ततो विनिर्याय पुरात्कुम्भकर्णः सहानुगः। अपश्यत्कपिसैन्यं तज्जितकाश्यग्रतः स्थितम् ॥०३-२७१-१॥
tato viniryāya purāt kumbhakarṇaḥ sahānugaḥ। apaśyat kapisainyaṃ tajjitakāśy agrataḥ sthitam॥03-271-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; विनिर्याय (viniryāya) - having gone out; departed; पुरात् (purāt) - from the city; कुम्भकर्णः (kumbhakarṇaḥ) - Kumbhakarna (proper noun); सह (saha) - together with; with; अनुगः (anugaḥ) - followers; attendants; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; कपिसैन्यम् (kapisainyam) - the army of monkeys; तत् (tat) - that; जितकाशि (jitakāśi) - conquering in splendor; victorious in glory; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; before; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; positioned;]
(Then having departed from the city, Kumbhakarna, together with his attendants, saw the army of monkeys, that was conquering in splendor, standing before (him).)
Then, Kumbhakarna left the city with his followers and saw the army of monkeys, resplendent in victory, standing before him. (03-271-1)
तमभ्येत्याशु हरयः परिवार्य समन्ततः। अभ्यघ्नंश्च महाकायैर्बहुभिर्जगतीरुहैः ॥ करजैरतुदंश्चान्ये विहाय भयमुत्तमम् ॥०३-२७१-२॥
tam abhyetya āśu harayaḥ parivārya samantataḥ। abhyaghnan ca mahākāyaiḥ bahubhiḥ jagatī-ruhaiḥ॥ karajaiḥ atudaṁś ca anye vihāya bhayam uttamam॥03-271-2॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; आशु (āśu) - swiftly; हरयः (harayaḥ) - monkeys; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; अभ्यघ्नन् (abhyaghnan) - struck; च (ca) - and; महाकायैः (mahākāyaiḥ) - with huge bodies; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - with many; जगतीरुहैः (jagatī-ruhaiḥ) - with trees; करजैः (karajaiḥ) - with nails; अतुदन् (atudan) - pierced; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; विहाय (vihāya) - casting aside; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - great;]
(Him having approached swiftly, the monkeys having surrounded on all sides, struck (him) with huge bodies, with many trees; and others, having cast aside great fear, also pierced (him) with nails.)
The monkeys swiftly approached him and, surrounding him on all sides, struck him with their huge bodies and with many trees; others, having set aside great fear, also pierced him with their nails. (03-271-2)
बहुधा युध्यमानास्ते युद्धमार्गैः प्लवङ्गमाः। नानाप्रहरणैर्भीमं राक्षसेन्द्रमताडयन् ॥०३-२७१-३॥
bahudhā yudhyamānās te yuddha-mārgaiḥ plavaṅgamāḥ। nānā-praharaṇair bhīmaṃ rākṣasendrām atāḍayan ॥03-271-3॥
[बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; युध्यमानाः (yudhyamānāḥ) - fighting; ते (te) - they; युद्धमार्गैः (yuddha-mārgaiḥ) - by means of battle methods; प्लवङ्गमाः (plavaṅgamāḥ) - the vanaras (monkeys); नानाप्रहरणैः (nānā-praharaṇaiḥ) - with various weapons; भीमं (bhīmam) - terrible; राक्षसेन्द्रम् (rākṣasendram) - the king of rakṣasas (demons); अताडयन् (atāḍayan) - they struck;]
(In many ways fighting, they with battle methods, the vanaras, with various weapons, the terrible king of rakṣasas they struck.)
The vanaras, fighting in many ways with various strategies and using various weapons, struck the dreadful king of the rakshasas. (03-271-3)
स ताड्यमानः प्रहसन्भक्षयामास वानरान्। पनसं च गवाक्षं च वज्रबाहुं च वानरम् ॥०३-२७१-४॥
sa tāḍyamānaḥ prahasan bhakṣayāmāsa vānarān। panasam ca gavākṣam ca vajrabāhuṃ ca vānaram॥03-271-4॥

तद्दृष्ट्वा व्यथनं कर्म कुम्भकर्णस्य रक्षसः। उदक्रोशन्परित्रस्तास्तारप्रभृतयस्तदा ॥०३-२७१-५॥
tad dṛṣṭvā vyathanaṃ karma kumbhakarṇasya rakṣasaḥ। udakrośan paritrastāḥ tāra-prabhṛtayaḥ tadā॥03-271-5॥

(That having seen, the distressful action of Kumbhakarṇa the Rakṣasa, cried out terrified Tāra and the others then.)
Seeing the terrible act of Kumbhakarṇa the Rakṣasa, Tāra and the rest, terrified, then cried out. (03-271-5)
तं तारमुच्चैः क्रोशन्तमन्यांश्च हरियूथपान्। अभिदुद्राव सुग्रीवः कुम्भकर्णमपेतभीः ॥०३-२७१-६॥
taṃ tāram uccaiḥ krośantam anyāṃś ca hariyūthapān। abhidudrāva sugrīvaḥ kumbhakarṇam apetabhīḥ ॥03-271-6॥

Sugrīva, without fear, rushed toward Kumbhakarṇa—toward Tāra, who was loudly crying out, and the other monkey chiefs. (03-271-6)
ततोऽभिपत्य वेगेन कुम्भकर्णं महामनाः। शालेन जघ्निवान्मूर्ध्नि बलेन कपिकुञ्जरः ॥०३-२७१-७॥
tato' abhipatya vegen kumbhakarṇaṃ mahāmanāḥ। śālena jaghnivān mūrdhni balena kapikuñjaraḥ ॥03-271-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभिपत्य (abhipatya) - approaching; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; कुम्भकर्णं (kumbhakarṇam) - Kumbhakarṇa (proper noun); महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded one; शालेन (śālena) - with a śāla tree; जघ्निवान् (jaghnivān) - struck; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; बलेन (balena) - with force; कपिकुञ्जरः (kapikuñjaraḥ) - monkey-elephant (epithet for a powerful monkey);]
(Then, having approached with speed, the great-minded one struck Kumbhakarṇa on the head with a śāla tree, with force, the monkey-elephant.)
Then the great-minded monkey, possessing the strength of an elephant, swiftly approached and struck Kumbhakarṇa on the head with a śāla tree. (03-271-7)
स महात्मा महावेगः कुम्भकर्णस्य मूर्धनि। बिभेद शालं सुग्रीवो न चैवाव्यथयत्कपिः ॥०३-२७१-८॥
sa mahātmā mahāvegaḥ kumbhakarṇasya mūrdhani. bibheda śālaṃ sugrīvo na caivāvyathayat kapiḥ ॥03-271-8॥
[स (sa) - he; महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled; महावेगः (mahāvegaḥ) - with great speed; कुम्भकर्णस्य (kumbhakarṇasya) - of Kumbhakarṇa; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on the head; बिभेद (bibheda) - he struck; शालं (śālaṃ) - a śāla tree; सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugrīva; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अव्यथयत् (avyathayat) - disturbed; कपिः (kapiḥ) - the monkey;]
(He, the great-souled, with great speed, on the head of Kumbhakarṇa, struck a śāla tree; Sugrīva and indeed did not disturb the monkey.)
Sugrīva, the great-souled and swift, struck a śāla tree upon the head of Kumbhakarṇa, but the monkey was not in the least disturbed. (03-271-8)
ततो विनद्य प्रहसञ्शालस्पर्शविबोधितः। दोर्भ्यामादाय सुग्रीवं कुम्भकर्णोऽहरद्बलात् ॥०३-२७१-९॥
tato vinadya prahasañ-śāla-sparśa-vibodhitaḥ। dorbhyām ādāya sugrīvam kumbhakarṇo'harad balāt॥03-271-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विनद्य (vinadya) - having roared; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - laughing; शालस्पर्शविबोधितः (śāla-sparśa-vibodhitaḥ) - awakened by the touch of the śāla trees; दोर्‍भ्याम् (dorbhyām) - with (his) two arms; आदाय (ādāya) - having seized; सुग्रीवम् (sugrīvam) - Sugrīva; कुम्भकर्णः (kumbhakarṇaḥ) - Kumbhakarṇa; अहरत् (aharat) - carried off; बलात् (balāt) - by force;]
(Then, having roared, laughing, awakened by the touch of the śāla trees, with his two arms having seized Sugrīva, Kumbhakarṇa carried off by force.)
Then Kumbhakarṇa, awakened by the touch of the śāla trees, roaring and laughing, seized Sugrīva with his two arms and carried him off by force. (03-271-9)
ह्रियमाणं तु सुग्रीवं कुम्भकर्णेन रक्षसा। अवेक्ष्याभ्यद्रवद्वीरः सौमित्रिर्मित्रनन्दनः ॥०३-२७१-१०॥
hriyamāṇaṃ tu sugrīvaṃ kumbhakarṇena rakṣasā। avekṣyābhyadravad vīraḥ saumitrir mitranandanaḥ ॥03-271-10॥
[ह्रियमाणं (hriyamāṇaṃ) - being carried away; तु (tu) - but; सुग्रीवं (sugrīvam) - Sugriva (proper name, masculine accusative singular); कुम्भकर्णेन (kumbhakarṇena) - by Kumbhakarṇa; रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by the rakshasa (demon); अवेक्ष्य (avekṣya) - having seen; अभ्यद्रवत् (abhyadravat) - he rushed towards; वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - Saumitrī (son of Sumitrā; proper name, i.e. Lakṣmaṇa); मित्रनन्दनः (mitranandanaḥ) - delighter of Mitra (epithet for Saumitrī);]
(But seeing Sugriva being carried away by Kumbhakarṇa the rakshasa, the hero Saumitrī, delighter of Mitra, rushed towards (him).)
But when the heroic Saumitrī, the delight of Mitra, saw Sugriva being carried away by Kumbhakarṇa the rakshasa, he rushed at him. (03-271-10)
सोऽभिपत्य महावेगं रुक्मपुङ्खं महाशरम्। प्राहिणोत्कुम्भकर्णाय लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ॥०३-२७१-११॥
so'bhipatya mahāvegaṃ rukmapuṅkhaṃ mahāśaram। prāhiṇotkumbhakarṇāya lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā ॥03-271-11॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अभिपत्य (abhipatya) - having approached; महावेगं (mahāvegam) - of great speed; रुक्मपुङ्खं (rukmapuṅkham) - with golden-feathered; महाशरम् (mahāśaram) - great arrow; प्राहिणोत् (prāhiṇot) - sent forth; कुम्भकर्णाय (kumbhakarṇāya) - to Kumbhakarṇa; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakṣmaṇa; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes;]
(He, having approached, of great speed the golden-feathered great arrow, sent forth to Kumbhakarṇa Lakṣmaṇa, destroyer of enemy heroes.)
Lakṣmaṇa, the destroyer of enemy heroes, having approached, sent forth at Kumbhakarṇa a great arrow with golden feathers, swift as a thunderbolt. (03-271-11)
स तस्य देहावरणं भित्त्वा देहं च सायकः। जगाम दारयन्भूमिं रुधिरेण समुक्षितः ॥०३-२७१-१२॥
sa tasya dehāvaraṇaṃ bhittvā dehaṃ ca sāyakaḥ। jagāma dārayan bhūmiṃ rudhireṇa samukṣitaḥ॥03-271-12॥
[स (sa) - he; तस्य (tasya) - his; देहावरणं (dehāvaraṇam) - body-covering; भित्त्वा (bhittvā) - having pierced; देहं (deham) - body; च (ca) - and; सायकः (sāyakaḥ) - arrow; जगाम (jagāma) - went; दारयन् (dārayan) - tearing; भूमिं (bhūmim) - earth; रुधिरेण (rudhireṇa) - with blood; समुक्षितः (samukṣitaḥ) - moistened;]
(He, his body-covering having pierced, and body, the arrow went, tearing earth, with blood moistened.)
The arrow, having pierced his armor and his body, continued onward, tearing into the earth, moistened with blood. (03-271-12)
तथा स भिन्नहृदयः समुत्सृज्य कपीश्वरम्। कुम्भकर्णो महेष्वासः प्रगृहीतशिलायुधः ॥ अभिदुद्राव सौमित्रिमुद्यम्य महतीं शिलाम् ॥०३-२७१-१३॥
tathā sa bhinnahṛdayaḥ samutsṛjya kapīśvaram। kumbhakarṇo maheṣvāsaḥ pragṛhītaśilāyudhaḥ ॥ abhidudrāva saumitrimudyamya mahatīṃ śilām ॥03-271-13॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; स (sa) - he; भिन्नहृदयः (bhinna-hṛdayaḥ) - with shattered heart; समुत्सृज्य (samutsṛjya) - having abandoned; कपीश्वरम् (kapīśvaram) - the lord of monkeys; कुम्भकर्णः (kumbhakarṇaḥ) - Kumbhakarṇa; महेष्वासः (maheṣvāsaḥ) - the great archer; प्रगृहीतशिलायुधः (pragṛhīta-śilāyudhaḥ) - holding a stone weapon; अभिदुद्राव (abhidudrāva) - he charged at; सौमित्रिम् (saumitriṃ) - Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa); उद्यम्य (udyamya) - having lifted up; महतीं (mahatīm) - great; शिलाम् (śilām) - rock;]
(Thus he, with shattered heart, having abandoned the lord of monkeys, Kumbhakarṇa, the great archer, holding a stone weapon, he charged at Saumitri, having lifted up a great rock.)
Thus, with his heart shattered, Kumbhakarṇa, the great archer, after abandoning the lord of the monkeys, grasped a stone weapon and rushed toward Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), lifting a huge rock. (03-271-13)
तस्याभिद्रवतस्तूर्णं क्षुराभ्यामुच्छ्रितौ करौ। चिच्छेद निशिताग्राभ्यां स बभूव चतुर्भुजः ॥०३-२७१-१४॥
tasyābhidravatas tūrṇaṃ kṣurābhyām ucchritau karau। ciccheda niśitāgrābhyāṃ sa babhūva caturbhujaḥ ॥03-271-14॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; आभिद्रवत: (ābhidravataḥ) - as (he) rushed towards; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; क्षुराभ्याम् (kṣurābhyām) - with two razors; उच्छ्रितौ (ucchritau) - upraised; करौ (karau) - both hands; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - (he) cut off; निशिताग्राभ्याम् (niśitāgrābhyām) - with edges sharp; स (sa) - he; बभूव (babhūva) - became; चतुर्भुजः (caturbhujaḥ) - four-armed;]
(Of him, as (he) rushed towards, quickly, with two razors, the upraised both hands, (he) cut off, with sharp edges; he became four-armed.)
As he rushed quickly towards him, (he) cut off his upraised hands with two razor-edged weapons of sharp points; then he became four-armed. (03-271-14)
तानप्यस्य भुजान्सर्वान्प्रगृहीतशिलायुधान्। क्षुरैश्चिच्छेद लघ्वस्त्रं सौमित्रिः प्रतिदर्शयन् ॥०३-२७१-१५॥
tān apy asya bhujān sarvān pragṛhītaśilāyudhān। kṣuraiś ciccheda laghv astraṃ saumitriḥ pratidarśayan॥03-271-15॥

(Them also his arms all holding stone-weapons with knives he cut off, light weapon, the son of Sumitra showing.)
He, the son of Sumitra, also cut off all his arms holding stone-weapons with knives, demonstrating his light weapon. (03-271-15)
स बभूवातिकायश्च बहुपादशिरोभुजः। तं ब्रह्मास्त्रेण सौमित्रिर्ददाहाद्रिचयोपमम् ॥०३-२७१-१६॥
sa babhūvātikāyaś ca bahupādaśirobhujaḥ. taṃ brahmāstreṇa saumitrir dadāhādricayopamam ॥03-271-16॥
[स (sa) - he; बभूव (babhūva) - became; अतिकायः (atikāyaḥ) - of immense body; च (ca) - and; बहुपादशिरोभुजः (bahupādaśirobhujaḥ) - having many feet, heads, and arms; तं (taṃ) - him; ब्रह्मास्त्रेण (brahmāstreṇa) - by the Brahma weapon; सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - Saumitri (Lakshmana); ददाह (dadāha) - burnt; अद्रिचय-उपमम् (adricaya-upamam) - like a mountain heap;]
(He became of immense body and having many feet, heads, and arms; him, by the Brahma-weapon, Saumitri burnt, like a mountain heap.)
He became of enormous size, with many feet, heads, and arms. Saumitri (Lakshmana) burnt him with the Brahma weapon, like a heap of mountains. (03-271-16)
स पपात महावीर्यो दिव्यास्त्राभिहतो रणे। महाशनिविनिर्दग्धः पादपोऽङ्कुरवानिव ॥०३-२७१-१७॥
sa papāta mahāvīryo divyāstrābhihato raṇe। mahāśanivinirdagdhaḥ pādapo'ṅkuravāniva॥03-271-17॥
[स (sa) - he; पपात (papāta) - fell down; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great might; दिव्यास्त्राभिहतः (divyāstrābhihataḥ) - struck by celestial weapons; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; महाशनिविनिर्दग्धः (mahāśanivinirdagdhaḥ) - burned up by a great thunderbolt; पादपः (pādapaḥ) - tree; अङ्कुरवान् (aṅkuravān) - having sprouts (i.e., with shoots); इव (iva) - like;]
(He fell, of great might, struck by celestial weapons in battle, like a tree, with shoots, burned up by a great thunderbolt.)
He of great might fell in battle, struck by celestial weapons, like a tree with young shoots scorched by a great thunderbolt. (03-271-17)
तं दृष्ट्वा वृत्रसङ्काशं कुम्भकर्णं तरस्विनम्। गतासुं पतितं भूमौ राक्षसाः प्राद्रवन्भयात् ॥०३-२७१-१८॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā vṛtrasaṅkāśaṁ kumbhakarṇaṁ tarasvinam। gatāsuṁ patitaṁ bhūmau rākṣasāḥ prādravanbhayāt ॥03-271-18॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; वृत्रसङ्काशं (vṛtrasaṅkāśam) - resembling Vṛtra; कुम्भकर्णं (kumbhakarṇam) - Kumbhakarṇa; तरस्विनम् (tarasvinam) - mighty; गतासुः (gatāsuḥ) - lifeless; पतितम् (patitam) - fallen; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - the rākṣasas; प्राद्रवन् (prādravan) - ran away; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear;]
(Having seen him (Kumbhakarṇa), resembling Vṛtra, mighty, lifeless, fallen on the ground, the rākṣasas ran away out of fear.)
When they saw the mighty Kumbhakarṇa, who resembled Vṛtra, fallen lifeless on the ground, the rākṣasas fled in fear. (03-271-18)
तथा तान्द्रवतो योधान्दृष्ट्वा तौ दूषणानुजौ। अवस्थाप्याथ सौमित्रिं सङ्क्रुद्धावभ्यधावताम् ॥०३-२७१-१९॥
tathā tān dravato yodhān dṛṣṭvā tau dūṣaṇānujau | avasthāpya atha saumitriṁ saṅkruddhau abhyadhāvatām ||03-271-19||
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तान् (tān) - those; द्रवतः (dravataḥ) - fleeing; योधन् (yodhān) - warriors; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तौ (tau) - those two; दूषणानुजौ (dūṣaṇānujau) - the younger brothers of Dūṣaṇa; अवस्थाप्य (avasthāpya) - having stationed; अथ (atha) - then; सौमित्रिं (saumitriṁ) - Saumitrī (Lakṣmaṇa); सङ्क्रुद्धौ (saṅkruddhau) - greatly enraged; अभ्यधावताम् (abhyadhāvatām) - rushed towards;]
(Thus, having seen those fleeing warriors, those two younger brothers of Dūṣaṇa, having stationed Saumitrī, then greatly enraged, rushed towards (the enemy).)
Thus, seeing the warriors fleeing, those two younger brothers of Dūṣaṇa, after placing Saumitrī (Lakṣmaṇa) in position, then, greatly enraged, rushed forward. (03-271-19)
तावाद्रवन्तौ सङ्क्रुद्धौ वज्रवेगप्रमाथिनौ। प्रतिजग्राह सौमित्रिर्विनद्योभौ पतत्रिभिः ॥०३-२७१-२०॥
tāvādravantau saṅkruddhau vajravegapramāthinau. pratijagrāha saumitrirvinadyobhau patatribhiḥ ॥03-271-20॥
[तावात् (tāvāt) - then; at that moment; द्रवन्तौ (dravantau) - the two who were rushing; सङ्क्रुद्धौ (saṅkruddhau) - both very enraged; वज्रवेगप्रमाथिनौ (vajra-vega-pramāthinau) - like thunderbolt-speed crushers; (vajra - thunderbolt; vega - speed; pramāthinau - crushers;) प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - (he) opposed; resisted; सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - Saumitri; (another name for Lakshmana, son of Sumitra;) विनद्य (vinadya) - shouting; roaring; उभौ (ubhau) - both; पतत्रिभिः (patatribhiḥ) - with arrows; (lit. winged by feathers;);]
(Then, the two who were rushing, both very enraged, like thunderbolt-speed crushers, Saumitri opposed, shouting, both with arrows.)
At that moment, Saumitri, roaring, confronted both of the infuriated assailants, who rushed with the force and swiftness of thunderbolts, with his arrows. (03-271-20)
ततः सुतुमुलं युद्धमभवल्लोमहर्षणम्। दूषणानुजयोः पार्थ लक्ष्मणस्य च धीमतः ॥०३-२७१-२१॥
tataḥ sutumulaṁ yuddham abhavad lomaharṣaṇam। dūṣaṇānujayoḥ pārtha lakṣmaṇasya ca dhīmataḥ ॥03-271-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सुतुमुलं (sutumulaṁ) - very tumultuous; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; अभवत्त् (abhavat) - arose; लोमहर्षणम् (lomaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising; दूषण-अनुजयोः (dūṣaṇa-anujayoḥ) - of the brothers of Dūṣaṇa; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; लक्ष्मणस्य (lakṣmaṇasya) - of Lakṣmaṇa; च (ca) - and; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise;]
(Then a very tumultuous, hair-raising battle arose, O son of Prithā, between the brothers of Dūṣaṇa and the wise Lakṣmaṇa.)
Then, O son of Prithā, a very tumultuous and hair-raising battle occurred between Dūṣaṇa's brothers and the wise Lakṣmaṇa. (03-271-21)
महता शरवर्षेण राक्षसौ सोऽभ्यवर्षत। तौ चापि वीरौ सङ्क्रुद्धावुभौ तौ समवर्षताम् ॥०३-२७१-२२॥
mahatā śaravarṣeṇa rākṣasau so'bhyavarṣata। tau cāpi vīrau saṅkruddhāvubhau tau samavarṣatām ॥03-271-22॥
[महता (mahatā) - with great;, शरवर्षेण (śaravarṣeṇa) - with shower of arrows;, राक्षसौ (rākṣasau) - (the) two rākṣasas;, सः (saḥ) - he;, अभ्यवर्षत (abhyavarṣata) - showered upon;, तौ (tau) - those two;, च (ca) - and;, अपि (api) - also;, वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes;, सङ्क्रुद्धौ (saṅkruddhau) - very enraged;, उभौ (ubhau) - both;, तौ (tau) - those two;, समवर्षताम् (samavarṣatām) - showered (in return);]
(With a great shower of arrows, he showered (them upon) the two rākṣasas. And those two heroes, very enraged, both those two showered (arrows) in return.)
With a great shower of arrows he attacked the two rākṣasas, and those two heroes, furious, both returned the shower of arrows. (03-271-22)
मुहूर्तमेवमभवद्वज्रवेगप्रमाथिनोः। सौमित्रेश्च महाबाहोः सम्प्रहारः सुदारुणः ॥०३-२७१-२३॥
muhūrtam evam abhavad vajra-vega-pramāthinoḥ. saumitreś ca mahā-bāhoḥ samprahāraḥ sudāruṇaḥ ॥03-271-23॥
[मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - an instant; a short period (of time); एवम् (evam) - in this way; thus; अभवत् (abhavat) - there was; occurred; वज्रवेगप्रमाथिनोः (vajra-vega-pramāthinoḥ) - of (the two) exceedingly powerful (having the force of a thunderbolt); सौमित्रेः (saumitriḥ) - of Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa); च (ca) - and; महाबाहोः (mahā-bāhoḥ) - of the mighty-armed; सम्प्रहारः (samprahāraḥ) - blow; stroke; attack; सुदारुणः (su-dāruṇaḥ) - very fierce; exceedingly terrible;]
(For an instant, in this way, there was of the two with thunderbolt-like force—of Saumitri and of the mighty-armed—a very fierce blow.)
Thus, in that instant, there occurred a very fierce blow between the two of thunderbolt-like force—Saumitri, the mighty-armed, among them. (03-271-23)
अथाद्रिशृङ्गमादाय हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः। अभिद्रुत्याददे प्राणान्वज्रवेगस्य रक्षसः ॥०३-२७१-२४॥
athādriśṛṅgam ādāya hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ। abhidrutya ādade prāṇān vajravegasya rakṣasaḥ॥03-271-24॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अद्रि-शृङ्गम् (adri-śṛṅgam) - mountain-peak; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; हनूमान् (hanūmān) - Hanuman; मारुतात्मजः (mārutātmajaḥ) - son of Marut (Wind); अभिद्रुत्य (abhidrutya) - having rushed at; आददे (ādade) - took; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; वज्रवेगस्य (vajravegasya) - of Vajravega; रक्षसः (rakṣasaḥ) - of the demon;]
(Then, having taken a mountain-peak, Hanuman, son of Marut, having rushed at, took the lives of Vajravega, the demon.)
Then Hanuman, the son of Marut, having seized a mountain-peak, rushed at Vajravega, the demon, and took his life. (03-271-24)
नीलश्च महता ग्राव्णा दूषणावरजं हरिः। प्रमाथिनमभिद्रुत्य प्रममाथ महाबलः ॥०३-२७१-२५॥
nīlaś ca mahatā grāvṇā dūṣaṇāvarajaṃ hariḥ | pramāthinam abhidr̥tya pramamātha mahābalaḥ ॥03-271-25॥
[नीलः (nīlaḥ) - Nīla; (name of a person); च (ca) - and; महता (mahatā) - with a great; ग्राव्णा (grāvṇā) - stone; दूषणावरजम् (dūṣaṇāvarajam) - Dūṣaṇa's younger brother; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; (epithet, here: monkey-chief; or possibly 'the tawny one'); प्रमाथिनम् (pramāthinam) - attacker; अभिद्रुत्य (abhidr̥tya) - having rushed at; प्रममाथ (pramamātha) - smashed; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty one;]

ततः प्रावर्तत पुनः सङ्ग्रामः कटुकोदयः। रामरावणसैन्यानामन्योन्यमभिधावताम् ॥०३-२७१-२६॥
tataḥ prāvartata punaḥ saṅgrāmaḥ kaṭukodayaḥ। rāma-rāvaṇa-sainyānām anyonyam abhi-dhāvatām ॥03-271-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रावर्तत (prāvartata) - arose; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सङ्ग्रामः (saṅgrāmaḥ) - battle; कटुक-उदयः (kaṭuka-udayaḥ) - fierce-arising; राम-रावण-सैन्यानाम् (rāma-rāvaṇa-sainyānām) - of the armies of Rāma and Rāvaṇa; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyaṃ) - one another; अभि-धावताम् (abhi-dhāvatām) - attacking;]
(Then arose again the battle, fierce in arising, of the armies of Rāma and Rāvaṇa, as they attacked one another.)
Then once again a fierce battle broke out between the armies of Rāma and Rāvaṇa as they attacked each other. (03-271-26)
शतशो नैरृतान्वन्या जघ्नुर्वन्यांश्च नैरृताः। नैरृतास्तत्र वध्यन्ते प्रायशो न तु वानराः ॥०३-२७१-२७॥
śataśo nairṛtān vanyā jaghnur vanyāṃś ca nairṛtāḥ। nairṛtās tatra vadhyante prāyaśo na tu vānarāḥ॥03-271-27॥
[शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; नैरृतान् (nairṛtān) - Nairṛtas (demons); वन्याः (vanyāḥ) - the forest-dwellers; जघ्नुः (jaghnuḥ) - killed; वन्यान् (vanyān) - the forest-dwellers; च (ca) - and; नैरृताः (nairṛtāḥ) - the Nairṛtas (demons); नैरृताः (nairṛtāḥ) - the Nairṛtas (demons); तत्र (tatra) - there; वध्यन्ते (vadhyante) - are slain; प्रायशः (prāyaśaḥ) - generally; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; वानराः (vānarāḥ) - the monkeys;]
(By hundreds, Nairṛtas are killed by the forest-dwellers, and the Nairṛtas (kill) the forest-dwellers. There the Nairṛtas are slain generally, but not the monkeys.)
By the hundreds, the Nairṛtas are being killed by the forest-dwellers, and the Nairṛtas also slay the forest-dwellers. There, in general, it is the Nairṛtas who are slain, not the monkeys. (03-271-27)
