सखा दशरथस्यासीज्जटायुररुणात्मजः। गृध्रराजो महावीर्यः सम्पातिर्यस्य सोदरः ॥०३-२६३-१॥
sakhā daśarathasyāsīj jaṭāyur aruṇātmajaḥ। gṛdhrarājo mahāvīryaḥ sampātir yasya sodaraḥ॥03-263-1॥
[सखा (sakhā) - friend; दशरथस्य (daśarathasya) - of Daśaratha; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; जटायुः (jaṭāyuḥ) - Jaṭāyu; अरुणात्मजः (aruṇātmajaḥ) - son of Aruṇa; गृध्रराजः (gṛdhrarājaḥ) - king of vultures; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great might; सम्पातिः (sampātiḥ) - Sampāti; यस्य (yasya) - whose; सः (saḥ) - he; उदरः (udaraḥ) - brother;]
(Friend of Daśaratha was Jaṭāyu, son of Aruṇa, king of vultures, of great might; Sampāti whose brother he was. (03-263-1))
Jaṭāyu, the son of Aruṇa, a friend of Daśaratha, the great, mighty king of vultures, whose brother was Sampāti. (03-263-1)
स ददर्श तदा सीतां रावणाङ्कगतां स्नुषाम्। क्रोधादभ्यद्रवत्पक्षी रावणं राक्षसेश्वरम् ॥०३-२६३-२॥
sa dadarśa tadā sītāṃ rāvaṇāṅkagatāṃ snuṣām। krodhād abhyadravat pakṣī rāvaṇaṃ rākṣaseśvaram॥03-263-2॥
[स (sa) - he; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; तदा (tadā) - then; सीतां (sītām) - Sītā; रावणाङ्कगतां (rāvaṇāṅkagatāṃ) - seated on Rāvaṇa's lap; स्नुषाम् (snuṣām) - daughter-in-law; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - from anger; अभ्यद्रवत् (abhyadravat) - rushed toward; पक्षी (pakṣī) - the bird; रावणम् (rāvaṇam) - Rāvaṇa; राक्षसेश्वरम् (rākṣaseśvaram) - lord of the rākṣasas;]
(He saw then Sītā, daughter-in-law, seated on Rāvaṇa's lap. From anger, the bird rushed toward Rāvaṇa, the lord of the rākṣasas.)
Then he saw Sītā, his daughter-in-law, sitting on Rāvaṇa's lap. Angered, the bird rushed at Rāvaṇa, the king of the rākṣasas. (03-263-2)
अथैनमब्रवीद्गृध्रो मुञ्च मुञ्चेति मैथिलीम्। ध्रियमाणे मयि कथं हरिष्यसि निशाचर ॥ न हि मे मोक्ष्यसे जीवन्यदि नोत्सृजसे वधूम् ॥०३-२६३-३॥
athainamabravīdgṛdhro muñca muñceti maithilīm। dhriyamāṇe mayi kathaṃ hariṣyasi niśācara ॥ na hi me mokṣyase jīvanyadi notsṛjase vadhūm ॥03-263-3॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; गृध्रः (gṛdhraḥ) - the vulture; मुञ्च (muñca) - release; मुञ्च (muñca) - release; इति (iti) - thus; मैथिलीम् (maithilīm) - Maithilī (Sītā); ध्रियमाणे (dhriyamāṇe) - while being held; मयि (mayi) - by me; कथम् (katham) - how; हरिष्यसि (hariṣyasi) - will you take away; निशाचर (niśācara) - night-wanderer (Rāvaṇa); न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - from me; मोक्ष्यसे (mokṣyase) - will you be released; जीवत् (jīvat) - alive; यदि (yadi) - if; न (na) - not; उत्सृजसे (utsṛjase) - you release; वधूम् (vadhūm) - the bride (Sītā);]
(Then the vulture said to him, "Release! Release!"—Maithilī. While being held by me, how will you take away, night-wanderer? Indeed, you will not be released from me alive if you do not release the bride.)
Then the vulture said to him, "Release! Release Maithilī!" While I am holding her, how will you take her away, night-wanderer? Indeed, you will not escape from me alive if you do not let go of the bride. (03-263-3)
उक्त्वैवं राक्षसेन्द्रं तं चकर्त नखरैर्भृशम्। पक्षतुण्डप्रहारैश्च बहुशो जर्जरीकृतः ॥ चक्षार रुधिरं भूरि गिरिः प्रस्रवणैरिव ॥०३-२६३-४॥
uktvaivaṁ rākṣasendraṁ taṁ cakarta nakharairbhṛśam। pakṣatuṇḍaprahāraiśca bahuśo jarjarīkṛtaḥ॥ cakṣāra rudhiraṁ bhūri giriḥ prasravaṇairiva॥03-263-4॥
[उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; एवं (evaṁ) - thus; राक्षसेन्द्रं (rākṣasendraṁ) - the king of rakṣasas; तं (taṁ) - him; चकर्त (cakarta) - he cut; नखरैः (nakharaiḥ) - with claws; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - violently; पक्षतुण्डप्रहारैः (pakṣatuṇḍaprahāraiḥ) - by blows of wing and beak; च (ca) - and; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - repeatedly; जर्जरीकृतः (jarjarīkṛtaḥ) - bruised, lacerated; चक्षार (cakṣāra) - he poured out; रुधिरं (rudhiraṁ) - blood; भूरि (bhūri) - much; गिरिः (giriḥ) - the mountain; प्रस्रवणैः (prasravaṇaiḥ) - with streams (of blood); इव (iva) - like;]
(Having thus said to the king of rakṣasas, him he cut violently with claws; and, bruised repeatedly by blows of wing and beak, he poured out much blood, like a mountain with streams (of blood).)
Having spoken thus to the king of the rakṣasas, he violently cut him with his claws, and, repeatedly bruised by blows of wing and beak, he shed much blood, like a mountain gushing with streams. (03-263-4)
स वध्यमानो गृध्रेण रामप्रियहितैषिणा। खड्गमादाय चिच्छेद भुजौ तस्य पतत्रिणः ॥०३-२६३-५॥
sa vadhyamānaḥ gṛdhreṇa rāma-priya-hita-iṣiṇā। khaḍgam ādāya ciccheda bhujau tasya patatriṇaḥ ॥03-263-5॥
[स (sa) - he; वध्यमानः (vadhyamānaḥ) - being attacked; गृध्रेण (gṛdhreṇa) - by the vulture; रामप्रियहितैषिणा (rāma-priya-hita-iṣiṇā) - desiring the welfare of Rāma, dear (to him); खड्गम् (khaḍgam) - sword; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - he severed; भुजौ (bhujau) - arms (dual); तस्य (tasya) - of him; पतत्रिणः (patatriṇaḥ) - of the bird;]
(He, being attacked by the vulture desiring the welfare of Rāma, having taken the sword, severed the arms of him, the bird.)
While being attacked by the vulture who wished for Rāma's welfare, he took up his sword and cut off the bird's arms. (03-263-5)
निहत्य गृध्रराजं स छिन्नाभ्रशिखरोपमम्। ऊर्ध्वमाचक्रमे सीतां गृहीत्वाङ्केन राक्षसः ॥०३-२६३-६॥
nihatya gṛdhrarājaṃ sa chinnābhraśikharopamam । ūrdhvamācakrame sītāṃ gṛhītvāṅkena rākṣasaḥ ॥03-263-6॥
[निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; गृध्रराजम् (gṛdhrarājam) - king of vultures; स (sa) - he; छिन्नाभ्रशिखर-उपमम् (chinnābhraśikhara-upamam) - like a mountain-peak of a torn cloud; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; आचक्रमे (ācakrame) - ascended; सीताम् (sītām) - Sītā; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; अङ्केन (aṅkena) - on the lap; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the Rakshasa;]
(Having slain the king of vultures, he, like a peak of a shorn cloud, upwards ascended having taken Sītā on the lap, the Rakshasa.)
The Rakshasa, having slain the king of vultures, ascended upwards with Sītā on his lap, resembling the peak of a sundered cloud. (03-263-6)
यत्र यत्र तु वैदेही पश्यत्याश्रममण्डलम्। सरो वा सरितं वापि तत्र मुञ्चति भूषणम् ॥०३-२६३-७॥
yatra yatra tu vaidehī paśyaty āśrama-maṇḍalam। saraḥ vā saritaṃ vā api tatra muñcati bhūṣaṇam॥03-263-7॥
[यत्र यत्र (yatra yatra) - wherever; wherever; तु (tu) - but; indeed; वैदेही (vaidehī) - Sītā (daughter of Videha); पश्यति (paśyati) - sees; आश्रममण्डलम् (āśrama-maṇḍalam) - hermitage precinct; सरो (saraḥ) - lake; वा (vā) - or; सरितं (saritaṃ) - river; वा अपि (vā api) - or also; तत्र (tatra) - there; मुञ्चति (muñcati) - casts off; lets go; भूषणम् (bhūṣaṇam) - ornament;]
(Wherever wherever indeed Vaidehī (Sītā) sees the hermitage precinct, a lake or river or also, there she casts off ornament.)

सा ददर्श गिरिप्रस्थे पञ्च वानरपुङ्गवान्। तत्र वासो महद्दिव्यमुत्ससर्ज मनस्विनी ॥०३-२६३-८॥
sā dadarśa giriprasthe pañca vānarapuṅgavān। tatra vāso mahaddivyam utsasarja manasvinī ॥03-263-8॥
[सा (sā) - she; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; गिरिप्रस्थे (giriprasthe) - on the mountain slope; पञ्च (pañca) - five; वानरपुङ्गवान् (vānarapuṅgavān) - best among monkeys; तत्र (tatra) - there; वासः (vāsaḥ) - garment; महत् (mahat) - great; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; उत्ससर्ज (utsasarja) - gave up; मनस्विनी (manasvinī) - the high-minded (she);]
(She saw on the mountain slope five best among monkeys. There, the high-minded (she) gave up a great divine garment.)

तत्तेषां वानरेन्द्राणां पपात पवनोद्धुतम्। मध्ये सुपीतं पञ्चानां विद्युन्मेघान्तरे यथा ॥०३-२६३-९॥
tatteṣāṃ vānarendrāṇāṃ papāta pavonuddhutam। madhye supītaṃ pañcānāṃ vidyunmeghāntare yathā॥03-263-9॥
[तत् (tat) - that; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; वानर-इन्द्राणां (vānara-indrāṇāṃ) - of the lordly monkeys; पपात (papāta) - fell; पवन-उद्धुतम् (pavana-uddhutam) - lifted by wind; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; सुपीतम् (supītam) - very yellow (brightly colored); पञ्चानां (pañcānāṃ) - of the five; विद्युत्-मेघ-अन्तरे (vidyut-megha-antare) - in the space among lightning and clouds; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(That, of them, of the lordly monkeys, fell, lifted by wind. In the midst, very yellow, of the five, in the space among lightning and clouds, just as.)
That (object), belonging to those lordly monkeys, fell—lifted by the wind—amidst the five, shining yellow, just as (lightning) in the midst between clouds and lightning. (03-263-9)
एवं हृतायां वैदेह्यां रामो हत्वा महामृगम्। निवृत्तो ददृशे धीमान्भ्रातरं लक्ष्मणं तदा ॥०३-२६३-१०॥
evaṃ hṛtāyāṃ vaidehyāṃ rāmo hatvā mahāmṛgam। nivṛtto dadṛśe dhīmānbhrātaraṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ tadā ॥03-263-10॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; हृतायां (hṛtāyām) - when (she) was taken away; वैदेह्यां (vaidehyām) - Vaidehī, Sītā; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; महामृगम् (mahāmṛgam) - the great deer; निवृत्तः (nivṛttaḥ) - having returned; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - saw; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - brother; लक्ष्मणम् (lakṣmaṇam) - Lakṣmaṇa; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus, when Vaidehī was taken away, Rāma, having slain the great deer, having returned, the wise, saw (his) brother Lakṣmaṇa then.)
Thus, when Vaidehī was taken away, Rāma, after slaying the great deer and returning, then saw his brother Lakṣmaṇa. (03-263-10)
कथमुत्सृज्य वैदेहीं वने राक्षससेविते। इत्येवं भ्रातरं दृष्ट्वा प्राप्तोऽसीति व्यगर्हयत् ॥०३-२६३-११॥
katham utsṛjya vaidehīṃ vane rākṣasa-sevite| ityevaṃ bhrātaraṃ dṛṣṭvā prāpto'sīti vyagarhayat ॥03-263-11॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; वैदेहीम् (vaidehīm) - Vaidehī (Sītā); वने (vane) - in the forest; राक्षससेविते (rākṣasasevite) - attended by Rākṣasas (demons); इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - his brother; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - having arrived; असि (asi) - you are; इति (iti) - thus; व्यगर्हयत् (vyagarhayat) - he censured;]
(How, having abandoned Vaidehī in the forest attended by Rākṣasas, thus, in this way, having seen his brother, (he said) 'You have arrived'—thus he censured.)
Seeing his brother, he censured him, saying, "How could you have come, having abandoned Vaidehī in the forest haunted by Rākṣasas?" (03-263-11)
मृगरूपधरेणाथ रक्षसा सोऽपकर्षणम्। भ्रातुरागमनं चैव चिन्तयन्पर्यतप्यत ॥०३-२६३-१२॥
mṛgarūpadhareṇātha rakṣasā so'pakarṣaṇam| bhrāturāgamanaṃ caiva cintayan paryatapyata ॥03-263-12॥
[मृगरूपधरेण (mṛgarūpadhareṇa) - by one having assumed the form of a deer; अथ (atha) - then; रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by the demon; सः (saḥ) - he; अपकर्षणम् (apakārṣaṇam) - the abduction; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of the brother; आगमनम् (āgamanam) - arrival; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking; पर्यतप्यत (paryatapyata) - he was tormented;]
(By the demon having assumed the form of a deer, then, he (was tormented), thinking of the abduction and indeed the arrival of his brother.)
Then, being tormented, he thought about the abduction by the demon who took the form of a deer, and also about the arrival of his brother. (03-263-12)
गर्हयन्नेव रामस्तु त्वरितस्तं समासदत्। अपि जीवति वैदेही नेति पश्यामि लक्ष्मण ॥०३-२६३-१३॥
garhayanneva rāmas tu tvaritas taṃ samāsadat। api jīvati vaidehī neti paśyāmi lakṣmaṇa ॥03-263-13॥
[गर्हयन् (garhayan) - rebuking; एव (eva) - indeed; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; तु (tu) - but; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - hastily; तम् (tam) - him; समासदत् (samāsadat) - approached; अपि (api) - whether; जीवति (jīvati) - she lives; वैदेही (vaidehī) - Vaidehī (Sītā); न (na) - not; इति (iti) - thus; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; लक्ष्मण (lakṣmaṇa) - Lakṣmaṇa;]
(Rebuking indeed, Rāma but hastily him approached. Whether she lives, Vaidehī, or not—thus—I see, O Lakṣmaṇa.)
Rebuking himself, but hastily, Rāma approached him. I look, O Lakṣmaṇa—does Vaidehī (Sītā) still live or not? (03-263-13)
तस्य तत्सर्वमाचख्यौ सीताया लक्ष्मणो वचः। यदुक्तवत्यसदृशं वैदेही पश्चिमं वचः ॥०३-२६३-१४॥
tasya tatsarvamācakhyau sītāyā lakṣmaṇo vacaḥ। yaduktavatyasadṛśaṃ vaidehī paścimaṃ vacaḥ ॥03-263-14॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आचख्यौ (ācakhyau) - reported; सीतायाः (sītāyāḥ) - of Sītā; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakṣmaṇa; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; यद् (yad) - which; उक्तवती (uktavatī) - had spoken (she); असदृशं (asadṛśam) - unworthy; वैदेही (vaidehī) - Vaidehī (Sītā); पश्चिमं (paścimam) - last, final; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
(Lakṣmaṇa reported all that, the words of Sītā, which Vaidehī had spoken, unworthy, the final words.)
Lakṣmaṇa conveyed to him all the words of Sītā—those last, unworthy words that Vaidehī had spoken. (03-263-14)
दह्यमानेन तु हृदा रामोऽभ्यपतदाश्रमम्। स ददर्श तदा गृध्रं निहतं पर्वतोपमम् ॥०३-२६३-१५॥
dahyamānena tu hṛdā rāmo'bhyapatad-āśramam। sa dadarśa tadā gṛdhraṃ nihataṃ parvatopamam ॥03-263-15॥
[दह्यमानेन (dahyamānena) - being burned; (by grief); तु (tu) - but; हृदा (hṛdā) - in (his) heart; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; अभ्यपतत् (abhyapatat) - approached; (rushed toward); आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; सः (saḥ) - he; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; तदा (tadā) - then; गृध्रं (gṛdhraṃ) - the vulture; निहतम् (nihatam) - slain; killed; पर्वत-उपमम् (parvata-upamam) - mountain-like;]
(But, with a heart being burned (by grief), Rāma approached the hermitage; he then saw the vulture slain, mountain-like.)

राक्षसं शङ्कमानस्तु विकृष्य बलवद्धनुः। अभ्यधावत काकुत्स्थस्ततस्तं सहलक्ष्मणः ॥०३-२६३-१६॥
rākṣasaṃ śaṅkamānas tu vikṛṣya balavaddhanuḥ। abhyadhāvata kākutsthas tatas taṃ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ॥03-263-16॥
[राक्षसं (rākṣasam) - demon; शङ्कमानः (śaṅkamānaḥ) - suspecting; तु (tu) - but; विकृष्य (vikṛṣya) - having drawn (back); बलवद्धनुः (balavat-dhanuḥ) - with strong bow; अभ्यधावत (abhyadhāvata) - rushed toward; काकुत्स्थः (kākutsthaḥ) - Kākutstha (Rāma); ततः (tataḥ) - then; तं (tam) - him; सहलक्ष्मणः (sahalakṣmaṇaḥ) - with Lakṣmaṇa;]
(But suspecting the demon, having drawn his strong bow, Kākutstha rushed toward him with Lakṣmaṇa then.)
But suspecting the demon, Kākutstha (Rāma), together with Lakṣmaṇa, then rushed toward him, drawing his strong bow. (03-263-16)
स तावुवाच तेजस्वी सहितौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। गृध्रराजोऽस्मि भद्रं वां सखा दशरथस्य ह ॥०३-२६३-१७॥
sa tāv uvāca tejasvī sahitau rāma-lakṣmaṇau। gṛdhrarājo'smi bhadraṃ vāṃ sakhā daśarathasya ha ॥03-263-17॥
[स (sa) - he; तौ (tau) - those two; उवाच (uvāca) - said; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - radiant; सहितौ (sahitau) - together; रामलक्ष्मणौ (rāma-lakṣmaṇau) - Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa; गृध्रराजः-अस्मि (gṛdhrarājaḥ-asmi) - I am the king of vultures; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - well-being; वाम् (vām) - to you two; सखा (sakhā) - friend; दशरथस्य (daśarathasya) - of Daśaratha; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(He said to those two, the radiant Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, who were together: "I am the king of vultures. Well-being to you two, the friend of Daśaratha indeed." (03-263-17))
The radiant king of vultures spoke to Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, who were together: "I am the king of vultures—well-being to you both—I am indeed the friend of Daśaratha." (03-263-17)
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सङ्गृह्य धनुषी शुभे। कोऽयं पितरमस्माकं नाम्नाहेत्यूचतुश्च तौ ॥०३-२६३-१८॥
tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā saṅgṛhya dhanuṣī śubhe। ko'yaṃ pitaram asmākaṃ nāmnā hety ūcatuś ca tau॥03-263-18॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तद्वचनं (tad vacanam) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सङ्गृह्य (saṅgṛhya) - taking up; धनुषी (dhanuṣī) - bows; शुभे (śubhe) - splendid; कः (kaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; हेति (heti) - O; ऊचतुश् (ūcatuḥ) - the two said; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two;]
(Of him, those words having heard, taking up splendid bows, "Who is this, our father, by name, O?" thus both of them said.)
Having heard those words of his, and taking up their splendid bows, the two said: "Who is this, our father, by name, O?" (03-263-18)
ततो ददृशतुस्तौ तं छिन्नपक्षद्वयं तथा। तयोः शशंस गृध्रस्तु सीतार्थे रावणाद्वधम् ॥०३-२६३-१९॥
tato dadṛṣatustau taṃ chinnapakṣadvayaṃ tathā। tayoḥ śaśaṃsa gṛdhrastu sītārthe rāvaṇādvadham ॥03-263-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ददृशतुः (dadṛṣatuḥ) - (they) both saw; तौ (tau) - those two; तं (taṃ) - him; छिन्नपक्षद्वयम् (chinna-pakṣa-dvayam) - with both wings cut; तथा (tathā) - thus; तयोः (tayoḥ) - to those two; शशंस (śaśaṃsa) - told; गृध्रः (gṛdhraḥ) - the vulture; तु (tu) - but; सीतार्थे (sītārthe) - for Sita's sake; रावणात् (rāvaṇāt) - by Ravana; वधम् (vadham) - the killing;]
(Then those two both saw him thus, with both wings cut. But to those two, the vulture told the killing by Ravana for Sita's sake.)
Then those two both saw him lying there with both wings cut, and the vulture told them about the killing committed by Ravana for Sita's sake. (03-263-19)
अपृच्छद्राघवो गृध्रं रावणः कां दिशं गतः। तस्य गृध्रः शिरःकम्पैराचचक्षे ममार च ॥०३-२६३-२०॥
apṛcchad rāghavo gṛdhraṃ rāvaṇaḥ kāṃ diśaṃ gataḥ। tasya gṛdhraḥ śiraḥkampair ācacakṣe mamāra ca॥03-263-20॥

(Rāghava asked the vulture, "Rāvaṇa, which direction had gone?" The vulture with head movements indicated his (direction) and expired.)

दक्षिणामिति काकुत्स्थो विदित्वास्य तदिङ्गितम्। संस्कारं लम्भयामास सखायं पूजयन्पितुः ॥०३-२६३-२१॥
dakṣiṇām iti kākutstho viditvā asya tat-iṅgitam। saṁskāram lambhayām āsa sakhāyam pūjayan pituḥ ॥03-263-21॥
[दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - the fee; इति (iti) - thus; काकुत्स्थः (kākutsthaḥ) - Kākutstha (Rāma); विदित्वा (viditvā) - having understood; अस्य (asya) - his; तत्-इङ्गितम् (tat-iṅgitam) - that intention; संस्कारम् (saṁskāram) - ceremony; लम्भयाम्-आस (lambhayām āsa) - caused to be received; सखायम् (sakhāyam) - to his friend; पूजन् (pūjayan) - honoring; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father;]
(The Kākutstha (Rāma), thus having understood his intention for the fee, caused the ceremony to be performed for his friend, honoring (the will) of the father.)

दुःखशोकसमाविष्टौ वैदेहीहरणार्दितौ। जग्मतुर्दण्डकारण्यं दक्षिणेन परन्तपौ ॥०३-२६३-२३॥
duḥkhaśokasamāviṣṭau vaidehī-haraṇārditau. jagmatur daṇḍakāraṇyaṃ dakṣiṇena parantapau ॥03-263-23॥
[दुःखशोकसमाविष्टौ (duḥkha-śoka-samāviṣṭau) - filled with pain and sorrow; वैदेहीहरणार्दितौ (vaidehī-haraṇa-ārditau) - distressed by the abduction of Vaidehī (Sītā); जग्मतु (jagmatuḥ) - the two went; दण्डकारण्यम् (daṇḍakāraṇyam) - Daṇḍaka forest; दक्षिणेन (dakṣiṇena) - by the southern (path); परन्तपौ (parantapau) - the scorcher of foes (i.e., the two heroes);]
(Filled with pain and sorrow, distressed by the abduction of Vaidehī, the two scorcher of foes went to the Daṇḍaka forest by the southern path.)
Overcome with pain and sorrow, and distressed by the abduction of Vaidehī, the two heroes took the southern route to the Daṇḍaka forest. (03-263-23)
वने महति तस्मिंस्तु रामः सौमित्रिणा सह। ददर्श मृगयूथानि द्रवमाणानि सर्वशः ॥ शब्दं च घोरं सत्त्वानां दावाग्नेरिव वर्धतः ॥०३-२६३-२४॥
vane mahati tasmiṃstu rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha। dadarśa mṛgayūthāni dravamāṇāni sarvaśaḥ ॥ śabdaṃ ca ghoraṃ sattvānāṃ dāvāgneriva vardhataḥ ॥03-263-24॥
[वने (vane) - in the forest; महति (mahati) - great; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तु (tu) - but; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; सौमित्रिणा (saumitriṇā) - with Saumitri (Lakshmana); सह (saha) - with; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; मृगयूथानि (mṛgayūthāni) - herds of deer; द्रवमाणानि (dravamāṇāni) - running; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in all directions; शब्दं (śabdaṃ) - the sound; च (ca) - and; घोरं (ghoraṃ) - terrible; सत्त्वानां (sattvānāṃ) - of creatures; दावाग्नेः (dāvāgneḥ) - of forest fire; इव (iva) - like; वर्धतः (vardhataḥ) - increasing;]
(In the great forest, in that, but Rama with Saumitri, with, saw herds of deer running in all directions; and the terrible sound of creatures increasing like of the forest fire.)
But Rama, together with Saumitri (Lakshmana), saw herds of deer fleeing everywhere in that great forest, and also heard the terrible noise of creatures growing like that of a forest fire. (03-263-24)
अपश्येतां मुहूर्ताच्च कबन्धं घोरदर्शनम्। मेघपर्वतसङ्काशं शालस्कन्धं महाभुजम् ॥ उरोगतविशालाक्षं महोदरमहामुखम् ॥०३-२६३-२५॥
apaśyetāṁ muhūrtācca kabandhaṁ ghoradarśanam। meghaparvatasaṅkāśaṁ śālaskandhaṁ mahābhujam ॥ urogataviśālākṣaṁ mahodaramahāmukham ॥03-263-25॥
[अपश्येताम् (apaśyetām) - they saw; मुहूर्ताच् (muhūrtāc) - after a moment; च (ca) - and; कबन्धम् (kabandham) - Kabandha; घोरदर्शनम् (ghoradarśanam) - terrible to behold; मेघपर्वतसङ्काशम् (meghaparvatasaṅkāśam) - resembling a cloud-mountain; शालस्कन्धम् (śālaskandham) - having the shoulders of a śāla tree; महाभुजम् (mahābhujam) - having mighty arms; उरोगतविशालाक्षम् (urogataviśālākṣam) - having great eyes on the chest; महोदरमहामुखम् (mahodaramahāmukham) - with great belly and great mouth;]
(They saw, after a moment and, Kabandha, terrible to behold, resembling a cloud-mountain, having the shoulders of a śāla tree, with mighty arms, with great eyes on the chest, with great belly and great mouth.)
After a moment, they saw Kabandha, terrifying to behold, resembling a cloud-covered mountain, having shoulders like a śāla tree, with mighty arms, large eyes set in his chest, and a huge belly and mouth. (03-263-25)
यदृच्छयाथ तद्रक्षः करे जग्राह लक्ष्मणम्। विषादमगमत्सद्यः सौमित्रिरथ भारत ॥०३-२६३-२६॥
yadṛcchayātha tadrakṣaḥ kare jagrāha lakṣmaṇam। viṣādamagamatsadyaḥ saumitriratha bhārata ॥03-263-26॥
[यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; अथ (atha) - then; तत् (tat) - that; रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - rākṣasa (demon); करे (kare) - with (his) hand; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; लक्ष्मणम् (lakṣmaṇam) - Lakṣmaṇa; विषादम् (viṣādam) - distress; अगमत् (agamats) - reached; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - the son of Sumitrā (Lakṣmaṇa); अथ (atha) - then; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(By chance, then, that demon seized Lakṣmaṇa with (his) hand. Immediately, the son of Sumitrā (Lakṣmaṇa) then reached distress, O Bhārata.)
Then, by chance, that demon seized Lakṣmaṇa with his hand. Instantly, O Bhārata, Sumitrā's son was overcome with grief. (03-263-26)
स राममभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य कृष्यते येन तन्मुखम्। विषण्णश्चाब्रवीद्रामं पश्यावस्थामिमां मम ॥०३-२६३-२७॥
sa rāma-m-abhisamprekṣya kṛṣyate yena tan-mukham| viṣaṇṇaś ca abravīt rāmaṃ paśya avasthām imāṃ mama ॥03-263-27॥
[स (sa) - he; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma (accusative); अभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य (abhisamprekṣya) - having looked at; gazing intently at; कृष्यते (kṛṣyate) - is being drawn; is being dragged; येन (yena) - by whom; by which; तन्मुखम् (tan-mukham) - that face; विषण्णः (viṣaṇṇaḥ) - distressed; dejected; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; रामम् (rāmam) - to Rāma; पश्य (paśya) - see; look; अवस्थाम् (avasthām) - condition; state; इमाम् (imām) - this; मम (mama) - of mine; my;]
(He, having looked at Rāma, by whom that face is being drawn, and distressed, said to Rāma: "See this condition of mine." (03-263-27))

[हरणं (haraṇam) - abduction; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वैदेह्या (vaidehyā) - of Vaidehī (Sītā); मम (mama) - my; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; उपप्लवः (upaplavaḥ) - disturbance; राज्यभ्रंशश् (rājya-bhraṃśaḥ) - loss of kingdom; च (ca) - and; भवत: (bhavataḥ) - your; तातस्य (tātasya) - of father; मरणं (maraṇam) - death; तथा (tathā) - as well;]
(Abduction indeed of Vaidehī, and my this disturbance, loss of kingdom and your father's death as well.)
There is the abduction of Vaidehī, and this calamity of mine, as well as the loss of the kingdom and your father’s death. (03-263-28)
नाहं त्वां सह वैदेह्या समेतं कोसलागतम्। द्रक्ष्यामि पृथिवीराज्ये पितृपैतामहे स्थितम् ॥०३-२६३-२९॥
nāhaṃ tvāṃ saha vaidehyā sametaṃ kosalāgatam। drakṣyāmi pṛthivīrājye pitṛpaitāmahe sthitam॥03-263-29॥
[न (na) - not; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; सह (saha) - with; वैदेह्या (vaidehyā) - with Vaidehī (Sītā); समेतं (sametam) - joined; कोसलागतम् (kosalāgatam) - arrived in Kośala; द्रक्ष्यामि (drakṣyāmi) - I will see; पृथिवीराज्ये (pṛthivīrājye) - in the rulership of the earth; पितृपैतामहे (pitṛpaitāmahe) - ancestral (of father and grandfather); स्थितम् (sthitam) - established;]
(Not I you with Vaidehī joined, arrived in Kośala, I will see in the rulership of the earth, ancestral established.)
I will not see you, together with Vaidehī, having returned to Kośala, established in the ancestral kingdom of the earth. (03-263-29)
द्रक्ष्यन्त्यार्यस्य धन्या ये कुशलाजशमीलवैः। अभिषिक्तस्य वदनं सोमं साभ्रलवं यथा ॥०३-२६३-३०॥
drakṣyanty āryasya dhanyā ye kuśalājaśamīlavaiḥ। abhiṣiktasya vadanaṃ somaṃ sābhra-lavaṃ yathā॥03-263-30॥
[द्रक्ष्यन्ति (drakṣyanti) - they will see; आर्यस्य (āryasya) - of the noble one; धन्या (dhanyāḥ) - fortunate ones; ये (ye) - who; कुशलाजशमीलवैः (kuśalājaśamīlavaiḥ) - with blades of kuśa, rice, and śamī grass; अभिषिक्तस्य (abhiṣiktasya) - anointed; वदनं (vadanaṃ) - face; सोमं (somaṃ) - like the moon; साभ्रलवं (sābhra-lavaṃ) - with a drop like a cloud; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Fortunate ones who, with blades of kuśa, rice, and śamī grass, will see the noble one's anointed face like the moon with a drop as (a cloud).)
Those fortunate ones who, with blades of kuśa, rice, and śamī grass, will see the noble one's face, anointed and shining like the moon with a drop resembling a cloud, are truly blessed. (03-263-30)
एवं बहुविधं धीमान्विललाप स लक्ष्मणः। तमुवाचाथ काकुत्स्थः सम्भ्रमेष्वप्यसम्भ्रमः ॥०३-२६३-३१॥
evaṁ bahuvidhaṁ dhīmān vilalāpa sa lakṣmaṇaḥ। tam uvācātha kākutsthaḥ sambhrameṣv apy asambhramaḥ॥03-263-31॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; बहुविधं (bahuvidhaṁ) - in many ways; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; विललाप (vilalāpa) - lamented; स (sa) - he; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakṣmaṇa; तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; अथ (atha) - then; काकुत्स्थः (kākutsthaḥ) - the descendant of Kakutstha; सम्भ्रमेषु (sambhrameṣu) - in confusions; अपि (api) - even; असम्भ्रमः (asambhramaḥ) - unagitated;]
(Thus, the wise Lakṣmaṇa lamented in many ways; then, to him the descendant of Kakutstha, unagitated even in confusions, spoke.)
Thus, Lakṣmaṇa, the wise one, lamented in many ways; then, the descendant of Kakutstha, who remained unperturbed even in times of confusion, spoke to him. (03-263-31)
मा विषीद नरव्याघ्र नैष कश्चिन्मयि स्थिते। छिन्ध्यस्य दक्षिणं बाहुं छिन्नः सव्यो मया भुजः ॥०३-२६३-३२॥
mā viṣīda naravyāghra naiṣa kaścin mayi sthite। chindhy asya dakṣiṇaṃ bāhuṃ chinnaḥ savyo mayā bhujaḥ ॥03-263-32॥
[मा (mā) (mā) - do not; विषीद (viṣīda) (viṣīda) - be despondent; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; नैष (naiṣa) (naiṣa) - this one (he) not; कश्चित् (kaścit) (kaścit) - anyone; मयि (mayi) (mayi) - when I am; स्थिते (sthite) (sthite) - present; छिन्धि (chindhi) (chindhi) - cut; अस्य (asya) (asya) - his; दक्षिणं (dakṣiṇam) (dakṣiṇam) - right; बाहुं (bāhum) (bāhum) - arm; छिन्नः (chinnaḥ) (chinnaḥ) - severed; सव्यः (savyaḥ) (savyaḥ) - left; मया (mayā) (mayā) - by me; भुजः (bhujaḥ) (bhujaḥ) - arm;]
(Do not be despondent, O tiger among men, for as long as I am present, no one (is to be feared); cut off his right arm, the left arm has been severed by me.)
Do not lose heart, O tiger among men; while I am here, no one (needs to fear). Cut off his right arm—his left arm has already been severed by me. (03-263-32)
इत्येवं वदता तस्य भुजो रामेण पातितः। खड्गेन भृशतीक्ष्णेन निकृत्तस्तिलकाण्डवत् ॥०३-२६३-३३॥
ityevaṃ vadatā tasya bhujo rāmeṇa pātitaḥ। khaḍgena bhṛśatīkṣṇena nikṛttastilakāṇḍavat ॥03-263-33॥
[इति एवम् (iti evam) - thus; in this manner; वदता (vadatā) - speaking (by one who is saying); तस्य (tasya) - of him; भुजः (bhujaḥ) - arm; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; पातितः (pātitaḥ) - struck down; खड्गेन (khaḍgena) - with the sword; भृश (bhṛśa) - very; तीक्ष्णेन (tīkṣṇena) - sharp; निकृत्तः (nikṛttaḥ) - severed; तिलकाण्डवत् (tilakāṇḍavat) - like a sesame stalk;]
(Thus, while he was speaking in this manner, his arm by Rāma was struck down with the sword, very sharp, severed like a sesame stalk.)
Thus, while he was saying this, his arm was cut off by Rāma with a very sharp sword, severed like a stalk of sesame. (03-263-33)
ततोऽस्य दक्षिणं बाहुं खड्गेनाजघ्निवान्बली। सौमित्रिरपि सम्प्रेक्ष्य भ्रातरं राघवं स्थितम् ॥०३-२६३-३४॥
tato'sya dakṣiṇaṃ bāhuṃ khaḍgenājaghnivān balī. saumitrir api samprekṣya bhrātaraṃ rāghavaṃ sthitam ॥03-263-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; दक्षिणम् (dakṣiṇam) - right; बाहुम् (bāhum) - arm; खड्गेन (khaḍgena) - with sword; अजघ्निवान् (ajaghnivān) - struck; बली (balī) - the strong (one); सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - Saumitri (son of Sumitra, i.e., Lakṣmaṇa); अपि (api) - also; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - brother; राघवम् (rāghavam) - Rāghava (descendant of Raghu, i.e., Rāma); स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing;]
(Then his right arm with sword struck (him), the strong one. Saumitri also, having seen (his) brother Rāghava standing.)

पुनरभ्याहनत्पार्श्वे तद्रक्षो लक्ष्मणो भृशम्। गतासुरपतद्भूमौ कबन्धः सुमहांस्ततः ॥०३-२६३-३५॥

(Again, Lakṣmaṇa struck that demon violently at the side. Kabandha, very great, with life departed, fell on the ground from there.)

tasya dehād viniḥsṛtya puruṣo divya-darśanaḥ। dadṛśe divam āsthāya divi sūrya iva jvalan ॥03-263-36॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; देहात् (dehāt) - from (the) body; विनिःसृत्य (viniḥsṛtya) - having gone out; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - person; दिव्यदर्शनः (divya-darśanaḥ) - divine-appearing; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - appeared; दिवम् (divam) - to the sky; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having ascended; दिवि (divi) - in the sky; सूर्य (sūrya) - sun; इव (iva) - like; ज्वलन् (jvalan) - shining;]
(Of him from (the) body having gone out, the person, divine in appearance, appeared having ascended to the sky, in the sky shining like the sun.)
After departing from his body, a person of divine appearance ascended to the sky and appeared there, shining like the sun. (03-263-36)
पप्रच्छ रामस्तं वाग्मी कस्त्वं प्रब्रूहि पृच्छतः। कामया किमिदं चित्रमाश्चर्यं प्रतिभाति मे ॥०३-२६३-३७॥
papraccha rāmas taṃ vāgmī kas tvaṃ prabrūhi pṛcchataḥ। kāmayā kim idaṃ citram āścaryaṃ pratibhāti me ॥03-263-37॥

(Rama, eloquent, asked him: "Who are you? Tell (me), (to the one) asking. By desire, what is this wonderful marvel appears to me?" (03-263-37))
Eloquent Rama asked him: "Who are you? Tell (me), who am asking. Through desire, what is this wonderful marvel that appears to me?" (03-263-37)
तस्याचचक्षे गन्धर्वो विश्वावसुरहं नृप। प्राप्तो ब्रह्मानुशापेन योनिं राक्षससेविताम् ॥०३-२६३-३८॥
tasyācacakṣe gandharvo viśvāvasurahaṁ nṛpa। prāpto brahmānuśāpena yoniṁ rākṣasasevitām ॥03-263-38॥
[तस्य (tasya) - to him; आचचक्षे (ācacakṣe) - spoke; गन्धर्वः (gandharvaḥ) - the gandharva; विश्वावसु (viśvāvasu) - Viśvāvasu; अहम् (aham) - I; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; ब्रह्मानुशापेन (brahmānuśāpena) - by Brahmā’s curse; योनिम् (yonim) - womb; राक्षससेविताम् (rākṣasasevitām) - frequented by rāksasas;]
(To him (I) the Gandharva Viśvāvasu, O king, spoke: (I have) attained, by Brahmā’s curse, a womb frequented by rāksasas.)
O king, the Gandharva Viśvāvasu spoke to him: “I have, through Brahmā’s curse, attained a birth among those frequented by rāksasas.” (03-263-38)
रावणेन हृता सीता राज्ञा लङ्कानिवासिना। सुग्रीवमभिगच्छस्व स ते साह्यं करिष्यति ॥०३-२६३-३९॥
rāvaṇena hṛtā sītā rājñā laṅkā-nivāsinā। sugrīvam abhigacchasva sa te sāhyaṁ kariṣyati॥03-263-39॥

(By Rāvaṇa, Sītā was carried off by the king dwelling in Laṅkā. Sugrīva you should approach; he to you help will do.)
Sītā was carried off by Rāvaṇa, the king residing in Laṅkā. You should go to Sugrīva; he will help you. (03-263-39)
एषा पम्पा शिवजला हंसकारण्डवायुता। ऋश्यमूकस्य शैलस्य संनिकर्षे तटाकिनी ॥०३-२६३-४०॥
eṣā pampā śivajalā haṃsakāraṇḍavāyutā। ṛśyamūkasya śailasya saṃnikarṣe taṭākinī॥03-263-40॥
[एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); पम्पा (pampā) - Pampa (proper noun, name of a lake); शिवजला (śivajalā) - auspicious-watered; हंसकारण्डवायुता (haṃsa-kāraṇḍava-āyutā) - endowed with swans and waterfowls; ऋश्यमूकस्य (ṛśyamūkasya) - of Ṛśyamūka; शैलस्य (śailasya) - of the mountain; सन्निकर्षे (saṃnikarṣe) - in the proximity; तटाकिनी (taṭākinī) - lake;]
(This Pampa, auspicious-watered, endowed with swans and waterfowls, in the proximity of Ṛśyamūka mountain, (is) the lake.)
This is the lake Pampa, full of auspicious water and abounding with swans and waterfowls, situated near the mountain Ṛśyamūka. (03-263-40)
संवसत्यत्र सुग्रीवश्चतुर्भिः सचिवैः सह। भ्राता वानरराजस्य वालिनो हेममालिनः ॥०३-२६३-४१॥
saṁvasaty atra sugrīvaś caturbhiḥ sacivaiḥ saha| bhrātā vānararājasya vālino hemamālinaḥ ॥03-263-41॥
[संवसति (saṁvasati) - dwells; अत्र (atra) - here; सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugrīva; चतुर्भिः (caturbhiḥ) - with four; सचिवैः (sacivaiḥ) - ministers; सह (saha) - together with; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; वानरराजस्य (vānararājasya) - of the king of monkeys; वालिनः (vālinaḥ) - of Vāli; हेममालिनः (hemamālinaḥ) - adorned with a golden garland;]
(Here dwells Sugrīva together with four ministers, brother of the king of monkeys, of Vāli, adorned with a golden garland.)
Here resides Sugrīva, along with four ministers, the brother of the king of the monkeys, Vāli, who is adorned with a golden garland. (03-263-41)
एतावच्छक्यमस्माभिर्वक्तुं द्रष्टासि जानकीम्। ध्रुवं वानरराजस्य विदितो रावणालयः ॥०३-२६३-४२॥
etāvacchakyamasmābhirvaktuṃ draṣṭāsi jīnikīm। dhruvaṃ vānararājasya vidito rāvaṇālayaḥ ॥03-263-42॥
[एतावत् (etāvat) - this much; so far; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to say; द्रष्टा (draṣṭā) - you will see; असि (asi) - you are; जानकीम् (jānakīm) - Jānaki; (Sītā); ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; वानरराजस्य (vānararājasya) - of the king of monkeys; विदितः (viditaḥ) - known; रावणालयः (rāvaṇālayaḥ) - abode of Rāvaṇa;]
(This much is possible for us to say: you will see Jānaki. Certainly, to the king of monkeys, Rāvaṇa's abode is known.)
This is as much as we can say: you will see Jānaki (Sītā). Surely, the king of monkeys knows where Rāvaṇa's abode is. (03-263-42)
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्हितो दिव्यः पुरुषः स महाप्रभः। विस्मयं जग्मतुश्चोभौ तौ वीरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥०३-२६३-४३॥
ity-uktvāntarhito divyaḥ puruṣaḥ sa mahāprabhaḥ। vismayaṃ jagmatuś cobhau tau vīrau rāmalakṣmaṇau॥03-263-43॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; अन्तर्हितः (antarhitaḥ) - disappeared; दिव्यः (divyaḥ) - divine; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; स (sa) - he; महाप्रभः (mahāprabhaḥ) - greatly radiant; विस्मयं (vismayaṃ) - wonder; जग्मतुश् (jagmatuḥ) - (they) attained; च (ca) - and; उभौ (ubhau) - both; तौ (tau) - those two; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; रामलक्ष्मणौ (rāmalakṣmaṇau) - Rama and Lakshmana;]
(Thus having spoken, disappeared the divine man, he of great radiance. Astonishment attained also both those two heroes, Rama and Lakshmana.)
After speaking thus, that divine and greatly radiant man vanished. Both heroes, Rama and Lakshmana, were filled with wonder. (03-263-43)
