मारीचस्त्वथ सम्भ्रान्तो दृष्ट्वा रावणमागतम्। पूजयामास सत्कारैः फलमूलादिभिस्तथा ॥०३-२६२-१॥
mārīcastvatha sambhrānto dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇamāgatam। pūjayāmāsa satkāraiḥ phalamūlādibhistathā ॥03-262-1॥
[मारीचः (mārīcaḥ) - Mārīca; (proper name; demon) तु (tu) - but; अथ (atha) - then; सम्भ्रान्तः (sambhrāntaḥ) - confused; startled; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; रावणम् (rāvaṇam) - Rāvaṇa; (proper name; demon king; accusative singular) आगतं (āgatam) - arrived; (accusative singular masculine, agreeing with Rāvaṇa) पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - honored; worshipped; सत्कारैः (satkāraiḥ) - with hospitalities; with courteous offerings; फलमूलादिभिः (phalamūlādibhiḥ) - with fruits, roots, and the like; तथा (tathā) - in like manner; accordingly;]
(Mārīca but then, confused, having seen Rāvaṇa arrived, honored with hospitalities with fruits, roots, and the like, in like manner.)
But then, Mārīca, startled upon seeing Rāvaṇa arrive, received him with proper courtesies and offered him fruits, roots, and similar items. (03-262-1)
विश्रान्तं चैनमासीनमन्वासीनः स राक्षसः। उवाच प्रश्रितं वाक्यं वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यकोविदम् ॥०३-२६२-२॥
viśrāntaṃ ca enam āsīnam anvāsīnaḥ sa rākṣasaḥ। uvāca praśritaṃ vākyaṃ vākyajñaḥ vākyakovidam ॥03-262-2॥
[विश्रान्तम् (viśrāntam) - rested; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; अन्वासीनः (anvāsīnaḥ) - having seated (himself) near (him); सः (saḥ) - he; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the rākṣasa (demon); उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; प्रश्रितम् (praśritam) - respectful; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; वाक्यज्ञः (vākyajñaḥ) - knower of speech; वाक्यकोविदम् (vākyakovidam) - skilled in words;]
(Having seen him rested and seated, having seated himself near, the rākṣasa spoke respectful speech to the knower and expert in words.)
The rākṣasa, after he had seen him rested and seated and had seated himself close by, addressed respectful words to the one skilled and expert in speech. (03-262-2)
न ते प्रकृतिमान्वर्णः कच्चित्क्षेमं पुरे तव। कच्चित्प्रकृतयः सर्वा भजन्ते त्वां यथा पुरा ॥०३-२६२-३॥
na te prakṛtim ānvarṇaḥ kaccit kṣemaṃ pure tava। kaccit prakṛtayaḥ sarvā bhajante tvāṃ yathā purā ॥03-262-3॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; प्रकृतिम् (prakṛtim) - nature (characteristic); आन्वर्णः (ānvarṇaḥ) - minister; counselor; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; (interrogative particle) क्षेमम् (kṣemam) - well-being; safety; पुरे (pure) - in the city; तव (tava) - your; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; (interrogative particle) प्रकृतयः (prakṛtayaḥ) - subjects; citizens; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; भजन्ते (bhajante) - serve; attend; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; यथा (yathā) - as; like; पुरा (purā) - formerly; earlier;]
(Not your nature (does) the minister, whether (there is) well-being in your city. Whether all the subjects serve you as formerly.)
Is your minister not true to his nature? Is everything well in your city? Do all the subjects serve you as before? (03-262-3)
किमिहागमने चापि कार्यं ते राक्षसेश्वर। कृतमित्येव तद्विद्धि यद्यपि स्यात्सुदुष्करम् ॥०३-२६२-४॥
kim ihāgamane cāpi kāryaṃ te rākṣaseśvara। kṛtam ity eva tad viddhi yady api syāt suduṣkaram ॥03-262-4॥
[किम् (kim) - what; इह (iha) - here; आगमने (āgamane) - in arrival; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कार्यं (kāryam) - task; ते (te) - for you; राक्षसेश्वर (rākṣaseśvara) - O lord of the rākṣasas; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - only; तत् (tat) - that; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; यद्यपि (yady api) - although; स्यात् (syāt) - it might be; सुदुष्करम् (suduṣkaram) - very difficult;]
(What here in coming and also the task for you, O lord of the rākṣasas, thus only know that as done, although it might be very difficult.)
O lord of the rākṣasas, whatever task there is here for your coming, know that it is already done, even if it might be very difficult. (03-262-4)
शशंस रावणस्तस्मै तत्सर्वं रामचेष्टितम्। मारीचस्त्वब्रवीच्छ्रुत्वा समासेनैव रावणम् ॥०३-२६२-५॥
śaśaṁsa rāvaṇas tasmai tat sarvaṁ rāma-ceṣṭitam. mārīcas tv abravīc chrutvā samāsenaiva rāvaṇam ॥03-262-5॥
[शशंस (śaśaṁsa) - he described; he informed; रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; (the demon king); तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; राम-चेष्टितम् (rāma-ceṣṭitam) - acts of Rāma; मारीचः (mārīcaḥ) - Mārīca; (the demon sage) तु (tu) - but; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; समासेन एव (samāsena eva) - in summary only; रावणम् (rāvaṇam) - to Rāvaṇa;]
(Rāvaṇa described to him all those acts of Rāma. But Mārīca, having heard (it), spoke to Rāvaṇa only in summary.)
Rāvaṇa told him everything about Rāma’s actions. Mārīca, after hearing it, spoke to Rāvaṇa only briefly. (03-262-5)
अलं ते राममासाद्य वीर्यज्ञो ह्यस्मि तस्य वै। बाणवेगं हि कस्तस्य शक्तः सोढुं महात्मनः ॥०३-२६२-६॥
alaṃ te rāmam-āsādya vīryajño hy-asmi tasya vai। bāṇavegaṃ hi kas tasya śaktaḥ soḍhuṃ mahātmanaḥ ॥03-262-6॥
[अलं (alaṃ) - enough; ते (te) - to you; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma (the proper noun, accusative); आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; having attained; वीर्यज्ञः (vīryajñaḥ) - knower of valor; knower of strength; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; वै (vai) - truly; indeed; बाणवेगं (bāṇavegam) - the force of arrows; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; कः (kaḥ) - who; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; capable; सोढुं (soḍhum) - to bear; to endure; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one;]
(Enough to you, having encountered Rāma; I am indeed a knower of his strength. Indeed, who is truly able to bear the force of the arrows of that great-souled one?)
Enough, having approached Rāma; I truly know his strength. For indeed, who can withstand the force of that great-souled one's arrows? (03-262-6)
प्रव्रज्यायां हि मे हेतुः स एव पुरुषर्षभः। विनाशमुखमेतत्ते केनाख्यातं दुरात्मना ॥०३-२६२-७॥
pravrajyāyāṁ hi me hetuḥ sa eva puruṣarṣabhaḥ। vināśamukhametat te kenākhyātaṁ durātmanā॥03-262-7॥
[प्रव्रज्यायाम् (pravrajyāyām) - in renunciation; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; हेतुः (hetuḥ) - cause; सः (saḥ) - he; एव (eva) - indeed; पुरुषर्षभः (puruṣarṣabhaḥ) - bull among men; विनाशमुखम् (vināśamukham) - mouth of destruction; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; केन (kena) - by whom; आख्या्तम् (ākhyātam) - was declared; दुरात्मना (durātmanā) - by the evil-minded;]
(In renunciation indeed my cause, he alone, bull among men. The mouth of destruction, this, to you, by whom was declared, by the evil-minded.)
Indeed, my reason for renunciation is he alone, O bull among men. By whom was this mouth of destruction declared to you, by the evil-minded? (03-262-7)
तमुवाचाथ सक्रोधो रावणः परिभर्त्सयन्। अकुर्वतोऽस्मद्वचनं स्यान्मृत्युरपि ते ध्रुवम् ॥०३-२६२-८॥
tam uvācātha sakrodho rāvaṇaḥ paribhartsayan। akurvato'smad-vacanaṃ syān mṛtyur api te dhruvam॥03-262-8॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; अथ (atha) - then; सक्रोधः (sakrodhaḥ) - angrily; रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; परिभर्त्सयन् (paribhartsayan) - rebuking; अकुर्वतः (akurvataḥ) - of not doing; अस्मद्-वचनम् (asmad-vacanam) - our command; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; अपि (api) - even; ते (te) - for you; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly;]
(To him spoke then angrily Rāvaṇa, rebuking: "Of not doing our command, would be death even for you certainly.")
Then Rāvaṇa, rebuking him angrily, said: "If you do not obey my command, death is certainly inevitable for you." (03-262-8)
मारीचश्चिन्तयामास विशिष्टान्मरणं वरम्। अवश्यं मरणे प्राप्ते करिष्याम्यस्य यन्मतम् ॥०३-२६२-९॥
mārīcaś cintayāmāsa viśiṣṭān maraṇaṃ varam। avaśyaṃ maraṇe prāpte kariṣyāmy asya yan matam ॥03-262-9॥
[मारीचः (mārīcaḥ) - Mārīca; (proper noun, name of the person); चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - thought; considered; pondered; विशिष्टात् (viśiṣṭāt) - than something superior; than the preferable; than the better option; मरणम् (maraṇam) - death; वरम् (varam) - preferable; better; अवश्यम् (avaśyam) - certainly; inevitably; मरणे (maraṇe) - in death; upon death; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - having arrived; when arrived; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; अस्य (asya) - his; of him; यत् (yat) - which; what; मतम् (matam) - desire; intention; wish;]
(Mārīca thought, than the superior, death is preferable. Certainly, when death has arrived, I will do what is his wish.)
Mārīca thought, 'Death is better than the superior option. Therefore, since death is certain, I will do whatever is his wish.' (03-262-9)
ततस्तं प्रत्युवाचाथ मारीचो राक्षसेश्वरम्। किं ते साह्यं मया कार्यं करिष्याम्यवशोऽपि तत् ॥०३-२६२-१०॥
tatas taṃ pratyuvācātha mārīco rākṣaseśvaram। kiṃ te sāhyaṃ mayā kāryaṃ kariṣyāmy avaśo'pi tat॥03-262-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम् (tam) - him; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; अथ (atha) - then; मारीचः (mārīcaḥ) - Mārīca; राक्षसेश्वरम् (rākṣaseśvaram) - the lord of the rākṣasas; किम् (kim) - what; ते (te) - to you; साह्यम् (sāhyam) - help; मया (mayā) - by me; कार्यम् (kāryam) - to be done; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; अवशः अपि (avaśaḥ api) - even though powerless; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Then him replied then Mārīca to the lord of the rākṣasas. What to you help by me to be done I shall do, even though powerless, that.)
Then Mārīca replied to the lord of the rākṣasas: "Whatever help you desire from me, I shall do that, even though I am powerless." (03-262-10)
तमब्रवीद्दशग्रीवो गच्छ सीतां प्रलोभय। रत्नशृङ्गो मृगो भूत्वा रत्नचित्रतनूरुहः ॥०३-२६२-११॥
tam abravīd daśagrīvaḥ gaccha sītāṃ pralobhaya। ratnaśṛṅgo mṛgo bhūtvā ratnacitratanūruhaḥ ॥03-262-11॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; दशग्रीवः (daśagrīvaḥ) - the ten-necked (Rāvaṇa); गच्छ (gaccha) - go; सीताम् (sītām) - Sītā; प्रलोभय (pralobhaya) - tempt; रत्नशृङ्गः (ratnaśṛṅgaḥ) - having jeweled horns; मृगः (mṛgaḥ) - deer; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; रत्नचित्रतनूरुहः (ratnacitratanūruhaḥ) - with body and hair adorned with various jewels;]
(To him the ten-necked said: Go, tempt Sītā. Having become a deer with jeweled horns, and with body and hair adorned with jewels.)
The ten-headed Rāvaṇa said to him, "Go and tempt Sītā by assuming the form of a deer with jeweled horns and a body covered in jeweled markings and fur." (03-262-11)
ध्रुवं सीता समालक्ष्य त्वां रामं चोदयिष्यति। अपक्रान्ते च काकुत्स्थे सीता वश्या भविष्यति ॥०३-२६२-१२॥
dhruvaṃ sītā samālakṣya tvāṃ rāmaṃ codayiṣyati। apakrānte ca kākutsthe sītā vaśyā bhaviṣyati॥03-262-12॥
[ध्रुवं (dhruvam) - certainly; सीता (sītā) - Sītā; समालक्ष्य (samālakṣya) - having closely observed; त्वां (tvām) - you; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rāma; चोदयिष्यति (codayiṣyati) - will urge; अपक्रान्ते (apakrānte) - (when) having departed; च (ca) - and; काकुत्स्थे (kākutsthe) - Kākutstha (Rāma); सीता (sītā) - Sītā; वश्या (vaśyā) - under control; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become;]
(Certainly, having closely observed you, Sītā will urge Rāma. And when Kākutstha has departed, Sītā will become under control.)
Certainly, Sītā will urge Rāma after carefully observing you. And when Rāma (Kākutstha) has left, Sītā will become submissive. (03-262-12)
तामादायापनेष्यामि ततः स न भविष्यति। भार्यावियोगाद्दुर्बुद्धिरेतत्साह्यं कुरुष्व मे ॥०३-२६२-१३॥
tām ādāyāpaneṣyāmi tataḥ sa na bhaviṣyati। bhāryā-viyogād durbuddhiḥ etat sāhyaṃ kuruṣva me ॥03-262-13॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; अपनेष्यामि (apaneṣyāmi) - I will take away; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; स (sa) - he; न (na) - not; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; भार्यावियोगात् (bhāryā-viyogāt) - from wife-separation; दुर्बुद्धिः (durbuddhiḥ) - the evil-minded (person); एतत् (etat) - this; साह्यं (sāhyaṃ) - assistance; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; मे (me) - for me;]
(Her having taken, I will take away. Thereafter, he will not be. From wife-separation, the evil-minded—this assistance do for me.)
Taking her away, I will take her. After that, he will not exist. On account of wife-separation, that evil-minded one—give this help for me. (03-262-13)
इत्येवमुक्तो मारीचः कृत्वोदकमथात्मनः। रावणं पुरतो यान्तमन्वगच्छत्सुदुःखितः ॥०३-२६२-१४॥
ityevam-ukto mārīcaḥ kṛtvodakam athātmanāḥ। rāvaṇaṁ purato yāntam anvagacchat suduḥkhitaḥ ॥03-262-14॥
[इति एवम् उक्तः (iti evam uktaḥ) - thus; in this manner; addressed; मारीचः (mārīcaḥ) - Mārīca (proper noun); कृत्वा उदकम् अथ आत्मनः (kṛtvā udakam atha ātmanaḥ) - having performed water (rite) then for himself; रावणम् पुरतः यान्तम् (rāvaṇam purataḥ yāntam) - Rāvaṇa (proper noun); in front; going; अन्वगच्छत् सुदुःखितः (anv-agacchat su-duḥkhitaḥ) - followed (he); greatly distressed;]
(Thus addressed Mārīca, having performed the water rite then for himself, Rāvaṇa in front going, followed (he) greatly distressed.)
Having been thus addressed, Mārīca—having then performed the water-rite for himself—greatly distressed, followed Rāvaṇa who was going ahead. (03-262-14)
ततस्तस्याश्रमं गत्वा रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः। चक्रतुस्तत्तथा सर्वमुभौ यत्पूर्वमन्त्रितम् ॥०३-२६२-१५॥
tatas tasyāśramaṃ gatvā rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ। cakratus tattathā sarvam ubhau yat pūrvamantritam॥03-262-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्य (tasya) - his; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; अक्लिष्टकर्मणः (akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ) - of one whose actions are effortless; चक्रतुः (cakratuḥ) - (they) did; तत्तथा (tattathā) - that (in that manner); सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; उभौ (ubhau) - both; यत् (yat) - which; पूर्वमन्त्रितम् (pūrvamantritam) - previously agreed upon;]
(Then, having gone to his hermitage of Rāma, of the one whose actions are effortless, both did all that which was previously agreed upon, in that manner.)
Then, both of them went to the hermitage of Rāma, whose actions are effortless, and carried out everything just as had been previously agreed upon. (03-262-15)
रावणस्तु यतिर्भूत्वा मुण्डः कुण्डी त्रिदण्डधृक्। मृगश्च भूत्वा मारीचस्तं देशमुपजग्मतुः ॥०३-२६२-१६॥
rāvaṇas tu yatir bhūtvā muṇḍaḥ kuṇḍī tridaṇḍa-dhṛk। mṛgaś ca bhūtvā mārīcas taṃ deśam upajagmatūḥ ॥03-262-16॥
[रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; तु (tu) - but; यतिः (yatiḥ) - ascetic; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; मुण्डः (muṇḍaḥ) - shaven-headed; कुण्डी (kuṇḍī) - carrying a water-pot; त्रिदण्डधृक् (tridaṇḍa-dhṛk) - bearing the triple staff; मृगः (mṛgaḥ) - deer; च (ca) - and; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; मारीचः (mārīcaḥ) - Mārīca; तम् (tam) - that; देशम् (deśam) - place; उपजग्मतुः (upajagmatūḥ) - they both approached;]
(Rāvaṇa but ascetic having become, shaven-headed, carrying a water-pot, bearing the triple staff. Deer also having become, Mārīca that place they both approached.)
But Rāvaṇa, having become an ascetic—shaven-headed, carrying a water-pot, and holding the triple staff—and Mārīca, having become a deer, both approached that place. (03-262-16)
दर्शयामास वैदेहीं मारीचो मृगरूपधृक्। चोदयामास तस्यार्थे सा रामं विधिचोदिता ॥०३-२६२-१७॥
darśayāmāsa vaidehīṃ mārīco mṛgarūpadhṛk। codayāmāsa tasyārthe sā rāmaṃ vidhicoditā॥03-262-17॥
[दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - he showed; he caused to be seen; वैदेहीं (vaidehīṃ) - Sītā (the daughter of Videha); मारीचः (mārīcaḥ) - Mārīca; मृगरूपधृक् (mṛgarūpadhṛk) - assuming a deer form; चोदयामास (codayāmāsa) - she urged; तस्य अर्थे (tasya arthe) - for its sake; सा (sā) - she; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma; विधिचोदिता (vidhicoditā) - impelled by fate;]
(He showed Sītā, Mārīca assuming a deer form. She urged Rāma for its sake, impelled by fate.)
Mārīca, taking the form of a deer, showed himself to Sītā. Urged by fate, she pressed Rāma to seek it for her. (03-262-17)
रामस्तस्याः प्रियं कुर्वन्धनुरादाय सत्वरः। रक्षार्थे लक्ष्मणं न्यस्य प्रययौ मृगलिप्सया ॥०३-२६२-१८॥
rāmas tasyāḥ priyaṃ kurvan dhanur ādāya satvaraḥ। rakṣārthe lakṣmaṇaṃ nyasya prayayau mṛga-lipsayā ॥03-262-18॥

Rāma, swiftly doing what was pleasing to her, took up his bow, left Lakṣmaṇa behind for her protection, and set off with the desire to capture the deer. (03-262-18)
स धन्वी बद्धतूणीरः खड्गगोधाङ्गुलित्रवान्। अन्वधावन्मृगं रामो रुद्रस्तारामृगं यथा ॥०३-२६२-१९॥
sa dhanvī baddhatūṇīraḥ khaḍgagodhāṅgulitravān| anvadhāvan mṛgaṃ rāmo rudras tārāmṛgaṃ yathā ॥03-262-19॥
[स (sa) - he; धन्वी (dhanvī) - armed with a bow; बद्धतूणीरः (baddhatūṇīraḥ) - having a bound quiver; खड्गगोधाङ्गुलित्रवान् (khaḍgagodhāṅgulitravān) - wearing a sword, arm-guard, and finger-protector; अन्वधावन् (anvadhāvan) - chased after; मृगं (mṛgaṃ) - the deer; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; तारा (tārā) - Tārā (name of the deer); मृगं (mṛgaṃ) - the deer; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(He, armed with a bow, having a bound quiver, wearing a sword, arm-guard and finger-protector, chased after the deer—Rāma—as Rudra [chased] Tārā the deer.)
He, carrying bow, having his quiver fastened, and equipped with sword, arm-guard, and finger-protector, Rāma chased the deer just as Rudra once chased Tārā the deer. (03-262-19)
सोऽन्तर्हितः पुनस्तस्य दर्शनं राक्षसो व्रजन्। चकर्ष महदध्वानं रामस्तं बुबुधे ततः ॥०३-२६२-२०॥
so'ntarhitaḥ punas tasya darśanaṃ rākṣaso vrajan। cakarṣa mahad adhvānaṃ rāmas taṃ bubudhe tataḥ॥03-262-20॥

(He being invisible again the demon going for his sight traversed a great distance; Rama then perceived him.)
He, having become invisible, the demon again going to remain in his sight traversed a great distance; then Rama perceived him. (03-262-20)
निशाचरं विदित्वा तं राघवः प्रतिभानवान्। अमोघं शरमादाय जघान मृगरूपिणम् ॥०३-२६२-२१॥
niśācaraṃ viditvā taṃ rāghavaḥ pratibhānavān। amoghaṃ śaram ādāya jaghāna mṛgarūpiṇam॥03-262-21॥
[निशाचरं (niśācaram) - night-roamer (demon); विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; तं (taṃ) - him; राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - Raghava (Rama); प्रतिभानवान् (pratibhānavān) - possessing intelligence; अमोघं (amogham) - unfailing; शरम् (śaram) - arrow; आदाय (ādāya) - taking; जघान (jaghāna) - struck (killed); मृगरूपिणम् (mṛgarūpiṇam) - one assuming the form of a deer;]
(Having known him (to be) a night-roamer, the intelligent Raghava, taking an unfailing arrow, struck (killed) the one assuming the form of a deer.)
Raghava, knowing him to be a demon in the guise of a deer, and being intelligent, took up an unfailing arrow and killed him. (03-262-21)
स रामबाणाभिहतः कृत्वा रामस्वरं तदा। हा सीते लक्ष्मणेत्येवं चुक्रोशार्तस्वरेण ह ॥०३-२६२-२२॥
sa rāma-bāṇa-abhihataḥ kṛtvā rāma-svaraṃ tadā। hā site lakṣmaṇeti evaṃ cukrośa ārta-svareṇa ha ॥03-262-22॥
[स (sa) - he; रामबाणाभिहतः (rāma-bāṇa-abhihataḥ) - struck by Rāma's arrow; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having adopted; रामस्वरं (rāma-svaram) - Rāma's voice; तदा (tadā) - then; हा (hā) - alas; सीते (site) - O Sītā; लक्ष्मण (lakṣmaṇa) - O Lakṣmaṇa; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - thus; चुक्रोश (cukrośa) - cried out; आर्तस्वरेण (ārta-svareṇa) - with distressed voice; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(He, struck by Rāma's arrow, having adopted Rāma's voice then, 'Alas, O Sītā, O Lakṣmaṇa,' thus cried out with a distressed voice indeed.)
Struck by Rāma's arrow, he then imitated Rāma's voice and cried out in distress, 'Alas, O Sītā, O Lakṣmaṇa!' (03-262-22)
शुश्राव तस्य वैदेही ततस्तां करुणां गिरम्। सा प्राद्रवद्यतः शब्दस्तामुवाचाथ लक्ष्मणः ॥०३-२६२-२३॥
śuśrāva tasya vaidehī tatastāṁ karuṇāṁ giram। sā prādravadyataḥ śabda-stāmuvācātha lakṣmaṇaḥ ॥03-262-23॥
[शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - (she) heard; तस्य (tasya) - of him; वैदेही (vaidehī) - Vaidehi (Sita); ततः (tataḥ) - then; ताम् (tām) - that (her); करुणाम् (karuṇām) - pitiable; compassionate; गिरम् (giram) - speech; voice; सा (sā) - she; प्राद्रवत् (prādravat) - ran forth; यतः (yataḥ) - from where; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; ताम् (tām) - her; उवाच (uvāca) - said; अथ (atha) - then; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakshmana;]
(Vaidehi heard his, then, that pitiable voice. She ran forth from where the sound (came), her then Lakshmana spoke.)
Vaidehi heard his pitiable voice, and then she ran toward where the sound came from; then Lakshmana spoke to her. (03-262-23)
अलं ते शङ्कया भीरु को रामं विषहिष्यति। मुहूर्ताद्द्रक्ष्यसे राममागतं तं शुचिस्मिते ॥०३-२६२-२४॥
alaṃ te śaṅkayā bhīru ko rāmaṃ viṣahiṣyati। muhūrtād drakṣyase rāmam āgataṃ taṃ śucismite॥03-262-24॥
[अलं (alaṃ) - enough; ते (te) - for you; शङ्कया (śaṅkayā) - by doubt; भीरु (bhīru) - fearful one; कः (kaḥ) - who; रामम् (rāmam) - Rama; विषहिष्यति (viṣahiṣyati) - will overcome; मुहूर्तात् (muhūrtāt) - within a moment; द्रक्ष्यसे (drakṣyase) - you will see; रामम् (rāmam) - Rama; आगतम् (āgatam) - come; तम् (tam) - him; शुचिस्मिते (śucismite) - O pure-smiling one;]
(Enough for you with doubt, O fearful one; who will overcome Rama? Within a moment you will see Rama, him come, O pure-smiling one.)
Stop worrying, O timid one; who can overcome Rama? In a moment, O pure-smiling one, you will see Rama himself coming. (03-262-24)
इत्युक्त्वा सा प्ररुदती पर्यशङ्कत देवरम्। हता वै स्त्रीस्वभावेन शुद्धचारित्रभूषणम् ॥०३-२६२-२५॥
ity uktvā sā prarudatī paryaśaṅkata devaram। hatā vai strī-svabhāvena śuddha-cāritra-bhūṣaṇam॥03-262-25॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सा (sā) - she; प्ररुदती (prarudatī) - weeping; पर्यशङ्कत (paryaśaṅkata) - suspected all around; देवरम् (devaram) - the husband's younger brother; हता (hatā) - destroyed; वै (vai) - indeed; स्त्रीस्वभावेन (strī-svabhāvena) - by womanly nature; शुद्धचारित्रभूषणम् (śuddha-cāritra-bhūṣaṇam) - one whose ornament is pure character;]
(Thus having spoken, she, weeping, suspected her husband's younger brother on all sides. Destroyed indeed by womanly nature, whose ornament was pure character.)
Having thus spoken, she wept and was filled with suspicion toward her husband's younger brother. Though her ornament was pure character, she was undone by the nature of woman. (03-262-25)
सा तं परुषमारब्धा वक्तुं साध्वी पतिव्रता। नैष कालो भवेन्मूढ यं त्वं प्रार्थयसे हृदा ॥०३-२६२-२६॥
sā taṃ paruṣam ārabdhā vaktum sādhvī pativratā। naiṣa kālo bhaven mūḍha yaṃ tvaṃ prārthayase hṛdā॥03-262-26॥
[सा (sā) - she; तं (taṃ) - him; परुषम् (paruṣam) - harsh (speech); आरब्धा (ārabdhā) - about to begin; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; साध्वी (sādhvī) - virtuous woman; पतिव्रता (pativratā) - devoted to her husband; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; मूढ (mūḍha) - deluded; यं (yaṃ) - whom; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रार्थयसे (prārthayase) - you seek; हृदा (hṛdā) - with (your) heart;]
(She, about to begin to speak harsh (words) to him, the virtuous woman devoted to her husband, (said): "This is not the time, O deluded one, whom you seek with your heart." (03-262-26))
She, the virtuous and devoted wife, was about to speak harsh words to him, but said, "This is not the time, O deluded one, for whom you long in your heart." (03-262-26)
अप्यहं शस्त्रमादाय हन्यामात्मानमात्मना। पतेयं गिरिशृङ्गाद्वा विशेयं वा हुताशनम् ॥०३-२६२-२७॥
apy ahaṃ śastram ādāya hanyām ātmānam ātmanā। pateyaṃ giriśṛṅgād vā viśeyaṃ vā hutāśanam॥03-262-27॥
[अपि (api) - even; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; शस्त्रम् (śastram) - weapon; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; हन्याम् (hanyām) - I might kill; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by myself; पतेयम् (pateyam) - I might fall; गिरि-शृङ्गात् (giri-śṛṅgāt) - from the mountain peak; वा (vā) - or; विशेयं (viśeyam) - I might enter; वा (vā) - or; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - fire;]
(Even I, having taken a weapon, might kill myself by myself, or might fall from a mountain peak, or might enter fire.)
Even I might take up a weapon and kill myself, or throw myself from a mountain peak, or enter the fire. (03-262-27)
रामं भर्तारमुत्सृज्य न त्वहं त्वां कथञ्चन। निहीनमुपतिष्ठेयं शार्दूली क्रोष्टुकं यथा ॥०३-२६२-२८॥
rāmaṃ bhartāram utsṛjya na tv ahaṃ tvāṃ kathaṃcana। nihīnam upatiṣṭheyaṃ śārdūlī kroṣṭukaṃ yathā॥03-262-28॥

(Having abandoned Rāma, my husband, I would not, in any way, attend upon you, being deprived, as a tigress (would attend upon) a jackal.)
Having given up Rāma, my husband, never would I attend upon you who are inferior—just as a tigress would not serve a jackal. (03-262-28)
एतादृशं वचः श्रुत्वा लक्ष्मणः प्रियराघवः। पिधाय कर्णौ सद्वृत्तः प्रस्थितो येन राघवः ॥ स रामस्य पदं गृह्य प्रससार धनुर्धरः ॥०३-२६२-२९॥
etādṛśaṃ vacaḥ śrutvā lakṣmaṇaḥ priyarāghavaḥ। pidhāya karṇau sadvṛttaḥ prasthito yena rāghavaḥ॥ sa rāmasya padaṃ gṛhya prasasāra dhanurdharaḥ॥03-262-29॥
[एतादृशं (etādṛśam) - of this kind; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakṣmaṇa; प्रिय (priya) - dear; राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - descendant of Raghu; पिधाय (pidhāya) - having closed; कर्णौ (karṇau) - ears (dual); सद्वृत्तः (sadvṛttaḥ) - of good conduct; प्रस्थितः (prasthitaḥ) - set forth; येन (yena) - by whom; राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - Rāghava (Rama); स (sa) - he; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; पदं (padaṃ) - path; गृह्य (gṛhya) - having taken; प्रससार (prasasāra) - advanced; धनुर्धरः (dhanurdharaḥ) - the bow-bearing one;]
(Having heard speech of this kind, Lakṣmaṇa, the dear descendant of Raghu, having closed both ears, of good conduct, set forth by whom Rāghava. He, having taken Rāma's path, advanced, the bow-bearing one.)
Having heard such speech, Lakṣmaṇa, the dear Rāghava, displaying good conduct by closing both his ears, set out in the direction where Rāma had gone. He, the bow-bearing one, taking the path of Rāma, advanced. (03-262-29)
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे रक्षो रावणः प्रत्यदृश्यत। अभव्यो भव्यरूपेण भस्मच्छन्न इवानलः ॥ यतिवेषप्रतिच्छन्नो जिहीर्षुस्तामनिन्दिताम् ॥०३-२६२-३०॥
etasminn-antare rakṣo rāvaṇaḥ pratyadṛśyata। abhavyo bhavyarūpeṇa bhasmacchanna ivānalaḥ॥ yativiṣa-praticchanno jihīrṣus tāmaninditām॥03-262-30॥
[एतस्मिन्नन्तरे (etasminn-antare) - in this meanwhile; रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - the rākṣasa (demon); रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; प्रत्यदृश्यत (pratyadṛśyata) - appeared; अभव्यो (abhavyo) - evil-natured; भव्यरूपेण (bhavyarūpeṇa) - with auspicious form; भस्मच्छन्न (bhasmacchanna) - covered with ashes; इव (iva) - like; अनलः (analaḥ) - fire; यतिवेष-प्रतिच्छन्नः (yativiṣa-praticchannaḥ) - concealed by ascetic's guise; जिहीर्षुः (jihīrṣuḥ) - desiring to seize; ताम् (tām) - her; अनिन्दिताम् (aninditām) - the blameless one (Sītā);]
(In this meanwhile, the demon Rāvaṇa appeared, evil-natured with auspicious form, like fire covered with ashes, concealed by ascetic's guise, desiring to seize the blameless one, her.)
Meanwhile, the demon Rāvaṇa, evil at heart but appearing auspicious, appeared like fire hidden under ashes, disguised as an ascetic and intent on abducting the blameless Sītā. (03-262-30)
सा तमालक्ष्य सम्प्राप्तं धर्मज्ञा जनकात्मजा। निमन्त्रयामास तदा फलमूलाशनादिभिः ॥०३-२६२-३१॥
sā tam ākṣya samprāptaṃ dharmajñā janakātmajā. nimantrayām āsa tadā phala-mūla-aśana-ādibhiḥ ॥03-262-31॥
[सा (sā) - she; तम् (tam) - him; आलक्ष्य (ālaksya) - having seen; सम्प्राप्तम् (samprāptam) - arrived; धर्मज्ञा (dharmajñā) - knower of dharma; जनकात्मजा (janakātmajā) - daughter of Janaka; निमन्त्रयामास (nimantrayām āsa) - invited; तदा (tadā) - then; फलमूलाशनादिभिः (phala-mūla-aśana-ādibhiḥ) - with fruits, roots, and food, etc.;]
(She, having seen him arrived, the knower of dharma, daughter of Janaka, then invited (him) with fruits, roots, food, and the like.)
Seeing him arrive, the righteous daughter of Janaka then invited him with offerings of fruits, roots, and similar foods. (03-262-31)
अवमन्य स तत्सर्वं स्वरूपं प्रतिपद्य च। सान्त्वयामास वैदेहीमिति राक्षसपुङ्गवः ॥०३-२६२-३२॥
avamanya sa tatsarvaṃ svarūpaṃ pratipadya ca। sāntvayāmāsa vaidehīmiti rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ ॥03-262-32॥
[अवमन्य (avamanya) - having disregarded; स (sa) - he; तत्सर्वं (tatsarvaṃ) - all that; स्वरूपं (svarūpaṃ) - own form; प्रतिपद्य (pratipadya) - having assumed; च (ca) - and; सान्त्वयामास (sāntvayāmāsa) - conciliated; वैदेहीम् (vaidehīm) - Vaidehī; इति (iti) - thus; राक्षसपुङ्गवः (rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ) - the foremost of the Rākṣasas;]
(Having disregarded, he all that, his own form having assumed and, conciliated Vaidehī thus, the foremost of the Rākṣasas.)
Having disregarded all that, and having assumed his own form, the foremost of the Rākṣasas thus conciliated Vaidehī. (03-262-32)
सीते राक्षसराजोऽहं रावणो नाम विश्रुतः। मम लङ्का पुरी नाम्ना रम्या पारे महोदधेः ॥०३-२६२-३३॥
sīte rākṣasarājo'haṃ rāvaṇo nāma viśrutaḥ। mama laṅkā purī nāmnā ramyā pāre mahodadheḥ॥03-262-33॥
[सीते (sīte) - O Sītā; राक्षसराजः (rākṣasarājaḥ) - king of the rākṣasas; अहम् (aham) - I; रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; नाम (nāma) - named; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - famous; मम (mama) - my; लङ्का (laṅkā) - Laṅkā; पुरी (purī) - city; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; रम्या (ramyā) - pleasant; पारे (pāre) - on the far shore; महोदधेः (mahodadheḥ) - of the great ocean;]
(O Sītā, I am the king of the rākṣasas, known by the name Rāvaṇa, famous. My city Laṅkā, called by name, pleasant, is on the far shore of the great ocean.)
O Sītā, I am Rāvaṇa, the king of the rākṣasas, renowned by name. My pleasant city, Laṅkā by name, stands across the great ocean. (03-262-33)
तत्र त्वं वरनारीषु शोभिष्यसि मया सह। भार्या मे भव सुश्रोणि तापसं त्यज राघवम् ॥०३-२६२-३४॥
tatra tvaṃ varanārīṣu śobhiṣyasi mayā saha। bhāryā me bhava suśroṇi tāpasaṃ tyaja rāghavam॥03-262-34॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वरनारीषु (varanārīṣu) - among excellent women; शोभिष्यसि (śobhiṣyasi) - you will shine; मया (mayā) - with me; सह (saha) - together; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; मे (me) - my; भव (bhava) - be; सुश्रोणि (suśroṇi) - O beautiful-hipped one; तापसं (tāpasaṃ) - the ascetic; त्यज (tyaja) - abandon; राघवम् (rāghavam) - Rāghava (Rāma);]
(There you among excellent women will shine together with me. Be my wife, O beautiful-hipped one. Abandon the ascetic Rāghava.)
There, you will shine among excellent women together with me. Become my wife, O beautiful-hipped lady, and abandon the ascetic Rāghava. (03-262-34)
एवमादीनि वाक्यानि श्रुत्वा सीताथ जानकी। पिधाय कर्णौ सुश्रोणी मैवमित्यब्रवीद्वचः ॥०३-२६२-३५॥
evam-ādīni vākyāni śrutvā sītātha jānakī। pidhāya karṇau suśroṇī maivam-ity abravīd vacaḥ॥03-262-35॥
[एवमादीनि (evam-ādīni) - such and other; (evam—thus; ādīni—beginning, and the like;) वाक्यानि (vākyāni) - statements; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सीता (sītā) - Sītā; अथ (atha) - then; जानकी (jānakī) - Jānakī; (daughter of Janaka, i.e., Sītā;) पिधाय (pidhāya) - having covered; कर्णौ (karṇau) - her ears; सुश्रोणी (suśroṇī) - one with beautiful hips; मैवम् (maivam) - not thus; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - she spoke; वचः (vacaḥ) - word;]
(Such and other statements having heard Sītā then Jānakī having covered her ears, the beautiful-hipped, "not thus", thus, she spoke word.)
Hearing such words, then Sītā, Jānakī, with beautiful hips, covered her ears and said, "Not so." (03-262-35)
प्रपतेद्द्यौः सनक्षत्रा पृथिवी शकलीभवेत्। शैत्यमग्निरियान्नाहं त्यजेयं रघुनन्दनम् ॥०३-२६२-३६॥
prapateddyauḥ sanakṣatrā pṛthivī śakalībhavet| śaityamagniriyānnāhaṃ tyajeyaṃ raghunandanam ॥03-262-36॥
[प्रपतेत् (prapatet) - might fall down; द्यौः (dyauḥ) - the sky; सनक्षत्रा (sanakṣatrā) - with stars; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; शकलीभवेत् (śakalībhavet) - might be shattered; शैत्यम् (śaityam) - coldness; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; इयात् (iyāt) - may attain; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; त्यजेयम् (tyajeyam) - would ever abandon; रघुनन्दनम् (raghunandanam) - Raghunandana (Rama);]
(The sky with stars might fall down, the earth might be shattered, fire may attain coldness, I would not abandon Raghunandana.)
Even if the starry sky should fall, the earth were to be shattered, or fire turned cold, I would never abandon Raghunandana (Rama). (03-262-36)
कथं हि भिन्नकरटं पद्मिनं वनगोचरम्। उपस्थाय महानागं करेणुः सूकरं स्पृशेत् ॥०३-२६२-३७॥
kathaṁ hi bhinnakaraṭaṁ padminaṁ vanagocarām। upasthāya mahānāgaṁ kareṇuḥ sūkareṁ spṛśet ॥03-262-37॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; भिन्नकरटं (bhinnakaraṭam) - with broken trunk; पद्मिनं (padminam) - lotus-pond-dwelling; वनगोचरम् (vanagocaram) - moving in the forest; उपस्थाय (upasthāya) - having approached; महानागं (mahānāgam) - great elephant; करेणुः (kareṇuḥ) - female elephant; सूकरं (sūkaram) - boar; स्पृशेत् (spṛśet) - would touch;]
(How indeed with broken trunk lotus-pond-dwelling moving-in-the-forest, having approached the great elephant, would the female elephant touch the boar?)
How indeed could a female elephant, dwelling in the lotus pond and moving about the forest with a broken trunk, upon encountering the great elephant, touch a boar? (03-262-37)
कथं हि पीत्वा माध्वीकं पीत्वा च मधुमाधवीम्। लोभं सौवीरके कुर्यान्नारी काचिदिति स्मरे ॥०३-२६२-३८॥
kathaṁ hi pītvā mādhvīkaṁ pītvā ca madhumādhavīm। lobhaṁ sauvīrake kuryānnārī kāciditi smare ॥03-262-38॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; माध्वीकं (mādhvīkaṁ) - mādhvika (honey wine); पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; च (ca) - and; मधुमाधवीम् (madhumādhavīm) - madhu-mādhavī (sweet mādhavī wine); लोभं (lobhaṁ) - greed; सौवीरके (sauvīrake) - for sauvīraka (another kind of wine); कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would do; नारी (nārī) - woman; काचित् (kācid) - any; इति (iti) - thus; स्मरे (smare) - let one remember;]
(How indeed, having drunk mādhvika, having drunk also sweet mādhavī, would a woman have greed for sauvīraka; thus let one remember.)
How indeed, after drinking mādhvika and also sweet mādhavī wine, would any woman feel greed for sauvīraka? Keep this in mind. (03-262-38)
इति सा तं समाभाष्य प्रविवेशाश्रमं पुनः। तामनुद्रुत्य सुश्रोणीं रावणः प्रत्यषेधयत् ॥०३-२६२-३९॥
iti sā taṃ samābhāṣya praviveśāśramaṃ punaḥ. tām anudrutya suśroṇīṃ rāvaṇaḥ pratyaṣedhayat ॥03-262-39॥

भर्त्सयित्वा तु रूक्षेण स्वरेण गतचेतनाम्। मूर्धजेषु निजग्राह खमुपाचक्रमे ततः ॥०३-२६२-४०॥
bhartsayitvā tu rūkṣeṇa svareṇa gatacetanām। mūrdhajeṣu nijagrāha khamupācakrame tataḥ॥03-262-40॥
[भर्त्सयित्वा (bhartsayitvā) - having rebuked; तु (tu) - but; रूक्षेण (rūkṣeṇa) - harsh; स्वरेण (svareṇa) - with voice; गतचेतनाम् (gatacetanām) - who had lost consciousness; मूर्धजेषु (mūrdhajeṣu) - by the hair (of the head); निजग्राह (nijagrāha) - he seized; खम् (kham) - the sky; उपाचक्रमे (upācakrame) - he ascended; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(Having rebuked but with a harsh voice her who had lost consciousness, by the hair (of the head) he seized, the sky he ascended then.)
But after rebuking her harshly with his voice, and while she had lost consciousness, he seized her by the hair and then ascended into the sky. (03-262-40)
तां ददर्श तदा गृध्रो जटायुर्गिरिगोचरः। रुदतीं राम रामेति ह्रियमाणां तपस्विनीम् ॥०३-२६२-४१॥
tāṃ dadarśa tadā gṛdhro jaṭāyur girigocharaḥ। rudatīṃ rāma rāmeti hriyamāṇāṃ tapasvinīm ॥03-262-41॥
