पुनर्द्वैतवनं रम्यमाजगाम युधिष्ठिरः। स्वादुमूलफलं रम्यं मार्कण्डेयाश्रमं प्रति ॥०३-२९५-३॥
punardvaitavanaṃ ramyam ājagāma yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। svādu-mūla-phalaṃ ramyaṃ mārkaṇḍeyāśramaṃ prati ॥03-295-3॥

अनुगुप्तफलाहाराः सर्व एव मिताशनाः। न्यवसन्पाण्डवास्तत्र कृष्णया सह भारत ॥०३-२९५-४॥
anuguptaphalāhārāḥ sarva eva mitāśanāḥ। nyavasan pāṇḍavās tatra kṛṣṇayā saha bhārata॥03-295-4॥

O Bhārata, the Pāṇḍavas, all protected and sustained on fruits and eating moderately, lived there together with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī). (03-295-4)
वसन्द्वैतवने राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। भीमसेनोऽर्जुनश्चैव माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ॥०३-२९५-५॥

While living in the Dvaita forest, King Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī, Bhīmasena, Arjuna, and the two sons of Mādrī, the Pāṇḍavas, were there. (03-295-5)
ब्राह्मणार्थे पराक्रान्ता धर्मात्मानो यतव्रताः। क्लेशमार्छन्त विपुलं सुखोदर्कं परन्तपाः ॥०३-२९५-६॥
brāhmaṇārthe parākrāntā dharmātmāno yatavratāḥ। kleśam ārcchanta vipulaṃ sukhodarkaṃ parantapāḥ॥03-295-6॥
[ब्राह्मणार्थे (brāhmaṇārthe) - for the sake of brāhmaṇas; पराक्रान्ता (parākrāntā) - having exerted; धर्मात्मानः (dharmātmānaḥ) - righteous-souled ones; यतव्रताः (yatavratāḥ) - firm in vows; क्लेेशम् (kleśam) - trouble; आर्च्छन्त (ārcchanta) - undergo; विपुलम् (vipulam) - great; सुखोदर्कम् (sukhodarkam) - having happiness as result; परन्तपाः (parantapāḥ) - destroyers of foes;]
(For the sake of brāhmaṇas, having exerted, the righteous-souled, firm in vows, undergo trouble, great, having happiness as result, destroyers of foes.)
For the sake of brāhmaṇas, the righteous and self-controlled ones, firm in their vows and destroyers of foes, exert themselves and undergo great trouble that ultimately yields happiness. (03-295-6)
अजातशत्रुमासीनं भ्रातृभिः सहितं वने। आगम्य ब्राह्मणस्तूर्णं सन्तप्त इदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-२९५-७॥
ajātaśatrum āsīnam bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitam vane। āgamya brāhmaṇaḥ tūrṇam santapta idam abravīt ॥03-295-7॥

अरणीसहितं मह्यं समासक्तं वनस्पतौ। मृगस्य घर्षमाणस्य विषाणे समसज्जत ॥०३-२९५-८॥
araṇī-sahitaṃ mahyaṃ samāsaktaṃ vanaspatau | mṛgasya gharṣamāṇasya viṣāṇe samasajjata ॥03-295-8॥
[अरणीसहितं (araṇī-sahitam) - with kindling sticks; मर्ह्यं (mahr̥yaṃ) - for me; समासक्तं (samāsaktam) - clinging; वनस्पतौ (vanaspatau) - on a tree; मृगस्य (mṛgasya) - of the deer; घर्षमाणस्य (gharṣamāṇasya) - rubbing; विषाणे (viṣāṇe) - upon the horn; समसज्जत (samasajjata) - became attached;]

तदादाय गतो राजंस्त्वरमाणो महामृगः। आश्रमात्त्वरितः शीघ्रं प्लवमानो महाजवः ॥०३-२९५-९॥
tad-ādāya gato rājaṁs-tvaramāṇo mahāmṛgaḥ। āśramāt-tvaritaḥ śīghraṁ plavamāno mahājavaḥ॥03-295-9॥
[तत् (tat) - that; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; गतः (gataḥ) - went; राजन् (rājan) - O King; त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - hastening; महामृगः (mahāmṛgaḥ) - the great deer; आश्रमात् (āśramāt) - from the hermitage; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - swiftly; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; प्लवमानः (plavamānaḥ) - leaping; महाजवः (mahājavaḥ) - of great speed;]
(Having taken that, the great deer, hastening, O King, went swiftly from the hermitage, quickly leaping, of great speed.)
O King, having taken that, the great deer swiftly departed from the hermitage, leaping quickly with great speed. (03-295-9)
तस्य गत्वा पदं शीघ्रमासाद्य च महामृगम्। अग्निहोत्रं न लुप्येत तदानयत पाण्डवाः ॥०३-२९५-१०॥
tasya gatvā padaṁ śīghram āsādya ca mahāmṛgam। agnihotraṁ na lupyeta tad ānayat pāṇḍavāḥ ॥03-295-10॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; of that; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; पदं (padaṁ) - footstep; place; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; च (ca) - and; महामृगम् (mahāmṛgam) - great animal; अग्निहोत्रं (agnihotraṁ) - agnihotra (sacrificial offering); न (na) - not; लुप्येत (lupyeta) - should be spoiled; should be lost; तदा (tadā) - then; आनयत् (ānayat) - brought; fetched; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Of him, having gone to the place, quickly having reached and the great animal, the agnihotra should not be spoiled, then the Pāṇḍavas brought (it).)
Having quickly gone to that place and reached the great animal, so that the agnihotra would not be spoiled, the Pāṇḍavas then brought it. (03-295-10)
ब्राह्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा सन्तप्तोऽथ युधिष्ठिरः। धनुरादाय कौन्तेयः प्राद्रवद्भ्रातृभिः सह ॥०३-२९५-११॥

After hearing the speech of the brāhmaṇa, the distressed Yudhiṣṭhira, taking up his bow, rushed forward together with his brothers. (03-295-11)
सन्नद्धा धन्विनः सर्वे प्राद्रवन्नरपुङ्गवाः। ब्राह्मणार्थे यतन्तस्ते शीघ्रमन्वगमन्मृगम् ॥०३-२९५-१२॥
sannaddhā dhanvinaḥ sarve prādravan narapuṅgavāḥ. brāhmaṇārthe yatantas te śīghram anv agaman mṛgam ॥03-295-12॥
[सन्नद्धाः (sannaddhāḥ) - armed; ready; धन्विनः (dhanvinaḥ) - bowmen; archers; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्राद्रवन् (prādravan) - ran forward; rushed forth; नरपुङ्गवाः (narapuṅgavāḥ) - leading men; foremost of men; ब्राह्मणार्थे (brāhmaṇārthe) - for the sake of the Brāhmaṇa; यतन्तः (yatantaḥ) - striving; endeavoring; ते (te) - they; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; swiftly; अन्वगमन् (anvagaman) - went after; pursued; मृगम् (mṛgam) - the deer;]

All the leading men, armed with bows, rushed forward; striving for the sake of the Brāhmaṇa, they quickly pursued the deer. (03-295-12)
कर्णिनालीकनाराचानुत्सृजन्तो महारथाः। नाविध्यन्पाण्डवास्तत्र पश्यन्तो मृगमन्तिकात् ॥०३-२९५-१३॥
karṇinālīkanārācān utsṛjanto mahārathāḥ। nāvidhyan pāṇḍavās tatra paśyanto mṛgam antikāt॥03-295-13॥
[कर्णिनालीकनाराचानुत्सृजन्तः (karṇinālīkanārācān utsṛjantaḥ) - ear-tipped-arrows and long-shafted-arrows releasing; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; न (na) - not; अविध्यन् (avidhyan) - pierced (hit with arrows); पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; तत्र (tatra) - there; पश्यन्तः (paśyantaḥ) - seeing; मृगम् (mṛgam) - the deer; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - from nearby;]
(Releasing ear-tipped arrows and long-shafted arrows, the great chariot-warriors did not pierce the deer there, even though the Pāṇḍavas, seeing (it) from nearby.)
The great chariot-warriors, releasing ear-tipped and long-shafted arrows, did not hit the deer there, even though the Pāṇḍavas saw it from close by. (03-295-13)
तेषां प्रयतमानानां नादृश्यत महामृगः। अपश्यन्तो मृगं श्रान्ता दुःखं प्राप्ता मनस्विनः ॥०३-२९५-१४॥
teṣāṃ prayatamānānāṃ nādṛśyata mahāmṛgaḥ। apaśyanto mṛgaṃ śrāntā duḥkhaṃ prāptā manasvinaḥ॥03-295-14॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; प्रयतमानानां (prayatamānānām) - endeavoring; striving; न (na) - not; अदृश्यत (adṛśyata) - appeared; was seen; महामृगः (mahāmṛgaḥ) - great animal; big deer; अपश्यन्तः (apaśyantaḥ) - not seeing; मृगं (mṛgam) - deer; animal; श्रान्ताः (śrāntāḥ) - exhausted; tired; दुःखं (duḥkham) - suffering; pain; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - attained; reached; मनस्विनः (manasvinaḥ) - high-minded ones; spirited;]
(Of them endeavoring, the great animal was not seen. Not seeing the animal, exhausted, suffering, reached (were) the high-minded ones.)
Despite their efforts, the great animal was not seen by them. Unable to find the animal, the high-minded ones became exhausted and suffered. (03-295-14)
शीतलच्छायमासाद्य न्यग्रोधं गहने वने। क्षुत्पिपासापरीताङ्गाः पाण्डवाः समुपाविशन् ॥०३-२९५-१५॥
śītalacchāyam āsādya nyagrodhaṃ gahane vane। kṣutpipāsā-parītāṅgāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ samupāviśan ॥03-295-15॥
[शीतलच्छायम् (śītalacchāyam) - cool shade; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; न्यग्रोधम् (nyagrodham) - banyan tree; गहने (gahane) - dense; वने (vane) - forest; क्षुत्पिपासापरीताङ्गाः (kṣutpipāsā-parītāṅgāḥ) - whose bodies were afflicted by hunger and thirst; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; समुपाविशन् (samupāviśan) - sat down together;]
(Having reached the cool shade, the banyan tree, in the dense forest, whose bodies were afflicted by hunger and thirst, the Pāṇḍavas sat down together.)
The Pāṇḍavas, their bodies overcome by hunger and thirst, reached a banyan tree in the dense forest that offered cool shade, and they sat down there together. (03-295-15)
तेषां समुपविष्टानां नकुलो दुःखितस्तदा। अब्रवीद्भ्रातरं ज्येष्ठममर्षात्कुरुसत्तम ॥०३-२९५-१६॥
teṣāṃ samupaviṣṭānāṃ nakulo duḥkhitas tadā। abravīd bhrātaraṃ jyeṣṭham amarṣāt kurusattama ॥03-295-16॥
[तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; समुपविष्टानां (samupaviṣṭānāṃ) - (while) sitting together; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; दुःखितः (duḥkhitaḥ) - afflicted with sorrow; तदा (tadā) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - to brother; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - elder; अमर्षात् (amarṣāt) - from indignation; कुरुसत्तम (kurusattama) - best of the Kurus;]
(Of them (while) sitting together, Nakula, afflicted with sorrow, then spoke to (his) elder brother from indignation, best of the Kurus.)
As they were all seated together, Nakula, grieved, then spoke with indignation to his eldest brother, the best of the Kurus. (03-295-16)
नास्मिन्कुले जातु ममज्ज धर्मो; न चालस्यादर्थलोपो बभूव। अनुत्तराः सर्वभूतेषु भूयः; सम्प्राप्ताः स्मः संशयं केन राजन् ॥०३-२९५-१७॥
nāsmin kule jātu mamajja dharmo; na ca ālasyāt arthalopo babhūva. anuttarāḥ sarvabhūteṣu bhūyaḥ; samprāptāḥ smaḥ saṃśayaṃ kena rājan ॥03-295-17॥
[न (na) - not; अस्मिन्कुले (asmin kule) - in this lineage; जातु (jātu) - at any time; ममज्ज (mamajja) - sank; धर्मो (dharmo) - dharma; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; आलस्यात् (ālasyāt) - from idleness; अर्थलोपो (arthalopaḥ) - loss of wealth; बभूव (babhūva) - happened; अनुत्तराः (anuttarāḥ) - unanswered (questions); सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - towards all beings; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; सम्प्राप्ताः (samprāptāḥ) - have attained; स्मः (smaḥ) - we are; संशयं (saṃśayam) - doubt; केन (kena) - by what, by whom; राजन् (rājan) - O king;]
(Not in this lineage at any time has dharma sunk; nor from idleness has loss of wealth happened. Unanswered towards all beings again we have attained doubt by whom, O king.)
In this lineage, dharma has never sunk at any time; nor has any loss of wealth occurred due to idleness. Yet again, for all beings, we have encountered a doubt that remains unanswered—by whom, O king? (03-295-17)
