मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥
Markandeya said.
एवमेतन्महाबाहो रामेणामिततेजसा। प्राप्तं व्यसनमत्युग्रं वनवासकृतं पुरा ॥०३-२७६-१॥
O mighty-armed one, thus indeed, by Rāma of immeasurable splendor, this very severe calamity caused by dwelling in the forest was incurred previously. (03-276-1)
मा शुचः पुरुषव्याघ्र क्षत्रियोऽसि परन्तप। बाहुवीर्याश्रये मार्गे वर्तसे दीप्तनिर्णये ॥०३-२७६-२॥
Do not grieve, O tiger among men; you are a kṣatriya, O tormentor of enemies. Relying on the strength of your arms, you stand firmly resolved upon your path. (03-276-2)
न हि ते वृजिनं किञ्चिद्दृश्यते परमण्वपि। अस्मिन्मार्गे विषीदेयुः सेन्द्रा अपि सुरासुराः ॥०३-२७६-३॥
Truly, not even the slightest fault is seen in you; on this path, even the gods and asuras along with Indra would lose heart. (03-276-3)
संहत्य निहतो वृत्रो मरुद्भिर्वज्रपाणिना। नमुचिश्चैव दुर्धर्षो दीर्घजिह्वा च राक्षसी ॥०३-२७६-४॥
When they joined forces, Vṛtra was slain by the Maruts and by Indra (wielder of the thunderbolt); Namuci, Durdharṣa, Dīrghajihvā, and the demoness were also destroyed. (3-276-4)
सहायवति सर्वार्थाः सन्तिष्ठन्तीह सर्वशः। किं नु तस्याजितं सङ्ख्ये भ्राता यस्य धनञ्जयः ॥०३-२७६-५॥
With a good ally, all objectives are well established in every way. What can remain unconquered in battle for one whose brother is Arjuna? (03-276-5)
अयं च बलिनां श्रेष्ठो भीमो भीमपराक्रमः। युवानौ च महेष्वासौ यमौ माद्रवतीसुतौ ॥ एभिः सहायैः कस्मात्त्वं विषीदसि परन्तप ॥०३-२७६-६॥
Here is Bhima, the best among the strong, of terrible prowess; and the two young, great bowmen, the twin sons of Mādravatī. With such allies, why do you despair, O scorcher of enemies? (03-276-6)
य इमे वज्रिणः सेनां जयेयुः समरुद्गणाम्। त्वमप्येभिर्महेष्वासैः सहायैर्देवरूपिभिः ॥ विजेष्यसि रणे सर्वानमित्रान्भरतर्षभ ॥०३-२७६-७॥
Just as those bearers of the thunderbolt defeat armies together with the hosts of Maruts, so too, you, aided by these great bowmen and helpers of godlike form, will conquer all your enemies in battle, O bull among the Bharatas. (03-276-7)
इतश्च त्वमिमां पश्य सैन्धवेन दुरात्मना। बलिना वीर्यमत्तेन हृतामेभिर्महात्मभिः ॥०३-२७६-८॥
And from here, see this—taken away by that wicked and powerful Sindhu prince, drunk with strength, with the aid of these great-souled ones. (03-276-8)
आनीतां द्रौपदीं कृष्णां कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम्। जयद्रथं च राजानं विजितं वशमागतम् ॥०३-२७६-९॥
Having brought Draupadī Kṛṣṇā after performing a very difficult deed, and having conquered King Jayadratha, (he was) brought under control. (03-276-9)
असहायेन रामेण वैदेही पुनराहृता। हत्वा सङ्ख्ये दशग्रीवं राक्षसं भीमविक्रमम् ॥०३-२७६-१०॥
Sītā was restored by the unaided Rāma after he slew Rāvaṇa, the ten-necked demon of fearsome valor, in battle. (03-276-10)
यस्य शाखामृगा मित्रा ऋक्षाः कालमुखास्तथा। जात्यन्तरगता राजन्नेतद्बुद्ध्यानुचिन्तय ॥०३-२७६-११॥
O king, reflect with wisdom on this: whose friends are monkeys, bears, and hyenas—creatures belonging to other species. (03-276-11)
तस्मात्त्वं कुरुशार्दूल मा शुचो भरतर्षभ। त्वद्विधा हि महात्मानो न शोचन्ति परन्तप ॥०३-२७६-१२॥
Therefore, O tiger among the Kurus, do not grieve, O bull among the Bharatas. Truly, great-souled persons like you do not lament, O subduer of enemies. (03-276-12)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said;
एवमाश्वासितो राजा मार्कण्डेयेन धीमता। त्यक्त्वा दुःखमदीनात्मा पुनरेवेदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२७६-१३॥
Thus consoled by the wise Mārkaṇḍeya, the king, having given up his sorrow and not being dispirited in spirit, again spoke these words. (03-276-13)
