नापदामस्ति मर्यादा न निमित्तं न कारणम्। धर्मस्तु विभजत्यत्र उभयोः पुण्यपापयोः ॥०३-२९६-१॥
nāpadām asti maryādā na nimittaṃ na kāraṇam। dharmas tu vibhajaty atra ubhayoḥ puṇya-pāpayoḥ ॥03-296-1॥

vācastīkṣṇāsthi-bhedinyaḥ sūta-putreṇa bhāṣitāḥ। atitīkṣṇā mayā kṣāntās tena prāptāḥ sma saṁśayam ॥03-296-3॥

I have endured the very sharp, bone-penetrating words spoken by the son of Sūta; because of this, doubt has arisen in him. (03-296-3)

O Bhārata, when Śakuni defeated you by dice-playing, since I did not kill him there, because of that we have now fallen into doubt. (03-296-4)

पानीयमन्तिके पश्य वृक्षान्वाप्युदकाश्रयान्। इमे हि भ्रातरः श्रान्तास्तव तात पिपासिताः ॥०३-२९६-६॥
pānīyam-antike paśya vṛkṣān vā api udaka-āśrayān। ime hi bhrātaraḥ śrāntāḥ tava tāta pipāsitāḥ॥03-296-6॥

(Near water, see trees or also those dwelling by water. These indeed brothers tired, your father, thirsty.)
See, near the water are trees and also trees that grow by water. These brothers of yours, father, are tired and thirsty. (03-296-6)
नकुलस्तु तथेत्युक्त्वा शीघ्रमारुह्य पादपम्। अब्रवीद्भ्रातरं ज्येष्ठमभिवीक्ष्य समन्ततः ॥०३-२९६-७॥
nakulas tu tathety uktvā śīghram āruhya pādapam। abravīd bhrātaraṃ jyeṣṭham abhivīkṣya samantataḥ ॥03-296-7॥
[नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; तु (tu) - but; तथेत्युक्त्वा (tathety uktvā) - having said 'so'; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; आरुह्य (āruhya) - having ascended; पादपम् (pādapam) - tree; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - to (his) brother; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - eldest; अभिवीक्ष्य (abhivīkṣya) - having looked at; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - all around;]
(Nakula but having said 'so' quickly, having ascended (the) tree, said to (his) eldest brother, having looked all around.)
But Nakula, having said 'so', quickly climbed the tree and, looking all around, spoke to his eldest brother. (03-296-7)
पश्यामि बहुलान्राजन्वृक्षानुदकसंश्रयान्। सारसानां च निर्ह्रादमत्रोदकमसंशयम् ॥०३-२९६-८॥
paśyāmi bahulān rājan vṛkṣān udakasaṃśrayān। sārasānāṃ ca nirhrādam atra udakam asaṃśayam॥03-296-8॥
[पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; बहुलान् (bahulān) - many; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वृक्षान् (vṛkṣān) - trees; उदकसंश्रयान् (udakasaṃśrayān) - water-abiding; सारसानाम् (sārasānām) - of cranes; च (ca) - and; निर्ह्रादम् (nirhrādam) - cry, sound; अत्र (atra) - here; उदकम् (udakam) - water; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(I see many, O king, trees abiding near water; and the cry of cranes; here water is without doubt.)
O king, I see many trees near water and hear the cries of cranes; there is certainly water here. (03-296-8)
ततोऽब्रवीत्सत्यधृतिः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। गच्छ सौम्य ततः शीघ्रं तूर्णं पानीयमानय ॥०३-२९६-९॥
tato'bravītsatyadhṛtiḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। gaccha saumya tataḥ śīghraṃ tūrṇaṃ pānīyam ānaya॥03-296-9॥

स दृष्ट्वा विमलं तोयं सारसैः परिवारितम्। पातुकामस्ततो वाचमन्तरिक्षात्स शुश्रुवे ॥०३-२९६-११॥
sa dṛṣṭvā vimalaṃ toyaṃ sārasaiḥ parivāritam। pātukāmas tato vācam antarikṣāt sa śuśruve ॥03-296-11॥

Having seen the clear water surrounded by cranes and desiring to drink, he then heard a voice from the sky. (03-296-11)
मा तात साहसं कार्षीर्मम पूर्वपरिग्रहः। प्रश्नानुक्त्वा तु माद्रेय ततः पिब हरस्व च ॥०३-२९६-१२॥
mā tāta sāhasaṃ kārṣīr mama pūrvaparigrahaḥ। praśnān uktvā tu mādreya tataḥ piba harasva ca॥03-296-12॥

Do not commit any rash act, O dear; I was the former possessor (of it). After asking the questions, O son of Mādrī, then drink and take it.
अनादृत्य तु तद्वाक्यं नकुलः सुपिपासितः। अपिबच्छीतलं तोयं पीत्वा च निपपात ह ॥०३-२९६-१३॥
anādṛtya tu tadvākyaṃ nakulaḥ supipāsitaḥ। apibacchītalaṃ toyaṃ pītvā ca nipapāta ha ॥03-296-13॥

चिरायमाणे नकुले कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। अब्रवीद्भ्रातरं वीरं सहदेवमरिंदमम् ॥०३-२९६-१४॥
cirāyamāṇe nakule kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। abravīdbhrātaraṃ vīraṃ sahadevamariṃdamam ॥03-296-14॥

भ्राता चिरायते तात सहदेव तवाग्रजः। तं चैवानय सोदर्यं पानीयं च त्वमानय ॥०३-२९६-१५॥

(Brother tarries, O dear Sahadeva, your elder brother. Him and indeed bring, own brother, water and you bring.)
O dear Sahadeva, your elder brother is delayed. Bring him, your own brother, here; and you also bring water. (03-296-15)
सहदेवस्तथेत्युक्त्वा तां दिशं प्रत्यपद्यत। ददर्श च हतं भूमौ भ्रातरं नकुलं तदा ॥०३-२९६-१६॥
sahadevas tathety uktvā tāṃ diśaṃ pratyapadyata। dadarśa ca hataṃ bhūmau bhrātaraṃ nakulaṃ tadā ॥03-296-16॥

भ्रातृशोकाभिसन्तप्तस्तृषया च प्रपीडितः। अभिदुद्राव पानीयं ततो वागभ्यभाषत ॥०३-२९६-१७॥
bhrātṛśokābhisantaptaḥ tṛṣayā ca prapīḍitaḥ। abhidudrāva pānīyam tato vāg abhyabhāṣata ॥03-296-17॥

मा तात साहसं कार्षीर्मम पूर्वपरिग्रहः। प्रश्नानुक्त्वा यथाकामं ततः पिब हरस्व च ॥०३-२९६-१८॥

O dear one, do not act rashly; you have my prior consent. After asking your questions, then drink and take as you wish. (03-296-18)
अनादृत्य तु तद्वाक्यं सहदेवः पिपासितः। अपिबच्छीतलं तोयं पीत्वा च निपपात ह ॥०३-२९६-१९॥

अथाब्रवीत्स विजयं कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। भ्रातरौ ते चिरगतौ बीभत्सो शत्रुकर्शन ॥ तौ चैवानय भद्रं ते पानीयं च त्वमानय ॥०३-२९६-२०॥
athābravīts vijayaṃ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhrātarau te ciragatau bībhatso śatrukarśana ॥ tau caiva anaya bhadraṃ te pānīyaṃ ca tvam anaya ॥03-296-20॥

(Then said he Vijaya, son of Kuntī, Yudhiṣṭhira: the two brothers of yours long gone, Bibhatsu, oppressor of foes. The two indeed bring; good (fortune) to you; water also you bring.)
Then Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī, said to Vijaya, "Your two brothers, Bibhatsu and the oppressor of foes, have been gone a long time. Please bring them, and also, bring some water for your good." (03-296-20)
एवमुक्तो गुडाकेशः प्रगृह्य सशरं धनुः। आमुक्तखड्गो मेधावी तत्सरः प्रत्यपद्यत ॥०३-२९६-२१॥
evam-ukto guḍākeśaḥ pragṛhya sa-śaraṃ dhanuḥ। āmukta-khaḍgaḥ medhāvī tat-saraḥ pratyapadyata॥03-296-21॥
[एवमुक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; (having been) spoken thus; गुडाकेशः (guḍākeśaḥ) - Guḍākeśa; (a name for Arjuna); प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken up; सशरं (sa-śaram) - with arrow; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; आमुक्तखड्गः (āmukta-khaḍgaḥ) - with sword girded (on); मेधावी (medhāvī) - wise; तत्सरः (tat-saraḥ) - that arrow; प्रत्यपद्यत (pratyapadyata) - he took up;]
(Thus addressed, Guḍākeśa, having taken up the bow with arrow, with sword girded, the wise one took up that arrow.)
Thus, when addressed, Guḍākeśa (Arjuna), having taken up his bow and arrow, with his sword girded on, the wise one took up that arrow. (03-296-21)
यतः पुरुषशार्दूलौ पानीयहरणे गतौ। तौ ददर्श हतौ तत्र भ्रातरौ श्वेतवाहनः ॥०३-२९६-२२॥
yataḥ puruṣaśārdūlau pānīyaharane gatau। tau dadarśa hatau tatra bhrātarau śvetavāhanaḥ ॥03-296-22॥
[यतः (yataḥ) - because; पुरुषशार्दूलौ (puruṣaśārdūlau) - tiger among men (dual); पानीयहरणे (pānīyaharane) - to fetch water; गतौ (gatau) - had gone (dual); तौ (tau) - those two; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; हतौ (hatau) - killed (dual); तत्र (tatra) - there; भ्रातरौ (bhrātarau) - the brothers (dual); श्वेतवाहनः (śvetavāhanaḥ) - Śvetavāhana;]
(Because the two tigers among men had gone to fetch water, those two, killed, there, the brothers, Śvetavāhana saw.)
Śvetavāhana saw the two brothers, tigers among men, killed there, because they had gone to fetch water. (03-296-22)
प्रसुप्ताविव तौ दृष्ट्वा नरसिंहः सुदुःखितः। धनुरुद्यम्य कौन्तेयो व्यलोकयत तद्वनम् ॥०३-२९६-२३॥
prasuptāviva tau dṛṣṭvā narasiṃhaḥ suduḥkhitaḥ। dhanurudyamya kaunteyo vyalokayat tadvanam ॥03-296-23॥
[प्रसुप्ताविव (prasuptāviva) - like (they were) asleep; तौ (tau) - those two; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; नरसिंहः (narasiṃhaḥ) - lion among men; सुदुःखितः (suduḥkhitaḥ) - very sorrowful; धनु (dhanu) - bow; उद्यम्य (udyamya) - having raised; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; वेलोकयत् (vyalokayat) - looked about; तद् (tad) - that; वनम् (vanam) - forest;]
(Like (they were) asleep those two having seen, the lion among men, very sorrowful, having raised his bow, the son of Kunti looked about that forest.)
Seeing those two as if asleep, the lion among men, exceedingly sorrowful, raised his bow and the son of Kunti surveyed that forest. (03-296-23)
नापश्यत्तत्र किञ्चित्स भूतं तस्मिन्महावने। सव्यसाची ततः श्रान्तः पानीयं सोऽभ्यधावत ॥०३-२९६-२४॥
nāpaśyattatra kiñcit sa bhūtaṃ tasminmahāvane। savyasācī tataḥ śrāntaḥ pānīyaṃ so'bhyadhāvata ॥03-296-24॥
[न (na) - not; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; तत्र (tatra) - there; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; स (sa) - he; भूतं (bhūtam) - being; creature; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; महावने (mahāvane) - great forest; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - Savyasachi (Arjuna, epithet meaning ambidextrous); ततः (tataḥ) - then; श्रान्तः (śrāntaḥ) - tired; पानीयं (pānīyam) - water; सः (saḥ) - he; अभ्यधावत् (abhyadhāvat) - he ran toward;]
(Not saw there anything he being in that great forest. Savyasachi then tired, water he ran toward.)
He did not see any creature there in that great forest. Then Savyasachi, being tired, ran toward the water. (03-296-24)
अभिधावंस्ततो वाचमन्तरिक्षात्स शुश्रुवे। किमासीदसि पानीयं नैतच्छक्यं बलात्त्वया ॥०३-२९६-२५॥
abhidhāvaṁs tato vācam antarikṣāt sa śuśruve. kim āsīd asi pānīyam na etat śakyaṁ balāt tvayā ॥03-296-25॥
[अभिधावन् (abhidhāvan) - running towards; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वाचम् (vācam) - voice; अन्तरिक्षात् (antarikṣāt) - from the sky; सः (saḥ) - he; शुश्रुवे (śuśruve) - heard; किम् (kim) - what; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; असि (asi) - you are; पानीयम् (pānīyam) - water; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; बलात् (balāt) - by force; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Running towards, then a voice from the sky he heard. What was (that)? Are you water? This is not possible by force by you.)
As he was running, then he heard a voice from the sky: "What happened? Are you water? This cannot be achieved by force by you." (03-296-25)
कौन्तेय यदि वै प्रश्नान्मयोक्तान्प्रतिपत्स्यसे। ततः पास्यसि पानीयं हरिष्यसि च भारत ॥०३-२९६-२६॥
kaunteya yadi vai praśnān mayoktān pratipatsyase. tataḥ pāsyasi pānīyaṃ hariṣyasi ca bhārata ॥03-296-26॥
[कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; यदि (yadi) - if; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रश्नान् (praśnān) - questions; मया (mayā) - by me; उक्तान् (uktān) - spoken; प्रतिपत्स्यसे (pratipatsyase) - you will answer; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पास्यसि (pāsyasi) - you will drink; पानीयं (pānīyam) - water; हरिष्यसि (hariṣyasi) - you will take; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(O son of Kunti, if indeed you answer the questions spoken by me, then you will drink water and you will take it, O Bhārata.)
O son of Kunti, if you can answer the questions I have asked, then you will be allowed to drink and take the water, O Bhārata. (3-296-26)
वारितस्त्वब्रवीत्पार्थो दृश्यमानो निवारय। यावद्बाणैर्विनिर्भिन्नः पुनर्नैवं वदिष्यसि ॥०३-२९६-२७॥
vāritas tv abravīt pārtho dṛśyamāno nivāraya. yāvad bāṇair vinirbhinnaḥ punar naivaṁ vadiṣyasi ॥03-296-27॥
[वारितः (vāritaḥ) - warded off; repelled; checked; त्व (tv) - but; then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); दृश्यमानः (dṛśyamānaḥ) - being seen; appearing; निवारय (nivāraya) - restrain; hold back; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; until; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - by arrows; विनिर्भिन्नः (vinirbhinnaḥ) - completely pierced; shattered; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; न (na) - not; एवं (evaṁ) - thus; in this way; वदिष्यसि (vadiṣyasi) - you will speak;]
(Warded off, but then said Pārtha, being seen: 'Restrain (yourself), until, by arrows, completely pierced, again not thus you will speak.')
Warded off, Pārtha (Arjuna), while being seen, said: 'Hold back until you are completely pierced by arrows; then you will not speak like this again.' (03-296-27)
एवमुक्त्वा ततः पार्थः शरैरस्त्रानुमन्त्रितैः। ववर्ष तां दिशं कृत्स्नां शब्दवेधं च दर्शयन् ॥०३-२९६-२८॥
evam uktvā tataḥ pārthaḥ śaraiḥ astrānumantritaiḥ। vavarṣa tāṃ diśaṃ kṛtsnāṃ śabdavedhaṃ ca darśayan ॥03-296-28॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; अस्त्रानुमन्त्रितैः (astrānumantritaiḥ) - endowed with missile mantras; ववर्ष (vavarṣa) - showered; तां (tāṃ) - that; दिशं (diśaṃ) - direction; कृत्स्नां (kṛtsnāṃ) - entire; शब्दवेधं (śabdavedhaṃ) - piercing by sound; च (ca) - and; दर्शयन् (darśayan) - showing;]
(Thus having said, thereafter Pārtha with arrows endowed with missile mantras showered that entire direction, showing piercing by sound and.)
Having thus spoken, then Pārtha (Arjuna) showered that entire direction with arrows empowered by missile mantras, demonstrating the act of piercing by sound. (03-296-28)
कर्णिनालीकनाराचानुत्सृजन्भरतर्षभ। अनेकैरिषुसङ्घातैरन्तरिक्षं ववर्ष ह ॥०३-२९६-२९॥
karṇinālīkanārācān utsṛjan bharatarṣabha. anekair iṣusaṅghātair antarikṣaṁ vavarṣa ha ॥03-296-29॥
[कर्णिनालीकनाराचान् (karṇinālīka-nārācān) - arrow-heads, reed-shafted arrows, broad-headed arrows; उत्सृजन् (utsṛjan) - releasing; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull of the Bharatas; अनेकैः (anekaiḥ) - with many; इषुसङ्घातैः (iṣu-saṅghātaiḥ) - masses of arrows; अन्तरिक्षम् (antarikṣam) - the sky; ववर्ष (vavarṣa) - rained; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Releasing arrow-heads, reed-shafted arrows, and broad-headed arrows, O bull of the Bharatas, with many masses of arrows, he rained the sky indeed.)
O bull of the Bharatas, he released arrow-heads, reed-shafted arrows, and broad-headed arrows, and with many masses of arrows, he rained down upon the sky. (03-296-29)

The yakṣa said.
किं विघातेन ते पार्थ प्रश्नानुक्त्वा ततः पिब। अनुक्त्वा तु ततः प्रश्नान्पीत्वैव न भविष्यसि ॥०३-२९६-३०॥
kiṁ vighātena te pārtha praśnān uktvā tataḥ piba. anuktvā tu tataḥ praśnān pītvā eva na bhaviṣyasi ॥03-296-30॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; विघातेन (vighātena) - with hindrance; ते (te) - for you; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; प्रश्नान् (praśnān) - questions; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having asked; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पिब (piba) - drink; अनुक्त्वा (anuktvā) - without asking; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रश्नान् (praśnān) - questions; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will be;]
(What with hindrance for you, O Pārtha? Having asked questions, then drink. But without asking then questions, having drunk indeed, you will not be.)
What is the obstacle for you, O Pārtha? Ask the questions first, then drink. But if you drink without asking the questions, you will not exist. (03-296-30)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

sa tvamoghāniṣūn muktvā tṛṣṇayābhiprapīḍitaḥ। avijñāyaiva tān praśnān pītvāiva nipapāta ha ॥03-296-31॥
[स (sa) - he; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अम्घानिषून् (amoghāniṣūn) - unfailing arrows; मुक्त्वा (muktvā) - having released; तृष्णया (tṛṣṇayā) - by thirst; अभिप्रपीडितः (abhiprapīḍitaḥ) - greatly afflicted; अविज्ञाय (avijñāya) - without knowing; एव (eva) - indeed; तान् (tān) - those; प्रश्नान् (praśnān) - questions; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; एव (eva) - indeed; निपपात (nipapāta) - he fell down; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(He, you, having released unfailing arrows, greatly afflicted by thirst, without knowing indeed those questions, having drunk indeed, he fell down indeed.)
Thus, having released unfailing arrows, and greatly afflicted by thirst, without even understanding those questions, he drank and immediately fell down. (03-296-31)
अथाब्रवीद्भीमसेनं कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। नकुलः सहदेवश्च बीभत्सुश्चापराजितः ॥०३-२९६-३२॥

(Then said to Bhīmasena, the son of Kuntī, Yudhiṣṭhira. Nakula, Sahadeva and Bībhatsu and the undefeated.)
Then Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, spoke to Bhīmasena. Nakula, Sahadeva, Bībhatsu and the undefeated (Arjuna) were also present. (03-296-32)
चिरं गतास्तोयहेतोर्न चागच्छन्ति भारत। तांश्चैवानय भद्रं ते पानीयं च त्वमानय ॥०३-२९६-३३॥
ciraṃ gatās toya-hetor na cāgacchanti bhārata। tāṃś caiva ānaya bhadraṃ te pānīyaṃ ca tvam ānaya॥03-296-33॥
[चिरं (ciraṃ) - for a long time; गताः (gatāḥ) - gone; तोयहेतोः (toya-hetor) - for the sake of water; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; आगच्छन्ति (āgacchanti) - do (they) return; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तान् (tān) - them; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; आनय (ānaya) - bring; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - welfare; ते (te) - to you; पानीयं (pānīyaṃ) - drinking water; च (ca) - and; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आनय (ānaya) - bring;]
(For a long time gone for the sake of water, and not return, O Bhārata. Them indeed bring, welfare to you, and drinking water you bring.)
O Bhārata, those who have gone for water have not returned for a long time; kindly bring them, and you bring drinking water as well. (03-296-33)
भीमसेनस्तथेत्युक्त्वा तां दिशं प्रत्यपद्यत। यत्र ते पुरुषव्याघ्रा भ्रातरोऽस्य निपातिताः ॥०३-२९६-३४॥
bhīmasenas tathety uktvā tāṃ diśaṃ pratyapadyata। yatra te puruṣavyāghrā bhrātaro'sya nipātitāḥ॥03-296-34॥
[भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; (proper noun, subject); तथेत्युक्त्वा (tathety uktvā) - having said 'so'; तां (tāṃ) - that (fem. accusative singular); दिशं (diśaṃ) - direction; प्रत्यपद्यत (pratyapadyata) - proceeded; approached; यत्र (yatra) - where; ते (te) - those; पुरुषव्याघ्राः (puruṣavyāghrāḥ) - tigers among men; heroic men; brothers; (Bahuvrīhi compound); भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; (plural nominative); अस्य (asya) - his; of him; निपातिताः (nipātitāḥ) - had been struck down; had fallen;]
(Bhīmasena, having said 'so', proceeded toward that direction, where those tigers among men, his brothers, had been struck down.)
Bhīmasena, saying 'so', went in the direction where his brothers—those tigers among men—had been slain. (03-296-34)
तान्दृष्ट्वा दुःखितो भीमस्तृषया च प्रपीडितः। अमन्यत महाबाहुः कर्म तद्यक्षरक्षसाम् ॥ स चिन्तयामास तदा योद्धव्यं ध्रुवमद्य मे ॥०३-२९६-३५॥
tān dṛṣṭvā duḥkhito bhīmas tṛṣayā ca prapīḍitaḥ। amanyata mahābāhuḥ karma tadyakṣarakṣasām॥ sa cintayāmāsa tadā yoddhavyaṃ dhruvam adya me॥03-296-35॥
[तान् (tān) - them; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; दुःखितः (duḥkhitaḥ) - afflicted; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; तृषया (tṛṣayā) - by thirst; च (ca) - and; प्रपीडितः (prapīḍitaḥ) - tormented; अमन्यत (amanyata) - considered; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed (one); कर्म (karma) - act; तत् (tat) - that; यक्षरक्षसाम् (yakṣarakṣasām) - of the yakṣas and rākṣasas; सः (saḥ) - he; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - thought; तदा (tadā) - then; योद्धव्यम् (yoddhavyaṃ) - is to be fought; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; अद्य (adya) - today; मे (me) - for me;]
(Having seen them, afflicted Bhima, tormented also by thirst, considered that act as that of the yakṣas and rākṣasas. He thought then, "It is certainly to be fought today by me." (03-296-35))
Seeing them, the sorrowful Bhima, tormented by thirst, considered the act to be that of the yakṣas and rākṣasas. Then the mighty-armed thought, "Surely, today I must fight." (03-296-35)
पास्यामि तावत्पानीयमिति पार्थो वृकोदरः। ततोऽभ्यधावत्पानीयं पिपासुः पुरुषर्षभः ॥०३-२९६-३६॥
pāsyāmi tāvatpānīyamiti pārtho vṛkodaraḥ। tato'bhyadhāvatpānīyaṃ pipāsuḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ॥03-296-36॥
[पास्यामि (pāsyāmi) - I shall drink; तावत् (tāvat) - just then; पानीयम् (pānīyam) - water; इति (iti) - thus; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभ्यधावत् (abhyadhāvat) - he ran towards; पानीयम् (pānīyam) - water; पिपासुः (pipāsuḥ) - thirsty; पुरुषर्षभः (puruṣarṣabhaḥ) - bull among men;]
(I shall drink just then water—thus Pārtha, Vṛkodara (said). Then ran towards the water, thirsty, bull among men.)
Pārtha, Vṛkodara, said, "I shall now drink water." Then the bull among men, thirsty, ran towards the water. (03-296-36)

[मा (mā) - do not; तात (tāta) - O dear son; साहसं (sāhasam) - rash deed; कार्षीः (kārṣīḥ) - perform; मम (mama) - my; पूर्वपरिग्रहः (pūrvaparigrahaḥ) - former acceptance; प्रश्नान् (praśnān) - questions; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पिब (piba) - drink; हरस्व (harasva) - take; च (ca) - and;]
(Do not, O dear son, perform a rash deed; my former acceptance; having spoken questions, but O son of Kunti, then drink and take.)
Do not, O dear son, act rashly out of my former acceptance; but, O son of Kunti, after asking questions, then drink and take. (03-296-37)

(Thus addressed then Bhima by the Yakṣa of immeasurable brilliance, without understanding indeed those questions, having drunk indeed, fell down indeed.)
Thus, when addressed by the Yakṣa of immeasurable brilliance, Bhima, having drunk without understanding those questions, fell down. (03-296-38)

उपेतं नलिनीजालैः सिन्धुवारैश्च वेतसैः। केतकैः करवीरैश्च पिप्पलैश्चैव संवृतम् ॥ श्रमार्तस्तदुपागम्य सरो दृष्ट्वाथ विस्मितः ॥०३-२९६-४३॥
