kiṁ tvaṁ nakula kurvāṇas tatra tāta cariṣyasi। sukumāraś ca śūraś ca darśanīyaḥ sukhocitaḥ ॥04-3-1॥

(What you, Nakula, doing there, dear one, will act? Very tender and brave and handsome, accustomed to comfort.)

Dear Nakula, what will you do there? You are tender, brave, and handsome, and accustomed to comfort. (04-3-1)

aśvabandho bhaviṣyāmi virāṭanṛpater aham। granthiko nāma nāmnāhaṃ karmaitat supri yaṃ mama ॥04-3-2॥

कुशलोऽस्म्यश्वशिक्षायां तथैवाश्वचिकित्सिते। प्रियाश्च सततं मेऽश्वाः कुरुराज यथा तव ॥०४-३-३॥

kuśalo'smy aśvaśikṣāyāṃ tathaivāśvacikitsite. priyāś ca satataṃ me'śvāḥ kururāja yathā tava ॥04-3-3॥

[कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - skilled; expert; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अश्वशिक्षायाम् (aśvaśikṣāyām) - in the training of horses; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; in the same manner; अश्वचिकित्सिते (aśvacikitsite) - in treatment/healing of horses; प्रियाः (priyāḥ) - dear; beloved; च (ca) - and; सततम् (satatam) - always; constantly; मे (me) - to me; my; अश्वाः (aśvāḥ) - horses; कुरुराज (kururāja) - king of the Kurus; यथा (yathā) - just as; as; तव (tava) - to you; to your;]

(Skilled I am in the training of horses, likewise in the healing of horses. Dear and always to me (are) horses, O king of the Kurus, just as to you.)

I am skilled in training horses and also in treating their ailments. Horses are always dear to me, O king of the Kurus, just as they are to you. (04-3-3)

ये मामामन्त्रयिष्यन्ति विराटनगरे जनाः। तेभ्य एवं प्रवक्ष्यामि विहरिष्याम्यहं यथा ॥०४-३-४॥

ye mām āmantrayişyanti virāṭanagare janāḥ। tebhya evaṃ pravakṣyāmi vihariṣyāmyahaṃ yathā॥04-3-4॥

(Who me will invite in the city of Virāṭa people; to them thus I will say—I will live as I (intend).)

To those people who invite me in the city of Virāṭa, I will thus speak; I will live as I (intend). (04-3-4)

gosaṅkhyātā bhaviṣyāmi virāṭasya mahīpateḥ। pratiṣeddhā ca dogdhā ca saṅkhyāne kuśalo gavām ॥04-3-6॥

[गोसङ्ख्याता (go-saṅkhyātā) - one who counts cows; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I shall become; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; महीपतेः (mahīpateḥ) - of the king (lit. lord of the earth); प्रतिषेद्धा (pratiṣeddhā) - one who prevents; च (ca) - and; दोग्धा (dogdhā) - milker (one who milks cows); च (ca) - and; सङ्ख्याने (saṅkhyāne) - in counting; कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - skilled; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows;]

(I shall become the cow-counter of Virāṭa, the king; and one who prevents and (also) the milker, skilled in the accounting of cows.)

I will serve as the cow-counter for King Virāṭa; I will be the one to guard and milk the cows, skilled in their enumeration. (04-3-6)

तन्तिपाल इति ख्यातो नाम्ना विदितमस्तु ते। निपुणं च चरिष्यामि व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥०४-३-७॥

tantipāla iti khyāto nāmnā viditam astu te। nipuṇaṃ ca cariṣyāmi vyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ॥04-3-7॥

[तन्तिपाल (tantipāla) - Tantipāla; (proper name); इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - renowned; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; विदितम् (viditam) - known; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; ते (te) - to you; निपुणम् (nipuṇam) - skillfully; च (ca) - and; चरिष्यामि (cariṣyāmi) - I shall undertake; व्येतु (vyetu) - may it depart; ते (te) - your; मानसः (mānasaḥ) - mental; ज्वरः (jvaraḥ) - distress;]

(Tantipāla thus renowned by name, let it be known to you. Skillfully and I shall undertake, may your mental distress depart.)

Let it be known to you that I am renowned by the name Tantipāla. I will act skillfully, and may your mental distress be relieved. (04-3-7)

अहं हि भवता गोषु सततं प्रकृतः पुरा। तत्र मे कौशलं कर्म अवबुद्धं विशां पते ॥०४-३-८॥

ahaṁ hi bhavatā goṣu satataṁ prakṛtaḥ purā। tatra me kauśalaṁ karma avabuddhaṁ viśāṁ pate ॥04-3-8॥

[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; गोषु (goṣu) - among cows; सततं (satataṁ) - always; प्रकृतः (prakṛtaḥ) - employed (was); पुरा (purā) - formerly; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - my; कौशलं (kauśalaṁ) - skill; कर्म (karma) - action; अवबुद्धं (avabuddhaṁ) - recognized; विशां पते (viśāṁ pate) - O lord of men;]

(I indeed by you among cows always employed formerly. There my skill action recognized O lord of men.)

O lord of men, I was indeed always employed by you among the cows formerly. There, my skill at work was recognized. (04-3-8)

लक्षणं चरितं चापि गवां यच्चापि मङ्गलम्। तत्सर्वं मे सुविदितमन्यच्चापि महीपते ॥०४-३-९॥

lakṣaṇaṁ caritaṁ cāpi gavāṁ yaccāpi maṅgalam। tatsarvaṁ me suviditam anyaccāpi mahīpate ॥04-3-9॥

[लक्षणम् (lakṣaṇam) - characteristic; चरितम् (caritam) - conduct; चापि (cāpi) - and also; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; यत् (yat) - which; चापि (cāpi) - and also; मङ्गलम् (maṅgalam) - auspiciousness; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; मे (me) - to me; सुविदितम् (suviditam) - well known; अन्यत् (anyat) - other (things); चापि (cāpi) - and also; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king;]

(Characteristic, conduct, and also of cows, which also auspiciousness, that all to me well known, and also other (things), O king.)

O king, the characteristics, conduct, and auspicious signs of cows—all these, and other things besides, are well known to me. (04-3-9)

वृषभानपि जानामि राजन्पूजितलक्षणान्। येषां मूत्रमुपाघ्राय अपि वन्ध्या प्रसूयते ॥०४-३-१०॥

vṛṣabhān api jānāmi rājan pūjita-lakṣaṇān। yeṣāṃ mūtram upāghrāya api vandhyā prasūyate॥04-3-10॥

[वृषभान् (vṛṣabhān) - bulls; अपि (api) - also; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पूजितलक्षणान् (pūjita-lakṣaṇān) - endowed with auspicious marks; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; मूत्रम् (mūtram) - urine; उपाघ्राय (upāghrāya) - on smelling; अपि (api) - even; वन्ध्या (vandhyā) - a barren woman; प्रसूयते (prasūyate) - becomes fruitful;]

(Bulls also I know, O king, endowed with auspicious marks; of whom urine, on smelling even, a barren woman becomes fruitful.)

O king, I also know bulls with auspicious marks, whose urine, even when merely smelled, causes a barren woman to become fruitful. (04-3-10)

सोऽहमेवं चरिष्यामि प्रीतिरत्र हि मे सदा। न च मां वेत्स्यति परस्तत्ते रोचतु पार्थिव ॥०४-३-११॥

so’ham evaṃ cariṣyāmi prītir atra hi me sadā। na ca māṃ vetsyati paras tat te rocatu pārthiva ॥04-3-11॥

[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; चरिष्यामि (cariṣyāmi) - I shall act; प्रीति: अत्र (prītiḥ atra) - affection here; हि (hi) - for; मे (me) - to me; सदा (sadā) - always; न च (na ca) - and not; माम् (mām) - me; वेत्स्यति (vetsyati) - will know; परः (paraḥ) - another; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; रोचतु (rocatu) - let it please; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]

(He I thus shall act. Affection here indeed to me always. And not me will know another. That to you let it please, O king.)

Thus shall I act. For I always find affection here; no one else will know me. Let this be to your satisfaction, O king. (04-3-11)

युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

iyaṁ tu naḥ priyā bhāryā prāṇebhyo'pi garīyasī. māteva paripālyā ca pūjyā jyeṣṭheva ca svasā ॥04-3-12॥

[इयं (iyaṁ) - this (feminine); तु (tu) - but; नः (naḥ) - our; प्रिया (priyā) - beloved; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; प्राणेभ्यः (prāṇebhyaḥ) - than lives; अपि (api) - even; गरीयसी (garīyasī) - more venerable; मातेव (māteva) - like a mother; परिपाल्या (paripālyā) - to be protected; च (ca) - and; पूज्या (pūjyā) - to be respected; ज्येष्ठेव (jyeṣṭheva) - like an elder sister; च (ca) - and; स्वसा (svasā) - sister;]

(This but our beloved wife even than lives more venerable, like a mother to be protected and to be respected, like an elder sister and (like a) sister.)

But this beloved wife of ours is more venerable even than life; she is to be protected like a mother, to be respected, and (to be regarded) like an elder sister and a sister. (04-3-12)

केन स्म कर्मणा कृष्णा द्रौपदी विचरिष्यति। न हि किञ्चिद्विजानाति कर्म कर्तुं यथा स्त्रियः ॥०४-३-१३॥

kena sma karmaṇā kṛṣṇā draupadī vikariṣyati। na hi kiñcid vijānāti karma kartuṃ yathā striyaḥ ॥04-3-13॥

[केन (kena) - by what; by whom; स्म (sma) - indeed; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā; (epithet of Draupadī); द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; विचरिष्यति (vicariṣyati) - will act; will behave; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; विजानाति (vijānāti) - knows; कर्म (karma) - action; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; यथा (yathā) - how; as; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; ॥०४-३-१३॥ (॥04-3-13॥) - ;]

(By what indeed action Kṛṣṇā Draupadī will act? Not indeed anything knows action to do as women (do).)

By what kind of action will Kṛṣṇā Draupadī act? For women truly do not know how to perform any action. (04-3-13)

सुकुमारी च बाला च राजपुत्री यशस्विनी। पतिव्रता महाभागा कथं नु विचरिष्यति ॥०४-३-१४॥

sukumārī ca bālā ca rājaputrī yaśasvinī। pativratā mahābhāgā kathaṁ nu vicariṣyati॥04-3-14॥

[सुकुमारी (sukumārī) - delicate girl; च (ca) - and; बाला (bālā) - young maiden; च (ca) - and; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - glorious; पतिव्रता (pativratā) - devoted to husband; महाभागा (mahābhāgā) - greatly fortunate; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; विचरिष्यति (vicariṣyati) - will move about;]

(Delicate girl and young maiden and princess, glorious, devoted to husband, greatly fortunate, how indeed will move about?)

How will this delicate and young girl, a glorious princess, devoted to her husband and greatly fortunate, move about indeed? (04-3-14)

माल्यगन्धानलङ्कारान्वस्त्राणि विविधानि च। एतान्येवाभिजानाति यतो जाता हि भामिनी ॥०४-३-१५॥

mālya-gandha-analaṅkārān vastrāṇi vividhāni ca। etāni eva abhijānāti yataḥ jātā hi bhāminī॥04-3-15॥

[माल्यगन्धानलङ्कारान् (mālya-gandha-analaṅkārān) - garlands; fragrances; ornaments; वस्त्राणि (vastrāṇi) - garments; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; च (ca) - and; एतानि (etāni) - these; एव (eva) - indeed; अभिजानाति (abhijānāti) - recognizes; यतः (yataḥ) - because; जाता (jātā) - born; हि (hi) - indeed; भामिनी (bhāminī) - woman;]

(Garlands, fragrances, ornaments, garments, various and; these indeed recognizes; because born indeed woman.)

A woman indeed recognizes only these—garlands, fragrances, ornaments, and various garments—because she is born that way. (04-3-15)

द्रौपद्युवाच॥

सैरन्ध्र्योऽरक्षिता लोके भुजिष्याः सन्ति भारत। नैवमन्याः स्त्रियो यान्ति इति लोकस्य निश्चयः ॥०४-३-१६॥

sairaṃdhryo’rakṣitā loke bhujiṣyāḥ santi bhārata। naivamanyāḥ striyo yānti iti lokasya niścayaḥ ॥04-3-16॥

[सैरन्ध्र्यः (sairaṃdhryaḥ) - maids-in-waiting (of Sairandhri); अरक्षिताः (arakṣitāḥ) - unprotected; लोके (loke) - in the world; भुजिष्याः (bhujiṣyāḥ) - concubines; सन्ति (santi) - exist; (they are;) भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; एवम् (evam) - thus; (in this manner;) अन्याः (anyāḥ) - other (women); स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; (females;) यान्ति (yānti) - go; (associate;) इति (iti) - thus; (so;) लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the people; (of the world;) निश्चयः (niścayaḥ) - conviction; (determination;);]

(Maids-in-waiting (of Sairandhri), unprotected, in the world are concubines, O Bhārata. Not thus do other women go, thus is the conviction of the people.)

O Bhārata, in the world, only unprotected maids-in-waiting, like Sairandhri, become concubines; other women do not act so—this is the conviction of society. (04-3-16)

साहं ब्रुवाणा सैरन्ध्री कुशला केशकर्मणि। आत्मगुप्ता चरिष्यामि यन्मां त्वमनुपृच्छसि ॥०४-३-१७॥

sāhaṃ bruvāṇā sairandhrī kuśalā keśakarmaṇi। ātmaguptā cariṣyāmi yan māṃ tvam anupṛcchasi॥04-3-17॥

सुदेष्णां प्रत्युपस्थास्ये राजभार्यां यशस्विनीम्। सा रक्षिष्यति मां प्राप्तां मा ते भूद्दुःखमीदृशम् ॥०४-३-१८॥

sudeṣṇāṁ pratyupasthāsye rājabhāryāṁ yaśasvinīm। sā rakṣiṣyati māṁ prāptāṁ mā te bhūdduḥkham īdṛśam ॥04-3-18॥

[सुदेष्णाम् (sudeṣṇām) - Sudeshna; प्रत्युपस्थास्ये (praty-upasthāsye) - I shall approach; राजभार्याम् (rājabhāryām) - the king's wife; यशस्विनीम् (yaśasvinīm) - the illustrious; सा (sā) - she; रक्षिष्यति (rakṣiṣyati) - will protect; माम् (mām) - me; प्राप्ताम् (prāptām) - arrived; मा (mā) - let not; ते (te) - to you; भूत् (bhūt) - may it be; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such as this;]

(Sudeshna I shall approach, the king's wife, the illustrious. She will protect me arrived. Let not to you may it be sorrow such as this.)

I shall approach Sudeshna, the renowned wife of the king. She will protect me when I arrive. Let there not be such sorrow for you. (04-3-18)

kalyāṇaṃ bhāṣase kṛṣṇe kule jātā yathā vadet। na pāpam abhijānāsi sādhu sādhvīvrate sthitā॥04-3-19॥

[कल्याणं (kalyāṇam) - welfare; auspiciousness; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - you speak; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - O dark-complexioned (one); कुले (kule) - in a family; जाता (jātā) - born; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; वदेत् (vadet) - one would say; न (na) - not; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; evil; अभिजानासि (abhijānāsi) - you know; you understand; साधु (sādhu) - good; virtuous; साध्वीव्रते (sādhvīvrate) - in the vow of chastity; having a virtuous vow; स्थिताः (sthitā) - abiding; standing;]

(Auspiciousness you speak, O Kṛṣṇe, born in a family, just as one would say; not sin you know, good, established in the vow of chastity.)

O Kṛṣṇe, you speak auspiciously, being born in a noble family, exactly as one should speak; you are unaware of sin, virtuous and steadfast in your vow of chastity. (04-3-19)
