यत्तत्तदा महाब्रह्मँल्लोमशो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। इन्द्रस्य वचनादेत्य पाण्डुपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥०३-२८४-१॥
yat tat tadā mahābrahmaṅ lomaśo vākyam abravīt । indrasya vacanāt etya pāṇḍu-putraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥03-284-1॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; तदा (tadā) - then; महाब्रह्मन् (mahābrahman) - great Brāhmaṇa; लोमशः (lomaśaḥ) - Lomaśa; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra; वचनात् (vacanāt) - by command; एत्य (etya) - having approached; पाण्डुपुत्रम् (pāṇḍu-putram) - Pāṇḍu's son; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Which that then great Brāhmaṇa Lomaśa speech spoke; by Indra's command having approached Pāṇḍu's son Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Then, great Brāhmaṇa Lomaśa, having approached Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Pāṇḍu, spoke the words (entrusted) by Indra. (03-284-1)
यच्चापि ते भयं तीव्रं न च कीर्तयसे क्वचित्। तच्चाप्यपहरिष्यामि सव्यसाचाविहागते ॥०३-२८४-२॥
yac cāpi te bhayaṁ tīvraṁ na ca kīrtayase kvacit। tac cāpy apahariṣyāmi savyasācāv ihāgate ॥03-284-2॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ते (te) - your; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; तीव्रम् (tīvram) - intense; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; कीर्तयसे (kīrtayase) - you mention; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अपहरिष्यामि (apahariṣyāmi) - I shall remove; सव्यसाचौ (savyasācau) - to Savyasācin (Arjuna); इह (iha) - here; आगते (āgate) - having arrived;]
(And which, also, your fear intense, and not you mention anywhere; that also I shall remove, to Savyasācin, here having arrived.)
And even that intense fear of yours which you do not mention anywhere, I shall also remove now that Savyasācin (Arjuna) has arrived here. (03-284-2)
किं नु तद्विदुषां श्रेष्ठ कर्णं प्रति महद्भयम्। आसीन्न च स धर्मात्मा कथयामास कस्यचित् ॥०३-२८४-३॥
kiṁ nu tad-viduṣāṁ śreṣṭha karṇaṁ prati mahad-bhayam। āsīn na ca sa dharmātmā kathayāmāsa kasyacit॥03-284-3॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तद्विदुषां (tad-viduṣām) - of those wise; श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha) - best; कर्णं (karṇam) - Karṇa; प्रति (prati) - towards; महद्भयम् (mahad-bhayam) - great fear; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; कथयामास (kathayāmāsa) - did speak; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - to anyone;]
(What indeed, of those wise, best, towards Karṇa, great fear was? And not that righteous-souled he did speak to anyone.)
Did any great fear of Karṇa exist for those wise ones? But that righteous-souled man did not speak of it to anyone. (03-284-3)

O tiger among kings, I narrate this story to you. Since you have asked, O best of the Bharatas, listen carefully to my words. (03-284-4)
द्वादशे समतिक्रान्ते वर्षे प्राप्ते त्रयोदशे। पाण्डूनां हितकृच्छक्रः कर्णं भिक्षितुमुद्यतः ॥०३-२८४-५॥
dvādaśe samatikrānte varṣe prāpte trayodaśe। pāṇḍūnāṃ hitakṛcchakraḥ karṇaṃ bhikṣitum udyataḥ॥03-284-5॥

When the twelfth year had passed and the thirteenth year arrived, for the benefit of the Pāṇḍavas, Karna, who takes pleasure in their welfare, prepared to ask for (something). (03-284-5)
अभिप्रायमथो ज्ञात्वा महेन्द्रस्य विभावसुः। कुण्डलार्थे महाराज सूर्यः कर्णमुपागमत् ॥०३-२८४-६॥
abhiprāyam atho jñātvā mahendrasya vibhāvasuḥ। kuṇḍalārthe mahārāja sūryaḥ karṇam upāgamat॥03-284-6॥
[अभिप्रायम् (abhiprāyam) - intention; अथ (atha) - then; उ (u) - indeed; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; महेन्द्रस्य (mahendrasya) - of Mahendra (Indra); विभावसुः (vibhāvasuḥ) - the radiant one (the Sun); कुण्डलार्थे (kuṇḍalārthe) - for the sake of the earring(s); महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the Sun; कर्णम् (karṇam) - to Karṇa; उपागमत् (upāgamat) - approached;]
(Having then indeed known the intention of Mahendra, the radiant one, for the sake of the earrings, O great king, the Sun approached Karṇa.)
O great king, the Sun, having understood the intention of Mahendra regarding the earrings, then approached Karṇa. (03-284-6)
महार्हे शयने वीरं स्पर्ध्यास्तरणसंवृते। शयानमभिविश्वस्तं ब्रह्मण्यं सत्यवादिनम् ॥०३-२८४-७॥
mahārhe śayane vīraṃ spardhyāstaraṇasaṃvṛte। śayānam abhiviśvastaṃ brahmaṇyaṃ satyavādinam॥03-284-7॥
[महार्हे (मह्-आर्हे) (mahārhe) - of very great value; expensive; worthy; (mahā — great, ārha — value); शयने (शयन्-ए) (śayane) - on a bed; (śayana — bed, locative singular); वीरं (vīraṃ) - hero; valiant one; स्पर्ध्यास्तरणसंवृते (स्पर्ध्या-अस्तरण-सम्-वृते) (spardhyāstaraṇasaṃvṛte) - covered with a splendid or rivaled bedding; (spardhya — to be rivaled, āstaraṇa — bedding, saṃvṛta — covered; locative singular); शयानम् (शयन्-अम्) (śayānam) - lying; (śayana — to lie down, accusative singular masculine participle); अभिविश्वस्तं (अभि-विश्वस्तम्) (abhiviśvastaṃ) - utterly confident; fully trusting; ब्रह्मण्यम् (brahmaṇyam) - dedicated to sacred knowledge; devoted to brahman; सत्यवादिनम् (satyavādinam) - speaker of truth; truth-teller;]
(On a bed of very great value, covered with splendid bedding, the hero, lying utterly confident, devoted to sacred knowledge, truth-speaking.)
Lying on a priceless bed with splendid coverings, the hero, fully confident, devoted to sacred knowledge and a speaker of truth. (03-284-7)
स्वप्नान्ते निशि राजेन्द्र दर्शयामास रश्मिवान्। कृपया परयाविष्टः पुत्रस्नेहाच्च भारत ॥०३-२८४-८॥
svapnānte niśi rājendra darśayāmāsa raśmivān। kṛpayā parayāviṣṭaḥ putrasnehāc ca bhārata॥03-284-8॥
[स्वप्नान्ते (svapnānte) - at the end of the dream; निशि (niśi) - in the night; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - he showed; रश्मिवान् (raśmivān) - the radiant one; कृपया (kṛpayā) - by compassion; परया (parayā) - by the highest; आविष्टः (āviṣṭaḥ) - overwhelmed; पुत्रस्नेहात् (putrasnehāt) - from affection for the son; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;]
(At the end of the dream, in the night, O king, the radiant one showed (it), overwhelmed by the highest compassion and from affection for his son, O descendant of Bharata.)
At the end of the dream, during the night, O King, the radiant one appeared, overwhelmed by supreme compassion and the love for his son, O Bharata. (03-284-8)
ब्राह्मणो वेदविद्भूत्वा सूर्यो योगाद्धि रूपवान्। हितार्थमब्रवीत्कर्णं सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥०३-२८४-९॥
brāhmaṇo vedavidbhūtvā sūryo yogāddhi rūpavān। hitārthamabravītkarṇaṃ sāntvapūrvamidaṃ vacaḥ॥03-284-9॥
[ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; वेदविद् (vedavid) - knower of the Veda; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the Sun; योगात् (yogāt) - by yoga; हि (hi) - indeed; रूपवान् (rūpavān) - assuming a form; हितार्थम् (hitārtham) - for (his) welfare; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke; कर्णम् (karṇam) - to Karṇa; सान्त्वपूर्वम् (sāntvapūrvam) - with conciliation at first; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Brāhmaṇa, knower of the Veda, having become, the Sun, by yoga, indeed, assuming a form, for (his) welfare, he spoke, to Karṇa, with conciliation at first, this, speech.)
The Sun, having assumed the form of a brāhmaṇa who knew the Veda by means of yoga, indeed spoke this speech to Karṇa, with conciliation at first, for his welfare. (03-284-9)
कर्ण मद्वचनं तात शृणु सत्यभृतां वर। ब्रुवतोऽद्य महाबाहो सौहृदात्परमं हितम् ॥०३-२८४-१०॥
karṇa mad-vacanaṃ tāta śṛṇu satya-bhṛtāṃ vara। bruvataḥ adya mahā-bāho sauhṛdāt paramam hitam ॥03-284-10॥
[कर्ण (karṇa) - Karna; (proper noun); मद्वचनं (mad-vacanaṃ) - my word; my speech; तात (tāta) - dear one; revered one; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; listen; सत्यभृतां (satya-bhṛtām) - of the upholders of truth; वर (vara) - best; foremost; ब्रुवतः (bruvataḥ) - speaking; (of me who speak); अद्य (adya) - today; महाबाहो (mahā-bāho) - O mighty-armed; सौहृदात् (sauhṛdāt) - from friendship; परमं (paramam) - supreme; highest; हितम् (hitam) - good; benefit;]
(Karna, my word, dear one, hear, O best of upholders of truth; of me who speak today, O mighty-armed, from friendship, (is) the supreme benefit.)
Karna, dear one, listen to my words, O foremost of those who uphold truth. What I say today, O mighty-armed, is spoken from friendship and is for your utmost good. (03-284-10)
उपायास्यति शक्रस्त्वां पाण्डवानां हितेप्सया। ब्राह्मणच्छद्मना कर्ण कुण्डलापजिहीर्षया ॥०३-२८४-११॥
upāyāsyati śakrastvāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ hitepsayā। brāhmaṇacchadmanā karṇa kuṇḍalāpajihīrṣayā ॥03-284-11॥
[उपायास्यति (upāyāsyati) - he will approach; (from upa+ā+√i, to come near or approach); शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); त्वाम् (tvām) - you; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; हित-इप्सया (hita-ipsayā) - with the desire for welfare; ब्राह्मण-छद्मना (brāhmaṇa-chadmanā) - in the disguise of a brāhmaṇa; कर्ण-कुण्डल-अप-जिहीर्षया (karṇa-kuṇḍala-apa-jihīrṣayā) - with the wish to take away ear-ornaments;]
(Śakra will approach you, for the welfare of the Pāṇḍavas, with the desire for their good, in the disguise of a brāhmaṇa, with the wish to take away (your) ear-ornaments.)
Śakra (Indra) will approach you in the disguise of a brāhmaṇa, desiring to obtain your ear-ornaments, for the benefit of the Pāṇḍavas. (03-284-11)
विदितं तेन शीलं ते सर्वस्य जगतस्तथा। यथा त्वं भिक्षितः सद्भिर्ददास्येव न याचसे ॥०३-२८४-१२॥
viditaṁ tena śīlaṁ te sarvasya jagatas tathā. yathā tvaṁ bhikṣitaḥ sadbhir dadāsi eva na yācase ॥03-284-12॥
[विदितं (viditam) - known; तेन (tena) - by him; शीलं (śīlam) - nature; ते (te) - your; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; तथा (tathā) - in that way; यथा (yathā) - as; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; भिक्षितः (bhikṣitaḥ) - asked (for alms); सद्भिः (sadbhir) - by the good; ददासि (dadāsi) - you give; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; याचसे (yācase) - you ask;]
(Known by him is your nature of all the world in that way. As you, asked by the good, give indeed, not you ask.)
Your nature is thus known by him to all the world: as, when requested by the good, you give willingly and do not ask for anything in return. (03-284-12)
त्वं हि तात ददास्येव ब्राह्मणेभ्यः प्रयाचितः। वित्तं यच्चान्यदप्याहुर्न प्रत्याख्यासि कर्हिचित् ॥०३-२८४-१३॥
tvaṃ hi tāta dadāsi eva brāhmaṇebhyaḥ prayācitaḥ। vittaṃ yat ca anyat api āhuḥ na pratyākhyāsi karhicit ॥03-284-13॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; तात (tāta) - dear one; ददासि (dadāsi) - give; एव (eva) - just; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; प्रयाचितः (prayācitaḥ) - when entreated; वित्तं (vittaṃ) - wealth; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; अपि (api) - also; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they ask; न (na) - not; प्रत्याख्यासि (pratyākhyāsi) - you reject; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - ever;]
(You indeed, dear one, just give to the Brāhmaṇas when entreated; wealth which also other (things) they ask, you do not ever reject.)
Indeed, dear one, you always give to the Brāhmaṇas when requested; you never refuse any wealth or anything else that they ask for. (03-284-13)
तं त्वामेवंविधं ज्ञात्वा स्वयं वै पाकशासनः। आगन्ता कुण्डलार्थाय कवचं चैव भिक्षितुम् ॥०३-२८४-१४॥
taṁ tvām evaṁvidhaṁ jñātvā svayaṁ vai pākaśāsanaḥ। āgantā kuṇḍalārthāya kavacaṁ caiva bhikṣitum ॥03-284-14॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; एवंविधं (evaṁvidham) - of such kind; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; वै (vai) - indeed; पाकशासनः (pākaśāsanaḥ) - Indra (the lord of Pāka/demons); आगन्ता (āgantā) - will come; कुण्डलार्थाय (kuṇḍalārthāya) - for the sake of earrings; कवचं (kavacaṁ) - armor; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भिक्षितुम् (bhikṣitum) - to beg;]
(Him you of such kind having known, himself indeed Indra will come for the sake of earrings and armor indeed to beg.)
Having recognized you thus, Indra himself will indeed come to beg from you the earrings and the armor. (03-284-14)
तस्मै प्रयाचमानाय न देये कुण्डले त्वया। अनुनेयः परं शक्त्या श्रेय एतद्धि ते परम् ॥०३-२८४-१५॥
tasmai prayācamānāya na deye kuṇḍale tvayā। anuneyaḥ paraṃ śaktyā śreya etaddhi te param ॥03-284-15॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; प्रयाचमानाय (prayācamānāya) - who is asking; न (na) - not; देये (deye) - should be given; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनुनेयः (anuneyaḥ) - should be conciliated; परं (paraṃ) - greatly; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - with ability; श्रेय (śreya) - good; एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - to you; परम् (param) - supreme;]
(To him who is asking, the earrings should not be given by you. He should be conciliated greatly with ability; this indeed is supremely good for you.)
You should not give the earrings to the one who asks for them; rather, you should conciliate him as much as you can, for this is indeed best for you. (03-284-15)
कुण्डलार्थे ब्रुवंस्तात कारणैर्बहुभिस्त्वया। अन्यैर्बहुविधैर्वित्तैः स निवार्यः पुनः पुनः ॥०३-२८४-१६॥
kuṇḍalārthe bruvaṃs tāta kāraṇair bahubhis tvayā| anyair bahuvidhair vittaiḥ sa nivāryaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ॥03-284-16॥
[कुण्डल-अर्थे (kuṇḍala-arthe) - for the purpose of earrings; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; तात (tāta) - O dear (father/son); कारणैः बहुभिः (kāraṇaiḥ bahubhiḥ) - by many reasons; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अन्यैः बहुविधैः वित्तैः (anyaiḥ bahuvidhaiḥ vittaiḥ) - other various kinds of wealth; सः (saḥ) - he; निवार्यः (nivāryaḥ) - to be restrained; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(For the sake of earrings, speaking, O dear, with many reasons by you, with other various kinds of wealth, he is to be restrained again and again.)
While he speaks for the purpose of (obtaining) earrings, O dear, he should be repeatedly restrained by you using many reasons and other kinds of wealth. (03-284-16)
रत्नैः स्त्रीभिस्तथा भोगैर्धनैर्बहुविधैरपि। निदर्शनैश्च बहुभिः कुण्डलेप्सुः पुरंदरः ॥०३-२८४-१७॥
ratnaiḥ strībhis tathā bhogair dhanaiḥ bahuvidhair api। nidarśanaiś ca bahubhiḥ kuṇḍalepsuḥ puraṁdaraḥ ॥03-284-17॥
[रत्नैः (ratnaiḥ) - by jewels; स्त्रीभिः (strībhiḥ) - by women; तथा (tathā) - in that way; likewise; भोगैः (bhogaiḥ) - by enjoyments; धनैः (dhanaiḥ) - by riches; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - by many kinds; अपि (api) - also; निदर्शनैः (nidarśanaiḥ) - by examples; by devices; च (ca) - and; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; कुण्डलेप्सुः (kuṇḍal-epsuḥ) - desiring earrings; पुरंदरः (puraṁdaraḥ) - Purandara; (Indra, king of gods);]
(By jewels, by women, likewise by enjoyments, by riches, also by many kinds, and by many examples, desiring earrings, Purandara (Indra, king of gods).)
Desiring earrings, Purandara (Indra) tried through jewels, women, enjoyments, riches of many kinds, and many other inducements to obtain them. (03-284-17)
यदि दास्यसि कर्ण त्वं सहजे कुण्डले शुभे। आयुषः प्रक्षयं गत्वा मृत्योर्वशमुपेष्यसि ॥०३-२८४-१८॥
yadi dāsyasi karṇa tvaṃ sahaje kuṇḍale śubhe। āyuṣaḥ prakṣayaṃ gatvā mṛtyor vaśam upeṣyasi॥03-284-18॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; दास्यसि (dāsyasi) - you will give; कर्ण (karṇa) - O Karṇa; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सहजे (sahaje) - innate; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; शुभे (śubhe) - auspicious; आयुषः (āyuṣaḥ) - of life; प्रक्षयं (prakṣayam) - loss; गत्वा (gatvā) - after going; मृत्योर् (mṛtyor) - of death; वशम् (vaśam) - control; उपेष्यसि (upeṣyasi) - you will come under;]
(If you will give, O Karṇa, your innate, auspicious earrings, after going to the loss of life, you will come under the control of death.)
If you, O Karṇa, give your innate auspicious earrings, after the loss of your life you will fall under the power of death. (03-284-18)
कवचेन च संयुक्तः कुण्डलाभ्यां च मानद। अवध्यस्त्वं रणेऽरीणामिति विद्धि वचो मम ॥०३-२८४-१९॥
kavacena ca saṃyuktaḥ kuṇḍalābhyāṃ ca mānada। avadhyas tvaṃ raṇe'rīṇām iti viddhi vaco mama ॥03-284-19॥

(By the armour and endowed with the two earrings and, O bestower of honour, invulnerable you (are) in battle to enemies — thus know (these) words of mine.)
Know, O bestower of honour, that being endowed with the armour and the two earrings, you are invulnerable to your enemies in battle. (03-284-19)
अमृतादुत्थितं ह्येतदुभयं रत्नसम्भवम्। तस्माद्रक्ष्यं त्वया कर्ण जीवितं चेत्प्रियं तव ॥०३-२८४-२०॥
amṛtād utthitaṃ hy etad ubhayaṃ ratna-sambhavam। tasmād rakṣyaṃ tvayā karṇa jīvitaṃ cet priyaṃ tava॥03-284-20॥
[अमृतात् (amṛtāt) - from nectar;, उत्थितम् (utthitam) - arisen;, हि (hi) - indeed;, एतत् (etat) - this;, उभयम् (ubhayam) - both;, रत्नसम्भवम् (ratna-sambhavam) - originated from gems;, तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore;, रक्ष्यम् (rakṣyam) - to be protected;, त्वया (tvayā) - by you;, कर्ण (karṇa) - Karna;, जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;, चेत् (cet) - if;, प्रियं (priyam) - dear;, तव (tava) - to you;]
(From nectar arisen indeed this both originated from gems. Therefore to be protected by you, Karna, life if dear to you.)
These two have both arisen from nectar and originated from gems. Therefore, Karna, if your life is dear to you, you should protect them. (03-284-20)

(Who to me thus you did speak, showing friendship supreme. Out of desire, O revered one, speak, who are you assuming the guise of a twice-born?)
Who are you, who have thus spoken to me, showing supreme friendship? Out of curiosity, O revered one, tell me, who are you assuming the guise of a Brāhmaṇa? (03-284-21)

अहं तात सहस्रांशुः सौहृदात्त्वां निदर्शये। कुरुष्वैतद्वचो मे त्वमेतच्छ्रेयः परं हि ते ॥०३-२८४-२२॥
ahaṁ tāta sahasrāṁśuḥ sauhṛdāttvāṁ nidarśaye. kuruṣvaitadvaco me tvametacchreyaḥ paraṁ hi te ॥03-284-22॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; तात (tāta) - O father; सहस्रांशुः (sahasrāṁśuḥ) - the thousand-rayed (epithet of the sun); सौहृदात् (sauhṛdāt) - from friendship; त्वां (tvām) - you; निदर्शये (nidarśaye) - I show; I indicate; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; perform; एतद् (etad) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; words; मे (me) - my; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एतत् (etat) - this; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - good; best; benefit; परम् (param) - supreme; highest; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; ते (te) - for you;]
(I, O father, (the) thousand-rayed (sun), from friendship, I show you. Do this speech of mine; you, this supreme benefit indeed (is) for you.)
O father, I, the thousand-rayed sun, out of friendship, am showing you (the way). Do what I say; for this is surely the greatest good for you. (03-284-22)

श्रेय एव ममात्यन्तं यस्य मे गोपतिः प्रभुः। प्रवक्ताद्य हितान्वेषी शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥०३-२८४-२३॥
śreya eva mamatyantaṃ yasya me gopatiḥ prabhuḥ। pravaktādya hitānveṣī śṛṇu cedaṃ vaco mama ॥03-284-23॥
[श्रेय (śreya) - betterment; एव (eva) - indeed; मम (mama) - for me; अत्यन्तं (atyantam) - completely; यस्य (yasya) - whose; मे (me) - to me; गोपतिः (gopatiḥ) - the lord of cows; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - master; प्रवक्ता (pravaktā) - someone who speaks; अद्य (adya) - today; हितान्वेषी (hitānveṣī) - seeker of welfare; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; मम (mama) - of me;]
(Indeed, the betterment completely for me—whose master is the lord of cows—today, a speaker, seeker of welfare, listen and this speech of mine.)
My complete welfare depends upon my master, the lord of cows. Being a well-wisher who speaks for your good, listen now to these my words. (03-284-23)
प्रसादये त्वां वरदं प्रणयाच्च ब्रवीम्यहम्। न निवार्यो व्रतादस्मादहं यद्यस्मि ते प्रियः ॥०३-२८४-२४॥
prasādaye tvāṃ varadaṃ praṇayācca bravīmyaham। na nivāryo vratādasmādahaṃ yadyasmi te priyaḥ॥03-284-24॥
[प्रसादये (prasādaye) - I propitiate; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; वरदम् (varadam) - bestower of boons; प्रणयात् (praṇayāt) - from affection; च (ca) - and; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; निवार्यः (nivāryaḥ) - to be deterred; व्रतात् (vratāt) - from vow; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; यदि (yadi) - if; अस्मि (asmi) - am; ते (te) - to you; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - beloved;]
(I propitiate you, the bestower of boons, and from affection I speak. Not to be deterred from this vow am I, if I am beloved to you.)
I entreat you, O bestower of boons, and I speak out of affection. If I am dear to you, do not deter me from this vow. (03-284-24)
व्रतं वै मम लोकोऽयं वेत्ति कृत्स्नो विभावसो। यथाहं द्विजमुख्येभ्यो दद्यां प्राणानपि ध्रुवम् ॥०३-२८४-२५॥
vrataṃ vai mama loko'yaṃ vetti kṛtsno vibhāvaso। yathāhaṃ dvijamukhyebhyo dadyāṃ prāṇān api dhruvam॥03-284-25॥
[व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; वै (vai) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; अयम् (ayam) - this; वेत्ति (vetti) - knows; कृत्स्नः (kṛtsnaḥ) - entire; विभावसः (vibhāvaso) - O Fire-god; यथा (yathā) - as; अहम् (aham) - I; द्विजमुख्येभ्यः (dvijamukhyebhyaḥ) - to the foremost of the twice-born; दद्याम् (dadyām) - I would give; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; अपि (api) - even; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly;]
(Vow indeed my this world knows entire O Fire-god, as I to the foremost of twice-born would give lives even certainly.)
O Fire-god, indeed, my vow is known to this entire world: that I would certainly give even my life to the foremost of the twice-born. (03-284-25)
यद्यागच्छति शक्रो मां ब्राह्मणच्छद्मनावृतः। हितार्थं पाण्डुपुत्राणां खेचरोत्तम भिक्षितुम् ॥०३-२८४-२६॥
yady āgacchati śakro māṃ brāhmaṇacchadmanā vṛtaḥ। hitārthaṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ khecarottama bhikṣitum ॥03-284-26॥
[यद्य् (yad) - if; आगच्छति (āgacchati) - comes; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; माम् (mām) - to me; ब्राह्मणच्छद्मना (brāhmaṇa-chadmanā) - in the disguise of a brāhmaṇa; आवृतः (āvṛtaḥ) - having covered (himself); हितार्थम् (hitārtham) - for the benefit; पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍu-putrāṇām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; खेचर-उत्तम (khecarottama) - O best among those moving in the sky; भिक्षितुम् (bhikṣitum) - to ask (alms);]
(If Indra comes to me, having covered himself with the disguise of a brāhmaṇa, for the benefit of the sons of Pāṇḍu, O best among the sky-goers, to ask (for alms).)
If Indra, disguised as a brāhmaṇa, comes to me, O best among those who move in the sky, to beg for the benefit of the sons of Pāṇḍu. (03-284-26)
दास्यामि विबुधश्रेष्ठ कुण्डले वर्म चोत्तमम्। न मे कीर्तिः प्रणश्येत त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुता ॥०३-२८४-२७॥
dāsyāmi vibudhaśreṣṭha kuṇḍale varma cottamam। na me kīrtiḥ praṇaśyet triṣu lokeṣu viśrutā ॥03-284-27॥
[दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I shall give; विबुधश्रेष्ठ (vibudhaśreṣṭha) - O best of the gods; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; वर्म (varma) - armor; च (ca) - and; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; प्रणश्येत (praṇaśyet) - should perish; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुता (viśrutā) - renowned;]
(I shall give, O best of the gods, the earrings and excellent armor; may not my fame, renowned in the three worlds, perish.)
O best of the gods, I shall give the earrings and the excellent armor; let not my fame, renowned in the three worlds, be lost. (03-284-27)
मद्विधस्यायशस्यं हि न युक्तं प्राणरक्षणम्। युक्तं हि यशसा युक्तं मरणं लोकसंमतम् ॥०३-२८४-२८॥
mad-vidhasya ayaśasyaṃ hi na yuktaṃ prāṇa-rakṣaṇam। yuktaṃ hi yaśasā yuktaṃ maraṇaṃ loka-saṃmatam॥03-284-28॥
[मद्विधस्य (mad-vidhasya) - of one like me; अयशस्यं (ayaśasyam) - inglorious; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; युक्तं (yuktam) - proper; प्राणरक्षणम् (prāṇa-rakṣaṇam) - preserving life; युक्तं (yuktam) - proper; हि (hi) - indeed; यशसा (yaśasā) - with honor; युक्तं (yuktam) - proper; मरणं (maraṇam) - death; लोकसंमतम् (loka-saṃmatam) - approved by people;]
(Indeed, for one like me, inglorious preservation of life is not proper. Indeed, death with honor is proper, approved by people.)
For one like me, preserving life without honor is not appropriate. Indeed, an honorable death is proper and approved by the people. (03-284-28)
सोऽहमिन्द्राय दास्यामि कुण्डले सह वर्मणा। यदि मां बलवृत्रघ्नो भिक्षार्थमुपयास्यति ॥०३-२८४-२९॥
so'ham indrāya dāsyāmi kuṇḍale saha varmaṇā। yadi māṃ balavṛtraghno bhikṣārtham upayāsyati ॥03-284-29॥
[सः (सो) (saḥ (so)) - he; (thus; so;) अहम् (aham) - I; इन्द्राय (indrāya) - to Indra; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I shall give; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; सह (saha) - together with; वर्मणा (varmaṇā) - with the armor; यदि (yadi) - if; माम् (mām) - me; बलवृत्रघ्नः (balavṛtraghnaḥ) - the slayer of Bali and Vṛtra (Indra); भिक्षार्थम् (bhikṣārtham) - for the sake of begging; उपयास्यति (upayāsyati) - comes near;]
(He, I to Indra I shall give earrings together with the armor; if me the slayer of Bali and Vṛtra for the sake of begging comes near.)
So I shall give the earrings together with the armor to Indra, if the slayer of Bali and Vṛtra comes to me in order to beg. (03-284-29)
हितार्थं पाण्डुपुत्राणां कुण्डले मे प्रयाचितुम्। तन्मे कीर्तिकरं लोके तस्याकीर्तिर्भविष्यति ॥०३-२८४-३०॥
hitārthaṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ kuṇḍale me prayācitum। tanme kīrtikaraṃ loke tasyākīrtirbhaviṣyati॥03-284-30॥
[हितार्थं (hitārtham) - for the welfare; पाण्डुपुत्राणां (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - the earrings; मे (me) - for me; प्रयाचितुम् (prayācitum) - to ask; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - for me; कीर्तिकरं (kīrtikaram) - producing fame; लोके (loke) - in the world; तस्य (tasya) - for him; अकीर्तिः (akīrtiḥ) - ill-fame; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(For the welfare of the sons of Pāṇḍu, to ask for the earrings for me—that for me will produce fame in the world, for him ill-fame will be.)
To ask for the earrings for my sake, for the welfare of the sons of Pāṇḍu, will bring fame to me in the world, but will bring ill-fame to him. (03-284-30)
वृणोमि कीर्तिं लोके हि जीवितेनापि भानुमन्। कीर्तिमानश्नुते स्वर्गं हीनकीर्तिस्तु नश्यति ॥०३-२८४-३१॥
vṛṇomi kīrtiṃ loke hi jīvitenāpi bhānuman। kīrtimānaśnute svargaṃ hīnakīrtistu naśyati ॥03-284-31॥
[वृणोमि (vṛṇomi) - I choose; कीर्तिं (kīrtiṃ) - fame; लोके (loke) - in the world; हि (hi) - indeed; जीवितेनापि (jīvitenāpi) - even with life; भानुमन् (bhānuman) - O Bhānuman; कीर्तिमान् (kīrtimān) - the one who has fame; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains; स्वर्गं (svargaṃ) - heaven; हीनकीर्तिः (hīnakīrtiḥ) - one lacking fame; तु (tu) - but; नश्यति (naśyati) - perishes;]
(I choose fame in the world indeed, O Bhānuman, even with life. The one who has fame attains heaven; but one lacking fame perishes.)
I choose fame in this world, O Bhānuman, even at the cost of life itself. The one who is famous attains heaven; but one without fame perishes. (03-284-31)
कीर्तिर्हि पुरुषं लोके सञ्जीवयति मातृवत्। अकीर्तिर्जीवितं हन्ति जीवतोऽपि शरीरिणः ॥०३-२८४-३२॥
kīrtir hi puruṣaṃ loke sañjīvayati mātṛvat। akīrtir jīvitaṃ hanti jīvato'pi śarīriṇaḥ॥03-284-32॥
[कीर्ति (kīrtiḥ) - fame; reputation; हि (hi) - indeed; truly; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - person (accusative singular); लोके (loke) - in the world; in society; सञ्जीवयति (sañjīvayati) - revives; gives life; मातृवत् (mātṛvat) - like a mother; अकीर्ति (akīrtiḥ) - infamy; disgrace; जीवितं (jīvitam) - life; हन्ति (hanti) - destroys; kills; जीवत: (jīvataḥ) - of living; अपि (api) - even; शरीरिणः (śarīriṇaḥ) - of the embodied (person);]
(Fame indeed person in the world revives like a mother; infamy life destroys of living even of the embodied.)
Indeed, fame gives new life to a person in the world just as a mother does; but infamy destroys the life of even a living person. (03-284-32)
अयं पुराणः श्लोको हि स्वयं गीतो विभावसो। धात्रा लोकेश्वर यथा कीर्तिरायुर्नरस्य वै ॥०३-२८४-३३॥
ayaṃ purāṇaḥ śloko hi svayaṃ gīto vibhāvaso. dhātrā lokeśvara yathā kīrtirāyurnarāsya vai ॥03-284-33॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; पुराणः (purāṇaḥ) - ancient; श्लोकः (ślokaḥ) - verse; हि (hi) - indeed; स्वयं (svayaṃ) - by himself; गीतः (gītaḥ) - uttered; विभावसो (vibhāvaso) - by Agni; धात्रा (dhātrā) - by the Creator; लोकेश्वर (lokeśvara) - O lord of the world; यथा (yathā) - just as; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; आयुः (āyuḥ) - lifespan; नरस्य (narasya) - of a man; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(This ancient verse indeed was uttered by Agni himself, O lord of the world, by the Creator, just as fame and lifespan of a man indeed.)
O lord of the world, this ancient verse was indeed uttered by Agni himself and by the Creator, just as fame and lifespan (are fixed) for a man. (03-284-33)
पुरुषस्य परे लोके कीर्तिरेव परायणम्। इह लोके विशुद्धा च कीर्तिरायुर्विवर्धनी ॥०३-२८४-३४॥
puruṣasya pare loke kīrtiḥ eva parāyaṇam। iha loke viśuddhā ca kīrtiḥ āyuḥ vivardhanī ॥03-284-34॥
[पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a man; परे (pare) - in the next; लोके (loke) - world; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; एव (eva) - indeed; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - the highest goal; इह (iha) - here; लोके (loke) - in this world; विशुद्धा (viśuddhā) - pure; च (ca) - and; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; आयुः (āyuḥ) - lifespan; विवर्धनी (vivardhanī) - that which increases;]
(Of a man, in the next world, fame indeed is the highest goal. Here, in this world, pure and fame and (that) fame increases lifespan.)
For a man, fame alone is the highest goal in the next world; in this world, pure fame increases the lifespan. (03-284-34)
सोऽहं शरीरजे दत्त्वा कीर्तिं प्राप्स्यामि शाश्वतीम्। दत्त्वा च विधिवद्दानं ब्राह्मणेभ्यो यथाविधि ॥०३-२८४-३५॥
so'haṃ śarīraje dattvā kīrtiṃ prāpsyāmi śāśvatīm। dattvā ca vidhivad-dānaṃ brāhmaṇebhyo yathāvidhi ॥03-284-35॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; (but here, with 'aham', as 'I'; अहम् (aham) - I; (first person singular pronoun); शरीरजे (śarīraje) - born of the body; (by bodily progeny or offspring); दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; (gerund of 'dā', to give); कीर्तिम् (kīrtim) - fame; (accusative singular); प्राप्स्यामि (prāpsyāmi) - I shall attain; (future tense, first person singular of 'prāp', to obtain); शाश्वतीम् (śāśvatīm) - eternal; perpetual; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; (gerund of 'dā', to give); च (ca) - and; also; moreover; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; properly; दानम् (dānam) - gift; donation; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; (dative plural); यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to prescription; as (is) proper by rule;]
(He, I, having given the bodily-born (i.e., offspring), I shall attain eternal fame; and having given donation properly to the Brāhmaṇas as is prescribed by rule.)
Thus, after giving away what is born of my body (my offspring), I shall gain everlasting fame; and after properly giving donations to the Brāhmaṇas as prescribed by rule. (03-284-35)
हुत्वा शरीरं सङ्ग्रामे कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम्। विजित्य वा परानाजौ यशः प्राप्स्यामि केवलम् ॥०३-२८४-३६॥
hutvā śarīraṃ saṅgrāme kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram। vijitya vā parān-ājau yaśaḥ prāpsyāmi kevalam ॥03-284-36॥
[हुत्वा (hutvā) - having offered; शरीरं (śarīram) - body; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; कर्म (karma) - action; सुदुष्करम् (suduṣkaram) - very difficult; विजित्य (vijitya) - having conquered; वा (vā) - or; परान् (parān) - enemies; आजौ (ājau) - in the field (of battle); यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; प्राप्स्यामि (prāpsyāmi) - I shall obtain; केवलम् (kevalam) - alone;]
(Having offered the body in battle, having performed action very difficult, or having conquered the enemies in the field, I shall obtain fame alone.)
Having offered my body in battle and performed an exceedingly difficult deed, or having conquered the enemies on the battlefield, I will attain only fame. (03-284-36)
भीतानामभयं दत्त्वा सङ्ग्रामे जीवितार्थिनाम्। वृद्धान्बालान्द्विजातींश्च मोक्षयित्वा महाभयात् ॥०३-२८४-३७॥
bhītānām abhayaṃ dattvā saṅgrāme jīvitārthinām। vṛddhān bālān dvijātīn ca mokṣayitvā mahābhayāt॥03-284-37॥
[भीतानाम् (bhītānām) - of the frightened; अभयम् (abhayam) - fearlessness; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; जीवितार्थिनाम् (jīvitārthinām) - to those desiring life; वृद्धान् (vṛddhān) - the aged; बालान् (bālān) - children; द्विजातीन् (dvijātīn) - the twice-born; च (ca) - and; मोक्षयित्वा (mokṣayitvā) - having released; महाभयात् (mahābhayāt) - from great danger;]
(Of the frightened, fearlessness having given, in battle, to those desiring life, the aged, children, and the twice-born and, having released from great danger.)
Having granted fearlessness to the frightened in battle to those seeking life, and having delivered the aged, children, and the twice-born from great danger. (03-284-37)
प्राप्स्यामि परमं लोके यशः स्वर्भानुसूदन। जीवितेनापि मे रक्ष्या कीर्तिस्तद्विद्धि मे व्रतम् ॥०३-२८४-३८॥
prāpsyāmi paramaṃ loke yaśaḥ svarbhānu-sūdana। jīvitena api me rakṣyā kīrtiḥ tad viddhi me vratam ॥03-284-38॥
[प्राप्स्यामि (prāpsyāmi) - I shall attain; परमं (paramam) - supreme; लोके (loke) - in the world; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; स्वर्भानुसूदन (svarbhānu-sūdana) - O destroyer of Svarbhānu; जीवितेनापि (jīvitena api) - even by life; मे (me) - my; रक्ष्या (rakṣyā) - should be protected; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; तद् (tad) - that; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; मे (me) - my; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow;]
(I shall attain supreme fame in the world, O destroyer of Svarbhānu. Even by my life, my fame should be protected; that, know, is my vow.)
O destroyer of Svarbhānu, I shall gain the highest fame in the world. Even at the cost of my life, I must protect my fame; know that this is my vow. (03-284-38)
सोऽहं दत्त्वा मघवते भिक्षामेतामनुत्तमाम्। ब्राह्मणच्छद्मिने देव लोके गन्ता परां गतिम् ॥०३-२८४-३९॥
so'ham dattvā maghavate bhikṣām etām anuttamām। brāhmaṇacchadmine deva loke gantā parāṃ gatim॥03-284-39॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; मघवते (maghavate) - to Maghavan (Indra); भिक्षाम् (bhikṣām) - alms; एताम् (etām) - this; अनुत्तमाम् (anuttamām) - unsurpassed; ब्राह्मणच्छद्मिने (brāhmaṇacchadmine) - to one disguised as a brāhmaṇa; देव (deva) - O god; लोके (loke) - in the world; गन्ता (gantā) - I shall go; पराम् (parām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - path;]
(He I, having given to Maghavan this unsurpassed alms to one disguised as a brāhmaṇa, O god, in the world shall go to the supreme path.)
O god, having given these unsurpassed alms to Maghavan, who was disguised as a brāhmaṇa, I shall go to the supreme path in the world. (03-284-39)
