uktaṃ bhagavatā janma rāmādīnāṃ pṛthakpṛthak। prasthānakāraṇaṃ brahmañśrotumicchāmi kat hyatām॥03-261-1॥

O Brahman, the separate births of Rāma and others have been declared by the Blessed One; I desire to hear the cause of their departure—may it be explained. (03-261-1)
कथं दाशरथी वीरौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। प्रस्थापितौ वनं ब्रह्म मैथिली च यशस्विनी ॥०३-२६१-२॥

जातपुत्रो दशरथः प्रीतिमानभवन्नृपः। क्रियारतिर्धर्मपरः सततं वृद्धसेविता ॥०३-२६१-३॥
jātaputro daśarathaḥ prītimān abhavan nṛpaḥ। kriyāratiḥ dharmaparaḥ satataṃ vṛddhasevitā ॥03-261-3॥

क्रमेण चास्य ते पुत्रा व्यवर्धन्त महौजसः। वेदेषु सरहस्येषु धनुर्वेदे च पारगाः ॥०३-२६१-४॥
krameṇa cāsya te putrā vyavardhanta mahaujasaḥ। vedeṣu sarahasyeṣu dhanurvede ca pārāgāḥ॥03-261-4॥
[क्रमेण (krameṇa) - by degrees; in order; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; ते (te) - those; पुत्रा (putrā) - sons; व्यवर्धन्त (vyavardhanta) - grew; increased; महौजसः (mahaujasaḥ) - of great energy; वेदेषु (vedeṣu) - in the Vedas; स रहस्येषु (sa rahasyeṣu) - with the secrets; धनुर्वेदे (dhanurvede) - in the science of archery; च (ca) - and; पारगाः (pārāgāḥ) - adepts; accomplished in;]
(By degrees and his those sons grew, of great energy, in the Vedas with the secrets, in the science of archery and adept.)
His sons, in due course, grew greatly in strength, becoming accomplished in the Vedas and their secrets, as well as in the science of archery. (03-261-4)
चरितब्रह्मचर्यास्ते कृतदाराश्च पार्थिव। यदा तदा दशरथः प्रीतिमानभवत्सुखी ॥०३-२६१-५॥
caritabrahmacaryāste kṛtadārāś ca pārthiva। yadā tadā daśarathaḥ prītimān abhavat sukhī ॥03-261-5॥
[चरितब्रह्मचर्याः (caritabrahmacaryāḥ) - having observed celibacy; ते (te) - they; कृतदाराः (kṛtadārāḥ) - having taken wives; च (ca) - and; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - king; यदा (yadā) - when; तदा (tadā) - then; दशरथः (daśarathaḥ) - Daśaratha; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - full of delight; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; सुखी (sukhī) - happy;]
(Having observed celibacy, they, having taken wives, and the king, when then Daśaratha became full of delight, happy.)

ज्येष्ठो रामोऽभवत्तेषां रमयामास हि प्रजाः। मनोहरतया धीमान्पितुर्हृदयतोषणः ॥०३-२६१-६॥

(Eldest Rāma became of them; indeed caused to rejoice subjects; with charm wise of (his) father's heart pleaser.)
Rāma, the eldest among them, became the delight of his father's heart—a wise one, he caused the subjects to rejoice by his charm. (03-261-6)
ततः स राजा मतिमान्मत्वात्मानं वयोऽधिकम्। मन्त्रयामास सचिवैर्धर्मज्ञैश्च पुरोहितैः ॥०३-२६१-७॥
tataḥ sa rājā matimān matvā ātmānam vayaḥ-adhikam। mantrayām āsa sacivaiḥ dharma-jñaiḥ ca purohitaiḥ॥03-261-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; मतिमान् (matimān) - wise; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - himself; वयः-अधिकम् (vayaḥ-adhikam) - aged; मन्त्रयाम् आस (mantrayām āsa) - deliberated; सचिवैः (sacivaiḥ) - with ministers; धर्मज्ञैः च (dharma-jñaiḥ ca) - with those who know dharma; पुरोहितैः (purohitaiḥ) - with priests;]
(Then he, the wise king, having considered himself aged, deliberated with ministers, with those who know dharma, and with priests.)
Then the wise king, realizing his own advanced age, took counsel with his ministers, those versed in dharma, and his priests. (03-261-7)
अभिषेकाय रामस्य यौवराज्येन भारत। प्राप्तकालं च ते सर्वे मेनिरे मन्त्रिसत्तमाः ॥०३-२६१-८॥
abhiṣekāya rāmasya yauvarājyena bhārata। prāptakālaṃ ca te sarve menire mantrisattamāḥ ॥03-261-8॥

O Bhārata, all the foremost ministers considered the consecration of Rāma as heir-apparent to be timely. (03-261-8)
लोहिताक्षं महाबाहुं मत्तमातङ्गगामिनम्। दीर्घबाहुं महोरस्कं नीलकुञ्चितमूर्धजम् ॥०३-२६१-९॥
lohitākṣaṁ mahābāhuṁ mattamātaṅgagāminam। dīrghabāhuṁ mahoraskaṁ nīlakuñcitamūrdhajam ॥03-261-9॥
[लोहिताक्षं (lohitākṣam) - red-eyed; महाबाहुं (mahābāhum) - mighty-armed; मत्तमातङ्गगामिनम् (mattamātaṅgagāminam) - one who moves like an intoxicated elephant; दीर्घबाहुं (dīrghabāhum) - long-armed; महोर्स्कं (mahoraskam) - broad-chested; नीलकुञ्चितमूर्धजम् (nīlakuñcitamūrdhajam) - with dark and curly hair;]
(Red-eyed, mighty-armed, moving like an intoxicated elephant, long-armed, broad-chested, with dark and curly hair.)
He has red eyes, mighty and long arms, a gait like an intoxicated elephant, a broad chest, and dark curly hair. (03-261-9)
दीप्यमानं श्रिया वीरं शक्रादनवमं बले। पारगं सर्वधर्माणां बृहस्पतिसमं मतौ ॥०३-२६१-१०॥
dīpyamānaṃ śriyā vīraṃ śakrādanavamam bale. pāragaṃ sarvadharmāṇāṃ bṛhaspatisamaṃ matau ॥03-261-10॥
[दीप्यमानं (dīpyamānam) - shining; श्रियाः (śriyā) - with splendour; वीरं (vīram) - hero; शक्रात् (śakrāt) - than Indra; अनवमं (anavamam) - not inferior; बले (bale) - in strength; पारगं (pāragam) - one who has gone across; सर्वधर्माणां (sarvadharmāṇām) - of all laws; बृहस्पतिसमं (bṛhaspatisamam) - equal to Bṛhaspati; मतौ (matau) - in counsel;]
(Shining with splendour, a hero, not inferior to Indra in strength, one who has crossed over all laws, equal to Bṛhaspati in counsel.)

सर्वानुरक्तप्रकृतिं सर्वविद्याविशारदम्। जितेन्द्रियममित्राणामपि दृष्टिमनोहरम् ॥०३-२६१-११॥
sarvānuraktaprakṛtiṁ sarvavidyāviśāradam। jitendriyamamitrāṇāmapi dṛṣṭimanoharam ॥03-261-11॥
[सर्वानुरक्तप्रकृतिं (sarvānuraktaprakṛtim) - of one whose nature is loved by all; सर्वविद्याविशारदम् (sarvavidyāviśāradam) - skilled in all branches of knowledge; जितेन्द्रियम् (jitendriyam) - one who has conquered the senses; अमित्राणाम् (amitrāṇām) - of enemies; अपि (api) - even; दृष्टिमनोहरम् (dṛṣṭimanoharam) - charming to behold;]
(Of one whose nature is loved by all, skilled in all branches of knowledge, who has conquered the senses, even to enemies charming to behold.)
His nature was beloved by all, he was skilled in all branches of knowledge, had conquered his senses, and was pleasing to behold even to his enemies. (03-261-11)
नियन्तारमसाधूनां गोप्तारं धर्मचारिणाम्। धृतिमन्तमनाधृष्यं जेतारमपराजितम् ॥०३-२६१-१२॥
niyantāram asādhūnāṃ goptāraṃ dharmacāriṇām। dhṛtimantam anādhṛṣyaṃ jetāram aparājitam ॥03-261-12॥
[नियन्तारम् (niyantāram) - controller; असाधूनाम् (asādhūnām) - of the wicked; गोप्तारम् (goptāram) - protector; धर्मचारिणाम् (dharmacāriṇām) - of the followers of dharma; धृतिमन्तम् (dhṛtimantam) - steadfast; अनाधृष्यम् (anādhṛṣyam) - unassailable; जेतारम् (jetāram) - conqueror; अपराजितम् (aparājitam) - unconquered;]
(Controller of the wicked, protector of the followers of dharma, steadfast, unassailable, conqueror, unconquered.)
He is the controller of the wicked, the protector of those who live by dharma, steadfast, unassailable, a conqueror, and undefeated. (03-261-12)
पुत्रं राजा दशरथः कौसल्यानन्दवर्धनम्। संदृश्य परमां प्रीतिमगच्छत्कुरुनन्दन ॥०३-२६१-१३॥
putraṃ rājā daśarathaḥ kausalyānandavardhanam। sandṛśya paramāṃ prītim agacchat kurunandana ॥03-261-13॥

चिन्तयंश्च महातेजा गुणान्रामस्य वीर्यवान्। अभ्यभाषत भद्रं ते प्रीयमाणः पुरोहितम् ॥०३-२६१-१४॥
cintayaṃś ca mahātejā guṇān rāmasya vīryavān। abhyabhāṣata bhadraṃ te prīyamāṇaḥ purohitam ॥03-261-14॥
[चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking; च (ca) - and; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great splendor; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - mighty; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - spoke; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - good fortune; ते (te) - to you; प्रीयमाणः (prīyamāṇaḥ) - being pleased; पुरोहितम् (purohitam) - to the priest;]

अद्य पुष्यो निशि ब्रह्मन्पुण्यं योगमुपैष्यति। सम्भाराः सम्भ्रियन्तां मे रामश्चोपनिमन्त्र्यताम् ॥०३-२६१-१५॥
adya puṣyo niśi brahman puṇyaṃ yogam upaiṣyati। sambhārāḥ sambhriyantāṃ me rāmaś copanimantryatām॥03-261-15॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; पुष्यः (puṣyaḥ) - Puṣya (the lunar asterism); निशि (niśi) - at night; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - auspicious; योगम् (yogam) - conjunction; उपैष्यति (upaiṣyati) - will occur; सम्भाराः (sambhārāḥ) - materials; सम्भ्रियन्ताम् (sambhriyantām) - let (them) be prepared; मे (me) - for me; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; च (ca) - and; उपनिमन्त्र्यताम् (upanimantryatām) - let (him) be invited;]
(Today Puṣya at night, O Brāhmaṇa, auspicious conjunction will occur. Materials let be prepared for me, and Rāma let be invited.)
O Brāhmaṇa, today at night during Puṣya, the auspicious conjunction will occur. Let the materials be prepared for me, and let Rāma also be invited. (03-261-15)
इति तद्राजवचनं प्रतिश्रुत्याथ मन्थरा। कैकेयीमभिगम्येदं काले वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२६१-१६॥
iti tad-rāja-vacanaṁ pratiśrutya-atha mantharā। kaikeyīm abhigamya idaṁ kāle vacanam abravīt॥03-261-16॥

(Thus that king's word having heard, then Manthara, to Kaikeyi having approached, this at the right time word said.)

अद्य कैकेयि दौर्भाग्यं राज्ञा ते ख्यापितं महत्। आशीविषस्त्वां सङ्क्रुद्धश्चण्डो दशति दुर्भगे ॥०३-२६१-१७॥
adya kaikeyi daurbhāgyaṃ rājñā te khyāpitaṃ mahat। āśī-viṣas-tvāṃ saṅkruddhaś-caṇḍo daśati durbhage ॥03-261-17॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; कैकेयि (kaikeyi) - O Kaikeyi; दौर्भाग्यं (daurbhāgyaṃ) - misfortune; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; ते (te) - your; ख्यापितं (khyāpitaṃ) - manifested; महत् (mahat) - great; आशीविषः (āśī-viṣaḥ) - venomous serpent; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddhaḥ) - completely enraged; चण्डः (caṇḍaḥ) - fierce; दशति (daśati) - bites; दुर्भगे (durbhage) - O unfortunate one;]
(Today, O Kaikeyi, your great misfortune has been manifested by the king. A venomous serpent, completely enraged and fierce, bites you, O unfortunate one.)
Today, O Kaikeyi, the king has revealed your great misfortune. A wrathful and fierce serpent bites you, O unfortunate one. (03-261-17)
सुभगा खलु कौसल्या यस्याः पुत्रोऽभिषेक्ष्यते। कुतो हि तव सौभाग्यं यस्याः पुत्रो न राज्यभाक् ॥०३-२६१-१८॥
subhagā khalu kausalyā yasyāḥ putro'bhiṣekṣyate। kuto hi tava saubhāgyaṃ yasyāḥ putro na rājya-bhāk॥03-261-18॥
[सुभगा (subhagā) - fortunate woman; खलु (khalu) - indeed; कौसल्या (kausalyā) - Kausalya; यस्याः (yasyāḥ) - whose; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; अभिषेक्ष्यते (abhiṣekṣyate) - is to be consecrated; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; हि (hi) - indeed; तव (tava) - your; सौभाग्यं (saubhāgyaṃ) - good fortune; यस्याः (yasyāḥ) - whose; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; न (na) - not; राज्यभाक् (rājya-bhāk) - kingdom-enjoyer;]
(Fortunate indeed is Kausalya, whose son is to be consecrated. From where indeed is your good fortune, whose son is not the enjoyer of the kingdom (king)?)
Truly fortunate is Kausalya, whose son will be anointed. But how can you be considered fortunate, when your son does not gain the kingdom? (03-261-18)
सा तद्वचनमाज्ञाय सर्वाभरणभूषिता। वेदीविलग्नमध्येव बिभ्रती रूपमुत्तमम् ॥०३-२६१-१९॥
sā tadvacanam-ājñāya sarvābharaṇa-bhūṣitā। vedīvilagna-madhyeva bibhratī rūpam-uttamam ॥03-261-19॥
[सा (sā) - she; तद्वचनम् (tad-vacanam) - those words; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; सर्वाभरणभूषिता (sarvābharaṇa-bhūṣitā) - adorned with all ornaments; वेदी-विलग्न-मध्ये-इव (vedī-vilagna-madhye-iva) - as if in the midst of an altar; बिभ्रती (bibhratī) - bearing; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]

vivikte patim āsādya hasantīva śucismitā। praṇayaṃ vyañjayantīva madhuraṃ vākyam abravīt ॥03-261-20॥

(In a secluded place, having approached her husband, as if smiling, the pure-smiled (lady), as if expressing affection, sweet words she spoke.)

सत्यप्रतिज्ञ यन्मे त्वं काममेकं निसृष्टवान्। उपाकुरुष्व तद्राजंस्तस्मान्मुच्यस्व सङ्कटात् ॥०३-२६१-२१॥

[सत्यप्रतिज्ञ (satyapratijña) - one truthful in promise; यत् (yat) - that which; मे (me) - for me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कामम् (kāmam) - wish; एकम् (ekam) - one; निसृष्टवान् (nisṛṣṭavān) - have granted; उपाकुरुष्व (upākuruṣva) - fulfill; तत् (tat) - that; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मुच्यस्व (mucyasva) - be released; सङ्कटात् (saṅkaṭāt) - from distress;]
(O truthful in promise, that which for me you have granted one wish, fulfill that, O king, therefore be released from distress.)
O king, you who are truthful in your promise—since you have granted me one wish, fulfill that, and thus be freed from your difficulty. (03-261-21)

varaṃ dadāni te hanta tadgṛhāṇa yadicchasi। avadhyo vadhyatāṃ ko'dya vadhyaḥ ko'dya vimucyatām॥03-261-22॥
[वरम् (varaṃ) - boon; ददानि (dadāni) - I give; ते (te) - to you; हन्त (hanta) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; यद् (yad) - which; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; अवध्यः (avadhyaḥ) - not to be slain; वध्यताम् (vadhyatām) - let be slain; कः (kaḥ) - who; अद्य (adya) - today; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - liable to be slain; कः (kaḥ) - who; अद्य (adya) - today; विमुच्यताम् (vimucyatām) - let be released;]
(A boon I give to you indeed, so accept that which you desire. Let one not to be slain be slain; who today is to be slain, who today let be released.)
I grant you a boon, indeed; therefore, accept whatever you desire. Let one who is not to be slain be slain; decide today who should be slain and who should be released. (03-261-22)
धनं ददानि कस्याद्य ह्रियतां कस्य वा पुनः। ब्राह्मणस्वादिहान्यत्र यत्किञ्चिद्वित्तमस्ति मे ॥०३-२६१-२३॥
dhanaṁ dadāni kasyādya hriyatāṁ kasya vā punaḥ। brāhmaṇasvādihānyatra yatkiñcidvittamasti me॥03-261-23॥
[धनं (dhanaṁ) - wealth; ददानि (dadāni) - shall I give; कस्य (kasya) - to whom; आद्य (ādya) - now; ह्रियतां (hriyatāṁ) - should be taken; कस्य (kasya) - by whom; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; ब्राह्मणस्वादिहा (brāhmaṇasvādihā) - from the Brāhmaṇa and others here; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; यत्किञ्चित् (yatkiñcit) - whatever (there is); वित्तम् (vittam) - wealth; अस्ति (asti) - there is; मे (me) - of me;]
(Wealth shall I give to whom now, or should it be taken by whom again? From the Brāhmaṇa and others here, elsewhere, whatever wealth there is of me.)
To whom should I give wealth now, or by whom should it be taken again? Among the Brāhmaṇa and others here or elsewhere, whatever wealth I have.

सा तद्वचनमाज्ञाय परिगृह्य नराधिपम्। आत्मनो बलमाज्ञाय तत एनमुवाच ह ॥०३-२६१-२४॥
sā tadvacanam-ājñāya parigṛhya narādhipam। ātmano balam-ājñāya tata enam-uvāca ha ॥03-261-24॥
[सा (sā) - she; तद्वचनम् (tadvacanam) - that speech; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; परिगृह्य (parigṛhya) - having accepted; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - the king; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - her own; बलम् (balam) - strength; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having recognized; तत (tata) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(She, having understood that speech, having accepted the king, having recognized her own strength, then indeed spoke to him.)
She, having heard those words and welcomed the king, understood her own strength and then spoke to him. (03-261-24)
आभिषेचनिकं यत्ते रामार्थमुपकल्पितम्। भरतस्तदवाप्नोतु वनं गच्छतु राघवः ॥०३-२६१-२५॥
ābhiṣecanikaṃ yat te rāma-artham upakalpitam। bharataḥ tat avāpnōtu vanaṃ gacchatu rāghavaḥ॥03-261-25॥
[आभिषेचनिकं (ābhiṣecanikaṃ) - related to consecration; यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - to you; रामार्थम् (rāma-artham) - for Rāma; उपकल्पितम् (upakalpitam) - prepared; भरतः (bharataḥ) - Bharata; तत् (tat) - that; अवाप्नोतु (avāpnōtu) - may obtain; वनम् (vanaṃ) - forest; गच्छतु (gacchatu) - may go; राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - Rāghava;]
(Related to consecration, which for you was prepared for Rāma, let Bharata obtain that; to the forest may Rāghava go.)
Let Bharata obtain what was prepared by you for Rāma's consecration; let Rāghava go to the forest. (03-261-25)
स तद्राजा वचः श्रुत्वा विप्रियं दारुणोदयम्। दुःखार्तो भरतश्रेष्ठ न किञ्चिद्व्याजहार ह ॥०३-२६१-२६॥
sa tadrājā vacaḥ śrutvā vipriyaṃ dāruṇodayam। duḥkhārto bharataśreṣṭha na kiñcidvyājahāra ha ॥03-261-26॥
[स (sa) - he; तद्राजा (tadrājā) - that king; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विप्रियं (vipriyaṃ) - unpleasant; दारुणोदयम् (dāruṇodayam) - having cruel arisal; दुःखार्तो (duḥkhārto) - afflicted by sorrow; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; व्याजहार (vyājahāra) - uttered; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(He that king speech having heard unpleasant possessing cruel arisal, afflicted by sorrow, O best of the Bharatas, did not utter anything indeed.)
O best of the Bharatas, that king, hearing the unpleasant and cruel news, afflicted by sorrow, truly did not say anything. (03-261-26)
ततस्तथोक्तं पितरं रामो विज्ञाय वीर्यवान्। वनं प्रतस्थे धर्मात्मा राजा सत्यो भवत्विति ॥०३-२६१-२७॥
tatas tatha-uktaṃ pitaraṃ rāmo vijñāya vīryavān। vanaṃ pratas-the dharmātmā rājā satyo bhavatv iti ॥03-261-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तथोक्तं (tatha-uktam) - thus spoken; पितरं (pitaram) - father; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having understood; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; वनं (vanam) - to the forest; प्रतस्थे (pratasthe) - set out; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous soul; राजा (rājā) - king; सत्यः (satyaḥ) - truthful; भवतु (bhavatu) - may (he) be; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then, having understood his father who had thus spoken, Rāma, powerful, set out for the forest, the righteous-souled king, may he be truthful—thus.)
Then, having understood his father’s words, the powerful and righteous Rāma set out for the forest, saying, "May the king remain true (to his word)." (03-261-27)
तमन्वगच्छल्लक्ष्मीवान्धनुष्माँल्लक्ष्मणस्तदा। सीता च भार्या भद्रं ते वैदेही जनकात्मजा ॥०३-२६१-२८॥
tam anva-gacchat lakṣmī-vān dhanuṣmān lakṣmaṇaḥ tadā। sītā ca bhāryā bhadraṃ te vaidehī janakātmajā ॥03-261-28॥
[तम् (tam) - him; (accusative singular masculine); अन्वगच्छत् (anva-gacchat) - (he) followed; (3rd person singular imperfect, from anu √gam; लक्ष्मीवान् (lakṣmī-vān) - endowed with fortune; prosperous; धनुष्मान् (dhanuṣmān) - armed with a bow; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakṣmaṇa; (proper noun; nominative singular); तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; सीता (sītā) - Sītā; (proper noun; nominative singular feminine;) च (ca) - and; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - well-being; blessing; ते (te) - to you; (dative singular); वैदेही (vaidehī) - daughter of Videha (epithet of Sītā); जनकात्मजा (janakātmajā) - daughter of Janaka;]
(Him followed endowed-with-fortune, armed-with-a-bow Lakṣmaṇa then; Sītā also wife blessing to you Vaidehī daughter of Janaka.)
Then Lakṣmaṇa—prosperous and armed with a bow—followed him; and Sītā, the blessed wife, Vaidehī, daughter of Janaka, (followed as well). (03-261-28)
ततो वनं गते रामे राजा दशरथस्तदा। समयुज्यत देहस्य कालपर्यायधर्मणा ॥०३-२६१-२९॥
tato vanaṃ gate rāme rājā daśarathas tadā। samayujyata dehasya kālaparyāyadharmaṇā ॥03-261-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; वनम् (vanam) - forest; गते (gate) - having gone; रामे (rāme) - Rāma; राजा (rājā) - king; दशरथः (daśarathaḥ) - Daśaratha; तदा (tadā) - then; समयुज्यत (samayujyata) - was joined; देहस्य (dehasya) - of the body; कालपर्यायधर्मणा (kālaparyāyadharmaṇā) - by the law of time's succession;]
(Thereafter, Rāma having gone to the forest, King Daśaratha then was joined (by) the law of time's succession with the body.)
After Rāma went to the forest, King Daśaratha then passed away by the law of time. (03-261-29)
रामं तु गतमाज्ञाय राजानं च तथागतम्। आनाय्य भरतं देवी कैकेयी वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२६१-३०॥
rāmaṁ tu gatamājñāya rājānaṁ ca tathāgatam। ānāyya bharataṁ devī kaikeyī vākyamabravīt॥03-261-30॥
[रामं (rāmaṁ) - Rāma (accusative singular); तु (tu) - but; however; गतं (gatam) - departed; gone; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having perceived; having learned; राजानं (rājānam) - king (accusative singular); च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - similarly; thus; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; come; आनाय्य (ānāyya) - having brought; भरतम् (bharatam) - Bharata (accusative singular); देवी (devī) - the queen; lady; कैकेयी (kaikeyī) - Kaikeyi; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke;]
(But having learned that Rāma had departed and that the king had similarly arrived, having brought Bharata, Queen Kaikeyi spoke words.)
But, having learned of Rāma's departure and the king's arrival, and having brought Bharata, Queen Kaikeyi spoke these words. (03-261-30)
गतो दशरथः स्वर्गं वनस्थौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। गृहाण राज्यं विपुलं क्षेमं निहतकण्टकम् ॥०३-२६१-३१॥
gato daśarathaḥ svargaṃ vanasthau rāmalakṣmaṇau। gṛhāṇa rājyaṃ vipulaṃ kṣemaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam ॥03-261-31॥
[गतः (gataḥ) - gone; (he) has departed; दशरथः (daśarathaḥ) - Daśaratha (the name of a king); स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; वनस्थौ (vanasthau) - dwelling in the forest; (dual) रामलक्ष्मणौ (rāmalakṣmaṇau) - Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa; (dual) गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; विपुलम् (vipulam) - vast; क्षेमम् (kṣemam) - secure; free from harm; निहतकण्टकम् (nihatakaṇṭakam) - having its thorns removed; (rid of enemies;);]
(Gone Daśaratha (is) to heaven; dwelling in the forest are Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa. Accept the kingdom, vast, secure, with its thorns removed.)
Daśaratha has gone to heaven; Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa are dwelling in the forest. Accept this vast and secure kingdom, now rid of dangers. (03-261-31)
तामुवाच स धर्मात्मा नृशंसं बत ते कृतम्। पतिं हत्वा कुलं चेदमुत्साद्य धनलुब्धया ॥०३-२६१-३२॥
tām uvāca sa dharmātmā nṛśaṁsaṁ bata te kṛtam। patiṁ hatvā kulaṁ cedam utsādya dhanalubdhayā ॥03-261-32॥
[ताम् (tām) - to her; उवाच (uvāca) - he spoke; स (sa) - he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; नृशंसं (nṛśaṁsaṁ) - cruel; बत (bata) - alas; ते (te) - your; कृतम् (kṛtam) - act; पतिम् (patiṁ) - husband; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; कुलम् (kulaṁ) - family; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; उत्साद्य (utsādya) - having destroyed; धनलुब्धया (dhanalubdhayā) - by greed for wealth;]
(To her he spoke, the righteous-souled (one): 'Cruel, alas, is your act—having killed the husband, and having destroyed this family, by greed for wealth.')
The righteous man spoke to her: 'Alas, your act is cruel—killing your husband and destroying this family out of greed for wealth.' (03-261-32)
अयशः पातयित्वा मे मूर्ध्नि त्वं कुलपांसने। सकामा भव मे मातरित्युक्त्वा प्ररुरोद ह ॥०३-२६१-३३॥
ayaśaḥ pātayitvā me mūrdhni tvaṃ kulapāṃsane। sakāmā bhava me mātar ity uktvā praruroda ha ॥03-261-33॥
[अयशः (ayaśaḥ) - disgrace; पातयित्वा (pātayitvā) - having caused to fall; मे (me) - on me; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on (my) head; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; कुलपांसने (kulapāṃsane) - O defiler of the lineage; सकामाः (sakāmā) - with fulfilled desires; भव (bhava) - be; मे (me) - for me; मातर् (mātar) - O mother; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; प्ररुरोद (praruroda) - cried aloud; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Having caused disgrace to fall on my head, you, O defiler of the lineage, be one with fulfilled desires for me, O mother—thus having said, he cried aloud indeed.)
After causing disgrace to fall upon my head, you, O defiler of the lineage, be satisfied for my sake, O mother—having uttered thus, he cried out loudly. (03-261-33)
स चारित्रं विशोध्याथ सर्वप्रकृतिसंनिधौ। अन्वयाद्भ्रातरं रामं विनिवर्तनलालसः ॥०३-२६१-३४॥
sa cāritraṃ viśodhyātha sarvaprakṛtisaṃnidhau। anvayādbhātaraṃ rāmaṃ vinivartanalālasaḥ॥03-261-34॥
[स (sa) - he; चारित्रं (cāritram) - character; विशोध्य (viśodhya) - having purified; अथ (atha) - then; सर्वप्रकृतिसंनिधौ (sarvaprakṛtisaṃnidhau) - in the presence of all constituents; अन्वयात् (anvayāt) - by connection; भ्रातरं (bhrātaram) - brother; रामं (rāmam) - Rama; विनिवर्तनलालसः (vinivartanalālasaḥ) - desiring return;]
(He, having purified (his) character then, in the presence of all constituents, by connection (sought) his brother Rama, desiring (his) return.)
He, having purified his character in the presence of all (the people), then sought his brother Rama, longing for his return. (03-261-34)
कौसल्यां च सुमित्रां च कैकेयीं च सुदुःखितः। अग्रे प्रस्थाप्य यानैः स शत्रुघ्नसहितो ययौ ॥०३-२६१-३५॥
kausalyāṃ ca sumitrāṃ ca kaikeyīṃ ca suduḥkhitaḥ। agre prasthāpya yānaiḥ sa śatrughna-sahito yayau॥03-261-35॥
[कौसल्यां (kausalyāṃ) - Kausalya (accusative singular; name of the queen); च (ca) - and; सुमित्रां (sumitrāṃ) - Sumitra (accusative singular; name of the queen); च (ca) - and; कैकेयीं (kaikeyīṃ) - Kaikeyi (accusative singular; name of the queen); च (ca) - and; सुदुःखितः (suduḥkhitaḥ) - greatly distressed; अग्रे (agre) - at the front; प्रस्थाप्य (prasthāpya) - having sent off; यानैः (yānaiḥ) - by vehicles; स (sa) - he; शत्रुघ्नसहितः (śatrughna-sahitaḥ) - together with Shatrughna; ययौ (yayau) - went;]
(Kausalya and Sumitra and Kaikeyi and greatly distressed, having sent [them] forward by vehicles, he together with Shatrughna went.)
Greatly distressed, he sent Kausalya, Sumitra, and Kaikeyi ahead in vehicles and then went along with Shatrughna. (03-261-35)
वसिष्ठवामदेवाभ्यां विप्रैश्चान्यैः सहस्रशः। पौरजानपदैः सार्धं रामानयनकाङ्क्षया ॥०३-२६१-३६॥
vasiṣṭhavāmadevābhyāṃ vipraiś ca anyaiḥ sahasraśaḥ। paurajānapadaiḥ sārdhaṃ rāmānayanakāṅkṣayā॥03-261-36॥
[वसिष्ठ-वामदेवाभ्यां (vasiṣṭha-vāmadevābhyām) - with Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - with brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - with others; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; पौर-जानपदैः (paura-jānapadaiḥ) - with townsmen and country people; सार्धं (sārdham) - together with; राम-आनयन-काङ्क्षया (rāma-ānayana-kāṅkṣayā) - with desire to bring Rāma back;]
(With Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva, with brāhmaṇas and others, by thousands, together with townsmen and country people, with desire to bring Rāma back.)
Thousands, along with Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva, brāhmaṇas, other people, and both townsfolk and villagers, went together desiring Rāma's return. (03-261-36)
ददर्श चित्रकूटस्थं स रामं सहलक्ष्मणम्। तापसानामलङ्कारं धारयन्तं धनुर्धरम् ॥०३-२६१-३७॥
dadarśa citrakūṭasthaṃ sa rāmaṃ sahalakṣmaṇam। tāpasānāmlaṅkāraṃ dhārayantaṃ dhanurdharam ॥03-261-37॥
[ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; चित्रकूटस्थं (citrakūṭastham) - situated on Citrakūṭa; स (sa) - he; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rāma; सहलक्ष्मणम् (sahalakṣmaṇam) - together with Lakṣmaṇa; तापसानाम् (tāpasānām) - of ascetics; अलङ्कारं (alaṅkāram) - ornament; धारयन्तं (dhārayantam) - wearing; धनुर्धरम् (dhanurdharam) - bow-bearer;]
(He saw Rāma situated on Citrakūṭa, together with Lakṣmaṇa, wearing the ornament of ascetics, a bow-bearer.)
He saw Rāma on Citrakūṭa hill, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa, dressed like an ascetic and bearing a bow. (03-261-37)
विसर्जितः स रामेण पितुर्वचनकारिणा। नन्दिग्रामेऽकरोद्राज्यं पुरस्कृत्यास्य पादुके ॥०३-२६१-३८॥
visarjitaḥ sa rāmeṇa pitur-vacanakāriṇā। nandigrāme'karod-rājyaṃ puraskṛtyāsya pāduke॥03-261-38॥
[विसर्जितः (visarjitaḥ) - dismissed; स (sa) - he; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; पितुर्वचनकारिणा (pitur-vacanakāriṇā) - one who fulfills (his) father's command; नन्दिग्रामे (nandigrāme) - in Nandigrāma; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - placing at the front; अस्य (asya) - his; पादुके (pāduke) - sandals;]
(Dismissed, he by Rāma, the fulfiller of his father's command, in Nandigrāma made the kingdom, placing his sandals at the front.)
He, having been dismissed by Rāma—the fulfiller of his father's command—established the kingdom at Nandigrāma, installing Rāma's sandals as the symbol of rulership. (03-261-38)
रामस्तु पुनराशङ्क्य पौरजानपदागमम्। प्रविवेश महारण्यं शरभङ्गाश्रमं प्रति ॥०३-२६१-३९॥
rāmas tu punar āśaṅkya paurajānapadāgamam। praviveśa mahāraṇyaṃ śarabhaṅgāśramaṃ prati ॥03-261-39॥
[रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; तु (tu) - but; पुनः (punar) - again; आशङ्क्य (āśaṅkya) - having suspected; पौर (paura) - townspeople; जानपद (jānapada) - country-folk; आगमम् (āgamam) - arrival; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; महारण्यं (mahāraṇyam) - great forest; शरभङ्गाश्रमं (śarabhaṅgāśramam) - hermitage of Śarabhaṅga; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Rama but again having suspected townspeople, country-folk arrival, entered the great forest towards the hermitage of Śarabhaṅga.)

सत्कृत्य शरभङ्गं स दण्डकारण्यमाश्रितः। नदीं गोदावरीं रम्यामाश्रित्य न्यवसत्तदा ॥०३-२६१-४०॥
satkṛtya śarabhaṅgaṃ sa daṇḍakāraṇyam āśritaḥ। nadīṃ godāvarīṃ ramyām āśritya nyavasat tadā॥03-261-40॥
[सत्कृत्य (satkṛtya) - having duly honored; शरभङ्गं (śarabhaṅgam) - Śarabhaṅga; सः (saḥ) - he; दण्डकारण्यम् (daṇḍakāraṇyam) - Daṇḍaka forest; आश्रितः (āśritaḥ) - having resorted; नदीम् (nadīm) - river (accusative); गोदावरीम् (godāvarīm) - Godāvarī; रम्याम् (ramyām) - beautiful; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having taken refuge; न्यवसत् (nyavasat) - he dwelt; तदा (tadā) - then;]

After duly honoring Śarabhaṅga, he took up residence in the Daṇḍaka forest, settling at the beautiful river Godāvarī. (03-261-40)
वसतस्तस्य रामस्य ततः शूर्पणखाकृतम्। खरेणासीन्महद्वैरं जनस्थाननिवासिना ॥०३-२६१-४१॥
vasataḥ tasya rāmasya tataḥ śūrpaṇakhākṛtam। khareṇāsīn mahat vairaṃ janasthāna-nivāsinā ॥03-261-41॥

(Of his dwelling, Rāma's, then Śūrpaṇakhā-act, by Khara there was great enmity by the Janasthāna-dweller.)
While Rāma was dwelling there, then, owing to the act of Śūrpaṇakhā, a great enmity arose by Khara, the dweller of Janasthāna. (03-261-41)
रक्षार्थं तापसानां च राघवो धर्मवत्सलः। चतुर्दश सहस्राणि जघान भुवि रक्षसाम् ॥०३-२६१-४२॥
rakṣārthaṁ tāpasānāṁ ca rāghavo dharmavatsalaḥ। caturdaśa sahasrāṇi jaghāna bhuvi rakṣasām ॥03-261-42॥
[रक्षार्थं (rakṣārtham) - for the purpose of protection; तापसानाम् (tāpasānām) - of ascetics; च (ca) - and; राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - Rāghava; धर्मवत्सलः (dharmavatsalaḥ) - one who is fond of dharma; चतुर्दश (caturdaśa) - fourteen; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; जघान (jaghāna) - (he) slew; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth; रक्षसाम् (rakṣasām) - of rākṣasas (demons);]
(For the purpose of protection of ascetics and Rāghava, fond of dharma, slew fourteen thousand of the rākṣasas on the earth.)
For the protection of the ascetics, Rāghava—devoted to dharma—slew fourteen thousand rākṣasas on earth. (03-261-42)
दूषणं च खरं चैव निहत्य सुमहाबलौ। चक्रे क्षेमं पुनर्धीमान्धर्मारण्यं स राघवः ॥०३-२६१-४३॥
dūṣaṇaṃ ca kharaṃ caiva nihatya sumahābalau। cakre kṣemaṃ punardhīmāndharmāraṇyaṃ sa rāghavaḥ॥03-261-43॥

(Dūṣaṇa and Khara and also, having slain, the greatly mighty ones, made well-being again, the wise one, the forest of righteousness, he, Rāghava.)
He, Rāghava, the wise one, having slain the greatly mighty Dūṣaṇa and Khara, again brought well-being to the forest of righteousness. (03-261-43)
हतेषु तेषु रक्षःसु ततः शूर्पणखा पुनः। ययौ निकृत्तनासोष्ठी लङ्कां भ्रातुर्निवेशनम् ॥०३-२६१-४४॥
hateṣu teṣu rakṣaḥsu tataḥ śūrpaṇakhā punaḥ। yayau nikṛttanāsoṣṭhī laṅkāṃ bhrātur niveśanam ॥03-261-44॥

(When those rākṣasas were slain, then Śūrpaṇakhā again, with her nose and lips cut off, went to Laṅkā, the residence of (her) brother.)

ततो रावणमभ्येत्य राक्षसी दुःखमूर्छिता। पपात पादयोर्भ्रातुः संशुष्करुधिरानना ॥०३-२६१-४५॥
tato rāvaṇam abhyetya rākṣasī duḥkha-mūrchitā। papāta pādayor bhrātuḥ sanśuṣka-rudhirānanā ॥03-261-45॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; रावणम् (rāvaṇam) - to Rāvaṇa; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - the demoness; दुःखमूर्छिता (duḥkha-mūrchitā) - overcome by pain; पपात (papāta) - she fell; पादयोः (pādayoḥ) - at (his) feet; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of (her) brother; संशुष्करुधिरानना (sanśuṣka-rudhirānanā) - with a face (having) dried blood;]
(Then to Rāvaṇa, having approached, the demoness overcome by pain fell at the feet of her brother, with a face (having) dried blood.)
Then the demoness, overcome with pain and her face streaked with dried blood, approached Rāvaṇa and fell at her brother's feet. (03-261-45)
तां तथा विकृतां दृष्ट्वा रावणः क्रोधमूर्छितः। उत्पपातासनात्क्रुद्धो दन्तैर्दन्तानुपस्पृशन् ॥०३-२६१-४६॥
tāṃ tathā vikṛtāṃ dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇaḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ। utpapātāsanātkṛddho dantairdantānupaspṛśan ॥03-261-46॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; तथा (tathā) - thus; विकृतां (vikṛtāṃ) - changed; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; क्रोध-मूर्छितः (krodha-mūrcchitaḥ) - overcome with anger; उत्पपात (utpapāta) - sprang up; आसनात् (āsanāt) - from (his) seat; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; दन्तैः (dantaiḥ) - with (his) teeth; दन्तान् (dantān) - teeth; उपस्पृशन् (upaspṛśan) - touching;]
(Her thus changed having seen, Rāvaṇa overcome with anger sprang up from (his) seat, angry, with (his) teeth touching (his) teeth.)
Seeing her thus changed, Rāvaṇa, overcome with anger, sprang up from his seat in rage, grinding his teeth together. (03-261-46)
स्वानमात्यान्विसृज्याथ विविक्ते तामुवाच सः। केनास्येवं कृता भद्रे मामचिन्त्यावमन्य च ॥०३-२६१-४७॥
svānamātyānvisṛjyātha vivikte tāmuvāca saḥ। kenāsyevaṃ kṛtā bhadre māmacintyāvamanya ca॥03-261-47॥
[स्वान् अमात्यान् (svān amātyān) - his own ministers; विसृज्य (visṛjya) - having dismissed; अथ (atha) - then; विविक्ते (vivikte) - in a secluded place; ताम् (tām) - her; उवाच (uvāca) - he said; सः (saḥ) - he; केन (kena) - by whom; अस्य (asya) - to you; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कृता (kṛtā) - done; भद्रे (bhadre) - O gentle one; माम् (mām) - me; अचिन्त्य (acintya) - not thinking; अवमन्य (avamanya) - disregarding; च (ca) - and;]
(His own ministers having dismissed, then in a secluded place her he said, he; by whom to you thus done, O gentle one, me not thinking disregarding and.)
Having dismissed his own ministers, then, in a secluded place, he said to her: "By whom was this done to you, O gentle one—disregarding and not considering me?" (03-261-47)
कः शूलं तीक्ष्णमासाद्य सर्वगात्रैर्निषेवते। कः शिरस्यग्निमादाय विश्वस्तः स्वपते सुखम् ॥०३-२६१-४८॥
kaḥ śūlaṁ tīkṣṇam āsādya sarva-gātraiḥ niṣevate। kaḥ śirasi agnim ādāya viśvastaḥ svapate sukham॥03-261-48॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; शूलं (śūlam) - a spear; तीक्ष्णम् (tīkṣṇam) - sharp; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; सर्वगात्रैः (sarva-gātraiḥ) - with all limbs; निषेवते (niṣevate) - serves; कः (kaḥ) - who; शिरसि (śirasi) - on the head; अग्निम् (agnim) - fire; आदाय (ādāya) - having placed; विश्वस्तः (viśvastaḥ) - confident; स्वपते (svapate) - sleeps; सुखम् (sukham) - happily;]
(Who having approached a sharp spear with all limbs serves? Who having placed fire on (his) head confident sleeps happily?)
Who serves a sharp spear with all his limbs? Who, having placed fire on his head, confidently sleeps happily? (03-261-48)
आशीविषं घोरतरं पादेन स्पृशतीह कः। सिंहं केसरिणं कश्च दंष्ट्रासु स्पृश्य तिष्ठति ॥०३-२६१-४९॥
āśīviṣaṁ ghorataraṁ pādena spṛśatīha kaḥ। siṁhaṁ kesariṇaṁ kaśca daṁṣṭrāsu spṛśya tiṣṭhati ॥03-261-49॥
[आशीविषम् (āśīviṣam) - venomous serpent; घोरतरम् (ghorataraṁ) - more terrible; पादेन (pādena) - with (the) foot; स्पृशति (spṛśati) - touches; इह (iha) - here; कः (kaḥ) - who; सिंहम् (siṁham) - lion; केसरिणम् (kesariṇam) - with mane; कः (kaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; दंष्ट्रासु (daṁṣṭrāsu) - in the jaws; स्पृश्य (spṛśya) - having touched; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains;]
(Who here touches the venomous, more terrible serpent with (the) foot? And who, having touched the lion with mane in the jaws, remains?)
Who here touches a more terrible venomous serpent with their foot? And who stands having touched the jaws of a maned lion? (03-261-49)
इत्येवं ब्रुवतस्तस्य स्रोतोभ्यस्तेजसोऽर्चिषः। निश्चेरुर्दह्यतो रात्रौ वृक्षस्येव स्वरन्ध्रतः ॥०३-२६१-५०॥
ityevaṃ bruvatas tasya srotobhyaḥ tejaso'rciṣaḥ। niścerur dahyato rātrau vṛkṣasya iva svarandhrataḥ॥03-261-50॥
[इति एवम् (iti evam) - thus; in this manner; ब्रुवतः (bruvataḥ) - speaking; uttering; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; स्रोतोभ्यः (srotobhyaḥ) - from the streams (eyes, etc.); from the channels; तेजसः (tejasah) - of the energy; of the light; अर्चिषः (arciṣaḥ) - flames; rays; निश्-चेरुः (niś-ceruḥ) - emerged; went out; दह्यतः (dahyataḥ) - of the one burning; as he was burning; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; वृक्षस्य (vṛkṣasya) - of a tree; इव (iva) - like; as; स्व-रन्ध्रतः (sva-randhrataḥ) - from its own openings; from its own holes;]
(Thus indeed as he was speaking, from his streams the rays of energy flames emerged, as he was burning at night, like from the openings of a tree.)
Thus, as he spoke, from his channels (such as his eyes) rays of energy like flames emerged as he burned at night, just as flames issue from the holes of a tree. (03-261-50)
तस्य तत्सर्वमाचख्यौ भगिनी रामविक्रमम्। खरदूषणसंयुक्तं राक्षसानां पराभवम् ॥०३-२६१-५१॥
tasya tatsarvamācakhyau bhaginī rāma-vikramam। khara-dūṣaṇa-saṃyuktaṃ rākṣasānāṃ parābhavam ॥03-261-51॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; तत्सर्वम् (tat sarvam) - that all; आचख्यौ (ācakhyau) - told; भगिनी (bhaginī) - sister; रामविक्रमम् (rāma-vikramam) - Rāma's valor; खरदूषणसंयुक्तं (khara-dūṣaṇa-saṃyuktam) - joined with Khara and Dūṣaṇa; राक्षसानां (rākṣasānām) - of the rākṣasas (demons); पराभवम् (parābhavam) - defeat;]
(His sister told all that, Rāma's valor, joined with Khara and Dūṣaṇa, the defeat of the rākṣasas.)
His sister told him everything—of Rāma's valor, of the defeat of the rākṣasas together with Khara and Dūṣaṇa. (03-261-51)
स निश्चित्य ततः कृत्यं स्वसारमुपसान्त्व्य च। ऊर्ध्वमाचक्रमे राजा विधाय नगरे विधिम् ॥०३-२६१-५२॥
sa niścitya tataḥ kṛtyaṃ svasāram-upasāntvya ca. ūrdhvam-ācakrame rājā vidhāya nagare vidhim ॥03-261-52॥
[स (sa) - he; निश्चित्य (niścitya) - having decided; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; कृत्यं (kṛtyam) - what was to be done; duty; स्वसारम् (svasāram) - his sister; उपसान्त्व्य (upasāntvya) - having consoled; च (ca) - and; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; forward; आचक्रमे (ācakrame) - he proceeded; राजा (rājā) - the king; विधाय (vidhāya) - having performed; having arranged; नगरे (nagare) - in the city; विधिम् (vidhim) - the rite; ordinance;]
(He, having decided then what was to be done, and having consoled his sister, the king proceeded forward, having arranged the rite in the city.)
Having made his decision, and after consoling his sister, the king performed the prescribed rites in the city and then proceeded onward. (03-261-52)
त्रिकूटं समतिक्रम्य कालपर्वतमेव च। ददर्श मकरावासं गम्भीरोदं महोदधिम् ॥०३-२६१-५३॥
trikūṭaṃ samatikramya kālaparvatam eva ca। dadarśa makarāvāsaṃ gambhīrodaṃ mahodadhim ॥03-261-53॥
[त्रिकूटं (trikūṭam) - the Trikūṭa mountain; सतिक्रम्य (samatikramya) - having crossed over; कालपर्वतम् (kālaparvatam) - the Kāla mountain; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; मकरावासम् (makarāvāsam) - the abode of makara (aquatic creatures); गम्भीरॊदम् (gambhīrodam) - with deep water; महोदधिम् (mahodadhim) - the great ocean;]
(Having crossed the Trikūṭa mountain and indeed the Kāla mountain, he saw the abode of makaras, the great ocean with deep water.)
After crossing the Trikūṭa mountain and also the Kāla mountain, he beheld the dwelling of makaras, the vast ocean with its deep waters. (03-261-53)
तमतीत्याथ गोकर्णमभ्यगच्छद्दशाननः। दयितं स्थानमव्यग्रं शूलपाणेर्महात्मनः ॥०३-२६१-५४॥
tam atītya ātha gokarṇam abhyagacchat daśānanaḥ। dayitaṃ sthānam avyagraṃ śūlapāṇeḥ mahātmanaḥ॥03-261-54॥
[तम् (tam) - him; (i.e., referring to the previous subject; masculine accusative singular); अतीत्य (atītya) - having crossed; having passed over; आथ (ātha) - then; thereafter; गोकर्णम् (gokarṇam) - Gokarna; (a holy place; neuter accusative singular); अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; went toward; दशाननः (daśānanaḥ) - Daśānana; (ten-headed one; i.e., Rāvaṇa; masculine nominative singular); दयितं (dayitam) - beloved; dear; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; अव्यग्रम् (avyagram) - undisturbed; calm; शूलपाणेः (śūlapāṇeḥ) - of Śūlapāṇi; (trident-holder; i.e., Śiva; masculine genitive singular); महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; (genitive singular);]
(Having crossed him, then Daśānana approached Gokarna, the beloved, undisturbed place of the great-souled trident-holder.)
Then, having passed by him, Daśānana (Rāvaṇa) went to Gokarna, the dear and tranquil place of the great-souled wielder of the trident (Śiva). (03-261-54)
तत्राभ्यगच्छन्मारीचं पूर्वामात्यं दशाननः। पुरा रामभयादेव तापस्यं समुपाश्रितम् ॥०३-२६१-५५॥
tatrābhyagacchan mārīcaṃ pūrvāmātyaṃ daśānanaḥ. purā rāma-bhayād eva tāpasyaṃ samupāśritam ॥03-261-55॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अभ्यगच्छन् (abhyagacchan) - approached; मारीचम् (mārīcam) - Mārīca (a proper noun, object); पूर्वामात्यम् (pūrvāmātyam) - former minister; दशाननः (daśānanaḥ) - ten-headed one (Rāvaṇa, subject); पुरा (purā) - formerly; रामभयात् (rāma-bhayāt) - from fear of Rāma; एव (eva) - indeed; तापस्यं (tāpasyaṃ) - ascetic state (asceticism/way of an ascetic); समुपाश्रितम् (samupāśritam) - had resorted to;]
(There the ten-headed one (Rāvaṇa) approached Mārīca, the former minister, who had formerly, indeed from fear of Rāma, resorted to an ascetic state.)
There, Rāvaṇa, the ten-headed one, approached Mārīca, his former minister, who had taken to asceticism out of fear of Rāma in former times. (03-261-55)
