥ) - us; त्रातु (trātu) (trātu) - may protect; भगवन् (bhagavan) (bhagavan) - O Lord; न (na) (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) (anyaḥ) - other; त्राता (trātā) (trātā) - protector; हि (hi) (hi) - indeed; विद्यते (vidyate) (vidyate) - is found;]
(He harasses all creatures by various means, being of great strength. Therefore, may you, O Lord, protect us; not another protector indeed is found (exists).)
He, of great strength, harasses all creatures by various means. Therefore, O Lord, protect us; for truly, there is no other protector. (03-260-3)
ब्रह्मोवाच॥

Brahmā said.
न स देवासुरैः शक्यो युद्धे जेतुं विभावसो। विहितं तत्र यत्कार्यमभितस्तस्य निग्रहे ॥०३-२६०-४॥
na sa devāsuraiḥ śakyo yuddhe jetuṃ vibhāvaso। vihitaṃ tatra yat kāryam abhitas tasya nigrahe ॥03-260-4॥
[न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; देवासुरैः (devāsuraiḥ) - by gods and asuras; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; जेतुम् (jetum) - to be conquered; विभावसः (vibhāvaso) - of Vibhāvasu (Fire); विहितम् (vihitam) - ordained; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत् (yat) - which; कार्यं (kāryam) - should be done; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - for; तस्य (tasya) - his; निग्रहे (nigrahe) - in restraint;]
(He is not possible to be conquered in battle by gods and asuras, O Vibhāvasu; that which should be done there for his restraint is ordained.)
He cannot be conquered in battle by gods and asuras, O Vibhāvasu; therefore, whatever should be done for his restraint has been prescribed. (03-260-4)
तदर्थमवतीर्णोऽसौ मन्नियोगाच्चतुर्भुजः। विष्णुः प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठः स कर्मैतत्करिष्यति ॥०३-२६०-५॥
tadartham avatīrṇo'sau manniyogāc caturbhujaḥ। viṣṇuḥ praharatāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ sa karmaitat kariṣyati ॥03-260-5॥
[तदर्थम् (tadartham) - for that purpose; अवतीर्णः (avatīrṇaḥ) - descended; असौ (asau) - he; मन्नियोगात् (man-niyogāt) - by my assignment; चतुर्भुजः (caturbhujaḥ) - four-armed; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; प्रहरताम् (praharatām) - of those fighting; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; सः (saḥ) - he; कर्म (karma) - act; एतत् (etat) - this; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do;]
(For that purpose descended he, by my assignment, four-armed Viṣṇu, of those fighting the best; he this act will do.)
For that purpose, that four-armed Viṣṇu has descended by my command; he who is the best among fighters will accomplish this task. (03-260-5)

पितामहस्ततस्तेषां संनिधौ वाक्यमब्रवीत्। सर्वैर्देवगणैः सार्धं सम्भवध्वं महीतले ॥०३-२६०-६॥
pitāmahastatasteṣāṃ sannidhau vākyamabravīt। sarvairdevagaṇaiḥ sārdhaṃ sambhavadhvaṃ mahītale ॥03-260-6॥
[पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - Grandfather (the Creator Brahmā); ततः (tataḥ) - then; तेषाम् (teṣām) - in their; संनिधौ (sannidhau) - presence; vicinity; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; statement; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; with all; देवगणैः (devagaṇaiḥ) - divine hosts; gods; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together; with; सम्भवध्वम् (sambhavadhvam) - be born; arise; महीतले (mahītale) - on the earth;]
(Grandfather then in their presence spoke words: 'With all the hosts of gods together, be born on the earth.')
Then Grandfather (Brahmā), in their presence, said, 'Together with all the hosts of gods, you should be born on earth.' (03-260-6)
विष्णोः सहायानृक्षीषु वानरीषु च सर्वशः। जनयध्वं सुतान्वीरान्कामरूपबलान्वितान् ॥०३-२६०-७॥
viṣṇoḥ sahāyān ṛkṣīṣu vānarīṣu ca sarvaśaḥ। janayadhvaṃ sutān vīrān kāmarūpa-balānvitān॥03-260-7॥
[विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; सहायान् (sahāyān) - helpers; ऋक्षीषु (ṛkṣīṣu) - among the female bears; वानरीषु (vānarīṣu) - among the female monkeys; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; जनयध्वम् (janayadhvam) - you all beget; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; कामरूपबलान्वितान् (kāmarūpa-balānvitān) - endowed with the power to assume desired forms and strength;]
(Of Viṣṇu helpers among the female bears and among the female monkeys and in every way you all beget sons, heroes, endowed with the power to assume desired forms and strength.)
As helpers of Viṣṇu, in every way, you all beget heroic sons among the female bears and monkeys, who are endowed with the strength and the ability to assume forms at will. (03-260-7)
ततो भागानुभागेन देवगन्धर्वदानवाः। अवतर्तुं महीं सर्वे रञ्जयामासुरञ्जसा ॥०३-२६०-८॥
tato bhāgānubhāgena devagandharvadānavāḥ। avatartuṃ mahīṃ sarve rañjayāmāsurañjasā ॥03-260-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भाग-अनुभागेन (bhāga-anubhāgena) - by share and portion; देव-गन्धर्व-दानवाः (deva-gandharva-dānavāḥ) - the gods, gandharvas, and dānavas; अवतर्तुम् (avatartum) - to descend; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; सर्वे (sarve) - all; रञ्जयामासुः (rañjayāmāsuḥ) - they colored; रञ्जसा (rañjasā) - with color;]
(Then, by share and portion, the gods, gandharvas, and dānavas, all to descend upon the earth, colored (it) with color.)
Then, by division and portion, all the gods, gandharvas, and dānavas descended to the earth and colored it completely. (03-260-8)
तेषां समक्षं गन्धर्वीं दुन्दुभीं नाम नामतः। शशास वरदो देवो देवकार्यार्थसिद्धये ॥०३-२६०-९॥
teṣāṃ samakṣaṃ gandharvīṃ dundubhīṃ nāma nāmataḥ। śaśāsa varado devo devakāryārthasiddhaye ॥03-260-9॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; समक्षं (samakṣam) - in the presence (of); गन्धर्वीं (gandharvīm) - Gandharvī (a female Gandharva, proper noun); दुन्दुभीं (dundubhīm) - Dundubhi (proper noun); नाम (nāma) - by name; नामतः (nāmataḥ) - by (her) name; शशास (śaśāsa) - he commanded; वरदः (varadaḥ) - the grantor of boons; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; देवकार्यार्थसिद्धये (devakāryārthasiddhaye) - for the accomplishment of the divine purpose;]
(Of them, in the presence (of), Gandharvī (named) Dundubhi by name, he commanded, the grantor of boons, the god, for the accomplishment of the divine purpose.)
In their presence, the god who grants boons commanded Gandharvī named Dundubhi, in order to accomplish the divine purpose. (03-260-9)
पितामहवचः श्रुत्वा गन्धर्वी दुन्दुभी ततः। मन्थरा मानुषे लोके कुब्जा समभवत्तदा ॥०३-२६०-१०॥
pitāmahavacaḥ śrutvā gandharvī dundubhī tataḥ। mantharā mānuṣe loke kubjā samabhavattadā ॥03-260-10॥
[पितामहवचः (pitāmaha-vacaḥ) - the word of the grandsire (Brahmā); श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; गन्धर्वी (gandharvī) - the Gandharva woman; दुन्दुभी (dundubhī) - Dundubhī; ततः (tataḥ) - thereupon; मन्थरा (mantharā) - Mantharā; मानुषे (mānuṣe) - in the human; लोके (loke) - world; कुब्जा (kubjā) - hunchbacked woman; समभवत्तदा (samabhavat tadā) - was born then;]
(Having heard the word of the grandsire, the Gandharva woman Dundubhī then as Mantharā was born as a hunchbacked woman in the human world at that time.)
Hearing the words of the grandsire, the Gandharva woman Dundubhī was then born as Mantharā, a hunchbacked woman, in the human world. (03-260-10)
शक्रप्रभृतयश्चैव सर्वे ते सुरसत्तमाः। वानरर्क्षवरस्त्रीषु जनयामासुरात्मजान् ॥ तेऽन्ववर्तन्पितॄन्सर्वे यशसा च बलेन च ॥०३-२६०-११॥
śakra-prabhṛtayaś caiva sarve te sura-sattamāḥ। vānara-ṛkṣa-vara-strīṣu janayām āsur ātma-jān ॥ te 'nvavartan pitṝn sarve yaśasā ca balena ca ॥03-260-11॥
[शक्रप्रभृतयः (śakra-prabhṛtayaḥ) - Indra and the rest; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ते (te) - those; सुरसत्तमाः (sura-sattamāḥ) - the best of gods; वानरर्क्षवरस्त्रीषु (vānara-ṛkṣa-vara-strīṣu) - in the women of noble monkeys and bears; जनयाम् (janayām) - begat; आसुः (āsuḥ) - they generated; आत्मजान् (ātma-jān) - their own sons; ते (te) - they; अन्ववर्तन् (anvavartan) - followed; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - their fathers; सर्वे (sarve) - all; यशसा (yaśasā) - in fame; च (ca) - and; बलेन (balena) - in strength; च (ca) - and;]
(Indra and the rest and indeed all those best of gods in the women of noble monkeys and bears begat their own sons. They all followed their fathers in fame and in strength.)
Indra and the others, all these foremost gods, indeed begot their own sons in the women of the best among monkeys and bears. All of them emulated their fathers, both in fame and in strength. (03-260-11)
भेत्तारो गिरिशृङ्गाणां शालतालशिलायुधाः। वज्रसंहननाः सर्वे सर्वे चौघबलास्तथा ॥०३-२६०-१२॥
bhettāro giriśṛṅgāṇāṃ śālatālaśilāyudhāḥ। vajrasaṃhananāḥ sarve sarve caughabalās tathā॥03-260-12॥
[भेत्तारः (bhettāraḥ) - piercers; गिरिशृङ्गाणाम् (giriśṛṅgāṇām) - of mountain peaks; शालतालशिलायुधाः (śālatālaśilāyudhāḥ) - having śāla, tāla (palm) and stone as weapons; वज्रसंहननाः (vajrasaṃhananāḥ) - having the hardness of a thunderbolt; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; ऊघबलाः (ūghabalāḥ) - having the strength of a multitude; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Piercers of mountain peaks, having śāla, tāla (palm), and stone as weapons, having the hardness of a thunderbolt, all, all, and possessing the strength of a multitude, likewise.)
They pierce mountain peaks, armed with śāla, tāla (palm) trees, and stones as their weapons, all as hard as thunderbolts, each one possessing immense collective strength. (03-260-12)
कामवीर्यधराश्चैव सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः। नागायुतसमप्राणा वायुवेगसमा जवे ॥ यत्रेच्छकनिवासाश्च केचिदत्र वनौकसः ॥०३-२६०-१३॥
kāmavīryadharāścaiva sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ। nāgāyutasamaprāṇā vāyuvegasamā jave॥ yatrecchakanivāsāśca kecidatra vanaukasaḥ॥03-260-13॥
[कामवीर्यधराः (kāmavīryadharāḥ) - possessors of the strength and energy of desire; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; युद्धविशारदाः (yuddhaviśāradāḥ) - skilled in battle; नागायुतसमप्राणा (nāgāyutasamaprāṇā) - with life-force equal to a multitude of elephants; वायुवेगसमा (vāyuvegasamā) - equal to the speed of wind; जवे (jave) - in swiftness; यत्र (yatra) - where; इच्छकनिवासाः (icchakaniwāsāḥ) - those dwelling as they please; च (ca) - and; केचित् (kecit) - some; अत्र (atra) - here; वनौकसः (vanaukasaḥ) - forest-dwellers;]
(Possessors of the strength and energy of desire, and indeed, all skilled in battle, with life-force equal to a multitude of elephants, equal to the speed of wind in swiftness; where some here are forest-dwellers residing according to their own wishes.)
All of them, possessing the vigor of desire, skilled in battle, possessing the strength of a multitude of elephants and swiftness equal to the wind; and here some forest-dwellers reside wherever they wish. (03-260-13)
एवं विधाय तत्सर्वं भगवाँल्लोकभावनः। मन्थरां बोधयामास यद्यत्कार्यं यथा यथा ॥०३-२६०-१४॥
evaṃ vidhāya tatsarvaṃ bhagavān lokabhāvanaḥ. mantharāṃ bodhayāmāsa yadyat kāryaṃ yathā yathā ॥03-260-14॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विधाय (vidhāya) - having arranged; तत्सर्वं (tatsarvaṃ) - all that; भगवाँ (bhagavān) - the blessed one; लोकभावनः (lokabhāvanaḥ) - the creator of the world; मन्थरां (mantharāṃ) - Manthara; बोधयामास (bodhayāmāsa) - instructed; यद्यत् (yadyat) - whatsoever; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - action; यथा यथा (yathā yathā) - in whatever manner;]
(Thus having arranged all that, the blessed one, creator of the world, instructed Manthara about whatever actions, in whatever manner.)
Having thus arranged everything, the blessed creator of the world instructed Manthara in all the actions she was to perform, in every detail. (03-260-14)
सा तद्वचनमाज्ञाय तथा चक्रे मनोजवा। इतश्चेतश्च गच्छन्ती वैरसन्धुक्षणे रता ॥०३-२६०-१५॥
sā tadvacanam ājñāya tathā cakre manojavā. itaś cetaś ca gacchantī vaira-sandhukṣaṇe ratā ॥03-260-15॥
[सा (sā) - she; तद्वचनम् (tadvacanam) - that speech; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; तथा (tathā) - thus; चक्रे (cakre) - did; मनोजवा (manojavā) - whose speed is like the mind; इतः (itaḥ) - here; च (ca) - and; इतः (itaḥ) - there; च (ca) - and; गच्छन्ती (gacchantī) - going; वैरसन्धुक्षणे (vaira-sandhukṣaṇe) - in inciting enmity; रता (ratā) - delighted;]
(She, having understood that speech, thus did (acted) whose speed is like the mind, here and there going, delighted in inciting enmity.)
She, whose speed was like the mind, upon understanding those words, acted accordingly; moving here and there, she delighted in fanning enmity. (03-260-15)
