देवराजमनुप्राप्तं ब्राह्मणच्छद्मना वृषः। दृष्ट्वा स्वागतमित्याह न बुबोधास्य मानसम् ॥०३-२९४-१॥
devarājam anuprāptaṃ brāhmaṇacchadmanā vṛṣaḥ। dṛṣṭvā svāgatam ity āha na bubodhāsya mānasam ॥03-294-1॥
[देवराजम् (devarājam) - king of the gods; Indra; अनुप्राप्तं (anuprāptaṃ) - arrived (having come to); ब्राह्मणच्छद्मना (brāhmaṇacchadmanā) - with brahmin disguise; वृषः (vṛṣaḥ) - the bull; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; स्वागतम् (svāgatam) - "Welcome"; इति (iti) - thus; आह (āha) - said; न (na) - not; बुबोध (bubodha) - understood; अस्य (asya) - his; मानसम् (mānasam) - mind;]
(The bull, having seen the king of the gods who arrived with the disguise of a brahmin, said "Welcome" thus; he did not understand his mind.)
The bull, seeing the king of the gods who had come in the guise of a brahmin, said "Welcome," but did not perceive his intention. (03-294-1)
हिरण्यकण्ठीः प्रमदा ग्रामान्वा बहुगोकुलान्। किं ददानीति तं विप्रमुवाचाधिरथिस्ततः ॥०३-२९४-२॥
hiraṇyakaṇṭhīḥ pramadā grāmānvā bahugokulān। kiṁ dadānīti taṁ vipramuvācādhirathistataḥ ॥03-294-2॥
[हिरण्यकण्ठीः (hiraṇyakaṇṭhīḥ) - those (women) with golden necklaces; प्रमदा (pramadā) - women; ग्रामान् (grāmān) - villages; वा (vā) - or; बहु-गोकुलान् (bahu-gokulān) - many cow-herds; किम् (kim) - what; ददानी (dadāni) - shall I give; इति (iti) - thus; तं (taṃ) - to him; विप्रम् (vipram) - the Brahmin; उवाच (uvāca) - said; अधिरथिः (adhirathiḥ) - Adhirathi (proper noun); ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
((Those) with golden necklaces, women, villages or many cow-herds; what shall I give? Thus, to him, the Brahmin, Adhirathi then said.)
Adhirathi then said to the Brahmin: "(Shall I give) women adorned with golden necklaces, or villages, or many herds of cattle? What shall I give?" (03-294-2)

The Brāhmaṇa said.
हिरण्यकण्ठ्यः प्रमदा यच्चान्यत्प्रीतिवर्धनम्। नाहं दत्तमिहेच्छामि तदर्थिभ्यः प्रदीयताम् ॥०३-२९४-३॥
hiraṇyakaṇṭhyaḥ pramadā yac-cānyat prītivardhanam। nāhaṃ dattam iha icchāmi tad arthibhyaḥ pradīyatām॥03-294-3॥
[हिरण्यकण्ठ्यः (hiraṇyakaṇṭhyaḥ) - golden-necklaces; प्रमदा (pramadā) - women (delight, beloved); यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; प्रीति-वर्धनम् (prīti-vardhanam) - which increases affection; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; दत्तम् (dattam) - given; इह (iha) - here; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - wish; तत् (tat) - that; अर्थिभ्यः (arthibhyaḥ) - to the needy; प्रदीयताम् (pradīyatām) - let it be given;]
(Golden-necklaces, women, and whatever else (is) pleasing-increasing; not I given here wish; that to the needy let it be given.)
I do not wish for golden necklaces, women, or anything else that increases pleasure; let those things be given here to those in need. (03-294-3)
यदेतत्सहजं वर्म कुण्डले च तवानघ। एतदुत्कृत्य मे देहि यदि सत्यव्रतो भवान् ॥०३-२९४-४॥
yadetatsa-hajaṃ varma kuṇḍale ca tavānagha। etadutkṛtya me dehi yadi satyavrato bhavān ॥03-294-4॥
[यद् (yad) - which; एतत् (etat) - this; सहजं (sahajaṃ) - innate; वर्म (varma) - armor; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless; एतत् (etat) - this; उत्कृत्य (utkṛtya) - having cut off; मे (me) - to me; देहि (dehi) - give; यदि (yadi) - if; सत्यव्रतः (satyavrataḥ) - truthful (one); भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
(Which this innate armor and earrings and your, O sinless, this having cut off to me give, if truthful one you.)
O sinless one, if you are truthful, then cut off this innate armor and these earrings of yours and give them to me. (03-294-4)
एतदिच्छाम्यहं क्षिप्रं त्वया दत्तं परन्तप। एष मे सर्वलाभानां लाभः परमको मतः ॥०३-२९४-५॥
etadicchāmyahaṃ kṣipraṃ tvayā dattaṃ parantapa। eṣa me sarvalābhānāṃ lābhaḥ paramako mataḥ॥03-294-5॥
[एतद् (etad) - this; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; अहम् (aham) - I; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; दत्तं (dattaṃ) - given; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; एष (eṣa) - this; मे (me) - to me; सर्वलाभानां (sarvalābhānāṃ) - of all gains; लाभः (lābhaḥ) - gain; परमकः (paramakaḥ) - supreme; मतः (mataḥ) - regarded;]
(This I desire I quickly by you given O scorcher of foes. This to me of all gains gain supreme regarded.)
O scorcher of foes, I desire this to be given quickly by you. Of all gains, this is regarded by me as the supreme gain. (03-294-5)

avaniṁ pramadā gāś ca nirvāpaṁ bahuvārṣikam। tat te vipra pradāsyāmi na tu varma na kuṇḍale ॥03-294-6॥
[अवनिं (avaniṁ) - earth (land); प्रमदा (pramadā) - woman; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; निर्वापम् (nirvāpam) - offering (oblations); बहुवार्षिकम् (bahuvārṣikam) - of many years; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; sage; प्रदास्यामि (pradāsyāmi) - I shall give; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; वर्म (varma) - armor; न (na) - not; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings;]
(Earth, woman, cows, and offering of many years — that to you, brāhmaṇa, I shall give, but not armor, not earrings.)
I will give you earth, a woman, cows, and offerings accumulated over many years, O brāhmaṇa, but I will not give you armor or earrings. (03-294-6)

एवं बहुविधैर्वाक्यैर्याच्यमानः स तु द्विजः। कर्णेन भरतश्रेष्ठ नान्यं वरमयाचत ॥०३-२९४-७॥
evaṁ bahuvidhair vākyair yācyamānaḥ sa tu dvijaḥ। karṇena bharataśreṣṭha nānyaṁ varam ayācata॥03-294-7॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - by many kinds; वाक्यैः (vākyaiḥ) - with statements; याच्यमानः (yācyamānaḥ) - being requested; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born (Brahmin); कर्णेन (karṇena) - by Karṇa; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; न (na) - not; अन्यं (anyaṁ) - other; वरम् (varam) - boon; अयाचत (ayācata) - he requested;]
(Thus, by many kinds of statements, being requested, he but the twice-born, by Karṇa, O best of the Bharatas, not other boon he requested.)
Thus, although requested in many ways by Karṇa, the twice-born did not ask for any other boon, O best of the Bharatas. (03-294-7)
सान्त्वितश्च यथाशक्ति पूजितश्च यथाविधि। नैवान्यं स द्विजश्रेष्ठः कामयामास वै वरम् ॥०३-२९४-८॥
sāntvitaś ca yathāśakti pūjitaś ca yathāvidhi। naivānyaṃ sa dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ kāmayāmāsa vai varam ॥03-294-8॥
[सान्त्वितः (sāntvitaḥ) - consoled; च (ca) - and; यथाशक्ति (yathāśakti) - according to ability; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; च (ca) - and; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to injunction; न एव (na eva) - not indeed; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - other; स (sa) - he; द्विजश्रेष्ठः (dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ) - best of the twice-born; कामयामास (kāmayāmāsa) - desired; वै (vai) - indeed; वरम् (varam) - boon;]
(Consoled and according to ability honored and according to injunction, not indeed other he, best of the twice-born, desired indeed boon.)
Consoled and honored as far as possible and according to the proper injunctions, that eminent Brahmin did not wish for any other boon. (03-294-8)
यदा नान्यं प्रवृणुते वरं वै द्विजसत्तमः। तदैनमब्रवीद्भूयो राधेयः प्रहसन्निव ॥०३-२९४-९॥
yadā nānyaṃ pravṛṇute varaṃ vai dvijasattamaḥ। tadenam abravīd bhūyo rādheyaḥ prahasann iva॥03-294-9॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; न (na) - not; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - other; प्रवृणुते (pravṛṇute) - chooses; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विजसत्तमः (dvijasattamaḥ) - best of twice-born (brāhmaṇa); तदा (tadā) - then; एनम् (enam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; राधेयः (rādheyaḥ) - Rādheya (Karna, son of Radha); प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if;]
(When not other (no other) chooses the boon indeed, best of twice-born, then to him said again Rādheya as if smiling.)
When the best of the twice-born did not choose any other boon, then Rādheya (Karna), as if smiling, spoke to him again. (03-294-9)
सहजं वर्म मे विप्र कुण्डले चामृतोद्भवे। तेनावध्योऽस्मि लोकेषु ततो नैतद्ददाम्यहम् ॥०३-२९४-१०॥
sahajaṃ varma me vipra kuṇḍale cāmṛtodbhave. tenāvadhyo'smi lokeṣu tato naitaddadāmyaham ॥03-294-10॥
[सहजं (sahajam) - innate; वर्म (varma) - armor; मे (me) - my; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; च (ca) - and; अमृतोद्भवे (amṛtodbhave) - born from nectar; तेन (tena) - by that; अवध्यः (avadhyaḥ) - not to be slain; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - among the worlds; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Innate armor my O brāhmaṇa earrings and born from nectar; by that not to be slain I am among the worlds; therefore not this I give I.)
O brāhmaṇa, my innate armor and earrings are born from nectar; by them I am invulnerable among the worlds; therefore, I do not give this. (03-294-10)
विशालं पृथिवीराज्यं क्षेमं निहतकण्टकम्। प्रतिगृह्णीष्व मत्तस्त्वं साधु ब्राह्मणपुङ्गव ॥०३-२९४-११॥
viśālaṃ pṛthivī-rājyaṃ kṣemaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam। pratigṛhṇīṣva mattas tvaṃ sādhu brāhmaṇa-puṅgava ॥03-294-11॥
[विशालं (viśālam) - vast; extensive; पृथिवीराज्यं (pṛthivī-rājyam) - earthly kingdom; domain over the earth; क्षेमं (kṣemam) - secure; safe; निहतकण्टकम् (nihatakaṇṭakam) - with obstacles (kaṇṭaka) removed; free from thorns; प्रतिगृह्णीष्व (pratigṛhṇīṣva) - accept; receive; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; साधु (sādhu) - O good one; O noble; ब्राह्मणपुङ्गव (brāhmaṇa-puṅgava) - best of Brāhmaṇas;]
(Vast earthly kingdom, secure, free from obstacles, accept from me, you, O noble best of Brāhmaṇas.)
O noble one, best of Brāhmaṇas, accept from me the vast and secure earthly kingdom, free from all obstacles. (03-294-11)
कुण्डलाभ्यां विमुक्तोऽहं वर्मणा सहजेन च। गमनीयो भविष्यामि शत्रूणां द्विजसत्तम ॥०३-२९४-१२॥
kuṇḍalābhyāṁ vimukto'haṁ varmaṇā sahajena ca. gamanīyo bhaviṣyāmi śatrūṇāṁ dvijasattama ॥03-294-12॥
[कुण्डलाभ्यां (kuṇḍalābhyām) - from the two earrings; विमुक्तः (vimuktaḥ) - deprived; अहम् (aham) - I; वर्मणा (varmaṇā) - armor; सहजेन (sahajena) - inborn; च (ca) - and; गमनीयः (gamanīyaḥ) - liable to be gone (can be taken away); भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - will become; शत्रूणाम् (śatrūṇām) - of enemies; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born;]
(From the earrings deprived I, of armor inborn and, liable to be gone will become of enemies, O best of twice-born.)
O best of the twice-born, deprived of my earrings and my inborn armor, I will become vulnerable to being destroyed by enemies. (03-294-12)
यदा नान्यं वरं वव्रे भगवान्पाकशासनः। ततः प्रहस्य कर्णस्तं पुनरित्यब्रवीद्वचः ॥०३-२९४-१३॥
yadā nānyaṃ varaṃ vavre bhagavān pākāśāsanaḥ। tataḥ prahasya karṇaḥ taṃ punaḥ iti abravīt vacaḥ॥03-294-13॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; न (na) - not; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - other; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; वव्रे (vavre) - (he) chose; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; पाकशासनः (pākāśāsanaḥ) - Indra; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having smiled; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; तम् (tam) - him; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - (he) said; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
(When not any other boon he chose, the venerable Indra; then having smiled, Karna to him again thus said words.)
When the venerable Indra did not choose any other boon, then Karna, having smiled, again spoke these words to him. (03-294-13)
विदितो देवदेवेश प्रागेवासि मम प्रभो। न तु न्याय्यं मया दातुं तव शक्र वृथा वरम् ॥०३-२९४-१४॥
vidito devadeveśa prāgevāsi mama prabho। na tu nyāyyaṃ mayā dātuṃ tava śakra vṛthā varam ॥03-294-14॥
[विदितः (viditaḥ) - known; देवदेवेश (devadeveśa) - O lord of lords of the gods; प्राक् एव (prāk eva) - already; indeed; असि (asi) - you are; मम (mama) - to me; प्रभो (prabho) - O master; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; न्याय्यम् (nyāyyam) - proper; मया (mayā) - by me; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; तव (tava) - to you; शक्र (śakra) - O Indra; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; वरम् (varam) - boon;]
(Known, O lord of lords of the gods, already indeed you are to me, O master. Not but proper by me to give to you, O Indra, in vain, boon.)
You are already known to me, O lord of the lords of the gods, O master. But it is not proper for me to give a boon to you in vain, O Indra. (03-294-14)
त्वं हि देवेश्वरः साक्षात्त्वया देयो वरो मम। अन्येषां चैव भूतानामीश्वरो ह्यसि भूतकृत् ॥०३-२९४-१५॥
tvaṁ hi deveśvaraḥ sākṣāttvayā deyo varo mama। anyeṣāṁ caiva bhūtānām īśvaro hy asi bhūtakṛt ॥03-294-15॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; देवेश्वरः (deveśvaraḥ) - lord of the gods; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; देयः (deyaḥ) - to be given; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; मम (mama) - to me; अन्येषां (anyeṣām) - of others; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - lord; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - you are; भूतकृत् (bhūtakṛt) - creator of beings;]
(You indeed, lord of the gods, directly by you the boon is to be given to me. Of other beings also indeed, of beings the lord indeed you are, creator of beings.)
You are indeed the lord of the gods; by you alone should the boon be given to me. You are also, in truth, the lord and creator of all beings. (03-294-15)
यदि दास्यामि ते देव कुण्डले कवचं तथा। वध्यतामुपयास्यामि त्वं च शक्रावहास्यताम् ॥०३-२९४-१६॥
yadi dāsyāmi te deva kuṇḍale kavacaṃ tathā। vadhyatām upayāsyāmi tvaṃ ca śakrāvahāsyatām॥03-294-16॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I will give; ते (te) - to you; देव (deva) - O god; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - the earrings; कवचं (kavacaṃ) - the armor; तथा (tathā) - thus; वध्यताम् (vadhyatām) - may I be killed; उपयास्यामि (upayāsyāmi) - I will approach; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; शक्रावहास्यताम् (śakrāvahāsyatām) - may (you) be ridiculed by Śakra;]
(If I shall give to you, O god, the earrings and armor thus, may I be killed, I will approach (that fate); you also may be ridiculed by Śakra.)
If I give you, O god, the earrings and armor as such, may I be killed and may you also be ridiculed by Indra. (03-294-16)
तस्माद्विनिमयं कृत्वा कुण्डले वर्म चोत्तमम्। हरस्व शक्र कामं मे न दद्यामहमन्यथा ॥०३-२९४-१७॥
tasmād vinimayaṃ kṛtvā kuṇḍale varma cottamam। harasva śakra kāmaṃ me na dadyām aham anyathā॥03-294-17॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; विनिमयम् (vinimayam) - exchange; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; वर्म (varma) - armor; च (ca) - and; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - the best; हरस्व (harasva) - take; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; कामम् (kāmam) - desired; मे (me) - my; न (na) - not; दद्याम् (dadyām) - I would give; अहम् (aham) - I; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(Therefore, having made an exchange, take the earrings and the best armor, O Śakra, as desired by me; I would not give (them) otherwise.)
Therefore, O Śakra, after making an exchange, take the earrings and the finest armor as I wish; otherwise, I would not give them. (03-294-17)

विदितोऽहं रवेः पूर्वमायन्नेव तवान्तिकम्। तेन ते सर्वमाख्यातमेवमेतन्न संशयः ॥०३-२९४-१८॥
vidito'ham raveḥ pūrvam āyanneva tavāntikam। tena te sarvam ākhyātam evam etan na saṃśayaḥ॥03-294-18॥
[विदितः (viditaḥ) - known; अहम् (aham) - I; रवेः (raveḥ) - of the Sun; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; आयन् (āyan) - coming; एव (eva) - indeed; तव (tava) - your; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - presence; तेन (tena) - by him; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - related; एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Known I by the Sun before, coming indeed to your presence. By him to you all related thus, this not doubt.)
I was known by the Sun earlier when coming to your presence. By him everything has been related to you thus; about this there is no doubt. (03-294-18)
काममस्तु तथा तात तव कर्ण यथेच्छसि। वर्जयित्वा तु मे वज्रं प्रवृणीष्व यदिच्छसि ॥०३-२९४-१९॥
kāmam astu tathā tāta tava karṇa yathecchasi। varjayitvā tu me vajraṁ pravṛṇīṣva yad icchasi ॥03-294-19॥
[कामम् (kāmam) - as you wish; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; तथा (tathā) - so; thus; तात (tāta) - dear son; तव (tava) - your; कर्ण (karṇa) - Karṇa; यथेच्छसि (yathecchasi) - as you desire; वर्जयित्वा (varjayitvā) - except; having set aside; तु (tu) - but; मे (me) - my; वज्रम् (vajram) - thunderbolt (weapon); प्रवृणीष्व (pravṛṇīṣva) - choose; यद् (yad) - whatever; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
(As you wish, so let it be, dear son; O Karṇa, as you desire. But except my thunderbolt, choose whatever you desire.)
Let it be as you wish, dear Karṇa; except for my thunderbolt, choose whatever else you desire. (03-294-19)

tataḥ karṇaḥ prahṛṣṭastu upasaṅgamya vāsavam। amoghāṃ śaktim abhyetya vavre sampūrṇamānasaḥ॥03-294-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - gladdened; तु (tu) - indeed; उपसङ्गम्य (upasaṅgamya) - having approached; वासवम् (vāsavam) - Indra; अमोघां (amoghāṃ) - unfailing; शक्तिम् (śaktim) - dart; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having obtained; वव्रे (vavre) - he asked (for, requested); सम्पूर्णमानसः (sampūrṇamānasaḥ) - with his mind completely (concentrated/having full intention);]
(Then Karṇa, gladdened indeed, having approached Indra, having obtained the unfailing dart, with his mind completely (intent), he asked (for it).)

O Indra, grant me armor, earrings, and an unfailing spear that destroys companies of enemies in the forefront of battle. (03-294-21)

(Then, having considered with the mind for a moment, Vāsava for the sake of strength, O protector of the earth, into the ear, a statement then spoke.)
Then, after reflecting for a moment, Indra (Vāsava) spoke a statement into your ear, O protector of the earth, for the sake of empowering you. (3-294-22)
कुण्डले मे प्रयच्छस्व वर्म चैव शरीरजम्। गृहाण कर्ण शक्तिं त्वमनेन समयेन मे ॥०३-२९४-२३॥
kuṇḍale me prayacchasva varma caiva śarīrajam। gṛhāṇa karṇa śaktiṃ tvam anena samayena me॥03-294-23॥

(Earrings to me give, armor and indeed born of the body. Take ear spear you by this at the proper time from me.)
Give me the earrings and the armor that are born of the body; take the ear-spear from me at this very time. (03-294-23)
अमोघा हन्ति शतशः शत्रून्मम करच्युता। पुनश्च पाणिमभ्येति मम दैत्यान्विनिघ्नतः ॥०३-२९४-२४॥
amoghā hanti śataśaḥ śatrūn mama karacyutā। punaś ca pāṇim abhyeti mama daityān vini ghnataḥ॥03-294-24॥
[अमोघा (amoghā) - unfailing; (she) हन्ति (hanti) - kills; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; मम (mama) - my; करच्युता (karacyutā) - released from (my) hand; पुनश्च (punaś ca) - and again; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; अभ्येति (abhyeti) - approaches; मम (mama) - my; दैत्यान् (daityān) - daityas (demons); विनिघ्नतः (vini ghnataḥ) - slaying;]
(The unfailing (weapon), released from my hand, kills my enemies by hundreds; and again it approaches my hand as I am slaying the daityas.)
The unfailing weapon, released from my hand, destroys my enemies by the hundreds and then returns to my hand again as I slay the daityas. (03-294-24)
सेयं तव करं प्राप्य हत्वैकं रिपुमूर्जितम्। गर्जन्तं प्रतपन्तं च मामेवैष्यति सूतज ॥०३-२९४-२५॥
seyaṁ tava karaṁ prāpya hatvaikaṁ ripum-ūrjitam| garjantaṁ pratapantaṁ ca māmevaiṣyati sūtaja ॥03-294-25॥

(She, having attained your hand, having slain one powerful enemy, roaring and oppressing, will come only to me, O son of the charioteer.)

(One strong enemy roaring in battle you will slay. But the one whom you desire, he is protected by the great-souled.)

यमाहुर्वेदविद्वांसो वराहमजितं हरिम्। नारायणमचिन्त्यं च तेन कृष्णेन रक्ष्यते ॥०३-२९४-२८॥

(Whom the knowers of the Veda call Varāha, Ajita, Hari, Nārāyaṇa, the incomprehensible, and by him, by Kṛṣṇa, is protected.)

evam apy astu bhagavan eka-vīra-vadhe mama। amoghā pravarā śaktir yena hanyāṃ pratāpinam॥03-294-29॥

(Thus, also let it be, O Lord, for the slaying of the one hero of mine, an unfailing excellent spear by which I may slay the powerful one.)
Even so, let it be, O Lord; for the slaying of that one hero of mine, may there be an unfailing, excellent spear by which I may slay the mighty one. (03-294-29)
उत्कृत्य तु प्रदास्यामि कुण्डले कवचं च ते। निकृत्तेषु च गात्रेषु न मे बीभत्सता भवेत् ॥०३-२९४-३०॥
utkṛtya tu pradāsyāmi kuṇḍale kavacaṁ ca te। nikṛtteṣu ca gātreṣu na me bībhatsatā bhavet ॥03-294-30॥
[उत्कृत्य (utkṛtya) - having cut off; तु (tu) - but; प्रदास्यामि (pradāsyāmi) - I shall give; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings; कवचं (kavacaṁ) - armor; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; निकृत्तेषु (nikṛtteṣu) - when (they are) cut off; च (ca) - and; गात्रेषु (gātreṣu) - on (my) limbs; न (na) - not; मे (me) - for me; बीभत्सता (bībhatsatā) - revulsion; भवेत् (bhavet) - would arise;]
(But having cut off, I shall give you the earrings and armor; and when (they are) cut off on (my) limbs, for me, revulsion would not arise.)
But having cut (them off), I shall give you my earrings and armor; and even when my limbs are thus cut, I would feel no revulsion. (03-294-30)

na te bībhatsatā karṇa bhaviṣyati kathañcana। vraṇaś cāpi na gātreṣu yas tvaṃ nānṛtam icchasi ॥03-294-31॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; बीभत्सता (bībhatsatā) - revulsion; कर्ण (karṇa) - O Karṇa; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; व्रणः (vraṇaḥ) - wound; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; न (na) - not; गात्रेषु (gātreṣu) - on (your) limbs; यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; नानृतम् (nānṛtam) - not-untruth; इच्छसि (icchasi) - desire;]
(Not to you revulsion, O Karṇa, will be in any way. A wound also not on (your) limbs, who you not-untruth desire.)
There will not be any revulsion for you, O Karṇa, in any way; nor will there be a wound on your limbs, since you desire not untruth. (03-294-31)
यादृशस्ते पितुर्वर्णस्तेजश्च वदतां वर। तादृशेनैव वर्णेन त्वं कर्ण भविता पुनः ॥०३-२९४-३२॥
yādṛśas te pitur varṇas tejaś ca vadatāṃ vara। tādṛśenaiva varṇena tvaṃ karṇa bhavitā punaḥ ॥03-294-32॥
[यादृशः (yādṛśaḥ) - such as; ते (te) - your; पितुः (pituḥ) - father's; वर्णः (varṇaḥ) - complexion; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; च (ca) - and; वदतां (vadatām) - of speakers; वर (vara) - best; तादृशेन (tādṛśena) - by such; एव (eva) - indeed; वर्णेन (varṇena) - by complexion; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; कर्ण (karṇa) - Karṇa; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Such as your father's complexion and splendor, O best of speakers, by such indeed by complexion you, Karṇa, will be again.)
O Karṇa, you will be, again, of the same complexion and splendor as your father, O best of speakers. (03-294-32)
विद्यमानेषु शस्त्रेषु यद्यमोघामसंशये। प्रमत्तो मोक्ष्यसे चापि त्वय्येवैषा पतिष्यति ॥०३-२९४-३३॥
vidyamāneṣu śastreṣu yady amoghām asaṁśaye | pramatto mokṣyase cāpi tvayy evaiṣā patiṣyati ॥03-294-33॥

(If, among the weapons present, you (being) inattentive, even if (there is) an unfailing one, without doubt, you will release (it), and this will indeed fall upon you.)
If, among the weapons present, you are inattentive and release even an unfailing one, without doubt, this very weapon will fall upon you. (03-294-33)

(Then, the blazing spear having taken, O lord of men, the sharp weapon having taken, all limbs he cut.)
Then, having seized the blazing spear, O lord of men, he took up a sharp weapon and severed all the limbs. (03-294-35)
ततो देवा मानवा दानवाश्च; निकृन्तन्तं कर्णमात्मानमेवम्। दृष्ट्वा सर्वे सिद्धसङ्घाश्च नेदु; र्न ह्यस्यासीद्दुःखजो वै विकारः ॥०३-२९४-३६॥
tato devā mānavā dānavāś ca; nikṛntantaṃ karṇam ātmānam evam. dṛṣṭvā sarve siddhasaṅghāś ca nedur na hy asyāsīd duḥkhajo vai vikāraḥ ॥03-294-36॥

(Then gods, men, and demons, seeing him thus cutting his own ear; and all the assemblies of Siddhas shouted; for truly there was not, indeed, of him any perturbation arisen from pain.)
Then, seeing him so cutting off his own ear, gods, men, demons, and all assemblies of Siddhas cried out in amazement, for there was truly no agitation in him caused by pain. (03-294-36)
ततो दिव्या दुन्दुभयः प्रणेदुः; पपातोच्चैः पुष्पवर्षं च दिव्यम्। दृष्ट्वा कर्णं शस्त्रसङ्कृत्तगात्रं; मुहुश्चापि स्मयमानं नृवीरम् ॥०३-२९४-३७॥
tato divyā dundubhayaḥ praṇeduḥ; papātoccaiḥ puṣpavarṣaṃ ca divyam. dṛṣṭvā karṇaṃ śastrasankṛttagātraṃ; muhuścāpi smayamānaṃ nṛvīram ॥03-294-37॥

(Then divine drums resounded; a divine shower of flowers also fell from above. Having seen Karna, his body cut by weapons, and the hero among men smiling repeatedly.)
Then divine drums resounded and a shower of heavenly flowers fell from above, seeing Karna—his body cut by weapons—while the heroic man was smiling again and again. (03-294-37)
ततश्छित्त्वा कवचं दिव्यमङ्गा; त्तथैवार्द्रं प्रददौ वासवाय। तथोत्कृत्य प्रददौ कुण्डले ते; वैकर्तनः कर्मणा तेन कर्णः ॥०३-२९४-३८॥
tataś chittvā kavacaṃ divyam aṅgāt tathāiva ārdraṃ pradadau vāsavāya। tathā utkṛtya pradadau kuṇḍale te vaikartanaḥ karmaṇā tena karṇaḥ ॥03-294-38॥

(Then, having cut off the divine armor from (his) body, just so moist, he gave it to Vāsava. Thus, having hewn off, he gave those earrings; Vaikartana, by that act, (became) Karṇa.)
Then, he cut off the divine armor from his body, still moist, and gave it to Vāsava (Indra). In the same way, Karṇa cut off and gave his earrings; thus, by that act, Vaikartana became Karṇa. (03-294-38)
ततः शक्रः प्रहसन्वञ्चयित्वा; कर्णं लोके यशसा योजयित्वा। कृतं कार्यं पाण्डवानां हि मेने; ततः पश्चाद्दिवमेवोत्पपात ॥०३-२९४-३९॥

(Then Indra, having smiled, having deceived, having attached Karna to fame in the world, thought the task of the Pāṇḍavas indeed done; then afterwards, he ascended to heaven.)
Then Indra, having deceived and smiled, having bound Karna to worldly fame, considered the work for the Pāṇḍavas accomplished; and then he ascended to heaven. (03-294-39)
श्रुत्वा कर्णं मुषितं धार्तराष्ट्रा; दीनाः सर्वे भग्नदर्पा इवासन्। तां चावस्थां गमितं सूतपुत्रं; श्रुत्वा पार्था जहृषुः काननस्थाः ॥०३-२९४-४०॥
śrutvā karṇaṃ muṣitaṃ dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ; dīnāḥ sarve bhagnadarpa iva āsan. tāṃ ca avasthāṃ gamitaṃ sūtaputram; śrutvā pārthā jahṛṣuḥ kānanasthāḥ ॥03-294-40॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कर्णं (karṇam) - Karna; मुषितं (muṣitam) - deprived; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; दीनाः (dīnāḥ) - dispirited; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भग्नदर्पा (bhagnadarpa) - with broken pride; इव (iva) - as if; आसन् (āsan) - were; तां (tāṃ) - that; च (ca) - and; अवस्थां (avasthām) - condition; गमितं (gamitam) - brought; सूतपुत्रं (sūtaputram) - the son of a charioteer (Karna); श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā (the Pāṇḍavas); जहृषुः (jahṛṣuḥ) - rejoiced; काननस्थाः (kānanasthāḥ) - dwelling in the forest;]
(Having heard Karna deprived, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, all dispirited, with broken pride, as if were. That condition brought upon the son of a charioteer, having heard, the Pāṇḍavas rejoiced, dwelling in the forest.)
Having heard that Karna was deprived, all the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra became dispirited, as if their pride was broken. Hearing that such a state befell the son of a charioteer, the Pāṇḍavas, dwelling in the forest, rejoiced. (03-294-40)

kvasthā vīrāḥ pāṇḍavās te babhūvuḥ; kutaś caitac chrutavantaḥ priyaṃ te. kiṃ vākārṣur dvādaśe’bde vyatīte; tan me sarvaṃ bhagavān vyākarotu ॥03-294-41॥

(Where are the heroes, the Pāṇḍavas, they became? And from where did you hear this dear thing? What did they do or not do after the twelfth year had passed? That, everything, O Blessed One, may you explain to me.)
Where are the heroic Pāṇḍavas now? From where did you hear this pleasing news? What did they do after the twelfth year had passed? O Blessed One, please explain all this to me. (03-294-41)
