युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhishthira said.
किं त्वं नकुल कुर्वाणस्तत्र तात चरिष्यसि। सुकुमारश्च शूरश्च दर्शनीयः सुखोचितः ॥०४-३-१॥
Dear Nakula, what will you do there? You are tender, brave, and handsome, and accustomed to comfort. (04-3-1)
नकुल उवाच॥
Nakul said.
अश्वबन्धो भविष्यामि विराटनृपतेरहम्। ग्रन्थिको नाम नाम्नाहं कर्मैतत्सुप्रियं मम ॥०४-३-२॥
I shall become the horse-keeper of King Virāṭa; my name will be Granthika — this duty is very dear to me. (04-3-2)
कुशलोऽस्म्यश्वशिक्षायां तथैवाश्वचिकित्सिते। प्रियाश्च सततं मेऽश्वाः कुरुराज यथा तव ॥०४-३-३॥
I am skilled in training horses and also in treating their ailments. Horses are always dear to me, O king of the Kurus, just as they are to you. (04-3-3)
ये मामामन्त्रयिष्यन्ति विराटनगरे जनाः। तेभ्य एवं प्रवक्ष्यामि विहरिष्याम्यहं यथा ॥०४-३-४॥
To those people who invite me in the city of Virāṭa, I will thus speak; I will live as I (intend). (04-3-4)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said.
सहदेव कथं तस्य समीपे विहरिष्यसि। किं वा त्वं तात कुर्वाणः प्रच्छन्नो विचरिष्यसि ॥०४-३-५॥
Sahadeva, how will you stay near him? Or, dear one, will you secretly act and wander about? (04-3-5)
सहदेव उवाच॥
Sahadeva said.
गोसङ्ख्याता भविष्यामि विराटस्य महीपतेः। प्रतिषेद्धा च दोग्धा च सङ्ख्याने कुशलो गवाम् ॥०४-३-६॥
I will serve as the cow-counter for King Virāṭa; I will be the one to guard and milk the cows, skilled in their enumeration. (04-3-6)
तन्तिपाल इति ख्यातो नाम्ना विदितमस्तु ते। निपुणं च चरिष्यामि व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥०४-३-७॥
Let it be known to you that I am renowned by the name Tantipāla. I will act skillfully, and may your mental distress be relieved. (04-3-7)
अहं हि भवता गोषु सततं प्रकृतः पुरा। तत्र मे कौशलं कर्म अवबुद्धं विशां पते ॥०४-३-८॥
O lord of men, I was indeed always employed by you among the cows formerly. There, my skill at work was recognized. (04-3-8)
लक्षणं चरितं चापि गवां यच्चापि मङ्गलम्। तत्सर्वं मे सुविदितमन्यच्चापि महीपते ॥०४-३-९॥
O king, the characteristics, conduct, and auspicious signs of cows—all these, and other things besides, are well known to me. (04-3-9)
वृषभानपि जानामि राजन्पूजितलक्षणान्। येषां मूत्रमुपाघ्राय अपि वन्ध्या प्रसूयते ॥०४-३-१०॥
O king, I also know bulls with auspicious marks, whose urine, even when merely smelled, causes a barren woman to become fruitful. (04-3-10)
सोऽहमेवं चरिष्यामि प्रीतिरत्र हि मे सदा। न च मां वेत्स्यति परस्तत्ते रोचतु पार्थिव ॥०४-३-११॥
Thus shall I act. For I always find affection here; no one else will know me. Let this be to your satisfaction, O king. (04-3-11)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said;
इयं तु नः प्रिया भार्या प्राणेभ्योऽपि गरीयसी। मातेव परिपाल्या च पूज्या ज्येष्ठेव च स्वसा ॥०४-३-१२॥
But this beloved wife of ours is more venerable even than life; she is to be protected like a mother, to be respected, and (to be regarded) like an elder sister and a sister. (04-3-12)
केन स्म कर्मणा कृष्णा द्रौपदी विचरिष्यति। न हि किञ्चिद्विजानाति कर्म कर्तुं यथा स्त्रियः ॥०४-३-१३॥
By what kind of action will Kṛṣṇā Draupadī act? For women truly do not know how to perform any action. (04-3-13)
सुकुमारी च बाला च राजपुत्री यशस्विनी। पतिव्रता महाभागा कथं नु विचरिष्यति ॥०४-३-१४॥
How will this delicate and young girl, a glorious princess, devoted to her husband and greatly fortunate, move about indeed? (04-3-14)
माल्यगन्धानलङ्कारान्वस्त्राणि विविधानि च। एतान्येवाभिजानाति यतो जाता हि भामिनी ॥०४-३-१५॥
A woman indeed recognizes only these—garlands, fragrances, ornaments, and various garments—because she is born that way. (04-3-15)
द्रौपद्युवाच॥
Draupadī said.
सैरन्ध्र्योऽरक्षिता लोके भुजिष्याः सन्ति भारत। नैवमन्याः स्त्रियो यान्ति इति लोकस्य निश्चयः ॥०४-३-१६॥
O Bhārata, in the world, only unprotected maids-in-waiting, like Sairandhri, become concubines; other women do not act so—this is the conviction of society. (04-3-16)
साहं ब्रुवाणा सैरन्ध्री कुशला केशकर्मणि। आत्मगुप्ता चरिष्यामि यन्मां त्वमनुपृच्छसि ॥०४-३-१७॥
As I speak, I am Sairandhri, skilled in hairdressing; concealing myself, I shall dwell (here) as you ask me. (04-3-17)
सुदेष्णां प्रत्युपस्थास्ये राजभार्यां यशस्विनीम्। सा रक्षिष्यति मां प्राप्तां मा ते भूद्दुःखमीदृशम् ॥०४-३-१८॥
I shall approach Sudeshna, the renowned wife of the king. She will protect me when I arrive. Let there not be such sorrow for you. (04-3-18)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhishthira said.
कल्याणं भाषसे कृष्णे कुले जाता यथा वदेत्। न पापमभिजानासि साधु साध्वीव्रते स्थिता ॥०४-३-१९॥
O Kṛṣṇe, you speak auspiciously, being born in a noble family, exactly as one should speak; you are unaware of sin, virtuous and steadfast in your vow of chastity. (04-3-19)
