अथापरो भीमबलः श्रिया ज्वल; न्नुपाययौ सिंहविलासविक्रमः। खजं च दर्वीं च करेण धारय; न्नसिं च कालाङ्गमकोशमव्रणम् ॥०४-७-१॥
athāparo bhīma-balaḥ śriyā jvala; n-nupāyayau siṃha-vilāsa-vikramaḥ. khajaṃ ca dervīṃ ca kareṇa dhāra-ya; n-na-siṃ ca kālāṅgama-kośam-avraṇam ॥04-7-1॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; अपरो (aparaḥ) - another; other; भीमबलः (bhīma-balaḥ) - of terrible strength; श्रिया (śriyā) - with splendor; ज्वलन् (jvalan) - shining; blazing; उपाययौ (upāyayau) - approached; came near; सिंहविलासविक्रमः (siṃha-vilāsa-vikramaḥ) - with the gait and prowess of a lion; खजं (khajam) - ladle (for taking clarified butter); च (ca) - and; दर्वीं (darvīṃ) - spoon; ladle; च (ca) - and; करेण (kareṇa) - with the hand; धारयन् (dhārayan) - holding; नसिं (nasiṃ) - nasi (name; or nose); च (ca) - and; कालाङ्गमकोशम् (kālāṅgama-kośam) - sheath for the black limb (probably a weapon or special attribute); अव्रणम् (avraṇam) - without wound; uninjured;]
(Now another, of terrible strength, shining with splendor, approached, with the gait and prowess of a lion. Holding ladle and spoon in the hand, and also the sheath for the black limb, uninjured.)
Then another, possessed of mighty strength and resplendent, came forward with the proud stride and vigor of a lion. He held a ladle and a spoon in his hand, and also carried the sheath for the black limb, unblemished. (04-7-1)
स सूदरूपः परमेण वर्चसा; रविर्यथा लोकमिमं प्रभासयन्। सुकृष्णवासा गिरिराजसारवा; न्स मत्स्यराजं समुपेत्य तस्थिवान् ॥०४-७-२॥
sa sūdarūpaḥ parameṇa varcasā; ravir yathā lokam imaṃ prabhāsayan। sukṛṣṇavāsā girirājasāravā; nsa matsyarājaṃ samupetya tasthivān ॥04-7-2॥
[स (sa) - he; सूदरूपः (sūdarūpaḥ) - of attractive form; परमेण (parameṇa) - with supreme; वर्चसा (varcasā) - splendor; रविः (raviḥ) - the sun; यथा (yathā) - as; लोकम् (lokam) - world; इमम् (imam) - this; प्रभासयन् (prabhāsayan) - shining; सुकृष्णवासा (sukṛṣṇavāsā) - with dark-colored attire; गिरिराजसारवान्स् (girirājasāravāns) - possessing the essence of the king of mountains; मत्स्यराजम् (matsyarājam) - to the king of the fish; समुपेत्य (samupetya) - having approached; तस्थिवान् (tasthivān) - stood (there);]
(He of attractive form, with supreme splendor, like the sun shining on this world, wearing dark-colored attire, possessing the essence of the king of mountains, having approached the king of the fish, stood (there).)
He, resplendent in supreme glory and beautiful form, just like the sun illuminating this world, dressed in dark garments and bearing the substance of the king of mountains, approached and stood before the king of the fish. (04-7-2)
तं प्रेक्ष्य राजा वरयन्नुपागतं; ततोऽब्रवीज्जानपदान्समागतान्। सिंहोन्नतांसोऽयमतीव रूपवान्; प्रदृश्यते को नु नरर्षभो युवा ॥०४-७-३॥
taṁ prekṣya rājā varayann upāgataṁ; tato'bravīj jānapadān samāgatān. siṁho-nnatāṁso'yam atīva rūpavān; pradṛśyate ko nu nararṣabho yuvā ॥04-7-3॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; राजा (rājā) - the king; वरयन् (varayan) - choosing; selecting; उपागतं (upāgatam) - approached; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; जानपदान् (jānapadān) - the people of the country; समागतान् (samāgatān) - assembled; gathered; सिंह-उन्नत-अंसः (siṁha-unnata-aṁsaḥ) - with shoulders raised like a lion’s; अयम् (ayam) - this; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; very; रूपवान् (rūpavān) - handsome; प्रदृश्यते (pradṛśyate) - is seen; appears; कः (kaḥ) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; then; नरर्षभः (nararṣabhaḥ) - bull among men; युवा (yuvā) - young man;]
(Him having seen, the king, choosing (him) who had approached; then said to the people of the country who were assembled. With lion-raised shoulders, this one is exceedingly handsome; who indeed is this bull among men, this young man, who is seen? (04-7-3))
Having seen him, the king, selecting the one who had approached, then spoke to the assembled people of the land: 'This man, with shoulders raised like a lion, is exceedingly handsome; who indeed is this young and outstanding man, this bull among men, who is seen?' (04-7-3)
अदृष्टपूर्वः पुरुषो रविर्यथा; वितर्कयन्नास्य लभामि सम्पदम्। तथास्य चित्तं ह्यपि संवितर्कय; न्नरर्षभस्याद्य न यामि तत्त्वतः ॥०४-७-४॥
adṛṣṭapūrvaḥ puruṣo raviryathā; vitarkayannāsya labhāmi sampadam. tathāsya cittaṃ hyapi saṃvitarkaya; nnararṣabhasyādya na yāmi tattvataḥ ॥04-7-4॥
[अदृष्टपूर्वः (adṛṣṭapūrvaḥ) - never before seen; previously unseen; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; person; रविः (raviḥ) - sun; यथा (yathā) - just as; as; वितर्कयन् (vitarkayan) - considering; reasoning; आस्य (āsya) - his; of him; लभामि (labhāmi) - I obtain; I arrive at; सम्पदम् (sampadam) - (true) nature; state; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; अस्य (asya) - his; of him; चित्तम् (cittam) - mind; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; अपि (api) - even; also; संवितर्कयन् (saṃvitarkayan) - deliberating; trying to understand; न (na) - not; नरर्षभस्य (nararṣabhasya) - of the bull among men (eminent man); आद्य (ādya) - today; न (na) - not; यामि (yāmi) - I go; I reach; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - in reality; truly;]
(Never before seen person, just as the sun; considering, I obtain his nature. In the same way, his mind indeed even deliberating; not of the eminent man today I reach in reality.)
Just as one cannot grasp the true nature of the never-before-seen sun by reasoning, so too, though I consider his mind intently, today I cannot truly understand the reality of this eminent man. (04-7-4)
ततो विराटं समुपेत्य पाण्डवः; सुदीनरूपो वचनं महामनाः। उवाच सूदोऽस्मि नरेन्द्र बल्लवो; भजस्व मां व्यञ्जनकारमुत्तमम् ॥०४-७-५॥
tato virāṭaṃ samupetya pāṇḍavaḥ; sudīnarūpo vacanaṃ mahāmanāḥ। uvāca sūdo'smi narendra ballavo; bhajasva māṃ vyañjanakāramuttamam ॥04-7-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विराटम् (virāṭam) - Virāṭa (the king); समुपेत्य (samupetya) - having approached; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; सुदीनरूपः (sudīnarūpaḥ) - of very miserable appearance; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; उवाच (uvāca) - said; सूः अस्मि (sūdaḥ asmi) - I am a cook; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; बल्लवः (ballavaḥ) - Bhallava (Bṛhannalā's pseudonym); भजस्व (bhajasva) - accept; माम् (mām) - me; व्यञ्जनकारम् उत्तमम् (vyañjanakāram uttamam) - the best maker of dishes;]
(Then having approached Virāṭa, the Pāṇḍava, of very miserable appearance, the great-minded one said these words: "O king, I am a cook, Ballava by name. Accept me as the best maker of dishes." (04-7-5))
Then, having drawn near to Virāṭa, the Pāṇḍava, appearing very miserable, the great-minded one said: "O king, I am Ballava the cook. Accept me as an excellent maker of dishes." (04-7-5)

न सूदतां मानद श्रद्दधामि ते; सहस्रनेत्रप्रतिमो हि दृश्यसे। श्रिया च रूपेण च विक्रमेण च; प्रभासि तातानवरो नरेष्विह ॥०४-७-६॥
na sūdatāṁ mānada śraddadhāmi te; sahasranetrapratimo hi dṛśyase. śriyā ca rūpeṇa ca vikrameṇa ca; prabhāsi tātānavaro nareṣviha ॥04-7-6॥
[न (na) - not; सूदतां (sūdatām) - servant-hood; मानद (mānada) - respect-giver; श्रद्दधामि (śraddadhāmi) - I trust; ते (te) - in your; सहस्रनेत्रप्रतिमः (sahasranetrapratimaḥ) - equal to thousand-eyed (Indra); हि (hi) - indeed; दृश्यसे (dṛśyase) - you are seen; श्रिया (śriyā) - by splendor; च (ca) - and; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by form; च (ca) - and; विक्रमेण (vikrameṇa) - by valor; च (ca) - and; प्रभासि (prabhāsi) - you shine; तात (tāta) - O dear one; अनवरः (anavaraḥ) - not inferior; नरेषु (nareṣu) - among men; इह (iha) - here;]
(I do not trust servitude in you, O respect-giver; you are indeed seen as equal to the thousand-eyed (Indra). By splendor, by form, and by valor, you shine, O dear one, not inferior among men here.)
O respect-giver, I do not believe you possess the nature of a servant; you appear, indeed, like Indra himself. In splendor, form, and valor, O dear one, you shine here among men with none your equal. (04-7-6)

नरेन्द्र सूदः परिचारकोऽस्मि ते; जानामि सूपान्प्रथमेन केवलान्। आस्वादिता ये नृपते पुराभव; न्युधिष्ठिरेणापि नृपेण सर्वशः ॥०४-७-७॥
narendra sūdaḥ paricārako'smi te; jānāmi sūpānprathamena kevalān. āsvāditā ye nṛpate purābhava; nyudhiṣṭhireṇāpi nṛpeṇa sarvaśaḥ ॥04-7-7॥
[नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; सूदः (sūdaḥ) - cook; परिचारकः (paricārakaḥ) - attendant; अस्मि (asmi) - am; ते (te) - your; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; सूपान् (sūpān) - soups; प्रथमेन (prathamena) - first; केवलान् (kevalān) - only; आस्वादिता (āsvāditā) - tasted; ये (ye) - which; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; पुरा (purā) - formerly; अभवन् (abhavan) - were; युधिष्ठिरेणापि (yudhiṣṭhireṇāpi) - even by Yudhishthira; नृपेण (nṛpeṇa) - by the king; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
(O king, I am your cook and attendant; I know the soups which first alone were tasted, which formerly were tasted, O king, even by Yudhishthira the king, entirely.)
O king, I am your cook and attendant; I know the soups that, in former times, were first tasted solely, and which were entirely enjoyed even by King Yudhishthira. (04-7-7)
बलेन तुल्यश्च न विद्यते मया; नियुद्धशीलश्च सदैव पार्थिव। गजैश्च सिंहैश्च समेयिवानहं; सदा करिष्यामि तवानघ प्रियम् ॥०४-७-८॥
balena tulyas ca na vidyate mayā; niyuddha-śīlas ca sadaiva pārthiva. gajaiś ca siṁhaiś ca sameyivān ahaṁ; sadā kariṣyāmi tavānagha priyam ॥04-7-8॥
[बलेन (balena) - by strength; by might; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; comparable; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - is; exists; मया (mayā) - by me; नियुद्धशीलः (niyuddha-śīlaḥ) - one devoted to combat; having a nature for battle; च (ca) - and; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; गजैः (gajaiḥ) - with elephants; च (ca) - and; सिंहैः (siṁhaiḥ) - with lions; च (ca) - and; समेयिवान् (sameyivān) - I have fought; I have contended; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; सदा (sadā) - always; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; तव (tava) - for you; of you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless (one); प्रियम् (priyam) - the dear; that which is pleasing;]
(By strength, equal and not exists by me; devoted to combat and always, O king. With elephants and with lions and have fought I; always I shall do for you, O sinless, the dear.)
There is none equal to me in strength; I am always devoted to combat, O king. I have contended with elephants and lions; I shall always do what is dear to you, O sinless one. (04-7-8)

ददामि ते हन्त वरं महानसे; तथा च कुर्याः कुशलं हि भाषसे। न चैव मन्ये तव कर्म तत्समं; समुद्रनेमिं पृथिवीं त्वमर्हसि ॥०४-७-९॥
dadāmi te hanta varaṁ mahānase; tathā ca kuryāḥ kuśalaṁ hi bhāṣase. na caiva manye tava karma tatsamaṁ; samudranemiṁ pṛthivīṁ tvamarhasi ॥04-7-9॥
[ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; ते (te) - to you; हन्त (hanta) - indeed; वरं (varaṁ) - a boon; महानसे (mahānase) - O cook; तथा (tathā) - so; च (ca) - and; कुर्याः (kuryāḥ) - may you do; कुशलं (kuśalaṁ) - well; हि (hi) - indeed; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - you speak; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मन्ये (manye) - I think; तव (tava) - your; कर्म (karma) - action; तत्समं (tatsamaṁ) - equal to that; समुद्रनेमिं (samudranemiṁ) - having the ocean as rim (i.e., encircled by ocean); पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṁ) - earth; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्हसि (arhasi) - deserve;]
(I give to you indeed a boon, O cook; so also may you do well, indeed you speak. And not indeed I think your action equal to that; the earth encircled by the ocean you deserve.)
I truly grant you a boon, O cook; therefore, act well, for you speak well. I do not consider anything equal to your deed; you deserve the earth rimmed by the ocean. (04-7-9)
यथा हि कामस्तव तत्तथा कृतं; महानसे त्वं भव मे पुरस्कृतः। नराश्च ये तत्र ममोचिताः पुरा; भवस्व तेषामधिपो मया कृतः ॥०४-७-१०॥
yathā hi kāmas-tava tattathā kṛtaṃ; mahānase tvaṃ bhava me puraskṛtaḥ. narāś-ca ye tatra mam-ocitāḥ purā; bhavasva teṣām-adhipo mayā kṛtaḥ ॥04-7-10॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; हि (hi) - indeed; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; तव (tava) - your; तत्तथा (tattathā) - so accordingly; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; महानसे (mahānase) - in the kitchen; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; भव (bhava) - be; मे (me) - for me; पुरस्कृतः (puraskṛtaḥ) - placed at the front; नराः (narāḥ) - men; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; तत्र (tatra) - there; मम (mama) - my; उचिताः (ucitāḥ) - fit; पुरा (purā) - before; भवस्व (bhavasva) - become; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; अधिपः (adhipaḥ) - lord; मया (mayā) - by me; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - appointed;]
(As indeed your desire, so accordingly done; in the kitchen you be for me placed at the front. And the men who there were fit for me before; become their lord appointed by me. (04-7-10))
As your wish has been carried out, you shall be foremost in the kitchen for me. And those men who were previously suitable for me there—you shall become their leader as appointed by me. (04-7-10)

तथा स भीमो विहितो महानसे; विराटराज्ञो दयितोऽभवद्दृढम्। उवास राजन्न च तं पृथग्जनो; बुबोध तत्रानुचरश्च कश्चन ॥०४-७-११॥
tathā sa bhīmo vihito mahānase; virāṭarājño dayito'bhavaddṛḍham। uvāsa rājanna ca taṃ pṛthagjano; bubodha tatrānucaraś ca kaścana ॥04-7-11॥
[तथा (tathā) - in this manner; स (sa) - he; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - appointed; महानसे (mahānase) - in the kitchen; विराटराज्ञः (virāṭarājñaḥ) - of King Virāṭa; दयितः (dayitaḥ) - dear; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firmly; उवास (uvāsa) - dwelt; राजन् (rājan) - O King; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; पृथक्जनः (pṛthagjanaḥ) - other person; बुबोध (bubodha) - knew; तत्र (tatra) - there; अनुचरः (anucaraḥ) - attendant; च (ca) - and; कश्चन (kaścana) - any one;]
(In this manner, he, Bhīma, was appointed in the kitchen; he of King Virāṭa became dear firmly. He dwelt, O King; and no other person there knew him, nor did any attendant.)
Thus, Bhīma was appointed in the kitchen and became firmly dear to King Virāṭa. He stayed there, O King, and no other person or attendant recognized him. (04-7-11)
