ततः श्रुत्वा हतं सङ्ख्ये कुम्भकर्णं सहानुगम्। प्रहस्तं च महेष्वासं धूम्राक्षं चातितेजसम् ॥०३-२७२-१॥
tataḥ śrutvā hataṁ saṅkhye kumbhakarṇaṁ sahānugam। prahastaṁ ca maheṣvāsaṁ dhūmrākṣaṁ cātitejasam ॥03-272-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; हतं (hataṁ) - slain; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; कुम्भकर्णं (kumbhakarṇam) - Kumbhakarṇa; सहानुगम् (sahānugam) - together with his followers; प्रहस्तं (prahastam) - Prahasta; च (ca) - and; महेष्वासं (maheṣvāsaṁ) - the mighty archer; धूम्राक्षं (dhūmrākṣam) - Dhūmrākṣa; च (ca) - and; अतितेजसम् (atitejasam) - of exceeding energy;]
(Then, having heard that in battle Kumbhakarṇa together with his followers was slain, and (that) Prahasta the mighty archer (and) Dhūmrākṣa of exceeding energy (were slain).)
Then he heard that Kumbhakarṇa along with his followers, as well as Prahasta the mighty archer and Dhūmrākṣa of great energy, had been slain in battle. (03-272-1)
पुत्रमिन्द्रजितं शूरं रावणः प्रत्यभाषत। जहि रामममित्रघ्न सुग्रीवं च सलक्ष्मणम् ॥०३-२७२-२॥
putram indrajitaṃ śūraṃ rāvaṇaḥ pratyabhāṣata। jahi rāma-m-amitra-ghna sugrīvaṃ ca sa-lakṣmaṇam॥03-272-2॥
[पुत्रम् (putram) - son; इन्द्रजितम् (indrajitam) - Indrajit; शूरम् (śūram) - valiant; रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed; जहि (jahi) - slay; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma; अमित्रघ्न (amitra-ghna) - foe-slayer; सुग्रीवम् (sugrīvam) - Sugrīva; च (ca) - and; सलक्ष्मणम् (sa-lakṣmaṇam) - with Lakṣmaṇa;]
(Rāvaṇa addressed his valiant son Indrajit: Slay Rāma, foe-slayer, Sugrīva, and (him) with Lakṣmaṇa.)
Rāvaṇa addressed his valiant son Indrajit: "Kill Rāma, the enemy-destroyer, Sugrīva, and Lakṣmaṇa as well." (03-272-2)
त्वया हि मम सत्पुत्र यशो दीप्तमुपार्जितम्। जित्वा वज्रधरं सङ्ख्ये सहस्राक्षं शचीपतिम् ॥०३-२७२-३॥
tvayā hi mama satputra yaśo dīptamupārjitam। jitvā vajradharaṃ saṅkhye sahasrākṣaṃ śacīpatim ॥03-272-3॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; सत्पुत्र (satputra) - good son; यशो (yaśaḥ) - fame; दीप्तम् (dīptam) - illustrious; उपार्जितम् (upārjitam) - acquired; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; वज्रधरम् (vajradhanam) - the wielder of the thunderbolt; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; सहस्राक्षम् (sahasrākṣam) - thousand-eyed; शचीपतिम् (śacīpatim) - the lord of Śacī;]
(By you indeed, my good son, fame illustrious was acquired, having conquered the wielder of the thunderbolt in battle, the thousand-eyed, lord of Śacī.)
Indeed, my good son, illustrious fame has been acquired by you by defeating the wielder of the thunderbolt, the thousand-eyed lord of Śacī, in battle. (03-272-3)
अन्तर्हितः प्रकाशो वा दिव्यैर्दत्तवरैः शरैः। जहि शत्रूनमित्रघ्न मम शस्त्रभृतां वर ॥०३-२७२-४॥
antarhitaḥ prakaśo vā divyaiḥ dattavaraiḥ śaraiḥ। jahi śatrūn amitra-ghna mama śastra-bhṛtāṃ vara ॥03-272-4॥
[अन्तर्हितः (antarhitaḥ) - hidden; प्रकाशः (prakaśaḥ) - brightness; वा (vā) - or; दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) - by divine; दत्तवरैः (datta-varaiḥ) - bestowed-as-boons; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - by arrows; जहि (jahi) - slay; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; अमित्रघ्न (amitra-ghna) - destroyer-of-foes; मम (mama) - my; शस्त्रभृतां (śastra-bhṛtām) - among weapon-bearers; वर (vara) - best;]
(Hidden or brightness, by divine arrows bestowed as boons, slay enemies, O destroyer of foes, my best among weapon-bearers.)
Whether hidden or visible, with divine arrows bestowed as boons, slay the enemies, O destroyer of foes, my best among wielders of weapons. (03-272-4)
रामलक्ष्मणसुग्रीवाः शरस्पर्शं न तेऽनघ। समर्थाः प्रतिसंसोढुं कुतस्तदनुयायिनः ॥०३-२७२-५॥
rāma-lakṣmaṇa-sugrīvāḥ śara-sparśaṃ na te'naṅgha। samarthāḥ prati-saṃsoḍhuṃ kutas tad-anuyāyinaḥ ॥03-272-5॥
[रामलक्ष्मणसुग्रीवाः (rāma-lakṣmaṇa-sugrīvāḥ) - Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sugrīva; शरस्पर्शं (śara-sparśam) - touch of arrows; न (na) - not; ते (te) - they; अनघ (anaṅgha) - O sinless one; समर्थाः (samarthāḥ) - capable; प्रतिसंसोढुं (prati-saṃsoḍhum) - to endure in return; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; तदनुयायिनः (tad-anuyāyinaḥ) - their followers;]
(Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sugrīva, the touch of arrows not they O sinless one, capable to endure in return, how (then) their followers?)
O sinless one, Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and Sugrīva themselves are not able to endure the touch of arrows in return; how then could their followers (be able to endure it)? (03-272-5)
अकृता या प्रहस्तेन कुम्भकर्णेन चानघ। खरस्यापचितिः सङ्ख्ये तां गच्छस्व महाभुज ॥०३-२७२-६॥
akṛtā yā prahastena kumbhakarṇena ca anagha| kharasya apacitiḥ saṅkhye tāṃ gacchasva mahābhuja ॥03-272-6॥
[अकृता (akṛtā) - not performed; not done; या (yā) - which; who; प्रहस्तेन (prahastena) - by Prahasta; कुम्भकर्णेन (kumbhakarṇena) - by Kumbhakarṇa; च (ca) - and; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; खरस्य (kharasya) - of Khara; अपचितिः (apacitiḥ) - honor; esteem; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; तां (tāṃ) - that; गच्छस्व (gacchasva) - go for; attain; महाभुज (mahābhuja) - O mighty-armed one;]
(Which was not performed by Prahasta, by Kumbhakarṇa and, O sinless one, the honor of Khara in battle, that go for, O mighty-armed one.)
O mighty-armed one, pursue that honor in battle for Khara, which was not achieved by Prahasta or by Kumbhakarṇa, O sinless one. (03-272-6)
त्वमद्य निशितैर्बाणैर्हत्वा शत्रून्ससैनिकान्। प्रतिनन्दय मां पुत्र पुरा बद्ध्वेव वासवम् ॥०३-२७२-७॥
tvam adya niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ hatvā śatrūn sa-sainikān। pratinandaya māṃ putra purā baddhvaiva vāsavam॥03-272-7॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - with sharp; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - by arrows; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; ससैनिकान् (sa-sainikān) - along with (their) armies; प्रतिनन्दय (pratinandaya) - welcome back; माम् (mām) - me; पुत्र (putra) - son; पुरा (purā) - formerly; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having bound; इव (iva) - as if; वासवम् (vāsavam) - Indra;]
(You, today, with sharp arrows having slain the enemies along with (their) armies, welcome me back, son, as formerly (I welcomed) Indra having been bound, as if.)
Today, my son, after you slay the enemies and their armies with sharp arrows, welcome me back, just as I once welcomed Indra when he had been bound. (03-272-7)
इत्युक्तः स तथेत्युक्त्वा रथमास्थाय दंशितः। प्रययाविन्द्रजिद्राजंस्तूर्णमायोधनं प्रति ॥०३-२७२-८॥
ity uktaḥ sa tathety uktvā ratham āsthāya daṁśitaḥ। prayayāv indrajid rājaṁs tūrṇam āyodhanaṁ prati॥03-272-8॥
[इति-उक्तः (iti-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; सः (saḥ) - he; तथा-इति-उक्त्वा (tathā-iti-uktvā) - having said 'so'; रथम्-आस्थाय (ratham-āsthāya) - having mounted the chariot; दंशितः (daṁśitaḥ) - armed; प्रययौ (prayayau) - went; इन्द्रजित्-राजन् (indrajit-rājan) - O king Indrajit; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; आयोधनम्-प्रति (āyodhanam-prati) - towards the battlefield;]
(Thus addressed, he, having said 'so', having mounted the chariot, armed, went, O king Indrajit, quickly towards the battlefield.)
Thus addressed and having agreed, Indrajit, O king, mounted his chariot, armed himself, and swiftly proceeded towards the battlefield. (03-272-8)
तत्र विश्राव्य विस्पष्टं नाम राक्षसपुङ्गवः। आह्वयामास समरे लक्ष्मणं शुभलक्षणम् ॥०३-२७२-९॥
tatra viśrāvya vispaṣṭaṃ nāma rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ। āhvayāmāsa samare lakṣmaṇaṃ śubhalakṣaṇam ॥03-272-9॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; विश्राव्य (viśrāvya) - having made (it) heard; विस्पष्टं (vispaṣṭam) - clearly; नाम (nāma) - name; राक्षसपुङ्गवः (rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ) - the foremost Rakshasa; आह्वयामास (āhvayāmāsa) - called (out); समरे (samare) - in battle; लक्ष्मणं (lakṣmaṇam) - Lakshmana; शुभलक्षणम् (śubhalakṣaṇam) - of auspicious marks;]
(There, having made the name clearly heard, the foremost Rakshasa called (out) Lakshmana of auspicious marks in battle.)
There, the foremost Rakshasa, after clearly announcing his name, called out to Lakshmana of auspicious signs in the battle. (03-272-9)
तं लक्ष्मणोऽप्यभ्यधावत्प्रगृह्य सशरं धनुः। त्रासयंस्तलघोषेण सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगं यथा ॥०३-२७२-१०॥
taṁ lakṣmaṇo'pyabhyadhāvat pragṛhya saśaraṁ dhanuḥ। trāsayaṁstalaghoṣeṇa siṁhaḥ kṣudramṛgaṁ yathā ॥03-272-10॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakṣmaṇa; अपि (api) - also; अभ्यधावत् (abhyadhāvat) - rushed towards; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having seized; सशरं (sa-śaram) - with arrow; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; त्रासयन् (trāsayan) - causing to tremble; तलघोषेण (talaghoṣeṇa) - with the resounding noise; सिंहः (siṁhaḥ) - lion; क्षुद्रमृगं (kṣudra-mṛgam) - a small animal; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Him Lakṣmaṇa also rushed towards, having seized bow with arrow, causing to tremble with the resounding noise, as a lion (rushes towards) a small animal.)
Lakṣmaṇa also rushed at him, seizing his bow with an arrow, causing terror with resounding noise, just as a lion (does) to a small animal. (03-272-10)
तयोः समभवद्युद्धं सुमहज्जयगृद्धिनोः। दिव्यास्त्रविदुषोस्तीव्रमन्योन्यस्पर्धिनोस्तदा ॥०३-२७२-११॥
tayoḥ samabhavad yuddhaṃ sumahaj-jayagṛddhinoḥ। divyāstra-viduṣos tīvram anyonya-spardhinos tadā॥03-272-11॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; सम् (sam) - mutual; अभवत् (abhavat) - arose; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; जयगृद्धिनोः (jaya-gṛddhinoḥ) - of the two desiring victory; दिव्यास्त्रविदुषोः (divyāstra-viduṣoḥ) - of the two skilled in divine weapons; तीव्रम् (tīvram) - intense; अन्योन्यस्पर्धिनोः (anyonya-spardhinoḥ) - of the two vying with each other; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Of those two, mutual battle arose, very great, of the two desiring victory, of the two skilled in divine weapons, intense, of the two vying with each other, then.)
At that time, a very great and intense mutual battle arose between those two, each desiring victory and skilled in divine weapons, both vying with each other. (03-272-11)
रावणिस्तु यदा नैनं विशेषयति सायकैः। ततो गुरुतरं यत्नमातिष्ठद्बलिनां वरः ॥०३-२७२-१२॥
rāvaṇis tu yadā nainaṃ viśeṣayati sāyakaiḥ। tato gurutaraṃ yatnam ātiṣṭhad balināṃ varaḥ॥03-272-12॥
[रावणिः (rāvaṇiḥ) - Rāvaṇi; तु (tu) - but; यदा (yadā) - when; न (na) - not; एनम् (enam) - him; विशेषयति (viśeṣayati) - pierces; सायकैः (sāyakaiḥ) - with arrows; ततः (tataḥ) - then; गुरुतरम् (gurutaram) - greater; heavier; यत्नम् (yatnam) - effort; आतिष्ठत् (ātiṣṭhat) - undertook; बलिनाम् (balinām) - of the powerful; वरः (varaḥ) - best;]
(But Rāvaṇi, when he did not pierce him with arrows, then the best of the powerful undertook greater effort.)
But Rāvaṇi, when he could not pierce him with arrows, then the best among the powerful made a greater effort. (03-272-12)
तत एनं महावेगैरर्दयामास तोमरैः। तानागतान्स चिच्छेद सौमित्रिर्निशितैः शरैः ॥ ते निकृत्ताः शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्न्यपतन्वसुधातले ॥०३-२७२-१३॥
tata enaṃ mahāvegair ardayāmāsa tomaraiḥ. tān āgatān sa ciccheda saumitrir niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ॥ te nikṛttāḥ śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ nyapatan vasudhātale ॥03-272-13॥

(Then him with great speed struck with spears. Them, who came, he cut off, Saumitri, with sharp arrows. They, severed by sharp arrows, fell down on the surface of the earth. (03-272-13))
Then, with great speed, he struck him with spears. Those who came, Saumitri cut down with sharp arrows. Severed by the sharp arrows, they fell down upon the earth. (03-272-13)
तमङ्गदो वालिसुतः श्रीमानुद्यम्य पादपम्। अभिद्रुत्य महावेगस्ताडयामास मूर्धनि ॥०३-२७२-१४॥
tam-aṅgado vālisutaḥ śrīmān-udyamya pādapam। abhidrutya mahāvegaḥ tāḍayām āsa mūrdhani ॥03-272-14॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अङ्गदः (aṅgadaḥ) - Aṅgada; वालिसुतः (vālisutaḥ) - son of Vāli; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - glorious one; उद्यम्य (udyamya) - having raised; पादपम् (pādapam) - tree; अभिद्रुत्य (abhidrutya) - having rushed at; महावेगः (mahāvegaḥ) - one of great speed; ताडयाम् आस (tāḍayām āsa) - struck; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on the head;]
(Him Aṅgada, the son of Vāli, the glorious one, having raised a tree, having rushed at (him) with great speed, struck on the head.)
Aṅgada, the illustrious son of Vāli, quickly raised a tree and struck him on the head with great force. (3-272-14)
तस्येन्द्रजिदसम्भ्रान्तः प्रासेनोरसि वीर्यवान्। प्रहर्तुमैच्छत्तं चास्य प्रासं चिच्छेद लक्ष्मणः ॥०३-२७२-१५॥
tasyendrajidasaṁbhrāntaḥ prāsenorasi vīryavān। prahartum aicchat taṁ cāsya prāsaṁ ciccheda lakṣmaṇaḥ ॥03-272-15॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; इन्द्रजित्-असम्भ्रान्तः (indrajit-asaṁbhrāntaḥ) - undaunted like Indrajit; प्रासेन (prāsena) - with a spear; उरसि (urasi) - upon the chest; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; प्रहर्तुम् (prahartum) - to strike; ऐच्छत् (aicchat) - desired; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; प्रासम् (prāsam) - spear; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakṣmaṇa;]
(Of him, undaunted like Indrajit, with a spear upon the chest, powerful, to strike desired him, and his spear Lakṣmaṇa cut.)
Lakṣmaṇa, undaunted like Indrajit and powerful, desired to strike him upon the chest with a spear and cut his spear. (03-272-15)
तमभ्याशगतं वीरमङ्गदं रावणात्मजः। गदयाताडयत्सव्ये पार्श्वे वानरपुङ्गवम् ॥०३-२७२-१६॥
tam abhyāśa-gatam vīram aṅgadam rāvaṇa-ātmajaḥ। gadayā atāḍayat savye pārśve vānarapuṅgavam॥03-272-16॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अभ्याशगतं (abhyāśagatam) - who had come near; वीरम् (vīram) - the hero; अङ्गदम् (aṅgadam) - Aṅgada; रावणात्मजः (rāvaṇātmajaḥ) - the son of Rāvaṇa; गदयाऽताडयत् (gadayā atāḍayat) - struck with a mace; सव्ये (savye) - on the left; पार्श्वे (pārśve) - side; वानरपुङ्गवम् (vānarapuṅgavam) - the foremost of the vānaras;]
(Him, who had come near, the hero Aṅgada, the son of Rāvaṇa struck with a mace on the left side, the foremost of the vānaras.)
The son of Rāvaṇa struck the heroic Aṅgada, the foremost among the vānaras, with a mace on his left side as he approached. (03-272-16)
तमचिन्त्य प्रहारं स बलवान्वालिनः सुतः। ससर्जेन्द्रजितः क्रोधाच्छालस्कन्धममित्रजित् ॥०३-२७२-१७॥
tam acintya prahāraṃ sa balavān vālinah sutaḥ। sa sarjendrajitaḥ krodhāc chālaskandham amitrajit ॥03-272-17॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अचिन्त्य (acintya) - inconceivable; प्रहारम् (prahāram) - blow; सः (saḥ) - he; बलवान् (balavān) - mighty; वालिनः (vālinah) - of Vāli; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; सः (saḥ) - he; ससर्ज (sasṛja) - sent; इन्द्रजितः (indra-jitaḥ) - Indrajit; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - from anger; छालस्कन्धम् (chālaskandham) - the trunk of a Śāla tree; अमित्रजित् (amitra-jit) - conqueror of foes;]
(He, the mighty son of Vāli, sent at him an inconceivable blow. Indrajit, the conqueror of foes, in anger hurled the trunk of a Śāla tree.)
The mighty son of Vāli hurled at him an incredible blow. Indrajit, in anger, threw the trunk of a Śāla tree as the conqueror of his enemies. (03-272-17)
सोऽङ्गदेन रुषोत्सृष्टो वधायेन्द्रजितस्तरुः। जघानेन्द्रजितः पार्थ रथं साश्वं ससारथिम् ॥०३-२७२-१८॥
so'ṅgadena ruṣotsṛṣṭo vadhāyendrajitastaruḥ। jaghānendrajitaḥ pārtha rathaṃ sāśvaṃ sasārathim ॥03-272-18॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अङ्गदेन (aṅgadena) - by Aṅgada; रुषा (ruṣā) - with anger; उत्सृष्टः (utsṛṣṭaḥ) - hurled; वधाय (vadhāya) - for killing; इन्द्रजित् (indrajit) - Indrajit; स्तरुः (staruḥ) - tree; जघान (jaghāna) - struck; इन्द्रजितः (indrajitaḥ) - Indrajit; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā (here, a vocative, addressing Aṅgada as son of Pṛthā, but may also mean with an arrow or simply a dual agent, choosing the first); रथम् (ratham) - chariot; साश्वम् (sāśvam) - with horse; सारथिम् (sārathim) - with charioteer;]
(He, by Aṅgada, with anger hurled for killing Indrajit, a tree; struck Indrajit, O son of Pṛthā, the chariot with horse and charioteer.)
He, enraged, hurled by Aṅgada a tree to kill Indrajit, and Indrajit struck down the chariot, its horses, and the charioteer, O son of Pṛthā. (03-272-18)
ततो हताश्वात्प्रस्कन्द्य रथात्स हतसारथिः। तत्रैवान्तर्दधे राजन्मायया रावणात्मजः ॥०३-२७२-१९॥
tato hatāśvāt praskandya rathāt sa hatasārathiḥ. tatraiva antardadhe rājan māyayā rāvaṇātmajaḥ ॥03-272-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; हताश्वात् (hatāśvāt) - from the chariot whose horses were killed; प्रस्कन्द्य (praskandya) - having leapt down; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; सः (saḥ) - he; हतसारथिः (hatasārathiḥ) - whose charioteer was killed; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; अन्तर्दधे (antardadhe) - disappeared; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मायया (māyayā) - by magic; रावणात्मजः (rāvaṇātmajaḥ) - the son of Rāvaṇa;]
(Then, from the chariot whose horses were killed, having leapt down from the chariot, he whose charioteer was killed, right there disappeared, O king, by magic, the son of Rāvaṇa.)
Then, O king, the son of Rāvaṇa, whose horses and charioteer had been killed, leapt down from the chariot and, right there, disappeared by means of magic. (03-272-19)
अन्तर्हितं विदित्वा तं बहुमायं च राक्षसम्। रामस्तं देशमागम्य तत्सैन्यं पर्यरक्षत ॥०३-२७२-२०॥
antarhitaṃ viditvā taṃ bahumāyaṃ ca rākṣasam। rāmas taṃ deśam āgamya tat sainyaṃ paryarakṣata ॥03-272-20॥
[अन्तर्हितं (antarhitaṃ) - become invisible; concealed; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; तं (taṃ) - that; him; बहुमायं (bahumāyaṃ) - full of much magic; possessing many illusions; च (ca) - and; राक्षसम् (rākṣasam) - the demon; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; तं (taṃ) - that; देशम् (deśam) - region; place; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; तत् (tat) - that; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - army; पयररक्षत् (paryarakṣata) - he protected all around;]
(Having known (that) that demon full of much magic (had) become invisible, Rāma, having come to that region, protected that army all around.)
Realizing that the demon with many illusions had vanished, Rāma went to that place and protected that army on all sides. (03-272-20)
स राममुद्दिश्य शरैस्ततो दत्तवरैस्तदा। विव्याध सर्वगात्रेषु लक्ष्मणं च महारथम् ॥०३-२७२-२१॥
sa rāma-muddiśya śaraiḥ tato datta-varaiḥ tadā। vivyādha sarva-gātreṣu lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahā-ratham॥03-272-21॥
[स (sa) - he; राममुद्दिश्य (rāma-muddiśya) - having aimed at Rāma; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दत्तवरैः (datta-varaiḥ) - endowed with boons; तदा (tadā) - at that time; विव्याध (vivyādha) - pierced; सर्वगात्रेषु (sarva-gātreṣu) - in all limbs; लक्ष्मणं (lakṣmaṇam) - Lakṣmaṇa; च (ca) - and; महारथम् (mahā-ratham) - the great chariot-warrior;]
(He, having aimed at Rāma, then with arrows endowed with boons at that time, pierced in all limbs Lakṣmaṇa, and the great chariot-warrior.)
At that time, he, having aimed at Rāma, then with arrows endowed with boons, pierced Lakṣmaṇa—the great chariot-warrior—in all his limbs. (03-272-21)
तमदृश्यं शरैः शूरौ माययान्तर्हितं तदा। योधयामासतुरुभौ रावणिं रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥०३-२७२-२२॥
tam adṛśyaṃ śaraiḥ śūrau māyayā antarhitaṃ tadā। yodhayām āsatur ubhau rāvaṇiṃ rāma-lakṣmaṇau॥03-272-22॥

Then Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, the two heroes, fought with arrows against the son of Rāvaṇa, who had been made invisible by illusion. (03-272-22)
स रुषा सर्वगात्रेषु तयोः पुरुषसिंहयोः। व्यसृजत्सायकान्भूयः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥०३-२७२-२३॥
sa ruṣā sarvagātreṣu tayoḥ puruṣasiṃhayoḥ। vyasṛjatsāyakānbhūyaḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ॥03-272-23॥
[स (sa) - he; रुषा (ruṣā) - with anger; सर्वगात्रेषु (sarvagātreṣu) - on all the limbs; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; पुरुषसिंहयोः (puruṣasiṃhayoḥ) - of lion-like men; व्यासृजत् (vyasṛjat) - he discharged; सायकान् (sāyakān) - arrows; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अथ (atha) - and then; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(He, with anger, on all the limbs of those two lion-like men, discharged arrows again by hundreds and then by thousands.)
Filled with anger, he released arrows again and again in hundreds and then thousands at all the limbs of those two lion-like men. (03-272-23)
तमदृश्यं विचिन्वन्तः सृजन्तमनिशं शरान्। हरयो विविशुर्व्योम प्रगृह्य महतीः शिलाः ॥०३-२७२-२४॥
tam adṛśyaṃ vicinvantaḥ sṛjantaṃ aniśaṃ śarān| harayaḥ viviśur vyoma pragṛhya mahatīḥ śilāḥ ||03-272-24||
[तम् (tam) - him; अदृश्यं (adṛśyam) - invisible; विचिन्वन्तः (vicinvantaḥ) - searching; सृजन्त (sṛjanta) - releasing; अनिशं (aniśam) - unceasingly; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; हरयः (harayaḥ) - the monkeys; विविशुः (viviśuḥ) - entered; व्योम (vyoma) - the sky; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having seized; महतीः (mahatīḥ) - great; शिलाः (śilāḥ) - rocks;]
(Him invisible searching, releasing unceasingly arrows, the monkeys entered the sky having seized great rocks.)
While searching for him who was invisible and as arrows were being ceaselessly released, the monkeys entered the sky, seizing great rocks. (03-272-24)
तांश्च तौ चाप्यदृश्यः स शरैर्विव्याध राक्षसः। स भृशं ताडयन्वीरो रावणिर्माययावृतः ॥०३-२७२-२५॥
tāṁś ca tau cāpy adṛśyaḥ sa śarair vivyādha rākṣasaḥ। sa bhṛśaṁ tāḍayan vīro rāvaṇir māyayāvṛtaḥ॥03-272-25॥
[तान् (tān) - those (them, accusative plural); च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अदृश्यः (adṛśyaḥ) - invisible; सः (saḥ) - he; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; विव्याध (vivyādha) - pierced; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the demon; सः (saḥ) - he; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; ताडयन् (tāḍayan) - striking; वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; रावणिः (rāvaṇiḥ) - Rāvaṇi; (son/descendant of Rāvaṇa) मायया (māyayā) - by magic; आवृतः (āvṛtaḥ) - enveloped;]
(Those and those two also, the invisible he with arrows pierced, the demon; he exceedingly striking, the hero, Rāvaṇi, by magic enveloped.)
The demon, though invisible, pierced those and those two with arrows; he, the heroic son of Rāvaṇa, enveloped by magic, struck them very fiercely. (3-272-25)
तौ शरैराचितौ वीरौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। पेततुर्गगनाद्भूमिं सूर्याचन्द्रमसाविव ॥०३-२७२-२६॥
tau śarair ācitau vīrau bhrātarau rāma-lakṣmaṇau। petatur gaganād bhūmiṃ sūryācandramasāv iva॥03-272-26॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; आचितौ (ācitau) - completely covered; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; भ्रातरौ (bhrātarau) - brothers; रामलक्ष्मणौ (rāma-lakṣmaṇau) - Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa; पेततुः (petatuḥ) - fell; गगनात् (gaganāt) - from the sky; भूमिम् (bhūmim) - to the ground; सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ (sūryācandramasau) - the sun and the moon; इव (iva) - like;]
(Those two, covered with arrows, heroes, brothers Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, fell from the sky to the ground like the sun and the moon.)
Those two heroic brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, covered with arrows, fell from the sky to the ground like the sun and the moon. (03-272-26)
