Mārkaṇḍeya said.
ततस्तां भर्तृशोकार्तां दीनां मलिनवाससम्। मणिशेषाभ्यलङ्कारां रुदतीं च पतिव्रताम् ॥०३-२६५-१॥
tatastāṃ bhartṛśokārtāṃ dīnāṃ malinavāsasam। maṇiśeṣābhyalaṅkārāṃ rudatīṃ ca pativratām॥03-265-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; भर्तृशोकार्ताम् (bhartṛśokārtām) - afflicted by grief for her husband; दीनाम् (dīnām) - helpless; मलिनवाससम् (malinavāsasam) - with soiled garments; मणिशेषाभ्यलङ्काराम् (maṇiśeṣābhyalaṅkārām) - adorned only with remaining (few) jewels; रुदतीम् (rudatīm) - weeping; च (ca) - and; पतिव्रताम् (pativratām) - faithful to her husband;]
(Then her, afflicted by grief for (her) husband, helpless, with soiled garments, adorned only with remaining jewels, weeping, and faithful to her husband.)
Then (they saw) her—afflicted by grief for her husband, helpless, clad in soiled garments, wearing only a few remaining jewels, weeping, and faithful to her husband. (03-265-1)
राक्षसीभिरुपास्यन्तीं समासीनां शिलातले। रावणः कामबाणार्तो ददर्शोपससर्प च ॥०३-२६५-२॥
rākṣasībhir upāsyantīṃ samāsīnāṃ śilātale। rāvaṇaḥ kāmabāṇārto dadarśopasasarpa ca॥03-265-2॥

(Being served by the demonesses, sitting on the stone surface, Rāvaṇa, afflicted by the arrows of desire, saw (her) and approached (her) and.)
Rāvaṇa, afflicted by the arrows of desire, saw her being served by the demonesses as she sat on the stone surface, and he drew near to her. (03-265-2)
देवदानवगन्धर्वयक्षकिम्पुरुषैर्युधि। अजितोऽशोकवनिकां ययौ कन्दर्पमोहितः ॥०३-२६५-३॥
devadānavagandharvayakṣakimpuruṣairyudhi। ajito'śokavanikāṃ yayau kandarpamohitaḥ ॥03-265-3॥
[देवदानवगन्धर्वयक्षकिम्पुरुषैः (devadānavagandharvayakṣakimpuruṣaiḥ) - by devas, dānavas, gandharvas, yakṣas, kimpuruṣas; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; अजितः (ajitaḥ) - unconquered; not defeated; अशोकवनिकाम् (aśokavanikām) - to the aśoka grove; ययौ (yayau) - he went; कन्दर्पमोहितः (kandarpamohitaḥ) - deluded by Kandarpa (the god of love);]
(By devas, dānavas, gandharvas, yakṣas, kimpuruṣas in battle, unconquered, to the aśoka grove, he went, deluded by Kandarpa.)
Unconquered in battle by devas, dānavas, gandharvas, yakṣas, and kimpuruṣas, he went to the aśoka grove, deluded by Kandarpa (the god of love). (03-265-3)
दिव्याम्बरधरः श्रीमान्सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलः। विचित्रमाल्यमुकुटो वसन्त इव मूर्तिमान् ॥०३-२६५-४॥
divyāmbaradharaḥ śrīmān sumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalaḥ। vicitramālyamukuṭo vasanta iva mūrtimān ॥03-265-4॥
[दिव्याम्बरधरः (divyāmbaradharaḥ) - one who wears divine garments; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - possessed of prosperity; सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलः (sumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalaḥ) - having well-polished jewel earrings; विचित्रमाल्यमुकुटः (vicitramālyamukuṭaḥ) - having a wonderful garland and crown; वसन्तः (vasantaḥ) - spring; इव (iva) - like; मूर्तिमान् (mūrtimān) - embodied;]
(One who wears divine garments, possessed of prosperity, having well-polished jewel earrings, with a wonderful garland and crown, like embodied Spring.)
Clad in divine garments, radiant with prosperity, adorned with well-polished jewel earrings, and wearing a splendid garland and crown, he appeared like Spring personified. (03-265-4)
स कल्पवृक्षसदृशो यत्नादपि विभूषितः। श्मशानचैत्यद्रुमवद्भूषितोऽपि भयङ्करः ॥०३-२६५-५॥
sa kalpavṛkṣasadṛśo yatnād api vibhūṣitaḥ। śmaśānacaityadrumavad bhūṣito 'pi bhayaṅkaraḥ ॥03-265-5॥
[स (sa) - he; कल्पवृक्षसदृशः (kalpavṛkṣasadṛśaḥ) - like the wish-fulfilling tree; यत्नात् (yatnāt) - by effort; अपि (api) - even; विभूषितः (vibhūṣitaḥ) - adorned; श्मशानचैत्यद्रुमवत् (śmaśānacaityadrumavat) - like a tree (growing) in a funeral ground sanctuary; भूषितः (bhūṣitaḥ) - adorned; अपि (api) - even; भयङ्करः (bhayaṅkaraḥ) - fearful;]
(He, like the wish-fulfilling tree, even when adorned by effort, like a tree in a funeral-ground sanctuary, even adorned, (is) fearful.)
He, though adorned with great effort like a wish-fulfilling tree, is still fearful if he is like a tree in a cremation-ground sanctuary, even when decorated. (03-265-5)
स तस्यास्तनुमध्यायाः समीपे रजनीचरः। ददृशे रोहिणीमेत्य शनैश्चर इव ग्रहः ॥०३-२६५-६॥
sa tasyās tanumadhyāyāḥ samīpe rajanīcaraḥ। dadṛśe rohiṇīm etya śanaiścara iva grahaḥ॥03-265-6॥
[स (sa) - he; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; तनुमध्यायाः (tanumadhyāyāḥ) - of slender-waisted one; समीपे (samīpe) - near; रजनीचरः (rajanīcaraḥ) - night-wanderer; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - was seen; रोहिणीम् (rohiṇīm) - Rohiṇī (star/constellation or personified as lady Rohiṇī); एत्य (etya) - having approached; शनैश्चरः (śanaiścaraḥ) - Saturn; इव (iva) - like; ग्रहः (grahaḥ) - planet;]
(He of her slender-waisted near, the night-wanderer was seen, Rohiṇī having approached, like Saturn the planet.)
He, the night-wanderer, was seen near her, the slender-waisted one, having approached Rohiṇī, like the planet Saturn. (03-265-6)
स तामामन्त्र्य सुश्रोणीं पुष्पकेतुशराहतः। इदमित्यब्रवीद्बालां त्रस्तां रौहीमिवाबलाम् ॥०३-२६५-७॥
sa tām āmantrya suśroṇīṁ puṣpaketuśarāhataḥ। idam ity abravīd bālāṁ trastāṁ rauhīm ivābalām॥03-265-7॥
[स (sa) - he; ताम् (tām) - her; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; सुश्रोणीम् (suśroṇīm) - of beautiful hips; पुष्पकेतु-शर-आहतः (puṣpaketu-śara-āhataḥ) - struck by the arrows of Kāma (god of love); इदम् (idam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; बालाम् (bālām) - the young woman; त्रस्ताम् (trastām) - frightened; रौहीम् (rauhīm) - like a wild cow; इव (iva) - like; अबलाम् (abalām) - powerless;]
(He, having addressed her of beautiful hips, struck by the arrows of Kāma, thus said this to the frightened young woman, powerless like a wild cow.)
Having addressed the beautiful-hipped woman, who was as powerless and frightened as a wild cow struck by the arrows of Kāma, he said these words to her. (03-265-7)
सीते पर्याप्तमेतावत्कृतो भर्तुरनुग्रहः। प्रसादं कुरु तन्वङ्गि क्रियतां परिकर्म ते ॥०३-२६५-८॥
sīte paryāptam etāvat kṛto bhartur anugrahaḥ। prasādaṃ kuru tanvaṅgi kriyatāṃ parikarma te॥03-265-8॥
[सीते (sīte) - O Sītā; पर्याप्तम् (paryāptam) - sufficient; एतावत् (etāvat) - this much; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been done; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; अनुग्रहः (anugrahaḥ) - favor; प्रसादं (prasādam) - grace; कुरु (kuru) - grant; तन्वङ्गि (tanvaṅgi) - O slender-bodied (one); क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let be made; परिकर्म (parikarma) - adornment; ते (te) - for you;]
(O Sītā, sufficient this much has been done, the favor of the husband. Grant grace, O slender-bodied one. Let adornment be done for you.)
O Sītā, this much is enough; your husband's favor has been accomplished. Be gracious, O slender-bodied one, and let your adornment be done. (03-265-8)
भजस्व मां वरारोहे महार्हाभरणाम्बरा। भव मे सर्वनारीणामुत्तमा वरवर्णिनि ॥०३-२६५-९॥
bhajasva māṃ varārohe mahārhābharaṇāmbarā। bhava me sarvanārīṇāmuttamā varavarṇini ॥03-265-9॥
[भजस्व (bhajasva) - worship; मां (māṃ) - me; वरारोहे (varārohe) - O one of excellent thighs; महार्हाभरणाम्बरा (mahārhābharaṇāmbarā) - adorned with very precious ornaments and garments; भव (bhava) - be; मे (me) - for me; सर्वनारीणाम् (sarva-nārīṇām) - of all women; उत्तमा (uttamā) - the best; वरवर्णिनि (varavarṇini) - O lady of excellent complexion;]
(Worship me, O one of excellent thighs, adorned with very precious ornaments and garments; be for me, among all women, the best, O lady of excellent complexion.)
Worship me, O beautiful-thighed one adorned with most precious ornaments and raiment; among all women, be the foremost for me, O woman of exquisite complexion. (03-265-9)
सन्ति मे देवकन्याश्च राजर्षीणां तथाङ्गनाः। सन्ति दानवकन्याश्च दैत्यानां चापि योषितः ॥०३-२६५-१०॥
santi me devakanyāś ca rājarṣīṇāṃ tathāṅganāḥ। santi dānavakanyāś ca daityānāṃ cāpi yoṣitaḥ॥03-265-10॥
[सन्ति (santi) - are (there are); मे (me) - for me; to me; देवकन्याः (devakanyāḥ) - daughters of gods; celestial maidens; च (ca) - and; राजर्षीणां (rājarṣīṇāṃ) - of the royal sages; of kings who are seers; तथा (tathā) - thus; also; अङ्गनाः (aṅganāḥ) - women; ladies; सन्ति (santi) - are (there are); दानवकन्याः (dānavakanyāḥ) - daughters of the Dānavas; च (ca) - and; दैत्यानां (daityānāṃ) - of the Daityas; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; even; योषितः (yoṣitaḥ) - women; females;]
(There are for me devakanyāḥ and of rājarṣis thus women. There are dānavakanyāḥ and of daityas also women.)
There are for me celestial maidens, and women belonging to royal seers as well. There are also daughters of Dānavas, and women of the Daityas. (03-265-10)
चतुर्दश पिशाचानां कोट्यो मे वचने स्थिताः। द्विस्तावत्पुरुषादानां रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम् ॥०३-२६५-११॥
caturdaśa piśācānāṃ koṭyo me vacane sthitāḥ। dvistāvatpuruṣādānāṃ rakṣasāṃ bhīmakarmaṇām॥03-265-11॥
[चतुर्दश (caturdaśa) - fourteen; पिशाचानां (piśācānāṃ) - of piśācas (ghouls); कोट्यः (koṭyaḥ) - crores; मे (me) - of me; वचने (vacane) - at word; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - are positioned; द्वि (dvi) - twice; स्तावत् (stāvat) - just so many; पुरुषादानां (puruṣādānāṃ) - of man-eaters; रक्षसाम् (rakṣasām) - of rākṣasas (demons); भीमकर्मणाम् (bhīmakarmaṇām) - of terrible deeds;]
(Fourteen crores of piśācas are at my word positioned. Twice just so many crores of man-eating rākṣasas of terrible deeds.)

ततो मे त्रिगुणा यक्षा ये मद्वचनकारिणः। केचिदेव धनाध्यक्षं भ्रातरं मे समाश्रिताः ॥०३-२६५-१२॥
tato me triguṇā yakṣā ye mad-vacana-kāriṇaḥ। kecid eva dhana-adhyakṣam bhrātaram me samāśritāḥ॥03-265-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मे (me) - my; त्रिगुणाः (triguṇāḥ) - three-formed; यक्षाः (yakṣāḥ) - yakṣas; ये (ye) - who; मद्वचनकारिणः (mad-vacana-kāriṇaḥ) - acting on my word; केचित् (kecit) - some; एव (eva) - indeed; धनाध्यक्षम् (dhana-adhyakṣam) - lord of wealth; भ्रातरं (bhrātaram) - brother; मे (me) - my; समाश्रिताः (samāśritāḥ) - have taken refuge;]
(Then my three-formed yakṣas, who act on my word, some indeed have taken refuge with my brother, the lord of wealth.)
Then my threefold yakṣas, who follow my command, some have indeed sought refuge with my brother, the lord of wealth. (03-265-12)
गन्धर्वाप्सरसो भद्रे मामापानगतं सदा। उपतिष्ठन्ति वामोरु यथैव भ्रातरं मम ॥०३-२६५-१३॥
gandharvāpsaraso bhadre māmāpānagataṃ sadā। upatiṣṭhanti vāmo-ru yathaiva bhrātaraṃ mama॥03-265-13॥
[गन्धर्व-अप्सरसो (gandharva-apsaraso) - gandharvas and apsarases; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; माम् (mām) - me; अपान-गतं (apāna-gataṃ) - who has gone to the lavatory; सदा (sadā) - always; उपतिष्ठन्ति (upatiṣṭhanti) - attend; वाम-उरु (vāma-uru) - O beautiful-thighed one; यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; भ्रातरं (bhrātaraṃ) - brother; मम (mama) - my;]
(Gandharvas and apsarases, O auspicious one, me who has gone to the lavatory, always attend, O beautiful-thighed one, just as indeed brother my.)
O auspicious lady, Gandharvas and apsarases always attend to me when I have gone to the lavatory, O beautiful-thighed one, just as they would to my brother. (03-265-13)
पुत्रोऽहमपि विप्रर्षेः साक्षाद्विश्रवसो मुनेः। पञ्चमो लोकपालानामिति मे प्रथितं यशः ॥०३-२६५-१४॥
putro'ham api viprarṣeḥ sākṣād viśravaso muneḥ। pañcamo lokapālānām iti me prathitaṃ yaśaḥ॥03-265-14॥
[पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; विप्रर्षेः (viprarṣeḥ) - of the sage among Brāhmaṇas; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; विश्रवसः (viśravasaḥ) - of Viśravas; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage; पञ्चमः (pañcamaḥ) - the fifth; लोकपालानाम् (lokapālānām) - of the protectors of the worlds; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; प्रथितम् (prathitam) - celebrated; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame;]
(Son I also of the brahmin-sage, directly of Viśravas the sage; the fifth of the protectors of the worlds, thus my celebrated fame.)
I am also the son of the Brahmin-sage, directly descended from the sage Viśravas; as the fifth among the protectors of the worlds, thus is my renowned fame. (03-265-14)
दिव्यानि भक्ष्यभोज्यानि पानानि विविधानि च। यथैव त्रिदशेशस्य तथैव मम भामिनि ॥०३-२६५-१५॥
divyāni bhakṣyabhojyāni pānāni vividhāni ca। yathaiva tridaśeśasya tathaiva mama bhāmini॥03-265-15॥
[दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine;; भक्ष्यभोज्यानि (bhakṣya-bhojyāni) - foods to be eaten and to be enjoyed;; पानानि (pānāni) - drinks;; विविधानि (vividhāni) - of various kinds;; च (ca) - and;; यथैव (yathaiva) - just as;; त्रिदशेशस्य (tridaśeśasya) - of the lord of the thirty gods (Indra);; तथैव (tathaiva) - so also;; मम (mama) - my;; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O lovely one;;;]
(Divine eatables and foods to be enjoyed, drinks of various kinds and, just as of the lord of the thirty gods, so also my, O lovely one.)
O lovely one, there are divine foods to be eaten and enjoyed, and various kinds of drinks—just as they are for the lord of the gods, so they are for me. (03-265-15)
क्षीयतां दुष्कृतं कर्म वनवासकृतं तव। भार्या मे भव सुश्रोणि यथा मन्दोदरी तथा ॥०३-२६५-१६॥
kṣīyatāṃ duṣkṛtaṃ karma vanavāsakṛtaṃ tava। bhāryā me bhava suśroṇi yathā mandodarī tathā ॥03-265-16॥
[क्षीयतां (kṣīyatāṃ) - may it be destroyed; दुष्कृतं (duṣkṛtam) - evil deed; कर्म (karma) - action; वनवासकृतं (vanavāsakṛtam) - caused by forest dwelling; तव (tava) - by you; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; मे (me) - my; भव (bhava) - be; सुश्रोणि (suśroṇi) - O lovely-hipped one; यथा (yathā) - as; मन्दोदरी (mandodarī) - Mandodari; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(May the evil deed, the action caused by forest dwelling by you, be destroyed; wife my be, O lovely-hipped one, as Mandodari so.)
May the evil deed, the act caused by your forest dwelling, be destroyed. Become my wife, O lovely-hipped one, just as Mandodari (became a wife). (03-265-16)
इत्युक्ता तेन वैदेही परिवृत्य शुभानना। तृणमन्तरतः कृत्वा तमुवाच निशाचरम् ॥०३-२६५-१७॥
ity-uktā tena vaidehī parivṛtya śubhānanā। tṛṇam antarataḥ kṛtvā tam uvāca niśācaram ॥03-265-17॥
[इति (iti) - thus; ुक्ता (uktā) - addressed; तेन (tena) - by him; वैदेही (vaidehī) - Vaidehi (Sita); परिवृत्य (parivṛtya) - having turned (around); शुभानना (śubhānanā) - beautiful-faced; तृणम् (tṛṇam) - a blade of grass; अन्तरतः (antarataḥ) - in between; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having placed; तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; निशाचरम् (niśācaram) - to the night-wanderer (demon);]
(Thus addressed by him, Vaidehi, having turned (around), beautiful-faced, having placed a blade of grass in between, spoke to him, the night-wanderer.)
Thus addressed by him, Vaidehi (Sita), with a beautiful face, turned away and, having placed a blade of grass between them, spoke to the night-wandering demon. (03-265-17)
अशिवेनातिवामोरूरजस्रं नेत्रवारिणा। स्तनावपतितौ बाला सहितावभिवर्षती ॥ उवाच वाक्यं तं क्षुद्रं वैदेही पतिदेवता ॥०३-२६५-१८॥
aśivenātivāmorūr ajasraṃ netravāriṇā। stanāv apatitau bālā sahitāv abhivarṣatī॥ uvāca vākyaṃ taṃ kṣudraṃ vaidehī patidevatā॥03-265-18॥
[अशिवेन (aśivena) - by misfortune; अतिवामोरू (ativāmorū) - extremely slender-thighed; अजस्रं (ajasraṃ) - continuously; नेत्रवारिणा (netravāriṇā) - with eye water (tears); स्तनौ (stanau) - on breasts; अपतितौ (apatitau) - fallen; बाला (bālā) - the maiden; सहितौ (sahitau) - together; अभिवर्षती (abhivarṣatī) - pouring; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - a statement; तं (taṃ) - that; क्षुद्रं (kṣudraṃ) - paltry; वैदेही (vaidehī) - Vaidehī (Sītā); पतिदेवता (patidevatā) - who regards her husband as god;]
(By misfortune, the extremely slender-thighed maiden, with continuous eye water, fallen on her breasts, together pouring, Vaidehī (the maiden regarding her husband as god) said that paltry statement.)
Due to misfortune, Vaidehī, slender-thighed and devoted to her husband, with unceasing tears streaming onto her breasts, pouring together, uttered that paltry statement. (03-265-18)
असकृद्वदतो वाक्यमीदृशं राक्षसेश्वर। विषादयुक्तमेतत्ते मया श्रुतमभाग्यया ॥०३-२६५-१९॥
asakṛd vadato vākyam īdṛśaṃ rākṣaseśvara। viṣādayuktam etat te mayā śrutam abhāgyayā ॥03-265-19॥
[असकृत् (asakṛt) (asakṛt) - repeatedly; वदतः (vadataḥ) (vadataḥ) - speaking; वाक्यम् (vākyam) (vākyam) - statement; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) (īdṛśam) - such; राक्षस-ईश्वर (rākṣasa-īśvara) (rākṣaseśvara) - O lord of rākṣasas; विषादयुक्तम् (viṣādayuktam) (viṣādayuktam) - joined with despondency; एतत् (etat) (etat) - this; ते (te) (te) - of you; मया (mayā) (mayā) - by me; श्रुतम् (śrutam) (śrutam) - heard; अभाग्यया (abhāgyayā) (abhāgyayā) - by the unfortunate one; ॥०३-२६५-१९॥ ((03-265-19)) -;]
(Repeatedly speaking such a statement, O lord of rākṣasas, joined with despondency, this of you by me, the unfortunate one, has been heard.)
O lord of the rākṣasas, I the unfortunate one have repeatedly heard such despondent words of yours. (03-265-19)
तद्भद्रसुख भद्रं ते मानसं विनिवर्त्यताम्। परदारास्म्यलभ्या च सततं च पतिव्रता ॥०३-२६५-२०॥
tadbhadrasukha bhadraṃ te mānasaṃ vinivartyatām। paradārā'smyalabhyā ca satataṃ ca pativratā॥03-265-20॥
[तद्भद्रसुख (tadbhadrasukha) - therefore, for auspicious happiness; (tat = that, bhadra = auspicious, sukha = happiness); भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspiciousness; ते (te) - to you; मानसं (mānasaṃ) - mind; विनिवर्त्यताम् (vinivartyatām) - let it be turned away; परदारास्मि (paradārāsmi) - I am another's wife; (para = another, dārā = wife, asmi = am); अलभ्या (alabhyā) - unattainable; च (ca) - and; सततं (satataṃ) - always; च (ca) - and; पतिव्रता (pativratā) - devoted to husband;]
(Therefore, for auspicious happiness, auspiciousness to you, let your mind be turned away. I am another's wife, unattainable and always devoted to my husband.)
Therefore, for your own auspicious happiness, turn your mind away. I am another's wife, always unattainable and devoted to my husband. (03-265-20)
न चैवोपयिकी भार्या मानुषी कृपणा तव। विवशां धर्षयित्वा च कां त्वं प्रीतिमवाप्स्यसि ॥०३-२६५-२१॥
na caiva-upayikī bhāryā mānuṣī kṛpaṇā tava। vivaśāṃ dharṣayitvā ca kāṃ tvaṃ prītim avāpsyasi ॥03-265-21॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उपयिकी (upayikī) - suitable (for marriage); भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; मानुषी (mānuṣī) - human (woman); कृपणा (kṛpaṇā) - wretched; तव (tava) - your; विवशां (vivaśām) - helpless; धर्षयित्वा (dharṣayitvā) - having violated; च (ca) - and; कां (kāṃ) - what (kind of); त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - pleasure; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - will obtain;]
(Not indeed suitable wife human wretched your; helpless having violated and what you pleasure will obtain.)
A wretched human woman is not, indeed, a suitable wife for you; having violated a helpless one, what pleasure will you obtain? (03-265-21)
प्रजापतिसमो विप्रो ब्रह्मयोनिः पिता तव। न च पालयसे धर्मं लोकपालसमः कथम् ॥०३-२६५-२२॥
prajāpatisamo vipro brahmayoniḥ pitā tava। na ca pālayase dharmaṃ lokapālasamaḥ katham ॥03-265-22॥
[प्रजापतिसमः (prajāpatisamaḥ) - equal to Prajāpati; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; ब्रह्मयोनिः (brahmayoniḥ) - born from Brahman; पिता (pitā) - father; तव (tava) - your; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पालयसे (pālayase) - you protect; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; लोकपालसमः (lokapālasamaḥ) - equal to a guardian of the world; कथम् (katham) - how;]
(Equal to Prajāpati, the Brāhmaṇa, the origin of Brahman, your father; and (you) do not protect righteousness; equal to the guardian of the world, how?)
The Brāhmaṇa, who is like Prajāpati, the source of Brahman, is your father; how can you, being equal to the guardian of the world, not uphold righteousness? (03-265-22)
भ्रातरं राजराजानं महेश्वरसखं प्रभुम्। धनेश्वरं व्यपदिशन्कथं त्विह न लज्जसे ॥०३-२६५-२३॥
bhrātaraṃ rājarājānaṃ maheśvarasakhaṃ prabhum। dhaneśvaraṃ vyapadiśan kathaṃ tv iha na lajjase ॥03-265-23॥
[भ्रातरं (bhrātaram) - brother; राजराजानं (rājarājānam) - king of kings; महेश्वरसखं (maheśvarasakham) - friend of Maheśvara; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - lord; धनेश्वरं (dhaneśvaram) - lord of wealth; व्यपदिशन् (vyapadiśan) - calling; कथं (katham) - how; त्विह (tv iha) - you here; न (na) - not; लज्जसे (lajjase) - are ashamed;]
(Brother, king of kings, friend of Maheśvara, lord, lord of wealth, calling—how you here not are ashamed.)
How are you not ashamed here, calling the king of kings, brother, friend of Maheśvara, lord, and lord of wealth? (03-265-23)
इत्युक्त्वा प्रारुदत्सीता कम्पयन्ती पयोधरौ। शिरोधरां च तन्वङ्गी मुखं प्रच्छाद्य वाससा ॥०३-२६५-२४॥
ity uktvā prārudat sītā kampayantī payōdharau। śirōdharāṁ ca tanvaṅgī mukhaṁ pracchādya vāsasā॥03-265-24॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; प्रारुदत् (prārudat) - cried out; सीता (sītā) - Sītā; कम्पयन्ती (kampayantī) - shaking; पयोधरौ (payōdharau) - her breasts; शिरोधरां (śirōdharām) - her neck; च (ca) - and; तनु-अङ्गी (tanu-aṅgī) - slender-bodied; मुखं (mukhaṁ) - face; प्रच्छाद्य (pracchādya) - having covered; वाससा (vāsasā) - with cloth;]
(Thus having spoken, Sītā cried out, shaking her breasts; and her slender-bodied neck, having covered her face with a cloth.)
After saying this, Sītā burst into tears, her breasts quivering; the slender-bodied one covered her face and her neck with her garment. (03-265-24)
तस्या रुदत्या भामिन्या दीर्घा वेणी सुसंयता। ददृशे स्वसिता स्निग्धा काली व्यालीव मूर्धनि ॥०३-२६५-२५॥
tasyā rudatyā bhāminyā dīrghā veṇī susaṃyatā। dadṛśe svasitā snigdhā kālī vyālīva mūrdhani ॥03-265-25॥
[तस्या (tasyā) - of her; रुदत्या (rudatyā) - weeping; भामिन्या (bhāminyā) - by the radiant woman; दीर्घा (dīrghā) - long; वेणी (veṇī) - braid; सुसंयता (susaṃyatā) - well-arranged; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - was seen; स्वसिता (svasitā) - shining; स्निग्धा (snigdhā) - glossy; काली (kālī) - black; व्यालीव (vyālīva) - like a serpent; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on (her) head;]
(Of her, weeping, by the radiant woman, long braid well-arranged was seen, shining, glossy, black, like a serpent on (her) head.)
As she wept, the radiant woman's long, well-arranged braid, shining and glossy and black, was seen on her head like a serpent. (03-265-25)
तच्छ्रुत्वा रावणो वाक्यं सीतयोक्तं सुनिष्ठुरम्। प्रत्याख्यातोऽपि दुर्मेधाः पुनरेवाब्रवीद्वचः ॥०३-२६५-२६॥
tacchrutvā rāvaṇo vākyaṃ sītayoktaṃ suniṣṭhuram। pratyākhyāto'pi durmedhāḥ punarevābravīdvacaḥ॥03-265-26॥
[तच्छ्रुत्वा (tac chrutvā) - having heard that; रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; सीता उक्तम् (sītā uktam) - spoken by Sītā; सुनिष्ठुरम् (suniṣṭhuram) - very harsh; प्रत्याख्यातः अपि (pratyākhyātaḥ api) - rejected even; दुर्मेधाः (durmedhāḥ) - of evil mind; पुनः एव (punaḥ eva) - again indeed; अब्रवीत् वचः (abravīt vacaḥ) - spoke words;]
(Having heard that, Rāvaṇa, the very harsh words spoken by Sītā, though rejected even, of evil mind, again indeed spoke words.)
After hearing those very harsh words spoken by Sītā, Rāvaṇa, though rejected, being of evil mind, again spoke further words. (03-265-26)
काममङ्गानि मे सीते दुनोतु मकरध्वजः। न त्वामकामां सुश्रोणीं समेष्ये चारुहासिनीम् ॥०३-२६५-२७॥
kāmamaṅgāni me site dunotu makaradhvajaḥ। na tvāmakāmāṃ suśroṇīṃ sameṣye cāruhāsinīm ॥03-265-27॥
[कामम् (kāmam) - desire; (object of) desire; अङ्गानि (aṅgāni) - limbs; मे (me) - my; सीते (site) - O Sītā; दुनोतु (dunotu) - may afflict; may cause to suffer; मकरध्वजः (makaradhvajaḥ) - Makara-bannered (Kāma, god of love); न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अकामाम् (akāmām) - not desiring (me); सुश्रोणीम् (suśroṇīm) - having beautiful hips; समीष्ये (sameṣye) - will unite (with); चारुहासिनीम् (cāruhāsinīm) - having charming smile;]
(Desire, my limbs, O Sītā, may Makara-bannered (Kāma) afflict. Not you, not desiring (me), with beautiful hips, will I unite (with), having a charming smile.)
O Sītā, if desire afflicts my limbs, let Kāma, the Makara-bannered god, be the cause. But I will not unite with you, you of beautiful hips and charming smile, if you do not desire me. (03-265-27)
किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यत्त्वमद्यापि मानुषम्। आहारभूतमस्माकं राममेवानुरुध्यसे ॥०३-२६५-२८॥
kiṁ nu śakyaṁ mayā kartuṁ yattvamadyāpi mānuṣam। āhārabhūtamasmākaṁ rāma-mevānurudhyase ॥03-265-28॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - possible; मया (mayā) - by me; कर्तुं (kartuṁ) - to do; यत् (yat) - which; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - human-being; आहारभूतम् (āhārabhūtam) - having become food; अस्माकं (asmākam) - for us; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma; एव (eva) - only; अनुरुध्यसे (anurudhyase) - you pursue;]
(What indeed possible by me to do which you even today the human-being, having become food for us, Rāma only you pursue.)
What is there indeed that I cannot do, that you, even today, pursue only Rāma, the human who should have become our food? (03-265-28)
इत्युक्त्वा तामनिन्द्याङ्गीं स राक्षसगणेश्वरः। तत्रैवान्तर्हितो भूत्वा जगामाभिमतां दिशम् ॥०३-२६५-२९॥
ity uktvā tām anindya-aṅgīm saḥ rākṣasa-gaṇa-īśvaraḥ। tatra eva antarhitaḥ bhūtvā jagāma abhimatāṃ diśam॥03-265-29॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ताम् (tām) - her; अनिन्द्याङ्गीं (anindya-aṅgīm) - one with flawless limbs; सः (saḥ) - he; राक्षसगणेश्वरः (rākṣasagaṇa-īśvaraḥ) - lord of the host of rākṣasas; तत्रैव (tatra eva) - just there; अन्तर्हितः (antarhitaḥ) - having become invisible; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; आभिमताम् (ābhimatām) - desired; दिशम् (diśam) - direction;]
(Thus having spoken to her, the one with flawless limbs, he, the lord of the host of rākṣasas, having become invisible just there, having become, he went to the desired direction.)
Having thus spoken to her, who possessed flawless limbs, he, the lord of the rākṣasa hosts, became invisible on the spot and went off in the direction he desired. (03-265-29)
राक्षसीभिः परिवृता वैदेही शोककर्शिता। सेव्यमाना त्रिजटया तत्रैव न्यवसत्तदा ॥०३-२६५-३०॥
rākṣasībhiḥ parivṛtā vaidehī śokakarśitā। sevyamānā trijaṭayā tatraiva nyavasattadā ॥03-265-30॥
[राक्षसीभिः (rākṣasībhiḥ) - by demonesses; परिवृता (parivṛtā) - surrounded; वैदेही (vaidehī) - Vaidehī (Sītā); शोककर्शिता (śokakarśitā) - emaciated by sorrow; सेव्यमाना (sevyamānā) - attended (served); त्रिजटया (trijaṭayā) - by Trijaṭā; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; न्यवसत्तदा (nyavasattadā) - remained then;]
(Vaidehī, surrounded by demonesses, emaciated by sorrow, attended by Trijaṭā, right there remained then.)
Vaidehī (Sītā), emaciated by sorrow and attended by Trijaṭā, remained there at that very place, surrounded by demonesses. (03-265-30)
