Mārkaṇḍeya said.
प्रभूतान्नोदके तस्मिन्बहुमूलफले वने। सेनां निवेश्य काकुत्स्थो विधिवत्पर्यरक्षत ॥०३-२६८-१॥
prabhūtānnodake tasmin bahu-mūla-phale vane। senāṃ niveśya kākutstho vidhivatparyarakṣata ॥03-268-1॥
[प्रभूत-अन्न-उदके (prabhūta-anna-udake) - with abundant food and water; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; बहु-मूल-फले (bahu-mūla-phale) - full of many roots and fruits; वने (vane) - in the forest; सेनाम् (senām) - the army; निवेश्य (niveśya) - having stationed; काकुत्स्थः (kākutsthaḥ) - Kākutstha (Rāma); विधिवत् (vidhivat) - properly; पर्यरक्षत् (paryarakṣata) - protected;]
(In that forest, full of many roots and fruits, with abundant food and water, having stationed the army, Kākutstha properly protected (them).)
In that forest, which was rich in many roots and fruits and had abundant food and water, Kākutstha stationed his army and guarded it properly. (03-268-1)
रावणश्च विधिं चक्रे लङ्कायां शास्त्रनिर्मितम्। प्रकृत्यैव दुराधर्षा दृढप्राकारतोरणा ॥०३-२६८-२॥
rāvaṇaś ca vidhiṁ cakre laṅkāyāṁ śāstranirmitam। prakṛtyaiva durādharṣā dṛḍhaprākāratoraṇā ॥03-268-2॥
[रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; च (ca) - and; विधिं (vidhiṁ) - method; चक्रे (cakre) - made; लङ्कायाम् (laṅkāyām) - in Laṅkā; शास्त्रनिर्मितम् (śāstranirmitam) - constructed according to treatises; प्रकृत्या (prakṛtyā) - by nature; एव (eva) - indeed; दुराधर्षा (durādharṣā) - difficult to attack; दृढप्राकारतोरणा (dṛḍhaprākāratoraṇā) - with strong ramparts and gateways;]
(Rāvaṇa and method made in Laṅkā constructed according to treatises. By nature indeed difficult to attack with strong ramparts and gateways.)
Rāvaṇa made arrangements in Laṅkā according to the treatises. By nature, it was indeed difficult to assail, having strong ramparts and gateways. (03-268-2)
अगाधतोयाः परिखा मीननक्रसमाकुलाः। बभूवुः सप्त दुर्धर्षाः खादिरैः शङ्कुभिश्चिताः ॥०३-२६८-३॥
agādhatojāḥ parikhā mīnanakrasamākulāḥ। babhūvuḥ sapta durdharṣāḥ khādiraiḥ śaṅkubhiśchitāḥ ॥03-268-3॥
[अगाधतोयाः (agādhatojāḥ) - of unfathomable water; परिखाः (parikhāḥ) - moats; मीननक्रसमाकुलाः (mīna-nakra-samākulāḥ) - filled with fish and crocodiles; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - were; सप्त (sapta) - seven; दुर्धर्षाः (durdharṣāḥ) - impregnable; खादिरैः (khādiraiḥ) - with khadira-wood; शङ्कुभिः (śaṅkubhiḥ) - with stakes; क्षिताः (chitāḥ) - planted;]
(Moats of unfathomable water, filled with fish and crocodiles, there were seven impregnable, planted with stakes of khadira-wood.)

कर्णाट्टयन्त्रदुर्धर्षा बभूवुः सहुडोपलाः। साशीविषघटायोधाः ससर्जरसपांसवः ॥०३-२६८-४॥
karṇāṭṭayantra-durdharṣā babhūvuḥ sahuḍopalāḥ। sāśīviṣaghaṭāyodhāḥ sasarjarasapāṃsavaḥ ॥03-268-4॥
[कर्णाट्ट-यन्त्र-दुर्धर्षाः (karṇāṭṭa-yantra-durdharṣāḥ) - difficult to attack by the machines of Karnataka; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; स-हुड-उपलाः (sa-huḍa-upalāḥ) - with lumps and stones; स-आशीविष-घटा-योधाः (sa-āśīviṣa-ghaṭā-yodhāḥ) - with warriors wielding pots of venomous snakes; स-सर्ज-रस-पांसवः (sa-sarja-rasa-pāṃsavaḥ) - with powder of resin and juice;]
(Difficult to attack by the machines of Karnataka became, with lumps and stones, with warriors wielding pots of venomous snakes, with powder of resin and juice.)
They became unassailable by the machines of Karnataka, with piles of stones, with warriors wielding pots containing venomous snakes, and with powder of resin and sap. (03-268-4)
मुसलालातनाराचतोमरासिपरश्वधैः। अन्विताश्च शतघ्नीभिः समधूच्छिष्टमुद्गराः ॥०३-२६८-५॥
musalālatanārācatomarāsiparaśvadhaiḥ। anvitāśca śataghnībhiḥ samadhūcchiṣṭamudgarāḥ ॥03-268-5॥
[मुसल (musala) - with pestles; आलात (ālata) - with firebrands; नाराच (nārāca) - with iron arrows; तोमर (tomara) - with javelins; आसि (āsi) - with swords; परश्वधैः (paraśvadhaiḥ) - with battle-axes; अन्विताः (anvitāḥ) - joined; च (ca) - and; शतघ्नीभिः (śataghnībhiḥ) - with machines (that slay hundreds); समधूच्छिष्ट (samadhūcchiṣṭa) - mixed together with remnants (remains); मुद्गराः (mudgarāḥ) - maces (clubs);]
(With pestles, firebrands, iron arrows, javelins, swords, battle-axes, joined and with machines (that slay hundreds), maces mixed together with remnants.)
Clubs, pestles, firebrands, iron arrows, javelins, swords, and battle-axes, along with machines for slaying hundreds and maces mixed with various remnants, were present. (03-268-5)
पुरद्वारेषु सर्वेषु गुल्माः स्थावरजङ्गमाः। बभूवुः पत्तिबहुलाः प्रभूतगजवाजिनः ॥०३-२६८-६॥
puradvāreṣu sarveṣu gulmāḥ sthāvarajaṅgamāḥ। babhūvuḥ pattibahulāḥ prabhūtagajavājinaḥ ॥03-268-6॥
[पुरद्वारेषु (puradvāreṣu) - at all city gates; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - all; गुल्माः (gulmāḥ) - troops; स्थावरजङ्गमाः (sthāvarajaṅgamāḥ) - stationary and moving (forces); बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - were; पत्तिबहुलाः (pattibahulāḥ) - abundant in foot soldiers; प्रभूतगजवाजिनः (prabhūtagajavājinaḥ) - possessing many elephants and horses;]
(At all city gates, all troops, stationary and moving, were; abundant in foot soldiers, possessing many elephants and horses.)
At all the city gates there were various troops, both stationary and moving, rich in foot soldiers, and filled with many elephants and horses. (03-268-6)
अङ्गदस्त्वथ लङ्काया द्वारदेशमुपागतः। विदितो राक्षसेन्द्रस्य प्रविवेश गतव्यथः ॥०३-२६८-७॥
aṅgadas tv atha laṅkāyā dvāradeśam upāgataḥ। vidito rākṣasendrasya praviveśa gatavyathaḥ॥03-268-7॥
[अङ्गदः (aṅgadaḥ) - Aṅgada; (proper noun, son of Vāli); तु (tu) - but; however; अथ (atha) - then; लङ्कायाः (laṅkāyāḥ) - of Laṅkā; द्वार-देशम् (dvāra-deśam) - region of the gate; (dvāra - gate; deśa - region, area); उपागतः (upāgataḥ) - approached; arrived; विदितः (viditaḥ) - known; perceived; राक्षस-इन्द्रस्य (rākṣasendrasya) - of the lord of the rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa); प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; गत-व्यथः (gata-vyathaḥ) - free from anxiety; (gata - gone; vyathā - pain, anxiety);]
(But then Aṅgada, having approached the region of the gate of Laṅkā, being known to the lord of the rākṣasas, entered free from anxiety.)
But then Aṅgada, having come to the gate region of Laṅkā, known to the king of the rākṣasas, entered without anxiety. (03-268-7)
मध्ये राक्षसकोटीनां बह्वीनां सुमहाबलः। शुशुभे मेघमालाभिरादित्य इव संवृतः ॥०३-२६८-८॥
madhye rākṣasakoṭīnām bahvīnām sumahābalaḥ। śuśubhe meghamālābhir āditya iva saṁvṛtaḥ॥03-268-8॥
[मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; राक्षसकोटीनाम् (rākṣasakoṭīnām) - of hosts of rākṣasas; बह्वीनाम् (bahvīnām) - many; सुमहाबलः (sumahābalaḥ) - of very great strength; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone; मेघमालाभिः (meghamālābhiḥ) - with masses of clouds; आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - the sun; इव (iva) - like; संवृतः (saṁvṛtaḥ) - enveloped;]
(In the midst of many hosts of rākṣasas, the one of very great strength shone, enveloped with masses of clouds, like the sun.)
In the midst of the many hordes of rākṣasas, the mighty warrior shone, enveloped by masses of clouds, like the sun. (03-268-8)
स समासाद्य पौलस्त्यममात्यैरभिसंवृतम्। रामसंदेशमामन्त्र्य वाग्मी वक्तुं प्रचक्रमे ॥०३-२६८-९॥
sa samāsādya paulastyam-amātyair-abhisaṁvṛtam। rāma-saṁdeśam-āmantrya vāgmī vaktuṁ pracakrame॥03-268-9॥
[स (sa) - he; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; पौलस्त्यं (paulastyam) - Paulastya (descendant of Pulastya, i.e., Rāvaṇa); अमात्यैः (amātyaiḥ) - by ministers; अभिसंवृतम् (abhisaṁvṛtam) - surrounded; रामसंदेशम् (rāma-saṁdeśam) - Rāma's message; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; वाग्मी (vāgmī) - eloquent (one); वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; प्रचक्रमे (pracakrame) - he began;]
(He, having approached Paulastya (Rāvaṇa) surrounded by ministers, having addressed Rāma's message, the eloquent one began to speak.)
He, having come before Paulastya (Rāvaṇa) amidst his ministers, invoked Rāma's message and, being eloquent, began to speak. (03-268-9)
आह त्वां राघवो राजन्कोसलेन्द्रो महायशाः। प्राप्तकालमिदं वाक्यं तदादत्स्व कुरुष्व च ॥०३-२६८-१०॥
āha tvāṃ rāghavo rājan kosalendro mahāyaśāḥ। prāptakālam idaṃ vākyaṃ tad ādatsva kuruṣva ca ॥03-268-10॥
[आह (āha) - said; त्वां (tvāṃ) - to you; राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - Rāghava (descendant of Raghu, i.e., Rāma); राजन् (rājan) - O king; कोसलेन्द्रः (kosalendraḥ) - the lord of Kosala; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - of great fame; प्राप्तकालम् (prāptakālam) - timely; fitting for the occasion; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; statement; तत् (tat) - that; आदत्स्व (ādatsva) - accept; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; perform; च (ca) - and;]
(Said to you Rāghava, O king, lord of Kosala, of great fame: "Timely this statement that accept, do and." (03-268-10))
Rāghava, the lord of Kosala and a king of great fame, said to you: "This statement is timely; accept it and act upon it." (03-268-10)
अकृतात्मानमासाद्य राजानमनये रतम्। विनश्यन्त्यनयाविष्टा देशाश्च नगराणि च ॥०३-२६८-११॥
akṛtātmānam āsādya rājānam anaye ratam। vinaśyanti anaya-āviṣṭā deśāḥ ca nagarāṇi ca॥03-268-11॥
[अकृतात्मानम् (akṛtātmānam) - who has not subdued his self; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having obtained; राजानम् (rājānam) - a king; अनये (anaye) - in injustice; रतम् (ratam) - delighted; विनश्यन्ति (vinaśyanti) - perish; अनयाविष्टाः (anayāviṣṭāḥ) - overwhelmed by injustice; देशाः (deśāḥ) - countries; च (ca) - and; नगराणि (nagarāṇi) - cities; च (ca) - and;]
(Having obtained a king who has not subdued his self, delighted in injustice, countries and cities overwhelmed by injustice perish.)
When countries and cities come under a king who has not mastered himself and delights in injustice, overwhelmed by unrighteousness, they perish. (03-268-11)
त्वयैकेनापराद्धं मे सीतामाहरता बलात्। वधायानपराद्धानामन्येषां तद्भविष्यति॥०३-२६८-१२॥
tvayāikena aparāddhaṃ me sītām āharatā balāt। vadhāya anaparādhdhānām anyeṣāṃ tad bhaviṣyati॥03-268-12॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; एकेन (ekena) - alone; अपराद्धं (aparāddham) - offended; (a wrong done;) मे (me) - to me; सीताम् (sītām) - Sītā; आहरता (āharatā) - having abducted; (bringing away;) बलात् (balāt) - by force; वधाय (vadhāya) - for killing; अनपराद्धानाम् (anaparādhdhānām) - of the innocent ones; (those not having done wrong;) अन्येषाम् (anyeṣām) - of others; तत् (tat) - that; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will happen; (will be; );]
(By you alone a wrong was done to me by forcibly bringing Sītā; for killing of the innocent others, that will happen.)
It was you alone who wronged me by carrying away Sītā by force; for the killing of those others, innocent of wrongdoing, the blame will be upon you. (03-268-12)
ये त्वया बलदर्पाभ्यामाविष्टेन वनेचराः। ऋषयो हिंसिताः पूर्वं देवाश्चाप्यवमानिताः ॥०३-२६८-१३॥
ye tvayā baladarpa-ābhyām āviṣṭena vane-carāḥ | ṛṣayaḥ hiṁsitāḥ pūrvaṁ devāś ca api avamānitāḥ ॥03-268-13॥
[ये (ye) - who; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; बलदर्पाभ्याम् (baladarpābhyām) - with power and arrogance; आविष्टेन (āviṣṭena) - possessed; वनेचराः (vane-carāḥ) - forest-dwellers; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; हिंसिताः (hiṁsitāḥ) - harmed; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अवमानिताः (avamānitāḥ) - insulted;]
(Who, by you, possessed with power and arrogance, forest-dwellers, sages were harmed previously; gods also were insulted.)
Those forest-dwelling sages who were harmed before, and the gods who also were insulted, were afflicted by you when possessed by power and arrogance. (03-268-13)
राजर्षयश्च निहता रुदन्त्यश्चाहृताः स्त्रियः। तदिदं समनुप्राप्तं फलं तस्यानयस्य ते ॥०३-२६८-१४॥
rājarṣayaś ca nihatā rudantyaś cāhṛtāḥ striyaḥ। tad idaṁ samanuprāptaṁ phalaṁ tasy ānayasya te॥03-268-14॥
[राजर्षयः (rājarṣayaḥ) - royal sages; च (ca) - and; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - slain; रुदन्त्यः (rudantyaḥ) - weeping; च (ca) - and; आहृताः (āhṛtāḥ) - carried away; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; तत् (tat) - that; इदं (idaṁ) - this; समनुप्राप्तं (samanuprāptaṁ) - fully obtained; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; तस्य (tasya) - of that; अनयस्य (anayasya) - of misdeed; ते (te) - your;]
(Royal sages and slain, and weeping carried away women; that this fully obtained fruit of that misdeed of yours.)
Royal sages have been slain, and women, weeping, have been carried away; thus, this is the result that has fully come to you for that misdeed of yours. (03-268-14)
हन्तास्मि त्वां सहामात्यं युध्यस्व पुरुषो भव। पश्य मे धनुषो वीर्यं मानुषस्य निशाचर ॥०३-२६८-१५॥
hantāsmi tvāṃ sahāmātyaṃ yudhyasva puruṣo bhava। paśya me dhanuṣo vīryaṃ mānuṣasya niśācara ॥03-268-15॥
[हन्तास्मि (hantāsmi) - I am about to kill; I will kill; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; सहामात्यम् (sahāmātyam) - with your ministers; युध्यस्व (yudhyasva) - fight; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a man; भव (bhava) - be; पश्य (paśya) - see; मे (me) - my; धनुषः (dhanuṣaḥ) - of the bow; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - power; strength; मानुषस्य (mānuṣasya) - of a human; निशाचर (niśācara) - night-wanderer;]
(I will kill you with your ministers; fight; be a man. See my bow's power, O night-wanderer of a human.)
I shall slay you together with your ministers; fight and show yourself a man. Behold the strength of my bow, O night-roaming demon in human form. (03-268-15)
मुच्यतां जानकी सीता न मे मोक्ष्यसि कर्हिचित्। अराक्षसमिमं लोकं कर्तास्मि निशितैः शरैः ॥०३-२६८-१६॥
mucyatāṃ jānakī sītā na me mokṣyasi karhi cit। arākṣasam imaṃ lokaṃ kartāsmi niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ॥ 03-268-16॥
[मुच्यतां (mucyatāṃ) - let be released; जानकी (jānakī) - Jānakī (daughter of Janaka); सीता (sītā) - Sītā; न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; मोक्ष्यसि (mokṣyasi) - you will be released; कर्हिचित् (karhi cit) - at any time; अराक्षसम् (arākṣasam) - devoid of rākṣasas; इमं (imaṃ) - this; लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; कर्तास्मि (kartāsmi) - I will make; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - with sharp; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - arrows;]
(Let Jānakī Sītā be released; not by me you will ever be released. Devoid of rākṣasas, this world I will make with sharp arrows.)
Let Jānakī Sītā be released; you will never be released by me. I will make this world devoid of rākṣasas with sharp arrows. (03-268-16)
इति तस्य ब्रुवाणस्य दूतस्य परुषं वचः। श्रुत्वा न ममृषे राजा रावणः क्रोधमूर्छितः ॥०३-२६८-१७॥
iti tasya bruvāṇasya dūtasya paruṣam vacaḥ। śrutvā na mamṛṣe rājā rāvaṇaḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ॥03-268-17॥
[इति (iti) - thus; तस्य (tasya) - of him; ब्रुवाणस्य (bruvāṇasya) - speaking; दूतस्य (dūtasya) - of the messenger; परुषं (paruṣam) - harsh; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; न (na) - not; ममृषे (mamṛṣe) - endured; राजा (rājā) - the king; रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; क्रोधमूर्छितः (krodhamūrcchitaḥ) - overcome by anger;]
(Thus, of him speaking, of the messenger, harsh word—having heard, not endured the king Rāvaṇa overcome by anger.)
Hearing those harsh words spoken by the messenger, King Rāvaṇa, overcome by anger, could not tolerate it. (03-268-17)
इङ्गितज्ञास्ततो भर्तुश्चत्वारो रजनीचराः। चतुर्ष्वङ्गेषु जगृहुः शार्दूलमिव पक्षिणः ॥०३-२६८-१८॥
iṅgitajñās tato bhartuś catuvāro rajanīcarāḥ। caturṣvaṅgeṣu jagṛhuḥ śārdūlam iva pakṣiṇaḥ॥03-268-18॥
[इङ्गितज्ञाः (iṅgitajñāḥ) - knowers of gestures; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the master; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; रजनीचराः (rajanīcarāḥ) - night-wanderers; चतुर्षु (caturṣu) - in four; अङ्गेषु (aṅgeṣu) - on the limbs; जगृहुः (jagṛhuḥ) - held; शार्दूलम् (śārdūlam) - tiger; इव (iva) - like; पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - birds;]
(Knower of gestures then of the master four night-wanderers on the four limbs held the tiger like birds.)
Then, four night-wanderers who understood gestures of their master seized him by his four limbs like birds seize a tiger. (03-268-18)
तांस्तथाङ्गेषु संसक्तानङ्गदो रजनीचरान्। आदायैव खमुत्पत्य प्रासादतलमाविशत् ॥०३-२६८-१९॥
tāṃs tathāṅgeṣu saṃsaktānaṅgado rajanīcarān। ādāyaiva kham utpatya prāsādatalaṃ āviśat॥03-268-19॥
[तांस् (tāṃs) - those (them); तथा (tathā) - thus; अङ्गेषु (aṅgeṣu) - on bodies; (limbs; bodies;) संसक्तान् (saṃsaktān) - bound; attached; अङ्गदः (aṅgadaḥ) - Aṅgada (proper noun); रजनीचरान् (rajanīcarān) - night-wanderers; (rakṣasas;) आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; having seized; एव (eva) - indeed; only; खम् (kham) - the sky; उत्पत्य (utpatya) - having sprung up; having leapt; प्रासादतलम् (prāsādatalaṃ) - palace terrace; (roof/platform;) आविशत् (āviśat) - he entered;]
(Those thus upon the bodies bound, Aṅgada the night-wanderers having seized indeed, having sprung into the sky, the palace terrace he entered.)
Thus, Aṅgada seized those night-wanderers clinging to his body, sprang up into the sky, and entered the palace terrace. (03-268-19)
वेगेनोत्पततस्तस्य पेतुस्ते रजनीचराः। भुवि सम्भिन्नहृदयाः प्रहारपरिपीडिताः ॥०३-२६८-२०॥
vegenotpatatas tasya petus te rajanī-carāḥ। bhuvi sambhinna-hṛdayāḥ prahāra-paripīḍitāḥ॥03-268-20॥
[वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; by force; उत्पततः (utpatataḥ) - rising; flying up; तस्य (tasya) - his; पेतुः (petuḥ) - fell; ते (te) - they; रजनीचराः (rajanīcarāḥ) - night-wanderers; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth; सम्भिन्नहृदयाः (sambhinna-hṛdayāḥ) - with broken hearts; प्रहारपरिपीडिताः (prahāra-paripīḍitāḥ) - oppressed by blows;]
(With speed, as he was rising, those night-wanderers fell; on the earth, with broken hearts, oppressed by blows.)
As he swiftly rose up, those night-wanderers fell to the ground, their hearts shattered and afflicted by the blows. (03-268-20)
स मुक्तो हर्म्यशिखरात्तस्मात्पुनरवापतत्। लङ्घयित्वा पुरीं लङ्कां स्वबलस्य समीपतः ॥०३-२६८-२१॥
sa mukto harmyaśikharāttasmāt punar avāpatat। laṅghayitvā purīṃ laṅkāṃ svabalasya samīpataḥ ॥03-268-21॥

(He became like heaps of black gram by night-wanderers; made without monkeys again, the rampart by those of terrible appearance.)
He, by the night-wanderers who resembled heaps of black gram, became (a rampart) once again void of monkeys, formed by those of fearsome appearance. (03-268-34)
पेतुः शूलविभिन्नाङ्गा बहवो वानरर्षभाः। स्तम्भतोरणभग्नाश्च पेतुस्तत्र निशाचराः ॥०३-२६८-३५॥
petuḥ śūla-vibhinna-aṅgā bahavo vānararṣabhāḥ। stambha-toraṇa-bhagnāś-ca petus-tatra niśācarāḥ॥03-268-35॥

(Hair-to-hair occurring battle of the rākṣasas with the vānaras together, with nails and with teeth, of the heroes biting indeed one another.)
A hair-to-hair combat arose between the rākṣasas and the vānaras together, as the heroes bit each other with their nails and teeth. (03-268-36)
निष्टनन्तो ह्युभयतस्तत्र वानरराक्षसाः। हता निपतिता भूमौ न मुञ्चन्ति परस्परम् ॥०३-२६८-३७॥
niṣṭananto hyubhayatastatra vānararākṣasāḥ। hatā nipatitā bhūmau na muñcanti parasparam॥03-268-37॥

saumitrir api nārācair dṛḍha-dhanvā jita-klamaḥ। ādiśyādiśya durga-sthān pātayām āsa rākṣasān॥03-268-39॥
[सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - son of Sumitra; अपि (api) - also; moreover; नाराचैः (nārācaiḥ) - with iron arrows; दृढधन्वा (dṛḍha-dhanvā) - having a strong bow; जितक्लमः (jita-klamaḥ) - one who has overcome fatigue; आदिश्य आदिश्य (ādiśya ādiśya) - having aimed again and again; दुर्गस्थान् (durga-sthān) - those located in fortresses; पातयामास (pātayām āsa) - caused to fall; राक्षसान् (rākṣasān) - demons;]
(Son of Sumitra also, with iron arrows, having a strong bow, overcoming fatigue, having aimed again and again at those located in fortresses, caused the demons to fall.)
The son of Sumitra too, wielding his strong bow and overcoming fatigue, repeatedly aimed his iron arrows at the demons stationed in fortress positions and brought them down. (03-268-39)
ततः प्रत्यवहारोऽभूत्सैन्यानां राघवाज्ञया। कृते विमर्दे लङ्कायां लब्धलक्षो जयोत्तरः ॥०३-२६८-४०॥
tataḥ pratyavahāro'bhūtsainyānāṃ rāghavājñayā। kṛte vimarde laṅkāyāṃ labdhalakṣo jayottaraḥ ॥03-268-40॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रत्यवहारः (pratyavahāraḥ) - retreat; अभूत् (abhūt) - there was; सैन्यानाम् (sainyānām) - of the armies; राघवाज्ञया (rāghavājñayā) - by Rāghava's order; कृते (kṛte) - when done; विमर्दे (vimarde) - in the battle; लङ्कायाम् (laṅkāyām) - in Laṅkā; लब्धलक्षः (labdhalakṣaḥ) - one whose aim was achieved; जयोत्तरः (jayottaraḥ) - having victory as a result;]
(Then retreat there was of the armies by Rāghava's order. When battle had been done in Laṅkā, one whose aim was achieved, victory as the result.)
Then, by Rāghava's order, the armies retreated. After the battle was fought in Laṅkā, with the objective accomplished, victory was the outcome. (03-268-40)
