sa dīrghamuṣṇaṃ niḥśvasya śokabāṣpapariplutaḥ. buddhyā vicintayāmāsa vīrāḥ kena nipātitāḥ ॥03-297-3॥
[स (sa) - he; दीर्घमुष्णम् (dīrghamuṣṇam) - long and warm (breath); निःश्वस्य (niḥśvasya) - having exhaled; शोकबाष्पपरिप्लुतः (śokabāṣpapariplutaḥ) - immersed in (with) sorrowful tears; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; विचिन्तयामास (vicintayāmāsa) - he considered; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - the heroes; केन (kena) - by whom; निपातिताः (nipātitāḥ) - were struck down;]
(He, having breathed out a long warm breath, immersed in tears of sorrow, by intellect considered: the heroes by whom were struck down?)
He, letting out a long, warm sigh and overwhelmed by tears of sorrow, pondered with his intellect: by whom have the heroes been slain? (03-297-3)
नैषां शस्त्रप्रहारोऽस्ति पदं नेहास्ति कस्यचित्। भूतं महदिदं मन्ये भ्रातरो येन मे हताः ॥ एकाग्रं चिन्तयिष्यामि पीत्वा वेत्स्यामि वा जलम् ॥०३-२९७-४॥
naiṣāṃ śastraprahāro'sti padaṃ nehāsti kasyacit. bhūtaṃ mahadidaṃ manye bhrātaro yena me hatāḥ ॥ ekāgraṃ cintayiṣyāmi pītvā vetsyāmi vā jalam ॥03-297-4॥
[नैषां (naiṣām) - for these there is not; शस्त्रप्रहारः (śastra-prahāraḥ) - weapon-strike; अस्ति (asti) - exists; पदं (padaṃ) - place; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; अस्ति (asti) - exists; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of anyone; भूतं (bhūtaṃ) - occurred; महद् (mahat) - great; इदं (idaṃ) - this; मन्न्ये (manye) - I think; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; येन (yena) - by whom; मे (me) - my; हताः (hatāḥ) - slain; एकाग्रं (ekāgram) - one-pointed; चिन्तयिष्यामि (cintayiṣyāmi) - I shall think; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; वेत्स्यामि (vetsyāmi) - I shall know; वा (vā) - or; जलम् (jalam) - water;]
(For these there is not weapon-strike; place not here exists for anyone. Occurred great this I think, brothers by whom my slain. One-pointed I shall think; having drunk I shall know or water.)
There is no influence of weapons on these; there is no place here for anyone. I think that this is a great calamity by which my brothers have been slain. I shall contemplate with one-pointed mind, or know (what has happened) after drinking water. (3-297-4)
स्यात्तु दुर्योधनेनेदमुपांशुविहितं कृतम्। गान्धारराजरचितं सततं जिह्मबुद्धिना ॥०३-२९७-५॥
syāttu duryodhanenedamupāṁśuvihitaṁ kṛtam। gāndhārarājaracitaṁ satataṁ jihmabuddhinā ॥03-297-5॥
[स्यात् (syāt) - it may be; तु (tu) - but; दुर्योधनेन (duryodhanena) - by Duryodhana; इदम् (idam) - this; उपांशु-विहितम् (upāṁśu-vihitam) - secretly done; कृतम् (kṛtam) - made; गान्धारराज-रचितम् (gāndhārarājaracitam) - composed by the king of Gandhara; सततम् (satatam) - constantly; जिह्मबुद्धिना (jihmabuddhinā) - by one of crooked mind;]
(But it may be that this was secretly done, made by Duryodhana, constantly composed by the king of Gandhara, by one of crooked mind.)

यस्य कार्यमकार्यं वा सममेव भवत्युत। कस्तस्य विश्वसेद्वीरो दुर्मतेरकृतात्मनः ॥०३-२९७-६॥
yasya kāryam akāryaṃ vā samam eva bhavatyuṭa। kas tasya viśvased vīro durmater akṛtātmanaḥ ॥03-297-6॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; कार्यम् (kāryam) - to be done; अकार्यं (akāryam) - not to be done; वा (vā) - or; समम् (samam) - equal; एव (eva) - indeed; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; उत (uta) - indeed; कः (kaḥ) - who; तस्य (tasya) - in him; विश्वसेत् (viśvaset) - could trust; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; दुर्मतेः (durmateḥ) - of the evil-minded; अकृतात्मनः (akṛtātmanaḥ) - of the undisciplined self;]
(Of whom action and inaction or (both) indeed become equal, who could indeed trust in him, a hero, of the evil-minded, of the undisciplined self?)
Who would place trust in one, O hero, for whom what should be done and not done are the same indeed? In one with an undisciplined self and an evil mind, who could trust? (03-297-6)
अथ वा पुरुषैर्गूढैः प्रयोगोऽयं दुरात्मनः। भवेदिति महाबाहुर्बहुधा समचिन्तयत् ॥०३-२९७-७॥
atha vā puruṣair gūḍhaiḥ prayogo'yaṃ durātmanaḥ। bhaved iti mahābāhur bahudhā samacintayat ॥03-297-7॥
[अथ (atha) - now then; वा (vā) - or; पुरुषैः (puruṣaiḥ) - by men; गूढैः (gūḍhaiḥ) - hidden; प्रयोगः (prayogaḥ) - scheme; अयम् (ayam) - this; दुरात्मनः (durātmanaḥ) - of the wicked one; भवेत् (bhavet) - might be; इति (iti) - thus; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed one; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; समचिन्तयत् (samacintayat) - considered;]
(Now then, or by men hidden, scheme this of the wicked one might be, thus the mighty-armed one in many ways considered.)
Now, the mighty-armed one considered in many ways, thinking, "Or perhaps this scheme of the wicked one might have been carried out in secret by men." (03-297-7)
तस्यासीन्न विषेणेदमुदकं दूषितं यथा। मुखवर्णाः प्रसन्ना मे भ्रातॄणामित्यचिन्तयत् ॥०३-२९७-८॥
tasyāsīn na viṣeṇedamudakaṃ dūṣitaṃ yathā। mukhavarṇāḥ prasannā me bhrātṝṇāmityacintayat ॥03-297-8॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; न (na) - not; विषेण (viṣeṇa) - by poison; इदम् (idam) - this; उदकम् (udakam) - water; दूषितम् (dūṣitam) - polluted; यथा (yathā) - as; मुखवर्णाः (mukhavarṇāḥ) - complexions; प्रसन्नाः (prasannāḥ) - bright; मे (me) - my; भ्रातॄणाम् (bhrātṝṇām) - of brothers; इति (iti) - thus; अचिन्तयत् (acintayat) - he thought;]
(His was not by poison this water polluted as (because) complexions bright my brothers thus he thought.)
He thought, "Since my brothers' complexions are bright, this water was not polluted by poison." (03-297-8)
एकैकशश्चौघबलानिमान्पुरुषसत्तमान्। कोऽन्यः प्रतिसमासेत कालान्तकयमादृते ॥०३-२९७-९॥
ekaikaśaś ca ughabalānimān puruṣasattamān। ko'nyaḥ pratisamāseta kālāntakayamādṛte॥03-297-9॥
[एकैकशः (ekaikaśaḥ) - one by one; separately; च (ca) - and; ओघबलान् (oghabalān) - of the flood-like strength; possessing great strength; इमान् (imān) - these; पुरुषसत्तमान् (puruṣasattamān) - best of men; foremost men; कः (kaḥ) - who; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; प्रतिसमासेत (pratisamāseta) - could match; could face; कालान्तकयमादृते (kālāntakayamādṛte) - except for Kāla (Death), Antaka (Destroyer/Ender), and Yama (Lord of Death);]
(One by one, and these best of men possessing great strength, who other could match except for Kāla, Antaka, and Yama?)
Individually, who else except Kāla, Antaka, or Yama could match these foremost men of immense strength? (03-297-9)
एतेनाध्यवसायेन तत्तोयमवगाढवान्। गाहमानश्च तत्तोयमन्तरिक्षात्स शुश्रुवे ॥०३-२९७-१०॥
etena adhyavasāyena tat toyam avagāḍhavān। gāhamānaś ca tat toyam antarikṣāt sa śuśruve ॥03-297-10॥
[एतेन (etena) - by this; by means of this; अध्यवसायेन (adhyavasāyena) - by determination; by resolute effort; तत् (tat) - that; तोयम् (toyam) - water; अवगाढवान् (avagāḍhavān) - he plunged into; he entered deeply; गाहमानः (gāhamānaḥ) - immersing; plunging; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; तोयम् (toyam) - water; अन्तरिक्षात् (antarikṣāt) - from the sky; from the atmosphere; सः (saḥ) - he; शुश्रुवे (śuśruve) - heard; ॥०३-२९७-१०॥ (॥03-297-10॥) - ;]
(By this determination, he plunged into that water. And while immersing in that water, from the sky, he heard.)
By means of this resolute effort, he entered that water; and while immersing himself in that water, he heard (something) from the sky. (03-297-10)

अहं बकः शैवलमत्स्यभक्षो; मया नीताः प्रेतवशं तवानुजाः। त्वं पञ्चमो भविता राजपुत्र; न चेत्प्रश्नान्पृच्छतो व्याकरोषि ॥०३-२९७-११॥
ahaṃ bakaḥ śaivalam-atsya-bhakṣaḥ; mayā nītāḥ pretavaśaṃ tavā-nujāḥ. tvaṃ pañcamaḥ bhavitā rājaputra; na cet praśnān pṛcchataḥ vyākaroṣi ॥03-297-11॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; बकः (bakaḥ) - heron; शैवलमत्स्यभक्षः (śaivala-matsya-bhakṣaḥ) - eater of moss and fish; मया (mayā) - by me; नीताः (nītāḥ) - led; प्रेतवशं (pretavaśam) - to the control of the dead; तव (tava) - your; अनुजाः (anujāḥ) - younger brothers; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पञ्चमः (pañcamaḥ) - fifth; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; राजपुत्र (rājaputra) - prince; न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; प्रश्नान् (praśnān) - questions; पृच्छतः (pṛcchataḥ) - to (me) asking; व्याकरोषि (vyākaroṣi) - you answer;]
(I heron eater of moss and fish; by me led to the control of the dead your younger brothers. You the fifth will be, prince; if you do not answer the questions (of me) asking.)
I am the heron who eats moss and fish; your younger brothers have been led by me to the realm of the dead. Prince, you will be the fifth if you do not answer the questions I ask. (03-297-11)
मा तात साहसं कार्षीर्मम पूर्वपरिग्रहः। प्रश्नानुक्त्वा तु कौन्तेय ततः पिब हरस्व च ॥०३-२९७-१२॥
mā tāta sāhasaṃ kārṣīr mama pūrvaparigrahaḥ। praśnān uktvā tu kaunteya tataḥ piba harasva ca ॥03-297-12॥
[मा (mā) - do not; तात (tāta) - O dear one; साहसं (sāhasam) - rash act; कार्षीः (kārṣīḥ) - (you) perform; मम (mama) - my; पूर्वपरिग्रहः (pūrvaparigrahaḥ) - prior claim; प्रश्नान् (praśnān) - questions; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पिब (piba) - drink; हरस्व (harasva) - enjoy; च (ca) - and;]
(Do not, O dear one, perform a rash act; my prior claim (exists). Having asked questions, but, O Kaunteya, then drink and enjoy.)
O dear one, do not act rashly; I have a prior claim. But, O son of Kunti, after asking questions, then drink and enjoy. (03-297-12)

[रुद्राणां (rudrāṇām) - of the Rudras; वा (vā) - or; वसूनां (vasūnām) - of the Vasus; वा (vā) - or; मरुतां (marutām) - of the Maruts; वा (vā) - or; प्रधानभाक् (pradhānabhāk) - the principal partaker; पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; कः (kaḥ) - who; भवान् (bhavān) - you; देवः (devaḥ) - divine one; god; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; शकुनिना (śakunina) - by omen; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done;]
(Of the Rudras or of the Vasus or of the Maruts or the principal partaker; I ask, who are you, O divine one? This was not done by omen.)
Are you the principal among the Rudras, the Vasus, or the Maruts? I ask, who are you, O divine one? This was not an act done by omen. (03-297-13)
हिमवान्पारियात्रश्च विन्ध्यो मलय एव च। चत्वारः पर्वताः केन पातिता भुवि तेजसा ॥०३-२९७-१४॥
himavānpāriyātraśca vindhyo malaya eva ca। catvāraḥ parvatāḥ kena pātitā bhuvi tejasā॥03-297-14॥
[हिमवान् (himavān) - the Himavat (Himalaya); पारियात्रः (pāriyātraḥ) - the Pāriyātra (mountain); च (ca) - and; विन्ध्यः (vindhyaḥ) - the Vindhya (mountain); मलयः (malayaḥ) - the Malaya (mountain); एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; पर्वताः (parvatāḥ) - mountains; केन (kena) - by whom; पातिताः (pātitāḥ) - cast down; overthrown; भुवि (bhuvi) - upon the earth; तेजसा (tejasā) - by (whose) splendor;]
(Himavat, Pāriyātra, and Vindhya, Malaya indeed and; four mountains by whom cast down upon the earth by splendor?)
Who, by their splendor, cast down these four mountains—Himavat, Pāriyātra, Vindhya, and Malaya—upon the earth? (03-297-14)
अतीव ते महत्कर्म कृतं बलवतां वर। यन्न देवा न गन्धर्वा नासुरा न च राक्षसाः ॥ विषहेरन्महायुद्धे कृतं ते तन्महाद्भुतम् ॥०३-२९७-१५॥
atīva te mahatkarma kṛtaṃ balavatāṃ vara। yan na devā na gandharvā nāsurā na ca rākṣasāḥ ॥ viṣaheran mahāyuddhe kṛtaṃ te tan mahādbhutam ॥03-297-15॥
[अतीव (atīva) - excessively; extraordinarily; ते (te) - your; महत्कर्म (mahatkarma) - great deed; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - has been done; बलवतां (balavatām) - of the mighty; वर (vara) - chief; best; यत् (yat) - which; न (na) - not; देवा (devā) - the gods; न (na) - not; गन्धर्वा (gandharvā) - gandharvas; न (na) - not; असुरा (asurā) - asuras; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; विषहेरन् (viṣaheran) - could withstand; महायुद्धे (mahāyuddhe) - in great battle; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; ते (te) - by you; तत् (tat) - that; महाद्भुतम् (mahādbhutam) - greatly wonderful; extraordinary;]
(Excessively your great deed has been done, O chief of the mighty; which not the gods, nor the gandharvas, nor the asuras, nor even the rākṣasas could withstand in great battle; that done by you is greatly wonderful.)
You have accomplished an extraordinarily great deed, O foremost of the mighty; that act which neither the gods, nor the gandharvas, nor the asuras, nor even the rākṣasas could withstand in the great battle—what you have done is truly extraordinary. (03-297-15)
न ते जानामि यत्कार्यं नाभिजानामि काङ्क्षितम्। कौतूहलं महज्जातं साध्वसं चागतं मम ॥०३-२९७-१६॥
na te jānāmi yat kāryam nābhijānāmi kāṅkṣitam। kautūhalam mahat jātam sādhvasam ca āgatam mama ॥03-297-16॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; यत् (yat) - what; कार्यं (kāryam) - purpose; न (na) - not; अभिजानामि (abhijānāmi) - I understand; काङ्क्षितम् (kāṅkṣitam) - desired; कौतूहलं (kautūhalam) - curiosity; महत् (mahat) - great; जातं (jātam) - arisen; साध्वसम् (sādhvasam) - fear; च (ca) - and; आगतं (āgatam) - come; मम (mama) - to me;]
(Not your I know what purpose, not I understand desired. Curiosity great arisen, fear and come to me.)
I do not know what your purpose is, nor do I understand what is desired. Great curiosity has arisen, and fear has also come to me. (03-297-16)
येनास्म्युद्विग्नहृदयः समुत्पन्नशिरोज्वरः। पृच्छामि भगवंस्तस्मात्को भवानिह तिष्ठति ॥०३-२९७-१७॥
yenāsm yudvigna-hṛdayaḥ samutpanna-śirojvaraḥ। pṛcchāmi bhagavaṃs tasmāt ko bhavān iha tiṣṭhati॥03-297-17॥
[येन (yena) - by whom; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; उद्विग्नहृदयः (udvigna-hṛdayaḥ) - with agitated heart; समुत्पन्नशिरोज्वरः (samutpanna-śiro-jvaraḥ) - with arisen headache; पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - for that reason; कः (kaḥ) - who; भवान् (bhavān) - yourself; इह (iha) - here; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains;]
(By whom I am with agitated heart, with arisen headache, I ask, O venerable one, for that reason, who yourself here remains?)
O venerable one, because I am agitated at heart and have developed a headache on account of someone, I ask you, who are you who is standing here? (03-297-17)

yakṣo’hamasmi bhadraṁ te nāsmi pakṣī jale-caraḥ। mayā ete nihatāḥ sarve bhrātaraḥ te mahā-ojasāḥ ॥03-297-18॥

tatastāmaśivāṁ śrutvā vācaṁ sa paruṣākṣarām। yakṣasya bruvato rājannupakramya tadā sthitaḥ॥03-297-19॥

O king, these brothers of yours, though I repeatedly tried to restrain them, desired to take water by force, and therefore I killed them. (03-297-22)
न पेयमुदकं राजन्प्राणानिह परीप्सता। पार्थ मा साहसं कार्षीर्मम पूर्वपरिग्रहः ॥ प्रश्नानुक्त्वा तु कौन्तेय ततः पिब हरस्व च ॥०३-२९७-२३॥

I do not wish, Yakṣa, for your former attachment. Truly, good people never praise such things, for men never approve this. (03-297-24)
यदात्मना स्वमात्मानं प्रशंसेत्पुरुषः प्रभो। यथाप्रज्ञं तु ते प्रश्नान्प्रतिवक्ष्यामि पृच्छ माम् ॥०३-२९७-२५॥

(What indeed lifts up the sun? And who are the movers around him? And who leads him to setting? And in what does he rest?)
What truly raises the sun? Who circles around him? Who leads him to setting? And in what does he abide? (03-297-26)

(The Veda leads the sun up; the gods (are) its surrounding movers. And dharma leads (the sun) to setting, and stands firmly in truth.)

यस्य नागसहस्रेण दशसङ्ख्येन वै बलम्। तुल्यं तं भीममुत्सृज्य नकुलं जीवमिच्छसि ॥०३-२९७-६८॥

[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; नागसहस्रेण (nāga-sahasreṇa) - by a thousand elephants; दशसङ्ख्येन (daśa-saṅkhyena) - by the number ten; वै (vai) - indeed; बलम् (balam) - strength; तुल्यं (tulyaṃ) - equal; तं (taṃ) - him; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhīma; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - leaving aside; नकुलं (nakulaṃ) - Nakula; जीवम् (jīvam) - life; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
(Of whom, by a thousand elephants, (and) by the number ten, indeed, (is his) strength; (him) equal (to that), abandoning Bhīma, (for) Nakula, (for his) life, you desire.)
Abandoning Bhīma, whose strength is indeed equal to that of ten thousand elephants, you desire the life of Nakula. (03-297-68)
तथैनं मनुजाः प्राहुर्भीमसेनं प्रियं तव। अथ केनानुभावेन सापत्नं जीवमिच्छसि ॥०३-२९७-६९॥
tathainaṃ manujāḥ prāhurbhīmasenaṃ priyaṃ tava। atha kenānubhāvena sāpatnaṃ jīvamicchasi ॥03-297-69॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; एनम् (enam) - him; मनुजाः (manujāḥ) - men; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - said; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; तव (tava) - to you; अथ (atha) - then; केन (kena) - by what; अनुभावेन (anubhāvena) - power; सापत्नम् (sāpatnam) - with a rival; जीवम् (jīvam) - life; इच्छसि (icchasi) - do you desire;]
(Thus, men said to Bhīmasena, dear to you. Then, by what power do you desire life with a rival?)
Thus, men said to Bhīmasena, who is dear to you, "So, by what power do you wish to live with a rival?" (3-297-69)
यस्य बाहुबलं सर्वे पाण्डवाः समुपाश्रिताः। अर्जुनं तमपाहाय नकुलं जीवमिच्छसि ॥०३-२९७-७०॥
yasya bāhubalaṃ sarve pāṇḍavāḥ samupāśritāḥ। arjunaṃ tam apāhāya nakulaṃ jīvam icchasi॥03-297-70॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; बाहुबलं (bāhubalam) - arm strength; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; समुपाश्रिताः (samupāśritāḥ) - have entirely taken refuge; अर्जुनं (arjunam) - Arjuna; तम् (tam) - him; अपाहाय (apāhāya) - abandoning; नकुलं (nakulam) - Nakula; जीवम् (jīvam) - life; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
(Whose arm strength all the Pāṇḍavas have entirely taken refuge in, abandoning Arjuna, you desire the life of Nakula.)
Whose arm strength all the Pāṇḍavas have relied upon, having abandoned Arjuna, you seek to save Nakula's life. (03-297-70)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

Yudhiṣṭhira said.
आनृशंस्यं परो धर्मः परमार्थाच्च मे मतम्। आनृशंस्यं चिकीर्षामि नकुलो यक्ष जीवतु ॥०३-२९७-७१॥
ānṛśaṁsyaṁ paro dharmaḥ paramārthāc ca me matam। ānṛśaṁsyaṁ cikīrṣāmi nakulo yakṣa jīvatu॥03-297-71॥
[आनृशंस्यं (ānṛśaṁsyaṁ) - non-cruelty; compassion; kindness; परः (paraḥ) - supreme; highest; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; righteousness; परमार्थात् (paramārthāt) - than the highest good; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; मतम् (matam) - opinion; आनृशंस्यं (ānṛśaṁsyaṁ) - non-cruelty; compassion; चिकीर्षामि (cikīrṣāmi) - I wish to do; I desire to perform; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; यक्ष (yakṣa) - Yaksha; (addressing the Yaksha); जीवतु (jīvatu) - may live; let live;]
(Non-cruelty is the supreme duty; and this is my opinion, than even the highest good. Non-cruelty I wish to do; let Nakula, O Yaksha, live.)
Non-cruelty is the highest duty—this is my belief, superior even to the greatest good. I wish to act with compassion; O Yaksha, let Nakula live. (03-297-71)
धर्मशीलः सदा राजा इति मां मानवा विदुः। स्वधर्मान्न चलिष्यामि नकुलो यक्ष जीवतु ॥०३-२९७-७२॥
dharmaśīlaḥ sadā rājā iti māṃ mānavā viduḥ। svadharmān na cariṣyāmi nakulo yakṣa jīvatu॥03-297-72॥
[धर्मशीलः (dharmaśīlaḥ) - of righteous disposition; upright; सदा (sadā) - always; राजा (rājā) - the king; इति (iti) - thus; so; माम् (mām) - me; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - men; people; विदुः (viduḥ) - (they) know; स्वधर्मात् (svadharmāt) - from one's own duty; न (na) - not; चलिष्यामि (cariṣyāmi) - I shall turn aside; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; यक्ष (yakṣa) - Yaksha; जीवतु (jīvatu) - may he live;]
(Of righteous disposition always the king, thus me men know. From (my) own duty not I shall turn aside, Nakula. Yaksha, may he live.)
Men always know me as a king of righteous disposition. I will not turn away from my own duty, Nakula. Yaksha, may he live. (03-297-72)
यथा कुन्ती तथा माद्री विशेषो नास्ति मे तयोः। मातृभ्यां सममिच्छामि नकुलो यक्ष जीवतु ॥०३-२९७-७३॥
yathā kuntī tathā mādrī viśeṣo nāsti me tayoḥ। mātṛbhyāṁ samam icchāmi nakulo yakṣa jīvatu ॥03-297-73॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; तथा (tathā) - so; माद्री (mādrī) - Mādrī; विशेषः (viśeṣaḥ) - distinction; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; मे (me) - for me; तयोः (tayoḥ) - between those two; मातृभ्याम् (mātṛbhyām) - between the two mothers; समम् (samam) - equally; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakulā; यक्ष (yakṣa) - Yakṣa; जीवतु (jīvatu) - let him live;]
(Just as Kuntī, so Mādrī, distinction does not exist for me between those two. Between the two mothers equally I wish, Nakula, Yakṣa, let him live.)
Just as there is no distinction for me between Kuntī and Mādrī, so among the two mothers I wish equally — Yakṣa, let Nakula live. (03-297-73)
यक्ष उवाच॥

[यक्ष (yakṣa) - Yakṣa (a class of celestial beings); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

The Yakṣa said;
यस्य तेऽर्थाच्च कामाच्च आनृशंस्यं परं मतम्। तस्मात्ते भ्रातरः सर्वे जीवन्तु भरतर्षभ ॥०३-२९७-७४॥
yasya te'rthāc ca kāmāc ca ānṛśaṁsyaṁ paraṁ matam। tasmāt te bhrātaraḥ sarve jīvantu bharatarṣabha ॥03-297-74॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; ते (te) - to you; अर्थात् (arthāt) - from wealth; च (ca) - and; कामात् (kāmāt) - from desire; च (ca) - and; आनृशंस्यं (ānṛśaṁsyaṁ) - compassion; परं (paraṁ) - supreme; मतम् (matam) - regarded; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ते (te) - for you; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; सर्वे (sarve) - all; जीवन्तु (jīvantu) - may live; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull of the Bharatas;]
(Whose for you from wealth and from desire compassion supreme is regarded; therefore for you brothers all may live, O bull of the Bharatas.)
For whom, to you, compassion is esteemed as supreme over wealth and desire; therefore, let all your brothers live, O best of the Bharatas. (03-297-74)
