ततस्तत्रैव रामस्य समासीनस्य तैः सह। समाजग्मुः कपिश्रेष्ठाः सुग्रीववचनात्तदा ॥०३-२६७-१॥
tatas tatraiva rāmasya samāsīnasya taiḥ saha। samājagmuḥ kapiśreṣṭhāḥ sugrīvavacanāt tadā ॥03-267-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - there itself; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; समासीनस्य (samāsīnasya) - of (him) who was seated; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; सह (saha) - together; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - (they) came together; कपिश्रेष्ठाः (kapiśreṣṭhāḥ) - the foremost of the monkeys; सुग्रीववचनात् (sugrīvavacanāt) - upon Sugrīva’s instruction; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then, there itself, of Rāma (who was) seated, with them together, the foremost of the monkeys came together upon Sugrīva’s instruction then.)

श्रीमान्दधिमुखो नाम हरिवृद्धोऽपि वीर्यवान्। प्रचकर्ष महत्सैन्यं हरीणां भीमतेजसाम् ॥०३-२६७-७॥
śrīmān dadhimukho nāma harivṛddho'pi vīryavān। pracakarṣa mahatsainyaṁ harīṇāṁ bhīmatejasām॥03-267-7॥

ete cānye ca bahavo hariyūthapayūthapāḥ। asaṅkhyeyā mahārāja samīyu rāmakāraṇāt॥03-267-9॥
[एते (ete) - these; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; हरि (hari) - monkey; यूथप (yūthapa) - chief; यूथपाः (yūthapāḥ) - chiefs; असङ्ख्येया (asaṅkhyeyā) - innumerable; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; समीयुः (samīyuḥ) - came; रामकारणात् (rāmakāraṇāt) - for the sake of Rāma;]
(These and others and many monkey-chief-chiefs, innumerable O great king, came for the sake of Rāma.)

शिरीषकुसुमाभानां सिंहानामिव नर्दताम्। श्रूयते तुमुलः शब्दस्तत्र तत्र प्रधावताम् ॥०३-२६७-१०॥
śirīṣakusumābhānāṃ siṃhānām iva nardatām। śrūyate tumulaḥ śabdastatra tatra pradhāvatām॥03-267-10॥
[शिरीषकुसुमाभानाम् (śirīṣakusumābhānām) - of those whose luster is like śirīṣa flower; सिंहानाम् (siṃhānām) - of lions; इव (iva) - like; नर्दताम् (nardatām) - roaring; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; तुमुलः (tumulaḥ) - loud; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; तत्र (tatra) - there; तत्र (tatra) - there; प्रधावताम् (pradhāvatām) - of those running forth;]
(Of lions whose luster is like śirīṣa flowers, like roaring, a loud sound is heard there and there of those who are running forth.)

गिरिकूटनिभाः केचित्केचिन्महिषसंनिभाः। शरदभ्रप्रतीकाशाः पिष्टहिङ्गुलकाननाः ॥०३-२६७-११॥
girikūṭanibhāḥ kecit kecin mahiṣasaṃnibhāḥ। śaradabhraratīkāśāḥ piṣṭahiṅgulakānanāḥ ॥03-267-11॥
[गिरिकूटनिभाः (girikūṭanibhāḥ) - mountain-peak-like; केचित् (kecit) - some; केचन (kecan) - some; महिषसंनिभाः (mahiṣasaṃnibhāḥ) - buffalo-like; शरदभ्रप्रतीकाशाः (śaradabhraratīkāśāḥ) - autumn-cloud-resembling; पिष्टहिङ्गुलकाननाः (piṣṭahiṅgulakānanāḥ) - having groves of powdered cinnabar;]
(Some mountain-peak-like; some buffalo-like; resembling autumn-clouds; having groves of powdered cinnabar.)
Some of them were like mountain peaks, some like buffaloes, some resembled autumn clouds, and some had forests of powdered cinnabar. (03-267-11)
उत्पतन्तः पतन्तश्च प्लवमानाश्च वानराः। उद्धुन्वन्तोऽपरे रेणूनसमाजग्मुः समन्ततः ॥०३-२६७-१२॥
utpatantaḥ patantaś ca plavamānāś ca vānarāḥ। uddhunvanto 'pare reṇūn samājagmuḥ samantataḥ॥03-267-12॥
[उत्पतन्तः (utpatantaḥ) - rising up; (leaping upward); पतन्तः (patantaḥ) - falling down; च (ca) - and; प्लवमानाः (plavamānāḥ) - leaping; (moving by jumping); च (ca) - and; वानराः (vānarāḥ) - the monkeys; उद्धुन्वन्तः (uddhunvantaḥ) - stirring up; (shaking); अपरे (apare) - others; रेणून् (reṇūn) - dust particles; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - came together; (gathered; arrived); समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - from all sides; (on all sides);]
(Rising up, falling down, and leaping, and the monkeys; stirring up others, dust particles, came together from all sides.)

स वानरमहालोकः पूर्णसागरसंनिभः। निवेशमकरोत्तत्र सुग्रीवानुमते तदा ॥०३-२६७-१३॥
sa vānaramahālokaḥ pūrṇasāgarasaṃnibhaḥ। niveśam akarot tatra sugrīvānumate tadā ॥03-267-13॥

तेन व्यूढेन सैन्येन लोकानुद्वर्तयन्निव। प्रययौ राघवः श्रीमान्सुग्रीवसहितस्तदा ॥०३-२६७-१५॥
tena vyūḍhena sainyena lokān udvartayan niva। prayayau rāghavaḥ śrīmān sugrīva-sahitaḥ tadā॥03-267-15॥

(By that arrayed army, as if agitating the worlds, Rāghava, prosperous, together with Sugrīva, then set forth.)
With that well-arrayed army, as if shaking the worlds, the illustrious Rāghava, together with Sugrīva, set out at that time. (03-267-15)
मुखमासीत्तु सैन्यस्य हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः। जघनं पालयामास सौमित्रिरकुतोभयः ॥०३-२६७-१६॥
mukham āsīt tu sainyasya hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ। jaghanaṃ pālayāmāsa saumitrir akutobhayaḥ॥03-267-16॥
[मुखम् (mukham) - face; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; तु (tu) - but; सैन्यस्य (sainyasya) - of the army; हनूमान् (hanūmān) - Hanuman; मारुतात्मजः (mārutātmajaḥ) - son of the wind (Vāyu); जघनम् (jaghanam) - rear; पालयामास (pālayāmāsa) - protected; सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - Saumitri (Lakshmana); अकुतोभयः (akutobhayaḥ) - fearing nothing;]
(The face (front) was but of the army Hanuman, son of the wind. The rear protected Saumitri, fearing nothing.)

(Shone forth the monkey army, that having śāla, tāla (trees), and rocks as weapons, like a very great rice granary towards sunrise.)

(Nala, Nīla, Aṅgada, Kṛtha, Mainda, and Dvivida (having been) protected, the very great army went for the achievement of Rāghava's purpose.)

विधिवत्सुप्रशस्तेषु बहुमूलफलेषु च। प्रभूतमधुमांसेषु वारिमत्सु शिवेषु च ॥०३-२६७-२०॥
vidhivatsupraśasteṣu bahumūlaphaleṣu ca। prabhūtamadhumāṃseṣu vārimatsu śiveṣu ca ॥03-267-20॥
[विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the proper method; सु-प्रशस्तेषु (su-praśasteṣu) - in most excellent (well-praised or properly approved); बहु-मूल-फलेषु (bahu-mūla-phaleṣu) - among plentiful root-fruits; च (ca) - and; प्रभूत-मधु-मांसेषु (prabhūta-madhu-māṃseṣu) - among abundant honey and flesh; वारि-मत्सु (vāri-matsu) - in water (and) fish; शिवेषु (śiveṣu) - in auspicious (places or things); च (ca) - and;]

(Having the appearance of a second ocean, that army with numerous banners, having reached the Vela forest, made encampment then.)
That army, resembling a second ocean and adorned with many banners, upon reaching the Vela forest, made its encampment at that time. (03-267-22)
ततो दाशरथिः श्रीमान्सुग्रीवं प्रत्यभाषत। मध्ये वानरमुख्यानां प्राप्तकालमिदं वचः ॥०३-२६७-२३॥
tato dāśarathiḥ śrīmān sugrīvaṃ pratyabhāṣata. madhye vānaramukhyānāṃ prāptakālam idaṃ vacaḥ ॥03-267-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; after that; दाशरथिः (dāśarathiḥ) - descendant of Daśaratha (i.e., Rāma); श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; illustrious; endowed with fortune; सुग्रीवं (sugrīvam) - Sugrīva (proper noun; accusative); प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed; spoke to; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; among; वानरमुख्यानाम् (vānaramukhyānām) - of the chiefs of monkeys; प्राप्तकालम् (prāptakālam) - appropriate for the time; timely; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; words;]
(Then the illustrious descendant of Daśaratha addressed Sugrīva with these timely words in the midst of the chiefs of the monkeys.)
Then the illustrious Rāma, descendant of Daśaratha, spoke these timely words to Sugrīva in the midst of the chiefs of the monkeys. (03-267-23)
उपायः को नु भवतां मतः सागरलङ्घने। इयं च महती सेना सागरश्चापि दुस्तरः ॥०३-२६७-२४॥
upāyaḥ ko nu bhavatāṁ mataḥ sāgara-laṅghane। iyaṁ ca mahatī senā sāgaraś cāpi dustaraḥ॥03-267-24॥
[उपायः (upāyaḥ) - means; को (ko) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; भवतां (bhavatāṁ) - of you (plural); मतः (mataḥ) - thought; सागर-लङ्घने (sāgara-laṅghane) - in crossing the ocean; इयं (iyaṁ) - this; च (ca) - and; महती (mahatī) - great; सेना (senā) - army; सागरः (sāgaraḥ) - the ocean; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दुस्तरः (dustaraḥ) - difficult to cross;]
(Means what indeed of you is thought in crossing the ocean? This and great army, and the ocean also is difficult to cross.)
What means do you all consider for crossing the ocean? This is a great army, and the ocean too is difficult to cross. (03-267-24)
तत्रान्ये व्याहरन्ति स्म वानराः पटुमानिनः। समर्था लङ्घने सिन्धोर्न तु कृत्स्नस्य वानराः ॥०३-२६७-२५॥
tatrānye vyāharanti sma vānarāḥ paṭumāninaḥ। samarthā laṅghane sindhor na tu kṛtsnasya vānarāḥ॥03-267-25॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अन्ये (anye) - others; व्याहरन्ति स्म (vyāharanti sma) - spoke indeed; वानराः (vānarāḥ) - monkeys; पटुमानिनः (paṭumāninaḥ) - skilled-proud (proud of their skill); समर्थाः (samarthāḥ) - capable; लङ्घने (laṅghane) - in crossing (over); सिन्धोः (sindhoḥ) - of the ocean; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; कृत्स्नस्य (kṛtsnasya) - entire; वानराः (vānarāḥ) - monkeys;]
(There others spoke indeed the monkeys, skilled-proud; capable in crossing of the ocean, not but entire the monkeys.)
There, other monkeys, proud of their skills, indeed spoke; while some were capable in crossing the ocean, not all the monkeys were capable of crossing it in its entirety. (03-267-25)
केचिन्नौभिर्व्यवस्यन्ति केचीच्च विविधैः प्लवैः। नेति रामश्च तान्सर्वान्सान्त्वयन्प्रत्यभाषत ॥०३-२६७-२६॥
kecin naubhir vyavasayanti kecid ca vividhaiḥ plavaiḥ। neti rāmaś ca tān sarvān sāntvayan pratyabhāṣata ॥03-267-26॥
[केचन (kecin) - some; नौभिः (naubhiḥ) - with boats; व्यवस्यन्ति (vyavasayanti) - strive; केचित् (kecit) - others; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; प्लवैः (plavaiḥ) - rafts; नेति (neti) - not so; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - them; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; सान्त्वयन् (sāntvayan) - comforting; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - spoke to;]
(Some strive with boats, others and with various rafts; not so—Rama, too, all them comforting, addressed (them).)
Some endeavored with boats, and others with various rafts; but Rama, comforting them all, said, "No (do not do so)." (03-267-26)
शतयोजनविस्तारं न शक्ताः सर्ववानराः। क्रान्तुं तोयनिधिं वीरा नैषा वो नैष्ठिकी मतिः ॥०३-२६७-२७॥
śatayojanavistāraṃ na śaktāḥ sarvavānarāḥ। krāntuṃ toyanidhiṃ vīrā naiṣā vo naiṣṭhikī matiḥ॥03-267-27॥
[शतयोजनविस्तारं (śata-yojana-vistāram) - having an expanse of a hundred yojanas; न (na) - not; शक्ताः (śaktāḥ) - capable; सर्ववानराः (sarva-vānarāḥ) - all monkeys; क्रान्तुं (krāntum) - to cross; तोयनिधिं (toya-nidhim) - ocean; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; नैषा (naiṣā) - this is not; वः (vaḥ) - your; नैष्ठिकी (naiṣṭhikī) - fixed; मतिः (matiḥ) - resolution;]
(All monkeys are not capable, heroes, to cross the ocean having an expanse of a hundred yojanas; this is not your fixed resolution.)
Heroes, none of all the monkeys are capable of crossing the ocean spanning a hundred yojanas; this is not your fixed resolve. (03-267-27)
नावो न सन्ति सेनाया बह्व्यस्तारयितुं तथा। वणिजामुपघातं च कथमस्मद्विधश्चरेत् ॥०३-२६७-२८॥
nāvo na santi senāyā bahvyas tārayituṃ tathā। vaṇijām upaghātaṃ ca katham asmad-vidhaś caret ॥03-267-28॥
[नावः (nāvaḥ) - boats; न (na) - not; सन्ति (santi) - are; सेनायाः (senāyāḥ) - of the army; बह्व्यः (bahvyaḥ) - many; तारयितुम् (tārayitum) - to carry across; तथा (tathā) - so; वणिजाम् (vaṇijām) - of merchants; उपघातम् (upaghātam) - harm; च (ca) - and; कथम् (katham) - how; अस्मद्विधः (asmad-vidhaḥ) - one like us; चरेत् (caret) - should act;]
(Boats not are of the army many to carry across so; harm of merchants and how one like us should act.)
There are not many boats for the army to carry across; and regarding the harm to the merchants, how should someone like us act? (03-267-28)
विस्तीर्णं चैव नः सैन्यं हन्याच्छिद्रेषु वै परः। प्लवोडुपप्रतारश्च नैवात्र मम रोचते ॥०३-२६७-२९॥
vistīrṇaṃ caiva naḥ sainyaṃ hanyāc chidreṣu vai paraḥ। plavoḍupapratāraś ca naivātra mama rocate॥03-267-29॥
[विस्तीर्णम् (vistīrṇam) - expanded; extensive; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - our; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - army; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - may (he/they) destroy; छिद्रेषु (chidreṣu) - in gaps; weaknesses; वै (vai) - indeed; परः (paraḥ) - the other; enemy; प्लव-उडुप-प्रतारः (plava-uḍupa-pratāraḥ) - raft-boat-crossing; crossing by rafts and boats; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; मम (mama) - to me; रोचते (rocate) - pleases; is agreeable;]
(The extensive indeed our army may the enemy destroy in weaknesses indeed; raft-boat-crossing and not indeed here to me pleases.)
It is possible that the enemy may destroy our extensive army at its weak points; and I do not approve here of crossing by rafts and boats. (03-267-29)
अहं त्विमं जलनिधिं समारप्स्याम्युपायतः। प्रतिशेष्याम्युपवसन्दर्शयिष्यति मां ततः ॥०३-२६७-३०॥
ahaṃ tv imaṃ jalanidhiṃ samārakṣyāmy upāyataḥ। pratiśeṣyāmy upavasan darśayiṣyati māṃ tataḥ॥03-267-30॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; तु (tu) - but; इमं (imaṃ) - this; जलनिधिं (jalanidhiṃ) - ocean; समारप्स्यामि (samārakṣyāmi) - will cross over; उपायतः (upāyataḥ) - by means; प्रतिशेष्यामि (pratiśeṣyāmi) - I will remain behind; उपवसन् (upavasan) - fasting; दर्शयिष्यति (darśayiṣyati) - he will show; मां (māṃ) - me; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(I but this ocean will cross over by means; I will remain behind fasting; he will show me then.)
But I will cross this ocean by some means; if I remain behind fasting, then he will show me. (03-267-30)
न चेद्दर्शयिता मार्गं धक्ष्याम्येनमहं ततः। महास्त्रैरप्रतिहतैरत्यग्निपवनोज्ज्वलैः ॥०३-२६७-३१॥
na ceddarśayitā mārgaṃ dhakṣyāmyenamahaṃ tataḥ। mahāstrairapratihatairatyagnipavanojjvalaiḥ ॥03-267-31॥
[न (na) - not; चेद् (ced) - if; दर्शयिता (darśayitā) - he will show; मार्गं (mārgaṃ) - the path; धक्ष्यामि (dhakṣyāmi) - I will burn; एनम् (enam) - him; अहम् (aham) - I; ततः (tataḥ) - then; महास्त्रैः (mahāstraiḥ) - with great missiles; अप्रतिहतैः (apratihatair) - unobstructed; अत्यग्निपवनोज्ज्वलैः (atyagnipavanojjvalaiḥ) - exceedingly fire-and-wind-luminous;]
(If he does not show the path, then I will burn him with great, unobstructed, exceedingly fire-and-wind-luminous missiles.)
If he does not show the way, then I will burn him with mighty missiles, unstoppable, ablaze with intense fire and wind. (03-267-31)
इत्युक्त्वा सहसौमित्रिरुपस्पृश्याथ राघवः। प्रतिशिश्ये जलनिधिं विधिवत्कुशसंस्तरे ॥०३-२६७-३२॥
ity uktvā saha-saumitriḥ upaspṛśya atha rāghavaḥ। pratiśiśye jalanidhiṃ vidhivat kuśa-saṃstare ॥03-267-32॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सह (saha) - together with; सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - Saumitri (another name for Lakṣmaṇa); उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched (purificatorily); अथ (atha) - then; राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - Rāghava (descendant of Raghu; i.e., Rāma); प्रतिशिश्ये (pratiśiśye) - lay down facing; जलनिधिं (jalanidhiṃ) - the ocean; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to procedure; कुशसंस्तरे (kuśa-saṃstare) - on a bed of kuśa grass;]
(Thus having spoken, together with Saumitri, having touched (purificatorily), then Rāghava lay down facing the ocean, according to procedure, on a bed of kuśa grass.)
Having said this, Rāghava, together with Saumitri, performed purificatory rites and then lay down facing the ocean on a bed of kuśa grass in the prescribed manner. (03-267-32)
सागरस्तु ततः स्वप्ने दर्शयामास राघवम्। देवो नदनदीभर्ता श्रीमान्यादोगणैर्वृतः ॥०३-२६७-३३॥
sāgaras tu tataḥ svapne darśayāmāsa rāghavam। devo nadanadī-bhartā śrīmān yādogaṇair vṛtaḥ॥03-267-33॥
[सागरः (sāgaraḥ) - the ocean; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्वप्ने (svapne) - in a dream; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; राघवम् (rāghavam) - to Rāghava (Rāma); देवः (devaḥ) - the god; नदनदीभर्ता (nadanadī-bhartā) - the lord of rivers and streams; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - glorious; यादोगणैः (yādogaṇaiḥ) - with groups of aquatic beings; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded;]
(But the ocean then in a dream showed (himself) to Rāghava. The god, the lord of rivers and streams, glorious, surrounded by groups of aquatic beings.)
Then the ocean, the glorious god, lord of rivers and streams, surrounded by groups of aquatic beings, appeared to Rāghava in a dream. (03-267-33)
कौसल्यामातरित्येवमाभाष्य मधुरं वचः। इदमित्याह रत्नानामाकरैः शतशो वृतः ॥०३-२६७-३४॥
kausalyā-mātari-ity-evam-ābhāṣya madhuraṃ vacaḥ। idam-iti-āha ratnānām-ākaraiḥ śataśo vṛtaḥ ॥03-267-34॥
[कौसल्या (kausalyā) - Kausalya; मातरि (mātari) - to (his) mother; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - so; in this way; आभाष्य (ābhāṣya) - having addressed; मधुरं (madhuraṃ) - sweet; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; इदम् (idam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; आह (āha) - said; रत्नानाम् (ratnānām) - of jewels; आकरैः (ākaraiḥ) - with mines; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded;]
(Kausalya to mother thus so having addressed sweet words, this thus said, with mines of jewels by hundreds surrounded.)
Having thus addressed his mother Kausalya with sweet words, he said this, being surrounded by hundreds of mines of jewels. (03-267-34)
ब्रूहि किं ते करोम्यत्र साहाय्यं पुरुषर्षभ। इक्ष्वाकुरस्मि ते ज्ञातिरिति रामस्तमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२६७-३५॥
brūhi kiṁ te karomyatra sāhāyyaṁ puruṣarṣabha। ikṣvākurasmi te jñātiriti rāmas tam abravīt ॥03-267-35॥
[ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; (imperative of √brū, to say) किं (kiṁ) - what; ते (te) - to you; करोम्यत्र (karomy atra) - shall I do here; साहाय्यं (sāhāyyaṁ) - assistance; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - bull among men; इक्ष्वाकुरस्मि (ikṣvākur asmi) - I am of Ikṣvāku; ते (te) - your; ज्ञातिः (jñātiḥ) - kinsman; इति (iti) - thus; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; तम् (tam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Tell, what to you shall I do here, assistance, bull among men? I am of Ikṣvāku, your kinsman, thus Rāma to him said.)
Rāma said to him, "Tell me, O best of men, what assistance shall I give you here? I am of the Ikṣvāku line, your kinsman." (03-267-35)
मार्गमिच्छामि सैन्यस्य दत्तं नदनदीपते। येन गत्वा दशग्रीवं हन्यां पौलस्त्यपांसनम् ॥०३-२६७-३६॥
mārgam icchāmi sainyasya dattaṃ nandanadīpate. yena gatvā daśagrīvaṃ hanyāṃ paulastyapāṃsanam ॥03-267-36॥
[मार्गम् (mārgam) - the path; the way; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; I seek; सैन्यस्य (sainyasya) - of the army; दत्तम् (dattam) - given; (that which is) granted; नदनदीपते (nadanadīpate) - O lord of rivers and streams; येन (yena) - by which; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; दशग्रीवम् (daśagrīvam) - the ten-necked one; (Rāvaṇa); हन्याम् (hanyām) - I may kill; पौलस्त्यपांसनम् (paulastyapāṃsanam) - the disgrace of the Paulastya family;]
(The path I desire for the army, given, O lord of rivers and streams. By which, having gone, the ten-necked one (Rāvaṇa), I may kill, the disgrace of the Paulastya family.)
O lord of rivers and streams, I desire the path given for the army, by which having gone I may kill the ten-necked one, the disgrace of the Paulastya family. (03-267-36)
यद्येवं याचतो मार्गं न प्रदास्यति मे भवान्। शरैस्त्वां शोषयिष्यामि दिव्यास्त्रप्रतिमन्त्रितैः ॥०३-२६७-३७॥
yady evaṃ yācato mārgaṃ na pradāsyati me bhavān। śaraiḥ tvāṃ śoṣayiṣyāmi divyāstra-pratimantritaiḥ ॥03-267-37॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; याचतः (yācataḥ) - of (me) asking; मार्गं (mārgaṃ) - the path; न (na) - not; प्रदास्यति (pradāsyati) - he will give; मे (me) - to me; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; शोषयिष्यामि (śoṣayiṣyāmi) - I will dry up; दिव्यास्त्रप्रतिमन्त्रितैः (divyāstra-pratimantritaiḥ) - endowed with the spells (mantras) of divine missiles;]
(If thus to me asking the path, you will not give, with arrows endowed with the spells of divine missiles, I will dry up you.)
If you do not show me the path when I am asking thus, I will dry you up with arrows endowed with the mantras of divine weapons. (3-267-37)
इत्येवं ब्रुवतः श्रुत्वा रामस्य वरुणालयः। उवाच व्यथितो वाक्यमिति बद्धाञ्जलिः स्थितः ॥०३-२६७-३८॥
ityevaṃ bruvataḥ śrutvā rāmasya varuṇālayaḥ। uvāca vyathito vākyam iti baddhāñjaliḥ sthitaḥ ॥03-267-38॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; ब्रुवतः (bruvataḥ) - speaking; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; वरुणालयः (varuṇālayaḥ) - abode of Varuṇa; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; व्यथितः (vyathitaḥ) - disturbed; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; इति (iti) - thus; बद्धाञ्जलिः (baddhāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing;]
(Thus, in this manner, having heard Rāma speaking, the abode of Varuṇa, disturbed, spoke words thus, with joined palms, standing.)
Thus, when he heard Rāma speak in this manner, the abode of Varuṇa, standing with joined palms and feeling disturbed, spoke as follows. (03-267-38)
नेच्छामि प्रतिघातं ते नास्मि विघ्नकरस्तव। शृणु चेदं वचो राम श्रुत्वा कर्तव्यमाचर ॥०३-२६७-३९॥
necchāmi pratighātaṁ te nāsmi vighnakarastava. śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco rāma śrutvā kartavyamācara ॥03-267-39॥
[न (na) - not; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; प्रतिघातं (pratighātam) - opposition; ते (te) - to you; न (na) - not; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; विघ्नकरः (vighnakaraḥ) - one who causes obstacles; तव (tava) - of you; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; राम (rāma) - Rāma; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - duty; आचर (ācara) - perform;]
(I do not desire opposition to you, I am not the maker of obstacles of you. Hear also this speech, Rāma; having heard, duty you must perform.)
I do not wish to oppose you; nor am I one who causes obstacles for you. Listen to this instruction, Rāma, and having heard it, do your duty. (03-267-39)
यदि दास्यामि ते मार्गं सैन्यस्य व्रजतोऽऽज्ञया। अन्येऽप्याज्ञापयिष्यन्ति मामेवं धनुषो बलात् ॥०३-२६७-४०॥
yadi dāsyāmi te mārgaṃ sainyasya vrajato''jñayā। anye'pyājñāpayiṣyanti māmevaṃ dhanuṣo balāt ॥03-267-40॥
[यदि (yadi) (yadi) - if; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) (dāsyāmi) - I will give; ते (te) (te) - to you; मार्गं (mārgaṃ) (mārgaṃ) - the path; सैन्यस्य (sainyasya) (sainyasya) - of the army; व्रजतः (vrajataḥ) (vrajataḥ) - while proceeding; आज्ञया (ājñayā) (ājñayā) - by command; अन्ये (anye) (anye) - others; अपि (api) (api) - also; आज्ञापयिष्यन्ति (ājñāpayiṣyanti) (ājñāpayiṣyanti) - will order; माम् (mām) (mām) - me; एवं (evaṃ) (evaṃ) - thus; धनुषः (dhanuṣaḥ) (dhanuṣaḥ) - of the bow; बलात् (balāt) (balāt) - by force;]
(If I will give to you the path of the army proceeding by command, others also will order me thus by force of the bow.)
If I give you the path for your army as commanded, then others too will likewise force me under threat of the bow. (03-267-40)
अस्ति त्वत्र नलो नाम वानरः शिल्पिसंमतः। त्वष्टुर्देवस्य तनयो बलवान्विश्वकर्मणः ॥०३-२६७-४१॥
asti tvatra nalo nāma vāṇaraḥ śilpisaṃmataḥ। tvaṣṭur devasya tanayo balavān viśvakarmaṇaḥ॥03-267-41॥
[अस्ति (asti) - there is; त्वत्र (tvatra) - here; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala (proper noun); नाम (nāma) - by name; वानरः (vāṇaraḥ) - monkey; शिल्पिसंमतः (śilpisaṃmataḥ) - approved by artists; त्वष्टुः (tvaṣṭuḥ) - of Tvaṣṭṛ (divine artisan); देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; तनयः (tanayaḥ) - son; बलवान् (balavān) - powerful; विश्वकर्मणः (viśvakarmaṇaḥ) - of Viśvakarman (another name for the divine craftsman);]
(There is here Nala by name, a monkey, approved by artists; of Tvaṣṭṛ the god the son, powerful, of Viśvakarman.)
Here there is a monkey named Nala, esteemed by craftsmen, the powerful son of Tvaṣṭṛ, the divine architect Viśvakarman. (03-267-41)
स यत्काष्ठं तृणं वापि शिलां वा क्षेप्स्यते मयि। सर्वं तद्धारयिष्यामि स ते सेतुर्भविष्यति ॥०३-२६७-४२॥
sa yat-kāṣṭhaṃ tṛṇaṃ vā api śilāṃ vā kṣepsyate mayi। sarvaṃ tat dhārayiṣyāmi sa te setuḥ bhaviṣyati ॥03-267-42॥
[स (sa) - he; यत् (yat) - whatever; काष्ठं (kāṣṭham) - wood; तृणं (tṛṇam) - grass; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; शिलाम् (śilām) - stone; वा (vā) - or; क्षेप्स्यते (kṣepsyate) - will be thrown; मयि (mayi) - upon me; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; तत् (tat) - that; धारयिष्यामि (dhārayiṣyāmi) - I will support; स (sa) - he; ते (te) - for you; सेतु: (setuḥ) - bridge; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become;]
(He, whatever wood, grass or even stone will be thrown upon me, all that I will support; he will become a bridge for you.)
Whatever wood, grass, or stone is thrown upon me, I will support all of it; it will become a bridge for you. (03-267-42)
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्हिते तस्मिन्रामो नलमुवाच ह। कुरु सेतुं समुद्रे त्वं शक्तो ह्यसि मतो मम ॥०३-२६७-४३॥
ity uktvā antarhite tasmin rāmo nalaṁ uvāca ha. kuru setuṁ samudre tvaṁ śakto hy asi mato mama ॥03-267-43॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; अन्तर्हिते (antarhite) - having disappeared; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - when he; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; नलम् (nalam) - to Nala; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; कुरु (kuru) - build; सेतुम् (setum) - a bridge; समुद्रे (samudre) - in the ocean; त्वम् (tvam) - you; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - are; मतः (mataḥ) - regarded; मम (mama) - by me;]
(Thus having spoken, when he had disappeared, Rama indeed said to Nala: Build a bridge in the ocean; you are indeed regarded by me as capable.)
Having thus spoken and when he had disappeared, Rama said to Nala: "Build a bridge across the ocean; you are indeed regarded as capable by me." (03-267-43)
तेनोपायेन काकुत्स्थः सेतुबन्धमकारयत्। दशयोजनविस्तारमायतं शतयोजनम् ॥०३-२६७-४४॥
tenopāyena kākutsthaḥ setubandham akārayat। daśa-yojana-vistāram āyataṃ śata-yojanam ॥03-267-44॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; उपायेन (upāyena) - by means; काकुत्स्थः (kākutsthaḥ) - Kākutstha; सेतुबन्धम् (setubandham) - bridge-construction; अकारयत् (akārayat) - caused to be made; दश (daśa) - ten; योजन (yojana) - yojanas; विस्तारम् (vistāram) - breadth; आयतं (āyatam) - length; शत (śata) - hundred; योजनम् (yojanam) - yojanas;]
(By that means, Kākutstha caused the bridge-construction to be made. Ten yojanas breadth, length hundred yojanas.)
By that means, Kākutstha (Rāma) had the bridge built—ten yojanas in breadth and one hundred yojanas in length. (03-267-44)
नलसेतुरिति ख्यातो योऽद्यापि प्रथितो भुवि। रामस्याज्ञां पुरस्कृत्य धार्यते गिरिसंनिभः ॥०३-२६७-४५॥
nalasetur iti khyāto yo'dyāpi prathito bhuvi। rāmasyājñāṃ puraskṛtya dhāryate girisaṃnibhaḥ॥03-267-45॥

(Nala's bridge—thus well-known—which even today is celebrated on earth, having placed Rāma's command at the forefront, is upheld, mountain-like.)
The bridge of Nala, thus renowned, which is even today famous on earth, is sustained like a mountain, having been constructed by placing Rāma's command at the forefront. (03-267-45)
तत्रस्थं स तु धर्मात्मा समागच्छद्विभीषणः। भ्राता वै राक्षसेन्द्रस्य चतुर्भिः सचिवैः सह ॥०३-२६७-४६॥
tatrasthaṁ sa tu dharmātmā samāgacchadvibhīṣaṇaḥ। bhrātā vai rākṣasendrasya caturbhiḥ sacivaiḥ saha ॥03-267-46॥
[तत्रस्थं (tatrastham) - standing there; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; समागच्छद्विभीषणः (samāgacchad-vibhīṣaṇaḥ) - approaching Vibhīṣaṇa; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; वै (vai) - indeed; राक्षसेन्द्रस्य (rākṣasendrasya) - of the king of the rākṣasas; चतुर्भिः (caturbhiḥ) - with four; सचिवैः (sacivaiḥ) - counselors; सह (saha) - together;]
(Standing there, he but, righteous-souled, approaching Vibhīṣaṇa, the brother indeed of the king of the rākṣasas, with four counselors together.)
There, that righteous-souled Vibhīṣaṇa, the brother of the king of the rākṣasas, approached together with his four counselors. (03-267-46)
प्रतिजग्राह रामस्तं स्वागतेन महामनाः। सुग्रीवस्य तु शङ्काभूत्प्रणिधिः स्यादिति स्म ह ॥०३-२६७-४७॥
pratijagrāha rāmas taṃ svāgatena mahāmanāḥ। sugrīvasya tu śaṅkābhūt praṇidhiḥ syād iti sma ha ॥03-267-47॥
[प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - received; welcomed; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; तम् (tam) - him; स्वागतेन (svāgatena) - with (words of) welcome; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; सुग्रीवस्य (sugrīvasya) - of Sugrīva; तु (tu) - but; शङ्काभूत् (śaṅkābhūt) - became a cause of suspicion; प्रणिधिः (praṇidhiḥ) - the spy; the observer; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; इति (iti) - thus; स्म (sma) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly;]
(Rāma, great-minded, received him with welcome. But to Sugrīva, the spy indeed might be a cause of suspicion thus.)
Rāma, who was magnanimous, received him with words of welcome. But to Sugrīva, the spy truly became a source of suspicion for this reason. (03-267-47)
राघवस्तस्य चेष्टाभिः सम्यक्च चरितेङ्गितैः। यदा तत्त्वेन तुष्टोऽभूत्तत एनमपूजयत् ॥०३-२६७-४८॥
rāghavas tasya ceṣṭābhiḥ samyak ca cariteṅgitaiḥ। yadā tattvena tuṣṭo'bhūt tata enam apūjayat ॥03-267-48॥
[राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - Rāghava (descendant of Raghu; Rama); तस्य (tasya) - his; चेष्टाभिः (ceṣṭābhiḥ) - by actions; सम्यक् (samyak) - well; properly; च (ca) - and; चरितेङ्गितैः (carita-iṅgitaiḥ) - by conduct and gestures; यदा (yadā) - when; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - truly; in reality; तुष्टः अभूत् (tuṣṭaḥ abhūt) - became satisfied; ततः (tataḥ) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; अपूजयत् (apūjayat) - honored; paid respect;]
(Rāghava, by his actions and properly by conduct and gestures, when truly became satisfied, then him honored.)

सर्वराक्षसराज्ये चाप्यभ्यषिञ्चद्विभीषणम्। चक्रे च मन्त्रानुचरं सुहृदं लक्ष्मणस्य च ॥०३-२६७-४९॥
sarva-rākṣasa-rājye cāpy abhyaṣiñcad vibhīṣaṇam। cakre ca mantrānu-caraṃ suhṛdaṃ lakṣmaṇasya ca ॥03-267-49॥
[सर्वराक्षसराज्ये (sarva-rākṣasa-rājye) - in the entire kingdom of the rākṣasas; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अभ्यषिञ्चत् (abhyaṣiñcat) - anointed; विभीषणम् (vibhīṣaṇam) - Vibhīṣaṇa; चक्रे (cakre) - appointed; च (ca) - and; मन्त्रानुचरम् (mantra-anu-caram) - one who follows counsel; सुहृदम् (suhṛdam) - friend; लक्ष्मणस्य (lakṣmaṇasya) - of Lakṣmaṇa; च (ca) - and;]
(In the entire kingdom of the rākṣasas, also anointed Vibhīṣaṇa; and appointed as counsellor and friend of Lakṣmaṇa also.)
He anointed Vibhīṣaṇa as king over the whole kingdom of the rākṣasas, and appointed him as a counseller and friend of Lakṣmaṇa also. (03-267-49)
विभीषणमते चैव सोऽत्यक्रामन्महार्णवम्। ससैन्यः सेतुना तेन मासेनैव नराधिप ॥०३-२६७-५०॥
vibhīṣaṇamate caiva so'tyakrāmanmahārṇavam। sasainyaḥ setunā tena māsenai va narādhipa ॥03-267-50॥
[विभीषणमते (vibhīṣaṇamate) - on the opinion of Vibhīṣaṇa; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; अत्यक्रामत् (atyakrāmat) - crossed over; महार्णवम् (mahārṇavam) - great ocean; ससैन्यः (sasainyaḥ) - together with army; सेतुना (setunā) - by the bridge; तेन (tena) - by that; मासेन (māsena) - in a month; एव (eva) - indeed; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the lord of men;]
(On the opinion of Vibhīṣaṇa and indeed, he crossed over the great ocean together with his army by that bridge, in a month indeed, the lord of men.)
On Vibhīṣaṇa's counsel, the lord of men crossed the great ocean together with his army by that bridge, all within a month. (03-267-50)
ततो गत्वा समासाद्य लङ्कोद्यानान्यनेकशः। भेदयामास कपिभिर्महान्ति च बहूनि च ॥०३-२६७-५१॥
tato gatvā samāsādya laṅkodyānānyanekasaḥ। bhedayāmāsa kapibhirmahānti ca bahūni ca ॥03-267-51॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; लङ्कोद्यानानि (laṅkodyānāni) - gardens of Laṅkā; अनेकशः (anekasaḥ) - in many ways; repeatedly; भेदयामास (bhedayāmāsa) - they broke; they shattered; कपिभिः (kapibhiḥ) - by the monkeys; महान्ति (mahānti) - great; large; च (ca) - and; बहूनि (bahūni) - many; च (ca) - and;]
(Then having gone and having approached the gardens of Laṅkā in many ways, the monkeys shattered both the great ones and the many ones.)
Then, after going and reaching the gardens of Laṅkā in many ways, the monkeys shattered both the large and the many gardens. (03-267-51)
तत्रास्तां रावणामात्यौ राक्षसौ शुकसारणौ। चारौ वानररूपेण तौ जग्राह विभीषणः ॥०३-२६७-५२॥
tatrāstāṃ rāvaṇāmātyau rākṣasau śukasāraṇau। cārau vānararūpeṇa tau jagrāha vibhīṣaṇaḥ ॥03-267-52॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; आस्ताम् (āstāṃ) - were present (dual); रावणामात्यौ (rāvaṇāmātyau) - Rāvaṇa's ministers (dual); राक्षसौ (rākṣasau) - the two rākṣasas (demons); शुकसारणौ (śuka-sāraṇau) - Śuka and Sāraṇa (proper names; dual); चारौ (cārau) - spies (dual); वानररूपेण (vānararūpeṇa) - in the form of a monkey; तौ (tau) - those two; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; विभीषणः (vibhīṣaṇaḥ) - Vibhīṣaṇa;]
(There were (present) there Rāvaṇa's ministers, the two rākṣasas Śuka and Sāraṇa. Spies, in the form of a monkey, those two Vibhīṣaṇa seized.)
There, Rāvaṇa's ministers, the rākṣasas Śuka and Sāraṇa, were present. Vibhīṣaṇa seized those two spies who had taken the form of monkeys. (03-267-52)
प्रतिपन्नौ यदा रूपं राक्षसं तौ निशाचरौ। दर्शयित्वा ततः सैन्यं रामः पश्चादवासृजत् ॥०३-२६७-५३॥
pratipannau yadā rūpaṃ rākṣasaṃ tau niśācarau। darśayitvā tataḥ sainyaṃ rāmaḥ paścād avāsṛjat ॥03-267-53॥

निवेश्योपवने सैन्यं तच्छूरः प्राज्ञवानरम्। प्रेषयामास दौत्येन रावणस्य ततोऽङ्गदम् ॥०३-२६७-५४॥
niveśyopavane sainyaṁ tacchūraḥ prājñavānaram। preṣayāmāsa dautyena rāvaṇasya tato'ṅgadam ॥03-267-54॥
[निवेश्य (niveśya) - having caused to settle; उपवने (upavane) - in the grove; सैन्यं (sainyaṁ) - the army; तत् (tat) - that; शूरः (śūraḥ) - the valiant (one); प्राज्ञवानरम् (prājñavānaram) - the wise vanara (monkey); प्रेषयामास (preṣayāmāsa) - sent; दौत्येन (dautyena) - as a messenger; रावणस्य (rāvaṇasya) - to Ravana; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अङ्गदम् (aṅgadam) - Angada;]
(Having caused the army to settle in the grove, then the valiant one sent the wise vanara Angada as a messenger to Ravana.)
After having stationed the army in the grove, the brave hero then sent the intelligent monkey Angada to Ravana as a messenger. (03-267-54)
