mārkaṇḍeya uvāca॥
Markandeya said.
tasyāṃ rātryāṃ vyatītāyām udite sūryamaṇḍale। kṛtapūrvāhṇikāḥ sarve sameyus te tapodhanāḥ ॥03-283-1॥
When that night had passed and the sun had risen, all those ascetics who had performed their morning duties gathered together. (03-283-1)
tadeva sarvaṃ sāvitryā mahābhāgyaṃ maharṣayaḥ। dyumatsenāya nātṛpyan kathayantaḥ punaḥ punaḥ॥03-283-2॥
The great sages, narrating again and again to Dyumatsena all that great fortune accomplished by Sāvitrī, never became satisfied. (03-283-2)
tataḥ prakṛtayaḥ sarvāḥ śālvebhyo'bhyāgatā nṛpa। ācakhyur nihataṃ caiva svenāmātyena taṃ nṛpam ॥03-283-3॥
Then, O king, all the ministers who had come from the Śālvas reported that the king had been slain by his own minister. (03-283-3)
taṃ mantriṇā hataṃ śrutvā sasahāyaṃ sabāndhavam। nyavedayan yathātattvaṃ vidrutaṃ ca dviṣad-balam॥03-283-4॥
Having heard that he was killed by the minister along with his allies and kinsmen, they accurately informed that the enemy's army had fled. (03-283-4)
aikaṁtyaṃ ca sarvasya janasya atha nṛpaṃ prati। sa cakṣur vā api acakṣur vā sa naḥ rājā bhavatu iti ॥03-283-5॥
There was agreement among all the people, and they said to the king, "Let him, whether he has sight or is blind, be our king." (03-283-5)
anena niścayeneha vayaṃ prasthāpitā nṛpa। prāptānīmāni yānāni caturaṅgaṃ ca te balam॥03-283-6॥
O king, by this determination we have been dispatched here. These vehicles and your fourfold army have arrived. (03-283-6)
prayāhi rājan bhadraṃ te ghūṣṭas te nagare jayaḥ। adhyāssva cirarātrāya pitṛpaitāmahaṃ padam॥03-283-7॥
Go forth, O king; may auspiciousness be yours. Celebrated is your victory in the city. Occupy, for a long time, the throne of your forefathers. (03-283-7)
cakṣuṣmantaṃ ca taṃ dṛṣṭvā rājānaṃ vapuṣānvitam। mūrdhabhiḥ patitāḥ sarve vismayotphullalocanāḥ ॥03-283-8॥
When they saw that king endowed with vision and splendor, all fell with their heads (to the ground), their eyes wide with astonishment. (03-283-8)
tato'bhivādya tān vṛddhān dvijān āśramavāsinaḥ। taiś ca abhipūjitaḥ sarvaiḥ prayayau nagaraṃ prati॥03-283-9॥
Then, after saluting those elder twice-born hermitage-dwellers and being honored by all of them, he proceeded towards the city. (03-283-9)
śaibyā ca saha sāvitryā svāstīrṇena suvarcasā। narayuktena yānena prayayau senayā vṛtā ॥03-283-10॥
Śaibyā, together with Sāvitri and Suvarcas, seated in a well-spread chariot drawn by men, set out accompanied by the army. (03-283-10)
tato'bhiṣiṣicuḥ prītyā dyumatsenaṃ purohitāḥ। putraṃ cāsya mahātmānaṃ yauvarājye'bhyaṣecayan ॥03-283-11॥
Then the priests affectionately anointed Dyumatsena, and installed his great-souled son as crown prince. (03-283-11)
tataḥ kālena mahatā sāvitryāḥ kīrtivardhanam। tadvai putraśataṃ jajñe śūrāṇāmanivartinām ॥03-283-12॥
Then, after a long time, to Sāvitrī, Kīrtivardhana was born. Indeed, a hundred sons were born to him — heroes who never turned back in battle. (03-283-12)
bhrātṝṇāṃ sodarāṇāṃ ca tathaivāsyābhavac chatam। madrādhipasyāśvapater mālavyāṃ sumahābalam ॥03-283-13॥
He had a hundred brothers, all uterine brothers; the king of Madra, Aśvapati, in Mālavi, all of great might. (03-283-13)
evam ātmā pitā mātā śvaśrūḥ śvaśura eva ca। bhartuḥ kulaṃ ca sāvitryā sarvaṃ kṛcchrāt samuddhṛtam ॥03-283-14॥
Thus, Sāvitri delivered herself, her father, mother, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and all her husband’s family from distress. (03-283-14)
tathaiva eṣā api kalyāṇī draupadī śīlasaṁmatā। tārayiṣyati vaḥ sarvān sāvitryiva kulāṅganā ॥03-283-15॥
In the same way, this virtuous Draupadī, respected for her character, will save all of you—like Sāvitrī, the noble lady of her family. (03-283-15)
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
evaṃ sa pāṇḍavas tena anunīto mahātmanā। viśoko vijvaro rājan kāmyake nyavasat tadā ॥03-283-16॥
Thus, O king, the Pāṇḍava, having been consoled by the great-souled one, became free from sorrow and fever, and then dwelled at Kāmyaka. (03-283-16)
