The Sun said.
माहितं कर्ण कार्षीस्त्वमात्मनः सुहृदां तथा। पुत्राणामथ भार्याणामथो मातुरथो पितुः ॥०३-२८५-१॥
māhitaṃ karṇa kārṣīs tvam ātmanaḥ suhṛdāṃ tathā. putrāṇām atha bhāryāṇām atho mātur atho pituḥ ॥03-285-1॥
[माहितं (māhitaṃ) - honored; respected; कर्ण (karṇa) - O Karṇa; कार्षीः (kārṣīḥ) - you have done; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - for yourself; सुहृदां (suhṛdām) - of friends; तथा (tathā) - also; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of sons; अथ (atha) - and; भार्याणाम् (bhāryāṇām) - of wives; अथो (atho) - and also; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of mother; अथो (atho) - and also; पितुः (pituḥ) - of father;]
(Honored, O Karṇa, you have done for yourself, of friends also, of sons, and of wives, and also of mother, and also of father.)
O Karṇa, you have acted in a way that is honorable for yourself, your friends, your sons, your wives, your mother, and your father. (03-285-1)
शरीरस्याविरोधेन प्राणिनां प्राणभृद्वर। इष्यते यशसः प्राप्तिः कीर्तिश्च त्रिदिवे स्थिरा ॥०३-२८५-२॥
śarīrasyāvirodhena prāṇināṃ prāṇabhṛdvara। iṣyate yaśasaḥ prāptiḥ kīrtiś ca tridive sthirā॥03-285-2॥
[शरीरस्याविरोधेन (śarīrasya avirodhena) - by non-opposition to the body; प्राणिनां (prāṇinām) - of living beings; प्राणभृद्वर (prāṇabhṛd-vara) - O best among the living; इष्यते (iṣyate) - is desired; यशसः (yaśasaḥ) - of fame; प्राप्तिः (prāptiḥ) - attainment; कीर्तिश्च (kīrtiḥ ca) - and glory; त्रिदिवे (tridive) - in heaven; स्थिरा (sthirā) - steady;]
(By non-opposition to the body, O best among the living, is desired attainment of fame and steady glory in heaven.)
O best of beings, by preserving the well-being of the body, the attainment of fame and lasting glory in heaven is sought. (03-285-2)
यस्त्वं प्राणविरोधेन कीर्तिमिच्छसि शाश्वतीम्। सा ते प्राणान्समादाय गमिष्यति न संशयः ॥०३-२८५-३॥
yas tvaṃ prāṇa-virodhena kīrtim icchasi śāśvatīm। sā te prāṇān samādāya gamiṣyati na saṃśayaḥ॥03-285-3॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्राण-विरोधेन (prāṇa-virodhena) - by opposition to life; (by risking your life;) कीर्तिम् (kīrtim) - fame; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; शाश्वतीम् (śāśvatīm) - eternal; सा (sā) - she; ते (te) - your; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; समादाय (samādāya) - having taken away; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will depart; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Who you, by opposition to life, eternal fame you desire; she your life-breaths having taken away will depart, not doubt.)
Who you are, if you desire eternal fame by risking your life, that (fame) will depart having taken away your life—there is no doubt about it. (03-285-3)
जीवतां कुरुते कार्यं पिता माता सुतास्तथा। ये चान्ये बान्धवाः केचिल्लोकेऽस्मिन्पुरुषर्षभ ॥ राजानश्च नरव्याघ्र पौरुषेण निबोध तत् ॥०३-२८५-४॥
jīvatāṃ kurute kāryaṃ pitā mātā sutās tathā। ye ca anye bāndhavāḥ kecid loke'smin puruṣarṣabha॥ rājānaś ca naravyāghra pauruṣeṇa nibodha tat॥03-285-4॥
[जीवतां (jīvatām) - of living beings; कुरुते (kurute) - performs; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; पिता (pitā) - father; माता (mātā) - mother; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; तथा (tathā) - so also; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives; केचित् (kecit) - some; लोकेऽस्मिन् (loke'smin) - in this world; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; च (ca) - and; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; पौरुषेण (pauruṣeṇa) - by manliness; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Of living beings, action is performed by the father, mother, sons, so also those who are other relatives, some (such) in this world, O best of men. Kings also, O tiger among men, by manliness, understand that.)
O best of men, in this world, the father, mother, sons, and other relatives perform actions for living beings, as do some others. O tiger among men, understand that kings also act through their own manliness. (03-285-4)
कीर्तिश्च जीवतः साध्वी पुरुषस्य महाद्युते। मृतस्य कीर्त्या किं कार्यं भस्मीभूतस्य देहिनः ॥ मृतः कीर्तिं न जानाति जीवन्कीर्तिं समश्नुते ॥०३-२८५-५॥
kīrtiś ca jīvataḥ sādhvī puruṣasya mahādyute. mṛtasya kīrtyā kiṃ kāryaṃ bhasmībhūtasya dehinaḥ ॥ mṛtaḥ kīrtiṃ na jānāti jīvankīrtiṃ samaśnute ॥03-285-5॥
[कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - glory; च (ca) - and; जीवतः (jīvataḥ) - of the living; साध्वी (sādhvī) - virtuous; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a man; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - of great brilliance; मृतस्य (mṛtasya) - of the dead; कीर्त्या (kīrtyā) - by glory; किं (kiṃ) - what; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - purpose; भस्मीभूतस्य (bhasmībhūtasya) - of one become ashes; देहिनः (dehinaḥ) - of the embodied; मृतः (mṛtaḥ) - the dead; कीर्तिं (kīrtiṃ) - glory; न (na) - not; जानाति (jānāti) - knows; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; कीर्तिं (kīrtiṃ) - glory; समश्नुते (samaśnute) - enjoys;]
(Glory and of the living, virtuous, of a man, of great brilliance. Of the dead by glory, what purpose is there for one whose body has become ashes? The dead does not know glory; living enjoys glory. (03-285-5))
Glory belongs to the virtuous living man of great brilliance. What use is glory to the dead, whose body is reduced to ashes? The dead do not know glory; it is the living who enjoy glory. (03-285-5)
मृतस्य कीर्तिर्मर्त्यस्य यथा माला गतायुषः। अहं तु त्वां ब्रवीम्येतद्भक्तोऽसीति हितेप्सया ॥०३-२८५-६॥
mṛtasya kīrtir martyasya yathā mālā gatāyuṣaḥ। ahaṃ tu tvāṃ bravīmy etad bhakto'sīti hitepsayā॥03-285-6॥
[मृतस्य (mṛtasya) - of the dead; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; मर्त्यस्य (martyasya) - of the mortal; यथा (yathā) - just as; माला (mālā) - garland; गतायुषः (gatāyuṣaḥ) - of one whose life is gone; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; तु (tu) - but; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - say; एतत् (etad) - this; भक्तः (bhaktaḥ) - devotee; असि (asi) - are; इति (iti) - thus; हितेप्सया (hitepsayā) - with the desire for your welfare;]
(Of the dead, fame of the mortal just as garland of one whose life is gone; I but to you say this, "You are a devotee" thus, with the desire for your welfare. (03-285-6))
Fame is for the dead, just as a garland for one whose life has departed; but I say this to you, "You are a devotee," with the desire for your welfare. (03-285-6)
भक्तिमन्तो हि मे रक्ष्या इत्येतेनापि हेतुना। भक्तोऽयं परया भक्त्या मामित्येव महाभुज ॥ ममापि भक्तिरुत्पन्ना स त्वं कुरु वचो मम ॥०३-२८५-७॥
bhaktimanto hi me rakṣyā ityetena api hetunā। bhakto'yaṁ parayā bhaktyā mām ity eva mahābhuja ॥ mamāpi bhaktir utpannā sa tvaṁ kuru vaco mama ॥03-285-7॥
[भक्तिमन्तः (bhaktimantaḥ) - devoted ones; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; रक्ष्याः (rakṣyāḥ) - ought to be protected; इति (iti) - thus; एतेन (etena) - by this; अपि (api) - also; हेतुना (hetunā) - by reason; भक्तः (bhaktaḥ) - a devotee; अयम् (ayam) - this; परया (parayā) - by supreme; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - devotion; माम् (mām) - me; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - only; महाभुज (mahābhuja) - O mighty-armed; मम (mama) - my; अपि (api) - also; भक्तिः (bhaktiḥ) - devotion; उत्पन्ना (utpannā) - arisen; सः (saḥ) - he; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कुरु (kuru) - do; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; मम (mama) - my;]
(Devoted ones indeed to me ought to be protected, thus by this also reason; this devotee by supreme devotion me thus only, O mighty-armed. My also devotion arisen, he you do word my.)
Indeed, those devoted to me should be protected, and for this very reason also; this devotee, by his supreme devotion, regards me thus, O mighty-armed. My own devotion has arisen too—so you, do my word. (03-285-7)
अस्ति चात्र परं किञ्चिदध्यात्मं देवनिर्मितम्। अतश्च त्वां ब्रवीम्येतत्क्रियतामविशङ्कया ॥०३-२८५-८॥
asti cātra paraṃ kiñcid adhyātmaṃ deva-nirmitam। ataśca tvāṃ bravīmy etat kriyatām aviśaṅkayā॥03-285-8॥
[अस्ति (asti) - there is; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; परम् (param) - supreme; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a certain; अध्यात्मम् (adhyātmam) - spiritual knowledge; देवनिर्मितम् (deva-nirmitam) - created by the gods; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; च (ca) - and; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; एतत् (etat) - this; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; अविशङ्कया (aviśaṅkayā) - without doubt;]
(There is and here supreme certain spiritual knowledge created by the gods. Therefore and to you I say this, let it be done without doubt.)
There is, here, a certain supreme spiritual knowledge created by the gods. Therefore, I say this to you: let it be done without doubt. (03-285-8)
देवगुह्यं त्वया ज्ञातुं न शक्यं पुरुषर्षभ। तस्मान्नाख्यामि ते गुह्यं काले वेत्स्यति तद्भवान् ॥०३-२८५-९॥
devaguhyaṃ tvayā jñātuṃ na śakyaṃ puruṣarṣabha। tasmānnākhyāmi te guhyaṃ kāle vetsyati tadbhavān ॥03-285-9॥
[देवगुह्यं (devaguhyaṃ) - divine secret; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; ज्ञातुं (jñātuṃ) - to know; न (na) - not; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best among men; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; न (na) - not; आख्यामि (ākhyāmi) - I tell; ते (te) - to you; गुह्यं (guhyaṃ) - secret; काले (kāle) - in time; वेत्स्यति (vetsyati) - (he) will know; तत् (tat) - that; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
(Divine secret by you to know not possible O best among men; therefore not I tell to you secret; in time will know that you.)
O best among men, it is not possible for you to know the divine secret; therefore I do not tell you the secret— in time, you will know it. (03-285-9)
पुनरुक्तं च वक्ष्यामि त्वं राधेय निबोध तत्। मास्मै ते कुण्डले दद्या भिक्षवे वज्रपाणये ॥०३-२८५-१०॥
punaruktaṃ ca vakṣyāmi tvaṃ rādheya nibodha tat। māsmai te kuṇḍale dadyā bhikṣave vajrapāṇaye॥03-285-10॥
[पुनरुक्तं (punaruktaṃ) - repeated; again uttered; च (ca) - and; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall say; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; राधेय (rādheya) - O son of Radha; निबोध (nibodha) - listen; तत् (tat) - that; मा (mā) - do not; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; ते (te) - your; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; दद्या (dadyā) - give; भिक्षवे (bhikṣave) - to the beggar; वज्रपाणये (vajrapāṇaye) - to Vajrapāṇi (Indra, who wields the thunderbolt);]
(Repeatedly also I shall say, you, O son of Radha, listen that. Do not to him your earrings give to the beggar Vajrapāṇi.)
I will state it again, O son of Radha, listen now: do not give your earrings to that beggar, Vajrapāṇi (Indra). (03-285-10)
शोभसे कुण्डलाभ्यां हि रुचिराभ्यां महाद्युते। विशाखयोर्मध्यगतः शशीव विमलो दिवि ॥०३-२८५-११॥
śobhase kuṇḍalābhyāṃ hi rucirābhyāṃ mahādyute। viśākhayor madhyagataḥ śaśīva vimalo divi ॥03-285-11॥
[शोभसे (śobhase) - you shine; कुण्डलाभ्यां (kuṇḍalābhyām) - by two earrings; हि (hi) - indeed; रुचिराभ्यां (rucirābhyām) - resplendent; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant one; विशाखयोः (viśākhayoḥ) - of the two stars Viśākhā; मध्यगतः (madhyagataḥ) - placed in the midst; शशीव (śaśīva) - like the moon; विमलः (vimalaḥ) - pure; दिवि (divi) - in the sky;]
(You shine, indeed, by two earrings, resplendent, O greatly radiant one, like the pure moon placed amidst the two Viśākhā stars in the sky.)
You shine resplendently with your two beautiful earrings, O greatly radiant one, just as the pure moon appears in the sky between the two Viśākhā stars. (03-285-11)
कीर्तिश्च जीवतः साध्वी पुरुषस्येति विद्धि तत्। प्रत्याख्येयस्त्वया तात कुण्डलार्थे पुरंदरः ॥०३-२८५-१२॥
kīrtiś ca jīvataḥ sādhvī puruṣasyeti viddhi tat। pratyākhyeyas tvayā tāta kuṇḍalārthe puraṁdaraḥ ॥03-285-12॥
[कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; च (ca) - and; जीवतः (jīvataḥ) - of the living; साध्वी (sādhvī) - noble; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a man; इति (iti) - thus; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; तत् (tat) - that; प्रत्याख्येयः (pratyākhyeyaḥ) - to be refused; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तात (tāta) - O dear one; कुण्डलार्थे (kuṇḍalārthe) - for the sake of earrings; पुरंदरः (puraṁdaraḥ) - Indra;]
(Fame and, of the living, noble, of a man—thus, know, that. To be refused, by you, O dear one, for the sake of earrings, Indra.)
Know that fame, noble for a living man, O dear one—that should be protected. Indra (Purandara) is to be refused by you, even if it is for the sake of earrings. (03-285-12)
शक्या बहुविधैर्वाक्यैः कुण्डलेप्सा त्वयानघ। विहन्तुं देवराजस्य हेतुयुक्तैः पुनः पुनः ॥०३-२८५-१३॥
śakyā bahuvidhair vākyaiḥ kuṇḍal-epsā tvayānagha। vihuṃtuṃ devarājasya hetuyuktaiḥ punaḥ punaḥ ॥03-285-13॥
[शक्या (śakyā) - able; possible; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - by many kinds; वाक्यैः (vākyaiḥ) - by statements; कुण्डलेप्सा (kuṇḍal-epsā) - desire for earrings; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; विहन्तुं (vihantuṃ) - to frustrate; to thwart; देवराजस्य (devarājasya) - of the king of the gods; हेतुयुक्तैः (hetuyuktaiḥ) - endowed with reasons; reasoned; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(Able by many kinds of statements, the desire for the earrings by you, O sinless one, to frustrate the king of the gods (is) with reasoned (arguments), again and again.)
O sinless one, by many kinds of reasoned statements, it is possible again and again for you to thwart the king of the gods regarding the desire for the earrings. (03-285-13)
उपपत्त्युपपन्नार्थैर्माधुर्यकृतभूषणैः। पुरंदरस्य कर्ण त्वं बुद्धिमेतामपानुद ॥०३-२८५-१४॥
upapattyupapannārthairmādhuryakṛtabhūṣaṇaiḥ। puraṃdarasya karṇa tvaṃ buddhimetām apānuda ॥03-285-14॥
[उपपत्ति-उपपन्न-अर्थैः (upapatti-upapanna-arthaiḥ) - with meanings arising from proper reasoning; माधुर्य-कृत-भूषणैः (mādhurya-kṛta-bhūṣaṇaiḥ) - having sweetness as their adornment; पुरंदरस्य (puraṃdarasya) - of Purandara (Indra); कर्ण (karṇa) - O Karṇa; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; बुद्धिम्-एताम् (buddhim-etām) - this intellect; अपानुद (apānuda) - dispel;]
(With meanings arising from proper reasoning, endowed with the ornament of sweetness, O Karṇa, you dispel this intellect of Purandara.)
O Karṇa, with words whose meanings are founded on reasoning and adorned with sweetness, you dispel this intellect of Purandara. (03-285-14)
त्व हि नित्यं नरव्याघ्र स्पर्धसे सव्यसाचिना। सव्यसाची त्वया चैव युधि शूरः समेष्यति ॥०३-२८५-१५॥
tva hi nityaṃ naravyāghra spardhase savyasācinā। savyasācī tvayā caiva yudhi śūraḥ sameṣyati ॥03-285-15॥
[त्व (tva) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; स्पर्धसे (spardhase) - you rival; सव्यसाचिना (savyasācinā) - with Savyasācin (Arjuna); सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - Savyasācin (Arjuna); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; शूरः (śūraḥ) - hero; समेष्यति (sameṣyati) - will meet (you);]
(You indeed always, tiger among men, rival with Savyasācin; Savyasācin indeed by you and in battle the hero will meet.)
For you always, O tiger among men, contend with Savyasācin (Arjuna); and Savyasācin too will certainly meet you as a hero in battle. (03-285-15)
न तु त्वामर्जुनः शक्तः कुण्डलाभ्यां समन्वितम्। विजेतुं युधि यद्यस्य स्वयमिन्द्रः शरो भवेत् ॥०३-२८५-१६॥
na tu tvām arjunaḥ śaktaḥ kuṇḍalābhyāṃ samanvitam। vijetuṃ yudhi yady asya svayam indraḥ śaro bhavet॥03-285-16॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; कुण्डलाभ्यां (kuṇḍalābhyām) - with the (two) earrings; समन्वितम् (samanvitam) - endowed; विजेतुम् (vijetuṃ) - to conquer; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; यदि (yadi) - if; अस्य (asya) - of him; स्वयम् (svayam) - personal(ly); इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; शरः (śaraḥ) - arrow; भवेत् (bhavet) - were to be;]
(But not you Arjuna capable with earrings endowed to conquer in battle, if of him personally Indra arrow were to be.)
But Arjuna is not capable of conquering you, endowed with earrings, in battle—even if his arrow were Indra himself. (03-285-16)
तस्मान्न देये शक्राय त्वयैते कुण्डले शुभे। सङ्ग्रामे यदि निर्जेतुं कर्ण कामयसेऽर्जुनम् ॥०३-२८५-१७॥
tasmān na deye śakrāya tvayā ete kuṇḍale śubhe. saṅgrāme yadi nirjetuṃ karṇa kāmayase 'rjunam ॥03-285-17॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; न (na) - not; देये (deye) - should (they) be given; शक्राय (śakrāya) - to Śakra (Indra); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; एते (ete) - these; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; यदि (yadi) - if; निर्जेतुम् (nirjetum) - to conquer; कर्ण (karṇa) - Karṇa; कामयसे (kāmayase) - you desire; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna;]
(Therefore, not should be given to Śakra by you these earrings, O auspicious one. In battle, if to conquer Karṇa you desire Arjuna.)
Therefore, O auspicious one, you should not give these earrings to Śakra if you desire Arjuna to conquer Karṇa in battle. (03-285-17)
