Markandeya said.
तावुभौ पतितौ दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरावमितौजसौ। बबन्ध रावणिर्भूयः शरैर्दत्तवरैस्तदा ॥०३-२७३-१॥
tāv ubhau patitau dṛṣṭvā bhrātarau amita-ojasau। babandha rāvaṇiḥ bhūyaḥ śaraiḥ datta-varaiḥ tadā ॥03-273-1॥
[तौ (tāu) - those two; उभौ (ubhau) - both; पतितौ (patitau) - fallen; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भ्रातरौ (bhrātarau) - the brothers; अमितौजसौ (amita-ojasau) - of boundless energy; बबन्ध (babandha) - bound (he); रावणिः (rāvaṇiḥ) - the son of Ravana; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; दत्तवरैः (datta-varaiḥ) - endowed with boons; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Those two, both fallen, having seen, the brothers of boundless energy, bound (he), the son of Ravana, again, with arrows endowed with boons, then.)
Having seen both those brothers of boundless energy fallen, then the son of Ravana again bound them with arrows endowed with boons. (03-273-1)
तौ वीरौ शरजालेन बद्धाविन्द्रजिता रणे। रेजतुः पुरुषव्याघ्रौ शकुन्ताविव पञ्जरे ॥०३-२७३-२॥
tau vīrau śarajālena baddhāv indrajitā raṇe। rejatuḥ puruṣavyāghrau śakuntāv iva pañjare ॥03-273-2॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; शरजालेन (śarajālena) - by a net of arrows; बद्धौ (baddhau) - bound; इन्द्रजिता (indrajitā) - by Indrajit; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; रेजतुः (rejatuḥ) - shone; पुरुषव्याघ्रौ (puruṣavyāghrau) - tiger-men; शकुन्ताविव (śakuntāv iva) - like birds; पञ्जरे (pañjare) - in a cage;]
(Those two heroes, bound by a net of arrows by Indrajit in battle, shone, tiger-men, like birds in a cage.)
Those two heroic men, bound by Indrajit in battle with a net of arrows, shone like tigers among men, just as birds do in a cage. (03-273-2)
तौ दृष्ट्वा पतितौ भूमौ शतशः सायकैश्चितौ। सुग्रीवः कपिभिः सार्धं परिवार्य ततः स्थितः ॥०३-२७३-३॥
tau dṛṣṭvā patitau bhūmau śataśaḥ sāyakaiḥ chittau। sugrīvaḥ kapibhiḥ sārdhaṃ parivārya tataḥ sthitaḥ॥03-273-3॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पतितौ (patitau) - fallen (dual); भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; सायकैः (sāyakaiḥ) - by arrows; चितौ (chittau) - pierced (dual); सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugrīva; कपिभिः (kapibhiḥ) - with monkeys; सार्धं (sārdham) - together; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - stood;]
(Those two, having seen, fallen on the ground, by hundreds (of) arrows pierced, Sugrīva with monkeys together, having surrounded, thereafter stood.)
Seeing those two fallen on the ground, pierced by hundreds of arrows, Sugrīva, surrounded by the monkeys, then stood there. (03-273-3)
सुषेणमैन्दद्विविदैः कुमुदेनाङ्गदेन च। हनूमन्नीलतारैश्च नलेन च कपीश्वरः ॥०३-२७३-४॥
suṣeṇa-mainda-dvividaiḥ kumudena-aṅgadena ca। hanūmat-nīla-tāraiḥ ca nalena ca kapīśvaraḥ ॥03-273-4॥
[सुषेणमैन्दद्विविदैः (suṣeṇa-mainda-dvividaiḥ) - by Suṣeṇa, Mainda, and Dvivida; कुमुदेनाङ्गदेन (kumudena-aṅgadena) - by Kumuda and Aṅgada; च (ca) - and; हनूमन्नीलतारैश्च (hanūmat-nīla-tāraiḥ ca) - by Hanumat, Nīla, and Tārā and; नलेन (nalena) - by Nala; च (ca) - and; कपीश्वरः (kapīśvaraḥ) - the monkey lord;]
(By Suṣeṇa, Mainda, and Dvivida; by Kumuda and Aṅgada and; by Hanumat, Nīla, and Tārā and; by Nala and; the monkey lord.)
The monkey lord (kapīśvaraḥ) was accompanied by Suṣeṇa, Mainda, Dvivida, Kumuda, Aṅgada, Hanumat, Nīla, Tārā, and Nala. (03-273-4)
ततस्तं देशमागम्य कृतकर्मा विभीषणः। बोधयामास तौ वीरौ प्रज्ञास्त्रेण प्रबोधितौ ॥०३-२७३-५॥
tatas taṁ deśam āgamya kṛtakarmā vibhīṣaṇaḥ । bodhayām āsa tau vīrau prajñāstrēṇa prabodhitau ॥03-273-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तं (taṁ) - that; देशम् (deśam) - place; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; कृतकर्मा (kṛtakarmā) - who has accomplished his task; विभीषणः (vibhīṣaṇaḥ) - Vibhīṣaṇa; बोधयामास (bodhayām āsa) - caused to awaken; तौ (tau) - those two; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; प्रज्ञास्त्रेण (prajñāstrēṇa) - by the weapon of knowledge; प्रबोधितौ (prabodhitau) - made awakened;]
(Then, having come to that place, Vibhīṣaṇa, who had accomplished his task, caused those two heroes to awaken, made awakened by the weapon of knowledge.)
Then, after coming to that place and having accomplished his task, Vibhīṣaṇa awakened those two heroes using the weapon of knowledge. (03-273-5)
विशल्यौ चापि सुग्रीवः क्षणेनोभौ चकार तौ। विशल्यया महौषध्या दिव्यमन्त्रप्रयुक्तया ॥०३-२७३-६॥
viśalyau cāpi sugrīvaḥ kṣaṇenobhau cakāra tau। viśalyayā mahauṣadhyā divyamantraprayuktayā ॥03-273-6॥
[विशल्यौ (viśalyau) - free from arrows; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सुग्रीवः (sugrīvaḥ) - Sugriva; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; उभौ (ubhau) - both; चकार (cakāra) - made; तौ (tau) - them; विशल्यया (viśalyayā) - by Viśalyā; महौषध्या (mahauṣadhyā) - by great herb; दिव्यमन्त्रप्रयुक्तया (divyamantraprayuktayā) - employed with divine mantra;]
(Free from arrows and also Sugriva in a moment made both them by Viśalyā great herb employed with divine mantra.)
Sugriva, also, using the great herb Viśalyā empowered with a divine mantra, made both of them free from arrows in a moment. (03-273-6)
तौ लब्धसञ्ज्ञौ नृवरौ विशल्यावुदतिष्ठताम्। गततन्द्रीक्लमौ चास्तां क्षणेनोभौ महारथौ ॥०३-२७३-७॥
tau labdhasaṃjñau nṛvarau viśalyāvudatiṣṭhatām। gatatandrīklamau cāstāṃ kṣaṇenobhau mahārathau ॥03-273-7॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; लब्धसञ्ज्ञौ (labdhasaṃjñau) - regained consciousness; नृवरौ (nṛvarau) - foremost men; विशल्यौ (viśalyau) - free from arrows; उदतिष्ठताम् (udatiṣṭhatām) - stood up; गततन्द्रीक्लमौ (gatatandrīklamau) - with sluggishness and fatigue gone; च (ca) - and; अस्तां (astāṃ) - they became; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; उभौ (ubhau) - both; महारथौ (mahārathau) - great chariot-warriors;]
(Those two, having regained consciousness, foremost men, free from arrows, stood up; with sluggishness and fatigue gone and, in a moment, both became great chariot-warriors.)
The two, having regained consciousness, the foremost of men, freed from arrows, stood up. With their weariness and fatigue ended, in a moment, they both became great chariot-warriors. (03-273-7)
ततो विभीषणः पार्थ राममिक्ष्वाकुनन्दनम्। उवाच विज्वरं दृष्ट्वा कृताञ्जलिरिदं वचः ॥०३-२७३-८॥
tato vibhīṣaṇaḥ pārtha rāmam ikṣvākunandanam। uvāca vijvaraṃ dṛṣṭvā kṛtāñjalir idaṃ vacaḥ॥03-273-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विभीषणः (vibhīṣaṇaḥ) - Vibhīṣaṇa; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; रामम् (rāmam) - to Rāma; इक्ष्वाकुनन्दनम् (ikṣvākunandanam) - descendant of Ikṣvāku; उवाच (uvāca) - said; विज्वरं (vijvaram) - free from distress; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Then Vibhīṣaṇa, O Pārtha, to Rāma, descendant of Ikṣvāku, having seen (him) free from distress, with joined palms, said this speech.)
Then Vibhīṣaṇa, O Pārtha, seeing Rāma, the descendant of Ikṣvāku, free from distress, with joined palms, spoke these words. (03-273-8)
अयमम्भो गृहीत्वा तु राजराजस्य शासनात्। गुह्यकोऽभ्यागतः श्वेतात्त्वत्सकाशमरिंदम ॥०३-२७३-९॥
ayam ambho gṛhītvā tu rājarājasya śāsanāt। guhyako'bhyāgataḥ śvetāt tvatkāśam ariṃdama ॥03-273-9॥
[अयम् (ayam) (ayam) - this; अम्भः (ambhaḥ) (ambhaḥ) - water; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) (gṛhītvā) - having taken; तु (tu) (tu) - but; राजराजस्य (rājarājasya) (rājarājasya) - of the king of kings; शासनात् (śāsanāt) (śāsanāt) - by the order; गुह्यकः (guhyakaḥ) (guhyakaḥ) - the Guhyaka (celestial being); अभ्यागतः (abhyāgataḥ) (abhyāgataḥ) - has approached; श्वेतात् (śvetāt) (śvetāt) - from Śveta (White Mountain); त्वत् (tvat) (tvat) - your; सकाशम् (sakāśam) (sakāśam) - presence; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
(This water having taken but from the command of the king of kings, the Guhyaka has come from Śveta to your presence, O subduer of enemies.)
O subduer of enemies, this Guhyaka, by the command of the king of kings, has come from Śveta (the White Mountain) to your presence, bringing this water. (03-273-9)
इदमम्भः कुबेरस्ते महाराजः प्रयच्छति। अन्तर्हितानां भूतानां दर्शनार्थं परन्तप ॥०३-२७३-१०॥
idam ambhaḥ kuberas te mahārājaḥ prayacchati। antarhitānāṃ bhūtānāṃ darśanārthaṃ parantapa ॥03-273-10॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; अम्भः (ambhaḥ) - water; कुबेरः (kuberaḥ) - Kubera; ते (te) - for you; महाराजः (mahārājaḥ) - great king; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - offers; अन्तर्हितानाम् (antarhitānām) - of invisible; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - beings; दर्शनार्थम् (darśanārtham) - for the purpose of seeing; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(This water Kubera, the great king, offers to you. Of invisible beings for the purpose of seeing, O scorcher of foes.)
Kubera, the great king, offers you this water, O scorcher of foes, for the purpose of seeing the invisible beings. (03-273-10)
अनेन स्पृष्टनयनो भूतान्यन्तर्हितान्युत। भवान्द्रक्ष्यति यस्मै च भवानेतत्प्रदास्यति ॥०३-२७३-११॥
anena spṛṣṭanayano bhūtāny antarhitāny uta। bhavān drakṣyati yasmai ca bhavān etat pradāsyati॥03-273-11॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; स्पृष्टनयनो (spṛṣṭa-nayanaḥ) - whose eyes have been touched; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; अन्तर्हितानि (antarhitāni) - hidden; उत (uta) - and; भवान् (bhavān) - you; द्रक्ष्यति (drakṣyati) - will see; यस्मै (yasmai) - to whom; च (ca) - and; भवान् (bhavān) - you; एतत् (etat) - this; प्रदास्यति (pradāsyati) - will give;]
(By this, whose eyes have been touched, beings hidden (he) and (you) will see; to whom and (you) this will give.)
With this, whoever's eyes are touched will see beings that are hidden; and to whomever you give this, you will see likewise. (03-273-11)
तथेति रामस्तद्वारि प्रतिगृह्याथ सत्कृतम्। चकार नेत्रयोः शौचं लक्ष्मणश्च महामनाः ॥०३-२७३-१२॥
tatheti rāmas tadvāri pratigṛhyātha satkṛtam। cakāra netrayoḥ śaucaṃ lakṣmaṇaś ca mahāmanāḥ ॥03-273-12॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - thus; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; तत्-वारि (tat-vāri) - that water; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having received; अथ (atha) - then; सत्कृतम् (satkṛtam) - respectfully (offered); चकार (cakāra) - did; made; नेत्रयोः (netrayoḥ) - of the eyes; शौचम् (śaucam) - cleansing; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakṣmaṇa; च (ca) - and; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded;]
(Thus, thus Rāma, having respectfully received that water at the door, then did the cleansing of the eyes; and great-minded Lakṣmaṇa (did so as well).)
Rāma, having thus respectfully received the water at the door, then performed the cleansing of his eyes; and noble-minded Lakṣmaṇa did the same. (03-273-12)
सुग्रीवजाम्बवन्तौ च हनूमानङ्गदस्तथा। मैन्दद्विविदनीलाश्च प्रायः प्लवगसत्तमाः ॥०३-२७३-१३॥
sugrīvajāmbavantau ca hanūmānaṅgadastathā. maindadvividanīlāśca prāyaḥ plavagasattamāḥ ॥03-273-13॥
[सुग्रीवजाम्बवन्तौ (sugrīvajāmbavantau) - Sugrīva and Jāmbavān; च (ca) - and; हनूमान् (hanūmān) - Hanumān; अङ्गदः (aṅgadaḥ) - Aṅgada; तथा (tathā) - likewise; मैन्द (mainda) - Mainda; द्विविद (dvivida) - Dvivida; नीलाश् (nīlāḥ) - Nīla (and others); च (ca) - and; प्रायः (prāyaḥ) - generally; प्लवगसत्तमाः (plavagasattamāḥ) - the foremost among monkeys;]
(Sugrīva and Jāmbavān and Hanumān, Aṅgada likewise, Mainda, Dvivida, Nīla and others, generally the foremost among monkeys.)
Sugrīva, Jāmbavān, Hanumān, Aṅgada, Mainda, Dvivida, Nīla, and the rest were generally the most eminent among monkeys. (03-273-13)
तथा समभवच्चापि यदुवाच विभीषणः। क्षणेनातीन्द्रियाण्येषां चक्षूंष्यासन्युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-२७३-१४॥
tathā samabhavaccāpi yaduvāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ। kṣaṇenātīndriyāṇyeṣāṃ cakṣūṃṣyāsanyudhiṣṭhira ॥03-273-14॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; समभवच्च (samabhavacca) - and occurred together; अपि (api) - also; यद् (yad) - that which; उवाच (uvāca) - (he) said; विभीषणः (vibhīṣaṇaḥ) - Vibhīṣaṇa; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in an instant; अतीन्द्रियाणि (atīndriyāṇi) - beyond the senses; एषां (eṣāṃ) - their; चक्षूंषि (cakṣūṃṣi) - eyes; आसन् (āsan) - became; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Thus also there occurred that which Vibhīṣaṇa said. In an instant, their eyes became beyond the senses, O Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Thus, exactly as Vibhīṣaṇa had said, it happened. In a moment, their eyes became capable of perceiving that which is beyond the senses, O Yudhiṣṭhira. (03-273-14)
इन्द्रजित्कृतकर्मा तु पित्रे कर्म तदात्मनः। निवेद्य पुनरागच्छत्त्वरयाजिशिरः प्रति ॥०३-२७३-१५॥
indrajit-kṛta-karmā tu pitre karma tad ātmanaḥ। nivedya punar āgacchat tvarayā jiśiraḥ prati ॥03-273-15॥
[इन्द्रजित् (indrajit) - Indrajit (proper noun); कृतकर्मा (kṛta-karmā) - having performed the act; accomplished in deed; तु (tu) - but; पित्रे (pitre) - to (his) father; कर्म (karma) - act; deed; तत् (tat) - that; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; his own; निवेद्य (nivedya) - having reported; having informed; पुनः (punar) - again; आगच्छत् (āgacchat) - he came back; त्वरया (tvarayā) - with haste; जिशिरः (jiśiraḥ) - to the sacrificial platform; place of sacrifice; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Indrajit, having performed the act, but to his father the act that was his own having reported, again came with haste towards the sacrificial platform.)
Indrajit, having accomplished his task, reported his own deed to his father and then returned swiftly to the place of sacrifice. (03-273-15)
तमापतन्तं सङ्क्रुद्धं पुनरेव युयुत्सया। अभिदुद्राव सौमित्रिर्विभीषणमते स्थितः ॥०३-२७३-१६॥
tam āpatantaṃ saṅkruddhaṃ punar eva yuyutsayā। abhidudrāva saumitrir vibhīṣaṇamate sthitaḥ॥03-273-16॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आपतन्तम् (āpatantam) - approaching; सङ्क्रुद्धम् (saṅkruddham) - very enraged; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; युयुत्सया (yuyutsayā) - with desire to fight; अभिदुद्राव (abhidudrāva) - attacked; सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - Saumitri (son of Sumitra, i.e. Lakshmana); विभीषणमते (vibhīṣaṇa-mate) - according to Vibhīṣaṇa's opinion; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing;]
(Him, approaching, very enraged, again indeed with desire to fight, attacked Saumitri, according to Vibhīṣaṇa's opinion, standing.)
Saumitri, remaining as per Vibhīṣaṇa's counsel, attacked that very enraged one who was coming at him again with intent to fight. (03-273-16)
अकृताह्निकमेवैनं जिघांसुर्जितकाशिनम्। शरैर्जघान सङ्क्रुद्धः कृतसञ्ज्ञोऽथ लक्ष्मणः ॥०३-२७३-१७॥
akṛtāhnikam eva enaṁ jighāṁsur jitakāśinam| śaraiḥ jaghāna saṅkruddhaḥ kṛtasañjño'tha lakṣmaṇaḥ ॥03-273-17॥
[अकृताह्निकम् (akṛtāhnikam) - who has not performed daily rites; एव (eva) - indeed; एनम् (enaṁ) - him; जिघांसुः (jighāṁsuḥ) - desiring to kill; जितकाशिनम् (jitakāśinam) - one who has subdued Kāśi (Kāśina); शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; जघान (jaghāna) - struck; सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddhaḥ) - greatly enraged; कृतसञ्ज्ञः (kṛtasañjñaḥ) - having regained consciousness; अथ (atha) - then; लक्ष्मणः (lakṣmaṇaḥ) - Lakṣmaṇa;]
(Desiring to kill him, who had not performed daily rites, the conqueror of Kāśina, with arrows, struck (him), greatly enraged, having regained consciousness, then Lakṣmaṇa.)
Then Lakṣmaṇa, having regained consciousness and greatly enraged, struck with arrows the conqueror of Kāśina, who had not performed his daily rites, desiring to slay him. (03-273-17)
तयोः समभवद्युद्धं तदान्योन्यं जिगीषतोः। अतीव चित्रमाश्चर्यं शक्रप्रह्लादयोरिव ॥०३-२७३-१८॥
tayoḥ samabhavad yuddhaṃ tad anyonyaṃ jigīṣatoḥ। atīva citram āścaryaṃ śakra-prahlādayor iva॥03-273-18॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of the two; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; युद्धं (yuddham) - battle; तदा (tadā) - then; अन्योन्यं (anyonyam) - one another; जिगीषतोः (jigīṣatoḥ) - desiring victory (dual genitive/ablative); अतीव (atīva) - extremely; चित्रम् (citram) - marvelous; आश्चर्यं (āścaryam) - wonder; शक्रप्रह्लादयोः (śakra-prahlādayoḥ) - of Śakra and Prahlāda (the two); इव (iva) - like;]
(Of the two, arose battle then between one another, desiring victory; extremely marvelous, wonder, like (the battle) of Śakra and Prahlāda.)
Then a battle arose between the two, both desiring to conquer one another; it was extremely marvelous and wondrous, like that between Śakra and Prahlāda. (03-273-18)
अविध्यदिन्द्रजित्तीक्ष्णैः सौमित्रिं मर्मभेदिभिः। सौमित्रिश्चानलस्पर्शैरविध्यद्रावणिं शरैः ॥०३-२७३-१९॥
avidhyad indrajit tīkṣṇaiḥ saumitriṃ marmabhedibhiḥ। saumitriś ca analasparśair avidhyad rāvaṇiṃ śaraiḥ ॥03-273-19॥
[अविध्यत् (avidhyat) - pierced; इन्द्रजित् (indrajit) - Indrajit (son of Indra-conqueror); तीक्ष्णैः (tīkṣṇaiḥ) - sharp; सौमित्रिम् (saumitriṃ) - Saumitri (son of Sumitra, i.e., Lakṣmaṇa); मर्मभेदिभिः (marmabhedibhiḥ) - penetrating vital parts; सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa); च (ca) - and; अनलस्पर्शैः (analasparśaiḥ) - fiery-touching; अविध्यत् (avidhyat) - pierced; रावणिम् (rāvaṇiṃ) - Rāvaṇi (son of Rāvaṇa, i.e., Indrajit); शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows;]
(Indrajit pierced Saumitri with sharp, vital-part-penetrating; Saumitri also with fiery-touching pierced Rāvaṇi with arrows.)
Indrajit pierced Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa) with sharp, vital-penetrating arrows; and Saumitri too pierced Rāvaṇi (Indrajit) with fiery arrows. (03-273-19)
सौमित्रिशरसंस्पर्शाद्रावणिः क्रोधमूर्छितः। असृजल्लक्ष्मणायाष्टौ शरानाशीविषोपमान् ॥०३-२७३-२०॥
saumitri-śara-saṃsparśāt rāvaṇiḥ krodha-mūrchitaḥ। asṛjat lakṣmaṇāya aṣṭau śarān āśī-viṣa-upamān॥03-273-20॥

Struck by Saumitri's arrow, Rāvaṇa, enraged, sent eight venomous arrows like deadly serpents at Lakṣmaṇa. (03-273-20)
तस्यासून्पावकस्पर्शैः सौमित्रिः पत्रिभिस्त्रिभिः। यथा निरहरद्वीरस्तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥०३-२७३-२१॥
tasyāsūn pāvaka-sparśaiḥ saumitriḥ patribhiḥ tribhiḥ। yathā nir-aharad vīraḥ tan me nigadataḥ śṛṇu ॥03-273-21॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; असून् (asūn) - life-breaths; पावकस्पर्शैः (pāvaka-sparśaiḥ) - by the touches of fire; सौमित्रिः (saumitriḥ) - Saumitri (son of Sumitra); पत्रिभिः (patribhiḥ) - with arrows; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - three; यथा (yathā) - as; निरहरत् (nir-aharad) - took away; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; निगदतः (nigadataḥ) - speaking; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen;]

Saumitri, the hero, took away his life with three arrows that burned like fire; listen to me as I explain that.
एकेनास्य धनुष्मन्तं बाहुं देहादपातयत्। द्वितीयेन सनाराचं भुजं भूमौ न्यपातयत् ॥०३-२७३-२२॥
ekenāsya dhanuṣmantaṃ bāhuṃ dehādapātayat। dvitīyena sanārācaṃ bhujaṃ bhūmau nyapātayat॥03-273-22॥
[एकेन (ekena) - by one (arrow); अस्य (asya) - his; of him; धनुष्मन्तं (dhanuṣmantaṃ) - holding a bow; बाहुं (bāhuṃ) - arm; देहात् (dehāt) - from the body; अपातयत् (apātayat) - he caused to fall; द्वितीयेन (dvitīyena) - by a second (arrow); सनाराचं (sanārācaṃ) - with shaft/arrow attached; भुजं (bhujaṃ) - arm; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; न्यपातयत् (nyapātayat) - he caused to fall;]
(By one (arrow), his arm holding the bow he caused to fall from the body. By a second (arrow), the arm with the shaft he caused to fall on the ground.)
With one arrow, he severed his arm holding the bow from the body; with a second arrow, he struck down the arm with the shaft onto the ground. (03-273-22)
तृतीयेन तु बाणेन पृथुधारेण भास्वता। जहार सुनसं चारु शिरो भ्राजिष्णुकुण्डलम् ॥०३-२७३-२३॥
tṛtīyena tu bāṇena pṛthudhāreṇa bhāsvatā। jahāra sunasaṃ cāru śiro bhrājiṣṇukuṇḍalam ॥03-273-23॥
[तृतीयेन (tṛtīyena) - by the third; [instrumental singular of tṛtīya, 'third']; तु (tu) - but; however; बाणेन (bāṇena) - by the arrow; [instrumental singular of bāṇa, 'arrow']; पृथुधारेण (pṛthudhāreṇa) - broad-edged; by (an arrow) with a broad edge; भास्वता (bhāsvatā) - shining; brilliant; जहार (jahāra) - he took off; he removed; सुनसं (sunasaṃ) - having a beautiful nose; चारु (cāru) - beautiful; lovely; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; भ्राजिष्णुकुण्डलम् (bhrājiṣṇukuṇḍalam) - with shining earrings;]
(But by the third, by the arrow with a broad edge, shining, he removed the beautiful-nosed, lovely head with shining earrings.)
But with the third shining, broad-edged arrow, he cut off the beautiful head—lovely, having a shapely nose, and resplendent with shining earrings. (03-273-23)
विनिकृत्तभुजस्कन्धं कबन्धं भीमदर्शनम्। तं हत्वा सूतमप्यस्त्रैर्जघान बलिनां वरः ॥०३-२७३-२४॥
vinikṛttabhujaskandhaṁ kabandhaṁ bhīmadarśanam। taṁ hatvā sūtamapyastrairjaghāna balināṁ varaḥ ॥03-273-24॥
[विनिकृत्तभुजस्कन्धं (vinikṛtta-bhuja-skandham) - with arms and shoulders cut off; कबन्धं (kabandham) - Kabandha (the demon Kabandha); भीमदर्शनम् (bhīma-darśanam) - fearful in appearance; तं (tam) - him; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; सूतम् (sūtam) - the charioteer; अपि (api) - also; अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - with missiles; जघान (jaghāna) - killed; बलिनां (balināṁ) - of the mighty; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(With arms and shoulders cut off, Kabandha, fearful in appearance—him having slain, the charioteer also with missiles killed, of the mighty the best.)
Having slain Kabandha, whose arms and shoulders were severed and who was fearful in appearance, the best among the mighty also killed the charioteer with missiles. (03-273-24)
लङ्कां प्रवेशयामासुर्वाजिनस्तं रथं तदा। ददर्श रावणस्तं च रथं पुत्रविनाकृतम् ॥०३-२७३-२५॥
laṅkāṃ praveśayāmāsur vājinas taṃ rathaṃ tadā। dadarśa rāvaṇas taṃ ca rathaṃ putravinākṛtam॥03-273-25॥
[लङ्कां (laṅkāṃ) (laṅkāṃ) - Lankā (the city); प्रवेशयामासुः (praveśayāmāsuḥ) (praveśayāmāsuḥ) - they made enter; they brought in; वाजिनः (vājinaḥ) (vājinaḥ) - horses; तं (taṃ) (taṃ) - that; रथं (rathaṃ) (rathaṃ) - chariot; तदा (tadā) (tadā) - then; ददर्श (dadarśa) (dadarśa) - he saw; रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; तं (taṃ) (taṃ) - that; च (ca) (ca) - and; रथं (rathaṃ) (rathaṃ) - chariot; पुत्रविनाकृतम् (putravinākṛtam) (putravinākṛtam) - deprived of his son;]
(The horses brought that chariot into Lankā then. Rāvaṇa saw that chariot, and it was deprived of his son.)

(He, having seen his son slain, from fear with bewildered eyes, Rāvaṇa afflicted by grief and delusion, to slay Vaiḍehī, arose (was prepared).)
Having seen his son slain, with eyes bewildered by fear, Rāvaṇa, afflicted by grief and delusion, rose up prepared to slay Vaiḍehī (Sītā). (03-273-26)
अशोकवनिकास्थां तां रामदर्शनलालसाम्। खड्गमादाय दुष्टात्मा जवेनाभिपपात ह ॥०३-२७३-२७॥
aśokavanikāsthāṃ tāṃ rāmadarśanalālasām। khaḍgam ādāya duṣṭātmā javena abhipapāta ha ॥03-273-27॥
[अशोकवनिकास्थाम् (aśokavanikāsthām) - residing in the Ashoka grove; ताम् (tām) - her; रामदर्शनलालसाम् (rāma-darśana-lālasām) - longing to see Rama; खड्गम् (khaḍgam) - sword; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - wicked-souled; जवेना (javena) - swiftly; अभिपपात (abhipapāta) - (he) rushed upon; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Residing in the Ashoka grove, her, longing to see Rama, having taken a sword, the wicked-souled one swiftly rushed upon indeed.)
He, the wicked-souled one, having taken a sword, swiftly rushed upon her who was residing in the Ashoka grove and longing to see Rama. (03-273-27)
तं दृष्ट्वा तस्य दुर्बुद्धेरविन्ध्यः पापनिश्चयम्। शमयामास सङ्क्रुद्धं श्रूयतां येन हेतुना ॥०३-२७३-२८॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā tasya durbuddher avindhyaḥ pāpaniścayam। śamayāmāsa saṅkruddhaṁ śrūyatāṁ yena hetunā ॥03-273-28॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तस्य (tasya) - of him; दुर्बुद्धेः (durbuddheḥ) - of the evil-minded; अविन्ध्यः (avindhyaḥ) - Avindhya; पापनिश्चयम् (pāpaniścayam) - evil resolve; शमयामास (śamayāmāsa) - appeased; सङ्क्रुद्धं (saṅkruddhaṁ) - very angry; श्रूयतां (śrūyatāṁ) - may it be heard; येन (yena) - by which; हेतुना (hetunā) - with cause;]
(Him having seen, of him, of the evil-minded, Avindhya, evil resolve, appeased, very angry; may it be heard by which cause.)

महाराज्ये स्थितो दीप्ते न स्त्रियं हन्तुमर्हसि। हतैवैषा यदा स्त्री च बन्धनस्था च ते गृहे ॥०३-२७३-२९॥
mahārājye sthito dīpte na striyaṃ hantumarhasi। hataivaiṣā yadā strī ca bandhanasthā ca te gṛhe ॥03-273-29॥
[महाराज्ये (mahārājye) - in the great kingdom; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - situated; दीप्ते (dīpte) - shining; न (na) - not; स्त्रियं (striyam) - a woman; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; हता (hatā) - killed; एव (eva) - indeed; एषा (eṣā) - this (woman); यदा (yadā) - since; स्त्री (strī) - a woman; च (ca) - and; बन्धनस्था (bandhanasthā) - confined; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house;]
(In the great kingdom, situated shining, not a woman to kill you ought. Killed indeed this (woman), since a woman and confined and your in the house.)
As one established in a splendid great kingdom, you ought not to kill a woman. Indeed, this woman is as if already dead, being both a woman and held captive in your house. (03-273-29)
न चैषा देहभेदेन हता स्यादिति मे मतिः। जहि भर्तारमेवास्या हते तस्मिन्हता भवेत् ॥०३-२७३-३०॥
na caiṣā dehabhedena hatā syāditi me matiḥ। jahi bhartāram evāsyā hate tasmin hatā bhavet ॥03-273-30॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एषा (eṣā) - she; देहभेदेन (deha-bhedena) - by the separation of the body; हता (hatā) - killed; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion; जहि (jahi) - kill; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - her; हते (hate) - if killed; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - him; हता (hatā) - killed; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be;]
(Not and this, by separation of body, would be killed thus my opinion. Kill husband indeed of her; if him killed, she killed would be.)
It is my opinion that she is not killed merely by separation from the body. Kill her husband only; if he is killed, she would be killed (destroyed) too. (03-273-30)
न हि ते विक्रमे तुल्यः साक्षादपि शतक्रतुः। असकृद्धि त्वया सेन्द्रास्त्रासितास्त्रिदशा युधि ॥०३-२७३-३१॥
na hi te vikrame tulyaḥ sākṣād api śatakratuḥ। asakṛd dhi tvayā sendrāstrāsitās tridaśā yudhi ॥03-273-31॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; विक्रमे (vikrame) - in valor; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; अपि (api) - even; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra (the wielder of a hundred sacrifices); असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सेन्द्राः (sendrāḥ) - with Indra; त्रासिताः (trāsitāḥ) - frightened; त्रिदशाः (tridaśāḥ) - the gods; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(Not indeed in valor your equal directly even Indra; repeatedly indeed by you with Indra frightened the gods in battle.)
For even Indra himself is not at all equal to you in valor; time and again, by you, along with Indra, the gods have been terrified in battle. (03-273-31)
एवं बहुविधैर्वाक्यैरविन्ध्यो रावणं तदा। क्रुद्धं संशमयामास जगृहे च स तद्वचः ॥०३-२७३-३२॥
evaṃ bahuvidhair vākyair avindhyo rāvaṇaṃ tadā। kruddhaṃ saṃśamayām āsa jagṛhe ca sa tadvacaḥ॥03-273-32॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - by many kinds (of); वाक्यैः (vākyaiḥ) - words; अविन्ध्यः (avindhyaḥ) - Avindhya (proper name); रावणं (rāvaṇam) - Rāvaṇa (accusative case); तदा (tadā) - then; क्रुद्धं (kruddham) - angry; संशमयाम् (saṃśamayām) - (he) pacified; आस (āsa) - he (did); जगृहे (jagṛhe) - accepted, took; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; तद्वचः (tadvacaḥ) - those words;]
(Thus by many kinds of words Avindhya (addressed) Rāvaṇa then; the angry one he pacified and he accepted those words.)
Avindhya then pacified the angry Rāvaṇa with many kinds of words, and he accepted those words. (03-273-32)
निर्याणे स मतिं कृत्वा निधायासिं क्षपाचरः। आज्ञापयामास तदा रथो मे कल्प्यतामिति ॥०३-२७३-३३॥
niryāṇe sa matiṃ kṛtvā nidhāyāsiṃ kṣapācaraḥ। ājñāpayāmāsa tadā ratho me kalpyatāmiti॥03-273-33॥
[निर्याणे (niryāṇe) - for the departure; स (sa) - he; मतिं (matiṃ) - thought; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; निधाय (nidhāya) - having set down; आसिं (āsiṃ) - sword; क्षपाचरः (kṣapācaraḥ) - the night-wanderer (a demon or rakṣasa); आज्ञापयामास (ājñāpayāmāsa) - ordered; तदा (tadā) - then; रथः (rathaḥ) - chariot; मे (me) - for me; कल्प्यताम् (kalpyatām) - let it be made ready; इति (iti) - thus;]
(For the departure, he having made up his mind, having set down the sword, the night-wanderer then ordered, "Let a chariot be made ready for me.")
Having resolved upon departure and laying aside his sword, the night-wanderer then gave the order: "Let a chariot be prepared for me." (03-273-33)
