एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु धृतराष्ट्रस्य वै सखा। सूतोऽधिरथ इत्येव सदारो जाह्नवीं ययौ ॥०३-२९३-१॥
etasmínneva kāle tu dhṛtarāṣṭrasya vai sakhā। sūto'dhiratha ityeva sadāro jāhnavīṃ yayau ॥03-293-1॥

(In this very time indeed, but, the friend of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the charioteer Adhiratha, indeed thus, with his wife, went to the Jāhnavī.)
But at that very time, Adhiratha the charioteer, friend of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, indeed went to the Jāhnavī river with his wife. (03-293-1)
तस्य भार्याभवद्राजन्रूपेणासदृशी भुवि। राधा नाम महाभागा न सा पुत्रमविन्दत ॥ अपत्यार्थे परं यत्नमकरोच्च विशेषतः ॥०३-२९३-२॥
tasya bhāryābhavad rājan rūpeṇāsadṛśī bhuvi। rādhā nāma mahābhāgā na sā putram avindata॥ apatyārthe paraṃ yatnam akaroc ca viśeṣataḥ॥03-293-2॥

(His wife became, O king, on earth unequaled in beauty; Rādhā by name, highly fortunate, she did not obtain a son. For the sake of offspring, special effort she made, and especially so.)
His wife, O king, was Rādhā, who was unrivaled in beauty on earth and highly fortunate, but she did not have a son. She made considerable effort, especially, for the sake of having a child. (03-293-2)
सा ददर्शाथ मञ्जूषामुह्यमानां यदृच्छया। दत्तरक्षाप्रतिसरामन्वालभनशोभिताम् ॥ ऊर्मीतरङ्गैर्जाह्नव्याः समानीतामुपह्वरम् ॥०३-२९३-३॥
sā dadarśātha mañjūṣām uhyamānāṃ yadṛcchayā. datta-rakṣā-pratisārām anva-ālambana-śobhitām ॥ ūrmī-taraṅgaiḥ jāhnavyāḥ samānītām upahvaram ॥03-293-3॥
[सा (sā) (sā) - she; ददर्शाथ (dadarśātha) (dadarśātha) - saw, then; मञ्जूषाम् (mañjūṣām) (mañjūṣām) - box; उह्यमानां (uhyamānām) (uhyamānām) - being carried; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; दत्तरक्षा (datta-rakṣā) (datta-rakṣā) - given protective amulet; प्रतिसराम् (pratisārām) (pratisārām) - bracelet; अन्वालभन (anva-ālambana) (anva-ālambana) - following support; शोभिताम् (śobhitām) (śobhitām) - adorned; ऊर्मीतरङ्गैः (ūrmī-taraṅgaiḥ) (ūrmī-taraṅgaiḥ) - by wave-currents; जाह्नव्याः (jāhnavyāḥ) (jāhnavyāḥ) - of the Jāhnavī (Ganges); समानीताम् (samānītām) (samānītām) - brought (there); उपह्वरम् (upahvaram) (upahvaram) - to the shore;]
(She then saw a box being carried by chance, adorned with a given protective amulet, bracelet, and following support. Brought to the shore by the wave-currents of the Jāhnavī (Ganges).)
She then saw a box that, carried by the waves of the Ganges, had been brought to the bank by chance, adorned with a protective amulet, bracelet, and other ornaments. (03-293-3)
सा तां कौतूहलात्प्राप्तां ग्राहयामास भामिनी। ततो निवेदयामास सूतस्याधिरथस्य वै ॥०३-२९३-४॥
sā tāṃ kautūhalāt-prāptāṃ grāhayām āsa bhāminī. tato nivedayām āsa sūtasya adhirathasya vai ॥03-293-4॥
[सा (sā) - she; तां (tāṃ) - her; कौतूहलात्-प्राप्तां (kautūhalāt-prāptāṃ) - arrived from curiosity; ग्राहयाम्-आस (grāhayām āsa) - caused to be understood; भामिनी (bhāminī) - the radiant one; ततः (tataḥ) - then; निवेदयाम्-आस (nivedayām āsa) - caused to report; सूतस्य-अधिरथस्य (sūtasya-adhirathasya) - of Sūta Adhiratha; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(She, having come by curiosity, the radiant one caused her to be understood. Then she caused to be reported indeed to Sūta Adhiratha.)
She, driven by curiosity, had her presented to the radiant one, and then she caused it to be reported to Sūta Adhiratha. (03-293-4)
स तामुद्धृत्य मञ्जूषामुत्सार्य जलमन्तिकात्। यन्त्रैरुद्घाटयामास सोऽपश्यत्तत्र बालकम् ॥०३-२९३-५॥
sa tām uddhṛtya mañjūṣām utsārya jalam antikāt। yantraiḥ udghāṭayām āsa saḥ apaśyat tatra bālakam ॥03-293-5॥
[स (saḥ) - he; ताम् (tām) - her; उद्धृत्य (uddhṛtya) - having lifted up; मञ्जूषाम् (mañjūṣām) - box; उत्सार्य (utsārya) - having removed; जलम् (jalam) - water; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - from near; यन्त्रैः (yantraiḥ) - with devices; उद्घाटयाम् (udghāṭayām) - he began to open; आस (āsa) - (he) did; सः (saḥ) - he; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; तत्र (tatra) - there; बालकम् (bālakam) - child;]
(He, having lifted up her box, having removed water from near, with devices, began to open. He saw there a child.)
He lifted up that box, removed the water nearby, and using devices began to open it. There he saw a child. (03-293-5)
तरुणादित्यसङ्काशं हेमवर्मधरं तथा। मृष्टकुण्डलयुक्तेन वदनेन विराजता ॥०३-२९३-६॥
taruṇādityasaṅkāśaṃ hemavarmadharaṃ tathā। mṛṣṭakuṇḍalayuktena vadanena virājatā ॥03-293-6॥
[तरुण-अदित्य-सङ्काशम् (taruṇa-aditya-saṅkāśam) - of youthful sun; resembling; हेम-वर्म-धरम् (hema-varma-dharam) - golden armor; bearing; तथा (tathā) - also; मृष्ट-कुण्डल-युक्तेन (mṛṣṭa-kuṇḍala-yuktena) - with polished earrings; endowed; वदनेन (vadanena) - with face; विराजता (virājatā) - shining;]
(Also bearing golden armor, resembling a youthful sun, shining with a face endowed with polished earrings.)
He, resembling a youthful sun, wearing golden armor, and shining with a face adorned with polished earrings, also (stood there). (03-293-6)
स सूतो भार्यया सार्धं विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनः। अङ्कमारोप्य तं बालं भार्यां वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२९३-७॥
sa sūto bhāryayā sārdhaṃ vismayotphullalocanaḥ। aṅkam āropya taṃ bālaṃ bhāryāṃ vacanam abravīt ॥03-293-7॥

(He, the charioteer, with his wife together, with eyes widened in amazement, placing that child on his lap, to his wife words said.)

इदमत्यद्भुतं भीरु यतो जातोऽस्मि भामिनि। दृष्टवान्देवगर्भोऽयं मन्येऽस्मान्समुपागतः ॥०३-२९३-८॥
idam atyadbhutaṃ bhīru yato jāto'smi bhāmini। dṛṣṭavān devagarbho'yaṃ manye'smān samupāgataḥ॥03-293-8॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; अत्यद्भुतम् (atyadbhutam) - very wonderful; भीरु (bhīru) - timid one; यतः (yataḥ) - because; जातः (jātaḥ) - I am born; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भामिनि (bhāmini) - radiant lady; दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - seen; देवगर्भः (devagarbhaḥ) - divine embryo (being); अयम् (ayam) - this; मन्ये (manye) - I think; अस्मान् (asmān) - to us; समुपागतः (samupāgataḥ) - has come near;]
(This very wonderful, timid one, because I am born, O radiant lady, has seen this divine being; I think to us has come near.)
O timid one, this is very wonderful; because I have been born, O radiant lady, this divine being has seen (me); I think he has approached us. (03-293-8)
अनपत्यस्य पुत्रोऽयं देवैर्दत्तो ध्रुवं मम। इत्युक्त्वा तं ददौ पुत्रं राधायै स महीपते ॥०३-२९३-९॥
anapatyasya putro'yaṃ devairdatto dhruvaṃ mama। ityuktvā taṃ dadau putraṃ rādhāyai sa mahīpate ॥03-293-9॥
[अनपत्यस्य (anapatyasya) - of the sonless one; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; अयम् (ayam) - this; दैवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; दत्तः (dattaḥ) - given; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; मम (mama) - my; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तम् (tam) - him; ददौ (dadau) - gave; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; राधायै (rādhāyai) - to Rādhā; स (sa) - he; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king;]
(Of the sonless one, this son is certainly given by the gods, my (son). Thus having spoken, he gave him, the son, to Rādhā, O king.)
He is the son granted by the gods to the sonless, undoubtedly my own. Saying this, he gave the child to Rādhā, O king. (03-293-9)
प्रतिजग्राह तं राधा विधिवद्दिव्यरूपिणम्। पुत्रं कमलगर्भाभं देवगर्भं श्रिया वृतम् ॥०३-२९३-१०॥
pratijagrāha taṃ rādhā vidhivad divyarūpiṇam। putraṃ kamalagarbhābhaṃ devagarbhaṃ śriyā vṛtam॥03-293-10॥
[प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - she received; she accepted; तम् (tam) - him; राधा (rādhā) - Rādhā; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the proper rite; दिव्यरूपिणम् (divyarūpiṇam) - endowed with a divine form; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; कमलगर्भाभम् (kamalagarbhābham) - resembling the inside of a lotus; देवगर्भम् (devagarbham) - having the nature of a divine embryo; श्रिया (śriyā) - by beauty; by splendor; वृतम् (vṛtam) - enveloped; surrounded;]
(Rādhā, according to the proper rite, received him—her son endowed with a divine form, resembling the inside of a lotus, having the nature of a divine embryo, enveloped by beauty.)
Rādhā accepted him as her son according to the proper rite; he was of divine form, lotus-hued, of divine origin, and surrounded by beauty. (03-293-10)
पुपोष चैनं विधिवद्ववृधे स च वीर्यवान्। ततः प्रभृति चाप्यन्ये प्राभवन्नौरसाः सुताः ॥०३-२९३-११॥
pupoṣa cainaṃ vidhivadvavṛdhe sa ca vīryavān। tataḥ prabhṛti cāpyanye prābhavannaurasāḥ sutāḥ॥03-293-11॥
[पुपोष (pupoṣa) - nourished; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the proper manner; ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; ततः (tataḥ) - from then on; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - beginning; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अन्ये (anye) - other; प्राभवन् (prābhavan) - were born; औरसाः (aurasāḥ) - born from one's own body; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons;]
(He nourished him according to the proper manner, and he grew, powerful. From then on, also other sons born from one's own body were born.)
He nourished him as prescribed, and he grew up strong. From then on, other sons born from his own lineage were also born. (03-293-11)
वसुवर्मधरं दृष्ट्वा तं बालं हेमकुण्डलम्। नामास्य वसुषेणेति ततश्चक्रुर्द्विजातयः ॥०३-२९३-१२॥
vasuvarmadharaṃ dṛṣṭvā taṃ bālaṃ hemakuṇḍalam। nāmāsya vasuṣeṇeti tataścakrur dvijātayaḥ ॥03-293-12॥
[वसुवर्मधरं (vasuvarmadharam) - wearer of the Vasu's armor; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तं (tam) - that; बालं (bālam) - boy; हेमकुण्डलम् (hemakuṇḍalam) - having golden earrings; नाम (nāma) - name; अस्य (asya) - of him; वसुषेण (vasuṣeṇa) - Vasuṣeṇa; इति (iti) - thus; ततः (tataḥ) - then; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; द्विजातयः (dvijātayaḥ) - the twice-born; () -;]
(Having seen that boy wearing Vasu's armor and golden earrings, then the twice-born made his name 'Vasuṣeṇa' thus.)
Having seen that boy adorned with Vasu's armor and golden earrings, the twice-born then named him 'Vasuṣeṇa'. (03-293-12)
एवं स सूतपुत्रत्वं जगामामितविक्रमः। वसुषेण इति ख्यातो वृष इत्येव च प्रभुः ॥०३-२९३-१३॥
evaṃ sa sūtaputratvaṃ jagāmāmitavikramaḥ। vasuṣeṇa iti khyāto vṛṣa ityeva ca prabhuḥ॥03-293-13॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; स (sa) - he; सूतपुत्रत्वं (sūtaputratvaṃ) - the status of being a son of a sūta (charioteer); जगाम (jagāma) - attained; अमितविक्रमः (amitavikramaḥ) - of immeasurable prowess; वसुषेण (vasuṣeṇa) - Vasuṣeṇa; इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - known; वृष (vṛṣa) - Vṛṣa; इत्येव (ityeva) - just thus; च (ca) - and; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(Thus he, the one of immeasurable prowess, attained the status of being a son of a sūta; known as Vasuṣeṇa, and also just as Vṛṣa, the lord.)
Thus, he of immeasurable prowess assumed the status of a charioteer's son; he became known as Vasuṣeṇa, and also simply as Vṛṣa, the lord. (03-293-13)
स ज्येष्ठपुत्रः सूतस्य ववृधेऽङ्गेषु वीर्यवान्। चारेण विदितश्चासीत्पृथाया दिव्यवर्मभृत् ॥०३-२९३-१४॥
sa jyeṣṭhaputraḥ sūtasya vavṛdhe 'ṅgeṣu vīryavān. cāreṇa viditaś cāsīt pṛthāyā divyavarmabhṛt ॥03-293-14॥
[स (sa) - he; ज्येष्ठपुत्रः (jyeṣṭhaputraḥ) - eldest son; सूतस्य (sūtasya) - of Sūta; ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; ऽङ्गेषु ('aṅgeṣu) - in the Aṅga (kingdom); वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; चारेण (cāreṇa) - by means of espionage; विदितः (viditaḥ) - known; च (ca) - and; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; पृथाया (pṛthāyā) - of Pṛthā; दिव्यवर्मभृत् (divyavarmabhṛt) - bearer of celestial armor;]
(He, the eldest son of Sūta, grew powerful in the Aṅga (kingdom). By means of espionage, he was known as the bearer of celestial armor of Pṛthā.)
He, the eldest son of the charioteer, grew up powerfully in the kingdom of Aṅga. Through espionage, it became known that he was the one bearing the divine armor of Pṛthā. (03-293-14)
सूतस्त्वधिरथः पुत्रं विवृद्धं समये ततः। दृष्ट्वा प्रस्थापयामास पुरं वारणसाह्वयम् ॥०३-२९३-१५॥
sūtastv-adhirathaḥ putraṃ vivṛddhaṃ samaye tataḥ। dṛṣṭvā prasthāpayām āsa puraṃ vāraṇasāhvayam ॥03-293-15॥
[सूतः (sūtaḥ) - the charioteer; तु (tu) - but; अधिरथः (adhirathaḥ) - Adhiratha (proper noun); पुत्रं (putram) - son; विवृद्धं (vivṛddham) - grown; समये (samaye) - at the appointed time; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; प्रस्थापयाम् (prasthāpayām) - caused to be sent; आस (āsa) - he did; पुरं (puram) - city; वारणसाह्वयम् (vāraṇasāhvayam) - Vāraṇasāhvaya (Varanasi) (proper noun);]
(The charioteer Adhiratha, but, his son grown, at the appointed time, then, having seen, caused to be sent, (to) the city Vāraṇasāhvaya.)
But the charioteer Adhiratha, seeing that his son had grown, then at the appointed time sent him to the city of Vāraṇasāhvaya (Varanasi). (03-293-15)
तत्रोपसदनं चक्रे द्रोणस्येष्वस्त्रकर्मणि। सख्यं दुर्योधनेनैवमगच्छत्स च वीर्यवान् ॥०३-२९३-१६॥
tatr-opa-sadanaṁ cakre droṇasya iṣu-astra-karmaṇi। sakhyaṁ duryodhanena-evam-agacchat sa ca vīryavān ॥03-293-16॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; उपसदनम् (upasadanaṁ) - approaching; attendance; चक्रे (cakre) - performed; made; द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Droṇa; इष्वस्त्रकर्मणि (iṣu-astra-karmaṇi) - in the work of missiles and weapons; in archery; सख्यम् (sakhyam) - friendship; दुर्योधनेनैवम् (duryodhanena-evam) - by Duryodhana, thus; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went; attained; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful;]
(There, attendance he performed in the work of Droṇa concerning missiles and weapons. Friendship by Duryodhana, thus he attained, and he, powerful.)
There, he attended to Droṇa in the practice of archery, and thus, through Duryodhana, he gained friendship, and he was powerful. (03-293-16)
द्रोणात्कृपाच्च रामाच्च सोऽस्त्रग्रामं चतुर्विधम्। लब्ध्वा लोकेऽभवत्ख्यातः परमेष्वासतां गतः ॥०३-२९३-१७॥
droṇāt kṛpāc ca rāmāc ca so'stragrāmaṃ caturvidham। labdhvā loke'bhavat khyātaḥ parameṣvāsatāṃ gataḥ ॥03-293-17॥
[द्रोणात् (droṇāt) - from Droṇa; कृपात् (kṛpāt) - from Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; रामात् (rāmāt) - from Rāma; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; अस्त्रग्रामं (astragrāmam) - group of missiles; चतुर्विधम् (caturvidham) - fourfold; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; लोके (loke) - in the world; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - famous; परमेष्वासताम् (parameṣvāsatām) - the highest archership; गतः (gataḥ) - having attained;]
(From Droṇa, from Kṛpa, and from Rāma, he, the fourfold group of missiles having obtained, in the world became famous, having attained the highest archership.)
Having obtained the four kinds of missile-weapons from Droṇa, Kṛpa, and Rāma, he became famous in the world, attaining the supreme skill in archery. (03-293-17)
सन्धाय धार्तराष्ट्रेण पार्थानां विप्रिये स्थितः। योद्धुमाशंसते नित्यं फल्गुनेन महात्मना ॥०३-२९३-१८॥
sandhāya dhārtarāṣṭreṇa pārthānāṃ vipriye sthitaḥ। yoddhum āśaṃsate nityaṃ phalgūnena mahātmanā ॥03-293-18॥
[सन्धाय (sandhāya) - having allied; धार्तराष्ट्रेण (dhārtarāṣṭreṇa) - with the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; पार्थानां (pārthānāṃ) - of the sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and brothers); विप्रिये (vipriye) - unpleasant (enemy); स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - having stood; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; आशंसते (āśaṃsate) - desires; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; फल्गुनेन (phalgūnena) - with Phalguna (Arjuna); महात्मना (mahātmanā) - with the great-souled one;]
(Having allied with the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having stood as enemy to the sons of Pṛthā, he always desires to fight with Phalguna, the great-souled one.)
Having made an alliance with Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, having taken a hostile stand against the sons of Pṛthā, he constantly wishes to fight with the noble-souled Phalguna (Arjuna). (03-293-18)
सदा हि तस्य स्पर्धासीदर्जुनेन विशां पते। अर्जुनस्य च कर्णेन यतो दृष्टो बभूव सः ॥०३-२९३-१९॥
sadā hi tasya spardhāsīdarjunena viśāṃ pate। arjunasya ca karṇena yato dṛṣṭo babhūva saḥ ॥03-293-19॥
[सदा (sadā) - always; हि (hi) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; स्पर्धा (spardhā) - rivalry; competition; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - with Arjuna; by Arjuna; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of men; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; च (ca) - and; कर्णेन (karṇena) - with Karṇa; by Karṇa; यतः (yataḥ) - because; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - regarded; considered; बभूव (babhūva) - was; became; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Always indeed of him rivalry was with Arjuna, O lord of men. And of Arjuna with Karṇa, because he was considered thus.)
O lord of men, there was always rivalry felt by him toward Arjuna; and by Arjuna toward Karṇa, because thus he was regarded. (03-293-19)
तं तु कुण्डलिनं दृष्ट्वा वर्मणा च समन्वितम्। अवध्यं समरे मत्वा पर्यतप्यद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-२९३-२०॥
taṃ tu kuṇḍalinaṃ dṛṣṭvā varmaṇā ca samanvitam। avadhyaṃ samare matvā paryatapyadyudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥03-293-20॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; तु (tu) - but; कुण्डलिनं (kuṇḍalinaṃ) - adorned with earrings; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; वर्मणा (varmaṇā) - with armor; च (ca) - and; समन्वितम् (samanvitam) - endowed; अवध्यं (avadhyaṃ) - invulnerable; समरे (samare) - in battle; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; पर्यतप्यत् (paryatapyat) - was distressed; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(But having seen him endowed with earrings and with armor, having considered (him) invulnerable in battle, Yudhiṣṭhira was distressed.)
But seeing him adorned with earrings and armor, and realizing that he was invulnerable in battle, Yudhiṣṭhira became troubled. (03-293-20)
यदा तु कर्णो राजेन्द्र भानुमन्तं दिवाकरम्। स्तौति मध्यंदिने प्राप्ते प्राञ्जलिः सलिले स्थितः ॥०३-२९३-२१॥
yadā tu karṇo rājendra bhānumantaṃ divākaram। stauti madhyaṃdine prāpte prāñjaliḥ salile sthitaḥ ॥03-293-21॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; तु (tu) - but; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; भानुमन्तम् (bhānumantam) - the radiant one; दिवाकरम् (divākaram) - the sun; स्तौति (stauti) - praises; मध्यंदिने (madhyaṃdine) - at midday; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - having arrived; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with hands joined in reverence; सलिले (salile) - in the water; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing;]
(When but Karṇa, O king, the radiant one, the sun, praises, at midday having arrived, with hands joined in reverence, standing in the water.)
O King, when Karṇa, standing in water with hands joined in reverence, praises the radiant sun at midday, (this happens). (03-293-21)
तत्रैनमुपतिष्ठन्ति ब्राह्मणा धनहेतवः। नादेयं तस्य तत्काले किञ्चिदस्ति द्विजातिषु ॥०३-२९३-२२॥
tatrai nam upatiṣṭhanti brāhmaṇā dhanahetavaḥ। nādeyaṃ tasya tatkāle kiñcid asti dvijātiṣu॥03-293-22॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; एनम् (enam) - him; उपतिष्ठन्ति (upatiṣṭhanti) - approach; ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; धनहेतवः (dhanahetavaḥ) - for the sake of wealth; न (na) - not; अदेयम् (adeyam) - to be given; तस्य (tasya) - of him; तत्काले (tatkāle) - at that time; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अस्ति (asti) - there is; द्विजातिषु (dvijātiṣu) - among the twice-born;]
(There him approach brāhmaṇas for the sake of wealth. Not to be given of him at that time anything is among the twice-born.)
There, brāhmaṇas motivated by wealth approach him. At that time, there is nothing to be given by him among the twice-born. (03-293-22)
तमिन्द्रो ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा भिक्षां देहीत्युपस्थितः। स्वागतं चेति राधेयस्तमथ प्रत्यभाषत ॥०३-२९३-२३॥
tam indro brāhmaṇo bhūtvā bhikṣāṃ dehīty upasthitaḥ। svāgataṃ ceti rādheyas tam atha pratyabhāṣata ॥03-293-23॥
[तम् (tam) - him; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a brāhmaṇa; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; भिक्षाम् (bhikṣām) - alms; देहि (dehi) - give; इति (iti) - thus; उपस्थितः (upasthitaḥ) - having arrived; स्वागतम् (svāgatam) - welcome; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; राधेयः (rādheyaḥ) - the son of Radha; तम् (tam) - him; अथ (atha) - then; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed;]
(Him Indra, having become a brāhmaṇa, (said) 'Give alms'—having arrived. 'Welcome,' thus (said) the son of Radha to him, then addressed.)
Indra, having assumed the form of a brāhmaṇa, approached him saying 'Give alms.' The son of Radha then addressed him, saying 'Welcome.' (03-293-23)
