अथ भार्यासहायः स फलान्यादाय वीर्यवान्। कठिनं पूरयामास ततः काष्ठान्यपाटयत् ॥०३-२८१-१॥
atha bhāryāsahāyaḥ sa phalānyādāya vīryavān। kaṭhinaṁ pūrayāmāsa tataḥ kāṣṭhānyapāṭayat ॥03-281-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; भार्यासहायः (bhāryāsahāyaḥ) - with wife as helper; स (sa) - he; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - strong; कठिनं (kaṭhinaṁ) - hard; पूरयामास (pūrayāmāsa) - he filled; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; काष्ठानि (kāṣṭhāni) - wood; अपाटयत् (apāṭayat) - he split;]
(Then, with wife as helper, he, strong, having taken fruits, hard, he filled; thereafter, wood, he split.)
Then, with his wife as his helper, the strong man, having gathered fruits, filled (the hard container); thereafter, he split the wood. (03-281-1)
तस्य पाटयतः काष्ठं स्वेदो वै समजायत। व्यायामेन च तेनास्य जज्ञे शिरसि वेदना ॥०३-२८१-२॥
tasya pāṭayataḥ kāṣṭhaṃ svedo vai samajāyata। vyāyāmena ca tenāsya jajñe śirasi vedanā॥03-281-2॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; पाटयतः (pāṭayataḥ) - breaking; काष्ठं (kāṣṭham) - wood; स्वेदः (svedaḥ) - sweat; वै (vai) - indeed; समजायत (samajāyata) - arose; व्यायामेन (vyāyāmena) - by exertion; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by him; अस्य (asya) - his; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was produced; शिरसि (śirasi) - in the head; वेदनाः (vedanā) - pain;]
(Of him breaking wood, sweat indeed arose. By exertion and by him, his pain was produced in the head.)
As he was breaking the wood, sweat indeed arose for him. Due to exertion, pain in his head was produced. (03-281-2)
सोऽभिगम्य प्रियां भार्यामुवाच श्रमपीडितः। व्यायामेन ममानेन जाता शिरसि वेदना ॥०३-२८१-३॥
so'bhigamya priyāṁ bhāryām uvāca śramapīḍitaḥ। vyāyāmena mamānena jātā śirasi vedanā॥03-281-3॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; प्रियां (priyām) - dear; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; उवाच (uvāca) - said; श्रमपीडितः (śramapīḍitaḥ) - afflicted by fatigue; व्यायामेन (vyāyāmena) - by exertion; मम (mama) - my; अनेन (anena) - by this; जाता (jātā) - has arisen; शिरसि (śirasi) - in (my) head; वेदना (vedanā) - pain;]
(He, having approached (his) dear wife, said, afflicted by fatigue: By this exertion, pain has arisen in my head.)
Afflicted by fatigue, he approached his beloved wife and said: "Because of this exertion, I have developed pain in my head." (03-281-3)
अङ्गानि चैव सावित्रि हृदयं दूयतीव च। अस्वस्थमिव चात्मानं लक्षये मितभाषिणि ॥०३-२८१-४॥
aṅgāni caiva sāvitrī hṛdayaṃ dūyatīva ca। asvasthamiva cātmānaṃ lakṣaye mitabhāṣiṇi ॥03-281-4॥
[अङ्गानि (aṅgāni) - limbs; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सावित्रि (sāvitrī) - O Sāvitrī; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; दूयतीव (dūyatīva) - as if being pained; च (ca) - and; अस्वस्थम् (asvastham) - not at ease; इव (iva) - as if; च (ca) - and; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; लक्षये (lakṣaye) - I perceive; मितभाषिणि (mitabhāṣiṇi) - O sparingly-speaking one;]
(Limbs and indeed, O Sāvitrī, heart as if being pained and as if not at ease, and myself I perceive, O sparingly-speaking one.)
O Sāvitrī, my limbs and indeed my heart seem as if they are suffering, and I feel as if I myself am not at ease, O you who speak little. (03-281-4)
शूलैरिव शिरो विद्धमिदं संलक्षयाम्यहम्। तत्स्वप्तुमिच्छे कल्याणि न स्थातुं शक्तिरस्ति मे ॥०३-२८१-५॥
śūlair iva śiro viddham idaṃ saṃlakṣayāmy aham। tat svaptum icche kalyāṇi na sthātuṃ śaktir asti me॥03-281-5॥
[शूलैः (śūlaiḥ) - by spears; इव (iva) - as if; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; विद्धम् (viddham) - pierced; इदं (idaṃ) - this; संलक्षयामि (saṃlakṣayāmi) - I perceive; अहम् (aham) - I; तत् (tat) - therefore; स्वप्तुम् (svaptum) - to sleep; इच्छे (icche) - I desire; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; न (na) - not; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to stand; शक्ति: (śaktiḥ) - strength; अस्ति (asti) - is; मे (me) - to me;]
(As if by spears, the head pierced, this I perceive, I; therefore to sleep I desire, O auspicious one; not to stand strength is to me (03-281-5))
I perceive my head as if pierced by spears, O auspicious one; therefore, I wish to sleep, for I do not have the strength to stand (03-281-5).
समासाद्याथ सावित्री भर्तारमुपगूह्य च। उत्सङ्गेऽस्य शिरः कृत्वा निषसाद महीतले ॥०३-२८१-६॥
samāsādyātha sāvitri bhartāram upagūhya ca। utsaṅge'sya śiraḥ kṛtvā niṣasāda mahītale ॥03-281-6॥

(Having approached then Sāvitrī, her husband having embraced and, on (his) lap his head having placed, sat down on the ground.)
Then Sāvitrī approached, embraced her husband, placed his head on her lap, and sat down on the ground. (03-281-6)
ततः सा नारदवचो विमृशन्ती तपस्विनी। तं मुहूर्तं क्षणं वेलां दिवसं च युयोज ह ॥०३-२८१-७॥
tataḥ sā nāradavaco vimṛśantī tapasvinī। taṃ muhūrtaṃ kṣaṇaṃ velāṃ divasaṃ ca yuyoja ha ॥03-281-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; नारदवचः (nāradavacaḥ) - Nārada's words; विमृशन्ती (vimṛśantī) - pondering; तपस्विनी (tapasvinī) - ascetic woman; तं (taṃ) - that; मुहूर्तं (muhūrtam) - moment; क्षणं (kṣaṇam) - instant; वेलां (velāṃ) - interval; दिवसं (divasaṃ) - day; च (ca) - and; युयोज (yuyoja) - applied; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then she, the ascetic woman, pondering Nārada's words, applied that moment, instant, interval, and day indeed.)

मुहूर्तादिव चापश्यत्पुरुषं पीतवाससम्। बद्धमौलिं वपुष्मन्तमादित्यसमतेजसम् ॥०३-२८१-८॥
muhūrtādiva cāpaśyatpuruṣaṃ pītavāsasam। baddhamauliṃ vapuṣmantamādityasamatejasam ॥03-281-8॥
[मुहूर्तादिव (muhūrtādiva) - as if for a moment; च (ca) - and; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - a man; पीतवाससम् (pītavāsasam) - clad in yellow garments; बद्धमौलिं (baddhamaulim) - with the hair tied up; वपुष्मन्तम् (vapuṣmantam) - possessing a splendid form; आदित्यसमतेजसम् (ādityasamatejasam) - having effulgence equal to the sun;]
(As if for a moment, and he saw a man clad in yellow garments, with hair tied up, possessing a splendid form, having effulgence equal to the sun.)

श्यामावदातं रक्ताक्षं पाशहस्तं भयावहम्। स्थितं सत्यवतः पार्श्वे निरीक्षन्तं तमेव च ॥०३-२८१-९॥
śyāmāvadātaṃ raktākṣaṃ pāśahastaṃ bhayāvaham। sthitaṃ satyavataḥ pārśve nirīkṣantaṃ tameva ca ॥03-281-9॥
[श्यामावदातं (śyāmāvadātaṃ) - dark and bright; (having dusky and fair color); रक्ताक्षं (raktākṣaṃ) - red-eyed; पाशहस्तं (pāśahastaṃ) - holding a noose in (his) hand; भयावहम् (bhayāvaham) - causing fear; स्थितं (sthitaṃ) - standing; सत्यवतः (satyavataḥ) - of Satyavata (a proper name, genitive); पार्श्वे (pārśve) - at the side (of); निरीक्षन्तं (nirīkṣantaṃ) - observing; तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - only; च (ca) - and;]
(Dark and bright, red-eyed, holding a noose in (his) hand, causing fear, standing at the side of Satyavata, observing only him and (him alone).)
He was dark and bright, red-eyed, holding a noose in his hand, fearsome, standing by the side of Satyavata, looking intently only at him. (03-281-9)
तं दृष्ट्वा सहसोत्थाय भर्तुर्न्यस्य शनैः शिरः। कृताञ्जलिरुवाचार्ता हृदयेन प्रवेपता ॥०३-२८१-१०॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā sahasotthāya bharturnyasya śanaiḥ śiraḥ। kṛtāñjaliruvācārtā hṛdayena pravepatā॥03-281-10॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of (her) husband; न्यस्य (nyasya) - placing (down); शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; उवाच (uvāca) - said; आर्ता (ārtā) - afflicted; हृदयेन (hṛdayena) - with (her) heart; प्रवेपता (pravepatā) - trembling;]
(Having seen him, suddenly having risen, placing (down) her head slowly at (the feet) of (her) husband, with joined palms, afflicted, with her heart trembling, she said.)
Seeing him, she suddenly rose, slowly placed her head at her husband's feet, joined her palms, and, afflicted and with a trembling heart, spoke. (03-281-10)
दैवतं त्वाभिजानामि वपुरेतद्ध्यमानुषम्। कामया ब्रूहि मे देव कस्त्वं किं च चिकीर्षसि ॥०३-२८१-११॥
daivataṃ tvābhijānāmi vapur etad dhyamānuṣam। kāmayā brūhi me deva kas tvaṃ kiṃ ca cikīrṣasi॥03-281-11॥
[दैवतं (daivataṃ) - divine being; a deity; त्वा (tvā) - you; अभिजानामि (abhijānāmi) - I recognize; वपुः (vapuḥ) - form; एतत् (etat) - this; ध्यमानुषम् (dhyamānuṣam) - in human (manuṣa) appearance; कामया (kāmayā) - with desire; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - say; tell; मे (me) - to me; देव (deva) - O god; कः (kaḥ) - who; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; किम् (kim) - what; च (ca) - and; चिकीर्षसि (cikīrṣasi) - do you wish to do;]
(A divine being you I recognize; form this in human (appearance); with desire say to me O god who you, what and do you wish to do;)
I recognize you as a divine being—this form is merely human. Out of desire, tell me, O god: who are you, and what is it that you wish to do? (03-281-11)

पतिव्रतासि सावित्रि तथैव च तपोन्विता। अतस्त्वामभिभाषामि विद्धि मां त्वं शुभे यमम् ॥०३-२८१-१२॥
pativratāsi sāvitri tathaiva ca taponvitā। atastvāmabhibhāṣāmi viddhi māṁ tvaṁ śubhe yamam॥03-281-12॥
[पतिव्रता (pativratā) - devoted to husband; असि (asi) - you are; सावित्रि (sāvitri) - Sāvitrī; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; अन्विता (anvitā) - endowed with; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अभिभाषामि (abhibhāṣāmi) - I address; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; माम् (mām) - me; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; यमम् (yamam) - Yama;]
(Devoted to husband you are, Sāvitrī, likewise also endowed with austerity; therefore I address you—know me, you, O auspicious one, (as) Yama.)
You are devoted to your husband, Sāvitrī, and also endowed with austerity; therefore I address you—know me, O auspicious one, to be Yama. (03-281-12)
अयं ते सत्यवान्भर्ता क्षीणायुः पार्थिवात्मजः। नेष्याम्येनमहं बद्ध्वा विद्ध्येतन्मे चिकीर्षितम् ॥०३-२८१-१३॥
ayaṃ te satyavān-bhartā kṣīṇāyuḥ pārthivātmajaḥ। neṣyāmyenam ahaṃ baddhvā viddhy etan me cikīrṣitam॥03-281-13॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; ते (te) - to you; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavān; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; क्षीणायुः (kṣīṇāyuḥ) - with diminished life-span; पार्थिवात्मजः (pārthivātmajaḥ) - son of the king; नेष्यामि (neṣyāmi) - I will lead; एनम् (enam) - him; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having bound; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; एतत् (etat) - this; मे (me) - my; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - intended action;]
(This, to you, Satyavān, husband, with diminished life-span, son of the king; I will lead him, I, having bound; know this my intended action.)
This Satyavān, your husband, the son of the king whose life-span is diminished, I will lead him away having bound him; know this as my intended action. (03-281-13)

इत्युक्त्वा पितृराजस्तां भगवान्स्वं चिकीर्षितम्। यथावत्सर्वमाख्यातुं तत्प्रियार्थं प्रचक्रमे ॥०३-२८१-१४॥
ity-uktvā pitṛ-rājaḥ tām bhagavān svaṃ cikīrṣitam। yathāvat sarvam ākhyātum tat-priya-artham pracakrame ॥03-281-14॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; पितृराजः (pitṛ-rājaḥ) - king of the fathers (ancestors); ताम् (tām) - to her; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; स्वम् (svam) - his own; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - that which is intended to be done; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as it is; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातुम् (ākhyātum) - to declare; तत् (tat) - that; प्रियार्थम् (priya-artham) - for the sake of [her] dear one; प्रचक्रमे (pracakrame) - he commenced;]
(Thus having spoken, the king of the fathers to her, the revered one, his own intended act, as it is, all, to declare, for the sake of her dear one, he commenced.)
Having thus spoken to her, the king of the fathers, the revered one, began to declare in full his own intentions, for the sake of her beloved. (03-281-14)
अयं हि धर्मसंयुक्तो रूपवान्गुणसागरः। नार्हो मत्पुरुषैर्नेतुमतोऽस्मि स्वयमागतः ॥०३-२८१-१५॥
ayaṁ hi dharmasaṁyukto rūpavān guṇasāgaraḥ। nārho matpuruṣair netum ato'smi svayam āgataḥ॥03-281-15॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this (person); हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मसंयुक्तः (dharmasaṁyuktaḥ) - joined with righteousness; रूपवान् (rūpavān) - possessing beauty; गुणसागरः (guṇasāgaraḥ) - ocean of virtues; नार्हः (nārahaḥ) - not deserving; मत्पुरुषैः (matpuruṣaiḥ) - by my men; नेतुम् (netum) - to be led; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; अस्मि (asmi) - am; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; आगतः (āgataḥ) - come;]
(This indeed joined with righteousness, possessing beauty, ocean of virtues, not deserving by my men to be led; therefore I myself am come.)
Truly, this one, endowed with righteousness, beauty, and an ocean of virtues, does not deserve to be escorted by my men; therefore, I have come myself. (03-281-15)
ततः सत्यवतः कायात्पाशबद्धं वशं गतम्। अङ्गुष्ठमात्रं पुरुषं निश्चकर्ष यमो बलात् ॥०३-२८१-१६॥
tataḥ satyavataḥ kāyāt pāśa-baddhaṃ vaśaṃ gatam। aṅguṣṭha-mātraṃ puruṣaṃ niścakarṣa yamo balāt ॥03-281-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; सत्यवतः (satyavataḥ) - of Satyavat; कायात् (kāyāt) - from (his) body; पाशबद्धं (pāśa-baddham) - bound with a noose; वशं (vaśam) - subject; गतम् (gatam) - having gone; अङ्गुष्ठमात्रं (aṅguṣṭha-mātram) - of the size of a thumb; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - person; निश्चकर्ष (niścakarṣa) - he pulled out; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; बलात् (balāt) - by force;]
(Thereafter, from the body of Satyavat, having become subject, bound with a noose, a person of the size of a thumb, Yama pulled out by force.)
Then, from Satyavat's body, Yama forcefully pulled out, bound in a noose and rendered powerless, a soul the size of a thumb. (03-281-16)
ततः समुद्धृतप्राणं गतश्वासं हतप्रभम्। निर्विचेष्टं शरीरं तद्बभूवाप्रियदर्शनम् ॥०३-२८१-१७॥
tataḥ samuddhṛtaprāṇaṃ gataśvāsaṃ hataprabham। nirviceṣṭaṃ śarīraṃ tadbabhūvāpriyadarśanam ॥03-281-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; समुद्धृतप्राणं (samuddhṛtaprāṇam) - with lifted (departed) life; गतश्वासं (gataśvāsaṃ) - with breath gone; हतप्रभम् (hataprabham) - with radiance destroyed; निर्विचेष्टं (nirviceṣṭaṃ) - motionless; शरीरं (śarīraṃ) - body; तद् (tad) - that; बभूव (babhūva) - became; अप्रियदर्शनम् (apriyadarśanam) - unpleasant to behold;]
(Then with lifted (departed) life, with breath gone, with radiance destroyed, motionless, that body became unpleasant to behold.)
Then, after its life had departed, its breath gone, and its radiance destroyed, that body became motionless and unpleasant to look at. (03-281-17)
यमस्तु तं तथा बद्ध्वा प्रयातो दक्षिणामुखः। सावित्री चापि दुःखार्ता यममेवान्वगच्छत ॥ नियमव्रतसंसिद्धा महाभागा पतिव्रता ॥०३-२८१-१८॥
yamastu taṃ tathā baddhvā prayāto dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ। sāvitri cāpi duḥkhārtā yamamevānvagacchata ॥ niyamavratasamsiddhā mahābhāgā pativratā ॥03-281-18॥
[यमस्तु (yamas tu) - Yama indeed; तं (taṃ) - him; तथा (tathā) - thus; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having bound; प्रयातः (prayātaḥ) - departed; दक्षिणामुखः (dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ) - facing south; सावित्री (sāvitri) - Savitri; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दुःखार्ता (duḥkhārtā) - afflicted by sorrow; यमम् (yamam) - Yama; एव (eva) - only; अन्वगच्छत् (anvagacchat) - followed; नियमव्रतसंसिद्धा (niyamavratasamsiddhā) - perfected in the discipline of vows; महाभागा (mahābhāgā) - greatly fortunate; पतिव्रता (pativratā) - devoted to her husband;]
(Yama indeed him thus having bound, departed facing south. Savitri and also afflicted by sorrow, Yama only followed. Perfected in the discipline of vows, greatly fortunate, devoted to her husband.)
Yama, having thus bound him, departed facing south. But Savitri, afflicted with sorrow, followed Yama alone—she, perfected in discipline, greatly fortunate, and devoted to her husband. (03-281-18)

निवर्त गच्छ सावित्रि कुरुष्वास्यौर्ध्वदेहिकम्। कृतं भर्तुस्त्वयानृण्यं यावद्गम्यं गतं त्वया ॥०३-२८१-१९॥
nivarta gaccha sāvitri kuruṣvāsyordhvadehikam। kṛtaṃ bhartustvayānṛṇyaṃ yāvadgamyaṃ gataṃ tvayā ॥03-281-19॥
[निवर्त (nivarta) - turn back; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; सावित्रि (sāvitri) - O Sāvitrī; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - perform; अस्य (asya) - for this (one); ऊर्ध्वदेहिकम् (ūrdhvadehikam) - rites for one whose body has departed; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनृण्यं (anṛṇyam) - freedom from debt; यावत् (yāvat) - so far as; गम्यम् (gamyam) - what can be attained; गतं (gataṃ) - has been attained; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Turn back, go, O Sāvitrī, perform for this one the rites for one whose body has departed. The freedom from debt of the husband has been done by you; as far as what could be attained has been attained by you.)
Turn back and go, O Sāvitrī; perform for him the obsequial rites. You have fulfilled your duty to your husband—what could be accomplished by you has been accomplished. (03-281-19)

yatra me nīyate bhartā svayam vā yatra gacchati। mayāpi tatra gantavyam eṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥03-281-20॥

(Where my husband is led or where he himself goes, by me also there it is to be gone; this duty is eternal.)
Wherever my husband is taken, or wherever he himself goes, I too must go there; this is the eternal duty. (03-281-20)
तपसा गुरुवृत्त्या च भर्तुः स्नेहाद्व्रतेन च। तव चैव प्रसादेन न मे प्रतिहता गतिः ॥०३-२८१-२१॥
tapasā guruvṛttyā ca bhartuḥ snehād vratena ca। tava caiva prasādena na me pratihatā gatiḥ ॥03-281-21॥

(By austerity, by service to elders and by the husband's affection, by observance of vow and by your very favor, not my progress is impeded.)
By austerity, by serving elders, the affection of my husband, the observance of vows, and especially by your favor, my progress is not hindered. (03-281-21)
प्राहुः सप्तपदं मित्रं बुधास्तत्त्वार्थदर्शिनः। मित्रतां च पुरस्कृत्य किञ्चिद्वक्ष्यामि तच्छृणु ॥०३-२८१-२२॥
prāhuḥ saptapadaṁ mitraṁ budhās tattvārthadarśinaḥ। mitratāṁ ca puraskṛtya kiñcid vakṣyāmi tac chṛṇu ॥03-281-22॥
[प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - (they) have said; सप्तपदम् (saptapadam) - seven steps; मित्रम् (mitram) - a friend; बुधाः (budhāḥ) - the wise; तत्त्वार्थदर्शिनः (tattvārthadarśinaḥ) - knowers of the reality of meanings; मित्रताम् (mitratām) - friendship; च (ca) - and; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - having put in front; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will speak; तत् (tat) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen;]
(They have said seven steps (make) a friend, (so say) the wise knowers of the reality of meanings. And having put friendship in front, something I will speak, that listen.)
The wise, who know the true meaning, have declared that seven steps make a friend. Now, giving priority to friendship, I will say something—listen to that. (03-281-22)
नानात्मवन्तस्तु वने चरन्ति; धर्मं च वासं च परिश्रमं च। विज्ञानतो धर्ममुदाहरन्ति; तस्मात्सन्तो धर्ममाहुः प्रधानम् ॥०३-२८१-२३॥
nānātmavantastu vane caranti; dharmaṃ ca vāsaṃ ca pariśramaṃ ca. vijñānato dharmamudāharanti; tasmātsanto dharmamāhuḥ pradhānam ॥03-281-23॥

(But possessed of diverse natures, in the forest they wander; virtue and dwelling and effort. From knowledge they declare virtue; therefore the good men call virtue chief.)
But those of diverse natures wander in the forest; virtue, dwelling, and effort. Because virtue is defined by knowledge, therefore good people declare virtue as supreme. (03-281-23)
एकस्य धर्मेण सतां मतेन; सर्वे स्म तं मार्गमनुप्रपन्नाः। मा वै द्वितीयं मा तृतीयं च वाञ्छे; तस्मात्सन्तो धर्ममाहुः प्रधानम् ॥०३-२८१-२४॥

(By the righteousness of one, by the opinion of the virtuous, all indeed have entered upon that path. Do not, indeed, desire a second or a third (path); therefore, the good say righteousness is chief.)

Cease, I am satisfied by this speech of yours, which is endowed with the proper qualities of vowels, syllables, and consonants. Here, choose a boon, even at the cost of your life—I shall grant you every boon, O blameless one. (03-281-25)

Having fallen from his own kingdom and taken refuge in the forest, my father-in-law, who lost his sight, is in the hermitage. By your grace, may he regain his sight and strength and become a king shining like fire and the sun. (03-281-26)

(I shall give to you, O blameless one, all the boons; as by you spoken, so shall it be. Your travel's fatigue as if I notice. Turn back, go; not to you should fatigue be.)
O blameless one, I shall grant you all the boons; as you have spoken, so shall it be. I seem to notice fatigue from your journey. Turn back, go; you should not suffer any fatigue. (03-281-27)

kutaḥ śramo bhartṛ-samīpato hi me; yato hi bhartā mama sā gatir dhruvā. yataḥ patiṁ neṣyasi tatra me gatiḥ; sureśa bhūyaś ca vaco nibodha me ॥03-281-28॥

(From where fatigue from nearness to husband indeed to me? Because indeed husband my that goal (is) firm. Because husband you will lead there my goal. O lord of the gods, again and word listen my.)
"How can I feel fatigue when near my husband? For, my husband is indeed my steadfast goal. Wherever you lead my husband, my goal is there. O lord of the gods, listen again to my words." (03-281-28)
सतां सकृत्सङ्गतमीप्सितं परं; ततः परं मित्रमिति प्रचक्षते। न चाफलं सत्पुरुषेण सङ्गतं; ततः सतां संनिवसेत्समागमे ॥०३-२८१-२९॥
satāṃ sakṛtsaṅgatam īpsitaṃ paraṃ; tataḥ paraṃ mitram iti pracakṣate. na ca aphalaṃ satpuruṣeṇa saṅgatam; tataḥ satāṃ saṃnivased samāgame ॥03-281-29॥

(Of the good, once association desired, supreme; than that, higher, friend, thus they say. Not and fruitless with a virtuous person association; therefore, of the good, one should reside on meeting.)
Association with the virtuous, even once, is most desirable; they say that more than this, nothing is a greater friend. Association with a virtuous person is never fruitless; therefore, one should dwell with the good when the opportunity arises. (03-281-29)

[मनोनुकूलं (manonukūlam) - agreeable to the mind; बुधबुद्धिवर्धनं (budha-buddhi-vardhanam) - one who increases the wisdom of the wise; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अहम् (aham) - I; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; वचनं (vacanam) - word; हिताश्रयम् (hitāśrayam) - taking refuge in welfare; विना (vinā) - without; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सत्यवतः (satyavataḥ) - of the truthful one; अस्य (asya) - his; जीवितं (jīvitam) - life; वरं (varam) - husband; द्वितीयं (dvitīyam) - second; वरयस्व (varayasva) - choose; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O beautiful (lady);]
(Agreeable to the mind, increases the wisdom of the wise; by you I have been addressed with words taking refuge in welfare. Without again the life of this truthful one (if lost), choose another (second) husband, O beautiful lady.)
You, O beautiful lady, have spoken words that are pleasing and promote wisdom; but if this truthful one's life is lost again, then you should choose another husband.

The kingdom of my wise father-in-law that was formerly taken away; let the king obtain it as his own. And may my elder not abandon his own duty as before; this is the second boon I choose from you. (03-281-31)

(His own indeed kingdom will be obtained soon; and not from own duty will the king deviate. Having been fulfilled (your) desire by me, O king's daughter; return, go, not to you fatigue will be.)
The kingdom will soon be recovered on its own, and the king will not stray from his own duty. Your wish has been fulfilled by me, O princess; return, go, no fatigue shall be yours. (03-281-32)

[प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; इमा (imā) - these; नियमेन (niyamena) - by restraint; संयता (saṃyatā) - controlled; नियम्य (niyamya) - having restrained; च (ca) - and; एताः (etāḥ) - these; नयसे (nayase) - (you) lead; न (na) - not; कामया (kāmayā) - by desire; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; यमत्वं (yamatvaṃ) - the state of (being) Yama; तव (tava) - of you; देव (deva) - O god; विश्रुतं (viśrutam) - well-known; निबोध (nibodha) - know; च (ca) - and; इमाम् (imām) - this; गिरम् (giram) - speech; ईरिताम् (īritām) - spoken; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Creatures by you these by restraint controlled; having restrained these you lead not by desire. Therefore Yama-hood of you O god is well-known; know and this speech spoken by me (03-281-33))
These creatures are controlled by you with restraint; you govern them not by desire. Therefore, O god, your status as Yama is renowned. Now listen to this speech uttered by me. (03-281-33)
अद्रोहः सर्वभूतेषु कर्मणा मनसा गिरा। अनुग्रहश्च दानं च सतां धर्मः सनातनः ॥०३-२८१-३४॥
adrohaḥ sarvabhūteṣu karmaṇā manasā girā। anugrahaś ca dānaṃ ca satāṃ dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥03-281-34॥
[अद्रोहः (adrohaḥ) - non-injury; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - towards all beings; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; गिरा (girā) - by speech; अनुग्रहः (anugrahaḥ) - kindness; च (ca) - and; दानं (dānaṃ) - giving; च (ca) - and; सतां (satāṃ) - of the virtuous; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - law; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(Non-injury towards all beings by action, by mind, by speech; kindness and giving also, are the eternal law of the virtuous.)
Non-injury to all beings through action, mind, and speech, together with kindness and charity, is the eternal law of the virtuous. (03-281-34)
एवम्प्रायश्च लोकोऽयं मनुष्याः शक्तिपेशलाः। सन्तस्त्वेवाप्यमित्रेषु दयां प्राप्तेषु कुर्वते ॥०३-२८१-३५॥
evam-prāyaś-ca loko'yaṁ manuṣyāḥ śakti-peśalāḥ। santas-tvevāpyamitreṣu dayāṁ prāpteṣu kurvate॥03-281-35॥

(Of such disposition and the world, this humans (are) powerful, clever. Good men but indeed even towards enemies, when (they) come (to them), compassion they perform.)
People in this world are generally clever and powerful, but good men, even when dealing with enemies who have come to them, show compassion. (03-281-35)

May you, O auspicious one, be the originator of a splendid lineage and bear a hundred sons for your husband. O daughter of the king, by the wish fulfilled, turn back, for you have come too far along this path. (03-281-38)

विवस्वतस्त्वं तनयः प्रतापवां; स्ततो हि वैवस्वत उच्यसे बुधैः। शमेन धर्मेण च रञ्जिताः प्रजा; स्ततस्तवेहेश्वर धर्मराजता ॥०३-२८१-४०॥

(Of Vivasvat you (are) the son, possessing splendor; therefore indeed, descendant of Vivasvat, you are called by the wise. By tranquility, by righteousness, and delighted (are the) subjects; therefore your here, O lord, kingship of righteousness.)
You are the mighty son of Vivasvat; therefore, the wise call you Vaivasvata. By your tranquility and righteousness your subjects are delighted; thus, O lord, your sovereignty here is that of a king of righteousness. (03-281-40)
आत्मन्यपि न विश्वासस्तावान्भवति सत्सु यः। तस्मात्सत्सु विशेषेण सर्वः प्रणयमिच्छति ॥०३-२८१-४१॥
ātmany api na viśvāsaḥ tāvān bhavati satsu yaḥ। tasmāt satsu viśeṣeṇa sarvaḥ praṇayam icchati॥03-281-41॥

(Even in oneself, such great trust as in good people does not become; therefore, in good people especially, everyone desires affection.)

(From friendship of all beings, trust called arises. Therefore, in good people especially, trust places a person.)

The statement you have uttered, O lady, O auspicious one, is such that I have heard nothing like it except from you. By this I am satisfied. Without sacrificing your life, choose a fourth boon and depart. (03-281-43)

O gentle lady, you will have a hundred sons mighty in strength and valor who will be a source of joy for you. O princess, let your effort cease; turn back, for you have indeed come far along the way. (03-281-45)

(Of the good, always eternal is ethical conduct; good people do not sink nor are they agitated. Of the good, with the virtuous, not fruitless is association; from the virtuous, fear does not follow good people. (03-281-46))
The virtuous always possess an eternal code of conduct; good people do not falter nor do they become distressed. Connections among the virtuous are never fruitless, and good people never have fear arising from the virtuous. (03-281-46)
सन्तो हि सत्येन नयन्ति सूर्यं; सन्तो भूमिं तपसा धारयन्ति। सन्तो गतिर्भूतभव्यस्य राज; न्सतां मध्ये नावसीदन्ति सन्तः ॥०३-२८१-४७॥

(The good ones indeed by truth guide the sun; the good ones with austerity sustain the earth. The good ones are the refuge of what is past and future, O king; among the good, the good ones do not sink.)
The virtuous truly uphold the sun by their truth, and sustain the earth with their austerity. O king, the good are the refuge for the past and the future; in the midst of the virtuous, the righteous never falter. (03-281-47)
आर्यजुष्टमिदं वृत्तमिति विज्ञाय शाश्वतम्। सन्तः परार्थं कुर्वाणा नावेक्षन्ते प्रतिक्रियाम् ॥०३-२८१-४८॥
āryajuṣṭam idaṃ vṛttam iti vijñāya śāśvatam। santaḥ parārthaṃ kurvāṇā na avekṣante pratikriyām ॥03-281-48॥

(In whatever manner you speak words conjoined with dharma, pleasing to the mind, auspicious and endowed with great meaning, in that way my highest devotion (is) towards you; Choose an incomparable boon, O one firm in vow (yatavrate). (03-281-50))
As you speak words in various ways that are connected with dharma, pleasing to the mind, lucid, and full of great meaning, so does my supreme devotion grow for you; therefore, O steadfast one, choose an incomparable boon. (03-281-50)

na te'papargaḥ sukṛtād vinākṛtaḥ; tathā yathānyeṣu vareṣu mānada. varaṃ vṛṇe jīvatu satyavān ayaṃ; yathā mṛtā hi evam ahaṃ vinā patim ॥03-281-51॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; अपवर्गः (apavargaḥ) - release; सुकृतात् (sukṛtāt) - from good deeds; विना (vinā) - without; अकृतः (akṛtaḥ) - not done; तथा (tathā) - so; यथा (yathā) - as; अन्येषु (anyeṣu) - in others; वरेषु (vareṣu) - in boons; मानद (mānada) - O giver of honor; वरम् (varam) - a boon; वृणे (vṛṇe) - I choose; जीवतु (jīvatu) - may live; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavan; अयम् (ayam) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; मृता (mṛtā) - dead; हि (hi) - indeed; एवम् (evam) - thus; अहम् (aham) - I; विना (vinā) - without; पतिम् (patim) - husband;]
(Not for you is liberation without good deeds being done; so as in other boons, O giver of honor. I choose as a boon that this Satyavan may live; as truly I am as if dead without my husband.)
Liberation does not come to you without good deeds being accomplished; even so as in the other boons, O giver of honor. I choose the boon that this Satyavan may live; for truly, I am as dead without my husband. (03-281-51)
न कामये भर्तृविनाकृता सुखं; न कामये भर्तृविनाकृता दिवम्। न कामये भर्तृविनाकृता श्रियं; न भर्तृहीना व्यवसामि जीवितुम् ॥०३-२८१-५२॥
na kāmaye bhartṛ-vinā-kṛtā sukhaṁ; na kāmaye bhartṛ-vinā-kṛtā divam। na kāmaye bhartṛ-vinā-kṛtā śriyaṁ; na bhartṛ-hīnā vyavasāmi jīvitum ॥03-281-52॥

(Not I desire, having been deprived of husband, happiness; not I desire, having been deprived of husband, heaven. Not I desire, having been deprived of husband, prosperity; not, bereft of husband, do I resolve to live.)
I do not desire happiness, nor heaven, nor prosperity if I am separated from my husband; bereft of my husband, I am not resolved to live. (03-281-52)
वरातिसर्गः शतपुत्रता मम; त्वयैव दत्तो ह्रियते च मे पतिः। वरं वृणे जीवतु सत्यवानयं; तवैव सत्यं वचनं भविष्यति ॥०३-२८१-५३॥

(After the granting of the boon, hundred-son-hood to me; by you alone my husband who was given is taken away. Boon I choose: may Satyavan this live; of you alone truth word will be.)
After granting me the boon of a hundred sons, you alone take away my husband who was given. I choose this boon: let Satyavan live; your word alone will become true. (03-281-53)

tathety uktvā tu tān pāśān muktvā vaivasvato yamaḥ। dharmarājaḥ prahṛṣṭātmā sāvitrym idam abravīt॥03-281-54॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; तान् (tān) - those; पाशान् (pāśān) - nooses; मुक्त्वा (muktvā) - having released; वैवस्वतः (vaivasvataḥ) - son of Vivasvat (epithet of Yama); यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - king of righteousness; प्रहृष्टात्मा (prahṛṣṭātmā) - with delighted mind; सावित्रीम् (sāvitrīm) - Savitri (her name, accusative); इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Thus having spoken, but those nooses having released, Vaivasvata Yama, king of righteousness, with delighted mind, to Savitri this said.)
Having thus spoken and released those nooses, Yama, the son of Vivasvat and king of righteousness, with a delighted mind, spoke this to Savitri. (03-281-54)
एष भद्रे मया मुक्तो भर्ता ते कुलनन्दिनि। अरोगस्तव नेयश्च सिद्धार्थश्च भविष्यति ॥०३-२८१-५५॥
eṣa bhadre mayā mukto bhartā te kulanandini। arogas tava neyaś ca siddhārthaś ca bhaviṣyati ॥03-281-55॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious lady; मया (mayā) - by me; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - released; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; ते (te) - your; कुलनन्दिनि (kulanandini) - O delighter of the family; अरोगः (arogaḥ) - free from disease; तव (tava) - your; नेयः (neyaḥ) - to be led (to you); च (ca) - and; सिद्धार्थः (siddhārthaḥ) - successful; च (ca) - and; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become;]
(This, O auspicious lady, by me released husband your, O delighter of the family, free from disease, to you will be led, and successful and will become.)
This husband of yours, O auspicious lady, O delighter of the family, whom I have released, will be free from disease, will be brought to you, and will become successful. (03-281-55)
चतुर्वर्षशतं चायुस्त्वया सार्धमवाप्स्यति। इष्ट्वा यज्ञैश्च धर्मेण ख्यातिं लोके गमिष्यति ॥०३-२८१-५६॥
caturvarṣaśataṃ cāyus tvayā sārdham avāpsyati. iṣṭvā yajñaiś ca dharmeṇa khyātiṃ loke gamiṣyati॥03-281-56॥
[चतुर्-वर्ष-शतं (catur-varṣa-śatam) - four hundred years; च (ca) - and; आयुः (āyuḥ) - lifespan; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; अवाप्स्यति (avāpsyati) - he will attain; इष्ट्वा (iṣṭvā) - having worshipped; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; च (ca) - and; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; ख्यातिम् (khyātiṃ) - renown; लोके (loke) - in the world; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - he will attain;]
(Four hundred years and lifespan with you together he will attain. Having worshipped by sacrifices and by righteousness, renown in the world he will attain.)
He will attain a lifespan of four hundred years together with you, and having performed sacrifices and acted righteously, he will achieve renown in the world. (03-281-56)
त्वयि पुत्रशतं चैव सत्यवाञ्जनयिष्यति। ते चापि सर्वे राजानः क्षत्रियाः पुत्रपौत्रिणः ॥ ख्यातास्त्वन्नामधेयाश्च भविष्यन्तीह शाश्वताः ॥०३-२८१-५७॥
tvayi putraśataṃ caiva satyavāñ janayiṣyati। te cāpi sarve rājānaḥ kṣatriyāḥ putrapautriṇaḥ ॥ khyātās tvannāmadheyāś ca bhaviṣyantīha śāśvatāḥ ॥03-281-57॥

(In you, indeed, Satyavan will beget a hundred sons; they also all kings, kṣatriyas, having sons and grandsons, famous, of your name, and will be here eternal.)
A hundred sons will be born to you by Satyavan; all of them will be kṣatriya kings with sons and grandsons, famous and bearing your name, and they will remain here eternally. (03-281-57)
पितुश्च ते पुत्रशतं भविता तव मातरि। मालव्यां मालवा नाम शाश्वताः पुत्रपौत्रिणः ॥ भ्रातरस्ते भविष्यन्ति क्षत्रियास्त्रिदशोपमाः ॥०३-२८१-५८॥
pituś ca te putraśataṁ bhavitā tava mātari। mālavyāṁ mālavā nāma śāśvatāḥ putrapautriṇaḥ ॥ bhrātaras te bhaviṣyanti kṣatriyās tridaśopamāḥ ॥03-281-58॥
[पितुः (pituḥ) - of your father; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - for you; पुत्रशतं (putraśatam) - a hundred sons; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; तव (tava) - for you; मातरि (mātari) - in your mother; मालव्याम् (mālavyām) - in Mālavī; मालवा (mālavā) - the Mālavas; नाम (nāma) - named; शाश्वताः (śāśvatāḥ) - perpetual; पुत्रपौत्रिणः (putrapautriṇaḥ) - having sons and grandsons; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; ते (te) - your; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kṣatriyas; त्रिदशोपमाः (tridaśopamāḥ) - like the gods;]
(And of your father, for you, a hundred sons will be; for you, in your mother, in Mālavī, the Mālavas named, perpetual, having sons and grandsons. Brothers your will become, Kṣatriyas, like the gods.)
A hundred sons will be born to your father for you; in your mother Mālavī, the perpetual Mālavas named, who will have sons and grandsons. Your brothers will become Kṣatriyas, resembling the gods. (03-281-58)
एवं तस्यै वरं दत्त्वा धर्मराजः प्रतापवान्। निवर्तयित्वा सावित्रीं स्वमेव भवनं ययौ ॥०३-२८१-५९॥
evaṁ tasyai varaṁ dattvā dharmarājaḥ pratāpavān। nivartayitvā sāvitrīṁ svam-eva bhavanaṁ yayau॥03-281-59॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; तस्यै (tasyai) - to her; वरं (varaṁ) - a boon; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharma-rāja; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - the mighty; निवर्तयित्वा (nivartayitvā) - having caused to return; सावित्रीं (sāvitrīṁ) - Sāvitrī; स्वम् (svam) - his own; एव (eva) - indeed; भवनं (bhavanaṁ) - abode; ययौ (yayau) - he went;]
(Thus to her a boon having given, Dharma-rāja the mighty, having caused Sāvitrī to return, to his own indeed abode he went.)
Thus, having granted her a boon, the mighty Dharma-rāja, after causing Sāvitrī to return, went to his own abode. (03-281-59)
सावित्र्यपि यमे याते भर्तारं प्रतिलभ्य च। जगाम तत्र यत्रास्या भर्तुः शावं कलेवरम् ॥०३-२८१-६०॥
sāvitry api yame yāte bhartāraṃ pratilabhya ca। jagāma tatra yatrāsyā bhartuḥ śāvaṃ kalevaram ॥03-281-60॥
[सावित्र्यपि (sāvitry api) - Sāvitrī also; यमे (yame) - Yama (the god of death); याते (yāte) - having gone; भर्तारं (bhartāram) - her husband; प्रतिलभ्य (pratilabhya) - having regained; च (ca) - and; जगाम (jagāma) - she went; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्र (yatra) - where; अस्या (asyāḥ) - her; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of (her) husband; शावं (śāvam) - dead (body); कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - corpse;]
(Sāvitrī also, Yama having gone, her husband having regained and, went there where her husband’s dead body (corpse) (was).)
After Yama had departed and Sāvitrī had regained her husband, she also went to the place where her husband's corpse lay. (03-281-60)
सा भूमौ प्रेक्ष्य भर्तारमुपसृत्योपगूह्य च। उत्सङ्गे शिर आरोप्य भूमावुपविवेश ह ॥०३-२८१-६१॥
sā bhūmau prekṣya bhartāram upasṛtya upagūhya ca | utsaṅge śira āropya bhūmā upaviveśa ha ॥03-281-61॥
[सा (sā) - she; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - her husband; उपसृत्य (upasṛtya) - approaching; उपगूह्य (upagūhya) - embracing; च (ca) - and; उत्सङ्गे (utsaṅge) - on (her) lap; शिर (śira) - head; आरोप्य (āropya) - placing; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; उपविवेश (upaviveśa) - sat down; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(She, on the ground, having seen her husband, approaching, embracing and placing (his) head on (her) lap, on the ground indeed sat down.)
She saw her husband lying on the ground, approached and embraced him, placed his head on her lap and sat down on the earth. (03-281-61)
सञ्ज्ञां च सत्यवाँल्लब्ध्वा सावित्रीमभ्यभाषत। प्रोष्यागत इव प्रेम्णा पुनः पुनरुदीक्ष्य वै ॥०३-२८१-६२॥
sañjñāṃ ca satyavān labdhvā sāvitrīm abhyabhāṣata। proṣyāgata iva premṇā punaḥ punar udīkṣya vai ॥03-281-62॥

(And having regained consciousness, Satyavan addressed Savitri; as if one returned from a journey, with affection, again and again having looked (at her), indeed.)
Satyavan, having regained consciousness, addressed Savitri; like one who returns from a journey, he looked at her again and again with affection, and spoke. (03-281-62)

[सुचिरम् (suciram) - for a long time; बतः (bata) - indeed; सुप्तः (suptaḥ) - slept; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; न (na) - not; अवबोधितः (avabodhitaḥ) - woken (up); क्व (kva) - where; च (ca) - and; असौ (asau) - that; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; श्यामः (śyāmaḥ) - dark-complexioned; यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - that; माम् (mām) - me; सञ्चकर्ष (sañcakarṣa) - dragged; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(For a long time indeed I have slept; for what reason was (I) not awakened? Where is that man, that dark one, who dragged me (away), indeed?)
Indeed, I have slept for a long time; for what reason was I not awakened? Where is that dark-complexioned man who dragged me away? (03-281-63)

(For a long time indeed, you are asleep in my lap, bull among men. He, the venerable god, Yama, restrainer of beings, has gone.)
You have indeed slept a long while in my lap, O best of men. The venerable god Yama, lord restraining all beings, has departed. (03-281-64)
विश्रान्तोऽसि महाभाग विनिद्रश्च नृपात्मज। यदि शक्यं समुत्तिष्ठ विगाढां पश्य शर्वरीम् ॥०३-२८१-६५॥
viśrānto'si mahābhāga vinidraś ca nṛpātmaja। yadi śakyaṃ samuttiṣṭha vigāḍhāṃ paśya śarvarīm॥03-281-65॥
[विश्रान्तः (viśrāntaḥ) - rested; असि (asi) - you are; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate; विनिद्रः (vinidraḥ) - sleepless; च (ca) - and; नृपात्मज (nṛpātmaja) - O prince; यदि (yadi) - if; शक्यं (śakyam) - possible; समुत्तिष्ठ (samuttiṣṭha) - arise; विगाढाम् (vigāḍhām) - deep; पश्य (paśya) - see; शर्वरीम् (śarvarīm) - night;]
(You are rested, O greatly fortunate (one), and sleepless, O prince; if (it is) possible, arise, see the deep night.)
You are now rested, O greatly fortunate prince, and yet sleepless; if you are able, arise and behold how deep the night is. (03-281-65)

[उपलभ्य (upalabhya) - having attained; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सञ्ज्ञां (sañjñām) - consciousness; सुखसुप्त (sukha-supta) - comfortably sleeping; इव (iva) - like; उत्थितः (utthitaḥ) - awakened; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; वनान्तान् (vanāntān) - edges of the forest; च (ca) - and; निरीक्ष्य (nirīkṣya) - having looked at; उवाच (uvāca) - said; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavan;]
(Having regained then consciousness, like one who has awakened from pleasant sleep, having looked at all the directions and the edges of the forest, Satyavan said.)
Then, regaining consciousness as if awoken from a comfortable sleep, and gazing at all the directions and the edges of the forest, Satyavan spoke. (03-281-66)
फलाहारोऽस्मि निष्क्रान्तस्त्वया सह सुमध्यमे। ततः पाटयतः काष्ठं शिरसो मे रुजाभवत् ॥०३-२८१-६७॥
phalāhāro'smi niṣkrāntastvayā saha sumadhyame। tataḥ pāṭayataḥ kāṣṭhaṃ śiraso me rujābhavat॥03-281-67॥

त्वयोपगूढस्य च मे निद्रयापहृतं मनः। ततोऽपश्यं तमो घोरं पुरुषं च महौजसम् ॥०३-२८१-६९॥
tvayopagūḍhasya ca me nidrayāpahṛtaṃ manaḥ। tato'paśyaṃ tamo ghoraṃ puruṣaṃ ca mahaujasaṃ॥03-281-69॥

तद्यदि त्वं विजानासि किं तद्ब्रूहि सुमध्यमे। स्वप्नो मे यदि वा दृष्टो यदि वा सत्यमेव तत् ॥०३-२८१-७०॥
tadyadi tvaṃ vijānāsi kiṃ tadbrūhi sumadhyame. svapno me yadi vā dṛṣṭo yadi vā satyameva tat ॥03-281-70॥

(That if you know, what that, tell (me), O slender-waisted one. Dream my if or was seen, if or true indeed that.)
If you know that, O slender-waisted one, then tell me what it is. Was what I saw a dream, or is it actually true? (03-281-70)
तमुवाचाथ सावित्री रजनी व्यवगाहते। श्वस्ते सर्वं यथावृत्तमाख्यास्यामि नृपात्मज ॥०३-२८१-७१॥
tam uvācātha sāvitri rajanī vyavagāhate। śvas te sarvaṃ yathāvṛttam ākhyāsyāmi nṛpātmaja ॥03-281-71॥

Then Sāvitrī said to him, as night was falling, "Tomorrow, O prince, I will tell you everything as it has happened." (03-281-71)
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भद्रं ते पितरौ पश्य सुव्रत। विगाढा रजनी चेयं निवृत्तश्च दिवाकरः ॥०३-२८१-७२॥
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha bhadraṃ te pitarau paśya suvrata। vigāḍhā rajanī ceyaṃ nivṛttaśca divākaraḥ ॥03-281-72॥

नक्तञ्चराश्चरन्त्येते हृष्टाः क्रूराभिभाषिणः। श्रूयन्ते पर्णशब्दाश्च मृगाणां चरतां वने ॥०३-२८१-७३॥
naktañcarāś caranty ete hṛṣṭāḥ krūrābhibhāṣiṇaḥ। śrūyante parṇaśabdāś ca mṛgāṇāṃ caratāṃ vane॥03-281-73॥

ततोऽग्निमानयित्वेह ज्वालयिष्यामि सर्वतः। काष्ठानीमानि सन्तीह जहि सन्तापमात्मनः ॥०३-२८१-७७॥
tato'gnim ānayitva iha jvālayiṣyāmi sarvataḥ। kāṣṭhāni imāni santi iha jahi santāpam ātmanāḥ॥03-281-77॥

(If not you endeavor to go with pain, you I desire. And not you will know the path, (being) covered by darkness in the forest.)

श्वः प्रभाते वने दृश्ये यास्यावोऽनुमते तव। वसावेह क्षपामेतां रुचितं यदि तेऽनघ ॥०३-२८१-७९॥

न कदाचिद्विकाले हि गतपूर्वो मयाश्रमः। अनागतायां सन्ध्यायां माता मे प्ररुणद्धि माम् ॥०३-२८१-८१॥
na kadācid vikāle hi gatapūrvo mayāśramaḥ। anāgatāyāṃ sandhyāyāṃ mātā me praruṇaddhi mām ॥03-281-81॥

(Not ever at an improper time indeed gone previously by me the hermitage. With sandhyā not yet arrived, mother my prevents me.)
I have never before gone to the hermitage at an improper time; when the twilight has not yet come, my mother restrains me. (03-281-81)
दिवापि मयि निष्क्रान्ते सन्तप्येते गुरू मम। विचिनोति च मां तातः सहैवाश्रमवासिभिः ॥०३-२८१-८२॥
divāpi mayi niṣkrānte santapyete gurū mama. vicinoti ca māṁ tātaḥ sahaivāśramavāsibhiḥ ॥03-281-82॥

मात्रा पित्रा च सुभृशं दुःखिताभ्यामहं पुरा। उपालब्धः सुबहुशश्चिरेणागच्छसीति ह ॥०३-२८१-८३॥
mātrā pitrā ca subhṛśaṃ duḥkhitābhyāmahaṃ purā। upālabdhaḥ subahuśaścireṇāgacchasīti ha ॥03-281-83॥

(By (my) mother, by (my) father, and exceedingly, by both distressed, I, formerly, reproached, many times, 'after a long time you come,' thus, indeed.)
Formerly, I was repeatedly reproached by my mother and father, who were greatly distressed, saying, 'After such a long time, you have come,' indeed. (03-281-83)
का त्ववस्था तयोरद्य मदर्थमिति चिन्तये। तयोरदृश्ये मयि च महद्दुःखं भविष्यति ॥०३-२८१-८४॥
kā tv avasthā tayor adya madartham iti cintaye। tayor adṛśye mayi ca mahad duḥkhaṃ bhaviṣyati॥03-281-84॥

(What indeed the state of them two today for my sake thus I think. Of them two when not seen in me and great sorrow will be.)
I am thinking, 'What indeed is their state today for my sake?' If I do not see them, great sorrow will arise in me. (03-281-84)
पुरा मामूचतुश्चैव रात्रावस्रायमाणकौ। भृशं सुदुःखितौ वृद्धौ बहुशः प्रीतिसंयुतौ ॥०३-२८१-८५॥
purā mām ūcatuś caiva rātrau asrāyamāṇakau | bhṛśaṃ suduḥkhitau vṛddhau bahuśaḥ prīti-saṃyutau ॥03-281-85॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; माम् (mām) - me; ऊचतुश् (ūcatuḥ) - they both said; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; अस्रायमाणकौ (asrāyamāṇakau) - shedding tears (both); भृशम् (bhṛśam) - intensely; सुदुःखितौ (suduḥkhitau) - very afflicted; वृद्धौ (vṛddhau) - old (both); बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - often; प्रीतिसंयुतौ (prīti-saṃyutau) - endowed with affection (both);]
(Formerly, me they both indeed said at night, shedding tears, intensely very afflicted, old (both), often endowed with affection.)
Long ago, the two elderly ones, often afflicted and frequently united in affection, used to speak to me at night, shedding many tears. (3-281-85)
त्वया हीनौ न जीवाव मुहूर्तमपि पुत्रक। यावद्धरिष्यसे पुत्र तावन्नौ जीवितं ध्रुवम् ॥०३-२८१-८६॥
tvayā hīnau na jīvāva muhūrtam api putraka। yāvat dhariṣyase putra tāvat nau jīvitaṁ dhruvam॥ 03-281-86॥

वृद्धयोरन्धयोर्यष्टिस्त्वयि वंशः प्रतिष्ठितः। त्वयि पिण्डश्च कीर्तिश्च सन्तानं चावयोरिति ॥०३-२८१-८७॥

(Of the two aged, of the two blind, the stick is on you; the staff is established on you. On you, the rice-ball and renown and offspring, and of us two, thus.)
You are the support for the two aged and the two blind; the staff rests on you. On you depend the rice-offering, our renown, our offspring, and us both—thus. (03-281-87)
माता वृद्धा पिता वृद्धस्तयोर्यष्टिरहं किल। तौ रात्रौ मामपश्यन्तौ कामवस्थां गमिष्यतः ॥०३-२८१-८८॥
mātā vṛddhā pitā vṛddhas tayor yaṣṭir ahaṃ kila। tau rātrau mām apaśyantau kāmavasthāṃ gamiṣyataḥ ॥03-281-88॥
[माता (mātā) - mother; वृद्धा (vṛddhā) - aged; पिता (pitā) - father; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - aged; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; यष्टिः (yaṣṭiḥ) - staff; अहम् (aham) - I; किल (kila) - indeed; तौ (tau) - those two; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; माम् (mām) - me; अपश्यन्तौ (apaśyantau) - not seeing; कामवस्थाम् (kāmavasthām) - state of desire; गमिष्यतः (gamiṣyataḥ) - will go;]
(Mother aged, father aged, of those two staff I indeed. Those two at night not seeing me, the state of desire will go.)
My mother is aged, my father is aged; I am indeed the staff for those two. During the night, those two, not seeing me, will fall into a state of longing. (03-281-88)
निद्रायाश्चाभ्यसूयामि यस्या हेतोः पिता मम। माता च संशयं प्राप्ता मत्कृतेऽनपकारिणी ॥०३-२८१-८९॥
nidrāyāś cābhyasūyāmi yasyā hetoḥ pitā mama। mātā ca saṁśayaṁ prāptā matkṛte'napakāriṇī॥03-281-89॥
[निद्रायाः (nidrāyāḥ) - of sleep; च (ca) - and; अभ्यसूयामि (abhyasūyāmi) - I am envious; यस्या (yasyā) - by whose; हेतोः (hetoḥ) - reason; पिता (pitā) - father; मम (mama) - my; माता (mātā) - mother; च (ca) - and; संशयम् (saṁśayam) - doubt; प्राप्ता (prāptā) - has attained; मत्कृते (matkṛte) - for my sake; अनपकारिणी (anapakāriṇī) - not having done wrong;]
(Of sleep and I am envious. By whose reason, my father, and mother has attained doubt for my sake, not having done wrong.)
I am even envious of sleep, because of which my father and mother, who have done no wrong on my account, are now in doubt. (03-281-89)
अहं च संशयं प्राप्तः कृच्छ्रामापदमास्थितः। मातापितृभ्यां हि विना नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥०३-२८१-९०॥
ahaṃ ca saṃśayaṃ prāptaḥ kṛcchrām-āpadam-āsthitaḥ। mātā-pitṛbhyāṃ hi vinā nāhaṃ jīvitum-utsahē ॥03-281-90॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; च (ca) - and; संशयं (saṃśayam) - doubt; uncertainty; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - have attained; कृच्छ्राम् (kṛcchrām) - severe; difficult; आपदम् (āpadam) - calamity; danger; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - abiding in; being situated in; मातापितृभ्यां (mātā-pitṛbhyām) - from mother and father; (ablative dual); हि (hi) - indeed; for; विना (vinā) - without; न (na) - not; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; उत्सहे (utsahē) - am able; endeavor;]
(I and doubt have attained, severe calamity abiding; from mother and father indeed without, not I to live am able.)
I too have come into doubt and am faced with severe calamity; indeed, without my mother and father, I am not able to live. (03-281-90)
व्यक्तमाकुलया बुद्ध्या प्रज्ञाचक्षुः पिता मम। एकैकमस्यां वेलायां पृच्छत्याश्रमवासिनम् ॥०३-२८१-९१॥
vyaktamākulayā buddhyā prajñācakṣuḥ pitā mama। ekaikamasyāṃ velāyāṃ pṛcchatyāśramavāsinam ॥03-281-91॥
[व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - clearly; distinctly; आकुलया (ākulayā) - troubled; agitated; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - with intelligence; with mind; प्रज्ञाचक्षुः (prajñācakṣuḥ) - one whose eye is wisdom; wise; पिता (pitā) - father; मम (mama) - my; एकैकम् (ekaikam) - each one; every single; अस्याम् (asyām) - at this (time); in this; वेलायाम् (velāyām) - at the time; in the period; पृच्छति (pṛcchati) - asks; inquires; आश्रमवासिनम् (āśramavāsinam) - the resident of the hermitage;]
(Clearly with troubled intelligence, the wisdom-eyed my father each one at this time asks the hermitage-dweller.)
With a mind clearly agitated, my wise father is now asking each resident of the hermitage. (03-281-91)
नात्मानमनुशोचामि यथाहं पितरं शुभे। भर्तारं चाप्यनुगतां मातरं परिदुर्बलाम् ॥०३-२८१-९२॥
nātmānam anuśocāmi yathāhaṁ pitaraṁ śubhe। bhartāraṁ cāpy anugatāṁ mātaraṁ paridurbalām ॥03-281-92॥
[न (na) - not; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; अनुशोचामि (anuśocāmi) - I grieve for; यथा (yathā) - as; in the way; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; पितरं (pitaraṁ) - father; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; भर्तारं (bhartāram) - husband; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनुगताम् (anugatām) - who has followed (him); मातरं (mātaraṁ) - mother; परिदुर्बलाम् (paridurbalām) - utterly weak;]
(I do not grieve for myself as (much as) I (do) for my father, O auspicious one; (also) the husband and the mother who has followed (him), utterly weak.)
O auspicious one, I do not grieve for myself as much as I do for my father, for my husband, and for my completely helpless mother who has followed him. (03-281-92)
मत्कृतेन हि तावद्य सन्तापं परमेष्यतः। जीवन्तावनुजीवामि भर्तव्यौ तौ मयेति ह ॥ तयोः प्रियं मे कर्तव्यमिति जीवामि चाप्यहम् ॥०३-२८१-९३॥
matkṛtena hi tāvadya santāpaṃ parameṣyataḥ। jīvantāvanujīvāmi bhartavyau tau mayeti ha ॥ tayoḥ priyaṃ me kartavyamiti jīvāmi cāpyaham ॥03-281-93॥
[मत्कृतेन (matkṛtena) - by what is done for me; हि (hi) - indeed; तावद् (tāvad) - so long; य (ya) - who; सन्तापं (santāpam) - suffering; परम् (param) - great; एष्यतः (eṣyataḥ) - will attain (dual); जीवन्तौ (jīvantau) - both living; अनुजीवामि (anujīvāmi) - I live after; भर्तव्यौ (bhartavyau) - ought to be protected (dual); तौ (tau) - those two; मय (maya) - by me; इति (iti) - thus; ह (ha) - indeed; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear thing; मे (me) - for me; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - ought to be done; इति (iti) - thus; जीवामि (jīvāmi) - I live; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(By what is done for me indeed, so long as those two will attain great suffering, I live after them as long as they live, since those two ought to be protected by me, indeed. Of those two, what is dear to me ought to be done — thus I also live.)
Because, by what has been done for me, as long as those two are about to experience great suffering, I keep living while they live—because those two must be supported by me. I live on also with the resolve that I must do what is dear to them. (03-281-93)
मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

एवमुक्त्वा स धर्मात्मा गुरुवर्ती गुरुप्रियः। उच्छ्रित्य बाहू दुःखार्तः सस्वरं प्ररुरोद ह ॥०३-२८१-९४॥
evam-uktvā sa dharmātmā guru-vartī guru-priyaḥ। ucchritya bāhū duḥkhārtaḥ sasvaraṃ praruroda ha ॥03-281-94॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; स (sa) - he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; गुरुवर्ती (guru-vartī) - obedient to the teacher; गुरुप्रियः (guru-priyaḥ) - dear to the teacher; उच्छ्रित्य (ucchritya) - having raised; बाहू (bāhū) - arms; दुःखार्तः (duḥkhārtaḥ) - afflicted by sorrow; सस्वरम् (sasvaram) - aloud; प्ररुरोद (praruroda) - cried; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Thus having said, he, the righteous-souled, obedient to the teacher, dear to the teacher, having raised (his) arms, afflicted by sorrow, aloud, cried indeed.)
Having spoken thus, he, the righteous and devoted disciple, beloved of his teacher, raised his arms and, overwhelmed with sorrow, wept aloud. (03-281-94)
ततोऽब्रवीत्तथा दृष्ट्वा भर्तारं शोककर्शितम्। प्रमृज्याश्रूणि नेत्राभ्यां सावित्री धर्मचारिणी ॥०३-२८१-९५॥
tato'bravīttathā dṛṣṭvā bhartāraṃ śokakarśitam. pramṛjyāśrūṇi netrābhyāṃ sāvitri dharmacāriṇī ॥03-281-95॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; तथा (tathā) - thus; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; शोककर्शितम् (śokakarśitam) - worn by grief; प्रमृज्य (pramṛjya) - having wiped; अश्रूणि (aśrūṇi) - tears; नेत्राभ्याम् (netrābhyām) - with (her) eyes; सावित्री (sāvitrī) - Sāvitrī; धर्मचारिणी (dharmacāriṇī) - practicing righteousness;]
(Then spoke thus, having seen her husband worn by grief, having wiped the tears with (her) eyes, Sāvitrī practicing righteousness.)
Then Sāvitrī, devoted to righteousness, having wiped the tears from her eyes, spoke thus after seeing her husband worn with grief. (03-281-95)
यदि मेऽस्ति तपस्तप्तं यदि दत्तं हुतं यदि। श्वश्रूश्वशुरभर्तॄणां मम पुण्यास्तु शर्वरी ॥०३-२८१-९६॥
yadi me'sti tapastaptaṃ yadi dattaṃ hutaṃ yadi। śvaśrūśvaśurabhartṝṇāṃ mama puṇyāstu śarvarī ॥03-281-96॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; मे (me) - my; अस्ति (asti) - there is; तपः (tapaḥ) - asceticism; तप्तं (taptaṃ) - performed; यदि (yadi) - if; दत्तं (dattaṃ) - given; हुतं (hutaṃ) - offered (in fire); यदि (yadi) - if; श्वश्रू (śvaśrū) - mother-in-law; श्वशुर (śvaśura) - father-in-law; भर्तॄणां (bhartṝṇāṃ) - of husbands; मम (mama) - my; पुण्याः (puṇyāḥ) - merits; अस्तु (astu) - may be; शर्वरी (śarvarī) - night;]
(If my asceticism has been performed, if gifts have been given, if offerings have been made, may my merits be for the night of my mother-in-law, father-in-law, and husbands.)
If I have performed austerities, if I have given gifts and made offerings, may the merits I have gained benefit my mother-in-law, father-in-law, and husbands through this night. (03-281-96)
न स्मराम्युक्तपूर्वां वै स्वैरेष्वप्यनृतां गिरम्। तेन सत्येन तावद्य ध्रियेतां श्वशुरौ मम ॥०३-२८१-९७॥
na smarāmy ukta-pūrvāṃ vai svaireṣv apy anṛtāṃ giram| tena satyena tāvad dhi dhriyetāṃ śvaśurau mama॥03-281-97॥

(Not do I remember ever having uttered a false word, even among my own (husbands/friends). By that truth, so long as indeed, may my father-in-law and mother-in-law be protected.)

kāmaye darśanaṃ pitroryāhi sāvitri māciram। purā mātuḥ piturvāpi yadi paśyāmi vipriyam ॥ na jīviṣye varārohe satyenātmānam ālabhe ॥03-281-98॥

I desire to see my parents; go, Sāvitrī, do not delay. Before I witness anything unfortunate happening to my mother or father, I will not survive, O beautiful one; by the truth, I take refuge in myself. (03-281-98)
यदि धर्मे च ते बुद्धिर्मां चेज्जीवन्तमिच्छसि। मम प्रियं वा कर्तव्यं गच्छस्वाश्रममन्तिकात् ॥०३-२८१-९९॥
yadi dharme ca te buddhir māṁ ca ej jīvantam icchasi. mama priyaṁ vā kartavyaṁ gacchasvāśramam antikāt ॥03-281-99॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - resolve; मां (mām) - me; चेत् (cet) - if; जीवन्तम् (jīvantam) - alive; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; मम (mama) - my; प्रियं (priyam) - beloved; वा (vā) - or; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - that which is to be done; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; स्व (sva) - your own; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - from the proximity;]
(If in righteousness and your resolve, me if alive you desire, my beloved or that which is to be done, go from the proximity of your own hermitage.)
If in righteousness your mind is firm and you wish me to live, or you wish to do what is dear to me, then go from the vicinity of your own hermitage. (03-281-99)

sāvitrī tat utthāya keśān saṃyamya bhāminī। patim utthāpayām āsa bāhubhyāṃ parigṛhya vai॥03-281-100॥

(Sāvitrī then having risen, having bound her hair, the radiant lady, her husband she caused to rise, with both arms having embraced indeed.)
At that moment, Sāvitrī, the radiant lady, rose up, tied her hair, and with both arms, embraced and raised her husband.
उत्थाय सत्यवांश्चापि प्रमृज्याङ्गानि पाणिना। दिशः सर्वाः समालोक्य कठिने दृष्टिमादधे ॥०३-२८१-१०१॥
utthāya satyavāṃś cāpi pramṛjyāṅgāni pāṇinā। diśaḥ sarvāḥ samālokya kaṭhine dṛṣṭim ādadhe॥03-281-101॥
[उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen;, सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavān; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रमृज्य (pramṛjya) - having wiped; अङ्गानि (aṅgāni) - limbs; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with [his] hand; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; समालोक्य (samālokya) - having looked well at; कठिने (kaṭhine) - firm; दृष्टिम् (dṛṣṭim) - gaze; आदधे (ādadhe) - fixed;]
(Having risen, Satyavān also, having wiped his limbs with his hand, having looked well at all the directions, fixed a firm gaze.)
Satyavān rose up, wiped his limbs with his hand, gazed carefully in all directions, and fixed his gaze firmly. (03-281-101)
तमुवाचाथ सावित्री श्वः फलानीह नेष्यसि। योगक्षेमार्थमेतत्ते नेष्यामि परशुं त्वहम् ॥०३-२८१-१०२॥
tam uvāca atha sāvitri śvaḥ phalāni iha neṣyasi। yoga-kṣema-artham etat te neṣyāmi paraśuṃ tv aham॥03-281-102॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; अथ (atha) - then; सावित्री (sāvitri) - Savitri (proper noun, feminine); श्वः (śvaḥ) - tomorrow; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; इह (iha) - here; नेष्यसि (neṣyasi) - you will bring; योगक्षेमार्थम् (yoga-kṣema-artham) - for the sake of acquisition and preservation; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - for you; नेष्यामि (neṣyāmi) - I will take; परशुम् (paraśum) - axe; त्व (tv) - your; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(To him said then Savitri: Tomorrow fruits here you will bring. For acquisition and preservation, this for you I will take your axe.)
Then Savitri said to him: 'Tomorrow, you will bring fruits here. For your acquisition and preservation, I will take this axe for you.' (03-281-102)
कृत्वा कठिनभारं सा वृक्षशाखावलम्बिनम्। गृहीत्वा परशुं भर्तुः सकाशं पुनरागमत् ॥०३-२८१-१०३॥
kṛtvā kaṭhinabhāraṃ sā vṛkṣaśākhāvalambinam। gṛhītvā paraśuṃ bhartuḥ sakāśaṃ punarāgamat ॥03-281-103॥
[कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; having made; कठिनभारं (kaṭhinabhāram) - hard weight; सा (sā) - she; वृक्षशाखा-वलम्बिनम् (vṛkṣaśākhā-valambinam) - hanging on the tree’s branch; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; having seized; परशुं (paraśum) - axe; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of her husband; सकाशं (sakāśam) - to the presence (of); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आगमत् (āgamat) - (she) came;]
(Having made the hard weight to hang on the tree’s branch, she, having taken the axe, came again to the presence of her husband.)
After tying the heavy burden to the tree’s branch, she took the axe and returned again to her husband. (03-281-103)
वामे स्कन्धे तु वामोरूर्भर्तुर्बाहुं निवेश्य सा। दक्षिणेन परिष्वज्य जगाम मृदुगामिनी ॥०३-२८१-१०४॥
vāme skandhe tu vāmorūrbharturbāhuṃ niveśya sā। dakṣiṇena pariṣvajya jagāma mṛdugāminī ॥03-281-104॥
[वामे (vāme) - on the left; side; स्कन्धे (skandhe) - shoulder; तु (tu) - but; वामोरू (vāmorū) - her left thigh; र्भर्तुर्बाहुं (bhartur bāhuṃ) - her husband's arm; निवेश्य (niveśya) - having placed; सा (sā) - she; दक्षिणेन (dakṣiṇena) - with the right (arm); परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; जगाम (jagāma) - she went; मृदुगामिनी (mṛdugāminī) - gentle-gaited (woman);]
(On the left shoulder but, her left thigh, her husband's arm having placed she, with the right (arm) having embraced, she went, the gentle-gaited (woman).)
She, the gentle-gaited woman, placing her husband's arm on her left shoulder and thigh, and embracing him with her right arm, went along. (03-281-104)

abhyāsagamanādbhīru panthāno viditā mama। vṛkṣāntarālokitayā jyotsnayā cāpi lakṣaye ॥03-281-105॥
[अभ्यासगमनात् (abhyāsagamanāt) - from repeated going; भीरु (bhīru) - O timid one; पन्थानः (panthānaḥ) - paths; विदिता (viditā) - are known; मम (mama) - to me; वृक्षान्तरआलोकितया (vṛkṣāntarālokitayā) - by the light seen through the spaces between trees; ज्योत्स्नया (jyotsnayā) - by moonlight; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; लक्षये (lakṣaye) - I perceive;]
(From repeated going, O timid one, the paths are known to me; by the moonlight seen through the spaces between trees, also, I perceive.)
O timid one, because I have walked these paths often, I know them well; and I can also recognize them by the moonlight shining between the trees. (03-281-105)
आगतौ स्वः पथा येन फलान्यवचितानि च। यथागतं शुभे गच्छ पन्थानं मा विचारय ॥०३-२८१-१०६॥

पलाशषण्डे चैतस्मिन्पन्था व्यावर्तते द्विधा। तस्योत्तरेण यः पन्थास्तेन गच्छ त्वरस्व च ॥ स्वस्थोऽस्मि बलवानस्मि दिदृक्षुः पितरावुभौ ॥०३-२८१-१०७॥
palāśaṣaṇḍe caitasmin panthā vyāvartate dvidhā। tasyottareṇa yaḥ panthās tena gaccha tvarasva ca ॥ svastho'smi balavānasmi didṛkṣuḥ pitarāvubhau ॥03-281-107॥
