ते वीरा बद्धनिस्त्रिंशास्ततायुधकलापिनः। बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्राणाः कालिन्दीमभितो ययुः ॥०४-५-१॥
te vīrā baddha-nistriṁśās tata āyudha-kalāpinaḥ | baddha-godhāṅguli-trāṇāḥ kālindīm abhito yayuḥ ॥04-5-1॥
[ते (te) - they; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; बद्ध-निस्त्रिंशाः (baddha-nistriṁśāḥ) - with fastened swords; तत (tata) - then; आयुध-कलापिनः (āyudha-kalāpinaḥ) - with weapons in quivers; बद्ध-गोधाङ्गुलित्राणाः (baddha-godhāṅguli-trāṇāḥ) - with fastened armguards (made of iguana skin); कालिन्दीम् (kālindīm) - (towards) the Yamunā (Kālindī) river; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - towards, around, on both sides; ययुः (yayuḥ) - they went;]
(They heroes with fastened swords, then with weapons in quivers, with fastened iguana-skin armguards, towards the Yamunā (Kālindī) river on both sides they went.)
Those heroes, with their swords fastened and armed with quivers and iguana-skin armguards, proceeded towards the Yamunā River from all sides. (04-5-1)
ततस्ते दक्षिणं तीरमन्वगच्छन्पदातयः। वसन्तो गिरिदुर्गेषु वनदुर्गेषु धन्विनः ॥०४-५-२॥
tataste dakṣiṇaṁ tīram anvagacchan padātayaḥ | vasanto giridurgeṣu vanadurgeṣu dhanvinaḥ ||04-5-2||

(Then they southern bank followed footmen, dwelling in mountain fortresses, in forest strongholds, archers.)
Then the foot soldiers, accompanied by archers dwelling in the mountain and forest strongholds, proceeded along the southern bank. (04-5-2)
विध्यन्तो मृगजातानि महेष्वासा महाबलाः। उत्तरेण दशार्णांस्ते पाञ्चालान्दक्षिणेन तु ॥०४-५-३॥
vidhyanto mṛgajā tāni maheṣvāsā mahābalāḥ। uttarēṇa daśārṇāṃstē pāñcālāndakṣiṇēna tu॥04-5-3॥

(Shooting animal species, the mighty-armed, very strong (men), to the north of the Daśārṇas, they (were), to the south (of) the Pāñcālas, but.)
Shooting wild animals, the mighty-armed and very strong men were to the north of the Daśārṇas and to the south of the Pāñcālas. (04-5-3)
अन्तरेण यकृल्लोमाञ्शूरसेनांश्च पाण्डवाः। लुब्धा ब्रुवाणा मत्स्यस्य विषयं प्राविशन्वनात् ॥०४-५-४॥
antareṇa yakṛllomāñśūrasenāṁś ca pāṇḍavāḥ। lubdhā bruvāṇā matsyasya viṣayaṁ prāviśan vanāt॥04-5-4॥

(Without Yakṛlloman and Śūrasena, the Pāṇḍavas, being hunters and speaking, entered the territory of Matsya from the forest.)
Except for Yakṛlloman and Śūrasena, the Pāṇḍavas, disguised as hunters and talking, entered the kingdom of Matsya from the forest. (04-5-4)
ततो जनपदं प्राप्य कृष्णा राजानमब्रवीत्। पश्यैकपद्यो दृश्यन्ते क्षेत्राणि विविधानि च ॥०४-५-५॥
tato janapadaṁ prāpya kṛṣṇā rājānamabravīt। paśyaikapadyo dṛśyante kṣetrāṇi vividhāni ca ॥04-5-5॥

(Thereafter, having reached the region, Kṛṣṇā said to the king: See, one-footed (creatures) are seen—and various fields also.)
Then, having arrived in the country, Kṛṣṇā said to the king: "Look, one-footed beings are seen and also diverse fields." (04-5-5)
व्यक्तं दूरे विराटस्य राजधानी भविष्यति। वसामेह परां रात्रिं बलवान्मे परिश्रमः ॥०४-५-६॥
vyaktaṃ dūre virāṭasya rājadhānī bhaviṣyati। vasāmeha parāṃ rātriṃ balavān me pariśramaḥ ॥04-5-6॥

(Clearly, at a distance will be Virāṭa's capital city. Let us stay here the further night; strong is my effort.)
It is clear that Virāṭa's capital city will be far away. Let us stay here the rest of the night; my effort has been considerable. (04-5-6)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

dhanañjaya samudyamya pāñcālīṃ vaha bhārata। rājdhaānyāṃ nivatsyāmo vimuktāś ca vanāditaḥ॥04-5-7॥

(O Dhananjaya, having uplifted (her), carry Panchali, O Bharata. In the capital we shall reside, released and from the forest from here.)
O Dhananjaya, O Bharata, having lifted Panchali, carry her. We shall reside in the capital, having been freed from the forest from here. (04-5-7)

(Her having taken Arjuna quickly Draupadī the lord of elephants like having reached the vicinity of the city made descend Arjuna.)
Having quickly taken Draupadī, Arjuna, like the lord of elephants, brought her down near the city. (04-5-8)
स राजधानीं सम्प्राप्य कौन्तेयोऽर्जुनमब्रवीत्। क्वायुधानि समासज्य प्रवेक्ष्यामः पुरं वयम् ॥०४-५-९॥
sa rādhānīṃ samprāpya kaunteyo'rjunam abravīt। kvāyudhāni samāsajya pravekṣyāmaḥ puraṃ vayam॥04-5-9॥

(He, having reached the capital city, the son of Kuntī spoke to Arjuna: "Where, having placed the weapons, shall we enter the city?")
He, having arrived at the capital, the son of Kuntī spoke to Arjuna: "Where, after depositing our weapons, shall we enter the city?" (04-5-9)
सायुधाश्च वयं तात प्रवेक्ष्यामः पुरं यदि। समुद्वेगं जनस्यास्य करिष्यामो न संशयः ॥०४-५-१०॥
sāyudhāś ca vayaṃ tāta pravekṣyāmaḥ puraṃ yadi. samudvegaṃ janasyāsya kariṣyāmo na saṃśayaḥ ॥04-5-10॥
[सायुधाः (sāyudhāḥ) - armed; with weapons; च (ca) - and; वयम् (vayam) - we; तात (tāta) - O dear one; प्रवेक्ष्यामः (pravekṣyāmaḥ) - shall enter; पुरम् (puram) - city; यदि (yadi) - if; समुद्वेगम् (samudvegam) - agitation; excitement; जनस्य (janasya) - of the people; अस्य (asya) - of this; करिष्यामः (kariṣyāmaḥ) - shall cause; न (na) - no; not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Armed and we, O dear one, shall enter the city, if. Agitation of the people of this we shall cause, not doubt.)
O dear one, if we, armed, enter this city, there is no doubt we will cause agitation among these people. (04-5-10)
ततो द्वादश वर्षाणि प्रवेष्टव्यं वनं पुनः। एकस्मिन्नपि विज्ञाते प्रतिज्ञातं हि नस्तथा ॥०४-५-११॥
tato dvādaśa varṣāṇi praveṣṭavyaṃ vanaṃ punaḥ। ekasminnapi vijñāte pratijñātaṃ hi nastathā ॥04-5-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; प्रवेष्टव्यं (praveṣṭavyam) - to be entered; वनं (vanaṃ) - forest; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एकस्मिन् अपि (ekasmin api) - even by one; विज्ञाते (vijñāte) - if recognized; प्रतिज्ञातं (pratijñātam) - promised; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - by us; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(From then, twelve years the forest is to be entered again; even if by one recognized, thus indeed has been promised by us.)
Therefore, we must again enter the forest for twelve years; for even if one of us is recognized, such was indeed our promise. (04-5-11)

iyaṃ kūṭe manuṣyendra gahanā mahatī śamī। bhīmaśākhā durārohā śmaśānasya samīpataḥ ॥04-5-12॥

O king of men, this great, dense śamī tree stands upon the crag, with terrible branches, difficult to climb, near the cremation ground. (04-5-12)
न चापि विद्यते कश्चिन्मनुष्य इह पार्थिव। उत्पथे हि वने जाता मृगव्यालनिषेविते ॥०४-५-१३॥
na cāpi vidyate kaścin manuṣya iha pārthiva। utpathe hi vane jātā mṛgavyāla-niṣevite ॥04-5-13॥

(And not even any man exists here, O king. On the wrong path indeed in the forest, born and frequented by beasts and wild animals.)
O king, there is also not even a single human here. This is an off-path in the forest, inhabited by beasts and wild animals. (04-5-13)
समासज्यायुधान्यस्यां गच्छामो नगरं प्रति। एवमत्र यथाजोषं विहरिष्याम भारत ॥०४-५-१४॥
samāsajyāyudhānyasyāṁ gacchāmo nagaraṁ prati। evamatra yathājoṣaṁ vihariṣyāma bhārata॥04-5-14॥
[समासज्य (samāsajya) - having set down; placed; arranged; आयुधानि (āyudhāni) - weapons; अस्याम् (asyām) - in this (area); गच्छामः (gacchāmaḥ) - we go; नगरम् (nagaram) - city; प्रतिः (prati) - towards; एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; अत्र (atra) - here; यथाजोषम् (yathājoṣam) - as one pleases; according to liking; विहरिष्याम (vihariṣyāma) - we shall roam; we shall enjoy; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; O descendant of Bharata;]
(Having set down the weapons in this (area), we go towards the city. Thus here as one pleases, we shall roam, O Bhārata. (04-5-14))
Having deposited our weapons here, let us go toward the city. Thus, here, as we please, we will wander about, O Bhārata. (04-5-14)

येन देवान्मनुष्यांश्च सर्पांश्चैकरथोऽजयत्। स्फीताञ्जनपदांश्चान्यानजयत्कुरुनन्दनः ॥०४-५-१६॥
yena devān manuṣyāṁś ca sarpāṁś caikaratho'jayat. sphītāñ janapadāṁś cānyān ajayat kurunandanaḥ ॥04-5-16॥

(Having heard whose opening, the others in battle fled, like the cracking of a split mountain as if by a thunderbolt.)

सैन्धवं येन राजानं परामृषत चानघ। ज्यापाशं धनुषस्तस्य भीमसेनोऽवतारयत् ॥०४-५-२१॥
saindhavaṃ yena rājānaṃ parāmṛṣata cānagha। jyāpāśaṃ dhanuṣas tasya bhīmaseno'vatārayat॥04-5-21॥

(Sindhu king by whom the king touched and O sinless one, the bowstring of the bow his Bhīmasena let loose.)
O sinless one, Bhimasena let loose the bowstring of his bow against the Sindhu king who had touched the king. (04-5-21)
अजयत्पश्चिमामाशां धनुषा येन पाण्डवः। तस्य मौर्वीमपाकर्षच्छूरः सङ्क्रन्दनो युधि ॥०४-५-२२॥
ajayat paścimām āśāṃ dhanuṣā yena pāṇḍavaḥ। tasya maurvīm apākarṣat śūraḥ saṅkrandano yudhi॥04-5-22॥

(Conquered the western direction with the bow by whom the Pāṇḍava. His bowstring drew back the hero Saṅkrandana in battle.)

दक्षिणां दक्षिणाचारो दिशं येनाजयत्प्रभुः। अपज्यमकरोद्वीरः सहदेवस्तदायुधम् ॥०४-५-२३॥

(The southern, the one who moved south, direction, by whom, conquered, lord. Without string, made, hero, Sahadeva, that weapon.)

खड्गांश्च पीतान्दीर्घांश्च कलापांश्च महाधनान्। विपाठान्क्षुरधारांश्च धनुर्भिर्निदधुः सह ॥०४-५-२४॥
khaḍgāṁś ca pītān dīrghāṁś ca kalāpāṁś ca mahādhanān। vipāṭhān kṣuradhārāṁś ca dhanurbhir nidadhuḥ saha ॥04-5-24॥

(swords and yellow long and quivers and powerful bows, well-stretched, razor-sharp and with bows placed together.)

तामुपारुह्य नकुलो धनूंषि निदधत्स्वयम्। यानि तस्यावकाशानि दृढरूपाण्यमन्यत ॥०४-५-२५॥
tām upāruhya nakulo dhanuṃṣi nidadhat svayam। yāni tasyāvakāśāni dṛḍharūpāṇi amanyata ॥04-5-25॥

After mounting the chariot, Nakula himself placed the bows and considered which places in it were sturdy. (04-5-25)
यत्र चापश्यत स वै तिरो वर्षाणि वर्षति। तत्र तानि दृढैः पाशैः सुगाढं पर्यबन्धत ॥०४-५-२६॥
yatra cāpaśyat sa vai tiro varṣāṇi varṣati। tatra tāni dṛḍhaiḥ pāśaiḥ sugāḍhaṃ paryabandhata॥04-5-26॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; च (ca) - and; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; तिरः (tiro) - beyond; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; वर्षति (varṣati) - rains; तत्र (tatra) - there; तानि (tāni) - them; दृढैः (dṛḍhaiḥ) - with strong; पाशैः (pāśaiḥ) - bonds; सुगाढम् (sugāḍham) - firmly; पर्यबन्धत् (paryabandhat) - he bound around;]

शरीरं च मृतस्यैकं समबध्नन्त पाण्डवाः। विवर्जयिष्यन्ति नरा दूरादेव शमीमिमाम् ॥ आबद्धं शवमत्रेति गन्धमाघ्राय पूतिकम् ॥०४-५-२७॥
śarīraṃ ca mṛtasyaikaṃ samabadhnanta pāṇḍavāḥ। vivarjayiṣyanti narā dūrādeva śamīmimām॥ ābaddhaṃ śavamatreti gandhamāghrāya pūtikam॥04-5-27॥

(Body and of the dead one the Pāṇḍavas bind; will avoid men from afar indeed this śamī tree. Tied corpse here thus, smelling the putrid odor.)
The Pāṇḍavas will tie up the body of the dead man, and men will avoid this śamī tree from afar. Here the corpse is tied; thus, on smelling the putrid odor. (04-5-27)
अशीतिशतवर्षेयं माता न इति वादिनः। कुलधर्मोऽयमस्माकं पूर्वैराचरितोऽपि च ॥ समासजाना वृक्षेऽस्मिन्निति वै व्याहरन्ति ते ॥०४-५-२८॥
aśītiśatav arṣeyaṁ mātā na iti vādināḥ. kuladharmo'ya masmākaṁ pūrvair ācarito'pi ca ॥ samāsajānā vṛkṣe'sminn iti vai vyāharanti te ॥04-5-28॥

(Eighty-hundred years old, this mother is not, thus sayers; the family custom this of ours practiced by ancestors also and. Those bringing together on the tree, in this, thus indeed they declare.)
Those who say 'this mother, though eighty-hundred years old, is not (to be kept),' this is our family custom, also practiced by our ancestors. Those bringing (her) to this tree, thus indeed they declare. (04-5-28)
आ गोपालाविपालेभ्य आचक्षाणाः परन्तपाः। आजग्मुर्नगराभ्याशं पार्थाः शत्रुनिबर्हणाः ॥०४-५-२९॥
ā gopālāvipālebhya ācakṣāṇāḥ parantapāḥ. ājagmur nagarābhyāśaṃ pārthāḥ śatrunibarhaṇāḥ ॥04-5-29॥
[आ (ā) - towards; गोपालाविपालेभ्य (gopālāvipālebhyaḥ) - from the cowherds and herdsmen; आचक्षाणाः (ācakṣāṇāḥ) - inquiring; परन्तपाः (parantapāḥ) - scorchers of enemies; आजग्मुः (ājagmuḥ) - they came; नगराभ्याशं (nagarābhyāśam) - to the vicinity of the city; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and his brothers); शत्रुनिबर्हणाः (śatrunibarhaṇāḥ) - destroyers of enemies;]
(Towards the cowherds and herdsmen, inquiring, the scorchers of enemies; they came to the vicinity of the city, the sons of Pṛthā, destroyers of enemies.)

जयो जयन्तो विजयो जयत्सेनो जयद्बलः। इति गुह्यानि नामानि चक्रे तेषां युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-५-३०॥
jayo jayanto vijayo jayatsenō jayadbalaḥ। iti guh-yāni nāmāni cakre teṣāṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥04-5-30॥
[जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; जयन्तः (jayantaḥ) - conquering; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - complete victory; जयत्सेनः (jayatsenaḥ) - having victorious army; जयद्बलः (jayadbalaḥ) - having victory as strength; इति (iti) - thus; गुह्यानि (guh-yāni) - secret; नामानि (nāmāni) - names; चक्रे (cakre) - made (assigned); तेषाम् (teṣām) - for them; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Victory, conquering, complete victory, having victorious army, having victory as strength; thus secret names Yudhiṣṭhira made for them.)
Yudhiṣṭhira assigned the secret names "Victory, Conquering, Complete Victory, Victorious Army, Victorious Strength" to them. (04-5-30)
ततो यथाप्रतिज्ञाभिः प्राविशन्नगरं महत्। अज्ञातचर्यां वत्स्यन्तो राष्ट्रे वर्षं त्रयोदशम् ॥०४-५-३१॥
tato yathāpratijñābhiḥ prāviśannagaraṁ mahat। ajñātacaryāṁ vatsyanto rāṣṭre varṣaṁ trayodaśam ॥04-5-31॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; यथा-प्रतिज्ञाभिः (yathā-pratijñābhiḥ) - according to their vows; प्राविशन् (prāviśan) - entered; नगरं (nagaraṁ) - city; महत् (mahat) - great; अज्ञात-चर्याम् (ajñāta-caryām) - life in incognito; वत्स्यन्तः (vatsyantaḥ) - dwelling; राष्ट्रे (rāṣṭre) - in the kingdom; वर्षम् (varṣam) - year; त्रयोदशम् (trayodaśam) - thirteenth;]
(Then according to their vows they entered the great city, to dwell in incognito in the kingdom for the thirteenth year.)
