मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

Mārkaṇḍeya said.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु द्युमत्सेनो महावने। लब्धचक्षुः प्रसन्नात्मा दृष्ट्या सर्वं ददर्श ह ॥०३-२८२-१॥
etasminn eva kāle tu dyumat-seno mahāvane। labdha-cakṣuḥ prasannātmā dṛṣṭyā sarvaṃ dadarśa ha ॥03-282-1॥
[एतस्मिन्नेव (etasminn eva) - in this very (time/place); काले (kāle) - time; तु (tu) - but; द्युमत्सेनः (dyumat-senaḥ) - Dyumatsena (proper noun); महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest; लब्धचक्षुः (labdha-cakṣuḥ) - having obtained sight; प्रसन्नात्मा (prasannātmā) - with tranquil mind; दृष्ट्या (dṛṣṭyā) - with his vision; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all (everything); ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(In this very time but Dyumatsena in the great forest, having obtained sight, with tranquil mind, with his vision, all he saw indeed.)
But at this very time, in the great forest, Dyumatsena, having regained his sight and with a tranquil mind, saw everything with his own eyes. (03-282-1)
स सर्वानाश्रमान्गत्वा शैब्यया सह भार्यया। पुत्रहेतोः परामार्तिं जगाम मनुजर्षभ ॥०३-२८२-२॥
saḥ sarvān āśramān gatvā śaibyayā saha bhāryayā | putra-hetoḥ parām ārtiṃ jagāma manuja-ṛṣabha ॥03-282-2॥
[स (saḥ) - he; सर्वानाश्रमान् (sarvān āśramān) - all hermitages; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; शैब्यया (śaibyayā) - with Śaibya; सह (saha) - with; भार्यया (bhāryayā) - wife; पुत्रहेतोः (putra-hetoḥ) - for the sake of (his) son; पराम् (parām) - extreme; आर्तिं (ārtiṃ) - affliction; जगाम (jagāma) - he went (into); मनुजर्षभ (manuja-ṛṣabha) - bull among men;]
(He, having gone to all the hermitages with Śaibya, with (his) wife, for the sake of (his) son, went into extreme affliction, O bull among men.)
O best of men, for the sake of his son, he visited all the hermitages with Śaibya, his wife, and fell into the deepest distress. (03-282-2)
तावाश्रमान्नदीश्चैव वनानि च सरांसि च। तांस्तान्देशान्विचिन्वन्तौ दम्पती परिजग्मतुः ॥०३-२८२-३॥
tāv āśramān nadīś caiva vanāni ca sarāṃsi ca। tāṃs tān deśān vicinvantau dampatī parijagmatuh ॥03-282-3॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; आश्रमान् (āśramān) - hermitages; नदीः (nadīḥ) - rivers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; च (ca) - and; सरांसि (sarāṃsi) - lakes; च (ca) - and; ताञ् (tān) - those; तान् (tān) - those; देशान् (deśān) - regions; विचिन्वन्तौ (vicinvantau) - searching; दम्पती (dampatī) - the husband and wife; परिजग्मतुः (parijagmatuh) - went about;]
(Those two, hermitages, rivers, and indeed forests and lakes, those various regions searching, the husband and wife went about.)
The husband and wife wandered through hermitages, rivers, forests, and lakes, searching all those regions. (03-282-3)
श्रुत्वा शब्दं तु यत्किञ्चिदुन्मुखौ सुतशङ्कया। सावित्रीसहितोऽभ्येति सत्यवानित्यधावताम् ॥०३-२८२-४॥
śrutvā śabdaṃ tu yatkiñcid unmukhau suta-śaṅkayā। sāvittrī-sahitaḥ abhyeti satyavān iti adhāvatām ॥03-282-4॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; शब्दं (śabdaṃ) - sound; तु (tu) - but; यत् (yat) - which; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; उन्मुखौ (unmukhau) - both turned toward (it); सुतशङ्कया (suta-śaṅkayā) - by suspicion about the son; सावित्रीसहितः (sāvittrī-sahitaḥ) - together with Sāvitrī; अभ्येति (abhyeti) - comes forward; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavān; इति (iti) - thus; अधावताम् (adhāvatām) - they ran;]
(Having heard a certain sound, but (they), both turning (toward it) out of suspicion about the son, together with Sāvitrī, Satyavān thus comes forward—they ran.)

भिन्नैश्च परुषैः पादैः सव्रणैः शोणितोक्षितैः। कुशकण्टकविद्धाङ्गावुन्मत्ताविव धावतः ॥०३-२८२-५॥
bhinnaiz ca paruṣaiḥ pādaiḥ savraṇaiḥ śoṇitokṣitaiḥ। kuśakaṇṭakaviddhāṅgāvunmattāviv dhāvataḥ॥03-282-5॥
[भिन्नैः (bhinnaḥ) - broken; shattered; च (ca) - and; परुषैः (paruṣaiḥ) - rough; पादैः (pādaiḥ) - feet; सव्रणैः (savraṇaiḥ) - with wounds; शोणितोक्षितैः (śoṇitokṣitaiḥ) - smeared with blood; कुशकण्टकविद्धाङ्गौ (kuśakaṇṭakaviddhāṅgau) - with limbs pierced by kuśa grass and thorns; उन्मत्तौ इव (unmattau iva) - like madmen; धावतः (dhāvataḥ) - (they) run;]
(Broken and rough feet, with wounds, smeared with blood, with limbs pierced by kuśa grass and thorns, like madmen, (they) run.)
With broken, rough, wounded, blood-stained feet, and limbs pierced by kuśa grass and thorns, the two ran about like madmen. (03-282-5)
ततोऽभिसृत्य तैर्विप्रैः सर्वैराश्रमवासिभिः। परिवार्य समाश्वास्य समानीतौ स्वमाश्रमम् ॥०३-२८२-६॥
tato'bhisṛtya tair vipraiḥ sarvair āśramavāsibhiḥ। parivārya samāśvāsya samānītau svam āśramam॥03-282-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभिसृत्य (abhisṛtya) - having approached; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - by the Brāhmaṇas; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; आश्रमवासिभिः (āśramavāsibhiḥ) - by the hermitage-dwellers; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; समाश्वास्य (samāśvāsya) - having comforted; समानीतौ (samānītau) - (they) brought; स्वम् (svam) - to own; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage;]
(Then, having approached by those Brāhmaṇas, all the hermitage-dwellers, having surrounded and having comforted, (they) brought (them) to their own hermitage.)

तत्र भार्यासहायः स वृतो वृद्धैस्तपोधनैः। आश्वासितो विचित्रार्थैः पूर्वराज्ञां कथाश्रयैः ॥०३-२८२-७॥
tatra bhāryāsahāyaḥ sa vṛto vṛddhaistapodhanaiḥ। āśvāsito vicitrārthaiḥ pūrvarājñāṃ kathāśrayaiḥ॥03-282-7॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; भार्यासहायः (bhāryāsahāyaḥ) - with (his) wife as companion; स (sa) - he; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; वृद्धैः (vṛddhaiḥ) - by the aged; तपोधनैः (tapodhanaiḥ) - by ascetics (whose wealth is austerity); आश्वासितः (āśvāsitaḥ) - consoled; विचित्रार्थैः (vicitrārthaiḥ) - by wondrous words; पूर्वराज्ञां (pūrvārājñām) - of former kings; कथाश्रयैः (kathāśrayaiḥ) - resting upon stories;]
(There, with his wife as companion, he, surrounded by the aged ascetics, consoled by wondrous words resting upon stories of former kings.)

ततस्तौ पुनराश्वस्तौ वृद्धौ पुत्रदिदृक्षया। बाल्ये वृत्तानि पुत्रस्य स्मरन्तौ भृशदुःखितौ ॥०३-२८२-८॥
tatastau punar āśvastau vṛddhau putra-didṛkṣayā। bālye vṛttāni putrasya smarantau bhṛśa-duḥkhitau ॥03-282-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तौ (tau) - those two; पुनः (punar) - again; आश्वस्तौ (āśvastau) - reassured; वृद्धौ (vṛddhau) - the old; पुत्रदिदृक्षया (putra-didṛkṣayā) - with desire to see their son; बाल्ये (bālye) - in (his) childhood; वृत्तानि (vṛttāni) - events; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; स्मरन्तौ (smarantau) - remembering; भृशदुःखितौ (bhṛśa-duḥkhitau) - greatly afflicted with grief;]
(Then those two, again reassured, the old, with desire to see their son, events of (his) childhood of the son remembering, greatly afflicted with grief.)
Then those two old people, reassured once more and longing to see their son, remembered the events of his childhood and were deeply afflicted with grief. (03-282-8)
पुनरुक्त्वा च करुणां वाचं तौ शोककर्शितौ। हा पुत्र हा साध्वि वधूः क्वासि क्वासीत्यरोदताम् ॥०३-२८२-९॥
punaruktvā ca karuṇāṃ vācaṃ tau śoka-karśitau। hā putra hā sādhvi vadhūḥ kvāsi kvāsītyarodatām॥03-282-9॥
[पुनरुक्त्वा (punar-uktvā) - again speaking; च (ca) - and; करुणां (karuṇām) - compassionate; वाचं (vācam) - speech; तौ (tau) - those two; शोककर्शितौ (śoka-karśitau) - emaciated by grief; हा (hā) - alas; पुत्र (putra) - son; हा (hā) - alas; साध्वि (sādhvi) - O virtuous one; वधूः (vadhūḥ) - daughter-in-law; क्व (kva) - where; असि (asi) - are you; क्व (kva) - where; असीति (asīti) - are you (thus); अरोदताम् (arodatām) - they both cried;]
(Again speaking compassionate speech those two emaciated by grief "Alas, son! Alas, O virtuous daughter-in-law! Where are you, where are you?"—thus they both cried.)
The two, emaciated by grief, once again uttered compassionate words: "Alas, son! Alas, O virtuous daughter-in-law! Where are you, where are you?"—and wept. (03-282-9)

यथास्य भार्या सावित्री तपसा च दमेन च। आचारेण च संयुक्ता तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥०३-२८२-१०॥
yathāsya bhāryā sāvitrī tapasā ca damena ca. ācāreṇa ca saṁyuktā tathā jīvati satyavān ॥03-282-10॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; अस्य (asya) - his; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; सावित्री (sāvitrī) - Savitri; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; च (ca) - and; दमेन (damena) - by self-restraint; च (ca) - and; आचारेण (ācāreṇa) - by good conduct; च (ca) - and; संयुक्ता (saṁyuktā) - endowed; तथा (tathā) - thus; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavan;]
(Just as his wife Savitri, endowed with austerity and with self-restraint and with conduct and thus lives Satyavan.)
Just as Savitri, Satyavan's wife, is endowed with austerity, self-restraint, and good conduct, so too Satyavan lives. (03-282-10)

वेदाः साङ्गा मयाधीतास्तपो मे सञ्चितं महत्। कौमारं ब्रह्मचर्यं मे गुरवोऽग्निश्च तोषिताः ॥०३-२८२-११॥
vedāḥ sāṅgā mayādhītās tapo me sañcitaṃ mahat। kaumāraṃ brahmacaryaṃ me guravo'gniś ca toṣitāḥ ॥03-282-11॥
[वेदाः (vedāḥ) - the Vedas; साङ्गाः (sāṅgāḥ) - with their limbs (ancillary sciences); मया (mayā) - by me; अधीताः (adhītāḥ) - have been studied; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; मे (me) - by me; सञ्चितं (sañcitaṃ) - accumulated; महत् (mahat) - great; कौमारं (kaumāram) - pertaining to childhood; ब्रह्मचर्यं (brahmacaryaṃ) - celibate student life; मे (me) - by me; गुरवः (guravaḥ) - teachers; अग्निः (agniḥ) - the sacred fire; च (ca) - and; तोषिताः (toṣitāḥ) - have been pleased;]
(The Vedas with their ancillaries have by me been studied; austerity by me, accumulated, great; childhood celibacy by me; teachers and the sacred fire have been pleased.)
I have studied the Vedas with their ancillary sciences; I have accumulated great austerity; I maintained the celibate student’s discipline from my childhood; my teachers and the sacred fire have been pleased. (03-282-11)
समाहितेन चीर्णानि सर्वाण्येव व्रतानि मे। वायुभक्षोपवासश्च कुशलानि च यानि मे ॥०३-२८२-१२॥
samāhitenā cīrṇāni sarvāṇyeva vratāni me। vāyubhakṣopavāsaś ca kuśalāni ca yāni me॥03-282-12॥
[समाहितेन (samāhitena) - by the concentrated (mind); चीर्णानि (cīrṇāni) - performed; passed through; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; व्रतानि (vratāni) - vows; मे (me) - by me; वायुभक्ष-उपवासः (vāyubhakṣa-upavāsaḥ) - fast of air-eating; च (ca) - and; कुशलानि (kuśalāni) - auspicious acts; च (ca) - and; यानि (yāni) - whichever; मे (me) - by me;]
(By the concentrated (mind) performed, indeed all vows by me; the fast of air-eating, and auspicious acts, and whichever by me.)
By my power of concentration, I have performed all the vows, including the fasts of subsisting on air, and whatever other auspicious acts I have undertaken. (03-282-12)
अनेन तपसा वेद्मि सर्वं परिचिकीर्षितम्। सत्यमेतन्निबोध त्वं ध्रियते सत्यवानिति ॥०३-२८२-१३॥
anena tapasā vedmi sarvaṃ paricikirṣitam. satyam etan nibodha tvaṃ dhriyate satyavān iti ॥03-282-13॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; (instrumental singular pronoun); तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; (instrumental singular of tapas); वेद्मि (vedmi) - I know; (first person singular of √vid); सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; everything; परिचिकीर्षितम् (paricikirṣitam) - (what is) intended to be accomplished; (gerundive of pari + √kṛ); सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; true; truly; एतन् (etan) - this; (neuter singular pronoun); निबोध (nibodha) - know; understand; (second person singular imperative of √budh with ni); त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; ध्रियते (dhriyate) - is held; is maintained; (third person singular, passive of √dhṛ); सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavān; (proper noun); इति (iti) - thus; so; (quotation particle);]
(By this austerity I know all that is intended to be accomplished. Truly, this—know you—that Satyavān is held thus.)
By this austerity I know everything that is intended to be accomplished. It is true—understand this, that Satyavān is thus (restored). (03-282-13)
शिष्य उवाच॥

The disciple said.
उपाध्यायस्य मे वक्त्राद्यथा वाक्यं विनिःसृतम्। नैतज्जातु भवेन्मिथ्या तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥०३-२८२-१४॥
upādhyāyasya me vaktrādyathā vākyaṃ viniḥsṛtam। naitajjātu bhavenmithyā tathā jīvati satyavān ॥03-282-14॥
[उपाध्यायस्य (upādhyāyasya) - of the teacher; मे (me) - my; वक्त्रात् (vaktrāt) - from (his) mouth; यथा (yathā) - as; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; विनिःसृतम् (viniḥsṛtam) - has issued; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; जातु (jātu) - ever; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; मिथ्या (mithyā) - false; तथा (tathā) - in that way; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavan;]
(Of the teacher my from mouth as speech has issued; not this ever may be false; in that way lives Satyavan.)
Just as the words that have come from my teacher's mouth, this will never be false; in this way Satyavan lives. (03-282-14)
ऋषय ऊचुः॥

The sages said:
यथास्य भार्या सावित्री सर्वैरेव सुलक्षणैः। अवैधव्यकरैर्युक्ता तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥०३-२८२-१५॥
yathāsya bhāryā sāvitri sarvaireva sulakṣaṇaiḥ। avaidhuavyakarairyuktā tathā jīvati satyavān ॥03-282-15॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the way that; अस्य (asya) - his; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; सावित्री (sāvitri) - Savitri; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; एव (eva) - indeed; just; सुलक्षणैः (sulakṣaṇaiḥ) - with auspicious marks; अवैधव्यकरैः (avaidhavyakaraiḥ) - causing freedom from widowhood; युक्ता (yuktā) - endowed; तथा (tathā) - so; thus; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavan;]
(Just as his wife Savitri is endowed with all auspicious marks and with those that cause freedom from widowhood, so Satyavan lives.)
As Savitri, his wife, is endowed with every auspicious mark that ensures freedom from widowhood, so too does Satyavan live. (03-282-15)
भारद्वाज उवाच॥

Just as Savitri, his wife, is endowed with austerity, self-restraint, and good conduct, so too does Satyavan live in the same way. (03-282-16)
दाल्भ्य उवाच॥

यथा दृष्टिः प्रवृत्ता ते सावित्र्याश्च यथा व्रतम्। गताहारमकृत्वा च तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥०३-२८२-१७॥
yathā dṛṣṭiḥ pravṛttā te sāvotryāś ca yathā vratam। gatāhāram akṛtvā ca tathā jīvati satyavān॥03-282-17॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; like; दृष्टिः (dṛṣṭiḥ) - perception; sight; प्रवृत्ता (pravṛttā) - engaged; directed; set forth; ते (te) - your; of you; सावित्र्याश्च (sāvotryāś ca) - and of Sāvitrī; यथा (yathā) - as; like; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; observance; गताहारम् (gatāhāram) - having ceased eating; without food; अकृत्वा (akṛtvā) - not doing; not performing; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavān;]
(As the sight is directed of you, and as the vow of Sāvitrī; without food, not doing (other things), and thus Satyavān lives.)
Just as your sight is set, and as is Sāvitrī’s vow—having given up food without breaking it—so Satyavān lives. (03-282-17)
माण्डव्य उवाच॥

यथा वदन्ति शान्तायां दिशि वै मृगपक्षिणः। पार्थिवी च प्रवृत्तिस्ते तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥०३-२८२-१८॥
yathā vadanti śāntāyāṃ diśi vai mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ। pārthivī ca pravṛttis te tathā jīvati satyavān॥03-282-18॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the way that; वदन्ति (vadanti) - they say; speak; शान्तायाम् (śāntāyām) - in the quiet; peaceful; दिशि (diśi) - in the direction; quarter; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; मृगपक्षिणः (mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ) - beasts and birds; animals and birds; पार्थिवी (pārthivī) - earthly; of the earth; च (ca) - and; प्रवृत्तिः (pravṛttiḥ) - activity; movement; ते (te) - of him; his; तथा (tathā) - so; in that manner; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; is alive; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavan; (proper noun);]
(As they say, in the quiet direction indeed, the animals and birds (are), and the earthly activity of him also, so Satyavan lives.)
Just as they say that in the peaceful region the animals and birds exist and there is also his earthly activity, in the same way, Satyavan lives. (03-282-18)
धौम्य उवाच॥

सर्वैर्गुणैरुपेतस्ते यथा पुत्रो जनप्रियः। दीर्घायुर्लक्षणोपेतस्तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥०३-२८२-१९॥
sarvair guṇair upetaḥ te yathā putro janapriyaḥ। dīrghāyur lakṣaṇa-upetaḥ tathā jīvati satyavān॥03-282-19॥

ततो मुहूर्तात्सावित्री भर्त्रा सत्यवता सह। आजगामाश्रमं रात्रौ प्रहृष्टा प्रविवेश ह ॥०३-२८२-२१॥

O lord of the earth, seeing you today united with your son and having your sight, we all indeed ask about your welfare. (03-282-22)
समागमेन पुत्रस्य सावित्र्या दर्शनेन च। चक्षुषश्चात्मनो लाभात्त्रिभिर्दिष्ट्या विवर्धसे ॥०३-२८२-२३॥
samāgamena putrasya sāvitryā darśanena ca। cakṣuṣaś cātmano lābhāt tribhir diṣṭyā vivardhase ॥03-282-23॥

(By the meeting of the son, by Sāvitrī, and by the vision; and from the gain of the eye and of the self, by these three by (good) fortune you prosper.)
By the good fortune of these three — the meeting with your son, with Sāvitrī, and the restoration of sight and self — you thrive. (03-282-23)
सर्वैरस्माभिरुक्तं यत्तथा तन्नात्र संशयः। भूयो भूयश्च वृद्धिस्ते क्षिप्रमेव भविष्यति ॥०३-२८२-२४॥
sarvair asmābhir uktaṁ yat tathā tan nātra saṁśayaḥ। bhūyo bhūyaś ca vṛddhis te kṣipram eva bhaviṣyati ॥03-282-24॥

What has thus been spoken here by all of us—that is without doubt. Again and again, your increase will indeed be quick. (03-282-24)

शैब्या च सत्यवांश्चैव सावित्री चैकतः स्थिताः। सर्वैस्तैरभ्यनुज्ञाता विशोकाः समुपाविशन् ॥०३-२८२-२६॥

ततो राज्ञा सहासीनाः सर्वे ते वनवासिनः। जातकौतूहलाः पार्थ पप्रच्छुर्नृपतेः सुतम् ॥०३-२८२-२७॥
tato rājñā sahāsīnāḥ sarve te vanavāsinaḥ। jātakautūhalāḥ pārtha papracchurnṛpateḥ sutam ॥03-282-27॥

प्रागेव नागतं कस्मात्सभार्येण त्वया विभो। विरात्रे चागतं कस्मात्कोऽनुबन्धश्च तेऽभवत् ॥०३-२८२-२८॥
prāgeva nāgataṃ kasmātsabhāryeṇa tvayā vibho। virātre cāgataṃ kasmātko'nubandhaśca te'bhavat ॥03-282-28॥

(Earlier indeed not come why with wife by you O lord. During the night and come why what connection and for you was.)
O lord, why did you not come earlier with your wife? And why did you come during the night? What was the reason of your connection? (03-282-28)
सन्तापितः पिता माता वयं चैव नृपात्मज। नाकस्मादिति जानीमस्तत्सर्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-२८२-२९॥
santāpitaḥ pitā mātā vayaṃ caiva nṝpātmaja। nākasmāditi jānīmastatsarvaṃ vaktumarhasi॥03-282-29॥
[सन्तापितः (santāpitaḥ) - afflicted; पिता (pitā) - father; माता (mātā) - mother; वयम् (vayam) - we; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नृपात्मज (nṛpātmaja) - O king's son; न (na) - not; अकस्मात् (akasmāt) - without cause; इति (iti) - thus; जानीमः (jānīmaḥ) - we know; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]

(By my father, I, having been permitted, together with Sāvitrī, gone. Then to me head-pain arose, in the forest, woods while splitting.)
Having received permission from my father, I went together with Sāvitrī. Then, while splitting wood in the forest, I experienced a headache. (03-282-30)
सुप्तश्चाहं वेदनया चिरमित्युपलक्षये। तावत्कालं च न मया सुप्तपूर्वं कदाचन ॥०३-२८२-३१॥
suptaścāhaṃ vedanayā ciramityupalakṣaye। tāvatkālaṃ ca na mayā suptapūrvaṃ kadācana॥03-282-31॥
[सुप्तः (suptaḥ) - slept; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; वेदनया (vedanayā) - by sensation; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; इति (iti) - thus; उपलक्षये (upalakṣaye) - I perceive; तावत्कालम् (tāvatkālam) - for so long; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; मया (mayā) - by me; सुप्तपूर्वम् (suptapūrvam) - slept before; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time;]
(Slept and I by sensation for a long time thus I perceive. For so long and not by me slept before at any time.)
I perceive by sensation that I have slept for a long time. Never before have I slept for so long as this. (03-282-31)
सर्वेषामेव भवतां सन्तापो मा भवेदिति। अतो विरात्रागमनं नान्यदस्तीह कारणम् ॥०३-२८२-३२॥
sarveṣāmeva bhavatāṃ santāpo mā bhavediti. ato virātrāgamanaṃ nānyadastīha kāraṇam ॥03-282-32॥

(Of all indeed, of you, affliction not may there be, thus. Therefore, arrival after night, not other is here reason.)
Indeed, the only reason for my returning after night is that I wished none of you should suffer affliction. (03-282-32)

[अकस्मात् (akasmāt) - suddenly; spontaneously; चक्षुषः (cakṣuṣaḥ) - of (his) eyesight; प्राप्तिः (prāptiḥ) - attainment; acquisition; द्युमत्सेनस्य (dyumatsenasya) - of Dyumatsena; ते (te) - your; पितुः (pituḥ) - father; न (na) - not; अस्य (asya) - of this; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - the reason; वेत्थ (vettha) - know; सावित्री (sāvitrī) - Savitri; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to tell; अर्हति (arhati) - (she) is worthy; (she) ought;]
(Suddenly, the attainment of eyesight of Dyumatsena, your father; not of this you the reason know; Savitri to tell is worthy.)
The sudden regaining of eyesight by your father Dyumatsena—you do not know the reason for this; Savitri ought to tell.
श्रोतुमिच्छामि सावित्रि त्वं हि वेत्थ परावरम्। त्वां हि जानामि सावित्रि सावित्रीमिव तेजसा ॥०३-२८२-३४॥
śrotum icchāmi sāvitri tvaṃ hi vettha parāvaram। tvāṃ hi jānāmi sāvitri sāvitrīm iva tejasā ॥03-282-34॥
[श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; to listen; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; I desire; सावित्रि (sāvitri) - O Sāvitrī; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; परावरम् (parāvaram) - the highest and lowest; all extremes; everything; त्वाम् (tvāṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; सावित्रि (sāvitri) - O Sāvitrī; सावित्रीम् (sāvitrīm) - Sāvitrī (the goddess or sun's power); इव (iva) - like; as if; तेजसा (tejasā) - by radiance; with brilliance;]
(To hear I wish, O Sāvitrī, you indeed know the highest and lowest. You indeed I know, O Sāvitrī, like Sāvitrī by radiance.)
O Sāvitrī, I wish to hear from you, for you indeed know all things. I truly recognize you, O Sāvitrī, to be as radiant as Sāvitrī herself. (03-282-34)
त्वमत्र हेतुं जानीषे तस्मात्सत्यं निरुच्यताम्। रहस्यं यदि ते नास्ति किञ्चिदत्र वदस्व नः ॥०३-२८२-३५॥
tvam atra hetuṃ jānīṣe tasmāt satyaṃ nirucyatām। rahasyaṃ yadi te nāsti kiñcid atra vadasva naḥ॥03-282-35॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; अत्र (atra) - here; हेतुम् (hetum) - cause; reason; जानीषे (jānīṣe) - you know; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; निरुच्यताम् (nirucyatām) - let (it) be stated; let it be declared; रहस्यं (rahasyaṃ) - secret; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - by you; to you; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अत्र (atra) - here; वदस्व (vadasva) - tell; say; नः (naḥ) - to us;]
(You here the cause know, therefore the truth let it be stated. The secret, if by you does not exist anything here, tell us.)
You know the reason here, therefore let the truth be declared. If you do not have any secret here, say so to us. (03-282-35)

evam etad yathā vettha saṅkalpo nānyathā hi vaḥ। na ca kiñcid rahasyaṃ me śrūyatāṃ tathyam atra yat ॥03-282-36॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; सङ्कल्पः (saṅkalpaḥ) - determination; न (na) - not; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; हि (hi) - indeed; वः (vaḥ) - of you; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; रहस्यं (rahasyaṃ) - secret; मे (me) - to me; श्रूयताम् (śrūyatām) - let it be heard; तथ्यम् (tathyam) - true; अत्र (atra) - here; यत् (yat) - which;]
(Thus this as you know (it is); the determination is not otherwise indeed of you. And not anything secret of me let it be heard; that which here is true.)
It is thus as you know; your resolve is indeed not otherwise. Nor is there any secret of mine—let what is true here be heard. (03-282-36)
मृत्युर्मे भर्तुराख्यातो नारदेन महात्मना। स चाद्य दिवसः प्राप्तस्ततो नैनं जहाम्यहम् ॥०३-२८२-३७॥
mṛtyur me bhartur ākhyāto nāradena mahātmanā। sa ca adya divasaḥ prāptaḥ tataḥ na enam jahāmi aham॥03-282-37॥

(Death of my husband has been predicted to me by Nārada, the great-souled; and that day is today arrived; therefore, not him I abandon, I.)

सुप्तं चैनं यमः साक्षादुपागच्छत्सकिङ्करः। स एनमनयद्बद्ध्वा दिशं पितृनिषेविताम् ॥०३-२८२-३८॥
suptaṃ ca enaṃ yamaḥ sākṣād upāgacchat sa-kiṅkaraḥ। sa enaṃ anayad baddhvā diśaṃ pitṛ-niṣevitām॥03-282-38॥
[सुप्तं (suptam) - asleep; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; उपागच्छत् (upāgacchat) - approached; सकिङ्करः (sa-kiṅkaraḥ) - with attendants; सः (saḥ) - he; एनम् (enam) - him; अनयत् (anayad) - led; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - binding; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; पितृनिषेविताम् (pitṛ-niṣevitām) - attended by ancestors;]
(Asleep and him Yama directly approached with attendants. He him led binding (to) the direction attended by ancestors.)
While he was asleep, Yama himself, accompanied by attendants, directly approached him. Having bound him, Yama led him to the realm attended by the ancestors. (03-282-38)
अस्तौषं तमहं देवं सत्येन वचसा विभुम्। पञ्च वै तेन मे दत्ता वराः शृणुत तान्मम ॥०३-२८२-३९॥
astauṣaṁ tam ahaṁ devaṁ satyena vacasā vibhum। pañca vai tena me dattā varāḥ śṛṇuta tān mama ॥03-282-39॥
[अस्तौषं (astauṣam) - I praised; तम् (tam) - him; अहम् (aham) - I; देवम् (devam) - the god; सत्येन (satyena) - with truth; वचसा (vacasā) - with speech; विभुम् (vibhum) - the all-pervading one; पञ्च (pañca) - five; वै (vai) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by him; मे (me) - to me; दत्ता (dattā) - given; वराः (varāḥ) - boons; शृणुत (śṛṇuta) - hear; तान् (tān) - those; मम (mama) - my;]
(I praised him, I, the god, with true speech, the all-pervading one. Five indeed by him to me given boons; hear those of mine.)
I praised that god, the all-pervading one, with words of truth. He indeed gave me five boons; hear what they are, O listen to my boons. (03-282-39)
चक्षुषी च स्वराज्यं च द्वौ वरौ श्वशुरस्य मे। लब्धं पितुः पुत्रशतं पुत्राणामात्मनः शतम् ॥०३-२८२-४०॥
cakṣuṣī ca svarājyaṃ ca dvau varau śvaśurasya me। labdhaṃ pituḥ putraśataṃ putrāṇām ātmanaḥ śatam ॥03-282-40॥
[चक्षुषी (cakṣuṣī) - two eyes; च (ca) - and; स्वराज्यं (svarājyaṃ) - independent sovereignty; च (ca) - and; द्वौ (dvau) - two; वरौ (varau) - boons; श्वशुरस्य (śvaśurasya) - of father-in-law; मे (me) - to me; लब्धं (labdhaṃ) - obtained; पितुः (pituḥ) - from father; पुत्रशतं (putraśatam) - hundred sons; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of sons; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - myself; शतम् (śatam) - hundred;]
(Two eyes and independent sovereignty, two boons of my father-in-law to me; obtained from father a hundred sons, of sons myself a hundred.)
I received two boons from my father-in-law: my eyesight and independent rule; from my father, I obtained a hundred sons, and for my own sons as well, a hundred. (03-282-40)
चतुर्वर्षशतायुर्मे भर्ता लब्धश्च सत्यवान्। भर्तुर्हि जीवितार्थं तु मया चीर्णं स्थिरं व्रतम् ॥०३-२८२-४१॥
catur-varṣa-śata-āyur me bhartā labdhaś ca satyavān। bhartuḥ hi jīvita-artham tu mayā cīrṇaṃ sthiraṃ vratam ॥03-282-41॥
[चतुर्वर्षशत (catur-varṣa-śata) - of four hundred years; आयुः (āyuḥ) - life-span; मे (me) - for me; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; लब्धः (labdhaḥ) - obtained; च (ca) - and; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - Satyavan; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - for the husband; हि (hi) - indeed; जीवितार्थम् (jīvita-artham) - for the sake of life; तु (tu) - but; मया (mayā) - by me; चीर्णम् (cīrṇam) - has been performed; स्थिरम् (sthiram) - steadfast; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow;]
(Of four hundred years life-span for me, husband obtained and Satyavan; for the husband indeed for the sake of life but by me has been performed steadfast vow.)
For me, a husband with a life-span of four hundred years, Satyavan, has been obtained; indeed, for my husband's sake, I have steadfastly performed the vow for his life. (03-282-41)
एतत्सत्यं मयाख्यातं कारणं विस्तरेण वः। यथा वृत्तं सुखोदर्कमिदं दुःखं महन्मम ॥०३-२८२-४२॥
etatsatyaṃ mayākhyātaṃ kāraṇaṃ vistareṇa vaḥ। yathā vṛttaṃ sukhodarkamidaṃ duḥkhaṃ mahanmama॥03-282-42॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - true; मया (mayā) - by me; आख्यातं (ākhyātaṃ) - declared; कारणं (kāraṇaṃ) - the cause; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; वः (vaḥ) - to you (plural); यथा (yathā) - how; वृत्तं (vṛttaṃ) - it happened; सुखोदर्कम् (sukhodarkam) - resulting in happiness; इदम् (idam) - this; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - sorrow; महत् (mahat) - great; मम (mama) - of mine;]
(This true (thing) has been declared by me, the cause in detail to you; how it happened, this sorrow of mine, great, resulting in happiness.)
This truth has been declared by me; I have explained to you in detail the cause, and how this great sorrow of mine, which will end in happiness, came to be. (03-282-42)
ऋषय ऊचुः॥
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ॥
[ऋषय (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - spoke;]
(Sages spoke.)
The sages said.
निमज्जमानं व्यसनैरभिद्रुतं; कुलं नरेन्द्रस्य तमोमये ह्रदे। त्वया सुशीले धृतधर्मपुण्यया; समुद्धृतं साध्वि पुनः कुलीनया ॥०३-२८२-४३॥
nimajjamānaṃ vyasanair abhidrutaṃ; kulaṃ narendrasya tamomaye hrade. tvayā suśīle dhṛtadharmapuṇyayā; samuddhṛtaṃ sādhvi punaḥ kulīnayā ॥03-282-43॥
[निमज्जमानं (nimajjamānaṃ) - sinking; व्यसनैः (vyasanair) - by calamities; अभिद्रुतं (abhidrutaṃ) - afflicted; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; नरेन्द्रस्य (narendrasya) - of the king; तमोमये (tamomaye) - filled with darkness; ह्रदे (hrade) - in the pool; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सुशीले (suśīle) - O virtuous one; धृतधर्मपुण्यया (dhṛtadharmapuṇyayā) - endowed with firmness, righteousness, and merit; समुद्धृतं (samuddhṛtaṃ) - rescued; साध्वि (sādhvi) - O noble lady; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; कुलीनया (kulīnayā) - by one of high birth;]
(The family of the king, sinking, afflicted by calamities, in a pool filled with darkness, by you, O virtuous one, endowed with firmness, righteousness, and merit, has been rescued again, O noble lady, by one of high birth.)
O noble lady, the king's family, which was sinking and afflicted by calamities in a pool of darkness, has again been rescued by you, O virtuous and high-born one, endowed with firmness, righteousness, and merit. (03-282-43)
मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca॥

Markaṇḍeya said.
तथा प्रशस्य ह्यभिपूज्य चैव ते; वरस्त्रियं तामृषयः समागताः। नरेन्द्रमामन्त्र्य सपुत्रमञ्जसा; शिवेन जग्मुर्मुदिताः स्वमालयम् ॥०३-२८२-४४॥
tathā praśasya hy abhipūjya caiva te; varastriyaṁ tām ṛṣayaḥ samāgatāḥ. narendram āmantrya saputram añjasā; śivena jagmur muditāḥ svamālayam ॥03-282-44॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; प्रशस्य (praśasya) - having praised; हि (hi) - indeed; अभिपूज्य (abhipūjya) - having honored; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; ते (te) - they; वरस्त्रियं (varastriyaṁ) - the excellent lady; ताम् (tām) - her; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - the sages; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - having assembled; नरेन्द्रम् (narendram) - the king; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having taken leave; सपुत्रम् (saputram) - with his son; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - directly; शिवेन (śivena) - happily; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - departed; मुदिताः (muditāḥ) - rejoicing; स्वम् (svam) - their own; आलयम् (ālayam) - abode;]
(Thus, having praised indeed and having honored also, they—the sages—assembled and the excellent lady her. Having taken leave of the king with his son directly, happily they, rejoicing, departed to their own abode.)
Thus, having praised and honored the excellent lady, the assembled sages took leave of the king and his son, and rejoicing, happily departed directly to their own abode. (03-282-44)
