तस्यां रात्र्यां व्यतीतायामुदिते सूर्यमण्डले। कृतपूर्वाह्णिकाः सर्वे समेयुस्ते तपोधनाः ॥०३-२८३-१॥
tasyāṃ rātryāṃ vyatītāyām udite sūryamaṇḍale। kṛtapūrvāhṇikāḥ sarve sameyus te tapodhanāḥ ॥03-283-1॥

(In that night having passed, with the solar orb having risen, having performed the morning duties, all those ascetics assembled.)
When that night had passed and the sun had risen, all those ascetics who had performed their morning duties gathered together. (03-283-1)
तदेव सर्वं सावित्र्या महाभाग्यं महर्षयः। द्युमत्सेनाय नातृप्यन्कथयन्तः पुनः पुनः ॥०३-२८३-२॥
tadeva sarvaṃ sāvitryā mahābhāgyaṃ maharṣayaḥ। dyumatsenāya nātṛpyan kathayantaḥ punaḥ punaḥ॥03-283-2॥
[तद् (tad) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; सावित्र्या (sāvitryā) - by Sāvitrī; महाभाग्यम् (mahābhāgyam) - great fortune; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; द्युमत्सेनाय (dyumatsenāya) - to Dyumatsena; न (na) - not; अतृप्यन् (atṛpyan) - became satisfied; कथयन्तः (kathayantaḥ) - telling; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(That indeed all great fortune by Sāvitrī the great sages to Dyumatsena, not (became) satisfied, telling again and again.)
The great sages, narrating again and again to Dyumatsena all that great fortune accomplished by Sāvitrī, never became satisfied. (03-283-2)
ततः प्रकृतयः सर्वाः शाल्वेभ्योऽभ्यागता नृप। आचख्युर्निहतं चैव स्वेनामात्येन तं नृपम् ॥०३-२८३-३॥
tataḥ prakṛtayaḥ sarvāḥ śālvebhyo'bhyāgatā nṛpa। ācakhyur nihataṃ caiva svenāmātyena taṃ nṛpam ॥03-283-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रकृतयः (prakṛtayaḥ) - ministers; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; शाल्वेभ्यः (śālvebhyaḥ) - from the Śālvas; अभ्यागताः (abhyāgatāḥ) - having come; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; आचख्यु: (ācakhyuḥ) - they told; निहतम् (nihatam) - slain; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; स्वेन (svena) - by his own; अमात्येन (amātyena) - by minister; तम् (tam) - that; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king;]
(Then all the ministers, having come from the Śālvas, O king, told that king had indeed been slain by his own minister.)
Then, O king, all the ministers who had come from the Śālvas reported that the king had been slain by his own minister. (03-283-3)
तं मन्त्रिणा हतं श्रुत्वा ससहायं सबान्धवम्। न्यवेदयन्यथातत्त्वं विद्रुतं च द्विषद्बलम् ॥०३-२८३-४॥
taṃ mantriṇā hataṃ śrutvā sasahāyaṃ sabāndhavam। nyavedayan yathātattvaṃ vidrutaṃ ca dviṣad-balam॥03-283-4॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; मन्त्रिणा (mantriṇā) - by the minister; हतं (hataṃ) - killed; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ससहायं (sasahāyaṃ) - with (his) allies; सबान्धवम् (sabāndhavam) - with (his) kinsmen; न्यवेदयन् (nyavedayan) - they informed; यथातत्त्वं (yathātattvaṃ) - as actually (it was); विद्रुतं (vidrutaṃ) - fled; च (ca) - and; द्विषद्बलम् (dviṣad-balam) - enemy's army;]
(Him by the minister killed having heard, with (his) allies (and) with (his) kinsmen, they informed as actually (it was), (that) the enemy's army had fled.)
Having heard that he was killed by the minister along with his allies and kinsmen, they accurately informed that the enemy's army had fled. (03-283-4)
ऐकमत्यं च सर्वस्य जनस्याथ नृपं प्रति। सचक्षुर्वाप्यचक्षुर्वा स नो राजा भवत्विति ॥०३-२८३-५॥
aikaṁtyaṃ ca sarvasya janasya atha nṛpaṃ prati। sa cakṣur vā api acakṣur vā sa naḥ rājā bhavatu iti ॥03-283-5॥
[ऐकमत्यं (aikaṁtyam) - agreement; unity; च (ca) - and; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; जनस्य (janasya) - of people; अथ (atha) - then; नृपं (nṛpam) - to the king; प्रति (prati) - towards; स (sa) - he; चक्षुः (cakṣuḥ) - with eyes; sighted; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; अचक्षुः (acakṣuḥ) - without eyes; blind; वा (vā) - or; स (sa) - he; नः (naḥ) - our; राजा (rājā) - king; भवतु (bhavatu) - let be; may be; इति (iti) - thus; so;]
(Agreement and of all people then towards the king; he with eyes or also without eyes or he our king let be thus.)
There was agreement among all the people, and they said to the king, "Let him, whether he has sight or is blind, be our king." (03-283-5)
अनेन निश्चयेनेह वयं प्रस्थापिता नृप। प्राप्तानीमानि यानानि चतुरङ्गं च ते बलम् ॥०३-२८३-६॥
anena niścayeneha vayaṃ prasthāpitā nṛpa। prāptānīmāni yānāni caturaṅgaṃ ca te balam॥03-283-6॥

(By this determination, here we, O king, have been sent forth. These vehicles and your fourfold army have arrived.)
O king, by this determination we have been dispatched here. These vehicles and your fourfold army have arrived. (03-283-6)
प्रयाहि राजन्भद्रं ते घुष्टस्ते नगरे जयः। अध्यास्स्व चिररात्राय पितृपैतामहं पदम् ॥०३-२८३-७॥
prayāhi rājan bhadraṃ te ghūṣṭas te nagare jayaḥ। adhyāssva cirarātrāya pitṛpaitāmahaṃ padam॥03-283-7॥
[प्रयाहि (prayāhi) - go forth; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspiciousness; ते (te) - to you; घुष्टः (ghūṣṭaḥ) - celebrated; ते (te) - your; नगरे (nagare) - in the city; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; अध्यास्स्व (adhyāssva) - occupy (imperative); चिररात्राय (cirarātrāya) - for a long time; पितृपैतामहं (pitṛpaitāmaham) - of your fathers and grandfathers; पदम् (padam) - seat (throne);]
(Go forth, O king, auspiciousness to you; celebrated is your victory in the city. Occupy for a long time the seat of your fathers and grandfathers.)

चक्षुष्मन्तं च तं दृष्ट्वा राजानं वपुषान्वितम्। मूर्धभिः पतिताः सर्वे विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनाः ॥०३-२८३-८॥
cakṣuṣmantaṃ ca taṃ dṛṣṭvā rājānaṃ vapuṣānvitam। mūrdhabhiḥ patitāḥ sarve vismayotphullalocanāḥ ॥03-283-8॥
[चक्षुष्मन्तं (cakṣuṣmantam) - endowed with eyes; (i.e., seeing; conscious;) च (ca) - and; तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; राजानं (rājānam) - the king; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - with splendor; (with form; with body;) अन्वितम् (anvitam) - endowed; मूर्धभिः (mūrdhabhiḥ) - with (their) heads; पतिताः (patitāḥ) - fallen; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विस्मय (vismaya) - astonishment; उत्फुल्ल (utphulla) - expanded; (opened;) लोचनाः (locanāḥ) - eyes;]
(Having seen that king endowed with sight and splendor, all (with) astonished, wide-open eyes, fell with (their) heads.)
When they saw that king endowed with vision and splendor, all fell with their heads (to the ground), their eyes wide with astonishment. (03-283-8)
ततोऽभिवाद्य तान्वृद्धान्द्विजानाश्रमवासिनः। तैश्चाभिपूजितः सर्वैः प्रययौ नगरं प्रति ॥०३-२८३-९॥
tato'bhivādya tān vṛddhān dvijān āśramavāsinaḥ। taiś ca abhipūjitaḥ sarvaiḥ prayayau nagaraṃ prati॥03-283-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; तान् (tān) - them; वृद्धान् (vṛddhān) - elders; द्विजान् (dvijān) - twice-born; आश्रमवासिनः (āśramavāsinaḥ) - hermitage-dwellers; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; च (ca) - and; अभिपूजितः (abhipūjitaḥ) - honored; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; प्रययौ (prayayau) - he went; नगरं (nagaraṃ) - to the city; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Then, having saluted those elders, the twice-born, the hermitage-dwellers, and being honored by all of them, he went towards the city.)

शैब्या च सह सावित्र्या स्वास्तीर्णेन सुवर्चसा। नरयुक्तेन यानेन प्रययौ सेनया वृता ॥०३-२८३-१०॥
śaibyā ca saha sāvitryā svāstīrṇena suvarcasā। narayuktena yānena prayayau senayā vṛtā ॥03-283-10॥

ततोऽभिषिषिचुः प्रीत्या द्युमत्सेनं पुरोहिताः। पुत्रं चास्य महात्मानं यौवराज्येऽभ्यषेचयन् ॥०३-२८३-११॥
tato'bhiṣiṣicuḥ prītyā dyumatsenaṃ purohitāḥ। putraṃ cāsya mahātmānaṃ yauvarājye'bhyaṣecayan ॥03-283-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभिषिषिचुः (abhiṣiṣiṣuḥ) - anointed; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; द्युमत्सेनं (dyumatsenam) - Dyumatsena; पुरोहिताः (purohitāḥ) - priests; पुत्रं (putram) - son; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - great-souled; यौवराज्ये (yauvarājye) - in the position of crown prince; अभ्यषेचयन् (abhyaṣecayan) - installed;]
(Then the priests anointed Dyumatsena with affection. And his great-souled son they installed in the position of crown prince.)

ततः कालेन महता सावित्र्याः कीर्तिवर्धनम्। तद्वै पुत्रशतं जज्ञे शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् ॥०३-२८३-१२॥
tataḥ kālena mahatā sāvitryāḥ kīrtivardhanam। tadvai putraśataṃ jajñe śūrāṇāmanivartinām ॥03-283-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कालेन (kālena) - by time; महता (mahatā) - great; सावित्र्याः (sāvitryāḥ) - of Sāvitrī; कीर्तिवर्धनम् (kīrtivardhanam) - Kīrtivardhana (name of son); तत् (tat) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; पुत्रशतम् (putraśatam) - hundred sons; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; शूराणाम् (śūrāṇām) - of heroes; अनिवर्तिनाम् (anivartinām) - of those who do not turn back;]
(Then, by great time, from Sāvitrī, Kīrtivardhana. He indeed hundred sons was born, of heroes, of those who do not turn back.)
Then, after a long time, to Sāvitrī, Kīrtivardhana was born. Indeed, a hundred sons were born to him — heroes who never turned back in battle. (03-283-12)
भ्रातॄणां सोदराणां च तथैवास्याभवच्छतम्। मद्राधिपस्याश्वपतेर्मालव्यां सुमहाबलम् ॥०३-२८३-१३॥
bhrātṝṇāṃ sodarāṇāṃ ca tathaivāsyābhavac chatam। madrādhipasyāśvapater mālavyāṃ sumahābalam ॥03-283-13॥
[भ्रातॄणां (bhrātṝṇāṃ) - of brothers; सॉदराणां (sodarāṇāṃ) - of uterine brothers; च (ca) - and; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; अस्य (asya) - of him; अभवत् (abhavat) - there was; शतम् (śatam) - a hundred; मद्राधिपस्य (madrādhipasya) - of the king of Madra; अश्वपतेः (aśvapateḥ) - of Aśvapati; मालव्याम् (mālavyām) - in Mālavi; सुमहाबलम् (sumahābalam) - very mighty;]
(Of brothers, of uterine brothers and likewise, of him there was a hundred; of the king of Madra, of Aśvapati, in Mālavi, very mighty.)
He had a hundred brothers, all uterine brothers; the king of Madra, Aśvapati, in Mālavi, all of great might. (03-283-13)
एवमात्मा पिता माता श्वश्रूः श्वशुर एव च। भर्तुः कुलं च सावित्र्या सर्वं कृच्छ्रात्समुद्धृतम् ॥०३-२८३-१४॥
evam ātmā pitā mātā śvaśrūḥ śvaśura eva ca। bhartuḥ kulaṃ ca sāvitryā sarvaṃ kṛcchrāt samuddhṛtam ॥03-283-14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; पिता (pitā) - father; माता (mātā) - mother; श्वश्रूः (śvaśrūḥ) - mother-in-law; श्वशुर (śvaśura) - father-in-law; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of husband; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; च (ca) - and; सावित्र्या (sāvitryā) - by Sāvitri; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; कृच्छ्रात् (kṛcchrāt) - from distress; समुद्धृतम् (samuddhṛtam) - delivered;]
(Thus, the self, father, mother, mother-in-law, father-in-law indeed and, of the husband, family and, by Sāvitri, all from distress delivered.)
Thus, Sāvitri delivered herself, her father, mother, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and all her husband’s family from distress. (03-283-14)
तथैवैषापि कल्याणी द्रौपदी शीलसंमता। तारयिष्यति वः सर्वान्सावित्रीव कुलाङ्गना ॥०३-२८३-१५॥
tathaiva eṣā api kalyāṇī draupadī śīlasaṁmatā। tārayiṣyati vaḥ sarvān sāvitryiva kulāṅganā ॥03-283-15॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; in the same way; एषा (eṣā) - this (woman); अपि (api) - also; कल्याणी (kalyāṇī) - auspicious; virtuous; blessed; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; शीलसंमता (śīlasaṁmatā) - honored for conduct; respected for character; तारयिष्यति (tārayiṣyati) - she will deliver; she will save; वः (vaḥ) - you all; for you; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; सावित्री (sāvitrī) - Sāvitrī; इव (iva) - like; as; कुलाङ्गना (kulāṅganā) - chaste woman of the family; noble lady;]
(Just so, this auspicious Draupadī also, honored for conduct, will deliver all of you, like Sāvitrī, chaste lady of the family.)
In the same way, this virtuous Draupadī, respected for her character, will save all of you—like Sāvitrī, the noble lady of her family. (03-283-15)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said.
एवं स पाण्डवस्तेन अनुनीतो महात्मना। विशोको विज्वरो राजन्काम्यके न्यवसत्तदा ॥०३-२८३-१६॥
evaṃ sa pāṇḍavas tena anunīto mahātmanā। viśoko vijvaro rājan kāmyake nyavasat tadā ॥03-283-16॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; स (sa) - he; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna or generally a son of Pāṇḍu); तेन (tena) - by him; अनुनीतः (anunītaḥ) - consoled; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; विशोकः (viśokaḥ) - free from sorrow; विज्वरः (vijvaraḥ) - free from fever; राजन् (rājan) - O king; काम्यके (kāmyake) - at (the lake) Kāmyaka; न्यवसत् (nyavasat) - dwelled; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus, he, the Pāṇḍava, by him consoled by the great-souled one, free from sorrow, free from fever, O king, at Kāmyaka dwelled then.)
Thus, O king, the Pāṇḍava, having been consoled by the great-souled one, became free from sorrow and fever, and then dwelled at Kāmyaka. (03-283-16)
