मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

ततः काले बहुतिथे व्यतिक्रान्ते कदाचन। प्राप्तः स कालो मर्तव्यं यत्र सत्यवता नृप ॥०३-२८०-१॥
tataḥ kāle bahutithe vyatikrānte kadācana। prāptaḥ sa kālo martavyaṃ yatra satyavatā nṛpa ॥03-280-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; काले (kāle) - when time; बहुतिथे (bahutithe) - many lunar days having passed; व्यतिक्रान्ते (vyatikrānte) - having elapsed; कदाचन (kadācana) - at some time; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - arrived; स (sa) - that; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; मर्तव्यम् (martavyam) - death-to-be; destined to die; यत्र (yatra) - when; सत्यवता (satyavatā) - by Satyavatā; नृप (nṛpa) - king;]
(Thereafter, when in time many lunar days had elapsed, at some time that time arrived when death was destined by Satyavatā, O king.)
Afterwards, when many lunar days had passed in the course of time, the moment came when Satyavatā was fated to die, O king. (03-280-1)
गणयन्त्याश्च सावित्र्या दिवसे दिवसे गते। तद्वाक्यं नारदेनोक्तं वर्तते हृदि नित्यशः ॥०३-२८०-२॥
gaṇayantyāś ca sāvitryā divase divase gate। tad-vākyaṃ nāradena uktaṃ vartate hṛdi nityaśaḥ॥03-280-2॥
[गणयन्त्याः (gaṇayantyāḥ) - of (her who is) counting; च (ca) - and; सावित्र्या (sāvitryā) - of Sāvitrī; दिवसे (divase) - on (each) day; दिवसे (divase) - on (each) day; गते (gate) - having passed; तद् (tad) - that; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; वर्तते (vartate) - remains; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - constantly;]
(Of (the one who is) counting and of Sāvitrī, as each day passes, that speech spoken by Nārada remains in (her) heart constantly.)
And as Sāvitrī counts the passing of each day, that speech spoken by Nārada constantly remains in her heart. (03-280-2)
चतुर्थेऽहनि मर्तव्यमिति सञ्चिन्त्य भामिनी। व्रतं त्रिरात्रमुद्दिश्य दिवारात्रं स्थिताभवत् ॥०३-२८०-३॥
caturthe'ahani martavyam iti sañcintya bhāminī। vrataṃ trirātram uddiśya divārātraṃ sthitā'bhavat ॥03-280-3॥
[चतुर्थेऽहनि (caturthe'ahani) - on the fourth day; मर्तव्यम् (martavyam) - to die; इति (iti) - thus; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having contemplated; भामिनी (bhāminī) - the lady; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; त्रिरात्रम् (trirātram) - three nights; उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - having intended; दिवारात्रम् (divārātram) - day and night; स्थिताभवत् (sthitā'bhavat) - remained;]
(On the fourth day, to die thus, having contemplated, the lady, vow three nights having intended, day and night, remained.)
The lady, having contemplated, "I must die on the fourth day," resolved to undertake a vow for three nights and remained steadfast day and night. (03-280-3)
तं श्रुत्वा नियमं दुःखं वध्वा दुःखान्वितो नृपः। उत्थाय वाक्यं सावित्रीमब्रवीत्परिसान्त्वयन् ॥०३-२८०-४॥
taṃ śrutvā niyamaṃ duḥkhaṃ vadhvā duḥkhānvito nṛpaḥ। utthāya vākyaṃ sāvitryam abravīt parisāntvayan ॥03-280-4॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; नियमं (niyamaṃ) - vow; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - sorrow; वध्वा (vadhvā) - by the bride; दुःखान्वितः (duḥkhānvitaḥ) - afflicted with sorrow; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - words; सावित्रीम् (sāvitrym) - to Sāvitrī; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; परिसान्त्वयन् (parisāntvayan) - consoling;]
(Him having heard the vow (and) sorrow by the bride, afflicted with sorrow, the king, having risen, (his) words to Sāvitrī said consoling.)
Having heard the painful vow from the bride, the sorrow-stricken king rose up and addressed consoling words to Sāvitrī. (03-280-4)
अतितीव्रोऽयमारम्भस्त्वयारब्धो नृपात्मजे। तिसृणां वसतीनां हि स्थानं परमदुष्करम् ॥०३-२८०-५॥
atitīvro'yamārambhas tvayārabdhaḥ nṛpātmaje. tisṛṇāṃ vasatīnāṃ hi sthānaṃ paramaduṣkaram॥03-280-5॥
[अतितीव्रः (atitīvraḥ) (atitīvraḥ) - very intense; अयम् (ayam) (ayam) - this; आरम्भः (ārambhaḥ) (ārambhaḥ) - undertaking; त्वया (tvayā) (tvayā) - by you; आरब्धः (ārabdhaḥ) (ārabdhaḥ) - has been begun; नृपात्मजे (nṛpātmaje) (nṛpātmaje) - O princess; तिसृणाम् (tisṛṇām) (tisṛṇām) - of the three; वसतीनाम् (vasatīnām) (vasatīnām) - of dwellings; हि (hi) (hi) - indeed; स्थानम् (sthānam) (sthānam) - place; परमदुष्करम् (paramaduṣkaram) (paramaduṣkaram) - extremely difficult;]
(Very intense this undertaking by you has been begun, O princess. Of the three dwellings indeed, the place is extremely difficult.)
O princess, you have begun a very intense undertaking. Indeed, it is extremely difficult to find a place for the three dwellings. (03-280-5)
सावित्र्युवाच॥

na kāryastāta santāpaḥ pārayiṣyāmyahaṁ vratam। vyavasāyakṛtaṁ hīdaṁ vyavasāyaśca kāraṇam ॥03-280-6॥
[न (na) - not; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - to be done; तात (tāta) - dear one; सन्तापः (santāpaḥ) - grief; पारयिष्यामि (pārayiṣyāmi) - I shall accomplish; अहम् (aham) - I; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; व्यवसायकृतं (vyavasāyakṛtam) - done by resolve; हि (hi) - indeed; इदं (idaṁ) - this; व्यवसायः (vyavasāyaḥ) - firm resolve; च (ca) - and; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause;]
(Not to be done, dear one, is grief; I shall accomplish the vow. Indeed, this is done by resolve, and resolve is the cause.)
Grief, dear one, is not appropriate; I will fulfill the vow. Indeed, this is accomplished by resolve, and resolve itself is the cause. (03-280-6)
द्युमत्सेन उवाच॥

vrataṃ bhindhīti vaktuṃ tvāṃ nāsmi śaktaḥ kathañcana। pārayasveti vacanaṃ yuktamasmad-vidho vadet ॥03-280-7॥
[व्रतं (vrataṃ) - vow; भिन्धी (bhindhī) - break (imperative); इति (iti) - thus; वक्तुं (vaktum) - to say; त्वां (tvām) - to you; न (na) - not; अस्मि (asmi) - am; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - by any means; पारयस्व (pārayasva) - fulfil (imperative); इति (iti) - thus; वचनं (vacanam) - statement; युक्तं (yuktam) - appropriate; अस्मद्विधः (asmad-vidhaḥ) - one like me; वदेत् (vadet) - should say;]
(Vow break thus to say to you not am capable by any means; fulfil thus statement appropriate one like me should say.)
I am by no means able to say to you, "Break your vow;" a person like me should appropriately say, "Fulfil it." (03-280-7)

evam-uktvā dyumatseno virarāma mahāmanāḥ। tiṣṭhantī cāpi sāvitri kāṣṭhabhūteva lakṣyate ॥03-280-8॥

(Thus having spoken, Dyumatsena, great-minded, ceased. Standing and also Sāvitrī, as if having become like wood, is seen.)
Thus, having spoken, the great-minded Dyumatsena became silent. Sāvitrī, standing there, appeared as if she had become like wood. (03-280-8)
श्वोभूते भर्तृमरणे सावित्र्या भरतर्षभ। दुःखान्वितायास्तिष्ठन्त्याः सा रात्रिर्व्यत्यवर्तत ॥०३-२८०-९॥
śvobhūte bhartṛmaraṇe sāvitryā bharatarṣabha। duḥkhānvitāyāstiṣṭhantyāḥ sā rātrirvyatyavartata ॥03-280-9॥
[श्वः-भूते (śvaḥ-bhūte) - when the next day had come; भर्तृ-मरणे (bhartṛ-maraṇe) - upon (her) husband’s death; सावित्र्या (sāvitryā) - by Sāvitrī; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; दुःखान्वितायाः (duḥkhānvitāyāḥ) - filled with sorrow; तिष्ठन्त्याः (tiṣṭhantyāḥ) - while remaining (there); सा (sā) - that; रात्रिः (rātriḥ) - night; व्यत्यवर्तत (vyatyavartata) - passed;]
(When the next day had come, upon her husband’s death, by Sāvitrī, O best of the Bharatas, filled with sorrow, while remaining (there), that night passed.)

अद्य तद्दिवसं चेति हुत्वा दीप्तं हुताशनम्। युगमात्रोदिते सूर्ये कृत्वा पौर्वाह्णिकीः क्रियाः ॥०३-२८०-१०॥
adya taddivasaṁ ceti hutvā dīptaṁ hutāśanam। yugamātroditē sūryē kṛtvā paurvāhṇikīḥ kriyāḥ ॥03-280-10॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; तद्दिवसं (taddivasaṁ) - that very day; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; हुत्वा (hutvā) - having offered (oblations); दीप्तं (dīptam) - blazing; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - the fire (Agni); युगमात्रोदिते (yugamātroditē) - as soon as (the) sun has just risen; सूर्ये (sūrye) - when the sun; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; पौर्वाह्णिकीः (paurvāhṇikīḥ) - morning; क्रियाः (kriyāḥ) - rites;]
(Today, that very day, and thus, having offered the blazing fire, as soon as the sun had just risen, having performed the morning rites.)
On that very day, today, thus having offered oblations into the blazing fire, and when the sun had just risen, having completed the morning rites. (03-280-10)
ततः सर्वान्द्विजान्वृद्धाञ्श्वश्रूं श्वशुरमेव च। अभिवाद्यानुपूर्व्येण प्राञ्जलिर्नियता स्थिता ॥०३-२८०-११॥
tataḥ sarvān dvijān vṛddhāñ śvaśrūṃ śvaśuram eva ca। abhivādyān upūrvyēṇa prāñjalir niyatā sthitā॥03-280-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; द्विजान् (dvijān) - the twice-born; वृद्धान् (vṛddhān) - elders; श्वश्रूं (śvaśrūm) - mother-in-law; श्वशुरम् (śvaśuram) - father-in-law; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अभिवाद्यान् (abhivādyān) - those to be saluted; अनुपूर्व्येण (anupūrvyeṇa) - in proper order; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; नियता (niyatā) - self-controlled; स्था (sthitā) - stood;]
(Then, all the twice-born, elders, mother-in-law, father-in-law indeed and, those to be saluted, in proper order, with joined palms, self-controlled, stood.)
Then (she) stood with joined palms, self-controlled, having saluted in proper order all the twice-born, elders, mother-in-law, and father-in-law. (03-280-11)
अवैधव्याशिषस्ते तु सावित्र्यर्थं हिताः शुभाः। ऊचुस्तपस्विनः सर्वे तपोवननिवासिनः ॥०३-२८०-१२॥
avaidhavyāśiṣas te tu sāvitryarthaṃ hitāḥ śubhāḥ। ūcus tapasvinaḥ sarve tapovananivāsinaḥ ॥03-280-12॥
[अवैधव्याशिषः (avaidhavyāśiṣaḥ) - blessings for freedom from widowhood; ते (te) - to you; तु (tu) - but; सावित्र्यर्थम् (sāvitryartham) - for Sāvitrī (you, Sāvitrī); हिताः (hitāḥ) - beneficial; शुभाः (śubhāḥ) - auspicious; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - spoke; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तपोवननिवासिनः (tapovananivāsinaḥ) - those dwelling in the hermitage (forest of austerities);]
(Blessings for freedom from widowhood, to you but, for Sāvitrī, beneficial, auspicious—they spoke, the ascetics all, those dwelling in the hermitage.)
But all the ascetics dwelling in the hermitage spoke auspicious and beneficial blessings for Sāvitrī, wishing her freedom from widowhood. (03-280-12)
एवमस्त्विति सावित्री ध्यानयोगपरायणा। मनसा ता गिरः सर्वाः प्रत्यगृह्णात्तपस्विनाम् ॥०३-२८०-१३॥
evam astv iti sāvitrī dhyānayogaparāyaṇā। manasā tā giraḥ sarvāḥ pratyagṛhṇāt tapasvinām ॥03-280-13॥

(Thus, let it be—Savitri, devoted to the discipline of meditation, with her mind accepted all those utterances of the ascetics.)
“Let it be so”—Savitri, devoted to meditation, accepted in her mind all the utterances of the ascetics. (03-280-13)
तं कालं च मुहूर्तं च प्रतीक्षन्ती नृपात्मजा। यथोक्तं नारदवचश्चिन्तयन्ती सुदुःखिता ॥०३-२८०-१४॥
taṃ kālaṃ ca muhūrtaṃ ca pratīkṣantī nṛpātmajā। yathoktaṃ nāradavacaścintayantī suduḥkhitā ॥03-280-14॥

(That time and moment waiting, the king's daughter, as spoken Nārada's word reflecting, very distressed.)
The king's daughter, very distressed, waited for that time and moment, reflecting on Nārada's words as spoken. (03-280-14)
ततस्तु श्वश्रूश्वशुरावूचतुस्तां नृपात्मजाम्। एकान्तस्थमिदं वाक्यं प्रीत्या भरतसत्तम ॥०३-२८०-१५॥
tatastu śvaśrūśvaśurāvūcatustāṃ nṛpātmajām। ekāntastham idaṃ vākyaṃ prītyā bharatasattama ॥03-280-15॥

vrato yathopadiṣṭo'yaṃ yathāvat pārītaḥ tvayā। āhāra-kālaḥ samprāptaḥ kriyatāṃ yad anantaram ॥03-280-16॥

(The vow, as instructed, this, properly, carried out by you. Mealtime has come. Let that which is next be done.)
This vow, instructed as it was, has been properly completed by you. Mealtime has arrived; let what should come next be done. (03-280-16)

astaṃ gate mayāditye bhoktavyaṃ kṛtakāmayā। eṣa me hṛdi saṅkalpaḥ samayaś ca kṛto mayā ॥03-280-17॥
[अस्तं गते (astaṃ gate) - having set; gone; (i.e., after the sun has set;) मया (mayā) - by me; आदित्ये (āditye) - the sun; भोक्तव्यम् (bhoktavyam) - to be eaten; कृतकामया (kṛtakāmayā) - having fulfilled desire; एष (eṣa) - this; मे (me) - of me; my; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; सङ्कल्पः (saṅkalpaḥ) - resolve; determination; समयः (samayaḥ) - agreement; pledge; च (ca) - and; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Having set gone by me (when the sun sets), food is to be eaten, by one whose desire is fulfilled. This is my resolve in the heart, and an agreement also has been made by me.)
I have resolved in my heart and pledged that after the sun has set, food should be eaten only by one whose desire is fulfilled. (03-280-17)

Sāvitrī said to her husband: "You should not go alone; I will go with you, for indeed I am not able to abandon you." (03-280-19)

vanaṃ na gatapūrvaṃ te duḥkhaḥ panthāś ca bhāmini। vratopavāsakṣāmā ca kathaṃ padbhyāṃ gamiṣyasi॥03-280-20॥

(Forest not gone before by you, painful paths and, O beautiful one, emaciated by vows and fasting and, how on (your) feet will you go? (03-280-20))
O beautiful one, you have not gone to the forest before; the paths are painful, and you are emaciated by vows and fasting—how will you go on foot? (03-280-20)

upavāsānna me glānir nāsti cāpi pariśramaḥ। gamane ca kṛtotsāhāṃ pratiṣeddhuṃ na mārhasi ॥03-280-21॥
[उपवासात् (upavāsāt) - from fasting; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; ग्लानिः (glāniḥ) - fatigue; नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; परिश्रमः (pariśramaḥ) - exhaustion; गमने (gamane) - in going; च (ca) - and; कृतोत्साहाम् (kṛtotsāhām) - having made up mind (having become enthusiastic/ready); प्रतिषेद्धुम् (pratiṣeddhum) - to prevent; न (na) - not; मार्हसि (mārhasi) - you ought; ॥०३-२८०-२१॥ (॥03-280-21॥) -;]
(From fasting, not to me fatigue is; nor also exhaustion. And in going, me having become enthusiastic, to prevent not you ought.)
Because of fasting, I do not have fatigue or exhaustion; and as I am eager to go, you should not prevent me. (03-280-21)

[यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - for you; गमनोत्साहः (gamanotsāhaḥ) - desire for departure; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; तव (tava) - your; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasing (thing); मम (mama) - my; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनत्रय (antraya) - without informing; गुरून् (gurūn) - elders; न (na) - not; माम् (mām) - me; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; स्पृशेत् (spṛśet) - should touch; अयम् (ayam) - this;]
(If for you desire for departure I will do your pleasing (thing). My without informing the elders, not me should this fault touch.)
If, for your sake, I carry out the desire to depart and do what pleases you, may this fault not touch me for not informing my elders. (03-280-22)

sābhigamyābravīcchvaśrūṁ śvaśuraṁ ca mahāvratā। ayaṁ gacchati me bhartā phalāhāro mahāvanam ॥03-280-23॥
[सा (sā) - she; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; श्वश्रूं (śvaśrūm) - mother-in-law; श्वशुरं (śvaśuram) - father-in-law; च (ca) - and; महाव्रता (mahāvratā) - the great observer of vows; अयम् (ayam) - this (he); गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; मे (me) - my; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; फलाहारः (phalāhāraḥ) - living on fruits; महावनम् (mahāvanam) - to the great forest;]
(She, having approached, said to her mother-in-law and father-in-law, the great observer of vows: This my husband, living on fruits, goes to the great forest.)

इच्छेयमभ्यनुज्ञातुमार्यया श्वशुरेण च। अनेन सह निर्गन्तुं न हि मे विरहः क्षमः ॥०३-२८०-२४॥
iccheyam abhyanujñātum āryayā śvaśureṇa ca। anena saha nirgantuṃ na hi me viraḥ kṣamaḥ॥03-280-24॥

(I would wish to be permitted by the noble lady and by the father-in-law to depart together with him; for separation is not bearable for me.)
I wish to be allowed by the noble lady and by my father-in-law to leave together with him, for I cannot endure separation. (03-280-24)
गुर्वग्निहोत्रार्थकृते प्रस्थितश्च सुतस्तव। न निवार्यो निवार्यः स्यादन्यथा प्रस्थितो वनम् ॥०३-२८०-२५॥
gurvagnihotrārthakṛte prasthitaś ca sutas tava। na nivāryo nivāryaḥ syād anyathā prasthito vanam॥03-280-25॥
[गुरु-अग्निहोत्र-अर्थ-कृते (guru-agnihotra-artha-kṛte) - for the sake of service to the guru and agnihotra; प्रस्थितः (prasthitaḥ) - departed; च (ca) - and; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; तव (tava) - your; न (na) - not; निवार्यः (nivāryaḥ) - one to be restrained; निवार्यः (nivāryaḥ) - one to be restrained; स्यात् (syāt) - should become; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; प्रस्थितः (prasthitaḥ) - departed; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest;]
(For the sake of service to the guru and agnihotra, your son has departed, and he should not be restrained; otherwise, having departed to the forest, he would become one to be restrained.)
Your son has departed for the sake of service to the guru and agnihotra, and he should not be restrained; if otherwise, having gone to the forest, he would become blameworthy. (03-280-25)
संवत्सरः किञ्चिदूनो न निष्क्रान्ताहमाश्रमात्। वनं कुसुमितं द्रष्टुं परं कौतूहलं हि मे ॥०३-२८०-२६॥
saṁvatsaraḥ kiñcid ūno na niṣkrāntāham āśramāt। vanaṁ kusumitaṁ draṣṭuṁ paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me॥03-280-26॥
[संवत्सरः (saṁvatsaraḥ) - year; किञ्चिदूनः (kiñcid ūnaḥ) - somewhat less; न (na) - not; निष्क्रान्ता (niṣkrāntā) - departed; अहम् (aham) - I; आश्रमात् (āśramāt) - from the āśrama; वनं (vanaṁ) - forest; कुसुमितं (kusumitaṁ) - blooming; द्रष्टुं (draṣṭum) - to see; परं (paraṁ) - supreme; कौतूहलं (kautūhalaṁ) - curiosity; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me;]
(Year somewhat less not departed I from the āśrama. The forest blooming to see supreme curiosity indeed to me.)
It is a little less than a year since I have not left the āśrama. I have a great curiosity to see the blooming forest. (03-280-26)

yataḥ prabhṛti sāvitrī pitrā dattā snuṣā mama। nānayābhyarthanāyuktamuktapūrvaṃ smarāmyaham ॥03-280-27॥

(Since from the beginning Savitri, given by the father, my daughter-in-law, not by her accompanied by entreaty previously said I remember I.)
Since the time when Savitri was given to me as a daughter-in-law by her father, I do not remember her ever having spoken previously with any entreaty. (03-280-27)
तदेषा लभतां कामं यथाभिलषितं वधूः। अप्रमादश्च कर्तव्यः पुत्रि सत्यवतः पथि ॥०३-२८०-२८॥
tadeṣā labhatāṃ kāmaṃ yathābhilaṣitaṃ vadhūḥ। apramādaś ca kartavyaḥ putri satyavataḥ pathi ॥03-280-28॥
[तत् (tat) - therefore; एषा (eṣā) - this (woman); लभताम् (labhatām) - may obtain; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; यथा-अभिलषितम् (yathā-abhilaṣitam) - as desired; वधूः (vadhūḥ) - bride; अप्रमादः (apramādaḥ) - vigilance; च (ca) - and; कर्तव्यः (kartavyaḥ) - must be done; पुत्रि (putri) - O daughter; सत्यवतः (satyavataḥ) - of the truthful (one); पथि (pathi) - on the path;]
(Therefore, let this (bride) obtain her desire as desired. And vigilance must be maintained, O daughter, on the path of the truthful.)
Therefore, let this bride obtain what she desires as she wishes. And, O daughter, vigilance must be observed on the path of the truthful. (03-280-28)
मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

ubhābhyām abhyanujñātā sā jagāma yaśasvinī। saha bhartrā hasantīva hṛdayena vidūyatā॥03-280-29॥

(Having been permitted by both, she, the illustrious one, went with her husband, as if smiling, with her heart rent.)
Granted leave by both, the renowned lady departed with her husband, as if smiling, though her heart was torn. (03-280-29)
सा वनानि विचित्राणि रमणीयानि सर्वशः। मयूररवघुष्टानि ददर्श विपुलेक्षणा ॥०३-२८०-३०॥
sā vanāni vicitrāṇi ramaṇīyāni sarvaśaḥ। mayūrava-ghuṣṭāni dadarśa vipulekṣaṇā ॥03-280-30॥
[सा (sā) - she; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - variegated; रमणीयानि (ramaṇīyāni) - beautiful; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - everywhere; मयूररवघुष्टानि (mayūrava-ghuṣṭāni) - echoing with peacock cries; ददर्श (dadarśa) - she saw; विपुलेक्षणा (vipulekṣaṇā) - large-eyed one;]
(She forests variegated beautiful everywhere echoing with peacock cries she saw large-eyed one.)
The large-eyed one saw the forests everywhere, variegated and beautiful, echoing with the cries of peacocks. (03-280-30)
नदीः पुण्यवहाश्चैव पुष्पितांश्च नगोत्तमान्। सत्यवानाह पश्येति सावित्रीं मधुराक्षरम् ॥०३-२८०-३१॥
nadīḥ puṇyavahāścaiva puṣpitāṃśca nagottamān। satyavānāha paśyeti sāvitrīṃ madhurākṣaram ॥03-280-31॥
[नदीः (nadīḥ) - rivers; पुण्यवहाः (puṇyavahāḥ) - meritorious-carrying; (sacred-flowing; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पुष्पितान् (puṣpitān) - flowered; च (ca) - and; नगोत्तमान् (nagottamān) - best of mountains; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavan; आह (āha) - said; पश्य (paśya) - see; इति (iti) - thus; सावित्रीं (sāvitrīm) - to Sāvitrī; मधुराक्षरम् (madhurākṣaram) - with sweet words;]
(Rivers, meritorious-carrying and indeed flowered and best of mountains; Satyavan said "See!" thus to Sāvitrī with sweet words.)
Satyavan, with sweet words, said to Sāvitrī, "See the rivers that carry merit and the best of flowered mountains." (03-280-31)
निरीक्षमाणा भर्तारं सर्वावस्थमनिन्दिता। मृतमेव हि तं मेने काले मुनिवचः स्मरन् ॥०३-२८०-३२॥
nirīkṣamāṇā bhartāraṃ sarvāvasthamaninditā। mṛtameva hi taṃ mene kāle munivacaḥ smaran ॥03-280-32॥
[निरीक्षमाणा (nirīkṣamāṇā) - observing; भर्तारं (bhartāram) - husband (object); सर्वावस्थम् (sarvāvastham) - in all conditions; अनिन्दिता (aninditā) - the blameless one; मृतम् (mṛtam) - dead; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - for; तं (taṃ) - him; मेने (mene) - considered; काले (kāle) - at that time; मुनिवचः (munivacaḥ) - sage's words; स्मरन् (smaran) - remembering;]
(Observing her husband in all conditions, the blameless one indeed considered him as dead, at that time remembering the sage's words.)
As she looked upon her husband in every condition, the blameless woman indeed thought him dead, recalling the words of the sage at that time. (03-280-32)
अनुवर्तती तु भर्तारं जगाम मृदुगामिनी। द्विधेव हृदयं कृत्वा तं च कालमवेक्षती ॥०३-२८०-३३॥
anuvartatī tu bhartāraṃ jagāma mṛdugāminī। dvidheva hṛdayaṃ kṛtvā taṃ ca kālamavekṣatī ॥03-280-33॥
[अनुवर्तती (anuvartatī) - she who follows; तु (tu) - but; भर्तारं (bhartāram) - husband (accusative singular); जगाम (jagāma) - went; मृदुगामिनी (mṛdugāminī) - she of gentle gait; द्विधा (dvidhā) - as if in two; इव (iva) - as if; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; कालम् (kālam) - the time; अवेक्षती (avekṣatī) - looking at;]
(Following but her husband, she of gentle gait went, as if having made the heart in two, at him and at the time looking.)
But she of gentle gait followed her husband, having as if divided her heart in two, looking at both him and the time. (03-280-33)
