Markandeya said.
एवमेतन्महाबाहो रामेणामिततेजसा। प्राप्तं व्यसनमत्युग्रं वनवासकृतं पुरा ॥०३-२७६-१॥
evam etan mahābāho rāmeṇāmitatejasā। prāptaṃ vyasanam atyugraṃ vanavāsakṛtaṃ purā ॥03-276-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; अमिततेजसा (amitatejasā) - of immeasurable splendor; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - obtained; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - calamity; अत्युग्रम् (atyugram) - very severe; वनवासकृतम् (vanavāsakṛtam) - caused by forest dwelling; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Thus this, O mighty-armed, by Rāma of immeasurable splendor, a very severe calamity caused by forest dwelling was obtained formerly.)
O mighty-armed one, thus indeed, by Rāma of immeasurable splendor, this very severe calamity caused by dwelling in the forest was incurred previously. (03-276-1)
मा शुचः पुरुषव्याघ्र क्षत्रियोऽसि परन्तप। बाहुवीर्याश्रये मार्गे वर्तसे दीप्तनिर्णये ॥०३-२७६-२॥
mā śucaḥ puruṣavyāghra kṣatriyo’si parantapa। bāhuvīryāśraye mārge vartase dīptanirṇaye ॥03-276-2॥
[मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a kṣatriya; असि (asi) - you are; परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes; बाहुवीर्याश्रये (bāhuvīryāśraye) - resting upon the strength of (your) arms; मार्गे (mārge) - on the path; वर्तसे (vartase) - you stand; दीप्तनिर्णये (dīptanirṇaye) - in firm decision;]
(Do not grieve, O tiger among men, you are a kṣatriya, O scorcher of foes; you stand on the path resting upon the strength of (your) arms, in firm decision.)
Do not grieve, O tiger among men; you are a kṣatriya, O tormentor of enemies. Relying on the strength of your arms, you stand firmly resolved upon your path. (03-276-2)
न हि ते वृजिनं किञ्चिद्दृश्यते परमण्वपि। अस्मिन्मार्गे विषीदेयुः सेन्द्रा अपि सुरासुराः ॥०३-२७६-३॥
na hi te vṛjinaṃ kiñcid dṛśyate paramaṇv api। asmin mārge viṣīdeyuḥ sendrā api surāsurāḥ॥03-276-3॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - to you; वृजिनं (vṛjinam) - fault; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - even a little; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; परमणु अपि (paramaṇu api) - even as an atom; अस्मिन् मार्गे (asmin mārge) - on this path; विषीदेयुः (viṣīdeyuḥ) - would despair; सेन्द्राः अपि सुरासुराः (sendrāḥ api surāsurāḥ) - even the gods and asuras with Indra;]
(Indeed, not to you is any fault seen, even as an atom. On this path, even gods and asuras with Indra would despair.)
Truly, not even the slightest fault is seen in you; on this path, even the gods and asuras along with Indra would lose heart. (03-276-3)
संहत्य निहतो वृत्रो मरुद्भिर्वज्रपाणिना। नमुचिश्चैव दुर्धर्षो दीर्घजिह्वा च राक्षसी ॥०३-२७६-४॥
saṃhatya nihato vṛtro marudbhirvajrapāṇinā। namuciścaiva durdharṣo dīrghajihvā ca rākṣasī॥03-276-4॥
[संहत्य (saṃhatya) - having joined together; निहतः (nihataḥ) - having been slain; वृत्रः (vṛtraḥ) - Vṛtra (a demon); मरुद्भिः (marudbhiḥ) - by the Maruts; वज्रपाणिना (vajrapāṇinā) - by the one with the thunderbolt in hand (Indra); नमुचिः (namuciḥ) - Namuci (a demon); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दुर्धर्षः (durdharṣaḥ) - Durdharṣa (a mighty being); दीर्घजिह्वा (dīrghajihvā) - Dīrghajihvā (long-tongued demoness); च (ca) - and; राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - Rakṣasī (demoness);]
(Having joined together, Vṛtra was slain by the Maruts and by Vajrapāṇi (Indra); Namuci indeed, Durdharṣa, Dīrghajihvā, and the demoness (Rakṣasī).)
When they joined forces, Vṛtra was slain by the Maruts and by Indra (wielder of the thunderbolt); Namuci, Durdharṣa, Dīrghajihvā, and the demoness were also destroyed. (3-276-4)
सहायवति सर्वार्थाः सन्तिष्ठन्तीह सर्वशः। किं नु तस्याजितं सङ्ख्ये भ्राता यस्य धनञ्जयः ॥०३-२७६-५॥
sahāyavati sarvārthāḥ santiṣṭhantīha sarvaśaḥ. kiṃ nu tasyājitaṃ saṅkhye bhrātā yasya dhanañjayaḥ॥03-276-5॥
[सहायवति (sahāyavati) - with a (good) ally; सर्वार्थाः (sarvārthāḥ) - all purposes; सन्तिष्ठन्ति (santiṣṭhanti) - stand firm; इह (iha) - here; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in all ways; किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - for him; अजितं (ajitaṃ) - undefeated; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; यस्य (yasya) - whose; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Arjuna;]
(With an ally, all purposes stand firm here in all ways. What indeed is unconquered in battle for him whose brother is Arjuna? (03-276-5))
With a good ally, all objectives are well established in every way. What can remain unconquered in battle for one whose brother is Arjuna? (03-276-5)
अयं च बलिनां श्रेष्ठो भीमो भीमपराक्रमः। युवानौ च महेष्वासौ यमौ माद्रवतीसुतौ ॥ एभिः सहायैः कस्मात्त्वं विषीदसि परन्तप ॥०३-२७६-६॥
ayaṃ ca balināṃ śreṣṭho bhīmo bhīma-parākramaḥ। yuvānau ca maheṣvāsau yamau mādravatī-sutau॥ ebhiḥ sahāyaiḥ kasmāttvaṃ viṣīdasi parantapa॥ 03-276-6॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; बलिनां (balināṃ) - of the strong; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; भीमपराक्रमः (bhīma-parākramaḥ) - of terrible prowess; युवानौ (yuvānau) - the two youths; च (ca) - and; महेष्वासौ (maheṣvāsau) - great bowmen; यमौ (yamau) - the twin sons of Yama (i.e. Nakula and Sahadeva); माद्रवतीसुतौ (mādravatī-sutau) - the sons of Mādravatī; एभिः (ebhiḥ) - with these; सहायैः (sahāyaiḥ) - allies; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; विषीदसि (viṣīdasi) - do you despair; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(This, and among the strong the best, Bhima of terrible prowess; the two youths and great bowmen, the twin sons of Mādravatī; with these allies, why do you despair, O scorcher of foes?)
Here is Bhima, the best among the strong, of terrible prowess; and the two young, great bowmen, the twin sons of Mādravatī. With such allies, why do you despair, O scorcher of enemies? (03-276-6)
य इमे वज्रिणः सेनां जयेयुः समरुद्गणाम्। त्वमप्येभिर्महेष्वासैः सहायैर्देवरूपिभिः ॥ विजेष्यसि रणे सर्वानमित्रान्भरतर्षभ ॥०३-२७६-७॥
ya ime vajriṇaḥ senāṃ jayeyuḥ samarud-gaṇām। tvam apy ebhir maheṣvāsaiḥ sahāyair devarūpibhiḥ॥ vijeṣyasi raṇe sarvān amitrān bharatarṣabha॥03-276-7॥
[य (ya) - who; इमे (ime) - these; वज्रिणः (vajriṇaḥ) - bearers of thunderbolt; wielders of strength; सेनां (senāṃ) - army; जयेयुः (jayeyuḥ) - may conquer; समरुद्गणाम् (samarud-gaṇām) - along with the hosts of Maruts; with the groups of Maruts; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; एभिः (ebhiḥ) - with these; महेष्वासैः (maheṣvāsaiḥ) - with great bowmen; सहायैः (sahāyair) - with helpers; देवरूपिभिः (devarūpibhiḥ) - having the appearance of gods; divine in form; विजेष्यसि (vijeṣyasi) - you will conquer; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अमित्रान् (amitrān) - enemies; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
(Who these bearers of thunderbolt army may conquer along with the groups of Maruts; you also with these great bowmen, with helpers divine in form, will conquer in battle all enemies, bull among the Bharatas. (03-276-7))
Just as those bearers of the thunderbolt defeat armies together with the hosts of Maruts, so too, you, aided by these great bowmen and helpers of godlike form, will conquer all your enemies in battle, O bull among the Bharatas. (03-276-7)
इतश्च त्वमिमां पश्य सैन्धवेन दुरात्मना। बलिना वीर्यमत्तेन हृतामेभिर्महात्मभिः ॥०३-२७६-८॥
itaś ca tvam imāṃ paśya saindhavena durātmanā। balinā vīryamattena hṛtām ebhir mahātmabhiḥ॥03-276-8॥
[इतश्च (itaś ca) - from here and; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इमां (imām) - this (object, feminine); पश्य (paśya) - see; सैन्धवेन (saindhavena) - by the Sindhu prince; दुरात्मना (durātmanā) - by the wicked soul; बलिना (balinā) - by the powerful; वीर्यमत्तेन (vīryamattena) - intoxicated by strength; हृताम् (hṛtām) - taken away; एभिः (ebhiḥ) - by these; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by the great-souled ones;]
(From here and you this see, by the Sindhu prince, by the wicked soul, by the powerful, intoxicated by strength, taken away, by these, by the great-souled ones.)
And from here, see this—taken away by that wicked and powerful Sindhu prince, drunk with strength, with the aid of these great-souled ones. (03-276-8)
आनीतां द्रौपदीं कृष्णां कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम्। जयद्रथं च राजानं विजितं वशमागतम् ॥०३-२७६-९॥
ānītāṃ draupadīṃ kṛṣṇāṃ kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram. jayadrathaṃ ca rājānaṃ vijitaṃ vaśamāgatam ॥03-276-9॥
[आनीतां (ānītām) - brought; (feminine accusative singular); द्रौपदीं (draupadīm) - Draupadī; (proper noun, feminine accusative singular); कृष्णां (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā; (an epithet of Draupadī); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; after doing; कर्म (karma) - act; deed; सुदुष्करम् (suduṣkaram) - very difficult; hard to do; जयद्रथं (jayadratham) - Jayadratha; (proper noun, masculine accusative singular); च (ca) - and; राजानं (rājānam) - king; विजितं (vijitam) - conquered; subdued; वशमागतम् (vaśamāgatam) - come under control; subdued;]
(Having brought Draupadī Kṛṣṇā, having done an act very difficult; Jayadratha and the king, conquered, come under control.)
Having brought Draupadī Kṛṣṇā after performing a very difficult deed, and having conquered King Jayadratha, (he was) brought under control. (03-276-9)
असहायेन रामेण वैदेही पुनराहृता। हत्वा सङ्ख्ये दशग्रीवं राक्षसं भीमविक्रमम् ॥०३-२७६-१०॥
asahāyena rāmeṇa vaidehī punar āhṛtā। hatvā saṅkhye daśagrīvaṃ rākṣasaṃ bhīmavikramam ॥03-276-10॥
[असहायेन (asahāyena) - by the helpless; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; वैदेही (vaidehī) - Sītā (daughter of Videha); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आहृता (āhṛtā) - was brought back; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; दशग्रीवम् (daśagrīvam) - Rāvaṇa (the ten-necked one); राक्षसं (rākṣasam) - the demon; भीमविक्रमम् (bhīmavikramam) - of terrible valor;]
(By the helpless Rāma, Sītā was again brought back, having slain in battle Rāvaṇa, the ten-necked demon of terrible valor.)
Sītā was restored by the unaided Rāma after he slew Rāvaṇa, the ten-necked demon of fearsome valor, in battle. (03-276-10)
यस्य शाखामृगा मित्रा ऋक्षाः कालमुखास्तथा। जात्यन्तरगता राजन्नेतद्बुद्ध्यानुचिन्तय ॥०३-२७६-११॥
yasya śākhāmṛgā mitrā ṛkṣāḥ kālamukhās tathā। jātyantaragatā rājann etad buddhyānucintaya ॥03-276-11॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; शाखामृगा (śākhāmṛgā) - monkeys; मित्रा (mitrā) - friends; ऋक्षाः (ṛkṣāḥ) - bears; कालमुखाः (kālamukhāḥ) - hyenas; तथा (tathā) - likewise; जात्यन्तरगता (jātyantaragatā) - belonging to another species; राजन् (rājan) - O king; एतत् (etad) - this; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - with wisdom; अनुचिन्तय (anucintaya) - reflect upon;]
(Of whom the monkeys are friends, bears and hyenas likewise, belonging to other species, O king, this with wisdom reflect upon.)
O king, reflect with wisdom on this: whose friends are monkeys, bears, and hyenas—creatures belonging to other species. (03-276-11)
तस्मात्त्वं कुरुशार्दूल मा शुचो भरतर्षभ। त्वद्विधा हि महात्मानो न शोचन्ति परन्तप ॥०३-२७६-१२॥
tasmāttvaṃ kuruśārdūla mā śuco bharatarṣabha. tvadvidhā hi mahātmāno na śocanti parantapa ॥03-276-12॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कुरुशार्दूल (kuruśārdūla) - O tiger among the Kurus; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucah) - grieve; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; त्वद्विधाः (tvadvidhāḥ) - those like you; हि (hi) - indeed; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; न (na) - not; शोचन्ति (śocanti) - grieve; परन्तप (parantapa) - O chastiser of foes;]
(Therefore you, O tiger among the Kurus, do not grieve, O bull among the Bharatas. Those like you indeed, great-souled ones, do not grieve, O chastiser of foes.)
Therefore, O tiger among the Kurus, do not grieve, O bull among the Bharatas. Truly, great-souled persons like you do not lament, O subduer of enemies. (03-276-12)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥

Vaiśampāyana said;
एवमाश्वासितो राजा मार्कण्डेयेन धीमता। त्यक्त्वा दुःखमदीनात्मा पुनरेवेदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२७६-१३॥
evam āśvāsito rājā mārkaṇḍeyena dhīmatā। tyaktvā duḥkham adīnātmā punar evedam abravīt ॥03-276-13॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आश्वासितः (āśvāsitaḥ) - consoled; राजा (rājā) - king; मार्कण्डेयेन (mārkaṇḍeyena) - by Mārkaṇḍeya; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having given up; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; अदीनात्मा (adīnātmā) - not dispirited (in spirit); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Thus consoled, the king by the wise Mārkaṇḍeya, having given up sorrow, with a spirit not dispirited, again indeed this said.)
Thus consoled by the wise Mārkaṇḍeya, the king, having given up his sorrow and not being dispirited in spirit, again spoke these words. (03-276-13)
