Mārkaṇḍeya said.
राघवस्तु ससौमित्रिः सुग्रीवेणाभिपालितः। वसन्माल्यवतः पृष्ठे ददर्श विमलं नभः ॥०३-२६६-१॥
rāghavas tu sasuṃitriḥ sugrīveṇābhipālitaḥ। vasan mālyavataḥ pṛṣṭhe dadarśa vimalaṃ nabhaḥ॥03-266-1॥
[राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - descendant of Raghu; Rama; तु (tu) - but; ससौमित्रिः (sa-saumitriḥ) - with Saumitri; with Lakshmana; सुग्रीवेण (sugrīveṇa) - by Sugriva; अभिपालितः (abhipālitaḥ) - protected; वसन (vasan) - dwelling; माल्यवतः (mālyavataḥ) - of Malyavat (mountain); पृष्ठे (pṛṣṭhe) - on the back; on the slope; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; विमलम् (vimalaṃ) - clear; pure; नभः (nabhaḥ) - sky;]
(Raghava but with Saumitri, protected by Sugriva, dwelling on the back of Malyavat, saw the clear sky.)
But Rama, accompanied by Lakshmana and protected by Sugriva, while dwelling on the slope of Malyavat, saw the clear sky. (03-266-1)
स दृष्ट्वा विमले व्योम्नि निर्मलं शशलक्षणम्। ग्रहनक्षत्रताराभिरनुयातममित्रहा ॥०३-२६६-२॥
sa dṛṣṭvā vimale vyomni nirmalaṃ śaśalakṣaṇam। grahanakṣatratārābhir anuyātam amitrahā ॥03-266-2॥

कुमुदोत्पलपद्मानां गन्धमादाय वायुना। महीधरस्थः शीतेन सहसा प्रतिबोधितः ॥०३-२६६-३॥
kumudotpalapadmānāṃ gandham-ādāya vāyunā। mahīdharasthaḥ śītena sahasā pratibodhitaḥ॥03-266-3॥
[कुमुदोत्पलपद्मानां (kumudotpalapadmānāṃ) - of water-lilies, blue-lotuses, and lotuses; गन्धम् (gandham) - fragrance; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; वायुना (vāyunā) - by the wind; महीधरस्थः (mahīdharasthaḥ) - situated on the mountain; शीतेन (śītena) - by the cold; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; प्रतिबोधितः (pratibodhitaḥ) - awakened;]
(Of water-lilies, blue-lotuses, and lotuses fragrance having taken by the wind, situated on the mountain, by the cold, suddenly awakened.)
Situated on the mountain and suddenly awakened by the cold, the wind, carrying the fragrance of water-lilies, blue-lotuses, and lotuses, stirred. (03-266-3)
प्रभाते लक्ष्मणं वीरमभ्यभाषत दुर्मनाः। सीतां संस्मृत्य धर्मात्मा रुद्धां राक्षसवेश्मनि ॥०३-२६६-४॥
prabhāte lakṣmaṇam vīram abhyabhāṣata durmanāḥ। sītām saṁsmṛtya dharmātmā ruddhām rākṣasaveśmani ॥03-266-4॥
[प्रभाते (prabhāte) - in the morning; लक्ष्मणं (lakṣmaṇam) - Lakṣmaṇa (accusative); वीरम् (vīram) - hero; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - he spoke to; दुर्मनाः (durmanāḥ) - with troubled mind; सीतां (sītām) - Sītā (accusative); संस्मृत्य (saṁsmṛtya) - remembering; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous one; रुद्धाम् (ruddhām) - imprisoned; राक्षसवेश्मनि (rākṣasaveśmani) - in the demon's abode;]
(In the morning, to Lakṣmaṇa, the hero, he spoke, with troubled mind; Sītā, remembering, the righteous one, imprisoned, in the demon's abode.)
In the morning, with a troubled mind, the righteous one remembered Sītā, who was imprisoned in the demon's abode, and spoke to the heroic Lakṣmaṇa. (03-266-4)
गच्छ लक्ष्मण जानीहि किष्किन्धायां कपीश्वरम्। प्रमत्तं ग्राम्यधर्मेषु कृतघ्नं स्वार्थपण्डितम् ॥०३-२६६-५॥
gaccha lakṣmaṇa jānīhi kiṣkindhāyāṃ kapīśvaram। pramattaṃ grāmyadharmeṣu kṛtaghnaṃ svārthapaṇḍitam॥03-266-5॥
[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; लक्ष्मण (lakṣmaṇa) - Lakṣmaṇa; जानीहि (jānīhi) - know; किष्किन्धायां (kiṣkindhāyāṃ) - in Kiṣkindhā; कपीश्वरम् (kapīśvaram) - lord of monkeys; प्रमत्तं (pramattaṃ) - negligent; ग्राम्यधर्मेषु (grāmyadharmeṣu) - in vulgar duties; कृतघ्नं (kṛtaghnam) - ungrateful; स्वार्थपण्डितम् (svārthapaṇḍitam) - wise in self-interest;]
(Go, Lakṣmaṇa, know in Kiṣkindhā the lord of monkeys, negligent, in vulgar duties, ungrateful, wise in self-interest.)
Go, Lakṣmaṇa, and find out in Kiṣkindhā about the lord of monkeys, who is negligent, indulging in base pursuits, ungrateful, and wise only in his own interest. (03-266-5)
योऽसौ कुलाधमो मूढो मया राज्येऽभिषेचितः। सर्ववानरगोपुच्छा यमृक्षाश्च भजन्ति वै ॥०३-२६६-६॥
yo'sau kulādhamo mūḍho mayā rājye'bhiṣecitaḥ। sarva-vānaragopuccā yamṛkṣāś ca bhajanti vai ॥03-266-6॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - this (one); कुल-अधमः (kula-adhamaḥ) - lowest of the family; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - fool; मया (mayā) - by me; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; अभिषेचितः (abhiṣecitaḥ) - anointed; सर्व-वानर-गोपुच्छाः (sarva-vānara-gopuccāḥ) - all the monkey-tailed ones; य-ऋक्षाः (ya-ṛkṣāḥ) - and the bears; च (ca) - and; भजन्ति (bhajanti) - serve; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Who this lowest of the family, fool, by me in the kingdom anointed, all the monkey-tailed ones and the bears indeed serve.)
This one, who is the lowest of the family and a fool, whom I anointed as king, is indeed served by all the monkey-tailed monkeys and bears. (03-266-6)
यदर्थं निहतो वाली मया रघुकुलोद्वह। त्वया सह महाबाहो किष्किन्धोपवने तदा ॥०३-२६६-७॥
yad-arthaṃ nihato vālī mayā raghukulodvaha। tvayā saha mahābāho kiṣkindhopavane tadā ॥03-266-7॥
[यदर्थं (yad-arthaṃ) - for which purpose; निहतः (nihataḥ) - was slain; वाली (vālī) - Vāli; मया (mayā) - by me; रघुकुलोद्वह (raghukulodvaha) - O uplifter of the Raghu lineage; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सह (saha) - with; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; किष्किन्धोपवने (kiṣkindhopa-vane) - in the vicinity of Kiṣkindhā forest; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(For which purpose Vāli was slain by me, O uplifter of the Raghu lineage, by you with O mighty-armed one, in the vicinity of Kiṣkindhā forest then.)
O uplifter of the Raghu lineage, for which purpose Vāli was slain by me with you, O mighty-armed one, in the vicinity of Kiṣkindhā forest at that time. (03-266-7)
कृतघ्नं तमहं मन्ये वानरापसदं भुवि। यो मामेवङ्गतो मूढो न जानीतेऽद्य लक्ष्मण ॥०३-२६६-८॥
kṛtaghnaṃ tam ahaṃ manye vānarāp asadaṃ bhuvi। yo mām evaṃ gataḥ mūḍhaḥ na jānīte 'dya lakṣmaṇa ॥03-266-8॥
[कृतघ्नम् (kṛtaghnam) - an ungrateful one; तम् (tam) - him; अहम् (aham) - I; मन्ये (manye) - consider; वानर-अपसदम् (vānarāpasadam) - the disgrace among monkeys; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; यः (yaḥ) - who; माम् (mām) - me; एवम् गतः (evaṃ gataḥ) - having come thus; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - foolish; न (na) - does not; जानीत (jānīte) - recognize; अद्य (adya) - today; लक्ष्मण (lakṣmaṇa) - O Lakshmana;]
(I consider him (to be) ungrateful, the disgrace among monkeys, on earth; who, having come thus to me, the foolish one, does not recognize (me) today, O Lakshmana.)
O Lakshmana, I consider him to be an ungrateful wretch and a disgrace among monkeys on earth, who, even after coming to me in this manner, does not recognize me today. (03-266-8)
असौ मन्ये न जानीते समयप्रतिपादनम्। कृतोपकारं मां नूनमवमन्याल्पया धिया ॥०३-२६६-९॥
asau manye na jānīte samayapratipādanam। kṛtopakāraṃ māṃ nūnam avamanyā alpayā dhiyā ॥03-266-9॥
[असौ (asau) - that person; मन्ये (manye) - I think; न (na) - not; जानीते (jānīte) - knows; समयप्रतिपादनम् (samayapratipādanam) - fulfillment of an agreement; कृतोपकारम् (kṛtopakāram) - rendered a favor; माम् (mām) - to me; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; अवमन्य (avamanya) - regarding with disdain; अल्पया (alpayā) - with little; धिया (dhiya) - intellect;]
(That person, I think, does not know the fulfillment of an agreement. To me, having rendered a favor, he certainly regards (me) with little intellect, with disdain.)
I think that person does not understand keeping agreements. Having received a favor from me, he certainly looks down on me due to his petty mind. (03-266-9)
यदि तावदनुद्युक्तः शेते कामसुखात्मकः। नेतव्यो वालिमार्गेण सर्वभूतगतिं त्वया ॥०३-२६६-१०॥
yadi tāvad anudyuktaḥ śete kāmasukhātmakaḥ। netavyo vālimārgeṇa sarvabhūtagatiṁ tvayā ॥03-266-10॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; तावत् (tāvat) - then; at that time; अनुद्युक्तः (anudyuktaḥ) - not engaged; inactive; शेते (śete) - he sleeps; lies; कामसुखात्मकः (kāmasukhātmakaḥ) - consisting in pleasure of desire; whose nature is sensual pleasure; नेतव्यः (netavyaḥ) - should be led; to be taken; वालिमार्गेण (vālimārgeṇa) - by Vāli's path; in the manner of Vāli; सर्वभूतगतिं (sarvabhūtagatim) - the course (state) of all beings; the fate of all beings; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(If then he who is not engaged sleeps, whose nature is sensual pleasure, he should be led by you by Vāli's path to the state of all beings.)
If at that time he remains inactive and absorbed in sensual pleasure, you should cause him to meet the fate of all beings by the path of Vāli (i.e., cause his destruction). (03-266-10)
अथापि घटतेऽस्माकमर्थे वानरपुङ्गवः। तमादायैहि काकुत्स्थ त्वरावान्भव मा चिरम् ॥०३-२६६-११॥
athāpi ghaṭate'smākam arthe vānarapuṅgavaḥ। tam ādāya ehi kākutstha tvarāvān bhava mā ciram॥03-266-11॥
[अथापि (athāpi) - however also; yet; but; घटते (ghaṭate) - befits; agrees (with); is proper; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; अर्थे (arthe) - for (the) purpose; in (the) matter; वानरपुङ्गवः (vānarapuṅgavaḥ) - the foremost of monkeys; chief of monkeys; तम् (tam) - him; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; taking; एहि (ehi) - come; काकुत्स्थ (kākutstha) - descendant of Kakutstha; O Kakutstha; त्वरावान् (tvarāvān) - being swift; with haste; भव (bhava) - be; मा (mā) - do not; चिरम् (ciram) - delay; long (time);]
(However also, it befits (is proper) in our matter, the chief of monkeys. Him, having taken, come, O Kakutstha, being swift, be, do not delay long.)
Yet, it is proper in our case that the chief of monkeys (be brought). Therefore, take him and come, O Kakutstha; be swift and do not delay. (03-266-11)
इत्युक्तो लक्ष्मणो भ्रात्रा गुरुवाक्यहिते रतः। प्रतस्थे रुचिरं गृह्य समार्गणगुणं धनुः ॥ किष्किन्धाद्वारमासाद्य प्रविवेशानिवारितः ॥०३-२६६-१२॥
ityukto lakṣmaṇo bhrātrā guruvākyahite rataḥ। pratasthe ruciraṁ gṛhya samārgaṇaguṇaṁ dhanuḥ॥ kiṣkindhādvāram āsādya praviveśānivāritaḥ॥03-266-12॥
[इत्युक्तः (ityuktaḥ) - thus addressed; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakshmana; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - by his brother; गुरुवाक्यहिते (guruvākyahite) - in the benefit of the teacher's (elder's) word; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; प्रतस्थे (pratasthe) - departed; रुचिरं (ruciram) - splendid; गृह्य (gṛhya) - having taken; समार्गणगुणं (samārgaṇaguṇam) - with excellent string for arrows; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; किष्किन्धा-द्वारम् (kiṣkindhādvāram) - Kishkindha (monkey city) gate; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; अनिवारितः (anivāritaḥ) - unhindered;]
(Thus addressed, Lakshmana, by his brother, engaged in the benefit of the teacher's word, departed, having taken splendid bow with excellent string for arrows. Having reached the gate of Kishkindha, he entered unhindered.)
Thus, upon being addressed by his brother and intent upon the benefit of his teacher's command, Lakshmana set forth, taking up his splendid bow fitted with an excellent string. Reaching the gate of Kishkindha, he entered without opposition. (03-266-12)
सक्रोध इति तं मत्वा राजा प्रत्युद्ययौ हरिः। तं सदारो विनीतात्मा सुग्रीवः प्लवगाधिपः ॥ पूजया प्रतिजग्राह प्रीयमाणस्तदर्हया ॥०३-२६६-१३॥
sakrodha iti taṃ matvā rājā pratyudyayau hariḥ। taṃ sadāraḥ vinītātmā sugrīvaḥ plavagādhipaḥ॥ pūjayā pratijagrāha prīyamāṇas tadarhayā॥03-266-13॥
[सक्रोध (sakrodha) - with anger; इति (iti) - thus; तं (taṃ) - him; मत्वा (matvā) - having thought; राजा (rājā) - king; प्रत्युद्ययौ (pratyudyayau) - went forth to meet; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari (the monkey leader); तं (taṃ) - him; सदारः (sadāraḥ) - together with wife; विनीतात्मा (vinītātmā) - of humble spirit; सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugriva; प्लवगाधिपः (plavagādhipaḥ) - lord of monkeys; पूजया (pūjayā) - with worship; प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - received; प्रीयमाणः (prīyamāṇaḥ) - being pleased; तदार्हया (tadarhayā) - with that fitting (honor);]
(Having thought thus, 'with anger,' the king Hari went forth to meet him. Him, together with wife, of humble spirit, Sugriva, lord of monkeys, with worship, received, being pleased, with that fitting (honor). (03-266-13))
Thinking him to be angry, the king Hari went forth to meet him. Sugriva, the lord of monkeys, of humble spirit, along with his wife, received him with the worship befitting him, being pleased. (03-266-13)
तमब्रवीद्रामवचः सौमित्रिरकुतोभयः। स तत्सर्वमशेषेण श्रुत्वा प्रह्वः कृताञ्जलिः ॥०३-२६६-१४॥
tam abravīd rāma-vacaḥ saumitriḥ akutobhayaḥ। sa tat sarvam aśeṣeṇa śrutvā prahvaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ॥03-266-14॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; राम-वचः (rāma-vacaḥ) - Rāma’s words; सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - son of Sumitrā (Lakṣmaṇa); अकुतोभयः (akutobhayaḥ) - one fearing no danger; सः (saḥ) - he; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अशेषेण (aśeṣeṇa) - completely; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; प्रह्वः (prahvaḥ) - humbly; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms;]
(To him, spoke Rāma’s words, Saumitri, one fearing no danger. He, that all completely having heard, humbly with joined palms.)
Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), fearless of any danger, spoke Rāma's words to him. Having listened to all of that completely, he stood with joined palms, bowing humbly. (03-266-14)
सभृत्यदारो राजेन्द्र सुग्रीवो वानराधिपः। इदमाह वचः प्रीतो लक्ष्मणं नरकुञ्जरम् ॥०३-२६६-१५॥
sabhṛtyadāro rājendra sugrīvo vānarādhipaḥ। idam āha vacaḥ prīto lakṣmaṇaṃ narakuñjaram॥03-266-15॥
[सभृत्यदारः (sabhṛtyadāraḥ) - with attendants and wife; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king among kings; सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugriva; वानराधिपः (vānarādhipaḥ) - lord of the monkeys; इदम् (idam) - this; आह (āha) - said; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; लक्ष्मणम् (lakṣmaṇam) - Lakshmana; नरकुञ्जरम् (narakuñjaram) - man-elephant;;]
(With attendants and wife, O king among kings, Sugriva, lord of the monkeys, this said words, pleased, to Lakshmana, man-elephant.)
O king among kings, Sugriva, lord of the monkeys, together with his attendants and wife, being pleased, spoke these words to Lakshmana, the mighty man. (03-266-15)
नास्मि लक्ष्मण दुर्मेधा न कृतघ्नो न निर्घृणः। श्रूयतां यः प्रयत्नो मे सीतापर्येषणे कृतः ॥०३-२६६-१६॥
nāsmi lakṣmaṇa durmedhā na kṛtaghno na nirghṛṇaḥ। śrūyatāṃ yaḥ prayatno me sītāparyeṣaṇe kṛtaḥ॥03-266-16॥
[न (na) - not; अस्मि (asmi) - (I) am; लक्ष्मण (lakṣmaṇa) - O Lakṣmaṇa; दुर्मेधा (durmedhā) - one of wicked understanding; न (na) - not; कृतघ्नः (kṛtaghnaḥ) - ungrateful; न (na) - not; निर्घृणः (nirghṛṇaḥ) - merciless; श्रूयताम् (śrūyatām) - may be heard; यः (yaḥ) - which; प्रयत्नः (prayatnaḥ) - effort; मे (me) - of me; सीता (sītā) - Sītā; पर्येषणे (paryeṣaṇe) - in searching; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made;]
(Not I am, O Lakṣmaṇa, of wicked understanding; not ungrateful; not merciless; let be heard which effort of me in Sītā-searching was made.)
O Lakṣmaṇa, I am not of wicked understanding, nor ungrateful, nor merciless. Hear now the effort I made in searching for Sītā. (03-266-16)
दिशः प्रस्थापिताः सर्वे विनीता हरयो मया। सर्वेषां च कृतः कालो मासेनागमनं पुनः ॥०३-२६६-१७॥
diśaḥ prasthāpitāḥ sarve vinītā harayo mayā। sarveṣāṃ ca kṛtaḥ kālo māsenāgamanaṃ punaḥ॥03-266-17॥
[दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; प्रस्थापिताः (prasthāpitāḥ) - sent forth; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विनीता (vinītā) - disciplined; हरयः (harayaḥ) - monkeys; मया (mayā) - by me; सर्वेषां (sarveṣāṃ) - of all; च (ca) - and; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; मासेन (māsena) - in a month; आगमनं (āgamanam) - return; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Directions all have been sent forth, disciplined monkeys by me; for all also made (is) time, in a month return again.)
I have sent disciplined monkeys in all directions; and a time has been set for all—the return shall be again in a month. (03-266-17)
यैरियं सवना साद्रिः सपुरा सागराम्बरा। विचेतव्या मही वीर सग्रामनगराकरा ॥०३-२६६-१८॥
yair iyaṃ savanā sādr̥ḥ sapurā sāgarāmbarā। vicetavyā mahī vīra sagrāmanagarākarā ॥03-266-18॥
[यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; इयं (iyaṃ) - this (earth); सवना (savanā) - with forests; साद्रिः (sādr̥ḥ) - with mountains; सपुरा (sapurā) - with cities; सागराम्बरा (sāgarāmbarā) - ocean-girt; विचेतव्या (vicetavyā) - to be searched; मही (mahī) - earth; वीर (vīra) - O hero; सग्रामनगराकरा (sagrāmanagarākarā) - having forms of villages and cities;]
(By whom this (earth), with forests, with mountains, with cities, ocean-girt, is to be searched, O hero, having villages and cities as its forms.)
O hero, this earth, bordered by oceans, possessing forests, mountains, and cities, filled with villages and towns, is to be searched by you. (03-266-18)
स मासः पञ्चरात्रेण पूर्णो भवितुमर्हति। ततः श्रोष्यसि रामेण सहितः सुमहत्प्रियम् ॥०३-२६६-१९॥
sa māsaḥ pañcarātreṇa pūrṇo bhavitum arhati। tataḥ śroṣyasi rāmeṇa sahitaḥ sumahatpriyam ॥03-266-19॥
[स (sa) - that; मासः (māsaḥ) - month; पञ्चरात्रेण (pañcarātreṇa) - by five nights; पूर्णः (pūrṇaḥ) - full; भवितुम् (bhavitum) - to become; अर्हति (arhati) - is fit; ततः (tataḥ) - after that; श्रोष्यसि (śroṣyasi) - you will hear; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - with Rāma; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear (thing);]
(That month by five nights full to become is fit. After that you will hear with Rāma together very great dear (thing).)
That month is fit to be completed by five nights. After that, together with Rāma, you will hear something very great and dear. (03-266-19)
इत्युक्तो लक्ष्मणस्तेन वानरेन्द्रेण धीमता। त्यक्त्वा रोषमदीनात्मा सुग्रीवं प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥०३-२६६-२०॥
ity ukto lakṣmaṇas tena vānarendreṇa dhīmatā। tyaktvā roṣam adīn-ātmā sugrīvaṃ pratyapūjayat ॥03-266-20॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakṣmaṇa; तेन (tena) - by him; वानरेन्द्रेण (vānarendreṇa) - by the king of the monkeys; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; रोषम् (roṣam) - anger; अदीनात्मा (adīn-ātmā) - one whose spirit is not downcast; सुग्रीवम् (sugrīvam) - Sugrīva; प्रत्यपूजयत् (pratyapūjayat) - honored (again);]
(Thus addressed Lakṣmaṇa by him, by the king of the monkeys, wise; having abandoned anger, not downcast in spirit, Sugrīva he honored (again).)
Thus spoken to by the wise king of the monkeys, Lakṣmaṇa, having abandoned anger and not being dejected, honored Sugrīva. (03-266-20)
स रामं सहसुग्रीवो माल्यवत्पृष्ठमास्थितम्। अभिगम्योदयं तस्य कार्यस्य प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥०३-२६६-२१॥
sa rāmaṃ saha-sugrīvaḥ mālyavat-pṛṣṭham-āsthitam। abhigamya udayam tasya kāryasya pratyavedayat ॥03-266-21॥
[स (sa) - he; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rāma (accusative singular); सहसुग्रीवः (saha-sugrīvaḥ) - with Sugrīva; माल्यवत्पृष्ठमास्थितम् (mālyavat-pṛṣṭham-āsthitam) - seated on the summit of Mālyavat (mountain); अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; उदयम् (udayam) - the rise (or accomplishment); तस्य (tasya) - of that; कार्यस्य (kāryasya) - of the task; प्रत्यवेदयत् (pratyavedayat) - communicated;]
(He Rāma with Sugrīva, seated on the summit of Mālyavat, having approached, the accomplishment of that task to him communicated.)
He approached Rāma, who was with Sugrīva on the summit of Mālyavat, and communicated to him the accomplishment of that task. (03-266-21)
इत्येवं वानरेन्द्रास्ते समाजग्मुः सहस्रशः। दिशस्तिस्रो विचित्याथ न तु ये दक्षिणां गताः ॥०३-२६६-२२॥
ityevaṁ vānarendrāste samājagmuḥ sahasraśaḥ। diśastisro vicityātha na tu ye dakṣiṇāṁ gatāḥ॥03-266-22॥
[इति एवम् (iti evam) - thus; in this manner; वानर-इन्द्राः (vānarendrāḥ) - monkey-chiefs; leaders of the monkeys; ते (te) - they; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - they assembled; they came together; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; in thousands; दिशः तिस्रः (diśas tisraḥ) - three directions; विचित्य (vicitya) - having searched; अथ (atha) - then; न तु (na tu) - but not; ये (ye) - those who; दक्षिणां गताः (dakṣiṇāṁ gatāḥ) - who had gone to the south;]
(Thus in this manner the monkey-chiefs they assembled in thousands, having searched the three directions, then but not those who had gone to the south.)
Thus, in this manner, the monkey-chiefs came together in thousands, having searched the three directions—except those who had gone to the south. (03-266-22)
आचख्युस्ते तु रामाय महीं सागरमेखलाम्। विचितां न तु वैदेह्या दर्शनं रावणस्य वा ॥०३-२६६-२३॥
ācakhyus te tu rāmāya mahīṁ sāgaramekhalām। vicitāṁ na tu vaidehyā darśanaṁ rāvaṇasya vā ॥03-266-23॥
[आचख्यु: (ācakhyuḥ) - they reported; ते (te) - those (monkeys); तु (tu) - but; रामाय (rāmāya) - to Rāma; महीं (mahīṁ) - the earth; सागरमेखलाम् (sāgaramekhalām) - encircled by the ocean; विचितां (vicitām) - searched; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; वैदेह्या (vaidehyā) - of Vaidehī (Sītā); दर्शनं (darśanam) - sight; रावणस्य (rāvaṇasya) - of Rāvaṇa; वा (vā) - or;]
(They reported, those (monkeys), but to Rāma, the earth encircled by the ocean as searched, not but of Vaidehī the sight, of Rāvaṇa or.)
But those monkeys reported to Rāma that they had searched the whole earth encircled by the ocean, but had not found any sight of Vaidehī or of Rāvaṇa. (03-266-23)
गतास्तु दक्षिणामाशां ये वै वानरपुङ्गवाः। आशावांस्तेषु काकुत्स्थः प्राणानार्तोऽप्यधारयत् ॥०३-२६६-२४॥
gatāstu dakṣiṇām āśāṃ ye vai vānarapuṅgavāḥ। āśāvāṃs teṣu kākutsthaḥ prāṇān ārto'py adhārayat ॥03-266-24॥
[गताः (gatāḥ) - gone; तु (tu) - but; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern; आशाम् (āśām) - direction; ये (ye) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; वानरपुङ्गवाः (vānarapuṅgavāḥ) - leaders of monkeys; आशावान् (āśāvān) - possessed of hope; तेषु (teṣu) - among them; काकुत्स्थः (kākutsthaḥ) - Kākutstha (Rāma); प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; आर्तः (ārtaḥ) - afflicted; अपि (api) - even; अधारयत् (adhārayat) - sustained;]
(But when the leaders of monkeys, who had gone to the southern direction, among them the hopeful Kākutstha, although afflicted, sustained his life-breaths even.)
But when the monkey leaders who had gone to the southern direction returned, among them, Kākutstha (Rāma), though afflicted, still retained hope and sustained his life. (03-266-24)
द्विमासोपरमे काले व्यतीते प्लवगास्ततः। सुग्रीवमभिगम्येदं त्वरिता वाक्यमब्रुवन् ॥०३-२६६-२५॥
dvimāsoparame kāle vyatīte plavagās tataḥ। sugrīvam abhigamya idaṃ tvaritā vākyam abruvan ॥03-266-25॥
[द्विमासोपरमे (dvimāsoparame) - when two months had passed; काले (kāle) - in time; व्यतीते (vyatīte) - having elapsed; प्लवगाः (plavagāḥ) - the monkeys; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सुग्रीवम् (sugrīvam) - to Sugrīva; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - approaching; इदं (idaṃ) - this; त्वरिता (tvaritā) - quickly; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they spoke;]
(When two months in time had elapsed, then the monkeys, approaching Sugrīva, quickly spoke these words.)
After two months had elapsed, the monkeys quickly approached Sugrīva and spoke these words. (03-266-25)
रक्षितं वालिना यत्तत्स्फीतं मधुवनं महत्। त्वया च प्लवगश्रेष्ठ तद्भुङ्क्ते पवनात्मजः ॥०३-२६६-२६॥
rakṣitaṃ vālinā yat tat sphītaṃ madhuvanaṃ mahat। tvayā ca plavagaśreṣṭha tad bhuṅkte pavanātmajaḥ॥03-266-26॥
[रक्षितं (rakṣitam) - protected; वालिना (vālinā) - by Vāli; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; स्फीतं (sphītam) - abundant; मधुवनं (madhuvanam) - Madhuvana (honey-forest); महत् (mahat) - great; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; प्लवगश्रेष्ठ (plavagaśreṣṭha) - O best of the monkeys; तत् (tat) - that; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - enjoys; पवनात्मजः (pavanātmajaḥ) - son of the Wind (Hanuman);]
(That great and abundant Madhuvana, which was protected by Vāli and by you, O best of the monkeys, that the son of the Wind enjoys.)
The son of the Wind (Hanuman) is enjoying that great and abundant honey-forest, Madhuvana, which was formerly protected by Vāli and by you, O best of the monkeys. (03-266-26)
वालिपुत्रोऽङ्गदश्चैव ये चान्ये प्लवगर्षभाः। विचेतुं दक्षिणामाशां राजन्प्रस्थापितास्त्वया ॥०३-२६६-२७॥
vāliputro'ṅgadaścaiva ye cānye plavagarṣabhāḥ| vicetuṃ dakṣiṇām āśāṃ rājan prasthāpitās tvayā ॥03-266-27॥
[वालिपुत्रः (vāliputraḥ) - son of Vāli; अङ्गदः (aṅgadaḥ) - Aṅgada; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; प्लवगर्षभाः (plavagarṣabhāḥ) - best of monkeys; विचेतुम् (vicetum) - to search; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern; आशाम् (āśām) - direction; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रस्थापिताः (prasthāpitāḥ) - sent forth; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Vāli's son Aṅgada and indeed those other best of monkeys, to search the southern direction, O king, were sent forth by you.)
O king, Vāli's son Aṅgada and other foremost of monkeys were sent by you to search in the southern direction. (03-266-27)
तेषां तं प्रणयं श्रुत्वा मेने स कृतकृत्यताम्। कृतार्थानां हि भृत्यानामेतद्भवति चेष्टितम् ॥०३-२६६-२८॥
teṣāṃ taṃ praṇayaṃ śrutvā mene sa kṛtakṛtyatām। kṛtārthānāṃ hi bhṛtyānāṃ etad bhavati ceṣṭitam ॥03-266-28॥
[तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; तं (taṃ) - that; प्रणयं (praṇayam) - affection; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; मेने (mene) - (he) considered; स (sa) - he; कृतकृत्यताम् (kṛtakṛtyatām) - sense of having duties fulfilled; कृतार्थानां (kṛtārthānām) - of those whose purpose is accomplished; हि (hi) - indeed; भृत्यानाम् (bhṛtyānām) - of servants; एतत् (etat) - this; भवति (bhavati) - happens; चेष्टितम् (ceṣṭitam) - conduct;]
(Of them, that affection having heard, (he) considered (himself) fulfilled in all duties. Of those whose purpose is accomplished, indeed, of servants, this is conduct that happens.)
Having heard that affection of theirs, he considered himself to have fulfilled all his duties. For servants whose purpose is accomplished, such conduct indeed occurs. (03-266-28)
स तद्रामाय मेधावी शशंस प्लवगर्षभः। रामश्चाप्यनुमानेन मेने दृष्टां तु मैथिलीम् ॥०३-२६६-२९॥
sa tadrāmāya medhāvī śaśaṁsa plavagarṣabhaḥ। rāmaścāpyanumānena mene dṛṣṭāṁ tu maithilīm॥03-266-29॥
[स (sa) - he; तद् (tad) - that; रामाय (rāmāya) - to Rāma; मेधावी (medhāvī) - the wise; शशंस (śaśaṁsa) - reported; प्लवगर्षभः (plavagarṣabhaḥ) - the foremost of monkeys; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनुमानेन (anumānena) - by inference; मेने (mene) - considered; दृष्टां (dṛṣṭāṁ) - seen; तु (tu) - indeed; मैथिलीम् (maithilīm) - Sītā (the princess of Mithilā);]
(He that to Rāma the wise reported, the foremost of monkeys; and Rāma also by inference considered Sītā indeed as seen.)
The wise foremost of monkeys reported that to Rāma, and Rāma, by inference, also considered Sītā as indeed found. (03-266-29)
हनूमत्प्रमुखाश्चापि विश्रान्तास्ते प्लवङ्गमाः। अभिजग्मुर्हरीन्द्रं तं रामलक्ष्मणसंनिधौ ॥०३-२६६-३०॥
hanūmat-pramukhāś cāpi viśrāntās te plavaṅgamāḥ। abhijagmur harīndraṁ taṁ rāma-lakṣmaṇa-saṁnidhau ॥03-266-30॥
[हनूमत्प्रमुखाः (hanūmat-pramukhāḥ) - headed by Hanumat; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विश्रान्ताः (viśrāntāḥ) - rested; ते (te) - they; प्लवङ्गमाः (plavaṅgamāḥ) - the monkey-leapers; अभिजग्मुः (abhijagmuḥ) - approached; हरीन्द्रम् (harīndram) - the lord of monkeys; तम् (tam) - him; रामलक्ष्मणसंनिधौ (rāma-lakṣmaṇa-saṁnidhau) - in the presence of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa;]
(Hanumat-headed and also rested they, the monkey-leapers, approached that lord of monkeys in the presence of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.)
The monkey-leapers, headed by Hanumat and now rested, approached that lord of monkeys in the presence of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa. (03-266-30)
गतिं च मुखवर्णं च दृष्ट्वा रामो हनूमतः। अगमत्प्रत्ययं भूयो दृष्टा सीतेति भारत ॥०३-२६६-३१॥
gatiṁ ca mukhavarṇaṁ ca dṛṣṭvā rāmo hanūmataḥ। agamatpratyayaṁ bhūyo dṛṣṭā sīteti bhārata॥03-266-31॥
[गतिं (gatiṁ) - movement; च (ca) - and; मुखवर्णं (mukhavarṇaṁ) - facial color; च (ca) - and; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; हनूमतः (hanūmataḥ) - of Hanūmat; अगमत् (agamat) - attained; प्रत्ययम् (pratyayam) - assurance; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; दृष्टा (dṛṣṭā) - seen; सीता (sītā) - Sītā; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Movement and facial color also having seen Rāma of Hanūmat, attained assurance again: "Sītā is seen" thus, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, Rāma, having observed Hanūmat's movement and facial color, once again gained the assurance that "Sītā has been seen." (03-266-31)
हनूमत्प्रमुखास्ते तु वानराः पूर्णमानसाः। प्रणेमुर्विधिवद्रामं सुग्रीवं लक्ष्मणं तथा ॥०३-२६६-३२॥
hanūmat-pramukhās te tu vānarāḥ pūrṇa-mānasāḥ। praṇemur vidhivad rāmaṃ sugrīvam lakṣmaṇam tathā॥03-266-32॥
[हनूमत्प्रमुखाः (hanūmat-pramukhāḥ) - headed by Hanumat (Hanuman); ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; वानराः (vānarāḥ) - the vānaras; पूर्णमानसाः (pūrṇa-mānasāḥ) - with full mind; प्रणेमुः (praṇemur) - they bowed; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; रामम् (rāmaṃ) - Rāma; सुग्रीवम् (sugrīvam) - Sugrīva; लक्ष्मणम् (lakṣmaṇam) - Lakṣmaṇa; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Hanumat-headed they but vānaras with full minds bowed according to rule to Rāma, Sugrīva, and also to Lakṣmaṇa.)
Then those vānaras, headed by Hanuman, with minds fully devoted, bowed respectfully to Rāma, Sugrīva, and Lakṣmaṇa as prescribed. (03-266-32)
तानुवाचागतान्रामः प्रगृह्य सशरं धनुः। अपि मां जीवयिष्यध्वमपि वः कृतकृत्यता ॥०३-२६६-३३॥
tān uvāca āgatān rāmaḥ pragṛhya sa-śaraṁ dhanuḥ। api māṁ jīvayiṣyadhvam api vaḥ kṛtakṛtyatā ॥03-266-33॥
[तान् (tān) - them; उवाच (uvāca) - said; आगतान् (āgatān) - arrived (those who had come); रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken up; सशरं (sa-śaram) - with arrow; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; अपि (api) - whether; माम् (mām) - me; जीवयिष्यध्वम् (jīvayiṣyadhvam) - will you make live (cause to live); अपि (api) - or; वः (vaḥ) - you (plural); कृतकृत्यता (kṛtakṛtyatā) - accomplishment; fulfillment;]
(Them said those who had arrived, Rāma, having taken up bow with arrow: Will you make me live, or is your fulfillment (accomplishment)?)
Rāma, having taken up his bow with an arrow, spoke to those who had arrived: "Will you allow me to live, or have you already accomplished your purpose?" (03-266-33)
अपि राज्यमयोध्यायां कारयिष्याम्यहं पुनः। निहत्य समरे शत्रूनाहृत्य जनकात्मजाम् ॥०३-२६६-३४॥
api rājyam ayodhyāyāṁ kārayiṣyāmy ahaṁ punaḥ। nihatya samare śatrūn āhṛtya janakātmajām ॥03-266-34॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; अयोध्यायाम् (ayodhyāyām) - in Ayodhyā; कारयिष्यामि (kārayiṣyāmi) - I will cause to be performed; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; निहत्य (nihatya) - after having slain; समरे (samare) - in battle; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; आहृत्य (āhṛtya) - after bringing; जनकात्मजाम् (janakātmajām) - daughter of Janaka;]
(Indeed, the kingdom in Ayodhyā I will cause to be performed again, after having slain the enemies in battle, after bringing the daughter of Janaka.)
Indeed, I will again establish the kingdom in Ayodhyā, after slaying the enemies in battle and bringing back the daughter of Janaka. (03-266-34)
अमोक्षयित्वा वैदेहीमहत्वा च रिपून्रणे। हृतदारोऽवधूतश्च नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥०३-२६६-३५॥
amokṣayitvā vaidehīmahatvā ca ripūn raṇe। hṛtadāro'vadhūtaś ca nāhaṃ jīvitum utsahe ॥03-266-35॥
[अमोक्षयित्वा (amokṣayitvā) - having not released; वैदेहीम् (vaidehīm) - Vaidehī (Sītā); अहत्वा (ahatvā) - without killing; च (ca) - and; रिपून् (ripūn) - enemies; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; हृतदारः (hṛtadāraḥ) - one whose wife has been stolen; अवधूतः (avadhūtaḥ) - humiliated; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able;]
(Having not released Vaidehī and not killed the enemies in battle, one whose wife has been stolen and humiliated, and I am not able to live.)
Deprived of my wife, humiliated, having neither rescued Vaidehī nor slain my enemies in battle, I am unable to go on living. (03-266-35)
इत्युक्तवचनं रामं प्रत्युवाचानिलात्मजः। प्रियमाख्यामि ते राम दृष्टा सा जानकी मया ॥०३-२६६-३६॥
ity-uktavacanaṁ rāmaṁ pratyuvācānilātmajaḥ। priyam ākhyāmi te rāma dṛṣṭā sā jānakī mayā॥03-266-36॥
[इति-उक्तवचनम् (iti-uktavacanam) - thus-spoken words; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma (accusative singular); प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; अनिलात्मजः (anilātmajaḥ) - son of Anila (Wind), Hanumān; प्रियं (priyam) - dear (news); आख्यामि (ākhyāmi) - I tell; ते (te) - to you; राम (rāma) - Rāma; दृष्टा (dṛṣṭā) - seen; सा (sā) - she; जानकी (jānakī) - Janakī (Sītā); मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Thus-spoken words Rāma replied son of Anila. Dear (news) I tell to you, Rāma, seen she Janakī by me.)
Hearing these words, Hanumān, the son of the Wind, replied to Rāma: "I bring you joyful news, Rāma—Janakī (Sītā) has been seen by me." (03-266-36)
विचित्य दक्षिणामाशां सपर्वतवनाकराम्। श्रान्ताः काले व्यतीते स्म दृष्टवन्तो महागुहाम् ॥०३-२६६-३७॥
vicitya dakṣiṇām āśāṃ sa-parvata-vana-ākarām। śrāntāḥ kāle vyatīte sma dṛṣṭavanto mahā-guhām॥03-266-37॥
[विचित्य (vicitya) - having searched; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern; आशाम् (āśām) - direction; सपर्वतवनाकराम् (sa-parvata-vana-ākarām) - with mountains and forest-mines; श्रान्ताः (śrāntāḥ) - tired; काले (kāle) - as time; व्यतीते (vyatīte) - having elapsed; स्म (sma) - indeed; दृष्टवन्तः (dṛṣṭavantaḥ) - (they) saw; महागुहाम् (mahā-guhām) - great cave;]
(Having searched the southern direction with mountains and forest-mines, tired, as time elapsed indeed, (they) saw a great cave.)
After thoroughly searching the southern direction, which was full of mountains and forest mines, and having become tired as time passed, they indeed saw a great cave. (03-266-37)
प्रविशामो वयं तां तु बहुयोजनमायताम्। अन्धकारां सुविपिनां गहनां कीटसेविताम् ॥०३-२६६-३८॥
praviśāmo vayaṃ tāṃ tu bahuyojanamāyatām। andhakārāṃ suvipināṃ gahanāṃ kīṭasevitām॥03-266-38॥
[प्रविशामो (praviśāmaḥ) - we shall enter; वयम् (vayam) - we; ताम् (tām) - that; तु (tu) - but; बहुयोजनमायताम् (bahuyojanamāyatām) - extending many yojanas; अन्धकाराम् (andhakārām) - dark; सुविपिनाम् (suvipinām) - very forested; गहनाम् (gahanām) - dense; कीटसेविताम् (kīṭasevitām) - inhabited by insects;]
(We shall enter we that but extending many yojanas, dark, very forested, dense, inhabited by insects.)
But we shall enter that place, which stretches many yojanas, dark, very forested, dense, and inhabited by insects. (03-266-38)
गत्वा सुमहदध्वानमादित्यस्य प्रभां ततः। दृष्टवन्तः स्म तत्रैव भवनं दिव्यमन्तरा ॥०३-२६६-३९॥
gatvā sumahadadhvānam ādityasya prabhāṃ tataḥ। dṛṣṭavantaḥ sma tatraiva bhavanaṃ divyam antarā ॥03-266-39॥
[गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सुमहत्-अध्वानम् (sumahat-adhvānam) - very great path; आदित्यस्य (ādityasya) - of the sun; प्रभाम् (prabhām) - ray (of light); ततः (tataḥ) - from there; दृष्टवन्तः (dṛṣṭavantaḥ) - they saw; स्म (sma) - indeed; तत्र एव (tatra eva) - right there; भवनम् (bhavanaṃ) - palace; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अन्तरा (antarā) - within;]
(Having gone a very great path, the sun's ray from there, they indeed saw right there a divine palace within.)

तया दत्तानि भोज्यानि पानानि विविधानि च। भुक्त्वा लब्धबलाः सन्तस्तयोक्तेन पथा ततः ॥०३-२६६-४१॥
tayā dattāni bhojyāni pānāni vividhāni ca। bhuktvā labdhabalāḥ santaḥ tayoktena pathā tataḥ॥03-266-41॥

निर्याय तस्मादुद्देशात्पश्यामो लवणाम्भसः। समीपे सह्यमलयौ दर्दुरं च महागिरिम् ॥०३-२६६-४२॥
niryāya tasmāduddeśāt paśyāmo lavaṇāmbhasaḥ। samīpe sahya-malayau darduraṃ ca mahāgirim ॥03-266-42॥

अनेकशतविस्तीर्णं योजनानां महोदधिम्। तिमिनक्रझषावासं चिन्तयन्तः सुदुःखिताः ॥०३-२६६-४४॥
anekaśatavistīrṇaṃ yojanānāṃ mahodadhim। timinakra-jhaṣa-āvāsaṃ cintayantaḥ suduḥkhitāḥ ॥03-266-44॥

ततो दग्धाविमौ पक्षौ न दग्धौ तु जटायुषः। तदा मे चिरदृष्टः स भ्राता गृध्रपतिः प्रियः ॥ निर्दग्धपक्षः पतितो ह्यहमस्मिन्महागिरौ ॥०३-२६६-४९॥
tato dagdhāvimau pakṣau na dagdhau tu jaṭāyuṣaḥ. tadā me ciradṛṣṭaḥ sa bhrātā gṛdhrapatiḥ priyaḥ ॥ nirdagdha-pakṣaḥ patito hy aham asmin mahāgirau ॥03-266-49॥

तस्यैवं वदतोऽस्माभिर्हतो भ्राता निवेदितः। व्यसनं भवतश्चेदं सङ्क्षेपाद्वै निवेदितम् ॥०३-२६६-५०॥
tasyai-vaṃ vadato'smābhir hato bhrātā niveditaḥ। vyasanaṃ bhavataś cedaṃ saṅkṣepād vai niveditam ॥03-266-50॥

sa sampātis tadā rājan śrutvā sumahad apriyam। viṣaṇṇa-cetāḥ papraccha punar asmān ariṃ-dama ॥03-266-51॥

कः स रामः कथं सीता जटायुश्च कथं हतः। इच्छामि सर्वमेवैतच्छ्रोतुं प्लवगसत्तमाः ॥०३-२६६-५२॥
kaḥ sa rāmaḥ kathaṁ sītā jaṭāyuś ca kathaṁ hataḥ। icchāmi sarvam eva etac chrotuṁ plavaga-sattamāḥ॥03-266-52॥

(Who is that Rāma? How (is) Sītā (so), and how was Jaṭāyu killed? I desire indeed to hear all this, O best among monkeys.)

तस्याहं सर्वमेवैतं भवतो व्यसनागमम्। प्रायोपवेशने चैव हेतुं विस्तरतोऽब्रुवम् ॥०३-२६६-५३॥
tasyāhaṃ sarvamevaitaṃ bhavato vyasanāgamam। prāyopaveśane caiva hetuṃ vistarato'bruvam ॥03-266-53॥

सोऽस्मानुत्थापयामास वाक्येनानेन पक्षिराट्। रावणो विदितो मह्यं लङ्का चास्य महापुरी ॥०३-२६६-५४॥
so'smān utthāpayām āsa vākyena anena pakṣirāṭ। rāvaṇo vidito mahyaṃ laṅkā ca asya mahāpurī॥03-266-54॥

दृष्टा पारे समुद्रस्य त्रिकूटगिरिकन्दरे। भवित्री तत्र वैदेही न मेऽस्त्यत्र विचारणा ॥०३-२६६-५५॥
dṛṣṭā pāre samudrasya trikūṭagirikandare. bhavitri tatra vaidehī na me-'sty-atra vicāraṇā ॥03-266-55॥

इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा वयमुत्थाय सत्वराः। सागरप्लवने मन्त्रं मन्त्रयामः परन्तप ॥०३-२६६-५६॥
iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā vayam utthāya satvarāḥ। sāgaraplavane mantraṃ mantrayāmaḥ parantapa ॥03-266-56॥

नाध्यवस्यद्यदा कश्चित्सागरस्य विलङ्घने। ततः पितरमाविश्य पुप्लुवेऽहं महार्णवम् ॥ शतयोजनविस्तीर्णं निहत्य जलराक्षसीम् ॥०३-२६६-५७॥
nādhyavasyadyadā kaścitsaāgarasya vilaṅghane। tataḥ pitaramāviśya pupluve'haṃ mahārṇavam ॥ śatayojanavistīrṇaṃ nihatya jalarākṣasīm ॥03-266-57॥

निमित्तैस्तामहं सीतामुपलभ्य पृथग्विधैः। उपसृत्याब्रुवं चार्यामभिगम्य रहोगताम् ॥०३-२६६-५९॥
nimittaiḥ tām ahaṃ sītām upalabhya pṛthag-vidhaiḥ। upasṛtya abruvaṃ cāryām abhigamya rahogatām ॥03-266-59॥

(By means, her, I, Sītā, having perceived, of various kinds, approaching, I said, to the noble lady, having come near, who was in seclusion.)
Having perceived Sītā by various signs, I approached and spoke to the noble lady who was alone in solitude. (03-266-59)
सीते रामस्य दूतोऽहं वानरो मारुतात्मजः। त्वद्दर्शनमभिप्रेप्सुरिह प्राप्तो विहायसा ॥०३-२६६-६०॥
sīte rāmasya dūto'ham vā naro mārutātmajaḥ। tvaddarśanam abhiprepsur iha prāpto vihāyasā ॥03-266-60॥
[सीते (sīte) - O Sītā; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; दूतः (dūtaḥ) - messenger; अहम् (aham) - I; वानरः (vānaraḥ) - monkey; मारुतात्मजः (mārutātmajaḥ) - son of Māruta (Wind); त्वत्-दर्शनम् (tvat-darśanam) - your sight; अभिप्रेप्सुः (abhiprepsuḥ) - desiring; इह (iha) - here; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; विहायसा (vihāyasā) - by air;]
(O Sītā, of Rāma messenger I, monkey, son of Māruta, your sight desiring, here attained by air.)
O Sītā, I am Rāma's messenger, a monkey, the son of the Wind; desiring to see you, I have come here through the air. (03-266-60)
राजपुत्रौ कुशलिनौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। सर्वशाखामृगेन्द्रेण सुग्रीवेणाभिपालितौ ॥०३-२६६-६१॥
rājaputrau kuśalinau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau। sarvaśākhāmṛgendreṇa sugrīveṇābhipālitau ॥03-266-61॥

(Princes, safe, brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, by Sugrīva, lord of all vānaras, by Sugrīva, are protected.)
The princes, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, the brothers who are safe, are protected by Sugrīva, the lord of all vānaras. (03-266-61)
कुशलं त्वाब्रवीद्रामः सीते सौमित्रिणा सह। सखिभावाच्च सुग्रीवः कुशलं त्वानुपृच्छति ॥०३-२६६-६२॥
kuśalaṃ tvābravīdrāmaḥ sīte saumitriṇā saha। sakhibhāvācca sugrīvaḥ kuśalaṃ tvānupṛcchati ॥03-266-62॥
[कुशलम् (kuśalam) - well-being; त्वा (tvā) - to you; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - (he) said; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; सीते (sīte) - O Sītā; सौमित्रिणा (saumitriṇā) - with the son of Sumitrā (Lakṣmaṇa); सह (saha) - together; सखिभावात् (sakhibhāvāt) - out of friendship; च (ca) - and; सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugrīva; कुशलम् (kuśalam) - well-being; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनुपृच्छति (anupṛcchati) - (he) inquires after;]
(Well-being to you Rāma said, O Sītā, together with the son of Sumitrā; and out of friendship Sugrīva inquires after your well-being.)
Rāma, along with Lakṣmaṇa, greeted you with wishes for your well-being, O Sītā. Out of friendship, Sugrīva also asks after your welfare. (03-266-62)
क्षिप्रमेष्यति ते भर्ता सर्वशाखामृगैः सह। प्रत्ययं कुरु मे देवि वानरोऽस्मि न राक्षसः ॥०३-२६६-६३॥
kṣiprameṣyati te bhartā sarvaśākhāmṛgaiḥ saha| pratyaṁ kuru me devi vānarosm̐i na rākṣasaḥ ॥03-266-63॥
[क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; एष्यति (eṣyati) - (he) will come; ते (te) - to you; भर्ता (bhartā) - your husband; सर्वशाखामृगैः (sarvaśākhāmṛgaiḥ) - with all monkeys; सह (saha) - together; प्रत्ययम् (pratyayam) - confidence; कुरु (kuru) - make; मे (me) - in me; देवि (devi) - O Lady; वानरः (vānaraḥ) - monkey; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; न (na) - not; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - rakṣasa (demon);]
(Quickly will come to you your husband with all monkeys together; confidence make in me, O Lady, monkey I am, not demon.)
Your husband will quickly come to you together with all the monkeys; have confidence in me, O Lady— I am a monkey, not a rakṣasa (demon). (03-266-63)
मुहूर्तमिव च ध्यात्वा सीता मां प्रत्युवाच ह। अवैमि त्वां हनूमन्तमविन्ध्यवचनादहम् ॥०३-२६६-६४॥
muhūrtam iva ca dhyātvā sītā māṃ pratyuvāca ha। avaimi tvāṃ hanūmantam avindhyavacanād aham ॥03-266-64॥
[मुहूर्तमिव (muhūrtam iva) - like a moment; च (ca) - and; ध्यात्वा (dhyātvā) - having reflected; सीता (sītā) - Sītā; मां (māṃ) - to me; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; ह (ha) - indeed; अवैमि (avaimi) - I recognize; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; हनूमन्तम् (hanūmantam) - Hanūmant; अविन्ध्यवचनात् (avindhyavacanāt) - from faultless words; अहम् (aham) - I (subject);]
(Like a moment and having reflected, Sītā to me replied indeed: I recognize you, Hanūmant, from faultless words, I.)
After reflecting for a moment, Sītā indeed replied to me: "I recognize you as Hanūmant from your faultless words." (03-266-64)
अविन्ध्यो हि महाबाहो राक्षसो वृद्धसंमतः। कथितस्तेन सुग्रीवस्त्वद्विधैः सचिवैर्वृतः ॥०३-२६६-६५॥
avindhyo hi mahābāho rākṣaso vṛddhasaṃmataḥ। kathitastena sugrīvastvadvidhaiḥ sacivairvṛtaḥ॥03-266-65॥

(Avindhya indeed, O mighty-armed, the Rākṣasa respected by elders, spoken (about) by him, Sugrīva surrounded by ministers like you.)
O mighty-armed one, Avindhya, the Rākṣasa respected by elders, has said that Sugrīva is surrounded by ministers like you. (03-266-65)
गम्यतामिति चोक्त्वा मां सीता प्रादादिमं मणिम्। धारिता येन वैदेही कालमेतमनिन्दिता ॥०३-२६६-६६॥
gamyatāmiti coktvā māṃ sītā prādād imaṃ maṇim। dhāritā yena vaidehī kālam etam aninditā ॥03-266-66॥
[गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let (someone) go; let it be gone; इति (iti) - thus; so; च (ca) - and; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; माम् (mām) - me; सीता (sītā) - Sita; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; इमम् (imam) - this; मणिम् (maṇim) - jewel; gem; धारिता (dhāritā) - worn; borne; kept; येन (yena) - by which; वैदेही (vaidehī) - Vaidehi; (epithet of Sita); कालम् (kālam) - time; period; एतम् (etam) - this; अनिन्दिता (aninditā) - blameless; faultless;]
(Let it be gone—thus having spoken to me, Sita gave this jewel; by which Vaidehi, the blameless one, has been wearing this for this time.)
Sita, having said to me 'let it be gone', gave me this jewel, which the blameless Vaidehi has worn all this time. (03-266-66)
प्रत्ययार्थं कथां चेमां कथयामास जानकी। क्षिप्तामिषीकां काकस्य चित्रकूटे महागिरौ ॥ भवता पुरुषव्याघ्र प्रत्यभिज्ञानकारणात् ॥०३-२६६-६७॥
pratyayārthaṃ kathāṃ cemāṃ kathayāmāsa jānukī। kṣiptāmiṣīkāṃ kākasya citrakūṭe mahāgirau ॥ bhavatā puruṣavyāghra pratyabhijñānakāraṇāt ॥03-266-67॥
[प्रत्ययार्थं (pratyayārtham) - for assurance; कथां (kathām) - story; च (ca) - and; इमां (imām) - this (feminine accusative); कथयामास (kathayāmāsa) - told; जानकी (jānakī) - Jānakī (Sītā); क्षिप्तामिषीकां (kṣiptāmiṣīkām) - the (thrown) darbha grass; काकस्य (kākasya) - of the crow; चित्रकूटे (citrakūṭe) - at Citrakūṭa; महागिरौ (mahāgirau) - on the great mountain; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - O tiger among men; प्रत्यभिज्ञानकारणात् (pratyabhijñānakāraṇāt) - for the purpose of recognition;]
(For assurance, the story also this told Jānakī; the thrown darbha grass of the crow at Citrakūṭa on the great mountain. By you, O tiger among men, for the sake of recognition.)
For your assurance, Jānakī also told this story of the darbha grass thrown at the crow on the great Citrakūṭa mountain, O tiger among men, for the purpose of recognition. (03-266-67)
श्रावयित्वा तदात्मानं ततो दग्ध्वा च तां पुरीम्। सम्प्राप्त इति तं रामः प्रियवादिनमर्चयत् ॥०३-२६६-६८॥
śrāvayitvā tad-ātmānaṃ tato dagdhvā ca tāṃ purīm। samprāpta iti taṃ rāmaḥ priyavādinam arcayat॥03-266-68॥
[श्रावयित्वा (śrāvayitvā) - having made heard; तत् (tat) - that; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दग्ध्वा (dagdhvā) - having burnt; च (ca) - and; ताम् (tām) - that; पुरीम् (purīm) - city; सम्प्राप्त (samprāpta) - arrived; इति (iti) - thus; तम् (tam) - him; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; प्रियवादिनम् (priyavādinam) - pleasant-spoken one; अर्चयत् (arcayat) - honored;]
(Having made that himself heard, then having burnt that city and arrived thus, Rāma honored him, the pleasant-spoken one.)
