ततः क्रुद्धो दशग्रीवः प्रिये पुत्रे निपातिते। निर्ययौ रथमास्थाय हेमरत्नविभूषितम् ॥०३-२७४-१॥
tataḥ kruddho daśagrīvaḥ priye putre nipātite। niryayau ratham āsthāya hemaratnavibhūṣitam ॥03-274-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angered; दशग्रीवः (daśagrīvaḥ) - Daśagrīva (ten-necked, Rāvaṇa); प्रिये (priye) - beloved; पुत्रे (putre) - son; निपातिते (nipātite) - when fallen; निर्ययौ (niryayau) - departed; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - mounting; हेमरत्नविभूषितम् (hemaratnavibhūṣitam) - adorned with gold and jewels;]
(Then, angered, Daśagrīva, when his beloved son was fallen, departed, mounting the chariot adorned with gold and jewels.)
Then, Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa), enraged upon his beloved son's fall, mounted his chariot adorned with gold and jewels and set out. (03-274-1)
संवृतो राक्षसैर्घोरैर्विविधायुधपाणिभिः। अभिदुद्राव रामं स पोथयन्हरियूथपान् ॥०३-२७४-२॥
saṃvṛto rākṣasair ghorair vividha-āyudha-pāṇibhiḥ. abhidudrāva rāmaṃ sa pothayan hari-yūthapān ॥03-274-2॥
[संवृतः (saṃvṛtaḥ) - surrounded; राक्षसैः (rākṣasaiḥ) - by rākṣasas (demons); घोरैः (ghoraiḥ) - terrible; विविध (vividha) - various; आयुध (āyudha) - weapons; पाणिभिः (pāṇibhiḥ) - with hands; अभिदुद्राव (abhidudrāva) - rushed upon; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma; सः (saḥ) - he; पोथयन् (pothayan) - striking; हरियूथपान् (hari-yūthapān) - monkey-leaders;]
(Being surrounded by terrible rākṣasas with various weapons in their hands, he rushed upon Rāma, striking the monkey-leaders.)
Surrounded by terrible rākṣasas bearing various weapons in their hands, he rushed at Rāma, striking the leaders of the monkeys. (03-274-2)
तमाद्रवन्तं सङ्क्रुद्धं मैन्दनीलनलाङ्गदाः। हनूमाञ्जाम्बवांश्चैव ससैन्याः पर्यवारयन् ॥०३-२७४-३॥
tam ādravantaṃ saṅkruddhaṃ mainda-nīla-nalāṅgadāḥ hanūmān jāmbavāṃś caiva sa-sainyāḥ paryavārayan ॥03-274-3॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आद्रवन्तम् (ādravantam) - rushing; सङ्क्रुद्धम् (saṅkruddham) - enraged; मैन्दनीलनलाङ्गदाः (mainda-nīla-nalāṅgadāḥ) - Mainda, Nila, Nala, Angada; हनूमान् (hanūmān) - Hanuman; जाम्बवाम् (jāmbavām) - Jambavan; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ससैन्याः (sa-sainyāḥ) - with [their] armies; पर्यवारयन् (paryavārayan) - surrounded;]
(Him rushing, enraged, Mainda, Nila, Nala, Angada, Hanuman, Jambavan and indeed, together with their armies, surrounded.)
As he was rushing forward in anger, Mainda, Nila, Nala, Angada, Hanuman, and Jambavan, along with their armies, surrounded him. (03-274-3)
ते दशग्रीवसैन्यं तदृक्षवानरयूथपाः। द्रुमैर्विध्वंसयां चक्रुर्दशग्रीवस्य पश्यतः ॥०३-२७४-४॥
te daśagrīvasainyaṃ tadṛkṣavānarayūthapāḥ. drumair vidhvaṃsayāṃ cakrur daśagrīvasya paśyataḥ ॥03-274-4॥
[ते (te) - they; दशग्रीवसैन्यम् (daśagrīvasainyam) - the army of Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa); तत् (tad) - those; ऋक्षवानरयूथपाः (ṛkṣavānara-yūthapāḥ) - chiefs of bears and monkeys; द्रुमैः (drumaiḥ) - with trees; विध्वंसयाम् (vidhvaṃsayām) - destruction; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; दशग्रीवस्य (daśagrīvasya) - of Daśagrīva; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - as he was watching;]
(They, the chiefs of bears and monkeys, those, the army of Daśagrīva, with trees, destruction made, of Daśagrīva, as he was watching.)
Those chiefs of bears and monkeys attacked and destroyed the army of Daśagrīva with trees, as Daśagrīva watched. (03-274-4)
ततः स्वसैन्यमालोक्य वध्यमानमरातिभिः। मायावी व्यदधान्मायां रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः ॥०३-२७४-५॥
tataḥ svasainyam ālokya vadhyamānam arātibhiḥ. māyāvī vyadadhān māyāṃ rāvaṇaḥ rākṣaseśvaraḥ ॥03-274-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्वसैन्यम् (svasainyam) - his own army; आलोक्य (ālokya) - having seen; वध्यमानम् (vadhyamānam) - being slain; अरातिभिः (arātibhiḥ) - by enemies; मायावी (māyāvī) - possessor of illusion; व्यदधान् (vyadadhān) - wrought (displayed or created); मायाम् (māyām) - illusion; रावणः (rāvaṇaḥ) - Rāvaṇa; राक्षसेश्वरः (rākṣaseśvaraḥ) - lord of the rākṣasas (demons);]
(Then, having seen his own army being slain by enemies, the possessor of illusion, Rāvaṇa, lord of the rākṣasas, wrought illusion.)
Then, seeing his army being slain by the enemies, Rāvaṇa, the master of illusion and lord of the rākṣasas, created a magical illusory display. (03-274-5)
तस्य देहाद्विनिष्क्रान्ताः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। राक्षसाः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त शरशक्त्यृष्टिपाणयः ॥०३-२७४-६॥
tasya dehād viniṣkrāntāḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ। rākṣasāḥ pratyadṛśyanta śaraśaktyṛṣṭipāṇayaḥ॥03-274-6॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; देहात् (dehāt) - from the body; विनिष्क्रान्ताः (viniṣkrāntāḥ) - gone out; departed; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अथ (atha) - and; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; प्रत्यदृश्यन्त (pratyadṛśyanta) - became visible; were seen; शरशक्त्यृष्टिपाणयः (śara-śakti-ṛṣṭi-pāṇayaḥ) - bearing arrows, spears, and lances in hand;]
(From his body departed by hundreds and by thousands rākṣasas, bearing arrows, spears, and lances in hand, and they were seen.)
From his body, rākṣasas by hundreds and thousands, bearing arrows, spears, and lances in their hands, were seen manifesting. (03-274-6)
तान्रामो जघ्निवान्सर्वान्दिव्येनास्त्रेण राक्षसान्। अथ भूयोऽपि मायां स व्यदधाद्राक्षसाधिपः ॥०३-२७४-७॥
tān rāmo jaghnivān sarvān divyena astreṇa rākṣasān। atha bhūyaḥ api māyām saḥ vyadadhāt rākṣasādhipaḥ॥03-274-7॥
[तान् (tān) - them; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; जघ्निवान् (jaghnivān) - killed; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; दिव्येन (divyena) - divine; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - with weapon; राक्षसान् (rākṣasān) - rākṣasas (demons); अथ (atha) - then; भूयः अपि (bhūyaḥ api) - again also; मायाम् (māyām) - illusion; सः (saḥ) - he; व्यदधात् (vyadadhāt) - created; राक्षस-अधिपः (rākṣasa-adhipaḥ) - lord of the rākṣasas;]
(Them Rāma killed, all, with the divine weapon, rākṣasas. Then again also illusion he created, lord of the rākṣasas.)
Rāma killed all those rākṣasas with a divine weapon. Then again, the lord of the rākṣasas created an illusion. (03-274-7)
कृत्वा रामस्य रूपाणि लक्ष्मणस्य च भारत। अभिदुद्राव रामं च लक्ष्मणं च दशाननः ॥०३-२७४-८॥
kṛtvā rāmasya rūpāṇi lakṣmaṇasya ca bhārata। abhidudrāva rāmaṃ ca lakṣmaṇaṃ ca daśānanaḥ ॥03-274-8॥

ततस्ते राममर्छन्तो लक्ष्मणं च क्षपाचराः। अभिपेतुस्तदा राजन्प्रगृहीतोच्चकार्मुकाः ॥०३-२७४-९॥
tatas te rāmaṁ ārchanto lakṣmaṇam ca kṣapā-carāḥ। abhipetus tadā rājan pragṛhīta-uccha-kārmukāḥ॥03-274-9॥

(Then they, approaching Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, the night-wanderers, then rushed, O king, having taken up (with) raised bows.)
Then those night-wanderers, O king, with bows raised, rushed at Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
तां दृष्ट्वा राक्षसेन्द्रस्य मायामिक्ष्वाकुनन्दनः। उवाच रामं सौमित्रिरसम्भ्रान्तो बृहद्वचः ॥०३-२७४-१०॥

जहीमान्राक्षसान्पापानात्मनः प्रतिरूपकान्। जघान रामस्तांश्चान्यानात्मनः प्रतिरूपकान् ॥०३-२७४-११॥
jahīmān rākṣasān pāpān ātmanaḥ pratirūpakān। jaghāna rāmas tāṃś ca anyān ātmanaḥ pratirūpakān॥03-274-11॥
[जहीमान् (jahīmān) - conquering; destroying; राक्षसान् (rākṣasān) - rākṣasas; demons; पापान् (pāpān) - evil; sinful; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; of Rama; प्रतिरूपकान् (pratirūpakān) - having similar appearance; resembling; जघान (jaghāna) - killed; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; तान् (tān) - them; च (ca) - and; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; of Rama; प्रतिरूपकान् (pratirūpakān) - having similar appearance; resembling;]
(Conquering demons evil of oneself resembling, killed Rama them and others of oneself resembling.)
Destroying the evil demons who resembled himself, Rama killed them as well as other demons resembling himself. (03-274-11)
ततो हर्यश्वयुक्तेन रथेनादित्यवर्चसा। उपतस्थे रणे रामं मातलिः शक्रसारथिः ॥०३-२७४-१२॥

Then Mātali, the charioteer of Śakra (Indra), approached Rāma in battle, riding a chariot hitched to green horses and shining with the brilliance of the sun. (03-274-12)

अयं हर्यश्वयुग्जैत्रो मघोनः स्यन्दनोत्तमः। अनेन शक्रः काकुत्स्थ समरे दैत्यदानवान् ॥ शतशः पुरुषव्याघ्र रथोदारेण जघ्निवान् ॥०३-२७४-१३॥
ayaṁ haryaśvayug-jaitro maghonaḥ syandanottamaḥ। anena śakraḥ kākutstha samare daitya-dānavān ॥ śataśaḥ puruṣavyāghra rathodāreṇa jaghnivān ॥03-274-13॥

This excellent, victorious chariot of Maghavan, yoked with tawny horses—O descendant of Kakutstha—Śakra (Indra) slew hundreds of Daityas and Dānavas in battle with this chariot, O tiger among men. (03-274-13)
तदनेन नरव्याघ्र मया यत्तेन संयुगे। स्यन्दनेन जहि क्षिप्रं रावणं मा चिरं कृथाः ॥०३-२७४-१४॥
tadanena naravyāghra mayā yattena saṃyuge। syandanena jahi kṣipraṃ rāvaṇaṃ mā ciraṃ kṛthāḥ॥03-274-14॥

(That, with this, O tiger among men, by me, prepared, in battle; with the chariot, kill quickly Rāvaṇa; do not delay; do.)

इत्युक्तो राघवस्तथ्यं वचोऽशङ्कत मातलेः। मायेयं राक्षसस्येति तमुवाच विभीषणः ॥०३-२७४-१५॥

(Thus addressed, Rāghava suspected the true words of Matali. "This is the illusion of the demon," thus Vibhīṣaṇa said to him.)

नेयं माया नरव्याघ्र रावणस्य दुरात्मनः। तदातिष्ठ रथं शीघ्रमिममैन्द्रं महाद्युते ॥०३-२७४-१६॥
neyaṃ māyā naravyāghra rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ। tadātiṣṭha rathaṃ śīghramimamaindraṃ mahādyute॥03-274-16॥

(Not this illusion, O tiger among men, of Rāvaṇa, the evil-souled; then ascend the chariot quickly, this of Indra, O great splendor.)
This is not the illusion of Rāvaṇa, O tiger among men; therefore, O greatly resplendent one, quickly mount this chariot of Indra. (03-274-16)
ततः प्रहृष्टः काकुत्स्थस्तथेत्युक्त्वा विभीषणम्। रथेनाभिपपाताशु दशग्रीवं रुषान्वितः ॥०३-२७४-१७॥
tataḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ kākutsthas tathety uktvā vibhīṣaṇam। rathenābhipapātāśu daśagrīvaṃ ruṣānvitaḥ॥03-274-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - gladdened; काकुत्स्थः (kākutsthaḥ) - Kākutstha (descendant of Kakutstha, i.e., Rāma); तथेति (tatheti) - ‘so be it’; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; विभीषणम् (vibhīṣaṇam) - to Vibhīṣaṇa; रथेना (rathena) - with the chariot; अभिपपात (abhipapāta) - rushed towards; आशु (āśu) - quickly; दशग्रीवम् (daśagrīvam) - towards Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa, ten-necked one); रुषा (ruṣā) - with anger; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - endowed;]
(Then gladdened Kākutstha, having said 'so be it' to Vibhīṣaṇa, with the chariot rushed quickly towards Daśagrīva, endowed with anger.)
Then Kākutstha, gladdened, having said 'so be it' to Vibhīṣaṇa, swiftly rushed at Daśagrīva in his chariot, filled with anger. (03-274-17)
हाहाकृतानि भूतानि रावणे समभिद्रुते। सिंहनादाः सपटहा दिवि दिव्याश्च नानदन् ॥०३-२७४-१८॥
hāhākṛtāni bhūtāni rāvaṇe samabhidrute। siṃhanādāḥ sa-paṭahā divi divyāś ca nānadan ॥03-274-18॥
[हाहाकृतानि (hāhākṛtāni) - cries of wailing; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; रावणे (rāvaṇe) - when Rāvaṇa; समभिद्रुते (samabhidrute) - was impelled towards (attacked); सिंहनादाः (siṃhanādāḥ) - lion-roars; सपटहा (sa-paṭahā) - with drums; दिवि (divi) - in the sky; दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine (ones); च (ca) - and; नानदन् (nānadan) - roared;]
(Cries of wailing (were made by) the beings, when Rāvaṇa was impelled forward. Lion-roars with drums in the sky, the divine (ones) also roared.)
When Rāvaṇa was advancing, the beings uttered cries of wailing. In the sky, the divine beings also roared like lions along with drums. (03-274-18)
स रामाय महाघोरं विससर्ज निशाचरः। शूलमिन्द्राशनिप्रख्यं ब्रह्मदण्डमिवोद्यतम् ॥०३-२७४-१९॥
sa rāmāya mahāghoraṃ visasarja niśācaraḥ। śūlam indrāśaniprakhyaṃ brahmadaṇḍam ivodyatam ॥03-274-19॥

tac chūlam antarā rāmaś ciccheda niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ। tad dṛṣṭvā duṣkaraṃ karma rāvaṇaṃ bhayam āviśat ॥03-274-20॥

(That spear in between Rāma cut with sharp arrows. That having seen the difficult deed, fear entered Rāvaṇa.)
Rāma cut that spear in mid-air with sharp arrows. When he saw that difficult feat, fear entered Rāvaṇa. (03-274-20)

(Then, angered, the ten-necked one (Rāvaṇa) quickly sent forth sharp arrows, and thousands and tens of thousands of various kinds of weapons at Rāma.)
Then, enraged, the ten-headed Rāvaṇa quickly launched sharp arrows and all sorts of weapons, thousands and tens of thousands in number, at Rāma. (03-274-21)
ततो भुशुण्डीः शूलांश्च मुसलानि परश्वधान्। शक्तीश्च विविधाकाराः शतघ्नीश्च शितक्षुराः ॥०३-२७४-२२॥
tato bhuśuṇḍīḥ śūlāṁś ca musalāni paraśvadhān। śaktīś ca vividhākārāḥ śataghniś ca śitakṣurāḥ ॥03-274-22॥

tataḥ supatraṃ sumukhaṃ hemapuṅkhaṃ śarottamam। tūṇād ādāya kākutsthaḥ brahmāstreṇa yuyoja ha ॥03-274-24॥

(Then the well-feathered, well-pointed, golden-tailed, best arrow, having taken from the quiver, the descendant of Kakutstha (Rāma) with the Brahma-weapon he fixed indeed.)
Then Rāma, descendant of Kakutstha, took the best arrow—well-feathered, well-pointed, and with a golden tail—from his quiver and fixed it with the Brahma-weapon. (03-274-24)
तं बाणवर्यं रामेण ब्रह्मास्त्रेणाभिमन्त्रितम्। जहृषुर्देवगन्धर्वा दृष्ट्वा शक्रपुरोगमाः ॥०३-२७४-२५॥
taṃ bāṇavaryaṃ rāmeṇa brahmāstreṇābhimantritam। jahṛṣur devagandharvā dṛṣṭvā śakrapurogamāḥ ॥03-274-25॥

(That excellent arrow, by Rāma, with the Brahmā-weapon, consecrated— rejoiced the gods and gandharvas, having seen (it), led by Śakra.)
When Rāma consecrated that excellent arrow with the Brahmā-weapon, the gods and gandharvas, led by Indra, rejoiced on seeing it. (03-274-25)
अल्पावशेषमायुश्च ततोऽमन्यन्त रक्षसः। ब्रह्मास्त्रोदीरणाच्छत्रोर्देवगन्धर्वकिंनराः ॥०३-२७४-२६॥
alpāvaśeṣam āyuś ca tato' manyanta rakṣasaḥ। brahmāstroddīraṇāc chatror deva-gandharva-kiṁnarāḥ ॥03-274-26॥
[अल्पावशेषम् (alpāvaśeṣam) - what little remained; आयुः (āyuḥ) - lifespan; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अमন্যन्त (amanyanta) - they considered; रक्षसः (rakṣasaḥ) - of the rāksasa (demon); ब्रह्मास्त्र-उदीरणात् (brahmāstra-udīraṇāt) - from the unleashing of the brahmāstra; छत्रोः (chatroḥ) - of the enemy; देव-गन्धर्व-किंनराः (deva-gandharva-kiṁnarāḥ) - the gods, gandharvas, and kinnara-s;;]
(What little lifespan remained, then the gods, gandharvas, and kinnaras considered (to remain) to the enemy rāksasa, from the unleashing of the brahmāstra.)
Then, after the unleashing of the brahmāstra, the gods, gandharvas, and kinnaras considered that only a little of the enemy rāksasa's lifespan remained. (03-274-26)
ततः ससर्ज तं रामः शरमप्रतिमौजसम्। रावणान्तकरं घोरं ब्रह्मदण्डमिवोद्यतम् ॥०३-२७४-२७॥
tataḥ sasarja taṃ rāmaḥ śaram apratima-ojasam। rāvaṇāntakaraṃ ghoraṃ brahmadaṇḍam ivodyatam॥03-274-27॥

(Then Rāma sent forth that arrow, of unequalled might, destructive to Rāvaṇa, terrible, like the upraised rod of Brahmā.)
Then Rāma released that arrow of unparalleled power, dread and destructive to Rāvaṇa, which was like the upraised staff of Brahmā. (03-274-27)
स तेन राक्षसश्रेष्ठः सरथः साश्वसारथिः। प्रजज्वाल महाज्वालेनाग्निनाभिपरिष्कृतः ॥०३-२७४-२८॥
sa tena rākṣasaśreṣṭhaḥ sarathaḥ sāśvasārathiḥ। prajajvāla mahājvālenāgninābhipariṣkṛtaḥ॥03-274-28॥

(He, by that best among rākṣasas, with chariot, with horses and charioteer, blazed forth, with great flame, by fire completely enveloped.)
He, that best among rākṣasas, together with his chariot, horses, and charioteer, was entirely enveloped by fire and blazed forth with a great flame. (03-274-28)
ततः प्रहृष्टास्त्रिदशाः सगन्धर्वाः सचारणाः। निहतं रावणं दृष्ट्वा रामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ॥०३-२७४-२९॥
tataḥ prahṛṣṭās tridaśāḥ sagandharvāḥ sacāraṇāḥ। nihataṃ rāvaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāmeṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā॥03-274-29॥

(Then rejoiced the gods, with the gandharvas and with the chāraṇas, having seen Rāvaṇa slain by Rāma, by one of effortless action.)
Then the gods, along with the gandharvas and chāraṇas, rejoiced when they saw Rāvaṇa slain by Rāma, who acts without effort. (03-274-29)
तत्यजुस्तं महाभागं पञ्च भूतानि रावणम्। भ्रंशितः सर्वलोकेषु स हि ब्रह्मास्त्रतेजसा ॥०३-२७४-३०॥
tatyajus taṃ mahābhāgaṃ pañca bhūtāni rāvaṇam। bhraṃśitaḥ sarvalokeṣu sa hi brahmāstratejasā ॥03-274-30॥

(The five elements abandoned him, the highly fortunate Rāvaṇa. Fallen in all worlds, he indeed (was) by the power of the Brahmāstra.)
The five elements deserted the highly fortunate Rāvaṇa. Deprived in all worlds, he was indeed overcome by the power of the Brahmāstra. (03-274-30)
शरीरधातवो ह्यस्य मांसं रुधिरमेव च। नेशुर्ब्रह्मास्त्रनिर्दग्धा न च भस्माप्यदृश्यत ॥०३-२७४-३१॥
śarīradhātavo hy asya māṃsaṃ rudhiram eva ca। neśur brahmāstranirdagdhā na ca bhasmāpy adṛśyata॥03-274-31॥
[शरीरधातवः (śarīradhātavaḥ) - body-elements; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of this (person); मांसं (māṃsaṃ) - flesh; रुधिरम् (rudhiram) - blood; एव (eva) - indeed; just; च (ca) - and; नेशुः (neśuḥ) - did not remain; ब्रह्मास्त्रनिर्दग्धाः (brahmāstranirdagdhāḥ) - burned by the Brahma-weapon; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; भस्मापि (bhasmāpi) - even ashes; अदृश्यत (adṛśyata) - was seen;]
(The body-elements indeed of this (person), flesh, and blood indeed and, did not remain, burned by the Brahma-weapon; not and even ashes was seen.)
Indeed, the body elements, flesh, and blood of this person, having been burned by the Brahma-weapon, did not remain; and even ashes were not seen. (03-274-31)
