ततोऽविदूरे नलिनीं प्रभूतकमलोत्पलाम्। सीताहरणदुःखार्तः पम्पां रामः समासदत् ॥०३-२६४-१॥
tato’vidūre nalinīṃ prabhūtakamalotpalām। sītāharaṇaduḥkhārtaḥ pampāṃ rāmaḥ samāsadat॥03-264-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अविदूरे (avidūre) - not far; नलिनीम् (nalinīm) - lotus-pond; प्रभूतकमलोत्पलाम् (prabhūtakamalotpalām) - abundant with lotuses and utpalas; सीता-हरण-दुःख-आर्तः (sītā-haraṇa-duḥkha-ārtaḥ) - afflicted by Sita's abduction sorrow; पम्पाम् (pampām) - Pampa (name of lake); रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; समासदत् (samāsadat) - approached;]
(Then, not far, the lotus-pond abundant with lotuses and utpalas, afflicted by Sita's abduction sorrow, Pampa, Rama approached.)
Then, Rama, afflicted by the sorrow of Sita's abduction, approached the Pampa, a lotus-pond not far away, abundant with lotuses and utpalas. (03-264-1)
मारुतेन सुशीतेन सुखेनामृतगन्धिना। सेव्यमानो वने तस्मिञ्जगाम मनसा प्रियाम् ॥०३-२६४-२॥
mārutena suśītena sukhena amṛtagandhinā। sevya mānaḥ vane tasmiñ jagāma manasā priyām॥03-264-2॥
[मारुतेन (mārutena) - by the breeze; by (the) wind; सुशीतेन (suśītena) - by very cool (wind); सुखेन (sukhena) - by pleasant (wind); अमृतगन्धिना (amṛtagandhinā) - with nectar-like fragrance; सेव्यमानः (sevyamānaḥ) - being served; being enjoyed; वने (vane) - in the forest; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; मनसा (manasā) - with (his) mind; प्रियाम् (priyām) - (to his) beloved;]
(By the very cool, pleasant, nectar-fragrant breeze, being enjoyed in that forest, he went with his mind to (his) beloved.)
Enjoyed by the very cool, pleasant, nectar-scented breeze in that forest, he went to his beloved in his mind. (03-264-2)
विललाप स राजेन्द्रस्तत्र कान्तामनुस्मरन्। कामबाणाभिसन्तप्तः सौमित्रिस्तमथाब्रवीत् ॥०३-२६४-३॥
vilalāpa sa rājendras tatra kāntām anusmaran। kāma-bāṇābhi-santaptaḥ saumitris tam athābravīt ॥03-264-3॥
[विललाप (vilalāpa) - lamented; सः (saḥ) - he; राजेन्द्रः (rājendraḥ) - O king; (lit. best of kings; vocative) तत्र (tatra) - there; कान्ताम् (kāntām) - beloved (wife); अनुस्मरन् (anusmaran) - remembering; काम-बाणाभि-सन्तप्तः (kāma-bāṇābhi-santaptaḥ) - scorched by the arrows of desire; सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa); तम् (tam) - to him; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(He lamented there, O king, remembering (his) beloved, scorched by the arrows of desire; Saumitri then spoke to him.)
The king, lamenting there as he remembered his beloved and was tormented by the arrows of desire, was then addressed by Saumitri. (03-264-3)
न त्वामेवंविधो भावः स्प्रष्टुमर्हति मानद। आत्मवन्तमिव व्याधिः पुरुषं वृद्धशीलिनम् ॥०३-२६४-४॥
na tvām evaṃvidho bhāvaḥ spraṣṭum arhati mānada। ātmavantam iva vyādhiḥ puruṣaṃ vṛddhaśīlinam ॥03-264-4॥
[न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; एवंविधः (evaṃvidhaḥ) - of this kind; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - emotion; स्प्रष्टुम् (spraṣṭum) - to touch; अर्हति (arhati) - is fit; मानद (mānada) - O bestower of honor; आत्मवन्तम् (ātmavantam) - self-possessed; इव (iva) - like; व्याधिः (vyādhiḥ) - disease; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - person; वृद्धशीलिनम् (vṛddhaśīlinam) - of mature character;]
(Not you this kind of emotion to touch is fit, O bestower of honor; just as disease (is not fit) to touch a self-possessed person of mature character.)
Such an emotion is not fit to affect you, O bestower of honor; just as disease cannot touch a self-possessed man of mature character. (03-264-4)
प्रवृत्तिरुपलब्धा ते वैदेह्या रावणस्य च। तां त्वं पुरुषकारेण बुद्ध्या चैवोपपादय ॥०३-२६४-५॥
pravṛttir-upalabdhā te vaidehyā rāvaṇasya ca। tāṁ tvaṁ puruṣakāreṇa buddhyā caiva-upapādaya ॥03-264-5॥
[प्रवृत्तिः (pravṛttiḥ) - activity; उपलब्धा (upalabdhā) - has been obtained; ते (te) - by you; वैदेह्या (vaidehyā) - of Sītā; रावणस्य (rāvaṇasya) - of Rāvaṇa; च (ca) - and; ताम् (tām) - her (that Sītā); त्वम् (tvam) - you; पुरुषकारेण (puruṣakāreṇa) - by effort; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उपपादय (upapādaya) - accomplish;]
(Activity has been obtained by you regarding Sītā and Rāvaṇa. Her, you by effort and intellect indeed accomplish.)
You have obtained information about Sītā and Rāvaṇa; now, accomplish the task concerning her by your effort and intelligence. (03-264-5)
अभिगच्छाव सुग्रीवं शैलस्थं हरिपुङ्गवम्। मयि शिष्ये च भृत्ये च सहाये च समाश्वस ॥०३-२६४-६॥
abhigacchāva sugrīvaṃ śailasthaṃ haripuṅgavam। mayi śiṣye ca bhṛtye ca sahāye ca samāśvasa ॥03-264-6॥
[अभिगच्छाव (abhigacchāva) - let us approach; सुग्रीवं (sugrīvaṃ) - Sugrīva; शैलस्थं (śailastham) - dwelling on the mountain; हरिपुङ्गवम् (haripuṅgavam) - the foremost among the monkeys; मयि (mayi) - in me; शिष्ये (śiṣye) - in the pupil; च (ca) - and; भृत्ये (bhṛtye) - in the servant; च (ca) - and; सहाये (sahāye) - in the ally; च (ca) - and; समाश्वस (samāśvasa) - take heart;]
(Let us approach Sugrīva, dwelling on the mountain, the foremost among the monkeys. In me, in the pupil, and in the servant, and in the ally, and take heart. (03-264-6))
Let us go to Sugrīva, the leader of monkeys who resides on the mountain. Take heart in me, the pupil, the servant, and the ally. (03-264-6)
एवं बहुविधैर्वाक्यैर्लक्ष्मणेन स राघवः। उक्तः प्रकृतिमापेदे कार्ये चानन्तरोऽभवत् ॥०३-२६४-७॥
evaṁ bahuvidhair vākyair lakṣmaṇena sa rāghavaḥ। uktaḥ prakṛtim āpede kārye ca anantaraḥ abhavat॥03-264-7॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - by many kinds; वाक्यैः (vākyaiḥ) - by sentences; लक्ष्मणेन (lakṣmaṇena) - by Lakṣmaṇa; स (sa) - he; राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - Rāghava; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; प्रकृतिम् (prakṛtim) - natural state; आपेदे (āpede) - attained; कार्ये (kārye) - in action; च (ca) - and; अनन्तरः (anantaraḥ) - immediately after; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Thus by many kinds of sentences by Lakṣmaṇa, he Rāghava addressed attained his natural state and in action became immediately after.)
Thus, being addressed in many ways by Lakṣmaṇa, Rāghava regained his natural composure and promptly resumed action. (03-264-7)
निषेव्य वारि पम्पायास्तर्पयित्वा पितॄनपि। प्रतस्थतुरुभौ वीरौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥०३-२६४-८॥
niṣevya vāri pampāyās tarpayitvā pitṝn api। pratastatur ubhau vīrau bhrātarau rāma-lakṣmaṇau ॥03-264-8॥
[निषेव्य (niṣevya) - having performed ritual bath; वारि (vāri) - water; पम्पायाः (pampāyāḥ) - of Pampā (lake); तर्पयित्वा (tarpayitvā) - having satisfied (by offering water); पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; अपि (api) - also; प्रतस्थतुः (pratastatuḥ) - set out; उभौ (ubhau) - both; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; भ्रातरौ (bhrātarau) - brothers; रामलक्ष्मणौ (rāma-lakṣmaṇau) - Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa;]
(Having performed ritual bath in the water of Pampā, and having satisfied also the ancestors, the two heroes, both brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, set out.)
After bathing in the waters of Lake Pampā and offering water to their ancestors, the two heroic brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, set out. (03-264-8)
तावृश्यमूकमभ्येत्य बहुमूलफलं गिरिम्। गिर्यग्रे वानरान्पञ्च वीरौ ददृशतुस्तदा ॥०३-२६४-९॥
tā vṛśyamūkam abhyetya bahu-mūla-phalaṃ girim। giry-agre vānarān pañca vīrau dadṛśatus tadā॥03-264-9॥
[तौ (तौ) (tau) - those two; वृश्यमूकम् (vṛśyamūkam) - Vṛśyamūka (name of mountain); अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; बहुमूलफलं (bahu-mūla-phalam) - having many roots and fruits; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; गिर्यग्रे (girya-agre) - at the top of the mountain; वानरान् (vānarān) - monkeys; पञ्च (pañca) - five; वीरौ (vīrau) - the two heroes; ददृशतुः (dadṛśatuḥ) - saw; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Those two, having approached Vṛśyamūka mountain with many roots and fruits, at the top of the mountain, the five monkeys, the two heroes saw then.)
Then those two heroes, having approached Vṛśyamūka mountain abundant with roots and fruits, saw five monkeys at the summit.
सुग्रीवः प्रेषयामास सचिवं वानरं तयोः। बुद्धिमन्तं हनूमन्तं हिमवन्तमिव स्थितम् ॥०३-२६४-१०॥
sugrīvaḥ preṣayāmāsa sacivaṃ vānaraṃ tayoḥ। buddhimantaṃ hanūmantaṃ himavantamiva sthitam ॥03-264-10॥
[सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugrīva; (proper noun; masculine nominative singular); प्रेषयामास (preṣayāmāsa) - did send; dispatched; सचिवं (sacivaṃ) - minister; counsellor; (accusative singular); वानरं (vānaraṃ) - monkey; (accusative singular); तयोः (tayoḥ) - of the two; between those two; बुद्धिमन्तं (buddhimantaṃ) - intelligent; wise; (accusative singular); हनूमन्तं (hanūmantaṃ) - Hanuman; (proper noun; accusative singular); हिमवन्तमिव (himavantamiva) - like Himavat (the Himalaya); स्थितम् (sthitam) - firm; steadfast; (accusative singular, referring to ‘Hanuman’);]
(Sugrīva did send the minister monkey of the two, intelligent Hanuman, like Himavat, firm.)
Sugrīva sent Hanuman, the wise minister among the two monkeys, who stood firm like the Himalaya. (03-264-10)
तेन सम्भाष्य पूर्वं तौ सुग्रीवमभिजग्मतुः। सख्यं वानरराजेन चक्रे रामस्ततो नृप ॥०३-२६४-११॥
tena sambhāṣya pūrvaṃ tau sugrīvam abhijagmatūḥ. sakhyaṃ vānararājena cakre rāmas tato nṛpa ॥03-264-11॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; सम्भाष्य (sambhāṣya) - having spoken with; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - previously; तौ (tau) - those two; सुग्रीवम् (sugrīvam) - Sugrīva; अभिजग्मतुः (abhijagmatūḥ) - approached; went to; सख्यं (sakhyaṃ) - friendship; वानरराजेन (vānararājena) - by the king of monkeys; चक्रे (cakre) - made; established; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; then; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(By him having spoken previously, those two approached Sugrīva. The friendship with the king of monkeys Rāma then made, O king.)
Having first spoken with him, those two went to Sugrīva. Then Rāma made a friendship with the king of the monkeys, O king. (03-264-11)
तद्वासो दर्शयामासुस्तस्य कार्ये निवेदिते। वानराणां तु यत्सीता ह्रियमाणाभ्यवासृजत् ॥०३-२६४-१२॥
tadvāso darśayāmāsus tasya kārye nivedite. vānarāṇāṃ tu yat sītā hriyamāṇābhy avāsṛjat ॥03-264-12॥
[तद्वासो (tad-vāsaḥ) - that garment; दर्शयामासुः (darśayāmāsuḥ) - they showed; तस्य (tasya) - his; कार्ये (kārye) - in the task; निवेदिते (nivedite) - having been presented; वानराणां (vānarāṇām) - of the monkeys; तु (tu) - but; यत् (yat) - which; सीता (sītā) - Sītā; ह्रियमाणा (hriyamāṇā) - being carried off; अभ्यवासृजत् (abhy avāsṛjat) - threw down toward;]
(That garment they showed, his, in the task having been presented. Of the monkeys, but, which Sītā, being carried off, threw down toward.)
They showed that piece of clothing, which had been submitted as evidence in the investigation, namely, what Sītā threw down to the monkeys as she was being carried away. (03-264-12)
तत्प्रत्ययकरं लब्ध्वा सुग्रीवं प्लवगाधिपम्। पृथिव्यां वानरैश्वर्ये स्वयं रामोऽभ्यषेचयत् ॥०३-२६४-१३॥
tat-pratyayakaraṃ labdhvā sugrīvaṃ plavagādhipam. pṛthivyāṃ vānaraiśvarye svayaṃ rāmo'bhyaṣecayat ॥03-264-13॥
[तत् (tat) - that; प्रत्ययकरम् (pratyayakaram) - cause of confidence; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; सुग्रीवम् (sugrīvam) - Sugrīva; प्लवगाधिपम् (plavagādhipam) - lord of monkeys; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyām) - on earth; वानरैश्वर्ये (vānaraiśvarye) - in the sovereignty over monkeys; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; अभ्यषेचयत् (abhyaṣecayat) - anointed;]
(That cause of confidence having obtained Sugrīva, the lord of monkeys, on earth, in the sovereignty over monkeys, himself Rāma anointed.)
Having obtained that cause of confidence, Rāma himself anointed Sugrīva, the lord of monkeys, as the sovereign of the monkeys on earth. (03-264-13)
प्रतिजज्ञे च काकुत्स्थः समरे वालिनो वधम्। सुग्रीवश्चापि वैदेह्याः पुनरानयनं नृप ॥०३-२६४-१४॥
pratijajñe ca kākutsthaḥ samare vālino vadham। sugrīvaś cāpi vaidehyāḥ punarānayanaṁ nṛpa ॥03-264-14॥
[प्रतिजज्ञे (pratijajñe) - promised; च (ca) - and; काकुत्स्थः (kākutsthaḥ) - the descendant of Kakutstha (Rāma); समरे (samare) - in battle; वालिनो (vālinaḥ) - of Vāli; वधम् (vadham) - slaying; सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugrīva; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वैदेह्याः (vaidehyāḥ) - of Vaidehī (Sītā); पुनरानयनम् (punarānayanam) - bringing back; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(And the descendant of Kakutstha promised the slaying of Vāli in battle; and Sugrīva also (promised) the bringing back of Vaidehī, O king.)
And Rāma, the descendant of Kakutstha, promised to kill Vāli in battle; and Sugrīva also promised to bring back Sītā, O king. (03-264-14)
इत्युक्त्वा समयं कृत्वा विश्वास्य च परस्परम्। अभ्येत्य सर्वे किष्किन्धां तस्थुर्युद्धाभिकाङ्क्षिणः ॥०३-२६४-१५॥
ity uktvā samayaṁ kṛtvā viśvāsya ca parasparam। abhyetya sarve kiṣkindhāṁ tasthur yuddhābhikāṅkṣiṇaḥ॥03-264-15॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; समयं (samayam) - agreement; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; विश्वास्य (viśvāsya) - having trusted; च (ca) - and; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; सर्वे (sarve) - all; किष्किन्धां (kiṣkindhām) - Kiṣkindhā; तस्थुः (tasthuḥ) - stood; युद्धाभिकाङ्क्षिणः (yuddhābhikāṅkṣiṇaḥ) - desiring (for) battle;]
(Thus having said, having made agreement, and having trusted each other, all, having approached Kiṣkindhā, stood desiring battle.)
Having spoken thus, making an agreement and mutually trusting each other, they all approached Kiṣkindhā and stood there eager for battle. (03-264-15)
सुग्रीवः प्राप्य किष्किन्धां ननादौघनिभस्वनः। नास्य तन्ममृषे वाली तं तारा प्रत्यषेधयत् ॥०३-२६४-१६॥
sugrīvaḥ prāpya kiṣkindhāṃ nanādaughanibhasvanaḥ। nāsya tanmamṛṣe vālī taṃ tārā pratyaṣedhayat ॥03-264-16॥
[सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugrīva; (proper noun); प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; किष्किन्धां (kiṣkindhāṃ) - Kiṣkindhā; (proper noun, accusative); ननाद (nanāda) - uttered a loud sound; औघनिभस्वनः (aughanibhasvanaḥ) - like the roar of a flood; न (na) - not; अस्य (asya) - of him; (Sugrīva) तत् (tat) - that; ममृषे (mamṛṣe) - tolerated; (endured) वाली (vālī) - Vālī; (proper noun); तम् (tam) - him; तारा (tārā) - Tārā; (proper noun); प्रत्यषेधयत् (pratyaṣedhayat) - restrained; (tried to stop);]
(Sugrīva, having reached Kiṣkindhā, uttered a loud sound like the roar of a flood; Vālī did not tolerate that of him; Tārā restrained him.)
Sugrīva, upon reaching Kiṣkindhā, gave a loud roar like a torrent; Vālī could not tolerate it, and Tārā tried to restrain him. (03-264-16)
यथा नदति सुग्रीवो बलवानेष वानरः। मन्ये चाश्रयवान्प्राप्तो न त्वं निर्गन्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-२६४-१७॥
yathā nadati sugrīvo balavān eṣa vānaraḥ। manye ca āśrayavān prāptaḥ na tvaṃ nirgantum arhasi॥03-264-17॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; नदति (nadati) - he roars; सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugrīva (proper noun); बलवान् (balavān) - strong; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; वानरः (vānaraḥ) - monkey; मन्ये (manye) - I think; च (ca) - and; आश्रयवान् (āśrayavān) - having support; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has obtained; न (na) - not; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; निर्गन्तुम् (nirgantum) - to go out; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are fit; deserve;]
(Just as Sugrīva, this strong monkey, roars, I think he has obtained support and you are not fit to go out.)
Just as Sugrīva, this strong monkey, is roaring, I believe he has found support, and you should not go out. (03-264-17)
हेममाली ततो वाली तारां ताराधिपाननाम्। प्रोवाच वचनं वाग्मी तां वानरपतिः पतिः ॥०३-२६४-१८॥
hemamālī tato vālī tārāṁ tārādhipānānām। provāca vacanaṁ vāgmī tāṁ vānarapatiḥ patiḥ ॥03-264-18॥
[हेममाली (hemamālī) - Hemamali (name); ततः (tataḥ) - then; वाली (vālī) - Vālī (name); ताराम् (tārām) - Tārā (name; accusative singular); ताराधिपाननाम् (tārādhipānānām) - of the lords of stars (moon); प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; वाग्मी (vāgmī) - eloquent; ताम् (tām) - her; वानरपतिः (vānarapatiḥ) - lord of monkeys; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord;]
(Hemamali then Vālī Tārā the lords of stars (moon) said words eloquent her the lord of monkeys lord.)
Then Vālī, the eloquent lord of monkeys, said these words to Tārā, the wife of the moon-lords, in the presence of Hemamali. (03-264-18)
सर्वभूतरुतज्ञा त्वं पश्य बुद्ध्या समन्विता। केनापाश्रयवान्प्राप्तो ममैष भ्रातृगन्धिकः ॥०३-२६४-१९॥
sarvabhūtarutajñā tvaṁ paśya buddhyā samanvitā। kenāpāśrayavānprāpto mama eṣa bhrātṛgandhikaḥ॥03-264-19॥
[सर्वभूतरुतज्ञा (sarvabhūtarutajñā) - knower of all beings' speech; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; पश्य (paśya) - see; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; समन्विता (samanvitā) - endowed; केन (kena) - by whom; अपाश्रयवान् (apāśrayavān) - having support; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has come; मम (mama) - my; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; भ्रातृगन्धिकः (bhrātṛgandhikaḥ) - brother's scent (one who carries brother's odor);]
(O knower of all beings' speech, you, see, endowed with intellect; by whom, having support, has come, my, this, brother's scent (one who has the scent of my brother).)
O you who understand the speech of all beings, consider with your intellect: by whose support has this one who carries my brother's scent come to me? (03-264-19)
चिन्तयित्वा मुहूर्तं तु तारा ताराधिपप्रभा। पतिमित्यब्रवीत्प्राज्ञा शृणु सर्वं कपीश्वर ॥०३-२६४-२०॥
cintayitvā muhūrtaṃ tu tārā tārādhipa-prabhā. patim iti abravīt prājñā śṛṇu sarvaṃ kapīśvara ॥03-264-20॥
[चिन्तयित्वा (cintayitvā) - having reflected; मुहूर्तं (muhūrtaṃ) - for a moment; तु (tu) - but; तारा (tārā) - Tara; ताराधिपप्रभा (tārādhipa-prabhā) - having the radiance of the moon; पतिम् (patim) - (her) husband; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; प्राज्ञा (prājñā) - the wise one; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; कपीश्वर (kapīśvara) - O lord of monkeys;]
(Having reflected for a moment but Tara, having the radiance of the moon, (her) husband thus said, the wise one: "Listen everything O lord of monkeys." (03-264-20))
But Tara, radiant like the moon and wise, after reflecting for a moment, spoke thus to her husband: "O lord of monkeys, listen to everything." (03-264-20)
हृतदारो महासत्त्वो रामो दशरथात्मजः। तुल्यारिमित्रतां प्राप्तः सुग्रीवेण धनुर्धरः ॥०३-२६४-२१॥
hṛtadāro mahāsattvo rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ। tulyāri-mitratāṃ prāptaḥ sugrīveṇa dhanurdharaḥ ॥03-264-21॥

भ्राता चास्य महाबाहुः सौमित्रिरपराजितः। लक्ष्मणो नाम मेधावी स्थितः कार्यार्थसिद्धये ॥०३-२६४-२२॥

मैन्दश्च द्विविदश्चैव हनूमांश्चानिलात्मजः। जाम्बवानृक्षराजश्च सुग्रीवसचिवाः स्थिताः ॥०३-२६४-२३॥
maindaś ca dvividaś caiva hanūmāṁś cānilātmajaḥ। jāmbavān ṛkṣarājaś ca sugrīva-sacivāḥ sthitāḥ ॥03-264-23॥

सर्व एते महात्मानो बुद्धिमन्तो महाबलाः। अलं तव विनाशाय रामवीर्यव्यपाश्रयात् ॥०३-२६४-२४॥
sarva ete mahātmānaḥ buddhimantaḥ mahābalāḥ। alaṃ tava vināśāya rāmavīryavyapāśrayāt॥03-264-24॥
[सर्व (sarva) - all; एते (ete) - these; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; बुद्धिमन्तः (buddhimantaḥ) - wise ones; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - very strong ones; अलम् (alam) - sufficient; capable; तव (tava) - your; विनाशाय (vināśāya) - for destruction; रामवीर्यव्यपाश्रयात् (rāmavīryavyapāśrayāt) - from reliance on Rāma's strength;]

All these great-souled, wise, and very strong ones are quite capable of bringing about your destruction, relying on Rāma's strength. (03-264-24)
तस्यास्तदाक्षिप्य वचो हितमुक्तं कपीश्वरः। पर्यशङ्कत तामीर्षुः सुग्रीवगतमानसाम् ॥०३-२६४-२५॥
tasyās tad ākṣipya vaco hitam uktaṃ kapīśvaraḥ। paryaśaṅkata tām īrṣuḥ sugrīvagatamānasām ॥03-264-25॥
[तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her (of her); तत् (tat) - that; आक्षिप्य (ākṣipya) - having objected; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; कपीश्वरः (kapīśvaraḥ) - the lord of monkeys; पर्यशङ्कत (paryaśaṅkata) - he suspected; ताम् (tām) - her; ईर्षुः (īrṣuḥ) - jealous (one); सुग्रीवगतमानसाम् (sugrīvagatamānasām) - whose mind was directed towards Sugrīva;]
(Of her, that having objected, words beneficial spoken, the lord of monkeys, he suspected her, the jealous one, whose mind was directed towards Sugrīva.)
After objecting to her beneficial words, the lord of monkeys, jealous and suspecting that her mind was turned toward Sugrīva, doubted her. (03-264-25)
तारां परुषमुक्त्वा स निर्जगाम गुहामुखात्। स्थितं माल्यवतोऽभ्याशे सुग्रीवं सोऽभ्यभाषत ॥०३-२६४-२६॥
tārāṃ paruṣam uktvā sa nirjagāma guhāmukhāt। sthitaṃ mālyavatō'bhyāśe sugrīvaṃ sō'bhyabhāṣata ॥03-264-26॥

(Having spoken harshly to Tara, he departed from the cave's mouth. Standing near Malaya mountain, Sugriva, he addressed.)
After speaking harsh words to Tara, he came out from the mouth of the cave. There, near Mount Malyavat, he addressed Sugriva. (3-264-26)
असकृत्त्वं मया मूढ निर्जितो जीवितप्रियः। मुक्तो ज्ञातिरिति ज्ञात्वा का त्वरा मरणे पुनः ॥०३-२६४-२७॥
asakṛt tvaṁ mayā mūḍha nirjitaḥ jīvitapriyaḥ। mukto jñātir iti jñātvā kā tvarā maraṇe punaḥ॥03-264-27॥
[असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; often; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; मया (mayā) - by me; मूढ (mūḍha) - deluded one; foolish; निर्जितः (nirjitaḥ) - conquered; subdued; जीवितप्रियः (jīvitapriyaḥ) - one attached to life; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - released; set free; ज्ञातिः (jñātiḥ) - kinsman; relative; इति (iti) - thus; so; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; का (kā) - what; which; त्वरा (tvarā) - haste; urgency; मरणे (maraṇe) - in death; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Repeatedly you by me, deluded one, attached to life, have been conquered; knowing thus, 'the kinsman has been released,' what haste is there again in death?)
Deluded one, you—so often attached to life—have been subdued by me; knowing that the kinsman is thus released, what urgency is there again for death? (03-264-27)
इत्युक्तः प्राह सुग्रीवो भ्रातरं हेतुमद्वचः। प्राप्तकालममित्रघ्नो रामं सम्बोधयन्निव ॥०३-२६४-२८॥
ity uktaḥ prāha sugrīvaḥ bhrātaraṃ hetumad-vacaḥ। prāptakālam-amitra-ghnaḥ rāmaṃ sambodhayan-niva ॥03-264-28॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; प्राह (prāha) - said; सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugrīva; भ्रातरं (bhrātaraṃ) - (to his) brother; हेतुमत्-वचः (hetumat-vacaḥ) - reasonable speech; प्राप्त-कालम् (prāpta-kālam) - at the proper time; अमित्र-घ्नः (amitra-ghnaḥ) - destroyer of enemies; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rāma; सम्बोधयन्-इव (sambodhayan-iva) - as if addressing;]
(Thus having been addressed, Sugrīva said to (his) brother reasonable words, at the proper time like a destroyer of enemies addressing Rāma.)
Thus, when addressed, Sugrīva spoke to his brother with well-reasoned words, at the proper time, as though a destroyer of enemies was addressing Rāma. (03-264-28)
हृतदारस्य मे राजन्हृतराज्यस्य च त्वया। किं नु जीवितसामर्थ्यमिति विद्धि समागतम् ॥०३-२६४-२९॥
hṛtadārasya me rājan hṛtarājyasya ca tvayā। kiṁ nu jīvitasāmarthyam iti viddhi samāgatam ॥03-264-29॥
[हृतदारस्य (hṛtadārasya) - of one whose wife has been taken away; मे (me) - my; राजन् (rājan) - O king; हृतराज्यस्य (hṛtarājyasya) - of one whose kingdom has been taken away; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; जीवितसामर्थ्यम् (jīvitasāmarthyam) - power/ability of living; इति (iti) - thus; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; समागतम् (samāgatam) - has come (to pass/occurred);]
(Of one whose wife has been taken away, my, O king, and of one whose kingdom has been taken away by you; what indeed is the power of living—thus, know (that it) has come (to pass).)
O king, I, whose wife and kingdom have been taken away by you, what indeed is the value of life for such a one? Know that this (truth) has come (to pass). (03-264-29)
एवमुक्त्वा बहुविधं ततस्तौ संनिपेततुः। समरे वालिसुग्रीवौ शालतालशिलायुधौ ॥०३-२६४-३०॥
evam uktvā bahuvidhaṁ tataḥ tau saṁnipetatuḥ। samare vāli-sugrīvau śālatāla-śilāyudhau॥03-264-30॥

(Thus having spoken in many ways, then those two both approached; in battle Vālin and Sugrīva, armed with śāla and tāla trees and stones.)
Having spoken thus in many ways, then the two, Vālin and Sugrīva, both approached in battle, armed with śāla and tāla trees and stones. (03-264-30)
उभौ जघ्नतुरन्योन्यमुभौ भूमौ निपेततुः। उभौ ववल्गतुश्चित्रं मुष्टिभिश्च निजघ्नतुः ॥०३-२६४-३१॥
ubhau jaghnatur anyonyam ubhau bhūmau nipetatuḥ। ubhau vavalgatuś citraṃ muṣṭibhiś ca nijaghnatuḥ ॥03-264-31॥
[उभौ (ubhau) - both; जघ्नतु: (jaghnatuḥ) - struck (each other); अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - one another; उभौ (ubhau) - both; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; निपेततुः (nipetatuḥ) - fell down; उभौ (ubhau) - both; ववल्गतु: (vavalgatuḥ) - leaped; चित्रम् (citraṃ) - variously; मुष्टिभिः (muṣṭibhiḥ) - with fists; च (ca) - and; निजघ्नतु: (nijaghnatuḥ) - struck (each other);]
(Both struck one another; both fell on the ground; both leaped variously and with fists struck (each other).)
Both attacked each other; both fell to the ground; both leapt in various ways, and they struck one another with their fists. (03-264-31)
उभौ रुधिरसंसिक्तौ नखदन्तपरिक्षतौ। शुशुभाते तदा वीरौ पुष्पिताविव किंशुकौ ॥०३-२६४-३२॥
ubhau rudhira-saṃsiktau nakha-danta-parikṣatau। śuśubhāte tadā vīrau puṣpitāv iva kiṃśukau॥03-264-32॥
[उभौ (ubhau) - both; रुधिरसंसिक्तौ (rudhira-saṃsiktau) - smeared with blood; नखदन्तपरिक्षतौ (nakha-danta-parikṣatau) - scratched by nails and teeth; शुशुभाते (śuśubhāte) - were shining; तदा (tadā) - then; वीरौ (vīrau) - the heroes; पुष्पिताविव (puṣpitāv iva) - like blossoming; किंशुकौ (kiṃśukau) - kimshuka trees;]
(Both, smeared with blood and scratched by nails and teeth, were shining then, the heroes, like blossoming kimshuka trees.)

न विशेषस्तयोर्युद्धे तदा कश्चन दृश्यते। सुग्रीवस्य तदा मालां हनूमान्कण्ठ आसजत् ॥०३-२६४-३३॥
na viśeṣaḥ tayoḥ yuddhe tadā kaścana dṛśyate. sugrīvasya tadā mālāṁ hanūmān kaṇṭhe āsajat ॥03-264-33॥
[न (na) - not; विशेषः (viśeṣaḥ) - distinction; तयोः (tayoḥ) - between the two; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; तदा (tadā) - then; कश्चन (kaścana) - any; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; सुग्रीवस्य (sugrīvasya) - of Sugrīva; तदा (tadā) - then; मालां (mālāṁ) - garland; हनूमान् (hanūmān) - Hanūmān; कण्ठे (kaṇṭhe) - on (the) neck; आसजत् (āsajat) - attached;]
(Not distinction between the two in battle then any is seen. Of Sugrīva then garland Hanūmān on (the) neck attached.)
No distinction in the battle between the two could be seen then. Then Hanūmān placed a garland on Sugrīva's neck. (03-264-33)
स मालया तदा वीरः शुशुभे कण्ठसक्तया। श्रीमानिव महाशैलो मलयो मेघमालया ॥०३-२६४-३४॥
sa mālayā tadā vīraḥ śuśubhe kaṇṭhasaktayā। śrīmāniva mahāśailo malayo meghamālayā॥03-264-34॥
[स (sa) - he; मालयाः (mālayā) - with Mālā (a woman); तदा (tadā) - then; वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone; कण्ठसक्तया (kaṇṭhasaktayā) - embracing the neck; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - glorious one; इव (iva) - like; महाशैलः (mahāśailaḥ) - great mountain; मलयः (malayaḥ) - Malaya mountain; मेघमालयाः (meghamālayā) - with a garland of clouds;]
(He with Mālā then the hero shone, with (her) embracing the neck; like the glorious one, the great mountain Malaya, with a garland of clouds.)
Then that hero, with Mālā embracing his neck, shone like the glorious Malaya mountain with its garland of clouds. (03-264-34)
कृतचिह्नं तु सुग्रीवं रामो दृष्ट्वा महाधनुः। विचकर्ष धनुःश्रेष्ठं वालिमुद्दिश्य लक्ष्यवत् ॥०३-२६४-३५॥
kṛtacihnaṃ tu sugrīvaṃ rāmo dṛṣṭvā mahādhanuḥ। vicakarṣa dhanuḥśreṣṭhaṃ vālim uddiśya lakṣyavat ॥03-264-35॥
[कृतचिह्नं (kṛtacihnam) - marked (one); तु (tu) - but; सुग्रीवं (sugrīvam) - Sugriva; रामो (rāmaḥ) - Rama (nom. sg.); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; महाधनुः (mahādhanuḥ) - great bow (nom. sg.); विचकर्ष (vicakarṣa) - drew (pulled); धनुःश्रेष्ठं (dhanuḥśreṣṭham) - best bow; वालिमुद्दिश्य (vālim uddiśya) - aiming at Vali; लक्ष्यवत् (lakṣyavat) - as at a target;]
(But Rama, having seen the marked Sugriva, the great bow, drew the best bow aiming at Vali as at a target.)

विस्फारस्तस्य धनुषो यन्त्रस्येव तदा बभौ। वितत्रास तदा वाली शरेणाभिहतो हृदि ॥०३-२६४-३६॥
visphārastasya dhanuṣo yantrasyeva tadā babhau। vitatrāsa tadā vālī śareṇābhihato hṛdi ॥03-264-36॥
[विस्फारः (visphāraḥ) - stretch; (of the bow); तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; धनुषः (dhanuṣaḥ) - of the bow; यन्त्रस्येव (yantrasyeva) - like a machine; like a mechanical device; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; बभौ (babhau) - appeared; shone; वितत्रास (vitatrāsa) - was terrified; trembled; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; वाली (vālī) - Vali (proper noun); शरेण (śareṇa) - by the arrow; अभिहतः (abhihataḥ) - struck; hit; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart;]
(The stretch of his bow then appeared like (that) of a machine; then Vali, struck by the arrow in the heart, was terrified.)
The stretch of his bow at that moment looked like that of a mechanical device; then Vali, struck in the heart by the arrow, was terrified. (03-264-36)
स भिन्नमर्माभिहतो वक्त्राच्छोणितमुद्वमन्। ददर्शावस्थितं राममारात्सौमित्रिणा सह ॥०३-२६४-३७॥
sa bhinnamarmābhihataḥ vaktrāc choṇitam udvamān dadarśa avasthitaṃ rāmam ārāt saumitriṇā saha ॥03-264-37॥
[स (sa) - he; भिन्नमर्माभिहतः (bhinna-marma-abhihataḥ) - struck at vital parts; वक्त्रात् (vaktrāt) - from the mouth; शोणितम् (śoṇitam) - blood; उद्वमन् (udvamān) - vomiting; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; आवस्थितम् (avasthitam) - standing; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma; आरात् (ārāt) - from afar; सौमित्रिणा (saumitriṇā) - with Saumitrī; सह (saha) - together;]
(He, struck at the vital parts, vomiting blood from the mouth, saw Rāma standing together with Saumitrī from afar.)
Struck at his vital points and vomiting blood from his mouth, he saw Rāma standing together with Saumitrī from a distance. (03-264-37)
गर्हयित्वा स काकुत्स्थं पपात भुवि मूर्छितः। तारा ददर्श तं भूमौ तारापतिमिव च्युतम् ॥०३-२६४-३८॥
garhayitvā sa kākutsthaṁ papāta bhuvi mūrcchitaḥ। tārā dadarśa taṁ bhūmau tārāpatim iva cyutam॥03-264-38॥
[गर्हयित्वा (garhayitvā) - having reproached; सः (saḥ) - he; काकुत्स्थम् (kākutstham) - Kākutstha (Rāma, son of Kakutstha); पपात (papāta) - fell; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground; मूर्छितः (mūrcchitaḥ) - unconscious; तारा (tārā) - Tārā; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; तम् (tam) - him; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; तारापतिम् (tārā-patim) - lord of Tārā (her husband); इव (iva) - like; च्युतम् (cyutam) - fallen;]
(Having reproached Kākutstha, he fell on the ground unconscious. Tārā saw him on the ground, like the lord of Tārā (her husband) fallen.)
After reproaching Rāma (Kākutstha), he fell unconscious to the ground. Tārā saw him lying on the earth, resembling her fallen husband. (03-264-38)
हते वालिनि सुग्रीवः किष्किन्धां प्रत्यपद्यत। तां च तारापतिमुखीं तारां निपतितेश्वराम् ॥०३-२६४-३९॥
hate vālini sugrīvaḥ kiṣkindhāṃ pratyapadyata। tāṃ ca tārāpatimukhīṃ tārāṃ nipatiteśvarām ॥03-264-39॥
[हते (hate) - when slain; (having been slain); वालिनि (vālini) - Vāli; upon Vāli; सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugrīva; (subject of the verb); किष्किन्धां (kiṣkindhāṃ) - Kiṣkindhā; (the city); प्रत्यपद्यत (pratyapadyata) - obtained; (re-entered/attained); तां (tāṃ) - her; (that one); च (ca) - and; तारापतिमुखीं (tārāpatimukhīṃ) - headed by Tārā's lord; (having Tārā's husband as foremost); तारां (tārāṃ) - Tārā; (wife of Vāli); निपतितेश्वराम् (nipatiteśvarām) - whose lord was fallen; (whose husband was dead);]
(When Vāli was slain, Sugrīva attained Kiṣkindhā. And that Tārā, headed by Tārā's lord, whose lord had fallen.)
When Vāli was slain, Sugrīva took possession of Kiṣkindhā. And Tārā, whose lord had fallen, (was there) with the foremost ladies headed by Tārā. (03-264-39)
रामस्तु चतुरो मासान्पृष्ठे माल्यवतः शुभे। निवासमकरोद्धीमान्सुग्रीवेणाभ्युपस्थितः ॥०३-२६४-४०॥
rāmas tu caturō māsān pṛṣṭhē mālyavataḥ śubhē। nivāsam akarōd dhīmān sugrīvēṇa abhyupasthitaḥ ॥03-264-40॥

(But Rāma, the wise, together with Sugrīva, after four months, at the auspicious (site) behind Mālyavat, established (his) residence, being accompanied.)
However, Rāma, accompanied by Sugrīva, established his residence for four months at the auspicious place behind Mālyavat. (03-264-40)
रावणोऽपि पुरीं गत्वा लङ्कां कामबलात्कृतः। सीतां निवेशयामास भवने नन्दनोपमे ॥ अशोकवनिकाभ्याशे तापसाश्रमसंनिभे ॥०३-२६४-४१॥
rāvaṇo'pi purīṁ gatvā laṅkāṁ kāmabalātkṛtaḥ। sītāṁ niveśayāmāsa bhavane nandanopame॥ aśokavanikābhyāśe tāpasāśramasaṁnibhe॥03-264-41॥

(Rāvaṇa also, having gone to the city of Laṅkā, compelled by the force of desire, caused Sītā to dwell in a mansion equal to Nandana, near the Aśoka grove, resembling the hermitage of ascetics.)
Rāvaṇa, too, after reaching the city of Laṅkā, driven by the force of his desire, settled Sītā in a mansion comparable to Nandana, near the Aśoka grove that resembled an ascetic's hermitage. (03-264-41)
भर्तृस्मरणतन्वङ्गी तापसीवेषधारिणी। उपवासतपःशीला तत्र सा पृथुलेक्षणा ॥ उवास दुःखवसतीः फलमूलकृताशना ॥०३-२६४-४२॥
bhartṛsmaraṇatanvaṅgī tāpasīveṣadhāriṇī। upavāsatapaḥśīlā tatra sā pṛthulekṣaṇā ॥ uvāsa duḥkhavasatīḥ phalamūlakṛtāśanā ॥03-264-42॥
[भर्तृस्मरणतन्वङ्गी (bhartṛ-smaraṇa-tanvaṅgī) - with body emaciated by remembering her husband; तापसीवेषधारिणी (tāpasī-veṣa-dhāriṇī) - wearing the attire of an ascetic; उपवासतपःशीला (upavāsa-tapaḥ-śīlā) - practicing fasting and penance; तत्र (tatra) - there; सा (sā) - she; पृथुलेक्षणा (pṛthu-īkṣaṇā) - large-eyed; उवास (uvāsa) - lived; दुःखवसतीः (duḥkha-vasatīḥ) - in abodes of suffering; फलमूलकृताशना (phala-mūla-kṛta-āśanā) - sustaining herself on fruits and roots;]
(With body emaciated by remembering her husband, wearing the garb of an ascetic, practicing fasting and penance, there she, large-eyed, lived in abodes of suffering, subsisting on fruits and roots.)
She, with her body made thin by remembrance of her husband, clad in the dress of an ascetic, devoted to fasting and penance, there, that large-eyed woman, lived in suffering places, sustaining herself on fruits and roots. (03-264-42)
दिदेश राक्षसीस्तत्र रक्षणे राक्षसाधिपः। प्रासासिशूलपरशुमुद्गरालातधारिणीः ॥०३-२६४-४३॥
dideśa rākṣasīstatra rakṣaṇe rākṣasādhipaḥ। prāsāsiśūlaparaśumudgarālātadhāriṇīḥ॥03-264-43॥
[दिदेश (dideśa) - sent; राक्षसीः (rākṣasīḥ) - rākṣasī demonesses; तत्र (tatra) - there; रक्षणे (rakṣaṇe) - for protection; राक्षसाधिपः (rākṣasādhipaḥ) - the lord of rākṣasas; प्रास (prāsa) - javelin; असि (asi) - sword; शूल (śūla) - spear; परशु (paraśu) - axe; मुद्गर (mudgara) - mace; आलात (ālata) - bludgeon; धारिणीः (dhāriṇīḥ) - bearing;]
(The lord of rākṣasas sent rākṣasī demonesses there for protection, bearing javelins, swords, spears, axes, maces, and bludgeons.)
The lord of the rākṣasas dispatched rākṣasī demonesses there for guarding, armed with javelins, swords, spears, axes, maces, and bludgeons. (03-264-43)
द्व्यक्षीं त्र्यक्षीं ललाटाक्षीं दीर्घजिह्वामजिह्विकाम्। त्रिस्तनीमेकपादां च त्रिजटामेकलोचनाम् ॥०३-२६४-४४॥
dv-yakṣīṁ try-akṣīṁ lalāṭākṣīṁ dīrgha-jihvām a-jihvikām। tri-stanīm eka-pādāṁ ca tri-jaṭām eka-locanām॥03-264-44॥
[द्व्यक्षीं (dv-yakṣīṁ) - having two eyes; त्र्यक्षीं (try-akṣīṁ) - having three eyes; ललाटाक्षीं (lalāṭākṣīṁ) - having an eye on the forehead; दीर्घजिह्वाम् (dīrgha-jihvām) - having a long tongue; अजिह्विकाम् (a-jihvikām) - having no tongue; त्रिस्तनीम् (tri-stanīm) - having three breasts; एकपादां (eka-pādāṁ) - having one foot; च (ca) - and; त्रिजटाम् (tri-jaṭām) - having three matted locks; एकलोचनाम् (eka-locanām) - having one eye;]
(Having two eyes, having three eyes, having a forehead eye, having a long tongue, having no tongue, having three breasts, having one foot and having three matted locks, having one eye.)
Some had two eyes, some three eyes, some had an eye on their forehead, some had long tongues, others no tongue; some had three breasts, some had only one foot, some had three matted locks, and some had only one eye. (03-264-44)
एताश्चान्याश्च दीप्ताक्ष्यः करभोत्कटमूर्धजाः। परिवार्यासते सीतां दिवारात्रमतन्द्रिताः ॥०३-२६४-४५॥
etāś cānyāś ca dīptākṣyaḥ karabhotkaṭamūrdhajāḥ| parivāryāsate sītāṃ divārātram atandritāḥ ॥03-264-45॥
[एताः (etāḥ) - these (feminine plural); च (ca) - and; अन्याः (anyāḥ) - other (feminine plural); च (ca) - and; दीप्ताक्ष्यः (dīptākṣyaḥ) - having bright eyes; करभोत्कटमूर्धजाः (karabhotkaṭamūrdhajāḥ) - with faces and hair like elephant trunks; परिवार्य (parivārya) - surrounding; आसते (āsate) - sit; सीतां (sītāṃ) - Sītā; दिवारात्रम् (divārātram) - day and night; अतन्द्रिताः (atandritāḥ) - without weariness;]
(These and other bright-eyed ones, with faces and hair like elephant trunks, surrounding Sītā, sit day and night without weariness.)
These and other bright-eyed ones, with faces and hair like elephant trunks, continually surround Sītā, sitting by her day and night without weariness. (03-264-45)
तास्तु तामायतापाङ्गीं पिशाच्यो दारुणस्वनाः। तर्जयन्ति सदा रौद्राः परुषव्यञ्जनाक्षराः ॥०३-२६४-४६॥
tāstu tām āyatāpāṅgīṃ piśācyo dāruṇasvanāḥ। tarjayanti sadā raudrāḥ paruṣavyañjanākṣarāḥ ॥03-264-46॥
[ताः (tāḥ) - those (feminine); तु (tu) - but; indeed; ताम् (tām) - her; आयतापाङ्गीं (āyatāpāṅgīm) - broad-eyed; पिशाच्यः (piśācyaḥ) - the piśācīs; female demons; दारुणस्वनाः (dāruṇasvanāḥ) - harsh-voiced; तर्जयन्ति (tarjayanti) - threaten; terrify; सदा (sadā) - always; रौद्राः (raudrāḥ) - fierce; परुषव्यञ्जनाक्षराः (paruṣavyañjanākṣarāḥ) - with harsh consonant-letters; speaking harsh sounds;]
(Those indeed, her broad-eyed, the piśācīs, harsh-voiced, threaten always, fierce, with harsh consonantal sounds.)
But those piśācīs, fierce and harsh-voiced, always threaten her, the broad-eyed, with rough, harsh-sounding words. (03-264-46)
खादाम पाटयामैनां तिलशः प्रविभज्य ताम्। येयं भर्तारमस्माकमवमन्येह जीवति ॥०३-२६४-४७॥
khādāma pāṭayāma ināṃ tilaśaḥ pravibhajya tām। ye iyaṃ bhartāram asmākam avamanyā iha jīvati॥03-264-47॥
[खादाम् (khādām) - let us eat; पाटयाम (pāṭayām) - let us tear asunder; एनाम् (enām) - this (woman); तिलशः (tilaśaḥ) - piece by piece; प्रविभज्य (pravibhajya) - having divided; ताम् (tām) - her; ये (ye) - who; इयम् (iyam) - this (woman); भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; अवमन्य (avamanya) - despising; इह (iha) - here; जीवति (jīvati) - lives;]
(Let us eat, let us tear asunder this (woman), piece by piece, having divided her; who, this (woman), the husband, our, despising, here, lives.)
Let us eat her, let us tear her apart piece by piece, having divided her—this woman who lives here despising our husband. (03-264-47)
इत्येवं परिभर्त्सन्तीस्त्रास्यमाना पुनः पुनः। भर्तृशोकसमाविष्टा निःश्वस्येदमुवाच ताः ॥०३-२६४-४८॥
ityevaṃ paribhartsantīḥ trāsyamānāḥ punaḥ punaḥ। bhartṛśokasamāviṣṭā niḥśvasyedamuvāca tāḥ ॥03-264-48॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवं (evaṃ) - in this way; परिभर्त्सन्तीः (paribhartsantīḥ) - rebuking (feminine plural accusative); त्रास्यमानाः (trāsyamānāḥ) - being frightened (feminine plural accusative); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; भर्तृशोकसमाविष्टा (bhartṛśokasamāviṣṭā) - overcome by grief for (her) husband (feminine singular nominative); निःश्वस्य (niḥśvasya) - having sighed; इदम् (idam) - this; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ताः (tāḥ) - to them (feminine accusative plural);]
(Thus, in this way, rebuking (them), being frightened, again and again, overcome by grief for her husband, having sighed, this she said to them.)
Thus, repeatedly rebuking them while being frightened, and overwhelmed by grief for her husband, she sighed and spoke this to them. (03-264-48)
आर्याः खादत मां शीघ्रं न मे लोभोऽस्ति जीविते। विना तं पुण्डरीकाक्षं नीलकुञ्चितमूर्धजम् ॥०३-२६४-४९॥
āryāḥ khādata māṃ śīghraṃ na me lobho'sti jīvite। vinā taṃ puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ nīlakuñcitamūrdhajam ॥03-264-49॥
[आर्याः (āryāḥ) - noble ones; खादत (khādata) - eat; मां (māṃ) - me; शीघ्रं (śīghraṃ) - quickly; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; लोभः (lobhaḥ) - desire; अस्ति (asti) - is; जीविते (jīvite) - in life; विना (vinā) - without; तं (taṃ) - him; पुण्डरीकाक्षम् (puṇḍarīkākṣam) - lotus-eyed one; नीलकुञ्चितमूर्धजम् (nīlakuñcitamūrdhajam) - with dark, curly hair;]
(Noble ones, eat me quickly; not to me is desire in life; without him, the lotus-eyed one with dark, curly hair.)

अप्येवाहं निराहारा जीवितप्रियवर्जिता। शोषयिष्यामि गात्राणि व्याली तालगता यथा ॥०३-२६४-५०॥
apyevāhaṃ nirāhārā jīvitapriyavarjitā। śoṣayiṣyāmi gātrāṇi vyālī tālagatā yathā॥03-264-50॥
[अपि (api) - even; एव (eva) - indeed; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; निराहारा (nirāhārā) - without food; जीवितप्रियवर्जिता (jīvitapriyavarjitā) - bereft of the love of life; शोषयिष्यामि (śoṣayiṣyāmi) - I shall waste away; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; व्याली (vyālī) - a female serpent; तालगता (tālagatā) - gone to a tala tree; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(Even indeed I, without food, bereft of the love of life, shall waste away the limbs, just as a female serpent gone to a tala tree.)
Even I, although without food and having lost all desire for life, shall wither my body away, just like a female serpent that has climbed onto a tala tree. (03-264-50)
न त्वन्यमभिगच्छेयं पुमांसं राघवादृते। इति जानीत सत्यं मे क्रियतां यदनन्तरम् ॥०३-२६४-५१॥
na tv anyam abhigaccheyaṁ pumāṁsaṁ rāghavād ṛte। iti jānīta satyaṁ me kriyatāṁ yad anantaram ॥03-264-51॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; अन्यम् (anyam) - other; अभिगच्छेयं (abhigaccheyaṁ) - would approach; पुमांसम् (pumāṁsam) - man; राघवादृते (rāghavādṛte) - except Rāghava (Rāma); इति (iti) - thus; जानीत (jānīta) - know (you all); सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; मे (me) - my; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - may be done; यद् (yad) - what; अनन्तरम् (anantaram) - then, immediately;]
(Not but other would I approach man except Rāghava; thus know truth my may be done what immediately.)
But I would not approach any other man except Rāghava; know this to be my truth. Let what is immediate be done. (03-264-51)
तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राक्षस्यस्ताः खरस्वनाः। आख्यातुं राक्षसेन्द्राय जग्मुस्तत्सर्वमादितः ॥०३-२६४-५२॥
tasyās tad vacanaṃ śrutvā rākṣasyas tāḥ kharasvanāḥ। ākhyātuṃ rākṣasendrāya jagmus tat sarvam āditaḥ ॥03-264-52॥
[तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; तत् (tat) - that; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; राक्षस्यः (rākṣasyaḥ) - rākṣasī-s (female demons); ताः (tāḥ) - those; खरस्वनाः (kharasvanāḥ) - harsh-voiced; आख्यातुम् (ākhyātum) - to report; राक्षसेन्द्राय (rākṣasendrāya) - to the king of rākṣasas; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आदितः (āditaḥ) - from the beginning;]
(Having heard that speech of her, those harsh-voiced rākṣasīs went to report all that from the beginning to the king of rākṣasas.)
Hearing her words, those rākṣasī women with harsh voices went to the king of the rākṣasas to report everything from the beginning. (03-264-52)
गतासु तासु सर्वासु त्रिजटा नाम राक्षसी। सान्त्वयामास वैदेहीं धर्मज्ञा प्रियवादिनी ॥०३-२६४-५३॥
gatāsu tāsu sarvāsu trijaṭā nāma rākṣasī। sāntvayām āsa vaidehīṃ dharmajñā priyavādinī ॥03-264-53॥
[गतासु (gatāsu) - in the (those) who had departed (died); तासु (tāsu) - among those (feminine); सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - in all (of them; feminine); त्रिजटा (trijaṭā) - Trijaṭā; नाम (nāma) - by name; राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - rākṣasī (demoness); सान्त्वयामास (sāntvayām āsa) - consoled; वैदेहीं (vaidehīṃ) - Vaidehī (Sītā); धर्मज्ञा (dharmajñā) - knowing dharma; प्रियवादिनी (priyavādinī) - speaking kind words;]
(In those departed, among all, Trijaṭā by name, the rākṣasī, consoled Vaidehī, knowing dharma, (and) speaking kind words.)
Among all the departed ones there, Trijaṭā by name, a rākṣasī, who knew dharma and spoke kind words, consoled Vaidehī (Sītā). (03-264-53)
सीते वक्ष्यामि ते किञ्चिद्विश्वासं कुरु मे सखि। भयं ते व्येतु वामोरु शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥०३-२६४-५४॥
sīte vakṣyāmi te kiñcid viśvāsaṃ kuru me sakhi। bhayaṃ te vyetu vāmoru śṛṇu cedam vaco mama ॥03-264-54॥
[सीते (sīte) - O Sītā; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall say; ते (te) - to you; किञ्चित् (kiñcid) - something; विश्वासम् (viśvāsaṃ) - confidence; कुरु (kuru) - place; मे (me) - in me; सखि (sakhi) - O friend; भयम् (bhayaṃ) - fear; ते (te) - your; व्येतु (vyetu) - let be dispelled; वामोरु (vāmoru) - O slender-thighed; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; मम (mama) - of mine;]
(O Sītā, I shall say to you something, place confidence in me, O friend. Fear of yours let be dispelled, O slender-thighed, listen and to this speech of mine.)
O Sītā, I wish to say something to you; trust me, my friend. Let your fear be dispelled, O slender-thighed one. Listen to this speech of mine. (03-264-54)
अविन्ध्यो नाम मेधावी वृद्धो राक्षसपुङ्गवः। स रामस्य हितान्वेषी त्वदर्थे हि स मावदत् ॥०३-२६४-५५॥
avindhyo nāma medhāvī vṛddho rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ। sa rāmasya hitānveṣī tvadarthe hi sa māvadat॥03-264-55॥
[अविन्ध्यः (avindhyaḥ) - Avindhya; (proper name); नाम (nāma) - named; (having the name of); मेधावी (medhāvī) - wise; intelligent; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - aged; old; राक्षसपुङ्गवः (rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ) - foremost among rākṣasas; chief rakshasa; सः (saḥ) - he; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; हित-अन्वेषी (hita-anveṣī) - seeker of welfare; who seeks the good; त्वदर्थे (tvad-arthe) - for your sake; for you; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; सः (saḥ) - he; माम् (mām) - to me; अवदत् (avadat) - spoke; said;]
(Avindhya named, wise, aged chief among rākṣasas; he, seeker of Rāma's welfare, indeed for your sake, he to me spoke.)
Avindhya, the wise and aged chief of the rākṣasas, named as such, who seeks Rāma's welfare, indeed spoke to me for your sake. (03-264-55)
सीता मद्वचनाद्वाच्या समाश्वास्य प्रसाद्य च। भर्ता ते कुशली रामो लक्ष्मणानुगतो बली ॥०३-२६४-५६॥
sītā mad-vacanād vācyā samāśvāśya prasādya ca। bhartā te kuśalī rāmo lakṣmaṇānugato balī ॥03-264-56॥
[सीता (sītā) - Sītā; (proper noun, name of Rāma's wife); मद्वचनात् (mad-vacanāt) - from my words; (mad: my, vacanāt: from words); वाच्या (vācyā) - should be spoken to; (to be addressed); समाश्वास्य (samāśvāśya) - having comforted; (sam-ā-śvāśya: having consoled); प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having pleased; (pra-sādya: having pacified); च (ca) - and; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; ते (te) - your; कुशली (kuśalī) - safe; well; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; (proper noun); लक्ष्मणानुगतः (lakṣmaṇānugataḥ) - accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa; बली (balī) - strong; powerful;]
(Sītā should be spoken to from my words, having comforted and having pleased (her), and (say): "Your husband, Rāma, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa, is safe and strong." (03-264-56))
Speak to Sītā on my behalf, comforting and pleasing her, and say: "Your husband Rāma, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa, is well and strong." (03-264-56)
सख्यं वानरराजेन शक्रप्रतिमतेजसा। कृतवान्राघवः श्रीमांस्त्वदर्थे च समुद्यतः ॥०३-२६४-५७॥
sakhyaṃ vānararājena śakrapratimatejasā। kṛtavān rāghavaḥ śrīmāṃs tvadarthe ca samudyataḥ ॥03-264-57॥
[सख्यं (sakhyaṃ) - friendship; वानरराजेन (vānararājena) - by the king of monkeys; शक्रप्रतिमतेजसा (śakrapratimatejasā) - with might equal to Indra; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - has made; राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - Rāma; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - the illustrious; त्वदर्थे (tvadarthe) - for your sake; च (ca) - and; समुद्यतः (samudyataḥ) - has risen (taken action);]
(Friendship by the king of monkeys with might equal to Indra has made Rāma, the illustrious, for your sake and has risen.)
Rāma, the illustrious, has made friendship with the king of monkeys whose power equals Indra, and has also risen to action for your sake. (03-264-57)
मा च तेऽस्तु भयं भीरु रावणाल्लोकगर्हितात्। नलकूबरशापेन रक्षिता ह्यस्यनिन्दिते ॥०३-२६४-५८॥
mā ca te'stu bhayaṃ bhīru rāvaṇāl lokagarhitāt। nalakūbaraśāpena rakṣitā hy asyanindite॥03-264-58॥
[मा (mā) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; भीरु (bhīru) - timid one; रावणात् (rāvaṇāt) - from Rāvaṇa; लोकगर्हितात् (lokagarhitāt) - condemned by the world; नलकूबरशापेन (nalakūbaraśāpena) - by the curse of Nalakūbara; रक्षिता (rakṣitā) - protected; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - by him; अनिन्दिते (anindite) - O blameless one;]
(Not and to you let there be fear, O timid one, from Rāvaṇa, condemned by the world; by the curse of Nalakūbara (you are) indeed protected by him, O blameless one.)
Do not have any fear, O timid one, from Rāvaṇa, condemned by the world; by the curse of Nalakūbara, you are indeed protected by him, O blameless one. (03-264-58)
शप्तो ह्येष पुरा पापो वधूं रम्भां परामृशन्। न शक्तो विवशां नारीमुपैतुमजितेन्द्रियः ॥०३-२६४-५९॥
śapto hyeṣa purā pāpo vadhūṃ rambhāṃ parāmṛśan। na śakto vivaśāṃ nārīmupaitumajitendriyaḥ ॥03-264-59॥
[शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; हि (hi) - indeed; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (man); पुरा (purā) - formerly; पापः (pāpaḥ) - sinful (man); वधूम् (vadhūm) - wife; रम्भाम् (rambhām) - Rambhā; परामृशन् (parāmṛśan) - touching; न (na) - not; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; विवशाम् (vivaśām) - helpless; नारीम् (nārīm) - woman; उपैतुम् (upaitum) - to approach; अजितेन्द्रियः (ajitendriyaḥ) - one whose senses are not subdued;]
(Cursed indeed this (man), formerly sinful, wife Rambhā touching, not able helpless woman to approach, one whose senses are not subdued.)
For this man, formerly sinful and cursed for touching Rambhā, whose senses are not subdued, is not able to approach a helpless woman. (03-264-59)
क्षिप्रमेष्यति ते भर्ता सुग्रीवेणाभिरक्षितः। सौमित्रिसहितो धीमांस्त्वां चेतो मोक्षयिष्यति ॥०३-२६४-६०॥
kṣiprameṣyati te bhartā sugrīveṇābhirakṣitaḥ। saumitrisahito dhīmāṃstvāṃ ceto mokṣayiṣyati ॥03-264-60॥
[क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; एष्यति (eṣyati) - will come; ते (te) - to you; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; सुग्रीवेण (sugrīveṇa) - by Sugrīva; अभिरक्षितः (abhirakṣitaḥ) - protected; सौमित्रि-सहितः (saumitri-sahitaḥ) - accompanied by Saumitri; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; चेतः (cetaḥ) - mind; मोक्षयिष्यति (mokṣayiṣyati) - will free;]
(Quickly will come to you your husband, protected by Sugrīva, accompanied by Saumitri, the wise (one), you your mind will free.)

svapnā hi sumahāghorā dṛṣṭā me'niṣṭadarśanāḥ। vināśāyāsya durbuddheḥ paulastyakulaghātinaḥ ॥03-264-61॥

(Dreams indeed very greatly terrible have been seen by me, having inauspicious visions, for the destruction of this evil-minded destroyer of the Paulastya clan.)

दारुणो ह्येष दुष्टात्मा क्षुद्रकर्मा निशाचरः। स्वभावाच्छीलदोषेण सर्वेषां भयवर्धनः ॥०३-२६४-६२॥
dāruṇo hy eṣa duṣṭātmā kṣudrakarmā niśācaraḥ। svabhāvāc chīladoṣeṇa sarveṣāṃ bhayavardhanaḥ॥03-264-62॥
[दारुणः (dāruṇaḥ) - cruel; harsh; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; एषः (eṣaḥ) - he; this one; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - with a wicked soul; evil-minded; क्षुद्रकर्मा (kṣudrakarmā) - performer of base deeds; doer of petty acts; निशाचरः (niśācaraḥ) - night-wanderer; demon; स्वभावात् (svabhāvāt) - by nature; शीलदोषेण (śīladoṣeṇa) - through defect of character; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; भयवर्धनः (bhayavardhanaḥ) - increaser of fear; one who increases fear;]
(Cruel indeed this one, wicked-souled, doer of base deeds, night-wanderer; by nature, through defect of character, for all, increaser of fear.)

स्पर्धते सर्वदेवैर्यः कालोपहतचेतनः। मया विनाशलिङ्गानि स्वप्ने दृष्टानि तस्य वै ॥०३-२६४-६३॥
spardhate sarva-devair yaḥ kālopahata-cetanaḥ। mayā vināśa-liṅgāni svapne dṛṣṭāni tasya vai ॥03-264-63॥
[स्पर्धते (spardhate) - competes; सर्वदेवैः (sarva-devaiḥ) - with all the gods; यः (yaḥ) - who; कालोपहतचेतनः (kālopahata-cetanaḥ) - whose consciousness is overcome by time; मया (mayā) - by me; विनाशलिङ्गानि (vināśa-liṅgāni) - signs of destruction; स्वप्ने (svapne) - in (a) dream; दृष्टानि (dṛṣṭāni) - were seen; तस्य (tasya) - of him; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(He who, with all the gods, competes, whose consciousness is overcome by time— by me, signs of destruction, in a dream, of him, indeed, were seen.)

तैलाभिषिक्तो विकचो मज्जन्पङ्के दशाननः। असकृत्खरयुक्ते तु रथे नृत्यन्निव स्थितः ॥०३-२६४-६४॥
tailābhiṣikto vikaco majjanpaṅke daśānanaḥ। asakṛtkharayukte tu rathe nṛtyanniva sthitaḥ॥03-264-64॥
[तैलाभिषिक्तः (tailābhiṣiktaḥ) - anointed with oil; विकचः (vikacaḥ) - disheveled; मज्जन् (majjan) - immersed; पङ्के (paṅke) - in mud; दशाननः (daśānanaḥ) - ten-faced (Rāvaṇa); असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; खरयुक्ते (kharayukte) - yoked with asses; तु (tu) - but; रथे (rathe) - on the chariot; नृत्यन् (nṛtyan) - dancing; इव (iva) - as if; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing;]
(Anointed with oil, disheveled, immersed in mud, the ten-faced one, repeatedly on the chariot yoked with asses, but standing as if dancing.)

कुम्भकर्णादयश्चेमे नग्नाः पतितमूर्धजाः। कृष्यन्ते दक्षिणामाशां रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनाः ॥०३-२६४-६५॥
kumbhakarṇādayaś ceme nagnāḥ patitamūrdhajāḥ। kṛṣyante dakṣiṇām āśāṃ raktamālyānulepanāḥ॥03-264-65॥
[कुम्भकर्णादयः (kumbhakarṇādayaḥ) - Kumbhakarṇa and others; च (ca) - and; इमे (ime) - these; नग्नाः (nagnāḥ) - naked; पतितमूर्धजाः (patitamūrdhajāḥ) - with fallen hair; कृष्यन्ते (kṛṣyante) - are dragged; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern; आशाम् (āśām) - direction; रक्तमाल्य (raktamālya) - with red garlands; अनुलेपनाः (anulepanāḥ) - anointed (with ointments);]
(Kumbhakarṇa and others, and these, naked, with fallen hair, are dragged towards the southern direction, with red garlands and anointed.)

śvetātapatraḥ soṣṇīṣaḥ śuklamālyavibhūṣaṇaḥ। śvetaparvatamārūḍha eka eva vibhīṣaṇaḥ ॥03-264-66॥

सचिवाश्चास्य चत्वारः शुक्लमाल्यानुलेपनाः। श्वेतपर्वतमारूढा मोक्ष्यन्तेऽस्मान्महाभयात् ॥०३-२६४-६७॥
sacivāś cāsya catvāraḥ śuklamālyānulepanāḥ। śvetaparvatam ārūḍhā mokṣyante'smān mahābhayāt॥03-264-67॥
[सचिवाः (sacivāḥ) - ministers; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; शुक्लमाल्य (śuklamāḷya) - white garlands; अनुलेपनाः (anulepanāḥ) - ointments; श्वेतपर्वतम् (śvetaparvatam) - white mountain; आारूढाः (ārūḍhāḥ) - having ascended; मोक्ष्यन्ते (mokṣyante) - (they) will liberate; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; महाभयात् (mahābhayāt) - from great danger;]
(Ministers and his, four, with white garlands and ointments, having ascended the white mountain, will liberate us from great danger.)

रामस्यास्त्रेण पृथिवी परिक्षिप्ता ससागरा। यशसा पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां पूरयिष्यति ते पतिः ॥०३-२६४-६८॥
rāmasyāstreṇa pṛthivī parikṣiptā sasāgarā. yaśasā pṛthivīṃ kṛtsnāṃ pūrayiṣyati te patiḥ ॥03-264-68॥
[रामस्यास्त्रेण (rāmasyāstreṇa) - by the weapon of Rāma; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; परिक्षिप्ता (parikṣiptā) - encompassed; ससागरा (sasāgarā) - with the oceans; यशसा (yaśasā) - with glory; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - the earth; कृत्स्नां (kṛtsnāṃ) - entire; पूरयिष्यति (pūrayiṣyati) - will fill; ते (te) - your; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband;]
(By the weapon of Rāma, the earth with the oceans is encompassed. With glory, your husband will fill the entire earth.)
Your husband, with his glory, will fill the whole earth; by the weapon of Rāma, the earth together with the oceans has been encompassed. (03-264-68)
अस्थिसञ्चयमारूढो भुञ्जानो मधुपायसम्। लक्ष्मणश्च मया दृष्टो निरीक्षन्सर्वतोदिशः ॥०३-२६४-६९॥
asthisañcayam ārūḍhaḥ bhuñjānaḥ madhu-pāyasam। lakṣmaṇaś ca mayā dṛṣṭaḥ nirīkṣan sarvato diśaḥ ॥03-264-69॥
[अस्थिसञ्चयम् (asthisañcayam) - heap of bones; आारूढः (ārūḍhaḥ) - mounted upon; भुञ्जानः (bhuñjānaḥ) - eating; मधुपायसम् (madhu-pāyasam) - honey and rice pudding; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakṣmaṇa; च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - by me; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - was seen; नीरीक्षन् (nirīkṣan) - looking around; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions;]
(Mounted upon a heap of bones, eating honey and rice pudding, Lakṣmaṇa also was seen by me, looking all around in all directions.)
I saw Lakṣmaṇa mounted on a heap of bones, eating honey and rice pudding, and looking about in every direction. (03-264-69)
रुदती रुधिरार्द्राङ्गी व्याघ्रेण परिरक्षिता। असकृत्त्वं मया दृष्टा गच्छन्ती दिशमुत्तराम् ॥०३-२६४-७०॥
rudatī rudhirārdraṅgī vyāghreṇa parirakṣitā। asakṛt tvaṃ mayā dṛṣṭā gacchantī diśam uttarām॥03-264-70॥
[रुदती (rudatī) - weeping; रुधिरार्द्राङ्गी (rudhirārdra-aṅgī) - with limbs moistened with blood; व्याघ्रेण (vyāghreṇa) - by the tiger; परिरक्षिता (parirakṣitā) - protected; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मया (mayā) - by me; दृष्टा (dṛṣṭā) - seen; गच्छन्ती (gacchantī) - going; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; उत्तराम् (uttarām) - northern;]
(Weeping, with limbs moistened by blood, protected by the tiger, you have repeatedly been seen by me, going toward the northern direction.)
I have repeatedly seen you, weeping and with limbs moistened with blood, protected by the tiger, going toward the northern direction. (03-264-70)
हर्षमेष्यसि वैदेहि क्षिप्रं भर्तृसमन्विता। राघवेण सह भ्रात्रा सीते त्वमचिरादिव ॥०३-२६४-७१॥
harṣameṣyasi vaidehi kṣipraṃ bhartṛsamanvitā। rāghaveṇa saha bhrātrā sīte tvamacirādiva ॥03-264-71॥
[हर्षम् (harṣam) - joy; एष्यसि (eṣyasi) - you will obtain; वैदेहि (vaidehi) - O Vaidehi; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; भर्तृसमन्विता (bhartṛsamanvitā) - accompanied by (your) husband; राघवेण (rāghaveṇa) - with Rāghava; सह (saha) - together; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - with (his) brother; सीते (sīte) - O Sītā; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अचिरात् (acirāt) - soon; इव (iva) - like;]
(Joy you will obtain, O Vaidehi, quickly, accompanied by your husband; with Rāghava together with (his) brother, O Sītā, you soon like (this).)
O Vaidehi, you will soon experience joy, for you will be reunited with your husband; O Sītā, together with Rāghava and his brother, you will very soon.
इति सा मृगशावाक्षी तच्छ्रुत्वा त्रिजटावचः। बभूवाशावती बाला पुनर्भर्तृसमागमे ॥०३-२६४-७२॥
iti sā mṛgaśāvākṣī tacchrutvā trijaṭāvacaḥ। babhūvāśāvatī bālā punarbhartṛsamāgame ॥03-264-72॥
[इति (iti) - thus; सा (sā) - she; मृगशावाक्षी (mṛgaśāvākṣī) - one with eyes like a young deer; तच्छ्रुत्वा (tacchrutvā) - hearing that; त्रिजटावचः (trijaṭā-vacaḥ) - Trijaṭā's words; बभूव (babhūva) - became; आशावती (āśāvatī) - full of hope; बाला (bālā) - the young woman; पुनः (punar) - again; भर्तृसमागमे (bhartṛ-samāgame) - at meeting with her husband;]
(Thus she, with eyes like a young deer, hearing that Trijaṭā's words, became full of hope, the young woman, again at (the prospect of) meeting with her husband.)
Thus, the young woman with deer-like eyes, upon hearing Trijaṭā's words, became hopeful once again regarding her reunion with her husband. (03-264-72)
यावदभ्यागता रौद्राः पिशाच्यस्ताः सुदारुणाः। ददृशुस्तां त्रिजटया सहासीनां यथा पुरा ॥०३-२६४-७३॥
yāvad abhyāgatā raudrāḥ piśācyas tāḥ sudāruṇāḥ। dadṛśus tāṃ trijaṭayā saha āsīnām yathā purā॥03-264-73॥
[यावत् (yāvat) (yāvat) - as soon as; until; so long as; अभ्यागता (abhyāgatā) (abhyāgatā) - approached; had come; रौद्राः (raudrāḥ) (raudrāḥ) - fierce; terrible (feminine plural); पिशाच्यः (piśācyaḥ) (piśācyaḥ) - female fiends; demonesses; ताः (tāḥ) (tāḥ) - they (feminine plural); सुदारुणाः (sudāruṇāḥ) (sudāruṇāḥ) - very cruel; exceedingly terrible; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; beheld; ताम् (tām) (tām) - her (Sītā); त्रिजटया (trijaṭayā) (trijaṭayā) - with Trijaṭā; सह (saha) (saha) - together with; आसीनाम् (āsīnām) (āsīnām) - sitting; यथा (yathā) (yathā) - just as; as; पुरा (purā) (purā) - before; formerly; previously;]
(As soon as those fierce, exceedingly cruel female fiends had come, they saw her sitting together with Trijaṭā, just as before.)
As soon as those very terrifying demonesses arrived, they saw her seated with Trijaṭā, just as they had in times past. (03-264-73)
