स हत्वा रावणं क्षुद्रं राक्षसेन्द्रं सुरद्विषम्। बभूव हृष्टः ससुहृद्रामः सौमित्रिणा सह ॥०३-२७५-१॥
sa hatvā rāvaṇaṃ kṣudraṃ rākṣasendraṃ suradviṣam। babhūva hṛṣṭaḥ sa-suhṛd-rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha ॥03-275-1॥
[स (sa) - he; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; रावणं (rāvaṇam) - Rāvaṇa; क्षुद्रं (kṣudram) - base; राक्षसेन्द्रं (rākṣasendram) - king of the rākṣasas; सुरद्विषम् (suradviṣam) - enemy of the gods; बभूव (babhūva) - became; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - glad; ससुहृद्रामः (sa-suhṛd-rāmaḥ) - Rāma with friends; सौमित्रिणा (saumitriṇā) - with the son of Sumitrā (Lakṣmaṇa); सह (saha) - together;]
(He, having slain Rāvaṇa, the base, king of the rākṣasas, enemy of the gods, became glad; Rāma with friends, together with the son of Sumitrā.)
Having slain the base Rāvaṇa, king of the rākṣasas and enemy of the gods, Rāma, together with his friends and Lakṣmaṇa, became glad. (03-275-1)
ततो हते दशग्रीवे देवाः सर्षिपुरोगमाः। आशीर्भिर्जययुक्ताभिरानर्चुस्तं महाभुजम् ॥०३-२७५-२॥

(Then, with the ten-necked one having been slain, the gods, with sages at the forefront, with blessings accompanied by victory, honored him, the mighty-armed one.)
Then, after the ten-necked Rāvaṇa was slain, the gods, led by sages, honored the mighty-armed hero with blessings filled with victory. (03-275-2)
रामं कमलपत्राक्षं तुष्टुवुः सर्वदेवताः। गन्धर्वाः पुष्पवर्षैश्च वाग्भिश्च त्रिदशालयाः ॥०३-२७५-३॥
rāmaṁ kamalapatrākṣaṁ tuṣṭuvuḥ sarvadevatāḥ। gandharvāḥ puṣpavarṣaiś ca vāgbhiś ca tridaśālayāḥ॥03-275-3॥
[रामं (rāmaṁ) - Rama (accusative masculine singular); कमलपत्राक्षं (kamalapatrākṣaṁ) - with eyes like lotus-petals (accusative masculine singular); तुष्टुवुः (tuṣṭuvuḥ) - praised (they); सर्वदेवताः (sarvadevatāḥ) - all the deities; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the Gandharvas; पुष्पवर्षैः (puṣpavarṣaiḥ) - with showers of flowers; च (ca) - and; वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - with words (hymns); च (ca) - and; त्रिदशालयाः (tridaśālayāḥ) - inhabitants of the abode of the thirty (gods);]
(Rama with eyes like lotus-petals praised all the deities—the Gandharvas, with showers of flowers and with words, and the inhabitants of the abode of the Thirty (gods).)
All the deities praised Rama, the lotus-petal-eyed one. The Gandharvas, and the dwellers of the world of gods, showered flowers and uttered words of praise. (03-275-3)
पूजयित्वा यथा रामं प्रतिजग्मुर्यथागतम्। तन्महोत्सवसङ्काशमासीदाकाशमच्युत ॥०३-२७५-४॥
pūjayitvā yathā rāmaṃ pratijagmur yathāgatam। tan-mahotsava-saṅkāśam āsīd ākāśam acyuta ॥03-275-4॥
[पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having worshipped; यथा (yathā) - as; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rama; (accusative singular of Rāma) प्रतिजग्मुः (pratijagmuḥ) - returned; यथागतम् (yathāgatam) - as (they had) come; तन् (tan) - that; महोत्सवसङ्काशम् (mahotsava-saṅkāśam) - like a great festival; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - the sky; अच्युत (acyuta) - O Acyuta; (O infallible one; vocative);]
(Having worshipped Rama as (is fitting), they returned as (they had) come. That sky was like a great festival, O Acyuta.)
After worshipping Rama as is proper, they returned the way they had come. The sky was like a grand festival, O Acyuta. (03-275-4)
ततो हत्वा दशग्रीवं लङ्कां रामो महायशाः। विभीषणाय प्रददौ प्रभुः परपुरञ्जयः ॥०३-२७५-५॥
tato hatvā daśagrīvaṃ laṅkāṃ rāmo mahā-yaśāḥ। vibhīṣaṇāya pradadau prabhuḥ para-puraṃ-jayaḥ॥03-275-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; दशग्रीवम् (daśagrīvam) - ten-necked one; (Rāvaṇa); लङ्काम् (laṅkām) - Laṅkā; (the city); रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; महायशाः (mahā-yaśāḥ) - greatly renowned; of great fame; विभीषणाय (vibhīṣaṇāya) - to Vibhīṣaṇa; प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; master; परपुरञ्जयः (para-puraṃ-jayaḥ) - conqueror of enemy cities;]
(Then, having slain the ten-necked one, Laṅkā, Rāma of great fame to Vibhīṣaṇa gave, the lord, conqueror of enemy cities.)
Then, having slain the ten-necked Rāvaṇa, Rāma, the greatly renowned lord and conqueror of enemy cities, gave Laṅkā to Vibhīṣaṇa. (03-275-5)
ततः सीतां पुरस्कृत्य विभीषणपुरस्कृताम्। अविन्ध्यो नाम सुप्रज्ञो वृद्धामात्यो विनिर्ययौ ॥०३-२७५-६॥

उवाच च महात्मानं काकुत्स्थं दैन्यमास्थितम्। प्रतीच्छ देवीं सद्वृत्तां महात्मञ्जानकीमिति ॥०३-२७५-७॥

[उवाच (uvāca) - said; च (ca) - and; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - the great-souled one; काकुत्स्थं (kākutstham) - Kākutstha (descendant of Kakutstha, i.e., Rāma); दैन्यम् (dainyam) - distress; आस्थितम् (āsthitam) - who had assumed; प्रतीच्छ (pratīccha) - accept; देवीं (devīm) - (the) goddess; सद्वृत्तां (sad-vṛttām) - of good conduct; महात्मन् (mahātman) - O great-souled one; जानकीम् (jānakīm) - Jānakī (Sītā); इति (iti) - so (thus);]
(And said to the great-souled Kākutstha who had assumed distress: "Accept the goddess of good conduct, O great-souled one, Jānakī" thus.)
He said to the great-souled Kākutstha, who was in distress: "O great-souled one, accept the virtuous goddess Jānakī." (03-275-7)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्मादवतीर्य रथोत्तमात्। बाष्पेणापिहितां सीतां ददर्शेक्ष्वाकुनन्दनः ॥०३-२७५-८॥
etac chrutvā vacas tasmād avatīrya rathottamāt। bāṣpeṇāpihitāṃ sītāṃ dadarśa ikṣvāku-nandanaḥ ॥03-275-8॥
[एतच्छ्रुत्वा (etac chrutvā) - having heard this; वचः (vacas) - speech; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that (vehicle); अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having descended; रथोत्तमात् (rathottamāt) - from the excellent chariot; बाष्पेणापिहितां (bāṣpeṇa āpihitām) - covered with tears; सीतां (sītām) - Sita; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; इक्ष्वाकुनन्दनः (ikṣvāku-nandanaḥ) - the descendant of Ikṣvāku;]
(Having heard this speech, having descended from that excellent chariot, the descendant of Ikṣvāku saw Sita covered with tears.)
After hearing these words and descending from the excellent chariot, the descendant of Ikṣvāku saw Sita whose face was covered with tears. (03-275-8)
तां दृष्ट्वा चारुसर्वाङ्गीं यानस्थां शोककर्शिताम्। मलोपचितसर्वाङ्गीं जटिलां कृष्णवाससम् ॥०३-२७५-९॥
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā cārusarvāṅgīṃ yānasthāṃ śokakarśitām। malopacitasarvāṅgīṃ jaṭilāṃ kṛṣṇavāsasam ॥03-275-9॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; चारुसर्वाङ्गीं (cārusarvāṅgīṃ) - of beautiful limbs; यानस्थां (yānasthāṃ) - situated on (in) a vehicle; शोककर्शिताम् (śokakarśitām) - emaciated by grief; मलोपचितसर्वाङ्गीं (malopacitasarvāṅgīṃ) - whose whole body was covered with dirt; जटिलां (jaṭilāṃ) - with matted hair; कृष्णवाससम् (kṛṣṇavāsasam) - clad in black garments;]
(Her, having seen, of beautiful limbs, situated in a vehicle, emaciated by grief, whose entire body was covered with dirt, with matted hair, clad in black garments.)

उवाच रामो वैदेहीं परामर्शविशङ्कितः। गच्छ वैदेहि मुक्ता त्वं यत्कार्यं तन्मया कृतम् ॥०३-२७५-१०॥
uvāca rāmo vaidehīṃ parāmarśaviśaṅkitaḥ। gaccha vaidehi muktā tvaṃ yat kāryaṃ tan mayā kṛtam॥03-275-10॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - said; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; वैदेहीं (vaidehīm) - to Vaidehī; परामर्शविशङ्कितः (parāmarśaviśaṅkitaḥ) - uncertain about consultation; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; वैदेहि (vaidehi) - O Vaidehī; मुक्ता (muktā) - released; त्वम् (tvam) - you; यत् (yat) - what; कार्यं (kāryam) - duty; तत् (tat) - that; मया (mayā) - by me; कृतम् (kṛtam) - has been done;]
(Said Rāma to Vaidehī, uncertain about consultation: "Go, O Vaidehī, released you; what duty that by me has been done." (03-275-10))
Rāma, uncertain about having consulted, said to Vaidehī: "Go, O Vaidehī, you are released; whatever needed to be done has been accomplished by me." (03-275-10)
मामासाद्य पतिं भद्रे न त्वं राक्षसवेश्मनि। जरां व्रजेथा इति मे निहतोऽसौ निशाचरः ॥०३-२७५-११॥
mām āsādya patiṃ bhadre na tvaṃ rākṣasaveśmani. jarāṃ vrajethā iti me nihato'sau niśācaraḥ ॥03-275-11॥
[माम् (mām) - me; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having obtained; पतिम् (patiṃ) - husband; भद्रे (bhadre) - O fortunate (lady); न (na) - not; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; राक्षसवेश्मनि (rākṣasaveśmani) - in the demon's dwelling; जराम् (jarām) - old age; व्रजेथा (vrajethā) - you should reach; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - by me; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; असौ (asau) - he; निशाचरः (niśācaraḥ) - the night-wanderer (demon);]
(Me having obtained as husband, O fortunate, not you in the demon's dwelling should reach old age—thus by me slain is he, the night-wanderer.)
O fortunate lady, since you have obtained me as your husband, you will not grow old in the demon's house—thus, by me, that night-wandering demon has been slain. (03-275-11)
कथं ह्यस्मद्विधो जातु जानन्धर्मविनिश्चयम्। परहस्तगतां नारीं मुहूर्तमपि धारयेत् ॥०३-२७५-१२॥
kathaṁ hy asmad-vidho jātu jānan dharma-viniścayam। para-hasta-gatāṁ nārīṁ muhūrtam api dhārayet॥03-275-12॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्मद्विधः (asmad-vidhaḥ) - like me; जातु (jātu) - ever; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; धर्मविनिश्चयम् (dharma-viniścayam) - the determination of dharma; परहस्तगताम् (para-hasta-gatām) - gone to another's hand; नारीम् (nārīm) - woman; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - even for a moment; अपि (api) - even; धारयेत् (dhārayet) - should maintain;]
(How indeed someone like me, ever knowing the determination of dharma, should maintain a woman gone to another's hand even for a moment.)
How could someone like me, who knows the true rule of dharma, ever sustain or accept even for a moment a woman who has passed into another man's hands? (03-275-12)
सुवृत्तामसुवृत्तां वाप्यहं त्वामद्य मैथिलि। नोत्सहे परिभोगाय श्वावलीढं हविर्यथा ॥०३-२७५-१३॥
suvṛttām asuvṛttāṃ vā api aham tvām adya maithili। na utsahe paribhogāya śvāvalīḍham havir yathā ॥03-275-13॥
[सुवृत्ताम् (suvṛttām) - well-formed (one); असुवृत्ताम् (asuvṛttām) - ill-formed (one); वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; मैथिलि (maithili) - O Maithili (daughter of Mithila); न (na) - not; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am capable (I am inclined); परिभोगाय (paribhogāya) - for enjoyment; श्वा (śvā) - by a dog; अवलीढम् (avalīḍham) - that which is licked (eaten); हविः (havis) - sacrificial offering (oblation); यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Well-formed one or ill-formed one, even, I you today, O Maithili, not am capable for enjoyment, as (one would) a sacrificial oblation licked by a dog.)
O Maithili, whether you are well-formed or ill-formed, even today, I am not inclined to enjoy you—just as one would not partake of a sacrificial offering licked by a dog. (03-275-13)
ततः सा सहसा बाला तच्छ्रुत्वा दारुणं वचः। पपात देवी व्यथिता निकृत्ता कदली यथा ॥०३-२७५-१४॥
tataḥ sā sahasā bālā tacchrutvā dāruṇaṃ vacaḥ। papāta devī vyathitā nikṛttā kadalī yathā ॥03-275-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; बाला (bālā) - girl; तच्छ्रुत्वा (tacchrutvā) - having heard that; दारुणं (dāruṇam) - harsh; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; पपात (papāta) - fell; देवी (devī) - the lady; व्यथिता (vyathitā) - distressed; निकृत्ता (nikṛttā) - cut down; कदली (kadalī) - plantain; यथा (yathā) - like;]
(Then she suddenly, the girl, having heard that harsh speech, the lady fell, distressed, cut down like a plantain.)
Then, the girl suddenly fell down, distressed, upon hearing that harsh speech, just like a plantain tree cut down. (03-275-14)
यो ह्यस्या हर्षसम्भूतो मुखरागस्तदाभवत्। क्षणेन स पुनर्भ्रष्टो निःश्वासादिव दर्पणे ॥०३-२७५-१५॥
yo hy asyā harṣasambhūto mukharāgas tadābhavat। kṣaṇena sa punar bhraṣṭo niḥśvāsādiva darpaṇe ॥03-275-15॥
[यो (yaḥ) - which; (masculine nominative singular); हि (hi) - indeed; for; अस्या (asyāḥ) - her (genitive singular); हर्षसम्भूतः (harṣasambhūtaḥ) - arisen from joy; मुखरागः (mukharāgaḥ) - face-color; (blush; appearance of redness in the face;) तदा (tadā) - then; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; instantly; स (saḥ) - he (here: it); पुनः (punar) - again; भ्रष्टः (bhraṣṭaḥ) - vanished; lost; निःश्वासादिव (niḥśvāsādiva) - like breath; दर्पणे (darpaṇe) - in a mirror;]
(Which indeed from her joy arisen face-color then became; in a moment it again vanished, like breath in a mirror.)
The blush that appeared on her face from joy immediately vanished again in a moment, like a breath in a mirror. (03-275-15)
ततस्ते हरयः सर्वे तच्छ्रुत्वा रामभाषितम्। गतासुकल्पा निश्चेष्टा बभूवुः सहलक्ष्मणाः ॥०३-२७५-१६॥
tatas te harayaḥ sarve tac chrutvā rāma-bhāṣitam। gatāsukalpā niśceṣṭā babhūvuḥ saha-lakṣmaṇāḥ॥03-275-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; हरयः (harayaḥ) - monkeys; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; रामभाषितम् (rāma-bhāṣitam) - Rama's statement; गतासुकल्पा (gatāsukalpā) - as if lifeless; निश्चेष्टा (niśceṣṭā) - motionless; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; सहलक्ष्मणाः (saha-lakṣmaṇāḥ) - with Lakṣmaṇa;]
(Then they, all the monkeys, having heard that statement of Rama, became as if lifeless, motionless, along with Lakshmana.)
Then, all the monkeys, together with Lakshmana, upon hearing Rama's words, became motionless as if lifeless. (03-275-16)
ततो देवो विशुद्धात्मा विमानेन चतुर्मुखः। पितामहो जगत्स्रष्टा दर्शयामास राघवम् ॥०३-२७५-१७॥
tato devo viśuddhātmā vimānena caturmukhaḥ। pitāmaho jagatsraṣṭā darśayāmāsa rāghavam॥03-275-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; विशुद्धात्मा (viśuddhātmā) - of pure essence; विमानेन (vimānena) - by (his) vehicle; चतुर्मुखः (caturmukhaḥ) - four-faced; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire; जगत्स्रष्टा (jagatsraṣṭā) - creator of the world; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; राघवम् (rāghavam) - Rāghava;]
(Then the god, of pure essence, with the vehicle, the four-faced grandsire, the creator of the world, showed Rāghava.)

शक्रश्चाग्निश्च वायुश्च यमो वरुण एव च। यक्षाधिपश्च भगवांस्तथा सप्तर्षयोऽमलाः ॥०३-२७५-१८॥

राजा दशरथश्चैव दिव्यभास्वरमूर्तिमान्। विमानेन महार्हेण हंसयुक्तेन भास्वता ॥०३-२७५-१९॥
rājā daśarathaś caiva divya-bhāsvara-mūrtimān। vimānena mahārheṇa haṃsa-yuktena bhāsvatā ॥03-275-19॥

tato'ntarikṣaṃ tatsarvaṃ deva-gandharva-saṅkulam। śuśubhe tārakā-citraṃ śarad-iva nabhas-talam॥03-275-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अन्तरिक्षम् (antarikṣam) - sky; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - entire; देवगन्धर्वसङ्कुलम् (deva-gandharva-saṅkulam) - crowded with gods and gandharvas; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - was resplendent; तारकाचित्रम् (tārakā-citram) - adorned with stars; शरदि (śaradi) - in autumn; इव (iva) - like; नभस्तलम् (nabhas-talam) - expanse of the sky;]

राजपुत्र न ते कोपं करोमि विदिता हि मे। गतिः स्त्रीणां नराणां च शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥०३-२७५-२२॥
rājaputra na te kopaṃ karomi viditā hi me। gatiḥ strīṇāṃ narāṇāṃ ca śṛṇu cedaṃ vaco mama॥03-275-22॥

अन्तश्चरति भूतानां मातरिश्वा सदागतिः। स मे विमुञ्चतु प्राणान्यदि पापं चराम्यहम् ॥०३-२७५-२३॥

(Within beings moves Mātariśvan always moving; he my vital breaths may release if sin I act I.)
Mātariśvan (the wind), who always moves within beings, may he release my vital breaths if I commit sin. (03-275-23)
अग्निरापस्तथाकाशं पृथिवी वायुरेव च। विमुञ्चन्तु मम प्राणान्यदि पापं चराम्यहम् ॥०३-२७५-२४॥
agnir āpas tathā kāśaṃ pṛthivī vāyur eva ca. vimuñcantu mama prāṇān yadi pāpaṃ carāmy aham ॥03-275-24॥

(Fire, waters, also ether, earth, wind indeed and; may set free my life-breaths, if I commit sin, I.)
If I am committing a sin, may the fire, waters, ether, earth, and wind indeed set my life-breaths free. (03-275-24)
ततोऽन्तरिक्षे वागासीत्सर्वा विश्रावयन्दिशः। पुण्या संहर्षणी तेषां वानराणां महात्मنام् ॥०३-२७५-२५॥
tato'ntarikṣe vāg āsīt sarvā viśrāvayan diśaḥ. puṇyā saṁharṣaṇī teṣāṁ vānarāṇāṁ mahātmanām ॥03-275-25॥

(I abiding within the body of beings, O descendant of Raghu, even a very subtle offense, O descendant of Kakutstha, Maithilī does not commit.)
O Raghunandana, I dwell within the bodies of beings. O Kakutstha, Maithilī does not commit even the slightest offense. (03-275-27)

(Essence indeed born from me indeed in the bodies of beings, O Rāghava. I indeed to you declare Maithilī let her be accepted.)
"The essence, indeed, which is born from me exists in the bodies of beings, O Rāghava. I truly declare to you: let Maithilī (Sītā) be accepted (back by you)." (03-275-28)
ब्रह्मोवाच॥

putra naitadihāścaryaṃ tvayi rājarṣidharmiṇi। sādho sadvṛttamārgasthe śṛṇu cedaṃ vaco mama॥03-275-29॥

(Son, this here is not a wonder in you, royal sage abiding in dharma. O virtuous one, of good conduct, being on the path, hear also this speech of mine.)
Son, this is not a wonder in you, royal sage who abides in dharma. O virtuous one of good conduct on the path, listen to these words of mine. (03-275-29)
शत्रुरेष त्वया वीर देवगन्धर्वभोगिनाम्। यक्षाणां दानवानां च महर्षीणां च पातितः ॥०३-२७५-३०॥
śatrureṣa tvayā vīra devagandharvabhoginām। yakṣāṇāṃ dānavānāṃ ca maharṣīṇāṃ ca pātitaḥ ॥03-275-30॥
[शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - enemy; एष (eṣa) - this; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वीर (vīra) - hero; देवगन्धर्वभोगिनाम् (devagandharvabhoginām) - of those enjoyed by the gods and gandharvas; यक्षाणाम् (yakṣāṇām) - of yakṣas; दानवानाम् (dānavānām) - of dānavas; च (ca) - and; महर्षीणाम् (maharṣīṇām) - of great sages; च (ca) - and; पातितः (pātitaḥ) - has been felled;]
(Enemy this by you, O hero, of those enjoyed by the gods and gandharvas, of yakṣas, of dānavas and of the great sages and has been felled.)
O hero, this enemy, enjoyed by the gods and gandharvas, and belonging to the yakṣas, dānavas, and great sages, has been felled by you. (03-275-30)
अवध्यः सर्वभूतानां मत्प्रसादात्पुराभवत्। कस्माच्चित्कारणात्पापः कञ्चित्कालमुपेक्षितः ॥०३-२७५-३१॥
avadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ matprasādātpurābhavat। kasmāccitkāraṇātpāpaḥ kañcitkālamupekṣitaḥ ॥03-275-31॥
[अवध्यः (avadhyaḥ) - not to be killed; सर्वभूतानां (sarvabhūtānāṃ) - of all beings; मत्प्रसादात् (mat-prasādāt) - by my favor; पुरा (purā) - formerly; अभवत् (abhavat) - he became; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - for some; चित् (cit) - certain; कारणात् (kāraṇāt) - reason; पापः (pāpaḥ) - the sinner; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - for a certain; कालम् (kālam) - time; उपेक्षितः (upekṣitaḥ) - was neglected;]
(Not to be killed of all beings by my favor formerly he became. For some certain reason the sinner for a certain time was neglected.)
He became inviolable to all beings by my favor in former times. For some particular reason, the sinner was neglected for a certain period. (03-275-31)
वधार्थमात्मनस्तेन हृता सीता दुरात्मना। नलकूबरशापेन रक्षा चास्याः कृता मया ॥०३-२७५-३२॥
vadhārtham ātmanas tena hṛtā sītā durātmanā। nalakūbara-śāpena rakṣā cāsyāḥ kṛtā mayā ॥03-275-32॥
[वधार्थम् (vadhārtham) - for the purpose of killing; आत्मनः (ātmanas) - of himself; तेन (tena) - by him; हृता (hṛtā) - abducted; सीता (sītā) - Sita; दुरात्मना (durātmanā) - by the evil-minded one; नलकूबरशापेन (nalakūbara-śāpena) - by the curse of Nalakubara; रक्षा (rakṣā) - protection; चा (cā) - and; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; कृता (kṛtā) - was made; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(For the purpose of killing, by him Sita was abducted by the evil-minded one. By the curse of Nalakubara, protection and of her was made by me.)
For the purpose of his own destruction, Sita was abducted by that evil-minded one. By the curse of Nalakubara, I myself provided her protection. (03-275-32)
यदि ह्यकामामासेवेत्स्त्रियमन्यामपि ध्रुवम्। शतधास्य फलेद्देह इत्युक्तः सोऽभवत्पुरा ॥०३-२७५-३३॥
yadi hy akāmaṃ āseveta striyam anyām api dhruvam। śatadhā asya phalet deha iti uktaḥ saḥ abhavat purā ॥03-275-33॥
[यदि (yadi) (yadi) - if; हि (hi) (hi) - indeed; अकामाम् (akāmām) (akāmām) - one not loving; not desiring; आसेवेत् (āseveta) (āseveta) - would approach; would associate with; स्त्रियम् (striyam) (striyam) - a woman; अन्याम् (anyām) (anyām) - another; अपि (api) (api) - also; even; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) (dhruvam) - certainly; surely; शतधा (śatadhā) (śatadhā) - into a hundred parts; अस्य (asya) (asya) - his; फलेत् (phalet) (phalet) - should split; would burst; देह (deha) (deha) - body; इति (iti) (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) (uktaḥ) - (it was) spoken; सः (saḥ) (saḥ) - he; अभवत् (abhavat) (abhavat) - became; was; पुरा (purā) (purā) - formerly; in ancient times;]
(If indeed, one not loving would associate with another woman also, certainly the body of him should split into a hundred parts, thus (it was) spoken; he became (such) formerly.)
It was once said that if a man, not loving, approaches even another woman, surely his body would break into a hundred pieces; such a fate befell him in ancient times. (03-275-33)
नात्र शङ्का त्वया कार्या प्रतीच्छेमां महाद्युते। कृतं त्वया महत्कार्यं देवानाममरप्रभ ॥०३-२७५-३४॥
nātra śaṅkā tvayā kāryā pratīcchēmāṃ mahādyute । kṛtaṃ tvayā mahatkāryaṃ devānām amaraprabha ॥03-275-34॥
[न atra (na atra) - not here; शङ्का (śaṅkā) - doubt; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्या (kāryā) - should be done; प्रतीच्छ (pratīccha) - accept; इमां (imām) - this; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant one; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; महत्कार्यं (mahatkāryam) - great deed; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; अमरप्रभ (amaraprabha) - O light of the immortals;]
(Not here doubt by you should be done; accept this, O greatly radiant one. Done by you the great deed of the gods, O light of the immortals.)
You should have no doubt here; please accept this, O greatly radiant one. You have accomplished a great deed for the gods, O light of the immortals. (03-275-34)

(I salute you, O king, if you (are) my father. I shall go to the pleasant city Ayodhya by your command.)
I bow to you, O lord of kings. If you are my father, then by your command I shall go to the beautiful city of Ayodhya. (03-275-36)

ततो देवान्नमस्कृत्य सुहृद्भिरभिनन्दितः। महेन्द्र इव पौलोम्या भार्यया स समेयिवान् ॥०३-२७५-३८॥
tato devān namaskṛtya suhṛdbhir abhinanditaḥ। mahendra iva paulomyā bhāryayā sa sameyivān ॥03-275-38॥

ततो वरं ददौ तस्मै अविन्ध्याय परन्तपः। त्रिजटां चार्थमानाभ्यां योजयामास राक्षसीम् ॥०३-२७५-३९॥
tato varaṃ dadau tasmai avindhyāya parantapaḥ। trijaṭāṃ cārthamānābhyāṃ yojayāmāsa rākṣasīm ॥03-275-39॥

(Then the destroyer of enemies gave a boon to him, to Avindhya. He joined the rākṣasī Trijaṭā and the esteemed ones.)

(To him, then, Brahma, surrounded by the gods with Indra at their head, said: "Of Kausalya's son, to you today which boons shall I give?" (03-275-40))
Then Brahma, surrounded by the gods with Indra at their head, said to him: "Which boons of Kausalya's son shall I give to you today?" (03-275-40)
वव्रे रामः स्थितिं धर्मे शत्रुभिश्चापराजयम्। राक्षसैर्निहतानां च वानराणां समुद्भवम् ॥०३-२७५-४१॥
vavre rāmaḥ sthitiṁ dharme śatrubhiś cāparājayam। rākṣasair nihatānāṁ ca vānarāṇāṁ samudbhavam॥03-275-41॥
[वव्रे (vavre) - chose; sought; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; (the proper name); स्थितिं (sthitiṁ) - abiding; presence; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; (righteousness); शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - by the enemies; by foes; च (ca) - and; अपराजयम् (aparājayam) - undefeated state; unconqueredness; राक्षसैः (rākṣasaiḥ) - by the rākṣasas; (demons); निहतानाम् (nihatānām) - of the slain; (those who are killed); च (ca) - and; वानराणाम् (vānarāṇām) - of the vānaras; (monkeys); समुद्भवम् (samudbhavam) - origin; arising;]
(Rāma chose abiding in dharma, the undefeated state by the enemies, and the origin of the slain vānaras by the rākṣasas.)
Rāma chose to remain in righteousness, to be undefeated by his enemies, and for the rebirth of the vānaras who were slain by the rākṣasas. (03-275-41)
ततस्ते ब्रह्मणा प्रोक्ते तथेति वचने तदा। समुत्तस्थुर्महाराज वानरा लब्धचेतसः ॥०३-२७५-४२॥
tatas te brahmaṇā prokte tatheti vacane tadā। samuttasthur mahārāja vānarā labdhacetasah ॥03-275-42॥

(Then they, by Brahma having been spoken, thus so upon the statement, then arose together, O great king, the monkeys, having regained consciousness.)
Then, O great king, when Brahma had spoken, at his words, the monkeys, having regained consciousness, arose together. (03-275-42)
सीता चापि महाभागा वरं हनुमते ददौ। रामकीर्त्या समं पुत्र जीवितं ते भविष्यति ॥०३-२७५-४३॥
sītā cāpi mahābhāgā varaṃ hanumate dadau। rāmakīrtyā samaṃ putra jīvitaṃ te bhaviṣyati॥03-275-43॥
[सीता (sītā) - Sita; चापि (cāpi) - and also; महाभागा (mahābhāgā) - highly fortunate; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; हनुमते (hanumate) - to Hanuman; ददौ (dadau) - gave; रामकीर्त्या (rāmakīrtyā) - by Rama’s fame; समं (samaṃ) - equal; पुत्र (putra) - son; जीवितं (jīvitaṃ) - life; ते (te) - to you; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - shall be;]
(Sita and also, highly fortunate, boon to Hanuman gave. By Rama’s fame, equal, son, life, to you, shall be.)
Sita, the highly fortunate, also gave a boon to Hanuman: 'By Rama’s fame, a son’s life equal to yours shall be.' (03-275-43)
दिव्यास्त्वामुपभोगाश्च मत्प्रसादकृताः सदा। उपस्थास्यन्ति हनुमन्निति स्म हरिलोचन ॥०३-२७५-४४॥
divyās tvām upabhogāś ca mat-prasāda-kṛtāḥ sadā। upasthāsyanti hanuman n iti sma hari-locana ॥03-275-44॥
[दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine; godly; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; उपभोगाः (upabhogāḥ) - enjoyments; pleasures; च (ca) - and; मत् (mat) - my; प्रसादकृताः (prasāda-kṛtāḥ) - produced by grace; सदा (sadā) - always; उपस्थास्यन्ति (upasthāsyanti) - will attend; will be present to; हनुमन् (hanuman) - Hanuman; इति (iti) - thus; स्म (sma) - indeed; हरिलोचन (hari-locana) - Hari-eyed (Vishnu/Viṣṇu, epithet for Rāma);]
(Divine enjoyments and pleasures, produced by my grace, always, will attend you, Hanuman—thus indeed (said) Hari-eyed (Rāma).)
Hari-eyed (Rāma) indeed said: "Divine enjoyments, produced by my grace, will always attend you, Hanuman." (03-275-44)
ततस्ते प्रेक्षमाणानां तेषामक्लिष्टकर्मणाम्। अन्तर्धानं ययुर्देवाः सर्वे शक्रपुरोगमाः ॥०३-२७५-४५॥
tataste prekṣamāṇānāṃ teṣāmakliṣṭakarmaṇām। antardhānaṃ yayurdevāḥ sarve śakrapurogamāḥ ॥03-275-45॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; प्रेक्षमाणानाम् (prekṣamāṇānām) - while observing; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of those; अक्लिष्टकर्मणाम् (akliṣṭakarmaṇām) - of unwearied actions; अन्तर्धानं (antardhānam) - disappearance; ययुः (yayuḥ) - went; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; सर्वे (sarve) - all; शक्रपुरोगमाः (śakrapurogamāḥ) - led by Śakra (Indra);]
(Then they, while observing those of unwearied actions, all the gods led by Śakra (Indra), went to disappearance.)
Then, as they were observing those of unwearied action, all the gods led by Śakra (Indra) disappeared. (03-275-45)
दृष्ट्वा तु रामं जानक्या समेतं शक्रसारथिः। उवाच परमप्रीतः सुहृन्मध्य इदं वचः ॥०३-२७५-४६॥
dṛṣṭvā tu rāmaṃ jānakyā sametaṃ śakrasārathiḥ। uvāca paramaprītaḥ suhṛnmadhya idaṃ vacaḥ ॥03-275-46॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तु (tu) - but; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rāma (accusative singular); जानक्या (jānakyā) - with Jānakī; समेतं (sametaṃ) - accompanied; शक्रसारथिः (śakrasārathiḥ) - the charioteer of Śakra (Indra); उवाच (uvāca) - said; परमप्रीतः (paramaprītaḥ) - greatly delighted; सुहृन्मध्ये (suhṛnmadhye) - in the midst of friends; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Having seen Rāma accompanied by Jānakī, the charioteer of Śakra, greatly delighted, in the midst of friends, said this speech.)
Seeing Rāma together with Jānakī, the charioteer of Indra, greatly delighted, spoke these words among friends. (03-275-46)
देवगन्धर्वयक्षाणां मानुषासुरभोगिनाम्। अपनीतं त्वया दुःखमिदं सत्यपराक्रम ॥०३-२७५-४७॥
devagandharvayakṣāṇāṃ mānuṣāsurabhoginām। apanītaṃ tvayā duḥkham idaṃ satyaparākrama ॥03-275-47॥
[देवगन्धर्वयक्षाणां (devagandharvayakṣāṇām) - of the gods, gandharvas, and yakṣas; मानुषासुरभोगिनाम् (mānuṣāsurabhoginām) - of men, asuras, and experiencers (enjoyers); अपनीतं (apanītam) - removed; taken away; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सत्यपराक्रम (satyaparākrama) - O truly valiant one;]
(Of the gods, gandharvas, and yakṣas, of men, asuras, and experiencers, this suffering has been removed by you, O truly valiant one.)
O truly valiant one, you have removed this suffering from the gods, gandharvas, yakṣas, men, asuras, and all enjoyers. (03-275-47)
सदेवासुरगन्धर्वा यक्षराक्षसपन्नगाः। कथयिष्यन्ति लोकास्त्वां यावद्भूमिर्धरिष्यति ॥०३-२७५-४८॥
sadevāsuragandharvā yakṣarākṣasapannagāḥ। kathayiṣyanti lokāstvāṃ yāvadbhūmirdhariṣyati॥03-275-48॥
[सदेव (sa-deva) - with the gods; असुरगन्धर्वा (asura-gandharvāḥ) - asuras and gandharvas; यक्षराक्षसपन्नगाः (yakṣa-rākṣasa-pannagāḥ) - yakṣas, rākṣasas, and serpents; कथयिष्यन्ति (kathayiṣyanti) - will narrate; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - the worlds; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - the earth; धरिष्यति (dhariṣyati) - will endure;]
(With the gods, asuras, gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and serpents, the worlds will narrate you as long as the earth will endure.)
As long as the earth endures, the worlds—gods, asuras, gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and serpents—will tell of you. (03-275-48)
इत्येवमुक्त्वानुज्ञाप्य रामं शस्त्रभृतां वरम्। सम्पूज्यापाक्रमत्तेन रथेनादित्यवर्चसा ॥०३-२७५-४९॥
ityevam-uktvā anujñāpya rāmaṁ śastrabhṛtāṁ varam। sampūjya apākramat tena rathena ādityavarcasā ॥03-275-49॥
[इति एवम् उक्त्वा (iti evam uktvā) - thus having spoken; अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having permitted; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma; शस्त्रभृतां वरम् (śastrabhṛtāṁ varam) - the best among bearers of weapons; सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having honoured; अपाक्रमत् (apākramat) - departed; तेन रथेन (tena rathena) - with that chariot; आदित्यवर्चसा (ādityavarcasā) - shining with the brilliance of the sun;]
(Thus having spoken, having permitted Rāma, the best among bearers of weapons, and having honoured (him), (he) departed with that chariot shining with the brilliance of the sun.)
Having thus spoken and taken leave of Rāma, the foremost of warriors, and having honoured him, he departed in that chariot shining with the radiance of the sun. (03-275-49)
ततः सीतां पुरस्कृत्य रामः सौमित्रिणा सह। सुग्रीवप्रमुखैश्चैव सहितः सर्ववानरैः ॥०३-२७५-५०॥
tataḥ sītāṃ puraskṛtya rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha। sugrīvapramukhaiścaiva sahitaḥ sarvavānaraiḥ॥03-275-50॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सीतां (sītām) - Sītā (accusative singular); पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - placing in front; having led in front; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama (nominative singular); सौमित्रिणा (saumitriṇā) - with the son of Sumitrā; with Lakṣmaṇa; सह (saha) - together with; सुग्रीवप्रमुखैः (sugrīvapramukhaiḥ) - with Sugrīva and the foremost (plural instrumental); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; together with; सर्ववानरैः (sarvavānaraiḥ) - by all the monkeys;]
(Then having placed Sītā in front, Rama together with Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), and indeed accompanied by Sugrīva and the foremost, together with all the monkeys.)
Then, having Sītā in front, Rama, along with Lakṣmaṇa, accompanied by Sugrīva and the leading chiefs, together with all the monkeys. (03-275-50)
विधाय रक्षां लङ्कायां विभीषणपुरस्कृतः। सन्ततार पुनस्तेन सेतुना मकरालयम् ॥०३-२७५-५१॥
vidhāya rakṣāṁ laṅkāyāṁ vibhīṣaṇapuraskṛtaḥ। santatāra punasten setunā makarālayam ॥03-275-51॥
[विधाय (vidhāya) - having arranged; having performed; रक्षां (rakṣām) - protection; लङ्कायां (laṅkāyām) - in Laṅkā; विभीषणपुरस्कृतः (vibhīṣaṇapuraskṛtaḥ) - preceded by Vibhīṣaṇa; सन्ततार (santatāra) - spanned; crossed; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तेन (tena) - by him; सेतुना (setunā) - by the bridge; मकरालयम् (makarālayam) - the abode of crocodiles; the ocean;]
(Having established protection in Laṅkā, preceded by Vibhīṣaṇa, he again spanned the abode of crocodiles by that bridge.)
After arranging for the protection of Laṅkā, and with Vibhīṣaṇa at the forefront, he once again crossed the ocean (the abode of crocodiles) by means of that bridge. (03-275-51)
पुष्पकेण विमानेन खेचरेण विराजता। कामगेन यथा मुख्यैरमात्यैः संवृतो वशी ॥०३-२७५-५२॥
puṣpakeṇa vimānena khecareṇa virājatā। kāmagena yathā mukhyairamātyaiḥ saṁvṛto vaśī॥03-275-52॥
[पुष्पकेण (puṣpakeṇa) - by Puṣpaka (the name of the aerial chariot); विमानेन (vimānena) - by the aerial vehicle; खेचरेण (khecareṇa) - by the sky-roaming (vehicle); विराजता (virājatā) - resplendent; कामगेण (kāmagena) - moving at will; यथा (yathā) - just as; मुख्यैः (mukhyaiḥ) - by the chief (ones); अमात्यैः (amātyaiḥ) - by ministers; संवृतः (saṁvṛtaḥ) - surrounded; वशी (vaśī) - the master;]
(By the Puṣpaka, by the aerial vehicle, by the sky-roaming, resplendent, moving at will, just as by the chiefs, by ministers, surrounded, the master.)
Master Vaśī, resplendent and riding in the Puṣpaka—the sky-roaming aerial vehicle, moving at will—was surrounded by his chief ministers, just as (one is) attended by the foremost ministers. (03-275-52)
ततस्तीरे समुद्रस्य यत्र शिश्ये स पार्थिवः। तत्रैवोवास धर्मात्मा सहितः सर्ववानरैः ॥०३-२७५-५३॥
tatastīre samudrasya yatra śiśye sa pārthivaḥ। tatraivovāsa dharmātmā sahitaḥ sarva-vānaraiḥ॥03-275-53॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तीरे (tīre) - on the bank; समुद्रस्य (samudrasya) - of the ocean; यत्र (yatra) - where; शिश्ये (śiśye) - laid down; सः (saḥ) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; तत्रैव (tatra eva) - there itself; उवास (uvāsa) - remained; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - the righteous one; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together with; सर्ववानरैः (sarva-vānaraiḥ) - with all the monkeys;]
(Then on the bank of the ocean where that king had lain down, there itself the righteous one remained together with all the monkeys.)
Then, on the ocean's bank where the king had lain, the righteous one stayed there with all the monkeys. (03-275-53)
अथैनान्राघवः काले समानीयाभिपूज्य च। विसर्जयामास तदा रत्नैः सन्तोष्य सर्वशः ॥०३-२७५-५४॥
athainān rāghavaḥ kāle samānīyābhipūjya ca। visarjayāmāsa tadā ratnaiḥ santoṣya sarvaśaḥ ॥03-275-54॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनान् (enān) - these (them); राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - Rāghava (Rama); काले (kāle) - at the proper time; समानीय (samānīya) - having brought together; अभिपूज्य (abhipūjya) - having honored; च (ca) - and; विसर्जयामास (visarjayāmāsa) - he sent away; तदा (tadā) - then; रत्नैः (ratnaiḥ) - with jewels; सन्तोष्य (santoṣya) - having satisfied; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
(Then, having brought them together at the proper time, and having honored (them) as well, Rāghava then sent (them) away, entirely having satisfied (them) with jewels.)
Then Rāghava gathered them at the proper time, honored them, and sent them away, having fully satisfied them with jewels. (03-275-54)
गतेषु वानरेन्द्रेषु गोपुच्छर्क्षेषु तेषु च। सुग्रीवसहितो रामः किष्किन्धां पुनरागमत् ॥०३-२७५-५५॥
gateṣu vānarendreṣu gopuccharkṣeṣu teṣu ca. sugrīvasahito rāmaḥ kiṣkindhāṃ punarāgamat॥03-275-55॥
[गतेषु (gateṣu) - when (they) had gone; वानरेन्द्रेषु (vānarendreṣu) - among the chiefs of the monkeys; गोपुच्छर्क्षेषु (gopuccharkṣeṣu) - among those with cow-like tails, monkeys; तेषु (teṣu) - among those; च (ca) - and; सुग्रीवसहितः (sugrīvasahitaḥ) - together with Sugrīva; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; किष्किन्धां (kiṣkindhāṃ) - to Kiṣkindhā; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आगमत् (āgamat) - came;]
(When the chiefs of the monkeys, those with cow-like tails, had gone, among those, together with Sugrīva, Rāma again came to Kiṣkindhā.)
When the monkey chiefs, those with cow-like tails, had departed, Rāma, together with Sugrīva, returned again to Kiṣkindhā. (03-275-55)
विभीषणेनानुगतः सुग्रीवसहितस्तदा। पुष्पकेण विमानेन वैदेह्या दर्शयन्वनम् ॥०३-२७५-५६॥
vibhīṣaṇenānugataḥ sugrīva-sahitas-tadā। puṣpakeṇa vimānena vaidehyā darśayan vanam ॥03-275-56॥
[विभीषणेन (vibhīṣaṇena) - by Vibhīṣaṇa; अनुगतः (anugataḥ) - followed; सुग्रीवसहितः (sugrīva-sahitaḥ) - accompanied by Sugrīva; तदा (tadā) - then; पुष्पकेण (puṣpakeṇa) - by the Puṣpaka; विमानेन (vimānena) - by the aerial chariot; वैदेह्या (vaidehyā) - to Vaidehī; दर्शयन् (darśayan) - showing; वनम् (vanam) - the forest;]
(Followed by Vibhīṣaṇa, accompanied by Sugrīva, then by the Puṣpaka aerial chariot, to Vaidehī showing the forest.)
Then, accompanied by Sugrīva and followed by Vibhīṣaṇa, he showed the forest to Vaidehī while traveling in the Puṣpaka aerial chariot. (03-275-56)
किष्किन्धां तु समासाद्य रामः प्रहरतां वरः। अङ्गदं कृतकर्माणं यौवराज्येऽभ्यषेचयत् ॥०३-२७५-५७॥
kiṣkindhāṃ tu samāsādya rāmaḥ praharatāṃ varaḥ। aṅgadaṃ kṛtakarmāṇaṃ yauvarājye'bhyaṣecayat ॥03-275-57॥
[किष्किन्धां (kiṣkindhāṃ) - Kiṣkindhā; (name of the monkey capital); तु (tu) - but; however; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - after approaching; having reached; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; (proper noun); प्रहरतां (praharatām) - of those striking; of the warriors; वरः (varaḥ) - best; superior; अङ्गदं (aṅgadaṃ) - Aṅgada; (proper noun; son of Vāli); कृतकर्माणं (kṛtakarmāṇam) - who had accomplished the task; (one who had completed the deed); यौवराज्ये (yauvarājye) - in the position of crown-prince; in the office of heir-apparent; अभ्यषेचयत् (abhyaṣecayat) - anointed; installed; consecrated;]
(Kiṣkindhā but after approaching Rāma, best of warriors, Aṅgada who had accomplished the task, in the position of crown-prince, anointed.)
After reaching Kiṣkindhā, Rāma, the best among warriors, anointed Aṅgada, who had accomplished his task, to the office of crown-prince. (03-275-57)
ततस्तैरेव सहितो रामः सौमित्रिणा सह। यथागतेन मार्गेण प्रययौ स्वपुरं प्रति ॥०३-२७५-५८॥
tatastaireva sahito rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha। yathāgatena mārgeṇa prayayau svapuraṃ prati॥03-275-58॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तैः एव (taiḥ eva) - with those indeed; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; सौमित्रिणा (saumitriṇā) - by Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa); सह (saha) - with; यथागतेन (yathāgatena) - by the path by which (he) came; मार्गेण (mārgeṇa) - by way; प्रययौ (prayayau) - (he) went; स्वपुरं (svapuraṃ) - to his own city; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Then, accompanied by those indeed, Rāma, with Saumitri, by the path by which he came, went towards his own city.)
Then Rāma, accompanied by Saumitri and those others, went along the way by which he had come, towards his own city. (03-275-58)
अयोध्यां स समासाद्य पुरीं राष्ट्रपतिस्ततः। भरताय हनूमन्तं दूतं प्रस्थापयत्तदा ॥०३-२७५-५९॥
ayodhyāṃ sa samāsādya purīṃ rāṣṭrapatistataḥ। bharatāya hanūmantaṃ dūtaṃ prasthāpayattadā ॥03-275-59॥
[अयोध्यां (ayodhyāṃ) - to Ayodhyā; स (sa) - he; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having arrived at; पुरीं (purīṃ) - the city; राष्ट्रपतिः (rāṣṭrapatiḥ) - the lord of the kingdom; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भरताय (bharatāya) - to Bharata; हनूमन्तं (hanūmantaṃ) - Hanumān; दूतं (dūtaṃ) - as messenger; प्रस्थापयत् (prasthāpayat) - he sent; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
(He, having arrived at Ayodhyā, the city, the lord of the kingdom then sent Hanumān as a messenger to Bharata at that time.)
Having reached Ayodhyā, the lord of the kingdom then dispatched Hanumān as a messenger to Bharata. (03-275-59)
लक्षयित्वेङ्गितं सर्वं प्रियं तस्मै निवेद्य च। वायुपुत्रे पुनः प्राप्ते नन्दिग्राममुपागमत् ॥०३-२७५-६०॥
lakṣayitva eṅgitaṃ sarvaṃ priyaṃ tasmai nivedya ca। vāyuputre punaḥ prāpte nandigrāmam upāgamat ॥03-275-60॥
[लक्षयित्व (lakṣayitva) - having observed; इङ्गितं (eṅgitaṃ) - gesture; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear (thing); तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; निवेद्य (nivedya) - having made known; च (ca) - and; वायुपुत्रे (vāyuputre) - when the son of Vāyu; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - when arrived; नन्दिग्रामम् (nandigrāmam) - Nandigrama; उपागमत् (upāgamat) - he approached;]
(Having observed all the gestures, having made known all that was dear to him, and when the son of Vāyu arrived again, he went to Nandigrama.)
After observing all the gestures and making known all that was dear to him, when Hanuman returned, he proceeded to Nandigrama. (03-275-60)
स तत्र मलदिग्धाङ्गं भरतं चीरवाससम्। अग्रतः पादुके कृत्वा ददर्शासीनमासने ॥०३-२७५-६१॥

(He there saw Bharata, having limbs smeared with dirt, clothed in bark garments, placing sandals in front, seated on a seat.)

समेत्य भरतेनाथ शत्रुघ्नेन च वीर्यवान्। राघवः सहसौमित्रिर्मुमुदे भरतर्षभ ॥०३-२७५-६२॥
sametya bharatenātha śatrughnena ca vīryavān। rāghavaḥ saha saumitrirmumude bharatarṣabha ॥03-275-62॥

(Having met with Bharata then with Śatrughna and the mighty Rāghava together with Saumitri rejoiced, O bull among the Bharatas.)

तथा भरतशत्रुघ्नौ समेतौ गुरुणा तदा। वैदेह्या दर्शनेनोभौ प्रहर्षं समवापतुः ॥०३-२७५-६३॥
tathā bharataśatrughnau sametau guruṇā tadā। vaidehyā darśanenobhau praharṣaṃ samavāpatuḥ॥03-275-63॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; भरतशत्रुघ्नौ (bharataśatrughnau) - Bharata and Śatrughna; समेतौ (sametau) - having accompanied; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - with (their) teacher; तदा (tadā) - then; वैदेह्या (vaidehyā) - of Vaidehī (Sītā); दर्शनैन (darśanena) - by the sight; उभौ (ubhau) - both; प्रहर्षं (praharṣaṃ) - great joy; समवापतुः (samavāpatuḥ) - both obtained;]
(Thus Bharata and Śatrughna having accompanied (their) teacher then, by the sight of Vaidehī, both obtained great joy.)
Thus, Bharata and Śatrughna, together with their teacher at that time, both experienced great joy upon seeing Vaidehī (Sītā). (03-275-63)
तस्मै तद्भरतो राज्यमागतायाभिसत्कृतम्। न्यासं निर्यातयामास युक्तः परमया मुदा ॥०३-२७५-६४॥
tasmai tadbharato rājyam āgatāyābhisatkṛtam। nyāsaṃ niryātayāmāsa yuktaḥ paramayā mudā॥03-275-64॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; तत् (tat) - that; भरतः (bharataḥ) - Bharata; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; आगताय (āgatāya) - to (one who has) come; अभिसत्कृतम् (abhisatkṛtam) - honored; न्यासम् (nyāsam) - deposited trust; निर्यातयामास (niryātayāmāsa) - he handed over; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - devoted; परमया (paramayā) - with supreme; मुदा (mudā) - joy;]
(To him, that Bharata the kingdom, (to) the one who had come, honored, the deposited trust he handed over, devoted, with supreme joy.)
To him, Bharata handed back the kingdom, with due honor, handing over the entrusted rule, being devoted and with supreme joy. (03-275-64)
ततस्तं वैष्णवे शूरं नक्षत्रेऽभिमतेऽहनि। वसिष्ठो वामदेवश्च सहितावभ्यषिञ्चताम् ॥०३-२७५-६५॥
tatas taṃ vaiṣṇave śūraṃ nakṣatre'bhimate'hani। vasiṣṭho vāmadevaś ca sahitāv abhyaṣiñcatām ॥03-275-65॥
[तत: (tataḥ) - then; तं (taṃ) - him; वैष्णवे (vaiṣṇave) - Vaiṣṇava (pertaining to Viṣṇu); शूरं (śūram) - hero; नक्षत्रे (nakṣatre) - constellation; अभिमते (abhimate) - approved; अहनि (ahani) - on the day; वसिष्ठ: (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; वामदेवश्च (vāmadevaś ca) - and Vāmadeva; सहितौ (sahitau) - together; अभ्यषिञ्चताम् (abhyaṣiñcatām) - anointed;]
(Then him, in the Vaiṣṇava, heroic constellation, on the approved day, Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva together anointed.)
Then, on the chosen auspicious day under the heroic Vaiṣṇava constellation, Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva together anointed him. (03-275-65)
सोऽभिषिक्तः कपिश्रेष्ठं सुग्रीवं ससुहृज्जनम्। विभीषणं च पौलस्त्यमन्वजानाद्गृहान्प्रति ॥०३-२७५-६६॥
so'bhiṣiktaḥ kapiśreṣṭhaṃ sugrīvaṃ sasuhṛjjanam। vibhīṣaṇaṃ ca paulastyam anvajānādgṛhānprati ॥03-275-66॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अभिषिक्तः (abhiṣiktaḥ) - anointed; कपिश्रेष्ठम् (kapiśreṣṭham) - the foremost of monkeys; सुग्रीवम् (sugrīvam) - Sugrīva; ससुहृज्जनम् (sasuhṛjjanam) - with his friends; विभीषणम् (vibhīṣaṇam) - Vibhīṣaṇa; च (ca) - and; पौलस्त्यम् (paulastyam) - the son of Pulastya; अन्वजानात् (anvajānat) - he sent away after (towards); गृहान् प्रति (gṛhān prati) - towards (their) homes;]
(He, having been anointed, (sent away) the foremost of monkeys, Sugrīva, with his friends, and Vibhīṣaṇa, the son of Pulastya, after (them) towards (their) homes.)

अभ्यर्च्य विविधै रत्नैः प्रीतियुक्तौ मुदा युतौ। समाधायेतिकर्तव्यं दुःखेन विससर्ज ह ॥०३-२७५-६७॥
abhyarcya vividhai ratnaiḥ prītiyuktau mudā yutau. samādhāya itikartavyaṃ duḥkhena visasarja ha ॥03-275-67॥
[अभ्यर्च्य (abhyarcya) - having worshipped; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; रत्नैः (ratnaiḥ) - gems; प्रीतियुक्तौ (prītiyuktau) - endowed with affection; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; युतौ (yutau) - accompanied; समाधाय (samādhāya) - having composed; इतिकर्तव्यं (itikartavyam) - what should be done; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - with grief; विससर्ज (visasarja) - he dismissed; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Having worshipped with various gems, endowed with affection, accompanied with joy, having composed what should be done, with grief, he indeed dismissed.)

पुष्पकं च विमानं तत्पूजयित्वा स राघवः। प्रादाद्वैश्रवणायैव प्रीत्या स रघुनन्दनः ॥०३-२७५-६८॥
puṣpakaṃ ca vimānaṃ tat pūjayitvā sa rāghavaḥ। prādād vaiśravaṇāyaiva prītyā sa raghunandanaḥ॥03-275-68॥

ततो देवर्षिसहितः सरितं गोमतीमनु। दशाश्वमेधानाजह्रे जारूथ्यान्स निरर्गलान् ॥०३-२७५-६९॥
tato devarṣisahitaḥ saritaṃ gomatīmanu। daśāśvamedhān ajahre jārūthyān sa nirargalān ॥03-275-69॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवर्षिसहितः (devarṣisahitaḥ) - together with the divine sage; सरितम् (saritam) - the river; गोमतीम् (gomatīm) - Gomati; अनु (anu) - along; दशाश्वमेधान् (daśāśvamedhān) - ten aśvamedha sacrifices; अजह्रे (ajahre) - he performed; जारूथ्यान् (jārūthyān) - the Jārūthyas; सः (saḥ) - he; निरर्गलान् (nirargalān) - unrestrained;]
(Then, together with the divine sage, he (saḥ) along the river Gomati performed ten aśvamedha sacrifices, the Jārūthyas, unrestrained.)
